I tried this place for the first time this morning thanks to my dad. I love breakfast, so I was excited for a new option. As we pulled up, I saw a giant oil rig painted on their sign and thought, "Only in Bakersfield...." We walked in and weren't quite sure what to do because it was super packed and the welcome sign had been partially erased. We stood around for about 5 minutes and then overheard someone talking about signing in, so we went and signed in. It was an odd thing to me that they weren't utilizing the outdoor patio for service on such a busy, beautiful day! We stood uncomfortably and we're told we were next. Then eventually, someone called for another group. THEN we were called and told to sit at any empty booth, but actually jk sit over at that booth. OK. Got it. The decor is really cool. I love a good theme that fully follows through. We sat down and I noticed they had the Irish creamer I like, so I ordered coffee (it is a coffee shop after all). My parents got soda that came in huge Mason jars! Very cool. We ordered food and the waitress walked away without hearing my whole order, so we flagged her down pretty easily and completed my order. It was pretty busy so I think she was just a little overwhelmed. I got the chocolate chip pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. My parents both got egg dishes. We all enjoyed our meals. The breakdown: I LOVED the bacon. Possibly the best bacon in town. My coffee was possibly the worst coffee I've ever had, and I have tried lots of coffee! It tasted like mud to me, so I didn't even finish it. The eggs were excellent! The pancakes were so so....good batter, crappy chocolate chip flavor choice. All in all it was a good experience, but not 10/10 for me.

If you love obscenely large portions of feel good food, this is the place for you! This local gem has been around for as long as I can remember and has become a sort of breakfast institution in Rosedale. The decor pays homage to the local petroleum industry and a good portion of the clientele still works on the patch. I usually get the Hawaiian Freedom Toast (name changed when Franco-American relations were strained). It's four massive wedges of King's Hawaiian goodness covered in powdered sugar. There is a meal option available, but I've never had the appetite to attempt that. If you're ever hungry and in Rosedale, be sure to check this place out.

Pros 1. Good customer service 2. Cool nostalgic decor 3. Tasty eggs benedict Cons 1. Pork chili Verde omelette is no bueno (the bf made a mistake ordering this) 2. Can't think of anything else really Summation: Good breakfast spot. I'll be back.

I am a huge fan of this place. I ordered a meat scramble and the eggs were great, the meats were great too. As always, the biscuits and gravy were also fantastic. Very flavorful gravy and freshly made biscuits. I bumped it down to 4 stars because they were very slow to get us started. A couple behind us was seated about 5 minutes after us and were taken care of before us. That frustrates me when that happens, as the waitress passed us at least 3 times before talking to the table before us first.

We had a craving for omelets so we went to Pappy's and ordered a all meat omelet and added spinach and some mushrooms. It's as good a omelet as I have ever had. They let us substitute cottage cheese for potatoes since we were low carbing. The omelet had big chunks of different meats and just the right amount of cheese. It was moist and not dry. The iced tea came in a big jars and was delicious. We had great service and Pappy's is cute like a old time diner. We definitely will be back to try the burgers. Thanks Pappy's for a great breakfast.

Went again today and tried something different. Got the cowboy benedict. Wow.. I really enjoyed that combination. I think I found a new favorite dish!

I dearly love Pappy's coffee shop for breakfast. I love the hashbrowns and that gigantic slab of ham that is to die for. I wish there wasn't always so long of a wait, but when you've got a great restaurant like that it's worth waiting for that kind of food. The servers are always friendly and efficient and they really hustle because that place is always super busy. There's nothing fancy here - they have walls full of old oil field signs and all kinds of ancient things, and even dead critter heads on the walls. It's very masculine - it looks like someplace your grandpa went to every day for breakfast before work and everyone knew his name.

