I don't know what the heck everyone else is talking about! This is where I got the best chili dog ever! The other food was yummy too

This nations' is pretty sad looking inside, with its dank lighting that makes it always feel like 2 am. having said that it's probably better at 2am, because thats when pie and burgers tastes the best.

Great place to "slum it up," as my sweetheart calls it. We usually eat quite well, besides the occasional gourmet pizza, so we decided to be ghetto and check this out for dinner. Breakfast served 24 hours a day! The service was pretty slow and not very friendly (not blaming them...I'd be dour if I worked there), though the food came quickly once we ordered. It's pretty much self-serve. Choose from burgers (didn't look that giant), including wild salmon; salads; breakfast combinations; and cheesecakes/pies. My junior egg breakfast was less than $4 and included toast, an egg, hash browns, and 2 slices of bacon. The food: -Pancakes: tried my bf's. Not enticing at all, but quite abundant. They messed up on his order. -Toast: Just regular bread, slightly burnt and spread with butter. -Egg: I ordered scrambled and this was not. It was okay though. -Bacon: Nothing special. -Hash browns: My favorite part of the meal. Pie: -I got a slice cherry cheesecake for $3. It wasn't that great and I haven't even finished it yet. Way too much artificial-tasting syrup. Sara Lee's is better, thankyouverymuch. Verdict: I prefer McDonald's. If only they had McMuffins and hash browns 24 hours a day. Back to eating well for us!

Why go all the way to Berkeley, when there are two, count them TWO Nations within a three-mile radius? This Nation's is a little different. For one thing, it is pretty new, just a couple of years old, and they spent alot of architectural energy getting it right. Inside it has a post-modern craftsman type feel with exposed wood beam ceilings, green and brown paint and aluminum modernistic accents. You can't eat architectural detail, however you CAN eat a salad here, which is a refreshing change, because other Nation's don't have salad selection. Today I chose the wild salmon ceasar salad which was great (except the dressing came on the side and there was not enough). The lettuce was not the pale type shredded mess you might expect to find, but a chopped hearts of romaine. I don't care for croutons, so I picked them out, but there was plenty of parmesean cheese to make me happy. Dr. R. had what he always has at Nation's the Wild Salmon burger with no onions. If you go to Nation's you have to specify no onions, because somewhere they own an onion farm and were told that people love a big healthy slice of onion. One of my compatriots told me that you can asked for fried onions, but I mostly chose to forgo them entirely. We shared a small slice of pumpkin pie and a cup of coffee. This was a lovely lunch, then we walked across the street to check out the Talverna tile shop that has recently expanded.

Very simple menu. Feels like a mom and pop breakfast and burger joint even though it's a chain. Nothing really special or excellent.

I really really really like the pies from here! and i'm not even a pie person! There are TONS of pies to choose from! It was my first time here, and the guy helping me was really nice, he went through the names of ALL the pies for me. they all looked GOOD! I hate when i try some place for the first time, because i literally wanna eat/try everything. I've gone overboard a few times to remind myself not to order more than 2-3 meals worth. Anyway, I ordered a slice of the coconut pie and the banana pie. Mind you, the slice is HUGE! 2 ppl will be satisfied with one slice, i think. But I wanted to TRY, so 1 is def not enough. Got home and tried the pies. DEEEE-LISH! i especially LOVE the banana pie! Once, I'm done with a bite, the pie calls my name to keep eating! If i lived in berkeley, I'd be one fat lady cuz i'll drop by each day to try a new pie! the coconut I thought was really sweet. I eat REALLY sugary sweets, so it is super duper sweet if I can't even take it. I gave 4 stars because I don't really like the setting. It's trying to be a diner-ish (metal everything), but I think it would be nice to warm the place up a bit and make it more inviting. I wouldn't have stopped by nor gone into this place had it not been for the bf taking me. mmm...pies...Nation's turned me into a pie fan.

Full disclosure: I have never eaten the burgers here. I have only had the pie and a not-very-memorable order of french fries. Review is based on pie, and pie alone. I've been to nations on a few occasions for pie, usually after tipsy late-night shenanigans when I am too lazy to make pie myself. I'm very discerning when it comes to pie as very little can match up to my homemade crust, but sometimes you just want a store-bought pie. Nation's is open later and better tasting than pies at Safeway, so they already fill my criteria. The berry pie and sugar-free apple are really pretty good. The shortening based pie crust is cooked just right (though a bit thinner than I would like--obviously reminiscent of mass-produced frozen pie crusts). Even though the pie isn't spectacular, it is about $3 for a huge slice (i.e. a quarter of a pie). And when you can get a whole pie for $10, that's really great too (especially at 1 in the morning). Yesterday I picked up a whole pie with a few people and one of the seasonal specialties was "pumpkin cream pie". We ordered that and as usual, $10 is a great price. This was my first time ever ordering a cream pie and although the pumpkin filling was the perfect texture and well spiced, the cream on top was terrible. It wasn't even ready-whip but the obvious, slightly chemical taste of cool whip or something similar. Ick... I'll stick to their classic pies next time, not the cream pies. Part of me wants to order breakfast sometime, but it's served at all hours of the day and never looks very appetizing. The service is friendly, but I dislike the "ordering at the counter" aspect when you're supposed to sit down for a meal (even if it's only at a diner). I think I'll stick to late-night and take our pies in the future.

i've had many late night cheeseburgers courtesy of nation's. the best cheeseburger you'll have? no way. a good place to fulfill your craving and not break bank? definitely. their fries are usually terrible so i don't get them very often. when you ask for onion on your burger, they put one HUGE piece. i'm talking 8 or 9 rings. no one needs that much onion. i always wipe the miracle whip off of the bottom of my burger. they put way too much. but alas, i love burgers and breakfast food so nation's wins this round.

The burgers are nothing special and I'd give them a 2 or 3 star rating if it werent for three factors. 1) the paucity of late-night places in Berkeley makes the fact that they are open until 1am (or was it 2?) that much more significant. 2) good pies 3) fantastic BLTs.

