Udupi Palace Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

So the joke starts out.. what happens when a vietnamese person, two chinese peopel walk into an indian restaurant... Sorry. I suck at telling jokes. But let me tell you my experiene at Udupi Palace [service] Basically we were the only non Indians in the restaurant and I have to say the service was really stellar. The owner (?) was extremely nice and helped guide us through the menus. [dosas] As I'm sure you will know this place is known for dosas. Umm.. and I have to say if you want a good review of the dosas, its best to read another review because for me, I really don't have a good contextual comparison of a good one vs a bad one. They were crunchy and soft.. and umm.. should it taste like anything else? Actually the last time I had a dosa was in london in the theater district and it was PHENOMONAL. [weird stuff] So.. afterwards the owner (or watier I guess) came by offering us some lollipops. He smiled and left the entire bowl at our table. We were thinking like, "do they only give non Indians the lollipops'? 5 minutes elapsed and this huge bowl of lollipops was at our table. We were looking at each other puzzled and laughing why it was here. We later asked for to go boxes when a lady came by with a bag. We were thinking "what the heck, you want us to take home these lollipops??" and after much confusion it was for the to go boxes. I don't know why but we were very amused with the lollipop situation as when the lollipop bowl was at our table, families would come by and ask if we could have some?!?! So umm.. anyways, this place gets 4 stars for really good service, and good food. Honestly I've had better dosas (unfair comparison with London), but it's pretty solid. I'd come back here for another weird lollipop experience.

Great South Indian food. Has only vegetarian food here, but a great opportunity to try some good South Indian food. Rava Dosa was not that good, but idli, and regular dosa were really good. Service was good.

I remember coming here for the first time at the recommendation of my old college roommate, who's a South Indian. The food here caters mainly to a vegetarian diet, and I remembering ordering a dosa will some type of filling in it. I can't remember exactly, as my friend placed the order for me. I do remember that it was good though. The samosas they were serving for the lunch special were also pretty good...I recommend those as well for appetizers. Service was good, and they take credit cards, which is important. The waiters kept refilling my water glass promptly, which was much appreciated as well. We were fortunate enough to find street parking right outside the restaurant. I would imagine most people would have to park in a residential neighborhood nearby or the parking structure down the street and walk a small distance on most other days/nights. I will surely come back here to satisfy my hankering of South Indian fare.

Oh yum. Actually huge yum! What a wonderful little gem this. A no nonsense but friendly as can be restaurant with fabulous food? Who would think it could exist? ;) Great food too. Our group of four ordered different appetizers and different dosas...all were good and damn tasty. The raita is to die for as is the coconut chutney. Yesiree...coconut chutney! The desserts looked good but I was too full to go there. We will definitely be returning.

There are an overwhelming number of choices for Indian food on Pioneer Blvd. (but then, maybe you already knew that). Whether you are craving Southern or Northern Indian variations, a casual setting or an oppressively formal one, expensive or practically free; if you are craving some scintillating spice and mouth-watering aromatics then you have found yourself in the right area. Indian was on the brain. While on a birthday dinner expedition I found myself with an intimate group foraging the pages of Yelp via smart phone technology, desperately trying to sort out the "worthwhile eateries" against the less favorable. We eventually targeted our selection--Udupi Palace (the new occupant of the old Dutch Bakery). "Dag...Tot ziens!" We were sad to see an old friend go--still referring to the Dutch Bakery that my family oft frequented--but we were mentally prepared to acquaint ourselves with its new incarnation. We entered assuredly and spied Udupi Palace was bustling with patrons. My excitement piqued, as I could smell the fragrant spices wafting ubiquitously and as we took a few paces forward, we watched some interesting meals pass-by. The inside was not ornate but rather simply stated with some orchids placed at each petite slate table. Despite the business bustle we were seated immediately by the exuberantly friendly service and quickly waded into the three-page menu and placed our orders expeditiously, mostly focusing on Northern dishes along with a house specialty. Our selected specialty was worth yelping about since it arrived in grand fashion, inflated to the size of a glistening soccer ball sitting atop of chana (chickpea) curry. The curry was coarse in texture and topped with some raw cilantro, and red onion diced similar to pico de gallo. It was a wonderful blend of flavors especially when using the puffed yogurt bread (batura) as the edible utensil for gloving the curry. All of the dishes, the baigan bharta, bhindi masala and the chana batura were excellent expressions of the cuisine. We also placed an order for three mango lassis and some samosas. The samosas were fair but the lassis were divine, viscous yogurt and some blended mango. The baigan bharta was one of my favorite examples, with pea tendrils adding some extra texture to the mashed eggplant and tomato puree. Although we had initially wanted meat dishes on this outing, we were not disappointed at all that the establishment was vegetarian, such was the variety on offer. Not only are the flavors greater on Pioneer Blvd. than any other incarnation of Indian food in Southern California but also Udupi reinforces the notion that price and quality are not directly proportional because foods of this quality on the Westside--where I reside--are typically double the price and a quarter of the quality, thus it was a shock to see a bill that reaffirmed we were no longer on the Westside--$40--and I had leftovers sufficient for lunch the next day. I look forward to making new memories in this familiar location. A worthwhile journey that awards a fruitful bounty.

There were 3 of us and we ordered Gobi Masala Veggie Korma samosas The food was pretty tasty and there was enough for us all to feel stuffed, plus take some home. I sort of wish we'd just gotten dosas, I've had them here in the past and they were fantastic. Next time I think i'll just recommend that we do that. The chapatis that came with the meal were pretty tasty as well - I actually prefer naan bread but they don't offer that here. The veggies were nice and fresh and the sauces were delicious. I'd actually rate the food here at a solid 3 1/2 stars but took off half a star because the service was just super slow and there wasn't really a reason for it, they had more waiters than customers when we walked into the restaurant. They were very friendly, though.

I and my dad went here for the first time since I was fed up from all the other restaurants in Artesia. I have to say that we are impressed. I would go here again. It was awesome, clean, fresh and super tasty.

Awesome vegetarian fare. Chana bhatura is awesome. Not too healthy though. Masala dose is still the best dosa. I was not impressed with their combo meals, better to order ala carte.

As good as it gets. Really. This is pretty much our go to Indian restaurant and we love it so much, we once went three times in a week. The service is always fantastic and the food? Extraordinary. Out of all the dishes we've sampled, we always have a hankering for the Paper Dosa which is HUGE, crispy, buttery, and oh so delicious. It's probably not kosher but we break off large pieces of it and dip it into the different dishes of the South Indian Thali Platter which comes with Rasam (a lovely lentil soup which they give free refills on), Sambar (another soup with a tomato base that has a kick of sour to it- it sort of reminds me of Thai Tom Yum flavors), Poriyal (a sauceless vegetable dish), Daal (lentils), two other vegetables (this usually rotates and is listed on the specials board next to the front entrance- we've had quite a variety ranging from Chana Masala to Palak Paneer), a special rice (last time it was tomato rice), and Payasam (a sweet soup with vermicelli threads and golden raisins). Another favorite is the Gobi Masala (hot, savory, with chunks of tender cauliflower- this is probably my all-time favorite) and the Palak Paneer (spinach and cheese in a curry sauce- they fry the paneer cheese so its golden and has some texture and is absolutely delicious with the molten green spinach and rich rich sauce). All of the above mentioned dishes (with the exception of the Dosa) come with a side of Basmati Rice, a Chapati (it's like a tortilla I guess), a Papadum (Crispy round of flatbread), pickled mango (this is too bitter and sour for my liking), and Raita (cool cucumber yogurt sauce). Their Mango Lassi is quite good as is the Rose Lassi. The cool creaminess of the drinks provide a welcome relief from the spices of the food. Service is always very friendly and servers are happy to answer questions and make recommendations. They give you Jolly Rancher Lollipops at the end of your meal with the bill so even if you don't order dessert, you'll leave with something sweet.

My family LOVES indian food and this place is our favorite! The food is excellent and the prices are great too. It doesn't matter what I order, because I know whatever it is, it will be good. And it is great that everything is vegetarian. Being Mexican, I am used to spicy food and bland food is a pet peave of mine. At Udupi I am never disappointed. My wife makes excuses to go anywhere near cerritos/pioneer then says "we're so close-we may as well go to udupi". My 3 year old son loves the dosas and the coconut chutney (and the mango lassi's of course-and they were so nice the time he spilled a full one all over the table and floor-they didn't make us feel bad and just cleaned it up and brought him a new one-with a lid) All of the staff is always very friendly. I wish this place were closer so we could go more often.

Our favorite family weekend brunch spot - when we crave South Indian fare. The restaurant is clean, bright and kid-friendly. We almost always get the Udupi Special (plate of idli, medu wada + dosa/uttapam). We have also tried the Chhole Bhatura - that is delicious too. Dosa of choice - Special onion rawa masala dosa. For kids, we get the Kids Cone Dosa with extra butter. The service is quick. The quality of food is consistent. It does get crazy busy on the weekend - for a quieter, less rushed meal - arrive by 11:00am on the weekend for lunch and by 6:00pm for dinner.

After returning from a trip to India we wanted to get together with some friends and tell them the details of the trip. What better place to meet than an Indian restaurant? I looked up Udupi Palace on Yelp and saw that it had some good reviews so we decided to meet here. We ordered a little bit of everything so that our friends would have a chance to sample some different flavors. We ordered Utapam, Dosa, Idli and something else (all of which we had been eating for weeks during our trip). We began eating the food and after a few minutes my girlfriend and I looked at each other and said, "Is it me or is this some of the most bland food we've ever eaten?" Our friends also found the food to be lackluster although my buddy liked the cheese dosa because it came out looking and tasting more like a quesadilla than a dosa. The staff was very friendly and I didn't have any issue with their performance. I felt bad about writing this review but I didn't want any other unsuspecting patrons coming here with high expectations of flavorful Indian food.

This restaurant serves south indian food, lots of "indian pizza", basically dosas and flat bread with vegetables baked in. I had the Thali which is basically a lot of different little containers with different stuff. All very tasty. Service good. Good food. Prices reasonable. Went here twice so far and liked it both times. Will come again! Recommended.