This has become my favorite breakfast place in Bakersfield. The biscuits and gravy, there are no words. Soooo good. If you are a breakfast lover, make Pappy's your new home

I am learning more about living in Bakersfield - people love big breakfasts and going out for large family breakfast is a weekend ritual. Joined a friend's family, party of 11, to this interesting coffee shop. The exterior is strange with security cage-like façade and when you walk in the place looks like an oil rigger's who loves to hunt shrine - with eclectic stuff on the wall from Moose heads to miniature oil rigs. Having said that, the breakfast was huge and well prepared. Crispy Hash browns, huge omelettes stuffed with goodies, strong coffee and fluffy biscuit served with sausage gravy. No calorie counting here! Come hungry and leave in a food coma! Great way to start Sunday mornings!

Love coming to Pappy's for breakfast. Can't go wrong with their large portions, great prices, and the "trucker hunter" feel of the interior. Love getting a side order of blueberry chocolate chip pancakes! Yum. Their omelets are huge, could never finish a plate on my own, same with their breakfast burrito!! And for those not feeling breakfast, they have a great selection of sandwiches and burgers.

I just wanted to take the time to send the owners and the staff a message. My Son was home for the Holiday and as a Tradition he eats at your place every day when he is home. Your staff recognized he was in the service not sure how they knew....but he wears two bracelets on his wrist he lost two of his friends in Afghanistan last year in Nov 2014 when he came home he has yet to take them off. So as a mother that just had breakfast at your location with her son that just came home from Afghanistan. I would like to Thank you for the great service and the kind discount that you gave us on our check. And Thank you for recognizing my Son today. Ronda Crist

Ten thirty on a Friday morn and the place was jammed. Line went out the door on to the patio. Because I was alone, I sat at the counter. I had corned beef hash and eggs with hash browns and a side of biscuit and gravy. The biscuit was as big as a softball and if the gravy was not made in house I was fooled. Service and food were both above average in spite of every table full. Thought the price was a little high but then my eggs arrived. The meal was reasonable for all the food you get. I highly recpmmend Pappy's.

Good food nice people, big portions. Get the French toast, an omelette, or nearly anything on the menu. You can get pancakes as a side order on most egg dishes. They Also serve grits. If you go, be prepared to wait, there is always a line. They also have animal heads on the walls. Just be prepared for that as well.

One of my favorite breakfast places in Bakersfield. Cool decor with an at home feel. I had the Pappy's omelette this morning with grits. The food was cooked well, portions are gaudy and the waitress did not let our coffee cups get empty. I've never had a bad meal at this place.

  • A J G.

The waitress not very friendly, I attempted to order their meatloaf from their menu. I was informed they didnt serve it any longer. So I ordered their open face hot beef sandwich, I was not impressed at all, the potato salad was not very good. I won't be back, the place is very dated and appears dirty. You can tell the waiter staff are not a happy crew.

The lukewarm reviews here don't do this place justice. Sure, the cleanliness of the walls and ceiling are somewhat suspect, but if you can get past that aspect, this place is Bakersfield gold. It has an incredibly unique feel and, out of every place I've ever eaten at in town, Pappy's serves as the most representative symbol of Bakersfield. The pictures on the wall, the mounted animals, the countless oil references, and even the table settings make this place a special treat. The portions are huge, the food is good, the ambiance is suited well enough for a nice conversation. Don't get me wrong, this place was hopping when I went with a friend at 9:30 on a Saturday. However, we didn't feel rushed to eat or pay. The waitress even gave us drinks to go and the host who checked us out made nice chit-chat. Truly, it's the little things that made this place special to me. The food isn't any better than Spencer's, Knotty Pine, or Sugar Mill and the wait time is probably longer than those, but my enjoyment of Pappy's was much greater than any of those. Don't brush Pappy's off because it's got a mediocre rating; decide for yourself.

I lived a half mile from Pappys for a dozen years so I have eaten here many times. The food is good, portions way to big for my appetite, and this is not food that boxes up well for later. So there is one star. And the people have always been nice, service was always decent, not outstanding but certainly not bad. But thats all the stars they get. My personal preference is that real animal remains are not good decorations, and the place is so filled with dust from said animals and other clutter on the walls, I wonder how they pass an inspection. Anyhow if you want HUGE portions of good food, served in a dusty old coffee shop, you would probably like this place. No doubt I will find myself eating here again, but I won't be paying.