A friend of man said that Nation's hamburgers were just as good as the ones from In-N-Out. I thought "Really?" I had to go find out and went to this remodeled Nation's in Berkeley. The company updated the look with a nice retro-ish vibe. The food itself is decent. The burger is nowhere near the neighborhood of In-N-Out. I wouldn't even place it in the same ZIP code. The burger's crammed with too much onions, lettuce and tomatoes. Biting into it is messy as hell and all you can taste is the mayo. I'm not against sloppy burgers I just don't want feel like I showered in one. The fries are decent, but nothing spectacular. It's hospital-food good. Nothing more, nothing less. It may need a little more salt at times.

How did I find myself here eating pie at midnight? Oh yea, I remember: 11:59pm Sameer: Hey, wanna get pie? Me: Yea sure haha I never pass up a chance for food! We bought a full pumpkin pie. Pretty standard but where else would you go to satisfy your pie cravings late at night? =) ~$10 split amongst 4 ppl = great midnight deal. Well worth the trip. I also came here another time to try out their burgers. Standard classic burgers for a very cheap $4! Their large size can definitely over satisfy your craving for a simple solid burger. They're not called Giants for no reason. I prefer to eat here rather than at any of those gross fast food joints (McDonald, Burger King, Carl's Jr. etc. EXCEPT In n Out!!)

You come here for the pie. You stay for the pie. The STRAWBERRY Pie. This is the stuff that dreams are made of. Fruity dreams. Basically it's just a sugary, flaky, probably lardy, averagely delicious pie crust. Then that's filled up with a heaping, towering mound of strawberries and covered in red, sugary glop. Like there are probably a pint of strawberries in the small tart and like, damn, like probably two quarts of strawberries in the regular big pie. These things are gorgeous. They count as ALL of your five fruits and veggies for the day. Absolute bliss. I was thrilled to see that this location had sprung up since I lived here and I found it very clean and sparkly new looking for a Nation's, especially since my usual Nation's had been the Jack London Square spot. Burgers, fries, everything else is good, sometimes real good. But you really don't want to fuck around and not be able to eat more pie. You want more pie! I sure as hell do! Who am I kidding, there is always more room for Nation's strawberry pie - this might be the best pie in this country. Hell, eat a whole damn pie yourself. I have. And I'm not ashamed. I am totally hating on you right now that you can eat this pie today and I can't. Ahem: hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate

I've always loved Nations despite how greasy their burgers are, but the Berkeley location has one up'd the other locations i've been to simply because its a clean establishment. When you come here, you know what to expect, a 3/4 lb patty grease ball wrapped in a bun.

Great food, open late. Best burgers in the East Bay and the breakfast food is pretty good too. Sometimes the wait for food is long but you know that your food has been cooked to order. Once I thought I could skip the wait by ordering over the phone. I was disappointed that the they didn't start cooking my food until after I had arrived & paid for my food! Seems like they are slightly under-staffed.... they could use 1 or 2 more people either behind the cash register or to bus the tables. Nonetheless, Nation's will remain one of my regular stops for a quick burger fix!

I went there and had pancakes with friends after hours of drinking, and it was fabulous. But as are most things after drinking, they probably wouldn't be as good if I was sober. And thinking back on some of the other items on the menu, they are probably edible, but I wouldn't really go there on my own again.

we were starving and stumbling our way from san pablo to our buddy's house somewhere north of campus, this is the first place we found once we crossed from hearst over to university. love the prices, not so much the hamburger, it was just way too big! i know this is not a complaint, but for me it is, because it was so big that the bun kept slipping away, i hate that! decent fries. we didn't try any of the pies though, bummer. so i must now come back. they also have these huge booths that are great for groups or kicking your feet up. tokens for the bathroom at the counter.

Nation's is yet another place i am glad I don't live to close to. I'd be eating there 5 times a week or more. This place is nice and new (Although I think all Nation's a very well-kept) I've never sat there to eat, but they seem to have a good amount of space. The fare is all the old school goodies, including chili dogs and grilled cheese, as well as those pies. The ladies here do a great job dealing with the crowds, and although they put way too much of that Miracle Whip and odd size pieces of tomato and onions on the burgers, they are still a throwback treat which I can't resist. And they have breakfast and a decent amount of parking. A_OK!

For $20, here's what we feasted on: a Harvester, a wild (!) salmon sandwich, two orders of fries, two drinks, and large slice of cherry pie...on a real plate...with a metal fork. All delicious. And it's actually kind of nice inside. A step above your average burger joint, for sure. Really, wild salmon! Who does that?

great burgers worth 10min walk down the hill from McDonald to get better fast food pies are good too but not amazing wish it was closer to the campus

I was really craving a hamburger and this place is pretty close to where I live, so I thought I'd check it out. If you're looking for a gourmet burger, look elsewhere, but if you really just want a big cheeseburger that reminds you of a county fair or a little league concessions stand, this place is for you. Better quality than fast food, but not too much more expensive. I went in around 7 on a Friday and sat for a few hours doing work and eating. It was getting a bit noisy (screaming children) by the time I left, and the tables could have been a bit cleaner, but all in all It was a satisfying and filling meal.

Cheap burgers: check Veggie burger: check, aka Harvester Big slices of cheese: check Breakfast all day: check Pies: check For some decently priced not fast food chain burgers, here is your place. Ask for less mayo if you're not into it, cuz otherwise you'll wipe it off like me. The veggie burger is yum, the pies are better. A small slice is enough for two if you're not looking to overeat. Chocolate creme pie is good. Breakfast to be had next time. You can sub hashbrowns and toast for french toast too! Note FT is 4$+, HB and Toast is 3$.

    (3)
  • Jake W.

I had breakfast, so I haven't tried the burgers yet. That said, the breakfast is about what you'd expect. Decent, diner-ish food. The hashbrowns weren't the best and little undercooked for my taste, but the eggs, ham, and toast were good enough. Pretty good value for money, too.