Ahh Udupi. I've been hearing about you since I've moved to L.A., from the countless people I've asked about authentic South Indian food. I've passed by you twice and never said hello. But on the way to the Long Beach airport last week, I gathered my confidence and stepped in, took a seat, and got to know you a little bit. My family is from Karnataka, the state where Udupi lies in India. The food is quite close to my heart, and I take it seriously- When I've had a shitty day, and want nothing more than to forget about my troubles over a hot plate of food, it is my home cuisine that I turn to. I arrived around 5 on a tuesday, when it was slooow... there was a family actually speaking Kannada at an adjacent table, which was so great to hear- aside from them, I was the only one in there. I perused the menu and saw the usual suspects; nothing really new under the sun. But I'm fine with that- as a matter of fact, I was in the mood for untampered South Indian food. I decided on the Mysore Masala Dosa, a classic dish that dosa connoisseurs know all too well. Mysore Masala Dosa is a dosa with chutney spread (typically red) onto the inside, and filled with curried potato (palliya). It was served with a bowl of sambar (spicy veggie stew), and coconut chutney. The presentation, style, and look were pretty standard compared to the dosas I've had in L.A., but the taste of this dosa was far better than any I've had yet. The dough was left the proper time to ferment, and it tasted delicious. There was a good amount of thuppa (ghee, or clarified butter) spread onto the dosa, something that reminds me of home- it gives the dough a soft, slightly salty taste, mmm. It also keeps the dosa from crumbling, so that the palliya (potato curry), can be scooped up easily. I've had too many dosas than were too crispy, and turned into a pile of crumbs when broken apart- amateurs. I have only one gripe- I asked for a small bowl of yogurt, and was charged 2.75 for it- waaay too much $ for a little yogurt. I will admit I didn't ask how much it cost, so I have only myself to blame. But still, yogurt is dirt cheap and is usually not charged for. So definitely go try the Mysore Masala Dosa, it is worth the drive-

Looks sort of rundown from the outside, but it is definitely worth stepping inside. The menu is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious! Everything I tried was great and brought to our table quickly. Great value!

I'm being difficult, but this place really didn't blow my mind. Udupi is CLEAN, and very good service. Though to be a little cheesy, my tastebuds didn't dance the way it does when I have my Indian food in HK (yes, Hong Kong. It's second home to Indians - FYI) The uthapam (indian style pancake) was disappointing... maybe that's not the thing to order ? The dessert.... the dessert... was sorbet served inside a mini pineapple... I have no idea how long that thing's been sitting in their freezer, and I don't want to know... I guess this is a decent indian restaurant for LA.

This was the first time I tried that Indian crepe dish. It was not like anything I've ever had before. The texture and consistency of the crepe was PERFECT and DELICIOUS. The sauces that come with it are really good too! I also had this bready thing that was the size of your fist that wasn't that great. I guess you're supposed to dip it into the sauces but it seemed kind of blah to me. I also had this orange almond dessert that was too sweet. I'm not used to only having vegetarian dishes to choose from, but they seem to have a good selection of menu items. I'd definitely come back to try more things!

Parking -depending on the time of day, parking can be difficult to find near the busy strip malls of Artesia. If you go to Udupi as the grocery stores are closing, you will likely find parking behind the restaurant. Then, you can just enter the backdoor. Service - the service is good. Cleanliness - the bathroom wasn't so clean. Atmosphere - noisy, crowded, too casual for my tastes. Food - this restaurant came highly recommended to me, and thus far I have visited twice. The first time I was unhappy with the food, but I was told I made a mistake by getting north Indian food at a south Indian restaurant. The second time, I made wiser choices and was much more satisfied. I ordered idli and sambar and the udupi special thali, both of which were very good. Value - large portions with decent prices. Can feed many people on a low budget.

I guess every south indian tries to visit any Udipi Palace they run into. I felt this place was a bit pricey, as a little down the road you get better bang for the same buck at Rajdhani. It's sometimes very loud and crowded and sometimes very sad and quiet here. The time it was super crowded, we did receive the customary stale tomato chutney with the dosa. That's saying something, as the more crowded it gets, the fresher the food should be. Interestingly the manager-type person asked me why I did not eat the chutney. I said I can make a better one. Not sure if that is the correct response. He was also condescending as we got seated, asking a lot of questions about where we were from and acting like he knows people in our neighborhood. He also seemed to have airs about the udipi sambhar(this was good). (he should concentrate on tasting everything he serves instead) The food is average but I, on principle, do not go back to restaurants that serve anything that is stale.

For years, this has been and continues to be my favorite Little India place - I recommend it highly and their quality does not disappoint for taste, quantity and price. Every menu item is a food adventure ! Your eyes will marvel at sizes of the Dosas !

Growing up one of the complaints I had is that we would eat Indian food and then go out and eat Indian food. However, South Indian good was always a treat (dosas are hard to make!). A good south indian place is a real gem, and I think that this place is a very good place. Their dosas are very good, their service is very good, and I've been here a number of times and enjoyed eating here. I will probably continue to go back.

I am from bangalore and have eaten South Indian all my life and cook every dish I ordered to a degree of expertise. On our south cal trip, my parents were craving South Indian and we ordered a bunch of dishes which we consider a safe bet. Guess we r too spoiled by the quality of South Indian in Bay Area n Seattle that we found all the food we ordered sub par. -idli- average good sambhar but the dough seemed old - rava dosa- simply perfect - rasa vada- wish I could give minus stars for this dish. The vada was chunky and was weird tasting -thali- half the dishes were inedible, the chapathi, Portiyal n sambhar was not done authentically -avial- tasted more like saagu and nothing like avial. The chapathi was inedible and the rice portion just sat there as avial couldn't b paired with it. Total bill was $47 and everything seemed reasonably priced but for the quality I don't think I care much about the price. The service as other reviews have mentioned is lack lustre. Since the rava dosa was spectacular I am willing to believe the chef had an off day but may not come back here as a first option. If these guys were to compete with dasprakash in Santa Clara or Dakshin in Seattle they would learn a thing or 2 abt flavor n consistency

Ha! I was so hungry after going to the gym and then doing laundry without getting anything to eat in between I was ready to eat whatever I could find nearby. Good thing I remembered Felix S' recommendation for good Indian thali. Parking along Pioneer in Little India is always a challenge. They recently added those parking meters so that helps. It's $1.50/hr, max of 3 hours per car. That's better than me having to circle around looking for a spot in their back lot. Going in I was greeted and directed to a table in the middle of the restaurant. Not wanting to be the first thing people see when they walk in, I asked for a table by the wall. Wasn't really too excited to be seated in the middle when I'm dining on my own. Most of the diners were families and/or business people. I felt so under dressed in my T-shirt and shorts ensemble but you have to remember that I went there right after doing laundry. No time to change. And I really like wearing t-shirts and shorts. Southern Thali (5 stars) - this is a steal for $9.50 esp when it comes with a big cup of rice, a naan, a tostada looking thing (aka papadum - thanks Rohlin), and a whole variety of vegetarian dishes that is more than enough for 2 people. I love the spicy dishes; the ones that looked like they're made with tomato base. So spicy my mouth waters just thinking about it. I also liked the yellow sweet dish they had in the middle. I liked everything; let's put it that way. Samosa (5 stars) - $5 for 2 pieces with 2 dipping sauces. I like to mix the spicy green sauce with the tamarind (sweet) one. One is enough for a person. It's so heavy but so good. Next time I go I'll get their dosa. Now I'm hungry.

Loved It !!! Have been a regular customer of Bhima's before I tried this, it was our 1st time and I am happy that we did .. Had Tamato Onion Chilli Utappam & Paper Masala Dosa and Chiku Shake .. All tasted amazingly awesome .. Definitely going there soon and Will only go to Bhima's now when craving for Ghee Roast is over powering the need of good South India Food !!! Service was quick and Ambiance is fine (better than most of the India restaurant in the area) ..

Udupi is our favorite vegan Indian restaurant. The staff is always friendly and attentitive. All their dosa are off the hook. Our favorite is the butter masala dosa. Pancake style crepe with potatoes inside. Comes with a side of samba soup and chutney dip, soooo delicious! To sample a little bit of a few things. I recommend getting their south Indian thali.mixture of a bunch of currys, soups, and veggies.

Udupi has really grown on me in the last couple years and I would now say it's one of my favorite spots in Artesia. I think the quality of the sambar and chutney has definitely improved and I like the dosa that I order. I either get the Mysore sada dosa or the chili cheese dosa (light cheese) which is very spicy. If you like dosa, you'll probably like Udupi.

Found this place through a suggestion on Google. I gotta say, great restaurant. The foods are reasonably priced, they tastes good, and variety is really nice. I recommend the South Indian Thali and the Spring Dosa. The Thali is basically a little of everything plate and the Dosa is like a quesadilla with potatoes and spices. All in all, I'll probably come back here. It's also not far from Cash and Carry. Really convenient.

It was billed as the best south indian restaurant in the area but to those people, do some additional research, there is better out there. The good: Ambiance is good. Food presentation is OK. Red flags: Zucchini in the Sambhar?! Pongal served with papads and pickle?! Pongal made with BASMATI rice?! You guys call yourself a South Indian restaurant after that? A little part of me died inside the day I saw that Pongal. That alone has kept me away from this restaurant since. I'm not missing out on anything anyway.

I have a very bad experience with this restaurant....I was in artesia to pick up some Indian Groceries and this was very near to the shop.myself with my husband and kid went there and ordered curd vada for myself and sambar vada for my husband...They took nearly 10 mins to take the order itself and finally came and told that there is no curd vada.finally when the dish arrived I was not able to poke it using the knife or fork..It was hard and stale..service was rele bad...We ordered few more dishes which was equally waste of money...hence i would never recommend this place

Two years ago, Indian food was completely foreign to me. I have been familiarizing myself with this type of cuisine during the past year because I appreciate its burst of flavor, healthy vegetarian ingredients, and elegant use of spices. I discovered that Indian cuisine is incredibly diverse, influenced by the numerous regions in the Indian subcontinent and the different religious customs. The different geographic climates give rise to regional specialties prepared with distinct ingredients and cooking techniques. For example, Udupi cuisine, named after a small coastal town in southwest India. is a subset of south Indian cuisine. The Udupi style of cooking is strictly vegetarian. It also bans the use of garlic, onions, and fish in accordance to a religious tradition. The abundance of rainfall in south India states make it easy to grow rice and vegetables. Udupi Palace in Artesia serves south Indian fare that is highly underrepresented in Los Angeles with respect to Punjabi and Mughlai eateries. During the three times I've visited, the restaurant was relatively empty despite its high reputation in Little India. Perhaps it is because people from this generation is not into pure vegetarian food? The only item I've ordered at Udupi is their specialty, the South Indian thali. It is a traditional full course meal that includes two curries (vegetable korma and chana masala), 1 dry curry (poriyal), dal, rasam, sambar, lemon or taramind rice, pickles, chapati, and payasam dessert. The portion is humongous for only $8.95 during lunch. Gloria Z who introduced me to Udupi has written an excellent review thoroughly detailing the individual items. My favorite selections at Udupi are the sambar, lemon rice, and payasam. The sambar is a spicy "one of a kind" mixed vegetable stew. It had a distinct bold and hot flavor from the mixture of ground spices, slightly tangy taste from the tomato, and mildly sweet profile from coconut. The spice level is neither Andhra-fiery nor mild, it was "just right" for someone who prefers "medium" on the Indian scale. I'm also a fan of lemon rice because of its unique citrus-spicy profile and its inclusion of nuts. Very few cuisines have flavored and spiced rice that can be eaten on its own. Payasam is always a treat to end the meal because it is a sweet and creamy dessert. It seems to be flavored with coconut milk and saffron. I like the inclusion of cardamom in the payasam because the seed's spicy and slightly sweet profile matches anything sweet (cold or hot). After sampling most of the south Indian thalis available in Little India, I think Udupi serves the most consistent one in taste and has the best value for lunch. Udupi makes eating vegetarian food easy to consume and changed my impression that vegans eat rabbit food.

