I have eaten here about 5 or six times and every meal was delicious. This is one of the better Italian places in town. They are a bit pricey, but the quality is excellent and the service good too. It can get pretty crowded so call ahead to see how long their wait time is. Atmosphere is good for a date, but not for large groups.

You can never go wrong with the sauteed mushrooms, minestrone soup or dinner salad. The mushrooms are sauteed and then broiled (I think) for a short time. Minestrone soup is flavorful and dinner salad is like a mini antipasto salad AWESOME! Luis and family definitely make you feel like family too. You will always have a great experience coming here.

Have never really had a bad meal here. I really like the meat ravioli's with meat sauce. The anti pasta salads that come with the meals are good. The warm french bread they offer before your meal is good. Service has always been good. Prices are reasonable.

the pizza margherita is divine although they put about three times as much garlic as they should. The trunk of my car (where the pizza sat for like an hour) smelled like garlic for days as did our kitchen during the two days the pizza lived in the fridge. Still, it was amazing and my gf, brother and I were craving another one just 2 days later. The gnocchi wasnt great, although I'm not a big fan of gnocchi in the first place. The spaghetti was pretty good with a tasty sauce as were the cheese ravioli. bottom line: try the pizza margherita.

The food is OK, the service was definitely horrible. The worst I've experienced yet. The waitress slammed about every dish on our table and gave us attitude when requesting separate checks. Didn't do any good to complaint to the owner since she sided with the waitress by stating it would be fine, while they talk about our table and pointed at us while we were looking. NO RESPECT FOR CUSTOMER.

My coworkers brought me here a few times for lunch and I love it! The portion is very filling and will hold you for a long time. The pasta is nothing special, but it does remind you a bit of a homecooked meal. Definitely get the sauteed mushrooms! I don't know what they put in it but it's awesome! Apparently they kick everyone out of the kitchen when they make this so it's like a super secret recipe. My recommendation: - Sauteed mushrooms.

Thank you yelpers! Came here for the first time thanks to the great reviews on yelp and took everyone's advice and got....... a CALZONE! HOLY MOLY! It was as big as my thigh and probably weighed as much as a large newborn baby. Stuffed with olives, mushrooms, TONS of cheese, salami, ham, and other goodies it was probably the best meal I have ever had. SERIOUSLY. I was stuffed. The crust was amazing as well, more like a pot pie crust than a pizza dough, but OH SO GOOD. I would definitely come back if I were in Bakersfield again.

This is by far my favorite Italian restaurant. I currently live in Newport Beach but I grew up in Bakersfield. My family has made it a tradition to go to Josephs every single XMAS Eve night. I always get the Chicken Parmesan which is OUTSTANDING. They give you huge portions that will for sure keep your belly satisfied. I recommend you get the doggy bones for an appetizer. The service is great. All of the servers are very friendly and know us by a first name basis. Very homey feel to it. The atmosphere is perfect too. It is a small and comfortable setting that gives it that mom and pop feel.

LOOOVVVVEEE Joseph's!!!! I have been dining here for 12 years. I always, and I mean always, order the chicken Alfredo. When they see me they don't even ask what I want, they already know. Lol. We moved to Texas and now live in New Orleans and I have yet to find an Italian Restaurant that compares. Louie (the owner) remembers us every time, even though a few years can go by in between visits. He is always so sweet and cordial. Did I mention I LOVE this place?

I'm guessing no one stops in Bakersfield for food! I love Italian food but wow...full cloves of garlic in seafood linguini and CANNED...YES...CANNED mushrooms in the calzone! Over cooked rubbery calamari, butter sauce that's 60% butter, shrimp that sat it hot broth for WAY too long, Cod patties that were way fishy and service that matched...tossed down my salad that came with my rank dinner...she took off the nasty seafood linguini but charged me for the salad that came with my entree...thanks but no thanks! McDonald's next time.

I keep hoping for a good meal in Bakersfield while visiting here while my father is in the hospital. I know I can rely on Basque food, but when it's just me, that seems a waste. I am not a fast food person. So I tried Joseph's for lunch. The ambiance is very old school B-town; small, uncomfortable chairs and older waitresses who call people honey. In retrospect, I should have maybe tried a pizza. I ordered the spinach manicotti. The portion was large and the pasta was likely house made. The pasta sheets were overcooked and very soft. The filling was very bland and worst of all, the marinara sauce was just tasteless. There was very little salt or spice - it was as if they just heated tomato puree. Luckily it wasn't very expensive. I will keep looking for that good meal...