Food is solid. I had the duck bacon and eggs. Poached eggs were a bit under done. My gf had chicken fried steak and b&g. Both tasty. Coffee was good with about 4,000,000 creamers to choose from on our table. Customer service was great and I love the feel of the place. Classic divey coffee shop with lots of the owner's personal memorabilia around. Come here if you want good food at a reasonable price, served by very, very nice people in a great environment. Support local business!

I have been going here for awhile they used to be great but awhile back before I got a yelp account I went here and got pigs in a blanket. I get my plate and they look great until I unwrap my pig and the other side of my pancake was burnt. I didn't say anything because that plate took forever to get I didn't want to wait again but since then I have not returned. Again this was probably 6 months ago but it kept me from coming because I mean come on breakfast is like so simple do t mess it up.

Technically I'd give it a 3 1/2 stars Great little homestyle breakfast lunch joint. The food is good and the portions are large for the price. Nothing new just the classics. Smaller low key venue. Don't let the scary "metal enclosure" which surround the restaurant scare you away. Lol. once inside you can see it's more of a just quirky kinda place. Small side notes on what we got: I really enjoyed that you could get a biscuit and gravy as a side, which did not disappoint Chicken fried steak was huge, can easily split Steak with the steak and eggs, unlike many breakfast joints, was not cooked to death

Great diner food and HUGE portions. This place is a typical diner with great oil/Bakersfield memorabilia all over. I think this place would fit perfectly on that Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

This used to be our go to place for our weekend breakfast until the last time we went. Although when you walk into Pappy's as told in the lengthy review posted it is quaintly decorated with dusty old oilfield signs and dead animals. On our last visit the coffee tasted like it was made with dish water and used coffee grounds, completely undrinkable. Really this is suppose to be a coffee shop so I asked if I could have a fresh cup? She looked at me as though I was crazy. But reluctantly she gave me a fresh cup and it was no different. So I was convinced that this was what their coffee was like. Then we got our food. First my husbands bacon, eggs and potatoes. Bacon was crisp, eggs were not over medium they were over hard and potatoes were greasy. Then the most disappointing was the biscuits and gravy. It was definitely a mix, no doubt in my mind. Kind of a hint of sweet with bits of fake sausage type meat in it and our biscuits were hard as hockey pucks!! Even though the food was not good the service was for how busy the place was. Bummer we used to come here regularly and now I drive by and long for the days of good Pappy's food.

Food is delicious, deco is very native and prices are good. However the quality of the staff is declining quicker than Obama's approval rating. They hear but they don't listen. They are known to give the eye rolls and grunts. If you can deal with service one step above the golden arches, this is your place for good food. Somewhat of a shame too, this place used to be the spot in Rosedale for breakfast.

  • Chantel D.

Was just ok . . . . our food was not that great. Hash browns tasted rather stale and eggs were not cooked right. Place is rather dumpy with a ton of dust everywhere. I was surprised at all the rave reviews because my bf and I were NOT impressed. If you want a great breakfast, try 24th St. Cafe, or Knotty Pine. We won't be back. Place smells a bit odd also.

This place is a crap hole. The food is absolutely horrible. The manager is a miserable mess and should be fired. Save your money and go to Spencers. There are way more healthier choices than this grease pit in Rosedale.

Oh man. AWESOME!!! Seriously...better than Knotty Pine, better than Milt's, better than all the others. I am not sure why i waited so long to come and try it! My husband and I came here today with a Groupon offer in hand. The restaurant is located in a rather obscure parking lot, and upon first glance -- it looked like it was closed (metal vertical bars across the front of the store). Inside the restaurant, the walls were decorated with Bakersfield signage and heads of hunting animals (deer, buffalo, etc.). hmm.... We ordered the following: (1) steak & eggs (it came with hash brown & toast). My husband's steak came out really nice - he ordered medium. Dipped it in some A1 sauce! The eggs were over-easy and tasted like any other eggs, and hash brown was OK. 3 stars. (2) cowboy benedict (it came w/ fried okra) -- this was 2 sausage patties + 2 over-hard eggs over 2 biscuits. It was lathered with globs of white gravy....completely drenched the entire meal. I was underwhelmed, and only ate my 2 eggs + 1 patty, picked at the biscuits. I wish the fried okra was not fried..probably would have tasted better. 2 stars. Overall, it wasn't the most pleasant breakfast experience we've had and probably wouldn't have checked out this place if it weren't for the Groupon.