The best Indian food I've had in LA. It's far from me but worth the time. The thali plate is amazing. The only I've had here I didn't care for was the channa Marsala I think. But for the most part, everything is great. I've tried many other Indian restaurants in LA, this is the only one I've had with real flavor that pops.

This is our go to place till now when we crave for some south indian food. Though its not great in all aspects, we do like the taste of dosas, chutneys and sambar in here. Check out for filter coffee which is delicious. sambar vada is the one which we order regularly. Avoid South Indian thali as chapatis they provide sometimes lacks taste and very tough. Not bad to your taste buds if you compromise a bit!

Not worth going ... if u still want to go just order the dosas.. they are OK.. don't order the south indian thali. Dal was watery, kheer was like badam milk, soup was horrible, Idli was hard to eat.. just overrated stuff.

ABOUT- Udupi Palace is a South Indian Vegetarian restaurant. The name Udupi comes from a small coastal town in South India. Being a South Indian, not too far from Udupi, I can vouch for the fact that Udupi cuisine is a popular brand name for a good vegetarian meal. This looks like a family owned business, although didn't get to meet any Mangalorean people on their team. DECOR- Its contemporary furniture, looks like a fast food joint. I would give this place 4 on 5 Ambiance- Very casual. This place can fit nearly 45-60 people. I would rate this 4 on 5 Parking- I have heard its hard to find a parking spot- however, we haven't experienced it. There are tons roadside parking and you can park at the back of the restaurant too. FOOD- We went to this place for breakfast and what good is Indian breakfast if you aren't getting Idli !! I love Idli's, its rice steam cakes served with chutney and sambar. I went ahead ordered a plate of Idli, Medhu Vada and my husband got Rava Dosa. I loved my plate of Idli's, a plate has 2 Idli with chutney and sambar. The Idli was so good, it had fermented right, not like the ones that I have tasted in other places; where you take the first bite and you know it's not fermented enough, but still eat it, because its IDLI !!! Medhu Vada was good too, however it just came with the same chutney, bummer! Maybe we should have asked for a different chutney. I didn't realize it until I started to eat Medhu Vada. It was nice and crispy, very filling. My husband wasn't too fond of his Rava Dosa. We also got chai and Madras coffee. We loved our beverage after mild Indian breakfast. I will rate 4 on 5. SERVICE- It was ok. 3 on 5 I will definitely go back and will keep going back for the amazing amazing Idli's and hope to meet someone from their team.

Ordered a rava masala dosa and madras coffee here this evening. While the dosa was crispy and very good, the chutney and sambar were rather meh. A little overpriced and the service was slow, which was odd as it was relatively empty

I have been coming here since I was a kid and not much has changed in the food which is something I appreciate. As a whole the food is good and authentic. The wait is never too long (the times I have been) and the service is decent. The most recent time that I went, it took a long time to get the servers attention and I had to walk up to them to ask for water because they would not come to our table when I tried making eye contact or waving them down. There are also some things that I feel are sometimes unsanitary; however I have no real proof of that. I would definitely come back and enjoy the dining here.

Favorite veggie Indian restaurant hands down!!!! We had no idea such an amazing place existed! But we are so happy we found it! We cannot get enough of this magical place with all their delicious dosas. Our must have every time we come has to be the Channa bhatura with the chick peas. If you have never tried this dish you my friend are truly missing out!! And don't feel discouraged to dig right in but you are forewarned you do have to eat most dishes with your hands. But every dish is very flavorful and really unique because I don't think I have ever tasted anything like this before at most Indian restaurants and I have tried many. If someone were to ask me what restaurant I would recommend from the many I have experienced it would be this one!

Not good. If you are a South Indian and you are trying to find authentic tasting food, avoid this place. I got a Thali and my wife got the special Thali. Neither of us liked a single item. Weird thing is we were both starving and neither of us are very picky. We really wanted to like something and kept saying "not bad " during the meal because we didn't want to be disappointed. In the end we both came to the same conclusion. Awful.

The food was just alright, it could be better but it is what it is. I'm writing this review instead on the quality of the service. I had the unpleasant experience of having the server knock over water on me. I understand this happens, but it is the response from the server that really bothered me. Running away after it spilling water like nothing happened is not an acceptable response. Grabbing some paper towels, apologizing, and mopping up the water so no one slips on the tile floor an acceptable response. I want to reiterate that mistakes happen and I'm not mad about that. Just be human. Treating people like people is the best way to run any business. I would have gladly given two more stars if this hadn't happened.

Excellent food! Dosa is great. Very fresh and great portion sizes. Love this place! The Dosa with onions is flavorful and the soup is spicy, but not too spicy. Very clean restaurant and excellent service. Definitely coming back for More Dosa!

Ate at Udupi Palace again this evening. Food was as always delicious. Tonight the spicing was milder than in the past. The Rasam didn't leave the same smooth burn of peppers as I have experienced in the past. Still it was good. Just a different night different chef? So yes I had the Thali and started with the Mysore Dosa. I must admit their dosa's are addictive I truly think is the Ghee. High marks for the coconut chutney. Honestly, if you are looking for an authentic experience Udupi Palace is an excellent stop.

Really great South Indian veg fare. Idli, uttapam, and vada just like they make in Hyderabad! The lunch specials are good deals and you get a ton of food. I just wish there was upma. The uttapam was particularly good.

Good and nice place to have nice vegetarian food in artesia. Foods are fully cooked with nice south Indian flavor. Nice place to go with a family.

We have been avoiding coming to this place for quite some time as it is pure vegetarian (vegan) but finally this week we bit the bullet and came here for a team lunch and boy was I glad that we selected this place. Being right on Pioneer Blvd we parked on the street but our server told us that there was parking available behind the restaurant so if you park there you can save a couple of bucks :) This restaurant specializes in South Indian dishes so most of us went for the combo meal in which you get to choose between one idli (steamed rice and lentil flour patties) or wada (deep fried donut made of lentil flour) and choose either a paper dosa, paper masala dosa, rava dosa (all the dosas are a crepe made of rice and lentil flour), uttapam (pancake made out of rice and lentil flou) which is served along with sambhar and chutni. I decided to go with the south Indian thali which has rasam, sambhar, poriyal, dall, two vegetables, white rice, chapati (leveled whole wheat bread), papad, pickle, raita and payasam (vermicelli cooked in milk). The server praised their mango lassi to the moon so we all decided to get a mango lassi. Price wise most of the dishes were $8.99 to $10.99 which is pretty reasonable. The service was relatively fast with food coming on to the table in under 10 minutes which is pretty good as the place was almost half full. One of us who ordered the rava masala dosa had to wait a little longer that the others as it takes more time to prepare which is understandable. Server was friendly and attentive so if this continues I'm going to have to change my opinion of service in Little India very soon. The thali that I had was delicious with the chapati cooked to perfection, excellent vegetables, wonderfully seasoned dal, great rice. In a nutsheel I enjoyed every component of the thali and finished most of it which really got me stuffed. As there is payasam in the thali next time I'll skip the mango lassi as it becomes just too much to finish in a single meal. I bummed a bit of paper dosa from my nearest victim and found it to be a bit thick for a paper dosa (it should be the thickness of a sheet of paper that's why it's called paper dosa) and the filling in the dosa was a sad mashed potato mix which was Mehh but still overall the dish worked. The universal feedback that I got from everyone else in the group was that they too were fully satisfied with their meal which was a welcome surprise as it is rare that everyone in the group likes what they order. By the end of my meal I was feeling like a king so I think I get why this place is called Udipi Palace!!!

Well the waiters were pretty rude. He was soo disappointed that we ordered only two items, that he started giving us attitude. No value for money and no quality for the amount charged for each item. No proper food portioning. We had Medu vada which was $7 for 2 small size vada. While aloo paratha was 6 huge pieces for $6, it was soo tasteless and thick, and was waste of space in tummy. Would never come back, there are so many places around which serve food at better prices with so much better service.

Having grown up in Northern India, South Indian food, which is what Udupi specializes in, was always a treat that we went out to experience. Having lived in Los Angeles for 15 years and in NY for 13 prior to that, I have tried a lot of Indian restaurants on both coasts and lets just say I am very thankful to my friend for introducing me to this place 7 years ago. Since then I have been a happy semi-regular making the trek all the way from West LA. Why, you ask? Because this is hands down the best South Indian food I have eaten in SoCal. Over the years I have taken many foodie friends here and they have all been impressed with the food. Every now and then one person might remark that they wish this place served meat too. But South Indian food is notoriously vegetarian. What to do? What to do? EAT! That's what to do! Sure, the ambience is no frills, and it's often crowded and loud, but it's all about the yummy eats here served to you by well-meaning staff [Note: I recently learned that it's best to tip in cash, if you can]. Some of my favorites: *Uttapam - A flat, open faced savory pancake with a great crispy, chewy, soft texture all in one. *Idli - regular or Kanchipuram - steamed spongy rice and lentil that beautifully take on the flavor of whatever chutney or sambar you have with it. *Pongal - a savory, spicy, and ultra comforting rice and lentil porridge like dish. And I have a feeling they put a decent amount of clarified butter in it. Comfort food for sure. *Dosas - try them all over time! They're fun and friendly, and you'll be the one biting. BTW, while I mostly ignore the North Indian dishes they have on their menu, I have tried and really liked the Baigan Bharta - spiced eggplant puree. Oh and don't bother with the desserts here. Go somewhere else down the street. Overall I highly recommend this place if you like Indian Vegetarian food. I can't wait to go back again! I only wish I lived closer so I could get my fill of this place and still have time to try other places and not feel like I'm cheating on my beloved Udupi.