Joseph's is a classic. Best Italian in Bakersfield and sweet hole in the wall atmosphere. Also it's family owned. Growing up here, going to Joseph's with my family was always a treat. Especially recommend the calzones, get creative and make one to order. Everything else is also awesome. Good prices and sweet atmosphere, forget the rest and go more authentic. Fisho.

I believe that this is the best Italian restaurant in the Bake. GREAT sauce, great service, and the owner/chef often comes out front to shake your hand. Very personable and that doesn't even take into consideration the flavor of the food. Awesome sauce (my personal fav being the red sauce with mushrooms). The calzone is enough for two and then add their sauce and it is to die for.

This has got to be one of my favorite restaurants of all time. This is a family owned business that is tucked away on the side parking lot of the old Montgomery Wards/Latino shopping center, off of Golden State and F street. The staff is always friendly and seems to remember the regulars. Nearly every lunch and dinner time, this place gets packed, at least everytime I've been there. They have the best red sauce I've ever had. The pizza's are great, the cheese bread is awesome. I love their simple dinner salads and the blue cheese dressing (which is probably out of a jar?) is sooo good. May favorite menu item however is their calzone, which is HUGE. I always order too much, just so I can take some home with me. :) I also like to order the red sauce on the side so I can pour on as much as I want. Many people refer to this place as the rival of Rosa's Italian, and usually people like one or the other more, it's a strange Bakersfield thing. I think both places are great, but would choose Joseph's everytime. You can't go wrong here.

Very good experience. The food was great, especially the sauteed mushrooms. Also the house redwine was very good.

By far my favorite restaurant in town. Have been a josephs customer since age 4- and nothing has changed since then. Still same great food and service! My favorites are josephs special pizza and spinach raviolis! Scrumptious.

  • Mindy S.

I love the food and service... Salad and bread are very fresh and the portion of food is huge so I always share the food with my husband. I haven't tried the pizza yet..... but seems like many people really enjoy pizza. I'll go back and try the pizza next time for sure. love this restaurant.

I had helped my buddy out on a project or two, so he said he owed me dinner at the very least and drove me out F street to this wonder, we had the Chicken Alfredo pizza, a medium thinking "Were not that hungry" but the pizza was huge - and tasty to boot. Staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere was nice as well, definitely want to go back and sample some more!

  • Mara M.

Joseph's has great classic Italian food for such good prices it borders on ridiculous. It works as take out just as well. Two people can easily eat there for $10 and have leftovers. I highly recommend the sautéed mushrooms and garlic cheese bread.

  • Stephanie J.

I have been here many times. Love just getting the plan spaghetti and meatballs (Meatballs and Ravioli are to die for). Everything tastes so authentic and fresh.

  • Jordan R.

I have been a customer with my family for over 15 years. The food is great, I would highly recommend the calzones and spinich raviolies with red and white sauce. The only thing I have to complain about are the servers. They act like they hate their job and talk more than give service. The owners are sweet people but their servers need etiquette help.

Best Ravioli In town. Sauce is fresh and taste. Pizza is fantastic to. Crispy crust, fresh ingredients. Favorite place to eat

This was a pleasant surprise. I would've never known there was a restaurant like this in what looked like an abandoned shopping center (adjacent to what used to be the old Montgomery Ward). The food was superb. I had the Tutto Mare -- seriously LOADED with Seafood. Tortellini was so-so. The service is not that great. Good prices...decor sucks. be prepared to wait.

I use to come in for lunch once a week and office lunches, BUT NEVER again. I was bringing out of town guest in for dinner. Called ahead for party of 7. Arrived to the rudest lady ever. Asked for 2 tables to be put together as this has been done countless times for office lunch. She slapped menus on table, mumbled under her breath "Bitch". When I asked her did you just throw those menus, she waked away. Told usual waitress sorry I would be leaving and that the "hag" that sat us was the rudest old witch. She then came and said she was the owner although a little charming italian woman tried to apologize for the other's haggish behavior we left. Don't worry! Will never come again! Will never recommend! Off to family competition Sorrella's.