Pappy's is a local hole in the wall place that is charming to go to. With their large portions at reasonable prices, it's no wonder that a line forms outside of the place. The interior is what you can call "trucker diner chic." The walls are adorned with various photos and taxidermy that sometimes wear their own hats. The people that work there are warm and friendly that constantly refill your drink. It can get crowded, but it's a good place to go to if you want american diner food. One of my personal favorite dishes is their corn beef hash, with their giant breakfast burrito in a close second!

Road Trip! Day #1 Mr B and I are heading about as far north as we can. Yup. Alaska. But we have a few stops along the way. Gotta stop at Pappy's. Groupon. Breakfast time. Well, actually, my tummy was already saying lunch. Skip the ho-hum eggs. First impression - GPS guides us to this ugly, tired, dusty strip mall, with no redeeming qualities. The dust even has dust. Oh, this is going to be bad, thinks I. Well, we go in anyway. Dusty animal heads mounted on the walls beside decades of old faded pictures of oil wells and Bakersfield artifacts. The tables and chairs come direct from Used Office Furniture Depot. Oh, no. Really bad. Bathroom, only one. The seat better be put down. Not happy. Nice young girl seats us. Menu looks decent. Yelpers said "good food". Wendy, keep an open mind! Order: One BLT and one mushroom burger. Potato salad and fresh fruit for sides. Food appears quickly. The hamburger has a little American flag poked into the bun. Am I supposed to stand and salute first? Holy sweet Jesus. My BLT is beautiful. The bacon, absolutely tops. Thick, cooked to perfection, smoky, and generous. Mr. B's burger, half a pound of the juiciest, tastiest meat. The potato salad side - served in a soup bowl. Really. Enough for a family of 4. Full of chopped HB egg, olives, green bell pepper, onion, and just the right amount of mayo. Granny - I know you are hiding in the back. This is way too good. And the fruit cup. Why, oh why, do I have to come all the way to Bakersfield to get the sweetest most perfect melon bites. And the people are so nice. A huge bunch of high school football players. Not a single swear word. Am I deaf or in Salt Lake City? Nope. I'm done passing judgment. I'm here for the grub. Total Bill: $3.94 not including the $7 that I paid for the Groupon. Pappy, you make me happy! Groupon, you make me slap happy.

It wasn't busy and they brought my food out cold. I had the cowboy Benedict and I could tell my meal had been sitting out for a while bc the gravy had gotten a film over top. Really long wait, dusty decor, booth seats broken so I was sitting in a hole, one bathroom that's always occupied (I went to check three times). I wouldn't go back.

I love this place. Up until today I had only gone for breakfast and loved it. However I took my coworkers there for lunch and it was fantastic. I had the freedom dip (they don't use the word French). The meet was really thin and cooked well it had a good flavor without the dipping sauce. We had fried okra which was cooked just right. The onion rings were very crispy. It was wonderful

what else is there to say....if you want breakfast in Bakersfield...this is the place to go. the food is amazing, and i have tried quite a few different things. The portions are ridiculously large, and i love the mason jars they use for glasses. it must be the oakie in me. service is always great, which is impressive since they are almost always packed to the gills. if you are coming in on a weekend morning, expect to wait to get seated. We never take this as a negative, the food is just that good. Even with a huge crowd outside waiting to get in, they seem to move people through fairly quickly. It's always worth the wait anyways.

First time at Pappy's and enjoyed the food. I had a sandwich and the most delicious french fries, and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of food offered. I was the only person in for service, so it was a bit strange, but the place isn't so big that it was uncomfortable to be eating alone. The staff"s daughter, age 6 -8 was a bit of a bother, like she was in training to be a waitress. Cute, but not appropriate for so much customer contact. I decided to take half of my sandwich home to peace and quiet to finish it. Again, the french fries were delicious, the sandwich excellent, but the child was intrusive. I will go back one more time when school vacation is over and child is in school. I think it is a good place to eat from everything else that I saw. I used a daily deal coupon and there was no problem with using it. The waitress was very pleasant (not the mother of the child-waitress).