    1. Food is good. 2. They are nice enough. 3. Too long of a wait. Our party of 11 got food at different times, which is a bit irritating. It's was about 30 minutes from first plate that came out to last plate. The last plate happen to be mine. Additionally it was wrong & I had to wait another 10 minutes. Our whole party was done before I got my dish & everyone was waiting for me to finish. They did apologize though. 4. I got the Onion & Chili Uttapam & it was about $10. Rest of the party got various Dosa's & all are about $8-$10 +an automatic 20% gratuity. It's about $2-$3 overpriced to me. 5. Originally I asked for ice with my water. I had to hunt down the waitress to get me refills & remind her for the ice each time. But again, food is decent. The 2 stars are mainly for the service.

Best Masala Dosa in town , I love their coffee but their dosa is little expensive as compared to competitors. Service needs improvement and some professional efforts. Will Come again for dosa.

Our go to place for some dosas! I always have their Mysore dosa. Good stuff! My husband has tried a couple of other things including their masala dosa, their thaali, paneer and dahi vada. I still like their dosas the best and that's all I recommend. They also have lassi.

Having never been to Little India before, I was cajoled by a few of my staff to venture out on a Friday adventure to Artesia for a South Indian food adventure. We landed on Udupi Palace, and ordered off their fairly sizable lunch menu. I decided on the Madras Lunch ($8.95) which gave you an app and a main course. They also have a Thali on the menu, which would be a good alternative to the Dosa / Uttapham fare. First up was the Medu Vada ( yelp.com/biz_photos/udup… ), or a fried lentil donut with sides of Cocunut Cashew Chutney and Sambar. This was a great start to the meal, and the Cocunut Cashew Chutney was probably the best thing I ate the entire meal. 4 stars for this one. For my Dosa I had a Mysore Dosa, which was supposed to have a sauce indigenous to the Mysore region of India, and was supposed to be a very spicy addition to the potato filling. Either they misunderstood my order, or it simply wasn't spicy, because I was unimpressed with this dish. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/udup… ). Although the portion was solid, and I always love the look of a giant triangle eating your plate, the taste profile of this wasn't really any different than the Marsala Dosa that was also ordered ( yelp.com/biz_photos/udup… ). I was a 3 star on these at best. We finished off the meal with some Gulab Jamum, one of my favorite Indian Deserts, and although it was good, they gave me two orders when I asked for one, and each one was 4 dollars, which was way to expensive for a desert! Overall this is a reasonable place for South Indian food, but it didn't really impress me. With so many choices in the area, I'd opt for something else next time. 3 Stars

The thali meals is a must have. Some 7-8 varieties of curries, chapathi, rice and dessert, this is a full course rolled into one. Tastes just like the authentic south Indian meals back in India. Eat with your hands for that authentic experience ;) also a nap afterwards is suggested.

My friend and I frequent the Cerritos mall on a regular basis. Afterward we wanted some Indian food. We saw this place as we were driving and decided to give it a shot. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with this intense smell of incense, which was awesome. The inside is quaint and small, but inviting. We were seated....and then essentially forgotten about for the better part of 20 minutes, perhaps longer. Finally our server appeared and I think his intention was to explain the menu to us, but all he succeeded in doing was making us feel stupid. We basically knew what we were looking at, but he kept repeating himself, and even appeared to get frustrated. He served us room temperature water and then left. We ordered samosas and veggie korma, as spicy as possible. I had to keep telling the guy I wanted it as spicy as possible because he thought it would be too much for me. Please don't tell your customer that the food will be too hot for them. I assure you, it will not be. And it most certainly wasn't. I have a sneaking suspicion he still didn't make it as spicy as I'd wanted it. The flavor was good and I enjoyed it very much, but it could have been more spicy. The samosas were good, too. All-in-all the food was great. But to have a great restaurant means that service must also be great, in this place is lacking in that department. We counted six employees standing around and doing nothing while we waited for someone to serve us, and then the guy who eventually came to help us had an attitude. We'll probably return for the good, but are hoping that the service will be better next time!

This is the best vegetarian Indian food in LA and Orange County. Great South Indian cuisine. The South Indian Thali offers a great selection of items sure to satisfy any discerning palette. The dosas are enriched by the best tasting sambar and coconut dip. My family's go to place for Indian food.

We ended up stepping in to this place, thanks to Rajdhani being closed on Christmas day. We were greeted by an hostess when we walked in and got a table in about 5 mins. Not bad. Pretty good crowd and not sure if its due to the fact that only few restaurants were open that day. Menu was handed over by an indian person who was very nice actually and infact she was the one doing most of the work right from taking orders to cleaning the tables. Kudos to her! She was very customer friendly as well. We ordered Cutlet : Awesome. If i come here again, this would be my standard dish. Mysore Dosa : Sambar and dosa was so so. Channa Batura : Batura with raita was good. Channa sucked. Veg pakoda: Good Service: Indian lady who took the order was great. The non indians who served the food were rude and literally threw the plate on the table. I guess that they are just disgruntled employees who were asked to work on Christmas day? Not sure. But did not expect it to be that way. Will i go there again? Sure but just to eat the cutlet.

The food here is almost unbelievably good. Probably the most delicious vegetariqn meal you could get in the Los Angeles metro for the price. The raita is impeccable, as is, well, everything. When we ate there, the restaurant was crowded and lively, and the waitstaff kindly offered to move us to a quieter corner of the restaurant. Didn't seem necessary -- the food was so good that it was hard not to get in the spirit. English isn't the first language here, but you can certainly get by.

This place is a MUST for me whenever I visit Artesia. I plan my day around either stopping by for lunch or dinner. Yes, it is THAT GOOD. Then I will hit up the grocer, Jay Bharat and Surati Farsan Mart before or after my meal. I've had both the dosas and utthapam and both are so good that I order an extra one to take back to my home 30 miles away. The last time I was here the Indian couple at the table next to us said they came all the way from Oklahoma to have utthapam at this place!! PWND! Service is excellent, the place is clean, and you get to choose from a huge bowl of lollipops when the bill comes. Nice!

  • R G.

While I love the food here, especially the rasam, the service today was horrible. There's a line at the door with no proper waiting area. People come from any direction and cut in line. They don't tell you that you have to go up and find a server to sign up on some informal notepad waiting list. People that came after us were seated first while we politely and stupidly waited our turn in line. We come to this restaurant from 30 miles away because the South Indian food is so good. But with this service, does not seem worth it. Their service is continually degrading over the last 3 times we've come. Only reason this is not a 1 star review is that the food is still good. Plus, the tables are not properly cleaned and the wait staff rush you out. On top of all that, they keep raising prices! Stupid us for driving all the way out here for this.

Under the recommendation of one of my friends, two of my old coworkers and I headed to this place for lunch on a Saturday. We ordered paper masala dosa and it was just okay....the potato mix lacked spiciness. Nevertheless, we finished our meal and handed over my credit card to pay. Here is where things go badly. The waiter comes up to me and tells me my debit card isn't going through and if I had another card. I knew there was nothing wrong with the card because I had checked my bank account earlier and everything was fine. I told them I wanted to see what the problem was and walked over to the POS system. He ran the card and it said "duplicate transaction", which obviously meant, the card had already gone through. He kept saying no it didn't go through because the receipt didn't print. The manager came over and told me the same thing. I called my bank and they confirmed that the charge went through but the manager kept saying no it didn't. He even became aggressive with the credit card guy on the phone. Anyway, I told him I am not paying again and so the manager told me to wait a couple of days and see if the charge goes through. If not, come back and pay the bill. The charge did go through. I guess I am annoyed that he kept insisting it didn't when his POS system clearly states it's a duplicate transaction. While I was at the counter, another customer came with his receipt and told him that he had been charged twice for an item. So basically what I am saying is, check your receipt before you pay and if they insist a charge didn't go through, at least refer to this review to show that another customer had the same issue.

I have been here about 3-4 times this year when the family wants to go out to eat. They do make good food and I like the variety of their menu, however the server is horrible. Every single time we come, the one guy that we ALWAYS seem to get messes up our order (even when the restaurant isnt busy) and seems to tell us how we want our food. It seems he is more important to just put the order in than to listen to how we want it. I'm not saying our order is difficult but we have some dietary restrictions in our family so we have to tell home in detail but he doesn't seem to care. The past week he missed up on 4 orders out of 10. I am very skeptical to go again but if the family want to I will. However after giving him the benefit of the doubt all 3-4 trips, the next time I will be more direct and hopefully he will listen.

Excellent lunch experience! Special Rava Dosa.... not just a pedestrian dosa, but amazing with the coconut chutney. Dining partner #1 had idli-vada combo which was lovely and moist. Dining parter #2 had the Thali platter combo which was lovely and delish. The icing on the cake was the wonderfully attentive servers. Santos from Nepal was friendly, and so happy to help make our dining experience very welcoming...we definitely ate like little princesses!

