This review is only for the veggie muffaletta so it is not an honest assesement of their offerings which primarily contain meat. The sandwhich was just okay. Nothing bad about it but nothing great either.

Iunno 4 stars seems high but 3 seems low... but my crawfish étouffée was nothing spectacular, and neither were the hushpuppies. My friend's fried chicken was great though and I was sad I didn't get it. Down on alcatraz they just opened this joint called easy creole which I like more. And it's cheaper and faster so watch out!

My wife and I love coming here. Everything taste so dang good. She has even eaten on Bourbon St. in Louisiana and says that this place brings her right back.

There is definitely a long wait during rush hour (more than an hour on a Saturday night), but the food is definitely delicious and worth it. As other reviewers have said, the fried chicken is absolutely delicious. Our table also had the Voodoo Shrimp, the Fried Catfish, BBQ Ribs, and brussel sprouts. The meat is fall off the bone tender for the ribs, and the catfish and chicken are all perfectly fried, moist, and best of all BONELESS. One of the things I hate most about fried foods is when I have to mess around and look for bones, but that was not an issue here. If I had time I would definitely want to try and come back to get some of their other items as well.

This place is good, especially if you don't count calories and you don't mind grease on your food. But it's southern food after all, right? I tried the buttermilk fried chicken and the oyster po'boy...mmmmm. These were pretty much cooked to perfection. I've also heard good things about the gumbo and jambalaya as well. And the ambiance is great! I think Angeline's is perfect, intimate date place. The lights are dim and the jazzy music is nice. I'd want to go back, but I TRY (and literally fail) to stay away from fattening foods (although I'm a foodie..).

I love this place! I cant say enough good things about the food and service. I bring friends and family here when they come to visit and I order just for myself regularly.

Great service! The only thing was that we sat outside and the music was pretty loud. I ordered the gumbo and it definitely more on the luke-warm side. I didn't want to tell them to bring it back though because our server was so nice and accommodating. He kept checking up on us (they don't normally serve people outside too much but we brought our dog) and offered to fill up my dog's bowl. I got to come back to try the fried chicken and oysters!

Made reservation for 2 at Sunday 1pm. Good thing they told me ahead of time there is a 15 minute reservation hold as I managed to arrive at 1:15pm. Only place in Berkeley where I've had delicious jambalaya. As a matter of fact, one of the only places that even serves jambalaya. Healthy sized portions with savory, rich chicken, sausage, ham. I also had the mac and cheese, which is pretty good, but not as good as the mac and cheese you can get from FIVE.

I brought visiting friends here and I found that the restaurant is well suited as a hosting venue for a casual social dinner moment. The prices are good, and the food is better...so long as you don't get the typical Louisiana dishes. The red beans and rice and the jambalaya and the gumbo were mediocre/disappointing. But the mac n' cheese and the brussel sprouts and the mushroom appetizer and the deep fried chicken (with some sort of cream type sauce) were all freaking amazingly delicious. The waiter was nice and the host sat us despite the fact that the restaurant was pretty full and it was ten minutes to closing. We all had a great time and I will definitely be coming back... (just not for any of their cajun cuisine)

The fried catfish was delicious.....fried crispy but not hard. The potato salad had too much mayo for my tastes and not enough potato. The hush puppies with the honey butter were great and perfectly fried. I started my meal with a cup of gumbo which was well seasoned and had great flavor. The others in my party had the Voo Doo Shrimp & Shrimp Creole, and they loved their entrees as well. Will definitely come back!

I don't get the hype. But I also have to say that I ain't no Cajun food expert as well so not sure if Cajun is not my style. -Hush Puppies: Blah. Hard, bland, tasteless. I just don't get it. -Fried Chicken: the only redeeming factor for me. Very soft and tender. The sauce with the chicken- meh. The sweet mash potatoes: very standard. meh. -The shrimp dish with rice. Much too salty. In fact, after I got home, I mixed another half cup of rice into the dish and it was still salty! Wow. For the price we paid- def another over hyped and over rated restaurant in my books.

I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. And I ate the beignets at Cafe du Monde. Twice. And while they're definitely tasty, they didn't have ANYTHING on the beignets here at Angeline's. I was pretty shocked. Isn't Cafe du Monde the ultimate authority on beignets? But they weren't even close to the crispy fluffy pillows of deliciousness that's served at Angeline's. I'm not a huge fan of Angeline's entrees and I've posted about that previously. But the beignets here are extraordinary.

The BBQ shrimp was yummy! Green bean no good just steamed barely with lots of kosher salt and barely any Parmesan. The atmosphere is nice. But make a reservation just incase your whole party doesn't get there at the same time.

Overall, this place is a solid "Ok" - good service, nice ambience, decent wine, food is... not bad but nothing to rave about either. I had a catfish plate and I love fish every way you cook it, but this one was... just four or five pieces of "fried nothing", which is strange, normally catfish is juicy and buttery. I hear thir chicken is much better but as far as the fish goes - skip it

I was going to go 4 stars, but recently I visited and they expanded the restaurant. So 5 stars it is!!! The buttermilk fried chicken, baked mac and cheese, sweet potato mash potatoes, fried grits and crawfish, hush puppies, crawfish etuofee...ALL EXCELLENT!