If Bakersfield does anything right, it's breakfast food. Pappy's takes me back to my high school days where we would ditch first period (Go Patriots!) and get some breakfast. I love the gravy here, it's spicy. Although, now I have to watch my waistline (I know longer have a metabolism of a 16 yr old) I definitely love to come here on cheat days (which is like every other day!). The pancakes are wonderful, the breakfast burritos are delicious, and the biscuits and gravy are my personal favorite in town. Definitely two thumbs way the fuck up! OH! And the service is great too, although I let that slide;)

Walking into Pappy's is like walking into an eclectic little piece of Bakersfield history. You're greeted, before you even walk in the door, by a taxidermied wolf (coyote?) standing atop an old piano looking as if he is howling out a friendly "Come on in!" Stepping through the door, you're surrounding by pictures, signs, and artifacts showcasing Bakersfield's oilfield origins mixed in with a variety taxidermied animals and political paraphernalia (pictures of John Wayne and Ronald Reagan, among others). We've never had to wait too long to get served (once we're seated) but it is certainly easy to while away the time looking at pictures of oil derricks and such. The waitresses are friendly, too, smiling and joking with us whenever we come. This is a good old-fashioned greasy spoon diner that - surprisingly - isn't too greasy! And, best of all, their portions are HUGE. I mean - "I can't finish them" huge. And those who know me know I can put away a LOT of food. I discovered this place when I called a friend who is always in the know about local food places an asked him where I could find the best breakfast burritos in town. He said it was ABSOLUTELY Pappy's. Once I got there and saw the massive size of their breakfast burritos, I though he'd misunderstood me to ask who had the BIGGEST breakfast burritos. Their burritos are huge and tasty. I usually get the one that said it has jalapenos in it, and I've never been disappointed. I have also ordered their 4 egg omelets, a couple of their scrambles, and the biscuits and gray. You won't even believe the size of their ham steaks!! I'm a fan of all of them. I haven't tried the freedom toast yet, which appears to be made out a big slabs of sweet Hawaiian bread, but the picture in the menu sure looks good! When I'm feeling REALLY SINFUL, I go all out and get the chicken fried steak smothered in gravy with eggs on the side. The guilt and diet angst I experience is completely worth it. (This is one restaurant where I KNOW I don't want to see the calories posted on the menu). My brother and I stopped in for lunch the other day to try out their driller burger (which comes on thick slabs of toasted sourdough bread) and their Philly cheese steak, and I am happy to report they were both winners. My brother reported that the driller burger is best eaten with sauce - he chose ketchup, I probably would have chosen ranch dressing (which showed up in a little cup next to my french fries without my having to ask for it - score). The Philly cheese steak was moist and juicy and the roll it was encased in felt soft and fresh! The cheese was already melted to gooey perfection when my dish arrived. I had french fries on the side and my brother ordered the onion rings, which showed up looking HUGE with the breading/batter fried to a crispy golden crunchiness. The fries and rings were not the least bit droopy, and one could tell they came almost straight from the fryer to the table with no wait time to begin to get soggy or limp. I love this place. It's not a fancy gourmet experience, but if you're looking for old fashioned diner comfort food done well with a splash of local fun, this is what you've been dreaming about. Did I mention their menu says they serve breakfast all day long? Bonus for those of us who (occasionally) like to sleep well past the time when everyone else serves breakfast and you just can't bring yourself to go to a cookie cutter national chain.

Best chicken fried steak in town. I don't care about big. I care about good and Pappy's hands down is the best. Added bonus all the staff take care of you very well. Classic Bakersfield awesome eatery!!