A somewhat classy burger joint - I would say that it is on par with In & Out in terms of food taste & quality, but a tiny bit nicer because of the decor and atmosphere (seems like an older demographic than the typical In & Out). They make a great assortment of pies and cheesecakes too!

Berkeley has some kind of ordinance limiting restaurants opening past midnight or something - it's freakin' irritating! Finding late night grub is tough especially when I work/study late, then hit the gym late, consequently wanting to eat late. There just needs to be more places open late... ...so my friends and I checked Nation's out after ballin'. Grub [3 stars]: *Diner-style chow - you can see the kitchen as they whoop up the grill items fresh *Have ordered the grilled chicken, bacon cheeseburger, grilled cheese, fries *They don't use real cheese (sorry, I've become a dairy snob from Cheeseboard!) *Pies are decent - nothing spectacular but won't make you drool either...however, at midnight when you're hungry, most things taste good! *Ordered strawberry cheesecake and custard pie You should know: *As mentioned below, no waiter service which is good because by this point you just want to grub-a-dub and jet *Staff is really friendly Final Call: Nation's is amazing at 12-1AM in the morning when EVERYTHING ELSE IN FREAKIN' BERKELEY IS CLOSED...

My roommate recently introduced me to this place as he's into similar cheap food. Compared to many of the other reviews of Nation's, I may be an anomaly. I actually had Nations sober, and it was still great. I got the cheeseburger and fries meal, which came out to be about $5. The cheeseburger was massive. The piece of beef was large, unlike most burger shops. They also gave a great portion of lettuce, tomato, and onion, and all were fresh. I'll agree with the other reviews that the fries weren't the absolute best in the world, but whatever. They're just typical french fries, I wasn't looking for anything out of this world, especially for the price. I saw a lot of reviewers also complaining about the wait time. We called in advance and placed our order. When we got their 10 minutes later, our food was just getting completed and we were on our way.

  • Jen S.

I waited for a very long time for my order. All my friends received their food already and orders after me (that contained portions of my order) were also served as well. After which, when I received my food, it wasn't very good. The linguica was overcooked to the point that I couldn't get my plastic fork to spear through it and my two eggs over easy were popped in my container. This wasn't my first time here and I've tried other food (burgers, fries, dessert...). Each time, the service is mediocre and the food is average at best. Your best bet is to order dessert -- to go.

Burgers and... pie! ....and breakfast! Since this place is open till 1:30am, +1 for late night gorging. I actually really like the burgers (quarter pound of beef) with the classic fixings of tomatoes, lettuce, onions. You can get pickles or grilled onions on request. Fries are meh but I guess they are fried in canola oil for the health conscious. Shakes are nothing to write home about. It's very basic burgers and stuff but it hits the spot for sure. I don't feel particularly bad or laid down with grease after I eat these too. But seriously, $3 for 1/4 of a pie is pretty great for late night shenanigans. The pie isn't super duper, but hey it's there along with the burgers! I'm curious to try the breakfast next time I come here because I am a breakfast fiend. LOVE BREAKFAST. Until the next late night stop!

The service here was terrible. The place was not busy and 15 minutes after I placed my order they were still not working it. Went up to the (confused) cashier and told her that I wanted my money back. Another, older, woman came over, asked what the problem was, and said she'd make my order right away, which she did. I'm used to going to the big Nation's in El Cerrito and the one in Orinda. Both of them function effectively. Another problem: this place was dirty, there were dirty dishes sitting on many, many tables. I commented on this and a worker came around and picked them up. My question: where is the management of this operation????????????????

I will probably be stoned for saying this, but I have to admit that I prefer Nation's burgers to those of In N Out. I love INO, and I'll give it to them that they probably have the freshest and best-quality ingredients out of all of the chains in its price bracket, but the few times I get to have it these days always leads to the conclusion that their burgers are too salty for me. Nation's has a whole 'nother problem: it's about three times the size of an INO burger. It's really a pretty piece of heart attack served with pickles and grilled onions, if you so wish, but it tastes so good. Their cheese is rich and velvety, their pickles are something else-- I can't point a finger on it. Pardon me for eroticizing processed cheese and vinegary cucumbers, but really, sandwiched between the soft buns at Nations with a griddled meat patty, they are magic. Sure, a lot of the times I prefer a charcoal-grilled patty over a griddled one. I have Oscar's for that. But Nations is for when I'm feeling really naughty, for when I want to wrestle with almost a pound of food in my hand (NOTE: the patties are not 3/4 pounders; that's what the entire totals to. You didn't seriously think you were eating almost a pound of cow. What do you think you are, a pig?) and then have a slice of pie afterwards. My favorite is the coconut cream, which is probably not exceptionally done at Nation's, but fortunately it is one that is very difficult to fuck up, and Nation's goes the easy route. Their pie crust is more on the crumbly side as opposed to flaky. I'm sure there's a ton of artificial additives and what-not, and really, for a fruit pie one should have a flaky crust. But it goes well with the cream pies; I would pick the banana or coconut cream over, say, the strawberry tart, which is a seasonal offering of fresh strawberries drenched in syrup and then haplessly thrown into a pie shell. I have to say that I'm not a fan of their pumpkin or sweet potato; something's off with the spice. But if it's approaching midnight and I have to have me some pie, I'll usually let minor technicalities slide. The major problem that Nation's has is that they try to spread themselves too thinly. One bite of their chili is proof that they need to stick to burgers. Although I'm dying to try their breakfasts, fresh off the griddle, if even the hash browns always look limp and unappetizing. Great burgers, good pies, and one of the only restaurants open past nine. All contributing factors to why I love this place so much. And why I should probably hit the gym more often.

  • Isaac C.

This place is great but if you are dieting; stay away from this place. One entree will exceed your daily intake of 2000 calories. I was told that the quality of hamburger joint is determined by the amount of grease on to-go bags and i have to admit, my bags were pretty much transparent. Still love this place, great burger with come cheesecake is simply put: heavenly.