I first dined here about 4 years ago when my previous favorite restaurant for South Indian thalis started going downhill. This has been the most reliable place for Indian thalis for me, as I prefer South Indian thalis over North Indian/Gujarati/Punjabi thalis. I would say that the South Indian thali is my most ordered item here, so my review will be solely based on the South Indian thali from my two most recent visits. South Indian Thali here includes rasam, sambar, poriyal, daal, two vegetables a day (usually chana masala and koorma, though there was one occasion where I had a mutter paneer instead of the koorma), special rice, white rice, chapatti, papad, pickle, raita and payasam. 9/27/13: CHANA MASALA - While not typically my favorite thali dish (as I am not a fan of chickpeas), the chickpeas had the right firmness, neither underdone nor overdone, and a nice tangy flavor. DAAL - I like my daal a little thicker and more spicy, but it was still nicely flavored, and perfect for those who have a lower tolerance for spices. KOORMA - Potatoes and veggies in a mild and creamy sauce for those with low spice tolerance. PAYASAM - Standard dessert selection for the South Indian thali here. I like that this favorite Indian dessert of mine is standardly made with saffron here, something I haven't come across at other establishments that serve this dessert. It was creamy with a nice sweet and interesting spice profile from green raisins and cardamom. PONGAL - Made with milk, green peas, lentils and mild spices. Not my favorite special rice selection as the rice was too soft for my liking. PORIYAL - One of my favorite "dry veggie" thali offerings, made with chayote, green peas and grated coconut on this visit. It was flavorful but not spicy, and had a very nice texture from the grated coconut and crisp chayote. A few months ago, there was a poriyal made with beets and grated coconut that I liked even better than this one with chayote. RAITA - Another standard item for thalis here, that I don't normally use as I'm lactose intolerant and would rather save my lactose dose for the creamy payasam. This is often eaten with the heavily spiced dishes to relieve the "heat" for those with lower spice tolerance. RASAM - Not generally a big fan of rasam but it's a standard item here. It was medium spicy with strong garlic flavors, and definitely not for those with a strong dislike for garlic. SAMBAR - One of my favorite thali selections. Nice, complex spice profile but wished it contained more veggies "chunks" as the one offered at Pickles (one of few things I felt was superior at Pickles than here). 10/4/13: CHANA MASALA - Same as last visit on 9/27/13. My 9 year old who also had the South Indian thali that night enjoyed it because it was one of the milder offerings. DAAL - This normally mild to medium spicy dish was unusually spicy on this night - with dried red chilis and slivers of fresh ginger root. I really liked it but my 9 year old found it to be too spicy. KOORMA - Same as last visit on 9/27/13. LEMON RICE - I liked this much better than the pongal from my last visit for the special rice selection. It had a nice tangy flavor, rice was relatively firm, and the lentils, coriander seeds and mustard seeds gave this interesting layers of flavors and textures. PAYASAM - Same as last visit on 9/27/13. The only one dish I couldn't convince my 9 year old to share with me. ;-P PORIYAL - Same as last visit on 9/27/13. Another mild dish the 9 year old enjoyed. RAITA - Same as last visit. My 9 year old found this useful with the other spicy selections of the night (dal, sambar, etc.). RASAM - More heavily spiced than last visit. I really liked it but it was much too spicy for my 9 year old. SAMBAR - More heavily spiced than last visit, which I liked, but was again too spicy for my 9 year old. Even though some of the thali items are standard offerings (raita, rasam, sambar, daal, payasam), spices and ingredients used for certain dishes (different vegetable selections for poriyal, different types of special rice, etc.) can vary so be prepared for a different exciting adventure each time you order the thali here.

This restaurant is on a street in Artesia that people fondly call Little India. Though there is no shortage of restaurants on the street, the cuisine at these restaurants is quite similar. The signature item at this restaurant is dosa, which you can get at just about every other place in the area. However, I'd say that the variety and quality of dosa at this restaurant is the best on the street. This place isn't exactly fancy, and definitely not intended for fine dining. This isn't a place to come on a date, or to have a dining "experience". It's about the food. I generally order the vegetarian pakora appetizer, and then choose one of the dosas on their menu. I often get the masala dosa, which is filled with potato and peas. Last night I had the spring dosa, which has those ingredients, plus shredded carrot, cauliflower, and other vegetables. All dosas come with daal and chutney. As with most Indian food, the food in this restaurant tends to be a little spicy. I usually don't leave without feeling the sting in my sinuses and my ears, but it's worth it. The one complaint I have of this place is the same one that I have with just about every Indian restaurant in this neighborhood, which is they hire servers who aren't really trained to be servers. They're usually people straight out of India who are working their first job in the United States. Being a server is about more than just taking orders, serving food, and keeping the water glasses filled. This restaurant, just like others in Little India, would be well-served to hire people who know this art. Overall, this place is great. I've been here many times and will come back many more. If you happen to be in Artesia and want to eat dosa, this is the place.

This place got 2 stars because the food was good, but the service was horrible. Everyone got their food in shifts. My husband was the last to get his food. Everyone else in our party, 11 people, had already finished eating dessert. :-(. The wait staff weren't that friendly either. When they finally brought out my husbands food, it had cilantro all over it. That wasn't on the menu. They had to take it back and we had to wait 10 more minutes. UGH!

We ordered Mix Veg Uttapam which tasted like burnt runner, Mysore Masala dosa which had had nothing but potato, coconut chutney tasted like we were drinking coconut oil and sambhar was full of asafoetida. We were given lollypops at the end which was probably the best part of the meal. Never coming again, wish there was a worse rating than one star.

I have been here a few times and it's great. Twice I have tried the South Indian Thali & a few dosas. As far as the Thali, good portions and a sampler to try different things. I wish however the staff would explain what is in cup. I get an idea after I try but it does help if they can describe what's inside it! The dosas are huge. I would recommend order 1 and share. I would like to come back and try other dishes that the locals order. FYI-save yourself the hassle of street parking. It is best to park inside the metered parking lot.

Came here to try Southern Indian Food. Heads up!! Its a vegetarian place so no meat and don't expect your typical "Chicken Tikka Masala" or "Tandoori Chicken". This is not your Americanized Indian restaurant. It's authentic and real Southern Indian, vegetarian dishes. So be prepared and know what you're getting into !!! Since I basically have no idea what any of the dishes are, i ordered what seemed like a popular dish among the Yelp reviews. I had read on other Yelp reviews that the Special Thali dish is a good one to try so I ordered it. Basically, you have to like Indian spices. Most of their dishes, even the Samosas, had a little bit of spice to it. The Thali dinner was interesting. It came with about 8 different types of sauce or curry-like mini cups that you can pour over the rice or eat with the chapati and/or tortilla-like bread. Although there's a variety of flavored, three of them were more like soups. It was 95% liquid and just spicy... Which I didn't care fore at all. There 3 other kinds that had more texture and milder taste. One had garbanzo beans with a tomato-based soup. Second, broccoli curry with very little liquid and more texture. Third was also tomato-based with various vegetables. There was also a white, yogurt based sauce that I mixed with the spicier soupy sauces to make it more edible. And a sweet orangey sauce with think orange noodles. More like a dessert type dish. Overall, theres a variety of food on the menu and 99% of the customers and employees except us, looked Indian ; so I'm assuming its a decent place and good. P.S. Parking spaces are behind the restaurant. Or find some street parking.

This is not like the Udupi Palace in the Bay Area. The paper dosa was inconsistent. The dahi vada was hard and the chutney was not tasty. The rava dosa was not good, we left more than half of it I the table. The idli was fair. The best item was the mango lassi.

I have spent significant amount of time in Bangalore and Chennai. As a result I have eaten South Indian food half of my life. I visited Udipi on 04/22/2015 with my wife to have lunch. I ordered for a express thali which has sambar, regular rice, roti/chapati, sambar, rasam, raita, special rice and papad(missing another 1/2 items). My wife ordered for a Medhu Vada and Mysore Dosa with sweet lassi. Every item in express thali was cold as ice, chapati was as hard as frisbee(wish I played with that :)). The dosa which my wife ordered was tasteless and too oily. Sweet lassi was the only good thing we had after all it was sweet. I gave my feedback to the manager and told him that the food was not up to mark as far as south Indian cuisine is concerned. Not a great a lunch!

We loved this place! I was worried because it is vegetarian place. The palik paneer was unique, for us. Maybe it's southern versus northern? Try the dosa and the chana batura. We eat at Ashoka, down the street. It's good, too. However this place was really good and was totally different than what we are used too. We did Not miss meat either.

When you truly find a restaurant worthy of high praise, it's well worth the effort of getting there! Authentic Southern Indian Vegetarian Food. We ordered the chili pakora spicy, samosas, chana batura, masala dosa and a mango lassi. Mango lassi-creamy, rich, tasty, sweet, refreshing drink. Chili Pakora-is a jalapeno pepper breaded and deep fried. It was good, but not a favorite. Samosas-similar to a pie crust stuffed with peas and spicy potatoes.Delicious plain or dipped into the two sauces provided. A green chutney sauce and a brown tamarind sauce. Chana Batura-Puffy bread served with chickpea curry. Yummy tasting bread with well seasoned chickpeas. Masala Dosa-thin crispy crepe stuffed with spiced potatoes.Excellent taste with flavors dancing in your mouth! Service was excellent! We were kindly greeted and seated promptly. Parking- aprox. 12-15 spaces behind the restaurant, otherwise street parking. Experience-Like visiting a new place while on vacation and tasting new exotic flavors for the first time!

YOUR FACE! That's how big the dosas are at this Vegetarian Indian place - as big as YOUR FACE. [PIC: yelp.com/biz_photos/TyHL… For about seven bucks, you get that much food with more than its share of flavor and tastiness. The layman's way of describing a Dosa (at least the ones here) is that they're huge tortillas/flatbreads wrapped around a more substantial substance - in my case, potatoes. You tear into the tortilla/flatbread and then toss on a slab of the inner substance and enjoy. In short, they're sizable; delicious; and cheap. I wasn't able to finish one, even with the help of one other person. The pescatarian P.Y.T. had the Eggplant Curry and that too came in a huge portion. She said it was up to snuff, but honestly, I was way too busy with the dosa to check for myself. Recommended, especially for those with more - ahem - specific diets.

Third time there and it was again amazing! The South Indian thali is absolutely delicious. Everything is vegetarian and lots of vegan options!

This is my favorite dosa place in LA. If you aren't familiar with south Indian food, dosas are like thin crepes (crisp on the top), filled with vegetarian fillings like spicy potato and peas, spring onion etc. They are accompanied with sambar (spicy lentil soup with tomatoes and vegetables) and coconut chutney. This place is truly a vegetarian paradise and everything I have tried is super tasty I love the special onion rave masala dosa, butter dosa, mysore masala (it's spicy!). Come early for lunch/dinner on the weekends as it's packed with people. Service is prompt and friendly. I have been here for than 20 times and loved the dosas on all occasions. I have tried many dosas places in LA but nothing beats the dosas here (unless you want to go to India!) Order a la carte and stick to the dosas, you won't be disappointed!

Let me preface this review with this: In August, I spent 2 weeks traveling in India: which means I ate street food, south/north Indian, food in Indian homes, ect. I am very accustomed to eating spicy, Indian food. My friend and I ordered the samosas: I have had better at India sweets than here. Mediocre. The waiter came back, realizing he forgot to ask us how spicy we wanted it. We both said "spicy". The waiter had asked, mild or medium. When we said "spicy", he laughed, and said, "mild". I replied, "we both were just in India, and we can handle real, spicy Indian food". He laughed again, and when our food was delivered, it was indeed, mild. Instead of sending it back as we should have, we ordered hot sauce. Which you know is definitely not the same thing. We also ordered a mango lassi, which was fine. At the end of the meal, we ordered chai. Meh. India Sweets in Torrance on Hawthorne has better Chai, lassi, samosas, and curries. If you want someone to second guess your palate based on your skin color, come here. They'll indulge you.