Solid food in an old school Italian food atmosphere. You'd have to know it is here but once you do, you'll come back.

This place came recommended so I had to give it a shot. One word comes to mind: DISAPPOINTMENT. The food quality and table service was atrocious. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana. It was soggy, it was covered with far too much cheese. The tomato sauce had no imagination. I make better sauce. My girlfriend ordered their cheese ravioli plate. How bad could it be right? Well for one thing they used the same bland tomato sauce. The quality of the ravioli was typical of the frozen variety you find in the grocery store. Not fresh, possibly freezer burned. I mentioned the service (if you want to call it that) in the beginning of this review. Our server had the manners of a biker-bar bartender. She was was rude, lazy, and not at all accommodating. I should of took the hint when I called the restaurant (using that term loosely) asking for their hours. Phone manners were equal to the table service. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those super needy customers, but I do expect some level of service. Ive had better service at Taco Bell. In short, don't waste your time, or your hard earned money...

This place got really good reviews so we thought we would try it out. It looks like a dump from the outside, but with the good reviews we thought we would give it a try. I had New York steak and pasta, and my boyfriend had the special lobster ravioli. My steak was supposed to be medium rare and it was just about well done. Not to mention 3/4 of it was fat. The lobster ravioli was not good either it was floating in butter, and there were only about 5 raviolis on the plate... For $17.95?? My boyfriend ended up eating the pasta that came with my steak which was ok, and I had the 3 bites of my steak that weren't fat. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a descent meal, or if you want to impress a date. It may be ok for pizza, but not actual food.

I frequently eat at Joseph's and was very displeased with my last meal. When I called to place my pickup order the lady I spoke with was very rude. I ordered cheese ravioli and asked the lady to double check my order for no meat because I'm a vegetarian, when I got home I notice I was given beef ravioli, it was already to late to have them fix my order. So I called the following day to aware them of the problem. The not so gentlemen was very rude to me as I told him what was wrong with my order, he didn't seem interested in good costumer service. Then he proceeded to ask me why I calling and told be to have a nice life and hung up in me. It's safe to say I will never order from there again. I would give them zero stars if I could

My super amazing woman and kids had dinner here along with me. It was a very important night for me because it was her birthday. Along with all the hustle and bustle I was going to propose to her as well this is why I'm reviewing for last nights occasion. It was well packed! I thought I would not get a chance to do what I was supposed to do. It was going to be 1 hr 1/2 for seating. We were about to leave when they showed us to our table, which was a stroke of luck. My kids had never eaten here. They loved the food they couldn't believe the portions. My lady and I ordered the Linguini Napolitan with Shrimp. This dish is so inviting you cannot heed scarfing it down. The veggies were done right as always, the shrimp was perfectly cooked. The broth was burning on my tongue so good!!! As so agrees my woman too!!! Every bite was a juicy explosion of colorful flavor straight from Italia! Order the steak medium rare, its to live for. Josephs was full of fellow patrons that night. Well, so I had a cake done by Sweet Surrender. I had them put "Will you Marry me?" Our waiter came out with her cake, she read it tears start and she looks at me with confusion. So I get up, get down on one knee show here the engagement ring and ask for her hand in marriage. She crys and says "YES" with all the patrons and workers looking over. Was very intense. It was a great time for all of us. All in all Josephs workers did a great job helping me, Thank you!!! The atmosphere was just perfect. To all who were there thank you as well for your blessings!!! Bomb calzones. I always have gotten food to go but listening to the family that runs the place banter is hilarious. Best Italian food in Bakersfield for sure!

Best in Class. No Reservations. I have searched (in vain til now) for a reasonably priced restaurant in greater Bakersfield that wasn't a chain, and also had very good to great food. Yelp bailed me out, so I would like to pay it forward. OK, there just might be a line to get in; relax. They will probably sell you a glass a wine while you wait. I came in with two hungry but manageable kids who were able to hold out for the line, then also while we sat at our booth for the food. It's a comfortable place with cozy booths and a laidback but not sleepy attitude. We all agreed it was worth the wait. I liked the Chicken cacciatore, which was on the spicy side. (The server said it was very spicy, but to me, it was just right.) Whatever the kids ate, also hit the spot. I can't remember -- it's been awhile. I could have sworn I had written a review. Better late than never. This place will stay in your mind, perhaps like it did mine. It's a great place to stop if you're on your way to, say, Kern River. Perfect place to stop in fact.