If you eat at this Nation's Giant Burgers--look up. That's me in one of those apartment windows, mooning you for not calling me and inviting me. We've eaten there--saddest salmon burger ever. I'm sure that the hamburgers are edible, but I'm in my apartment half a block away eating some lentils I cooked in my new slow cooker, along with some veggies we bought at the Berkeley Farmers Market. I'm a home cookin' gal now, so too bad, Nations.

One would expect the slowest burger chain in the area would at least have the management capable of the training required to take your order instead of standing in front of you taking a personal phone call. But, not tonight! I guess they were unsupervised tonight? One guy started to take my order, then answered the phone told me the next guy would assist me, then handed the receiver to said guy who proceded to have a conversation in Spanish completely unrelated to taking a phone order. He didn't use the register during, before, or after the phone call. And, after he was done, he didn't speak to me. He just walked away without taking my order. Needless to say I won't be telling anyone to come here in the future. It's already the slower of two slow branches in the Berkeley area. The food is usually good, but obviously management isn't paying attention to what's going on in this store.

Just came back from there. After 21 minutes spent waiting next to the counter, the girl who took my order comes up to me and says " What was your number again?". I showed up my ticket and said "that's 20minutes that I'm waiting for a slice if cheesecake. I think that's a little long". She did not say a word and grabbed a slice that she put in a box and handed it out to me. Once again, not a word. No sorry, thank you, bye, nothing. 20min for a slice of cake, even at a rush hour, that's a little bit too much. I will not be back.

Probably my favorite burger place in Berkeley (right across the street from Trader Joes). Always come hot, fresh, and made to order. The one on University is pretty nice for the amount of traffic they see. I always found it best to order by phone because the line can be huge more often than not. The ole cheeseburger with a strawberry shake is my normal. Always parking(which can be hard to say in Berkeley. Good prices too.

I walked in here with a giant fake mustache on. Food took awhile to prepare, but this place is kind of amazing. Open late, is pretty darn cheap, and serves all the right things (breakfast food, pies, shakes, hamburgers, fries). Highly recommended.

Been awhile since I've wrote a review and hate to be negative but gotta put the warning out there. Eaten there lot's of times but it was so bad it was three strikes and yer out in one sitting. Keep in mind the restaurant at the time was fully staffed and a slow night. My burger and fries were served lukewarm. My hamburger bun was so flattened it had creases in it like a senior's face. It was like flatbread that could not hold the contents of the burger and the burger and dressings kept spilling out, thanks also to the overwhelming amount of sauces. The burger/bacon had strange flavors to them. My cheese fries had unmelted cheese on it and again lukewarm. I know I could have asked them to remake it but there was no confidence that it could be made better so I got out when I could. Out home now writing this sick to my stomach. Not Joking I hope I throw up soon to get rid of this sensation inside my stomach. Serious...instantly sick and I have eaten at lot's of sick crap. Go down the street further to Foster's Freeze for an old style burger.

Four stars for three words: chocolate cream pie The stuff is amazingly addictive, like opium in a pie shell and it has the same effect on my brain. This location is a nice alternative from the one in El Cerrito. For one thing is it safe (UC and Berkeley police eat here a lot) and I'll trade eating with the homeless over the clueless any day. I've never been a fan of their burgers. Too much "salad" between the average tasting buns and they keep the lettuce and tomatoes so cold it shocks the poor, undersized patty. Always too much mayo. It just not worth the effort telling the lady how you want it and since she won't speak much English anyway, will probably screw it up. Just say "Giant Breakfast, please" and you won't go wrong. I like breakfast for dinner once in a while and this a decent choice.

Considering how much I love Nations in Daly City, this one was a huge letdown. My burger came under a HUGE glop of mayonnaise. Granted I asked for a cheeseburger with mayo, but when there is more mayo than burger I have issues. When I bit into it, all I could taste was mayo, I couldn't find my burger. No exaggeration. In some bites there was pure mayo and bun, I don't' know where the burger went. I tried to finish the burger aiming to have just one good bite but halfway through I ended up running back into the restaurant and throwing up. Ruined my experience. I had been looking forward to it also for hours, from when I first drove into Berkeley on my way to a morning meeting. In fact when all my meetings were over, I literally ran to my car to go to Nations. Got in line, ordered, just as 8 different parties of people walked in. Congratulated myself for beating the lunch rush. Waited anxiously as I watched them make my burger. Ran to pick it up when they called my magical # 168. Rushed to the car to get in, and eat it............and then............. Huge letdown, I don't know if I will recover from this one. I hope the other locations aren't like this. Who the heck has a burger on the side with their mayo?

GREAT PIES INDEED--specifically BANANA CREAM PIE I don't really like sweets but the one and only thing i eat at nations is BANANA CREAM PIE. Topped with lots of whipped cream, it's still not too sweet which I like. Make sure to always eat it cold if you buy a whole pie to take home (which is what i do). nations as a whole is prob only like 3 stars but definitely 5 stars for banana cream pie!

This is not Zuni Cafe or even Barney's. It's Nation's Giant Hamburgers. No focaccia bread, no real cheese, no nutritional information, no one is getting tips----no muss, not fuss. But, they do have diner-style comfort food available after most of the rest of the B's food options have tucked in for the night or closed for the holidays. (Yes, I have brought Nation's pies to smancy parties and yes they got eaten before the trendy mini cupcakes and creme brulees.) Plus they have some less naughty options (wild salmon burgers, salads with meat, etc.) Just the other night after a freezing graduation at the Greek Theater the other night, I enjoyed an excellent sweet potato tartlet and a .90cent cup of Oakland's-own, organic Zumi black tea! For Berkeley Nation's, I have adopted some simple guidelines to keep me safe and sane: Be happy the Berkeley has a Nations. (San Pablo's is somehow always dirty, Oakland's is too far, and the El Cerrito's is the only place in the East Bay where I have ever seen a person move their shot gun from their car into the trunk in public. Yes, the other patrons and I all got ready to duck under our tables and had audible sighs of relief when we realized he was a hunter trying to practice "safe gun".) Call ahead if you can. Expect weekend mornings and holidays to be wild and enjoy it. (Where else in the B are you going to see church ladies in big hats, right next to hipsters, high school students, hippies, and Cal Football players?) Expect to be VERY full unless you partake in one of the lighter options: salads, salmon burger, hot dogs, EXCELLENT BLT, etc. Be nice to the staff (According to the sign recently posted at the door advertising job openings they are making a bit over minimum wage. However, when I come in after a crazy day at work they remember my order. Yes, that's comfort and food.)