I have been to this place like 4 to 5 times and even though the food is great, the service today was very poor. I recieved my order after all my family was done eating and when it did come it was burnt so I had to return it. I just hope when I go back my experience will be better.

This has always been one of my favorite restaurants but it seems to have changed since I was there last. Usually I go for lunch but this time we went for dinner. The food just wasn't up to par. The vada (my favorite) was hard and dense... it did not taste freshly made. The potatoes inside the dosa were like mashed potatoes. Same with the samosa filling. Even the coconut chutney was different -- not quite as spicy. Not sure what is going on there... Will try again at lunch time to see if there is any difference. I took an out of town guest for dinner there hoping for the great food usually served, but in all honestly -- it was sort of a let-down. I would like to know if the place is under new ownership. That could account for the change in food taste and preparation...

We had a lovely meal here. The service was kind and solicitous (and leisurely - don't come here if you are in a rush) and the food was consistently good. We had the spring vegetable dosa, the thali, samosas, vegetable korma, vegetable curry and everything couldn't have been better. The chutney that came with the meal was the only part none of us liked. Very reasonably priced. We would definitely come back. I think I would concentrate on the dosas next time only because they were so exceptional.

I have eaten here multiple times and I can honestly say Udupi is on the top of my list of favorite restaurants in Artesia. Everything from their Dosas to Somosas to Idlis are always fresh and tasty. Even on Thanksgiving the restaurant was completely filled portraying how good they are. Recently they have gotten a "B" rating which is the first time I've seen them with a health grade lower than an A. Still, that shouldn't turn you or anyone away.

Huh. Never reviewed this place despite having gone there for years when I lived in LA. A friend introduced me to the stretch of Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia with great Indian businesses. We'd go for inexpensive threading, good food, and interesting grocery purchases. While driving back from Torrance recently, I saw the exit for Artesia and took it on a whim. It was time for lunch, anyway. I took the bf, who loves Indian food, to Udupi Palace because I remembered the great dosas I'd had there. After years away, it did not disappoint. He got a dosa, and I ordered a thali. The thali was generous, so I shared. I don't know the names of every dish, but each of them was delicious. Prices are reasonable. (I was very excited years ago to see "Shopgirl" and hear Clare Danes and Jason Schwartzman's characters talk about going to Udupi Palace.)

  • William K.

Once you try the Thali, you will not want to order anything else. You get great variety in the eight or so dishes. We had beets and beans for the first time. The black eyed pea dish is also very good. Raita satisfies as does the somewhat strange dessert which seemed to be mango pudding and some thin pasta. Other menu items are good as well such as the eggplant. Our service was attentive. Water filled up regularly. We have been coming here for years and will return. We wonder about the "B" rating.

I ordered the lunch combo for $11, and it came with a lot of food (two vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, two soups, special rice, dessert, etc.), and EVERYTHING was delicious. I usually don't eat raita (yogurt), but theirs was the best I've ever had. The service was great, too. Even my non-vegetarian friend wants to go back. :)

  • Gabrielle W.

So yummy! Perfect for family style. The thali and paper dosa over fed my group of 4! Even an additional 3 people wouldn't have finished it. Very authentic and delicious! The service was great and knowledgeable. I highly recommend any and everybody put Udupi Palace on their Little India to-do list! You can't leave pioneer blvd without it!

I love their sambhar and vada. Tastes like authentic south Indian food. Their chai, coffee and dosas are very good too. Their pav bhaji was a little bit bland for my taste. If you ever get a chance do try their south Indian meals too. You will not regret it. My badam milk had way too much kesar. I could barely taste the badam. But hands down the best south Indian restaurant in Artesia and they are open pretty late (until 930) so that's an added bonus

Yay! Went here for a dosa and they did NOT disappoint! Big-ass perfectly made paper masala dosa. Beyond being downright delicious- it was cool to see. How they make something that large and that delicate always astounds me! Also, I'm a total puss about spicy food, I admit it. Still I love indian cuisune- as long as it is spiced correctly (ie: not just for heat and tongue burning) and this place did it perfectly. Enough heat to keep me challenged but not so much that I drank a whole pitcher of water and (figuratively) ran for the door. Sambar was perfection! Not too spicy at all and very nice and flavorful! Also had idli (yum) and medhu vada- which I honestly had not had before but found to be great. I want to go back and order another! Finally, the coconut curry sauce was SO good by the way- could have easily eaten that by the spoonful and called it a meal. What? I like coconut. It had a little heat to it, but was like sweet fresh coconut perfection. Service was a little slow at first, but we walked in amidst a couple larger groups... and once things got rolling, my water glass never got less than half-empty. They were very nice, attentive and prompt, and brought the bill out with a bog bowl of lollipops. A nice touch.

Not bad, not great. Certainly was thrilled to have South Indian Food again. My experiences in India gave me a taste for this delicious food. I only wish we had a good restaurant in Miami. Would I come back? YOu bet ya'. The dosas were delicious. The other items we ordered were great too. The Paneer for the Mutter Paneer was ok. I'm not a fan of little chunks like that. Service was ok. It's more a cafeteria style food delivery. The best part was coming in and seeing only South Indians. We were the only caucasians and I loved that the best. The place could use a little bit of a clean up though. Bussing the dirty dishes by the bathrooms was a big turn off.

Came here for lunch (11-3). I would've given this place 4 stars for the food alone, but they get an extra star for the truly wonderful servers. The "South Indian Thali" Special is the best 11 bucks ever spent on food. I'm still not quite sure what I ate (a lot of lentil-based carbs and curries, plus a dosa), but the manager was was kind enough to show two obviously non-Indians how exactly to eat everything. The portions are humongous, so make sure your eyes aren't bigger than your stomach. Parking is a bit hard, so try the neighborhood side streets.

  • Lai T.

Honestly, I was excited to come here after reading all the great reviews. About 3 weeks ago, my bf and I were quickly seated. Upon the waiter's suggestion we ordered the Thali to share (we weren't that hungry) and a chai tea. My bf wasn't too impressed with his tea. At the bottom of his cup was the powder from the mix which wasn't thoroughly blended. Overall, the food left us wanting. The breads were good, the rice was soggy and a bit too mushy for me. From the consistent influx of Indian patrons-I'm sure this place is legit. But the service was mediocre-none of the waiters ever came by to check on us after the food arrived. Instead, they were clustered around the register waiting for more patrons...needless to say, I won't be rushing back here.

This was not really an authentic south indian food. 2 punjabi vegetables(chholey and sour paneer palak) in a south indian thali is definitely not a south indian food. there is much better south indian food further north in bay area.

I highly recommend this place. Food is fresh and customer service is excellent. They are always willing to explain the different options in the menu. Another plus: this place is kids friendly. Without a doubt, my favorite place to eat in Artesia.

Ordered the Chana Batura which is a huge puffed bread served with a chickpea curry and yogurt sauce. The bread is a huge puff of dough went very well with the curry and the tart yogurt sauce. The bread is really quite a spectacle when they first bring it out, think fully inflated balloon. Can't really comment on any of the other dishes but prices are very reasonable for the quality and amount of food. Will come again if in the area.

Absolutely TERRIBLE service and not sanitary at all. Found a long hair on my plate. I came with my family and they brought everybody food except my Dad. Then when we told them he still hadn't gotten the food yet, our waiter said "what do you want me to do about it?" My dad didn't end up getting food - he just cancelled the order because everyone else was already done. None of our food was comped or anything, and worst of all we didn't even get an apology. Shitty, unclean place with really subpar service and average food.

I absolutely love this place. It's a must stop for us every time we come to Artesia. I am so in love with the Rasam - a super spicy soup! Everything on the menu is divine - trust me I know- cause we have ordered it all!

My first experience with Southern Indian food was here. Thoroughly enjoyed it and had been back many times to try the vast offerings. In general, not had a dish that disappointed us yet. Beware that some of the dish can be pretty hot, this is coming from someone who can pack the heat in. The Dosa are great here, we also always enjoyed their soup, great for cold days. But can be very spicy.

A variety of dosas available. Particularly enjoyed the huge paper dosa with potaters. (: Note: the cheese dosa tastes like a quesadilla. No buffet here, order off menu. Nothing fancy, but clean. Good service (nice, explained dishes, patient, frequent check-ins), decent food. Not too busy on the weekend lunch hour when we went. Help yourself to a Jolly Rancher lollipop on the way out. Pioneer St is busy but there is a lot of free parking around. I am glad that Artesia has some south Indian options to the usual north Indian variety that we know as Indian food in the US.

This may not be the most authentic South Indian Restaurant but it's much better then then the other Indian restaurants. + : All Dosas on the menu are great. You can't go wrong ordering a Dosa from their menu. The Paper Dosa is huge. My favorite is Spl Rava Masal Dosa. I am yet to try the Spring Dosa. All Dosas are served with Chutney and Sambar. I have tried their Avial-not great-but ok. We also tried the Idli-which were fair. I liked the Medhu Vada. Chilli pakora is great!! I have seen a lot of people ordering Chana bhatura-but can't comment on their taste since i have not tasted it here. Speed of service is fast. Our server Praveen provided great service -: Very less space and gets extremely crowded on weekends, we had to literally squeeze to fit in and eat. Tip: I have always ordered south Indian dishes only(no North Indian dishes)from a South Indian restaurants and have not been disappointed so far.

Luckily we found parking right on the street in front of restaurant. One of the waiters told us where to sit although he didnt seem very friendly. Our waiter was ok but he only came to check on us After we finished eating. We ordered appetizers, given by a girl from the kitchen who seemed like she didn't want to be there, not friendly at all. My bf got his okra masala entree and I had to wait at least 5 mins for my entree. Samosas were good, everything else was just ok. Not worth going to again.

Travelling with pure vegetarian south indian parents we were looking for a good indian restaurant to eat dinner in LA... we found Udupi Palace in Artesia.. it had 4 stars on Yelp so we decided to give it a try... Our opinion was that the food is a sad excuse for South Indian food... We have never seen a south indian restaurant which does not serve Curd Rice, a necessity for south indians... the food tasted average and was not genuine... Not sure if the owner is from Udipi.... This place is not the best choice for South Indian food....