By far the best Calzones I've ever had. Don't let the location steer you from this restaurant. The food is absolutely great. I love the smallness of the this place. I have been here several times in the past two years.

  • Ryan L.

I ordered their lobster ravioli in butter sauce which was on special. The portion was not aligned with the "special" price as it was lacking in size. Also, it was swimming in butter sauce..way too much for the few pieces of ravioli on the plate. My girlfriend ordered a steak medium-rare. It came tough as nails with nothing rare about it. The whole plate moved on the table every time she tried to cut it. Not a fan of this place. Won't return. Also, I didn't appreciate the lady's comment when I told them about our meal- "Well, one in a hundred" (ain't bad)- really? So I don't matter as a paying customer? Got it. On second thought- it's one star now.

Great service, great food It was my first time coming here and for sure NOT my last. Def coming back soon. The place is NOT fancy at all.... But the food is the important part and it was better than what i expected.. LOVE it Yes i give it 5 ***** (stars)

This small and quaint family owned restaurant is my absolute favorite Italian place in Bakersfield. I come here often with family and you cannot compare the the quality or price of the dishes here at Joseph's to any other Italian place in Bakersfield. Joseph's has odd hours so make sure to check when its opened before coming here.

    (5)
  • McKenzie S.

Joseph's is a typical hole in the wall Italian restaurant. The ambiance is a little old and run down, and certain aspects of the small place look a little dingy. They could use a little makeover. But don't let any of this change your mind about eating here. The food here is solid. It's very consistent, and I have never had a bad meal or bad service. The calzone's are huge and could easily solve the hunger of a small village. My only complaint is the lack of fresh ingredients. Their salads are usually pretty limp and boring. But, really...who comes for a salad?

So I'm back following the mother road, Hwy 99 up and down the Central Valley, passing through the very towns and outposts that made California the breadbasket to the world. And, all that driving gives me lots of time to think. I think about things like all the fields in bloom.....all the fields that are lying fallow thanks to congress cutting off the water to the farmers.....all the trucks on 99.....all the traffic........and that jerk in front of me in the fast lane going 45 and talking on the cell phone. Hey Mrs Magoo, put the damn phone down and get the hell out of the way. I hate idiot drivers like that. In fact, now that I think about it, there's a lot of things that I hate. With apologies to Mel Brooks, I hate: Bald headed arrogent jerks with small mans complex, Rubber neckers, Looky-loos, small dogs that look like rats with an underbite and creepy bug eyes, red headed step children, er, I mean not (necessarily) my red headed step child, teenagers who barricade themselves in their room and do nothing but eat peanut butter and play with their joystick.....from their PS 2 (not that I know anyone like that), scrawny psycho cats, rustlers, cutthroats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, conmen, indian agents, mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwackers, horn swagglers, horse thieves, train robbers, bank robbers, ass kickers, shit kickers, and methodists! Oh, and the french. I HATE the french. Ahhh, that feels better...almost. What I really hate is faux italian restaurants. You know the places, they put a few noodles on the plate and call themselves an italian restaurant. No, the Olive Garden is NOT an italian restaurant. What makes a good italian restaurants? You came to the right place. Real italian restaurants have a dark, shadowy feel; dark wood paneling; plenty of red vinyl; placemats with famous landmarks of Italy; and mobsters. Okay, so where is there a good restaurant? Bakersfield. I know, right? Who wouda thunk? So I roll into Josephs. Great place. You can't even find it until you're there. And, apparently you can just park anyplace in the parking lot. The lines are mere suggestions. I go inside. Checklist: Dark interior, wood paneling from the 60's, red vinyl, placemats, and I'm there so the mobster part is covered. My dinner? Spaghetti with marinara, and minestrone. The sauce had chunks of garlic the size of fish heads. Great wait staff, good flavorful sauce without a lot of crap in it. And very affordable. Kelly in accounting? She'll approve. Next time: pizza. I give it four meatballs. Check it out.