Went today for a celebration of Pi Day (3/14). We ordered the lemon meringue pie and the featured pie of the day, an apricot pie. The lemon meringue pie was decent for the first half, but was overwhelmingly sweet for the latter half. The meringue itself was decent, but not great. The apricot pie consisted of a thick jelly, with only one piece of real fruit. I found it also to be overwhelmingly sweet. I prefer my fruit pies with more REAL fruit, instead of the canned variety, so was disappointed by the lack in both respects. Overall, the pies were ok, but not great. Our recommendation is to order the small slice (1/6 pie), or be prepared for a HUGE slice. If you have a large group, order one large pie and dig in.

The veggie burgers are really good, especially late a night. It would be best if the place was open later, though. The pies are really good. My friends and I took a pumpkin pie home and it was delicious. I don't like the way the combos are sold. They don't have any combo deals and fries and drinks need to be purchased separately.

I am a huge Nation's fan, and if I keep eating there I will be a REALLY HUGE Nation's fan!! Picture a 3/4 pound burger (no kidding) on a bun overloaded with lettuce, onion (raw or cooked), pickles, tomatoes, and an incredible sweet-tangy mayonnaise. Just be careful that you don't hurt yourself trying to take a bite, it's so big. If you order a cheeseburger, you'll get a lot of cheese. If you order a bacon burger, you'll get a lot of bacon. And to top it off, there are a number of pies to choose from! Personally, I'm hooked on the coconut cream, but I've had the pecan and apple pies, and they are good, too. Danger - a "normal" slice is 1/4 of a pie. It may be safer to order a half slice! Oh, and these huge portions don't have huge prices - at least not in comparison to other restaurants in Berkeley. Actually, Nation's is often cheaper as well as their portions being larger, which makes their food an incredible bargain. The only time Nation's skimps on the serving size is with their fries - I've had more fries at places giving out free samples. The fries themselves are perfect - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I just don't understand why the portions are so small in comparison to everything else at Nation's.

Giant name. Terrible burger. The bun immediately fell apart after only 1 stinking bite. I need my cheeseburger buns to be like my favorite pair of boxer briefs...supportive. Especially when I'm paying $8 for a cheeseburger, fries, and coke. Essentially, this is fake diner food served in a fast food environment. 2 stars.

Mm, mm! Don't pay attention to the haters. These are some good, greasy burgers. On a diet? This is a bad place. Want to drown your sorrows in some good old fashioned, greasy comfort food? COME ON IN! Their burgers are, well, giant. 3/4 of a pound of cow -- only veggie loving Berkeley-types could hate it. You guys can have your lentils and brown rice -- that just leaves more meat for the meat eaters. LIKE ME :D They serve the classic American burger here -- grilled on the flat top with crisp lettuce and tomato with the crispy toasted bun slathered generously with mayo. Add some cheese and grilled onions -- yeah, that's a bit of caloric heaven right there folks. Their fries are also worth mentioning. Truly great fries are a rare thing these days but luckily, Nation's has them. They're golden and crisp on the outside, warm and mealy on the inside with just the right amount of salt. Truly good stuff. And yes, there's breakfast all day. As I waited for my burger, I salivated jealously at other people's breakfast plates. Classic American diner breakfasts at awesome prices. Who can complain? A cheeseburger, fries, small slice of pie and a drink will set you back about $10. Not the cheapest meal in the world if you get the whole shebang but at about $4 for a cheeseburger, it's actually quite a deal for the size.

This place is alright, but I'll say downright that I like In-N-Out better. The sauce on the burger (mayo) was a little too much. Plenty of seating, fast ordering, waiting took a while since there were quite a few people. I only ordered a cheeseburger since I wasn't so hungry but the burger was just average. The Cheesecake Factory has even bigger burgers. The parking lot gets full fast so be prepared to find street parking in the neighborhood, which is not really easy since there are a lot of red zones and "No Parking" signs. Don't leave your receipt on the counter when waiting to pick up your order, things will get lost for sure.

I love the Nation's. A staple for late night munchies. You can't go wrong with the grilled cheese with fresh tomatoes, lettuce and onions- grilled to perfection. This location is a lot bigger than the Daly City location.

Well, I only get the vegetarian burgers, so I can't comment on their meat. I eat here often (well, often for me, maybe once every month or two), and have generally been pleased with the service. The food takes a while when there's a long line, but that's what you get when they cook each burger only when it's ordered. Prices are good for a burger joint: Not as cheap as the fast-food chains (or so I hear, I never go there), but less expensive than most restaurants. The "dressing" (burger sauce) is a bit intense for me, so I always order burgers without dressing. The sauted onions are a great addition (no charge). There's a couple options of mustards, as well as onions, tomatoes, catsup, and BBQ sauce at the condiment table. The pies are good for store bought. Nothing to get all excited over, but nothing to pass on either. They now have salads as well, but I haven't had them either (my mom liked hers). My 80 year old parents like to eat here too. My dad can get a burger and my mom a salad. I"d agree with Amy E. that they did a great job on the remodel a few years ago.

Great bargain and yummy food. Make your burger an Ole (green chile) and grilled onions for a special treat. Java shakeout as good as chocolate one. My fault for getting something with coffee at a non-cafe in Berkeley!

Consistent. Best when you have cravings. Their pies are affordable and will do the job of getting the pie-hit you need when you're body is going pie-crazy. Their other food is good. Standard breakfast and hamburgers. Try one of the burgers with an overeasy or sunnyside-up egg on the patty. (like fatburger.) It is, yes, delicious. love ezra

I've been coming here a lot recently. Its biggest perk is that it's open past 12am when all other places on University and Shattuck close up. The food isn't amazing, but it's the best you can get this late at night. That being said, I usually order the Jr. One-egger with french toast and a slice of banana cream pie. If you're allergic to nuts like I am, you can just ask the people working to spoon off the nuts. Also, I definitely recommend switching out the hash browns and toast for french toast instead on the -egger plates. Delicious!