Lemme start by saying, this isn't a place I would have normally considered eating at. I just happened to be sitting in the parking lot waiting for Rosedale music to open and decided I wanted some breakfast. That being said if you're going to be a breakfast joint at least know how to cook scrambled eggs. My scrambled eggs were so far over cooked and brown the texture was closer to chewing gum them eggs. Their menu assumes everyone wants to eat like a horse. Could definitely use some lighter options. All I can say is I would never consider returning here under any circumstances so that's a one star in my book. Gross... Oh definitely not a fan of the dead animal decor either

My wife and I went there for breakfast today at 9:30 on a Wednesday morning. We were seated by a young lady who took our drink order and then disappeared. We sat at our table for fifteen minutes watching others be seated and even getting their food! We've been before, but this place is definitely becoming sub par. Finally after 15 minutes of being treated like we were "invisible," we went to the Knotty Pine (where we should've been all along and had wonderful service and breakfast!) Someone actually laughed at us when we walked out! I've never been so humiliated! This used to be a decent place for breakfast, but not anymore! Way too many other places nearby to go to that are way better! Sorry Pappy's but after going to your establishment for 5 years, I will NEVER step into your joke of a restaurant anymore! Breakfast used to be good, but lunch was alway bad!

Mediocre food there but I will never go back there because of the filth and dust an inch thick on everything. My allergies were kicked off for two days after going there.

Classic "Quantity over Quality" kind of your typical Bako-Hype place. Food is very average and you are going to wait in most cases to get a seat. Food Breakdown 1-10 scale: Chicken fried steak - 4.5 should be chicken fried jerky Gravy - 6 so so... Nothing special Bacon - 6 super salty good??? Can that many people be wrong...... I guess so!

Why haven't I discovered this local gem sooner?!??? Yes, it is kind of a hole in a wall, run down, decorated by some off his rocker redneck....BUT THAT IS THE CHARM. Our server (always the same) is amazing and if my face wasn't so busy stuffing it's face I would try to remember her name. Anyways, this is a must for every local and for every local to bring their non-locals.

Pappy's at breakfast time reminds me of my grandmother's house. Food is good, service is great, relaxed and unhurried, can't ask for anything else.

If I could pick a restaurant that i have experienced (so far) that encompasses the spirit of Bakersfield, it would be Pappy's. The walls are decorated with "petro-memorabilia" and mounted animals. The crowd is your typical down-home country folk and the food portions are ENORMOUS. The chicken fried steak hangs off the plate and the gravy is superb. The steak itself could be a bit more flavorful. The skillet dishes are well cooked and the biscuits are excellent. The price is reasonable, you can expect about $10-12 per person (with coffee).

Always guaranteed at least two meals from the servings. Doesn't hurt that the food is delicious also.

It's better than Denny's, but it's still not the best in town. This place has decent food, for a decent price, but it's still just a meh for me, I don't know why, maybe the fact I can't get comfortable while I'm there.

Pappy's just plain rocks! Great food, great prices, clean, the waitresses are very attentive - I love it here. I love that the portions are big, and when I am getting ready to leave, they give me a great big giant to go cup for my iced tea. Much love to Pappy's.

  • Michael L.

I received my food within four minutes of ordering, this is not fast food. I expect my food to take time to cook and arrive to my somewhat warm. It wasn't. While gigantic, my chicken fried steak was cold, chewy and flavorless. Avoid Pappy's at all cost. Make the drive and go to 24th St. Cafe instead. You'll thank me.

Good food. Good service. We had a short wait and a little bit of wait for the food to come. My husband loves the decorating. He got a huge burrito, I got the eggs benedict. I wouldn't get it again. It was just ok. I love the biscuits and gravy. I'll be back.

This is the kind of restaurant my grandpa would have loved. The portions are ginormous, the breakfasts are good, all-around country fare. It's Bakersfield so I'm happy to overlook the semi-lame "Freedom Fries" and "Freedom Toast" attempts at patriotism because the staff is super friendly and unlike The Rocket Shop Cafe (I recently had my first visit there for breakfast) they actually appear to appreciate your patronage and that you chose to spend your hard earned money with them. I love the Chicken Fried Steak but the Eggs Benedict are really good too. The biscuits and gravy are done well and the chocolate chip pancakes are a huge hit with my family. They are always busy on the weekends but we've never had to wait too long and, as previously mentioned, even on a super busy Saturday morning the staff is always smiling and the service is top notch.