Back again for more! It's appealing to me that the service was just as friendly and exceptional as last time. Specifically came back to Udupi for more Baigan Barth (mashed eggplant curry) but figured we might as well explore some other dishes on the menu. So we also ordered the Rice Pullao (rice with green peas and mild spices) and Chana Masala (chickpeas in "very delicious curry sauce"). All of them were successful dishes, but of course the eggplant curry was still the best of the three. Rice pullao was really spicy (in the savory, lots of spice sense; not heat-wise). As for the chana masala, the curry sauce was good, but nothing jaw-dropping. I know I'll be back again for more eggplant curry, but I must remember to order the dosas next time since it seems to be quite popular here.

I'm a self proclaimed ultra critic on south Indian food. Well there's a good reason for that... I've been spoiled by my mom's food for far too long to not be critical of the same food outside. Well, this one made it on to my list. They have amazing dosas, thalis, idli and food in general. My bhatura was slightly oilier than what I like but what do I expect when I order deep fried dough.. LOL!!! They actually have an amazing selection of dosas from rava dosa to paper masala dosa. The service was good too. Very accommodating even with a large party of 12. We had to move up the time we were getting there cuz of a baby's schedule (one of those things we're learning about with mini mes popping up lately ;). The place was ultra accommodating with all age groups. Great place for family meals. It's a mom n pop style so don't expect fancy seating but you won't be dissappointed with the food and service.

Ah yes, this day has been long overdue. Yes, I'm 1/8 Indian for your information. I know. I said the same thing. I found out a few years ago that my great grandfather was Indian. Full on, you wouldn't believe it, Indian! No wonder why my mom and some of my cousins look of that descent. Who knew? Despite my Asian-y features and ways, the moment I found out, I'd always been interested in the culture. This was my first time in Little India just a few blocks from my neighborhood, nestled in Artesia / Cerritos area. When you first walk into the restaurant you will be greeted by wonderful and attentive hospitality. Seated and given the menu to look over. At this point I wouldn't' know where to begin. But alas, I find something. I chose the Spinach and Onion Curry Dish. Once served, it came with a tortilla like bread which was soft and warm, rice and another thinly crispy tortilla which tasted just like a Lay's potato chip. Yogurt too was accompanied with this meal. I know! Weird! But when mixed all together, yummy! Our server made sure that our water glasses were always full. Now, that's a plus!

This is my favorite place for South Indian food and especially dosas. Whenever someone asks about trying South Indian food, I bring them here. I also reference here as the best place to try dosas. The service is great, seating is comfortable and place is air conditioned, food is clean, and it's the best I've ever had. Plus there is plenty of street parking but also a parking lot behind the restaurant. My favorites are the sada rava dosa and chana batura. They are also very nice about bringing out extra sauces, if you want more spice or mango chutney. Among all the indian places I've eaten at, this place makes the best coconut chutney.

My friend recommended this place and said this restaurant was really good.... I had high expectations but I guess my experience here did not reach it. I ordered Chana Masala and Masala Dosa... Both were so so... nothing grabbed my attention... maybe I ordered something else...

Nothing special about this place. The service and prices are reasonable. The south indian thali dinner was totally unimpressive. I recently had the south indian thali at the Toronto location of Udupi Vegetarian Palace, and was hoping, praying, that the one here would be at least half as good. No such luck. If you're craving vegetarian south indian, I personally think that Annapurna in Culver City is a better option...

Holy Jesus son of freaking Mary. I didn't think it could be done. But after today, the impossible became possible: For the first time in my life, I seriously considered becoming a VEGETARIAN. Even writing the word feels sinful, like profanity. I take meat seriously - I can order 3x3s at In n Out, I'll finish off the kalbi at KBBQ when everyone else is stuffed, I'd choose a rack of ribs over fish any day. But once I stepped into this alternate universe, all my beliefs about meat and life and love suddenly disintegrated beneath me. And I didn't even order an entree. Okay so on that last assertion alone, you might be tempted to throw out my review. But allow me to explain. I came here with a friend and neither of us had ANY prior exposure to South Indian cuisine. We were foolishly looking for na'an and chicken tikka masala.. but to no avail. Our waiter was extremely helpful, polite and very caring. I think he got a kick at how utterly clueless we were. We each ordered a milk tea (subtly sweet, very soothing) and for starters, wanted to try the potato samosa. He suggested we also try the dosa as well, since we'd never had one before. I wish I could remember his name because he was so sweet - I even asked for his name after the meal but have since forgot it. Moments later, two samosas come out, hot and ready to be devoured. It was SO good. The battered and fried outer crust was delicious! I had forgotten how complex Indian spices are. This was definitely an acid trip for the taste buds. There were two sauces to dip the samosa in (one was brown and sweet, the other green and more savory). I guess since I don't have any expectation or knowledge of South Indian food, my expectations are now SKY HIGH because those magical balls of vegetable goodness. Next came the dosa. It was a riot, my friend and I couldn't stop laughing. We'd seen the table behind us order the dosa and it was about the size of an oval plate - perhaps a foot long at most. Ours came out and it was literally THREE FEET long. I've never gotten a dish THAT humongous. A potato/coriander type mash, a hummus-type spread (which was AMAZING) and a soup came with the dosa. The dosa is basically an Indian style crepe: a thinly cooked sheet of dough that's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They wrap it into a cone-like shape and you break off pieces to dip in the potato or spread. I can't tell you how exciting it was to get a crepe that was AS long as our table. It was ridonkulous! So fun to eat. We had been planning to try one of the curry dishes as our main entree but we didn't even get halfway through the dosa. After we decided we couldn't take any more dosa-eating, we decided to try a desert and settled on the Gulab Jamun, which is a fried ball of cheese wading in a pool of light syrup and rose water. The serving comes with two balls and the syrup has some sliced almonds in it. The cheeseballs were pretty good, extremely soft and surprisingly, not cheesy at all. The syrup is very subtle, like the milk tea. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet and you could taste hints of the rose water. Our waiter offered to pack up the remaining two feet of our dosa and gave us Styrofoam to take home the dips. Then he gave us Jolly Rancher lollipops with our bill. :) This place gets 5 stars because either the food could have been mediocre and the service great, or the service mediocre and the food great. But both were absolutely wonderful. I would definitely come here again and again and bring more and more friends. If you don't get to try new foods very often, take a chance with this place as they are very obliging and hospitable with people who don't know what they're doing. My friend and I carried our child-sized dosa to the parking lot to take a few pictures with it (true tourists we are). It was definitely an unexpected yet highly memorable dining experience.

Okay, I am a veteran of North Indian restaurants, but this was my first foray into South Indian foods. We ordered a Thali for my party of 3 to share and a masala dosa also to share. First off, let me say that this stuff is completely different from what I am used to when having indian....but just as good. The thali made me want to have more of everything I had sampled and the dosa was surprisingly.........HUGE! Because of this restaurant I have vowed to become a connoisseur of South Indian delicasies. The only negative is that they do not serve cervezas. This prabably has something to do with the whole vegetarian thing, but I do really enjoy a cold beer when out to dinner. And, no, a mango lassi does not fill the void.

i've been here several times. this places serves up the best dosa in cerritos. i've had the cheese, paper, spring and masala dosas. all are great. the thali is really good and filling the chai and coffee are served up south indian style. great place

Nice Atmosphere - clean floors, bright colors, pleasant music. Only drawback is how cavernous the place sounds when it's slow. Decent Food - It isn't the best Indian I've ever had, but it was really delicious all the same. I couple of the things we ordered were dishes I'd never heard of before - my friend says this is because the food hails from South India which is different from the Indian we're used to seeing everywhere. I thought it was all very interesting and delicious. Misc - Street parking was easy to find. They give you lollipops after your meal! The prices are a little high for the quality, IMHO. The mango lasses are amazing :D

Came here with two friends who had never had South Indian cuisine before. We decided to order the two sampler plates. The food was decent, but definitely short of good. Since the dishes were all vegetarian, the flavorings consisted mainly of salt. oil, and seasoning. In my opinion, most of the plates offered here were either too salty or too greasy. We also tried the rose lassi, which tasted mainly of yogurt. It was laced with a bright pink syrup that consisted of rose water and sugar.

I didn't like this place very much. Maybe it was the odd waiter who kept staring at our group, or perhaps the use of onions in just about everything. I went here with a small group of people. Much food was ordered. Most of it had a lot of flavor, but it wasn't good flavor at all. Either extremely spicy or just unusual. Normally I really enjoy Indian food, however this place was not enjoyable at all!

I will tell you this. I am Indian. I am also British. I grew up in Los Angeles. And I grew up with an AVERSION to veggies and rice. Cut to maybe... five or six years ago? I'm JUST starting to get over my aversion to rice. I'm *TRYING* to open myself up to foods that do not sit in the range of: Meat, Cheese, Bread. My father took my family to Artesia, and the food stop of his choice was Udupi Palace. I was wary. I was scared. It's a South Indian VEGETARIAN Restaurant. My usual Indian food usually consisted of, back then, chicken tikka and naan bread. That's all I'd eat. So, you can imagine my surprise when my dad immediately says I should try the paper masala dosa. I acquiesce, meek as a kitten, completely vulnerable in this place where there is no chicken available. And out comes this place with this MASSIVE thing rolled on top of it with these little cups full of things I don't know the names of! But I try it. I try it and I am .... amazed. It's SO GOOD! Needless to say, I tried to eat as much of it as possible. The potatoes were so good. The dosa was soooooo good. The side dishes were so good. I was so happy, in fact, that I was trying whatever else my dad had ordered that he offered to me. Hands down, I love this place. And they're the first place I actually tried a Chai. And it was so superb to me. I'm such an inexperienced Indian, but when something really makes me happy, I know it's delicious. I'm currently writing this review after spending the last half hour discussing Indian food with some... Harry Potter Chatters. Yep. I really hope I get a chance to go to this place ASAP, because I'm fantasizing about you, Paper Masala Dosa.