Came here the days I was hungover from nights of raging in Berkeley. I only got the breakfast items since my friends told me to. The portions were not as big as I thought since I left still a little bit hungry. But their breakfast quality is great. Good place to dine in and chill.

This place is the epitome of Meh, as described by the two star rating. It was past 10pm on a rainy Friday night when we were looking for somewhere fast and inexpensive to eat close by home. Everything around seemed to be just closed but we came across Nation's open til way late at night with a parking lot and only about a mile from Cal. We went in, the place was moderately filled but not crowded, it wasn't filthy but it didn't seem that clean either (re: tables, the drink fountain and the condiment counter). Service was soso, the cashier was the least amount of nice possible without being rude and it took quite a while for our order. We ordered a hamburger it was average at best, actually not much better than McDonald's but a little more expensive. We also ordered fries which were not horrible but not great, rather yawn. I ordered a Harvester veggie burger as well. It was alright because GOOD veggie burgers under $10 seem to be hard to come by in this town but it was flooded with mayo. If I was desperate and it was late I'd stop by here again but probably not. However, I would totally go here rather than McDonald's if it came down to it.

This place has a simple approach: cook burgers, make fries and try to tempt you with pie. The cheeseburger was competent. The burger itself had a nice off the grill taste. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. The fries were also sufficiently edible. Nothing spectacular, but the interior is, gasp, nice and clean compared to so many other places in Berkeley. No doubt the cleanliness has to do with its chain pedigree, but it's nice to go into a restaurant once in a while that doesn't look like it was built and maintained as an afterthought.

On the way to the Snoop Dogg Concert we were starving and happened to drive by a Nations Burger. A huge group of asian kids ordered right before us and it seemed like ages before we got our order. It was totally worth it.. the burgers were huge and tasted really fresh. I thoroughly enjoyed the excess of tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and pickles.. it filled me up and made me happy. =)

The remodel they've done on this place is awesome. Stained wood, brushed steel, and weird lights - it looks like the bastard child of a retro diner and a Danish modernist house. The grilled cheese sandwiches here are friggin' amazing. HUGE sandwiches with tons of veggies on them, prepared pretty quickly and priced at just $2.90. Definitely best with the grilled onion. It's an order-at-the-counter and seat-yourself fast food place, so don't expect a lot of atmosphere. It's a hell of a lot better than most chain joints, and probably my second-favorite burger chain behind In-N-Out.

Oh, Nation's. I used to love you. (And I assumed it was a mutual thing.) Back when I was still a budding foodie, inexperienced in the ways of placing fine cuisine in my maw, I thought it didn't get better than gigantic plates of omelets, hash browns, and a side of chili cheese fries. And pie. Now my eyes have been opened, and I see you for what you are: greasy, overpriced, and rapidly going downhill. Omelets are flavorless and pale, hash browns drowning in pools of grease that do nothing to enhance actual flavor, chili cheese fries still tasty but portions growing ever more diminutive and laughable (and 50 cents for two slices of Kraft cheese?!). I still crave your pie, though I know that better crusts exist out there. Blame it on my fascination with delicious artificial cherry filling (I can't help loving it!). I'll always have the memories though. But still: extra star for breakfast, dull as it may be, 24-7.

The later it gets, the better this place tastes. It's not as good as Barney's but it's got a few things going for it. First of all, it's open until 12:30 am every friggin night of the week. Didja ever forget to eat and everything was closed? I have. Secondly, the architecture is oddly too good for the food. It's really nicely done. Thirdly, the food. It's okay. Kinda fresh, the bun was okay, the meat was overcooked. I shoulda asked for it medium rare. They didn't ask. At least its all made to order. The pies are not gourmet, but fresh, and you can buy either a giant slice or a smaller slice. Nice touch.

Update, 9/8/2007: Bumping this down to two stars from four stars for two reasons. (1) After trying several other burger places around the Bay Area, namely Pearl's in San Francisco and The Smokehouse in South Berkeley, Nation's fails to deliver. The chili cheese fries at Nation's is particularly atrocious -- plain chili with slices of processed cheese plopped on top of it. (2) The wait is ridiculous on weekend nights. It's nice to be in a crowded diner at night since you feel safer, but it's just not worth the 20-30 minute wait to get your food. Original review follows. ----- Unlike any major city in Southern California, In-N-Out doesn't rule supreme in Berkeley. Going to burger joints around here have resulted in a string of disappointments. And they're overpriced. Nation's is an okay substitute for In-N-Out, but not really. It seems like they use big, fat wads of lettuce and onions to give the impression that they're gigantic. Their menu selection is definitely respectable, since they have pies, salads, and breakfast items. The prices are good -- $3.90 for a cheeseburger handily beats places like Bongo Burger. Beware their breakfast menu. The first time I came here, their hash browns were poorly cooked, dry pieces of trash. The second time I came, it was nice and crispy. Same for their sausage and bacon. If you're able to, I'd recommend making the trip to Ann's Kitchen on Telegraph over the breakfast menu at Nation's because it has a better value. But for burgers, Nation's is worth a visit.

I LOVE PIEEEE, I was craving PIE late one night. I called Nations on a recommendation- they had like 6 diffrent pie options at 11pm on a Sunday!! I couldn't decide, so I got the Lemon Cream & Pecan. Being a woman who was brought up on Homemade Dutty South/Texas Pecan Pie- I was ready to totally diss it. Suprise Suprise it was EXCELLENT! Just a tip, their Regular slice is pretty big- even for an avid pie lover.