  • Reecker M.

The food and service were off the charts great. In fact, I have to say that it was one of my favorite breakfast eateries. The only problem here is not the restaurant's fault but the backward hillbillies that frequent it. As we are finishing up breakfast some clown thought it his mission to come tell me that my girlfriends child was bothering him. He was clearly across the room and the noise level of the restaurant is loud to begin with, so how this baboon with dog hearing could have been annoyed by a three year watching cartoons on a cell phone is beyond me. But again, don't let some asshat local ruin what is in essence a wonderful and delicious breakfast spot.

You wouldn't guess it from the outside, but Pappy's has and amazing eclectic feel and is buzzing with warmth and activity. I had the chili verde breakfast burrito -great sauce-, with rich whole wheat pancakes. The food was amazing, and the portions are large enough for 2-3 meals. The service was reasonably quick, although there was an initial 15 minute wait (understandable for the quality of the food). The coffee was also delicious! Definitely will go back.

My in-laws are from Bakersfield so we came up to spend time and celebrate my wife's birthday. Someone suggested pappy's coffee shop for a good breakfast. The place was packed but the food was not too great, my corn beef and hash was soupy. I just could not get past how dirty and beat up the place was and our waitress was not happy to be there either. You won't be seeing me at Pappy's again!

A typical greasy spoon. Service was good. Portions are large. My veggie omelette was greasy the gravy lacked flavor. I won't go out of my way to eat here again.

Fantastic breakfast spot in Bakersfield. When we moved here, we kept hearing so much about 24th St. Cafe. Though they are good, they have nothing on Pappy's in my opinion. Pappys has a fantastic breakfast. It's all about "down home", nothing fancy or anything in this place. Walk in and it's like you took a step back in time the the best sense of the phrase. Food is delicious, service is fast and friendly. The only thing I'd warn you about is that you'd better go HUNGRY...the portions in this place is amazing. We love treating ourselves to breakfast here when we can.

Service sucks but the food is great. You are supposed to sign in at the register, but no one tells you that, the sign just says wait to be seated. Plus, the sign up isn't anywhere near the entrance. The servers spend the whole time behind the counter gossiping and flirting with guys at the counter instead if cleaning up tables, refilling glasses, and tending to customers. If you don't mind waiting for a while, its one of the best breakfasts you'll ever have.

  • T J.

Really great food every time, however sometimes the service is terrible. Some waitresses are great at their jobs where others come off as rude and like they don't want to be there. Tried to place a to go today and was hung up on twice. Customer service people!

This place is average. It could really be a great breakfast place/hole in the wall greasy diner, but it's not...It's just average. The staff could use a refresher course in good service and the food is just not anything special. I wish this place was better, I just love cool hole in the wall greasy diners. I would have to say Cope's Knotty Pine is the place to go when passing through Bakersfield...skip Pappy's

I'm sorry, but having moved to Bako from LA, this place has been put pretty high up on a pedestal with very little to merit it. I had the chicken fried steak breakfast platter with a short stack on the side, only the pancakes were anything worth mentioning. And the service was horrible... I called the order in @ 8:15 and was put on hold for 8 mins+, I was told the food would be ready in 15 minutes... needless to say I got there @ 8:30 but didn't leave with my food until 9:15 and I am not exaggerating one bit with the times, all the while, the 3 female servers would take frequent breaks to stop n chat w each other. The restaurant was @ 75 % capacity, so I don't know what their excuse was.

If your looking for portion size this is the place! I like to order the Ham Steak and Eggs! Ham Steak on one plate and eggs and hash browns on the other with biscuits and gravy! Yum Yum!! Prices are comparable to other mom and pop restaurants and great atmosphere. I haven't ordered anything here I wasn't happy with. Try it out, you'll love it!

OMG - This is the BREAKFAST Place! I had a great egg white omelet with tomatoes & onions with a HUGE biscuit and tasty white country gravy. I would have gone 5 starts except for all the scary stuffed animal heads hanging on the wall. Never seen "Oil Well" art before, but understand as the crowd has a large proportion of oil workers. Like the blonde behind the cash register too.