  • Angela L.

Waiter was nice and attentive! The Brussels sprouts and Jumbalaya are amazing! The Brussels sprouts are pan fried in brown butter if I remember correctly and it is seriously delicious. The crispy leaves that find themselves detached from the brussel sprout itself tops it off! The Jumbalaya has a good balance of sausage and rice. There flavor is there and is extremely addicting. The side of mashed sweet potatoes is nothing too amazing but the mac n' cheese is a definite must try! The swamp water there is essentially just an Arnold Palmer! Also, the fried chicken is mediocre there!

The side dishes I had were perfection. The potato salad was so rich and flavorful that I would happily have made an entire meal of a few servings. Same goes for the mac and cheese - just fantastic. Unfortunately, the muffuletta was a disappointment. The olive salad in the sandwich was so overwhelmingly salty that I could barely taste anything else. It's a good thing that the sides were so filling, because most of the sandwich leftovers went to the dog.

4 or 5 stars for this lovely place. For the most part, the staff is great. Once in a while we'll get a server that manages to get on our nerves (for some reason, when someone calls us 'you guys' three times while taking our order, we get irritated). Most of the food is fantastic - rich, flavorful, spicy, and the portions are great. But, I still prefer NOLA for Gumbo and Jambalaya. The grilled prawns are a must!! The sauce that comes with it will make you feel you're doing something naughty... Overall, the food is really good, very nice portions, and the price is very fair.

Never been to New Orleans, but friends say the chow here is pretty close.. Our sample list... Hush Puppies..Yummy browned corn meal. Gumbo =Yummy All good, this was my 3rd visit. Parking in the area sucks & we parked blocks away in a residential area. Busy every time I have been, call aheadfor reservations.

Absolutely delicious food! The jambalaya and the desserts are my favorite, but everything else is also incredible. There's always jazzy music playing and the ambiance is delightful.

I really enjoyed this place. We were in town visiting and decided to stop in and give Angeline's a try. I've been to New Orleans a few times to see family, and I really think this place stands up to some of the restaurants I've tried there. I ordered the cat fish, which was served with hush puppies. Both were delicious. I also had a bit of my friend's voodoo shrimp - those were cooked perfectly and really just tasted like high quality seafood. It's hard to come across this type of food, especially prepared well, and I'd recommend giving them a shot!

  • Dorothygale T.

It's not authentic NOLA cuisine...so if you've experienced the real thing, you'll be disappointed. Otherwise, it's tasty. Super cliche decor, reminds me of one of those chains like Rainforest Cafe.

First, I am a little frightened of Yelp right now. I have not been to Angeline's since I have had a Yelp account, and I have never checked in here. Even so, it popped up as my SECOND (yes, second, meaning of all of the places around the Berkeley Oakland Area, this was the #2 one it thought I should review) suggested place. I thought only God could judge me (RIP Tupac). Or maybe Yelp IS God, judging the world, by allowing us to judge the world. Either way, I digress, this is crazy. Moving on, Angeline's is the knees of the bees, so to speak. If I lived in a culture that bowed to show respect, I would be licking the floor. If it were appropriate, I would rub their delicious chicken and mac and cheese all over my body and invite others to eat that goodness off of me, that is how amazing it is. The mac and cheese is to die for. I know some people say that, but this is literal. If you were to say "You can die, or that mac and cheese will disappear from the face of the Earth forever," my only option as a not totally awful human being would be to jump off the nearest building allowing the goodness that is their macaroni and melted cheese to enter the mouths of countless people who will then go on to spread world peace after being enlightened and seeing heaven. Then the Chicken. I love fried chicken. What is not to love? If you do not like fried chicken, please stop reading any of my reviews, you do not understand me as a human being, and I clearly do not understand you as the walking anomaly that you are. For the people still reading, this fried chicken is not fried chicken, it is THE fried chicken. The seminal work of all chicken-kind. Fried chicken has one of two problems. It is either bland and dry, or it is a pain to eat around the bones. Angeline has somehow ( I think it is magic or voodoo or something) managed to make moist, delicious, bone free fried chicken that enters your mouth with ease, and then makes your taste buds cry out in ecstasy "Please, give us more, we are not worthy." It is incredible. Next, Hush Puppies. For those of you who don't know what hush puppies are, slap your parents, guardians, whoever raised you across the face next time you see them for neglect, child abuse, and clearly poor parenting. Hush puppies are fired corn bread balls, and they are every bit as good as you might think. Are they filling? Yes! Are they amazing? Yes! Are they worth the 23.284 miles you will have to run to not be a fat A? YES, YES, A RESOUNDING YES!!!! Try them, you can thank me later. Finally, I cannot laud the other items like the ones mentioned above, but I have dabbled in various other foods at this fine establishment, and everything I have tasted from others has been amazing. They have a good variety, catfish, jambalaya, shrimp, and many other great options. On top of that, they have decent beer and wine, and their dessert menu is amazing, if you can fit it in. Now, after singing praise to Angeline (I might have made a Hey Arnold-esque idol of her in my closet, because she is clearly a deity), I need to cover the CONS. There is only one. Seating. Seating is tight, you may have to wait. But like any Red Sox fan waiting on season tickets for generations can tell you, some things are worth the wait. If they were not busy, would you trust that they are the best? Clearly not. Plus, they do not require you to stay, so go half a block down, grab a quick beer, chat with the local homeless folks or drunk college students, or just sit outside and await your orgasmic dining experience. So if you are ready to have your mind blown, do a couple things. 1. If you are someone who cares about weird things like "health" or "looking good," work out for a week straight, doing double days, so that you can enjoy your meal without whatever that feeling is people get when the binge. (I would give it a name, but again, I am normal, and I love fried chicken). 2. Gather all your friends and family (maybe send me a Yelp invite, as I may be free and would love to share some Hush Puppies with you) and go dine. 3. Remember extra underwear, I did use the term orgasmic in this review, be warned. 4. Have a horse drawn carriage ready to meet you after eating, because, REAL TALK, you won't be walking anywhere after that meal. Now go, live, be free, and enjoy your Fried Chicken.