We were searching for a good, greasy burger. We found it. With grilled onions and no dressing. Along with some fries, a strawberry shake (it had bits of fruit in it!), and some lemon meringue pie, this was a tasty dinner. Not remotely healthy or gourmet, but decent diner-type food. The only negative was the service. The employees there seemed utterly bored and were completely unengaging. The girl at the register just stared at me as I asked questions and placed my order. They made the shake when they put the burgers on the grill, but didn't give us the shake until everything was done, so it was a little melty. We're still on the prowl for a really fantastic diner burger, but for now, this one will do.

I love this place. It is pretty busy but it is spaced out enough for you to avoid sitting next to any doucebags. I am generally not fond of burger joints due to the ever present condiment scourge, but they keep it pretty clean. Also, they have a pump with BBQ sauce at the condiment bar. YAY! Something for me to dip my fries in! I went wednesday night and got a delicious fuckin' open face chili cheese burger with onions. Pure delight. Last time I got the Ole cheeseburger with big juicy slices of chilis on it. Wonderful. Since this place has re-opened it is hard to beat. I sometimes like to watch them making the burgers. They stack 'em like an artisan and really seem to care about the presentation of their food. The breakfasts are decent too. I alwys get tooo full for desert, but one day I will try the pie...

I have come to the conclusion that it takes a rocket scientist to take a customer's order correctly at this particular Nation's. First experience Me: May I have a carb-less cheeseburger? Cashier: What is a carb-less cheeseburger? It's called lettuce wrap. Me thinking: You know exactly what I mean so why the hell do you need to ask me what it is? No need for the attitude! Second experience Me: Can I have a lettuce wrap bacon cheeseburger? Burger came; no bacon. Third experience Me: May I have a lettuce wrap bacon cheeseburger? Cashier: Anything else? Me: And a regular cheeseburger (for my bf) Cashier: You want that lettuce wrapped too? Me: No, regular. (Did I not say that already?!) Cashier: Anything else? Me: No. Cashier: Your total is blah blah blah. My bf: Can we get grilled onions on those? Cashier began to shake his head and annoyed at the fact that we didn't say so earlier. He continued to shake his head for over 5 seconds. Me thinking: Geez! Sorry! Burger came; no bacon (again!) . He sure as hell charged me for it tho (this time and last)! My "lettuce wrap" cheeseburger was wrapped in multiple small pieces of lettuce instead of the usual larger, outer pieces of the lettuce head. My burger fell completely apart before I even took a bite. There were 82938957035428 rings of raw onion, along with the grilled onion. Does it look like I want all that onion? At this point, I want to take my burger and shove it in his face (or the woman who made it.) Breathe and woosa... Me thinking: Forgive him. He hasn't gotten a chance to get his "rocket scientist degree" yet. When he does, he will get your order right...

This revamped establishment is a great place to eat late at night. It is not open too late, but it gives you options from all day breakfast to burgers and fries to pie. Lots and lots of sweet, precious pie. Tonight I had a cheeseburger with grilled onions. It was awesome. Then step two was a regular slice of lemon meringue pie. With the new cleaned up look, Nations is a pleasant experience.

I think I would give 3.5 star. On Saturday hot afternoon, we went there and ordered a hamburger, salmon burger, chili cheese burger and milk shake. I wish they could have turn up the a/c a little bit more, since it's hot outside. The food were pretty good and my husband like the thick strawberry milk shake and also they serve breakfast!!!...The price ...hemmm....in this economy....excellent...

3 words: BANANA CREAM PIE got it? Have never really tried the food here but I know that the banana cream pie is always good and always worth the calories. just try it. the cream is kind of like the cream at beardpapa's in terms of consistency and taste... now imagine that with bananas a bit of whipped cream, flaky crust and almonds. if that sounds at all enticing, the pie is, i assure you, a million times better =)

Whenever I'm visiting friends in Berkeley, this is the fastest place to get greasy food for a hangover. It just rocks. Of course, I've been here at 3am after the bars, and during the middle of the day on a Sunday, or any day after some major drinkage up in the Berk. It takes a bit of time for the "Fast" food to come, but it's worth the wait, kind of like an In N Out with a tad more style. I mean, burgers, onion rings, and homemade pies, who can go wrong?

    (4)
  • Jen C.

Cheap, good food, what's not to like? The hamburgers are my fave, fresh produce, juicy patty, and toasted bun, yum! Chili hot dog is a okay, chili was good, but where was the hot dog? Chili cheese fries are a great addition to your hamburger. The strawberry shake is delicious, fresh strawberry chunks and smooth and rich! They also serve breakfast, pancakes, eggs, and sausage. And don't forget the cheesecake! My kind of place to go for a late dinner.

So after a night of drinking and playing Rock Band for the New Year, the hubby and I were looking for some seriously guilty food to gorge on while we knew the rest of the world was making resolutions to avoid such food. The Nations in Berkeley has a hell of a lot better atmosphere than the one in Fremont. It's been fixed up and BONUS- has a parking lot! The burgers are huge- and unless you like eating whole raw onions in your spare time I suggest you tell them to go easy on the onions. The only beef (haha! puns are fun!) I have with this place is the staff. Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Guadalupe, who was the shift supervisor. For such a prestigious position she had the personality of a wet mop and seriously looked pissed I was even there. In the past I've had spotty service, but last night was the one experience that 'caused me to yelp. In trying to buy a pie it took almost 10 minutes to ascertain that, no, they did not have cherry pie. Annoying. The Bacon Cheeseburger is quite good. They need to add onion rings to the menu. That is all.

Seems like a classic local fast food joint. It is so much nicer with the remodeling done a few years ago - it used to be a really sad, run-down diner. A couple other reviews talk about grilled cheese but I didn't see that on the menu. I had the "meatless" "Harvester" burger, which appeared to be a Gardenburger, for $3.80. It came with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and onion, and I asked for pickles too. They don't have onion rings, my #1 fatty American food favorite, too bad for me. A woman across from me was eating chocolate cream pie that looked really good - I have to go back for that.

  • Happy C.

Chili cheese omellette followed by a slice of cherry cheesecake. Now that's a great meal! If only they served it at 2 AM like the other Nation's. Boo on Berkeley for not having late night eateries! But, like all Nation's, the freak show is usually in attendence.