  • Kathy S.

This is a truly shabby looking hole-in-the-wall place, very popular with the locals so prepare to wait for seating. I agree with other reviewers that the place really needs a clean-up and remodel--no need to go fancy, but hose-off that relic junk, paint and replace the carpet, booths and tables, that's all! Otherwise the food is down-home good with giant portions and decent service.

We stopped to have breakfast at Pappy's when we road tripped through Bakersfield. Their country food is delicious. I ordered a breakfast burrito with a side of biscuit and gravy. The biscuits and gravy were excellent and really hit the spot for my inner country girl. My partner order the chicken fried steak, which was also excellent. Portions are huge, so prepared to be stuffed!

Favorite breakfast spot in town. If you do not like hole in the walls, you won't like Pappy's. The place is always crowded in the morning, but the staff is always super friendly. The portions are quite large and always leave you with leftovers to take home.

Funky family owned restaurant in the middle of a strip mall. Doesn't look very inviting from the outside . . . looks like a jail from the front since they have bars around the outdoor seating area. Had good reviews from Yelp, so we ventured in. The owner used to be in the oil business (as is evident by all the oil memorabilia on the walls.) My guess is he also is or was a hunter based on all the taxidermy (heads of various animals, birds, etc.) Super friendly staff. For a quick bite to eat on a road trip, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the food. I ordered a chef salad. The greens were not iceberg (yay!) but fresh romaine. The turkey and ham tasted fresh and not too salty. It was a generous serving for a reasonable price. My "senior" parents stuffed themselves with items from the senior menu. Half of a BLT had 4 thick slices of bacon! All the burgers were a huge 8 oz! Good value. An eclectic place to stop.

This place was recommended to me and my guy by a long time Bako local, and since we just moved here, decided to give it a try. Disclaimer: I'm from the south, and am very picky about biscuits and gravy. Nothin special about this place- typical breakfast offerings on the menu. I got a skillet type dish with fried potatoes and meats- the "hot links" were gross and tasted like hot dogs, ruined the whole thing, and it was swimming in grease- yuck. The biscuits were ok, but the gravy was very bland and they were both lukewarm at best. I just doused everything with tabasco and ate what I could. Maybe my dining experience was ruined by the fact that I was sitting in a booth that had a hole in the bottom and a spring poking me in my back? This place needs a remodel in a bad way- they should at least provide seating, yes? They get one star for having fried okra with breakfast which was edible.

  • Bob C.

A rustic lil' place in not the most appealing strip mall in Bakersfield. Here you'll find yourself surrounded by stuffed and mounted animals like a zebra, a stag, & a couple of bisons. You'll also find a nice and friendly waiting staff. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype. I shoulda guessed when I saw the "A" rating at the front. What self-respectful dinerish-joint would have anything higher than a "B-" I ask? I ordered my typical corned beef and hash with 2 eggs. Both were solid breakfasty foods cooked to order. My only disappointment was with side of waffle (neither light nor flavorful).

Pappy's serves up some decent food, although slightly salty for my taste. Here's the problem... Everywhere you look in the dining area, things are dusty, dirty and in general disrepair. With a newly renovated J&M's just a stone's throw away, Pappy's should take a long look at their program. Today, my breakfast buddy and I sat in a booth next to a brick wall. There was hole in the vinyl of the seat that was so deep I was forced to sit all the way against the wall to avoid it. I didn't even want to put my purse there because the tape holding it together was filthy. Upon looking at the table, there was a half inch wide strip of greasy residue next to the wall where the tables have not been deep cleaned. There is a musty smell in the air that is coyly masked by the smell of country style home cooking coming from the kitchen, but it's still there. I will only say about the many, many artifacts hanging on the wall (because I know that's their "thing") that you must clean them every once in a while. Thank goodness I didn't have to stare at the dust crusted buffalo this visit...

This place is awesome. It's homey and has great breakfast food. The portions are huge and there is a good variety on the menu. My favorite is a cheese and tomato omelette with hash browns. Their omelettes are amazing. Every time I eat one I say it's the best omelette I've ever had.