Simply: Came here for lunch with co-workers. Arrived just before the lunch crowd and was seated promptly. Had the spinach ravioli and spaghetti half and half. Spinach ravioli was definitely worth trying and would definitely order again (after I try the other ravioli options). Service was friendly and left feeling full. Picky: was not able to join me. sad day

The only Good Italian in Bakersfield. Small, hole in the wall type place with great food. Good soup, good sauce, good doggy bones. With places like The Olive Garden you may as well open a jar of Prego.

  • Cora R.

I came here because I've heard such great things about this place. I was pretty disappointed as was my bf. I must say the service was very friendly, like your auntie kind of friendly. On the other hand, the food was so bleh.... Servers started off with a big portion of a less than average bread. It tastes like french bread from food maxx and wasnt even warm. So the butter was just solid. Yuck. We ordered the Chicken Alfredo and it was probably the worst alfredo I've ever had. The sauce was so bland. Just tasted like cream. The chicken was chunky, but dry. It was pretty much the most boring chicken alfredo ever. Chicken. Alfredo sauce. Noodles. We also ordered the margherita pizza. The server said it was the best pizza they had, and margherita pizza is my favorite kind of pizza, but this was just tasted wrong. The garlic on the pizza was overpowering every ingredient and I LOVE GARLIC. But, I couldn't taste the basil or tomatoes. It was so overwhelming, we couldn't finish it. Overall, we were disappointed. I don't know. I guess I've been spoiled with AMAZING Italian food. Maybe we'll give this place another try, but I doubt it.

    (2)
  • Kenneth L.

Had chicken alfredo and it was gross. The salad was as well. The Alfredo sauce was watery with no flavor and at the bottom of my salad bowl there as about a quarter inch of water as well.. Was not impressed at all...

  • Brian T.

The food here is awesome, but the service sucks. Guy working the registrar was rude. There was a wait and his comment was, "there's a lot of people here right now, so you're gonna have to just wait." No sh#%! We stayed because we were hungry, and like I said, food was awesome, just the service sucks. You would think a small business owner would want to treat potential long term customers with a little bit more tact and respect. This will be our last time here.

  • Lucero C.

A group of co-workers and I were in the area doing a presentation and found this place after a yelp search, it's kind of hidden. We ordered a lot of different food, veggie and tomato pizza (good), chicken broccoli calzone (the small size was HUGE but it was too salty for my taste), pasta (they were happy to cater to my co-workers taste who basically created his own sauce/pasta combo), salmon (a co-worker that has been to Italy would not eat any of the traditional italian food) and other stuff. Prices are reasonable. The beverage menu is pretty slim unless you want wine. Otherwise cute atmosphere, nice servers, definitely seems mom and pop but it is in Bakersfield so not sure I'll be returning.

  • D N.

This place is good. The wait on Friday-Saturday is never more than 5 minutes. The food always tastes fresh. The prices are decent. Instead of waiting 45 minutes on a Friday to get in at a chain restaurant come here to get quality food. Beer and wine only

Tasty old school Italian style eatery behind a strip mall in Bako. I really enjoyed lunch here. Had the house salad w/ homemade Italian dressing topped with antipasti. Shared a medium calzone with a friend. It was giant and tasty!

Can't properly rate this place more like 3.5 leaning more towards 4 stars :/ I had clam linguini in a red sauce & it was GOOOD. BUT my partner had the half&half plat part spaghetti part ravioli & it was soo nasty! Worst spaghetti i ever ate :/ & its plain. No meat sauce just regular sauce & u can't taste the beef in the ravioli. the price my clam pasta hit me for 17$ w/tax .the pizzas were starttng around 15$ . The soup needed flava! Too much water. Big amount of bread AND the food was out super fast. Staff needs some help tho! Lol socially awkward. the guy that set our table wouldn't say a word. It was AWKWARD. But the rest of the staff was super nice .......sooo now u see why im confused for rating them properly. My dish was great!! The other not so much... But ur a Italian place ur sketty should be good right? Ill be going back tho- so thats good :/

Ok. Joseph's is ok. But could they maybe update the look of the restaurant so as not to look so rundown? Give it some fresh paint, maybe a new roof and how about this..... Attractive outdoor seating!! The inside is cool in an old school kind of way, but it to could use an update. Nothing too drastic, just not so old and worn.