Now, I know it's "Nation's Giant Hamburgers" but don't come here for the the burgers. Come here for the breakfast, the grilled cheese, and the pie. Full-fledged breakfast with eggs, pancakes, and bacon(more than i could eat) for less than $6. If you go in the evening, try the loaded grilled cheese. It's fantastic with grilled onions and bacon. This is good ol' 'merican cookin' at its finest!

  • Brian R.

Nation's is pretty good. The chicken sandwich is always a mess and falls apart, but tastes ok. Breakfast is good. I get the pancakes with sausage. They have many types of pie. The architectural redesign sets this location apart. The place looks as though it belongs in an Edward Hopper painting and got written up in the Chronicle. That deserves an extra star or two.

  • shawn g.

The burgers are super sloppy here, falling out all over the table if you don't eat it directly from the wrapper. The service was a bit slower than I would have liked, and although we bought a pie that was delicious, they refused to give us forks to eat it with. I might go back to purchase a pie, but I'll look elsewhere for burgers next time I'm in Berkeley.

    (2)
  • Tiffany T.

i dont know why, but the burgers are prettttty good. they're moist and juicy and you can request grilled onions. yumm. it is a bit greasy though so eat sparingly. their breakfast are kinda small. i recommend the linguica ( i have no idea what that is) over the bacon. don't forget to dab thoroughly with napkins, its not a girly thing to do! i don't really like their pies...or fries...but this is definitely great for late night cravings.

This is a nicer place after their remodeling. You can't fault a place for sticking to a strategy of providing large portions of greasy fatty american food. Their menu is decent, not as expansive as Mels but then it is cheaper as well. Their pies are what keep them afloat, because the hot food is decent but combining fatty pies just seals the deal sometimes.

It seems like every time we go to this Nation's, they alway misplace our order. This most recent time, we went in to order a milk shake and two orders of fries. We were not even getting a burger, which they take hours to make by the way. We sat and waited for a while, and watched two people who ordered after us get their food first. their orders had fries too! after asking the workers where our order was, they only then started making it. and when we did finally get our fries, they were extremely soggy! usually it's just the service that is bad, but this time both the food and service were horrible. the only reason we go is because of the great late hours. it's too bad Nation's can't hire competent people to work the night shift.

    (1)

Not a big hamburger fan, but Nation's is great for a dirt-cheap breakfast and the pies are great diner fare. The chocolate cream pie is so rich and sweet that I can never finish even half of my slice. Oof.

The service is not the fastest, but I do like their chili fries and their burgers. Fries are always made fresh to order. Their burgers are freshly made, buns loaded with mayo, and topped with real lettuce and tomatoes. I admire the pies from afar cause I find they look better than they actually taste, but then again, I have high standards for pies. Modern decor. Moderately clean restroom. Gorgeous remodel. Easy parking lot. Good place for a quick meal with kids or without. Generally feels slightly safer than their former location in El Cerrito.

oh nation's, thank you for making so many variations of strawberry desserts! - strawberry cheesecake - strawberry tart - strawberry shake - and more! oh and i never knew a huge plate of chili cheese fries could taste so delicious and kinda healthy at the same time. :) oh yeah and my boyfriend swears their BLT is the BEST.

3/4 pound burger for less than 4 bucks?! Hella good! I regret not going to Nation's more when I was a student here, but a work detail brought me back to dear ol' Berkeley and boy am I glad I rediscovered it! The burger is well built: the meat is firm, but hot dry, the bun doesn't get soggy even as you eat it, and all the veggies are super fresh. Fries aren't great, kinda hard on the outside. My friend got the banana cream pie, from which i stole the last bites, and it was also pretty darn good, creamy and smooth but not too sweet, with neatly piped whipped cream on top. They have this new iced tea machine where you can choose from regular black tea, sweet black, sweet green, or sweetened Nestea; I tried to do half reg/half sweet tea but one of them was totally diluted, boo. Service style here is order at the counter and sit down, although the dining room is quite nice w/ a small vase of flowers on each table.

This was my first time at a Nation's Hamburgers location. This spot in Berkeley has been recently remodeled (in the last few years), so it is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. I got the chicken sandwich. It was quite big and unwieldy. Next time I would have to ask for no mayo as they put quite a bit on. The price was right though, the meal was quite affordable and the portions were huge. Fries were so so. Probably won't be coming back here a lot, but does the job if you're in the market for a filling burger. The also offer a veggie burger and the grilled cheese with everything piqued my interest.

grabbed a cheeseburger and fries here last night. the burger was pretty big and fresh. the grilled onions were great. lots of mayo - just the way i like it! fries were good - however, my only knock is that they only offer one size and i finished them off pretty fast and found myself wanting more fries. also, the fountain coke was the best i've tasted in a long time. it was just the right syrup mix. although i didn't order any, the pies looked excellent. i was pleasantly satisfied with this burger joint.

tasty bigger-than-my-head burgers. i absolutely adore the apricot pie, but forget the strawberry shake. despite the occasional 'shady' people frequenting this place.. it's a no-frills quasi-diner decent enough to satisfy a fatty food fix.

So Thanksgiving was lonely without pie and I was craving pie since then until Monday when my good friend Jeff suggested I go find some pie on my way out of Berkeley at Nation's. Well, what a great suggestion. Now the pumpkin pie wasn't extraordinary, but that's not what I needed. I needed good ole' pie, and that's what Nation's has. I sat and enjoyed my pie, and when I decided that pie was no more a unique experience, I packed it up to go. As I'm driving back into SF I see a homeless man with a big sign saying HUNGRY. And usually I don't help the homeless because they're usually just looking for money, but this time I was in the holiday mood, that's what pumpkin pie does, and I impulsively gave this man my pie remains. As he stared at it confused and I stared at him, my jaw dropped. The light was green and I drove off across Market and all I can think is "that man better eat that fucking pie, i hope he eats that pie, if he throws it out, dammit dammit dammit" i didn't want the pie back, but for a small second I really regretted giving away that pie...