Customer service is excellent, food is indulgent, buttery, and rich. One of our orders came out late, so the waitress told us it was on the house and offered us free dessert as well. Will definitely recommend to friends, for the quality of food and for the friendliness of the staff.

Well, hello Angeline's, why I do like it here! Seriously, amazing buttermilk fried chicken that is luxuriously crispy on the outside and oh so tender on the inside. I was, however, starving when I went in so I may have been biased. Beignets covered in so much powdered sugar it's as if they've been snowed on, yum! Bucket list worthy. And a great place to bring visiting people, though the place is so well decorated that it's like you're not in Berkeley at all.

You don't need me to tell you to check this place out. There are over 1500 reviews for that. But what I WILL tell you to try are the brussels sprouts, crawfish ettouffe, and voodoo shrimp. Oh, just do it. You're welcome in advance. :)

I went back to Angeline's for lunch. The red beans and rice was really good! I also had the gumbo and it was good. The red beans and rice is my favorite dish there now! Don't forget to get the sweet tea....I had 4 glasses for lunch!

Delicious food. My go-to spot in Berkeley. There's usually a wait so get a reservation or arrive early. Great mac n cheese, etoufee, and and bbq ribs.

I'm essentially happy when I can cover my food in Louisiana hot sauce. I put it on basically anything - toast, Chinese food, spam - and so often that, I forget how good it is on fried chicken. The cool thing about Angeline's fried chicken though, was that I didn't HAVE to cover it in Louisiana hot sauce to make it delicious. It just was, in all of it's juicy crispy glory. That pork gravy was super good, too. They need to rename the "strawberry lemonade" though. It was like drinking a Mountain Dew/Red Bull/Pixie Stick. Needless to say it didn't refresh me.

So, so good! I'm in danger of eating too much whenever I go to Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen. My favorite dish is the Jambalaya - the flavors meld together in a comprehensive way that I just can't do the justice of describing. My boyfriend loves their Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and says that the breading-to-chicken ratio is perfect. If you're a fan of desserts, try the Chocolate Pot de Creme if it's available - it's thick, smooth, and just the right amount of sweet. This is a great place for a date, or to bring friends for some delicious East Bay grub.

The place has a really odd and foul odor when u walk in. We almost left because of it. Kind of like funky gym underwear, like moldy cheese or rotting meat or a dead animal that is stuck in ur crawl space all winter and you don realize it until u turn in the heat. The food was ok, overpriced

I have been here multiple times and have never reviewed them! Everything here is delicious!! I love their deep fried catfish and their Mac n cheese. Here are some of the other dishes I have tried and have no complaints! Oyster PoBoy Catfish PoBoy Fried Chicken with sweet potatoes and green beans Gumbo Mushroom gumbo Jambalaya

Today I went to Angeline's with my friend the first time, finally, and I was not disappointed. We had hush puppies, buttermilk fried chicken and shrimp po'boy. They're all very good, and the chicken especially is extremely good! I know 5-star is a really high rating, but I mean...usually you just encounter meh kind of food and pay a lot of money for it. I feel comfortable about the price of Angeline's and the food is well worth it. The staff was very friendly too. So 5 stars. No doubt.

Sweet tea the real souther way. Yup love love it. Great food did I mention the fantastic mason jar mugs. This place was very enjoyable from my oyster poor boy to my bf benigets. That's Angeline's great bearkly experience

Was it good? Yes it was. Have I had better? Yes in the south. For california, this place is quite good. I went in there and ask them for their most popular dishes. That was the hush puppies, fried chicken, Jambalaya and Shrimp Creole. I also got Abita root beer (you don't see abita that often). The food was creamy, savory and heavy. Just the way I like it. I'd definitely come back to try more.