My wife got the trio. Loved it. I got the lasagna...kind of hard. I've never had lasagna with that much meat. It was full on layers of ground meat. Haven't really decided if I like it. Kind of leaning towards..not. Needed more sauce. It was scalding hot though. Not sure if that's cause they nuked it

Love the Margareta Pizza. It' not traditional so don't even get your hopes up. What it is is a blended red sauce full of garlic and basil that will keep the vampires away for days. I really enjoy the Chicken Caesar too, probably the best I have had in town.

  • Macey G.

Probably my favorite italian of Bako. It's great for lunch, there's prompt service, and they provide a nice refreshing twist on the appetizer salad. I really like the atmosphere. it's quieter, and never packed when I go. Love the staff as well.

I don't think so. Joseph's gave me one of the WORST pizzas I've ever had in my life. I've never encountered a pizza before where the crust split in half it was so hard. But thankfully I did here because it was the only way I was going to be able to eat it without needed to visit a dentist after. The crust was so damn hard it hurt my teeth! I was pretty excited to come here because we had received the recommendation from a 400 lb Brooklyn man so I figured he knew pizza well and we could finally score a good pizza place in Bakersfield. WRONG. Just because someone's overweight, doesn't mean they know good food. The parking situation is also sketchy. Waited in my car and made sure to lock the doors while holding my taser. Bad part of town. I will never go here again.

My husband and I had our first date at Joseph's over 12 years ago. If you ever saw the original "Parent Trap" with Haley Mills - then you'll know what I mean when I say I instantly knew I had found my "Martinelli's" Joseph's is small, dimly lit and has an incredibly romantic atmosphere. Clearly, they have some sort of magic working there because we're happily married and still together. ;) We've since visited Joseph's for romantic date nights and even anniversaries. Possibly TMI - but there is nothing better than the morning after an evening at Joseph's spent crawling back into bed and sharing leftover manicotti. Not too many places you can say that about. Joseph's is hands down the best Italian food in town. The pasta is fresh, the sauces are amazing, the salads are really good and no place in town can touch the pizza. As previously mentioned, the manicotti has always been my favorite and after ten years it is just as good as the first time I tried it. I'm sorry Tim P. (reviewer below) had a poor experience with Joseph's. I can honestly say we probably visit or have take out from Joseph's at least 2 - 3 times a month on average (over the course of 10+ years) and have never had anything remotely close to what Tim P. described. Tim, I really encourage you to give them another shot, it's worth it. Our kids love the food and my son typically requests take out from Joseph's every year for his birthday. Our family even went to dinner there after my son graduated from high school. The service is impeccable! Take out is awesome! We live in Rosedale and will drive all the way to F Street to pick up food from Joseph's. They really take their time packaging it up, I've never had anything leak and that even includes ordering Linguine with Clam Sauce (one of my husband's favorites), salads (the dressing is so good!), and their cheesy garlic breadsticks with sauces. In terms of cost, the prices are shocking - in that they are so reasonable. We've easily fed nearly 15 people for under $100 with take out from Joseph's. It's not uncommon for us to place an order on Halloween because it's so much easier to have delicious Italian food (red sauce for Halloween! Perfect!!!) ready to go while the kids trip in and out trick-or-treating. We've even taken to ordering their family trays ahead of time for Christmas Eve because it frees us up to focus on cooking for Christmas Day - and all of that is mainly due to the incredibly reasonable prices, quality food, and wonderful service.

I have been a patron of Joseph's for 21 years now . It's definitely one of the only no frills places in town where you WILL be treated as if you are part of the family. A rare gem. Oh yeah.... And their food is consistently scrumptious.

Everyone I know raves about this restaurant. Being that I am a huge italian fan, I decided to give it a try. Apparently, they are known for their calzones, so I ordered a calzone with all the fixings and their house salad. We were served a basket of bread while waiting for our order and it was quite good. Next, we received our salad, which utilized their specialty house dressing--the dressing was tangy and quite good. Lastly, we received the calzone which was very large (large enough to feed two). However, the quality was poor--I felt like I was eating a little bit of pizza topping mixed with prego stuffed between two pieces of cardboard. Also, they charge you an additional fee for splitting an entree, but this is clearly designated on the menu. I do not plan on eating here again.

Joseph's is my favorite place EVER for pizza and calzones. Its going to take a miracle to bump them from that spot in my heart (and stomach). Its a tiiiiny little place in the middle of the ghetto area of downtown Bakersfield. I have since moved from Bakes, so I don't make it down to Joseph's too often, but I'm going to doubt that the staff has changed too much. I used to come at least twice a month, and I got a calzone just about every single time. The calzones are GIGANTIC. A medium could feed a small family, no joke. I'm getting hungry just thinking about them... They pack it with whatever it is you desire and give you a huge bowl of delicious marinara for dunking. Even though you really have to eat it with a fork, its that messy. I think I need to take a trip up to Bakersfield this weekend. I need some Joseph's!

We enjoyed it very much. The wait was not as long as they said it was going to be.

I had the pleasure of dining at Joseph's last night, quite by accident. What a happy accident! This place is a small joint with super friendly staff and quick service. The food is delicious, I'd love to return and try some of the specialties. My companion and I each had a pasta dish. The sauces tasted fresh and pasta cooked nice and al dente. Definitely worth a return visit.

It's literally a little hole in the wall, but the food is awesome. Best for great take out food.

We ate here on 2 May,2010--had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. Local prom-goers of some sort were eating there, fully dressed-smart kids.. Was recommended by lady at La Quinta Inn--she was the best so was the restaurant. Sauteed mushrooms and house red wine, full carafe-killer. Had the linguine wid da clam sauce--really good. Friends had great food as well. Ya gootta try their tiramisu. This is a little hole in the mall, hard to find, well worth the search.

I would say joesphs deserves 4.5 stars. Really good calzone. I don't even know if anyone else in town makes it. I don't care. Joseph's special calzone is delicious and huge and make sure to ask for more marinara to dunk each bite in. Hmmmm. The hubby loves clam pizza from here. I do not care for it-the oilyness is just overwhelming for me.

Good wood fired pizza and calzones. The calzones were huge! The waiter should have warned that even the "mini" calzone is almost enough for two people. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable.

This is a great place for quiet romantic dinners and special gatherings. Although the building is smal in size, this place is huge on food portions. Reasonably priced; you definitely get your money's worth. The food is absolutely delicious from this family owned and operated establishment and I have yet to find a dish that I did not enjoy. I would recommend starting out with their deliciously seasoned sautéed mushroom. They are to die for. You will feel right at home with their friendly and professional service. The owners are always on site and will engage in their customers to ensure a pleasurable experience. The service is quick, accurate and the food is always fresh and you will surely go home happy and full with some food to spare.

Mamma Mia! When the reviews said the calzones are large, believe it! The reviews are some of the most entertaining I've read! We enjoyed our meal, service was good, friendly and family-like atmosphere. Definitely a dive! We're adding it to our 'spot' list. It seemed like the negative reviewers may have been expecting Olive Garden.....

This is definitely a hole in the wall. Tight, dark spaces, but delicious, from scratch Italian food in portions that are larger than life. The Calzones are massive, but delicious. My favorite item is the fettuccine Alfredo, it doesn't keep well if you don't finish (sauce will separate naturally), but it is delicious. Service is nothing to write home about but they are pretty attentive and definitely friendly. Be prepared to wait if you are going on a Friday/Saturday night!.

Five stars again! We love Joseph's Calzone. Katie Lou made our birthday dinner special!

Going to Joseph's is kind of like going to your friends crummy apartment; except when you get there you find out your friend just spent the whole day cooking you the greatest and best Italian food. Some might call it quaint but the atmosphere at Joseph's is a drag. The green and red table covers were reminiscent of my 4th grade Christmas Cub Scout dinner at the local troop moms house. The wood grain paneling was like getting into uncle Fred's cigarette smoke infested 1972 Cadillac Eldorado all over again. I give it a 4 out of 5 because of the service and the food. It was a weeknight so they weren't too busy. My server Melissa was speedy and friendly. I ordered mushroom ravioli with pesto sauce and was not disappointed.

This is my favorite Italian spot for excellent food! I come here at least once a week it's that good. The calzones are massive (a mini size could feed two people!) and the pasta and sauces are fresh. I've never had a bad dish here and will continue to be back every week for my Italian fix! YUM!

Hidden gem! Home-style Italian food - calzones are huge, awesome crust filled with fresh ingredients, pizza is very classic Italian and the seafood pasta dishes on point - pasta al dente, lots of garlic, light olive oil - just right! Location a little off the path but prices are reasonable and the food reminds me of small eateries in the suburbs of Italy! Love it!

I am always up for trying new places. Especially local joints that are advertised strictly by word of mouth. I finally tried this place for the first time with my friends and I was not disappointed. I tried the pepperoni pizza and all I can say is: outstanding. My wife tried the "mini" calzone (which is a misnomer by the way as it was huge) and the house Italian dressing reminded me of a favorite restaurant of mine back home in Oxnard. The atmosphere of the restaurant had a Godfather feeling to it without someone getting shot at their table of course. The prices are very reasonable and even cheaper than the chain restaurants. I will definitely go back again. If you're in the area give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Great old school atmosphere, friendly people, great service and great food. I had the Fettuccine with shrimp. It was the best I've ever eaten. Not only was the Alfredo sauce wonderful, the shrimp was cooked to perfection. I can't wait to go back, it was a great experience.

I prefer Joseph's over Olive Garden. The minestrone soup is wonderful and I love the rigatoni plate. Very good and great portion for the price. Service is good and it's a small family owned business, which I love. But might be a problem if you have a big party or family. My hubby loves the calzone he gets the smallest one, which is probably more a normal size. He says its great!

I'm in a good mood, so generosity throws an extra star in this review. It was a bit warmer than I like to be in a restaurant. ..remember we are in bakersfield. The women working seem rather pushy. I got the "you're done eating time to go" look. When inquiring several times about meat in a dish I would assume my waitress would think far enough to ensure that all aspects of my dish are meat free. What I was able to eat was ok. It wasn't the greatest ever but definitely had some flavor to it. I would love to review their customer service but hey, there wasn't any. Not a single employee there seemed to enjoy their job. I can't say that I will be back. Take my advice, just go to Olive Garden they treat you like your business matters and they are way faster.

Simply the best dive Italian restaurant anywhere! The place might look creepy and the staff might be a little off but the food is always spot on!

Absolutely the rudest staff and most disgusting food ever! I had heard many good things about Joseph's and decided to give it a try. I ordered the chicken fettucinni alfredo because I like to stick to a popular dish when trying a new restaurant. It was HORRIBLE! The chicken was CANNED! I had my companion try it just to make sure I wasn't losing it. I never complain in a restaurant if the food is edible. I called the waiter over and explained the problem. He asked if I would like to talk to the owner and I declined. A minute later a man came out of the kitchen and said he was the owner-manager-chef and said that everyone likes the dish he made and offered to bring out a new plate. I told him no, I was just ready to leave. THEN HE HANDED ME MY CHECK AND WALKED AWAY! I drove the block to Rosemary's and have never returned.

You will NOT find a better Margherita Pizza in the Central Valley - PERIOD! It's so good that my husband and I have never ordered anything else. The carnivorous spawnling says order anything with their Alfredo sauce .... The real deal family run, Italian restaurant.

This is a great family run business. I love supporting small businesses like this - their quality only makes it easier. I suggest trying the doggy bones for an appetizer. They were super light and fluffy. As for dinner I has the pizza, it was delicious. My mom had the ravioli and swears by it. If you're looking for a cozy little restaurant I definitely recommend stopping here. Love love Roseanna and Luis.

While in Bakersfield with my Family, we decided on Italian food, so we turned 'Yelp' for help. Joseph's was close by to where we were at the moment. It was a small, 'Hole-in-the-Wall' family owned/run business. Was greeted by Luis who accommodated our group of Nine. While deciding, the mother came by to greet us. We asked about the special and the Tutto Mare (Linguini, Shrimps, Clams, Cod & Calamari) w/ White sauce. Well, I ordered the Tutto Mare as Seafood Pasta is my Favorite. The small cup of Minestrone soup tasted good. There was a good amount of Shrimp, Clams and Calamari on the Pasta. We were treated like long time customers which was great! BTW, the Spumoni ice cream was soo good, I almost did not share. A great time, great food and great owners made for an excellent dinner.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