The only problem is that I can never eat everything I want to order! Best chana masala I've ever had. Spring dosa and veg utthapam are amazing. You will not be disappointed! Excellent service and ambiance. I have never ever been disappointed.

i live Not Close To Artesia. so whenever my friend suggests a pilgrimage to this South Indian vegetarian place, my heart skips a beat in excitement. i'm not even vegetarian, but i LOVE pretty much everything about the fabulous Udupi Palace. -easy, free parking in the back. -clean, gracious restaurant space, which doesn't feel crowded even when busy. -the service is as good as it gets -- the staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the food, gracious, and attentive. their shirts say "more sambar?" and they mean it. -but of course, the star of Udupi Palace is the eye-rollingly, tummy-happyfying, tastebud glorifying FOOD. everything i've ever ordered has been top-notch, whether it be a curry, a dosa, an idli, or one of the excellent lunch specials. the dishes always taste fresh and "home-cooked," in other words, not made in a huge, bland batch. tip: for a truly impressive visual experience (and a tasty one), order a paper dosa. that thing is HUGE. share with a friend. be happy.

If the Bosses serve food and eat there then it should be a great place. I had the privelege of meeting the owners of this restaurant. This is ONE OF THE TOP SOUTH INDIAN VEGETARIAN RESTAURANTS IN THE USA. The place is clean, service is good, food tastes excellent. What else do you need. I strongly recommend this restaurant to everyone who wants to eat authentic south Indian food. The only precaution I would give is that some of the DOSAS are TOO LONG. MT DOUBLE THUMBS UP They DO Not Take American Express

This place is wonderful.. they have great thali's, pongol, and chai. The staff is friendly and very helpful in ordering if you are unsure of your wants. This is southern Indian vegetarian fare, which is uniquely different from northern Indian restaurants. Expect spicy, flavorful dishes, but this is not the place if you want tandori chicken, chicken masala, etc.

I liked this place. The portions are big and the prices are reasonable. I liked all the items in the Thali, which is huge and a good item to share.

I'm not Indian. But to be certain, I know my Indian food. I didn't dub myself the 'Curry Hunter' for nothing. I've been on the hunt for a good dosa in Southern California for nearly a year, I've had A LOT of dosai, some excellent, some meh and some absolutely intolerable. Tonight however, I found the best one in Artesia at a little South Indian restaurant called Udupi Palace. Astrid and I rolled into Udupi around 6:00 pm and the place was packed with Indian families stuffing their faces with crispy dosa, idly and utthappam. One look at the clientele and their extensive dosa menu and I was ready for something spectacular. I ordered a Mysore Masala Dosa, a triangluar-shaped spicy thin rice crepe stuffed with masala potatoes. Astrid ordered a Special Rava Masala Dosa, a thin, crispy crepe made from creamed semolia bursting with chopped onions and chilies. The masala filling in both dosai were loaded with potato, dal and spices and was EXCELLENT! The cooling coconut chatni was the best I've had in SoCal, loaded with mustard seed and spices, but still cool to the taste. The sambar was some of the spiciest I've had since coming back from India a year ago. We also ordered sweet lassi which were a perfect accompaniment for the spicy meal. The waiters shirts invite you to ask for 'MORE SAMBAR!' So we did, and were presented with two full cups of the spicy ambrosia. The top of my head was sweating in happiness! Now I know most yelpers don't know squat about Indian food, but please let me break it down for you so you don't complain about or write stupid shit in your reviews: 1. South Indian food is NOT North Indian food. Don't expect them to do rich curries very well. It's not in their blood. Get over it. 2. The metal plates and cups in which they serve their food is VERY traditional in India. If you don't like it, eat somewhere else. 3. Chili pakoras are hot. They're made with chilies. DUH. 4. Please read the menu- it's RAVA not SAVA. Seriously though, go here for an amazing dosa. You won't be sorry. Tell them the Curry Hunter sent you. They'll just look at you dumbfounded, but tell them anyway. [The Curry Hunterâ„¢ Seal of Approval]

Food is delicious! Everything that we ate was so tasty. I don't know much about South Indian food so my (Indian) friend ordered us a thali, dosas, all sorts of other things I can't remember ... helpful, I know. Definitely get the thali to try a bunch of stuff if you're new. Don't bother with the tea / coffee -- it's not spiced as well as other Indian restos I've been to. Service was ok, friendly but slow. Ambiance is not great but you're coming for the food.

Really spicy and nice South Indian food. I love their Idli and Sada Dosa. Their filter coffee is also very authentic and tasty.

I crave for the day I can come back here again! I agree that this is one of the best South Indian (and is there any better type of indian food?) restaurants in the US. I have eaten at Udupi Palace in San Francisco, Berkeley and Artesia, each experience being just as lovely as the next. Once I found out about Thali, I stumbled upon my favorite way to eat food. Traditionally, in India, Thali is an all-you-can-eat dining experience where you are served a number of small portions of various vegetarian rice, dal and vegetable dishes in small metal bowls, along with white rice and naan. Udupi Palace is not all-you-can-eat, but frankly you don't want it to be: the amount you are given and the various dishes are absolutely perfect in taste and proportion. I have never left a Thali dish here with any food left in it. I have never actually been to India, but I can't imagine that the Thali there is better than at Udupi Palace, unless there is an Udupi Palace in India! Although there are some fixed entrees in Udupi's Thali, what you are served will depend on the season and what the chef decided to make that day. One particularly memorable dish was a winter melon, a yellow sweet buttery concoction that was one of the most wonderful tastes I have ever had in my mouth. It's also a treat when they prepare okra, my favorite food, period. This is a great place to take a group of friends. Little India is fun to walk around in afterwards, venturing into the Indian trinket shops and groceries. Jai Udupi Palace!

So I have a slightly mixed review for Udupi... 2 for food but 4 for service. I ordered: SOUTH INDIAN THALI (Rasam, sambar, poriyal, daal, 2 vegetables of the day, special rice, white rice, chapati, papad, pickle, raita and payasam) The rasam was alright, but salty on top of spicy. The sambar was a fantastic cure-all for a few dishes. I wanted one of the shirts that a few of the staff were wearing "More Sambar!" I suspect that 'porival' is a mistype on the menu and what I got was 'pongal' - but whichever, this particular dish (rice, cauliflower, curry, lentils) was not good. Very bitter - as if one of the spices might have been overtoasted... sambar cured it. The daal was bitter too but ok tempered with raita. Overall a just okay experience with the exception that the payasam was lovely to end on. My friend had: MASALA DOSA (Sada Dosa stuffed with mildly spiced mashed potatoes) BHINDI MASALA (Okra cooked in mild south Indian style gravy) Despite our request that his meal be 'vegan', we suspected that the bhindi may have had dairy in it ... a stomach can be a indisputable critic. The staff and service though was fantastic. I wanted the food to match their super attitudes but food-wise I've had better. I hope to try another location though ...

Came here after having a sudden urge of Chala Masala and Mango Lassi. So Ha and I decided to give this place a try. The Chala Masala was nicely cooked, but I was expecting to get Basmati rice with my order. instead I got medium grain white rice. The Mango Lassi was excellent, nice sweetness to counter-balance all the spice you are getting with the food. The place itself is clean, the food was reasonably priced (I believe the dish was $7.95 while the Mango Lassi was $3.25) and the servers were nice. So why 3 stars? For one, Ha's dish arrived first, while it took an additional 7-10 minutes for my order to arrive. On another note, my friend (who is from Zambia, but is ethnically Indian) cooked a dish similar to this, but tasted better. I've got to warn folks that this restaurant is Vegetarian only. If you want Indian food with chicken or lamb, try "The India Restaurant" down the road.

This is the place to go for south Indian cuisine! I have been here over twenty times, and I have never been disappointed. The Udupi Palace Special is a must for people who are new to the restaurant or Indian food in general. I always get the special with a masala dosa or a mysore masala dosa (spicy but I HIGHLY recommend it). The service is outstanding :)

I love their dosas...if you are a vegetarian, this is your paradise!! I usually order the rava onion masala dosa and these folks really know how to make this one...takes me back to my time in India. Perfect potato filling and the dosa is crisp and yummy. The Mysore masala is also good, it's spicy as the inside is layered with red chilli powder (the real thing from India and not paprika!), so if you aren't fond of spiciness, don't order this one. The one thing I would avoid is the dahi vada (lentil balls in yogurt sauce), it was awful! Maybe because I have eaten the super soft ones in India, this was hard as a rock and I ended up leaving it after 2 bites. Stick to the dosas or the Idlis...overall one of my fav dosas places in LA. Until Saravana bhavan opens in LA (check out their Sunnyvale location), this will be one of my fav dosas joints!

I surprised my husband by taking him to "little India" in Artesia since he is a Midwestern man and had yet to experience Pioneer Blvd. in all of its greatness. We noticed this place next door to an all you can eat indian restaurant, and decided to go with Udupi because we are vegetarians and not really all that knowledgeable about Indian food. My husband ordered the Chana Masala with a type of huge billowy bread. I forget the name of the bread, but there is a picture of it on the menu.My husband has a Homer-esque hankering for anything fried, sugar-coated and round in a pink box. To our discovery, the bread was like a hybrid of a croissant and doughnut. In addition to the chana masala, my husband was one happy man. The service was fast. The place was clean. The price of dinner for two (with appetizer, drink, and 1 desert) was around thirty bucks. Not bad if I do say so myself. Try the lemon sorbet--- PHENOMENAL!

Udupi Palace, baby~! Yes, more sambar please! Vegetarian cuisine usually tastes like a bland, tasteless cardboard paste that doesn't even fill you up. South Indians have been vegetarian for centuries and they've absolutely perfected the art. Udupi Palace keeps the tradition alive with signature dishes made with fresh ingredients. Everything served here is piping hot and tastes vibrant. After the meal, you won't believe you didn't have a single piece of meat. You'll be stuffed full and VERY satisfied. Go try what you like and don't be shy with the menu. The staff never hesitates to give you recommendations. I have yet to have a bad meal here. This place is awesome!

Good South Indian food... not North Indian... so if you are looking for curries and greasy, spicy food look elsewhere. South indian food mainly consists of lots of lentils, vegetables, vegetarian and healthy options. In fact, everything here is vegetarian. I prefer this South Indian restaurant to Tirupathi Bhimas (which is one block away). The service is better here, they were always checking on us and refilling our water (unlike at Tirupathi Bhimas), they have an A for health (while Tirupathi Bhimas has a C), and finally the food here tastes better. Below are my top favorite items: -Sava Dosa (made with cream of wheat... its like a pancake) any regular dosa (made with white lentils.... thin fermented pancake) -Idly Sambar - fluffy thick fermented pancake in a lentil soup -Dahi Vada (like a lentil donut in yogurt sauce....) - Spring Dosa (a thin pancake-like item made out of urad daal (black lentils) and rice... stuffed with potatoes and veggies) Note: I've been to the Bellevue, WA location as well and the quality is pretty consistent.

Came based on a friend's recommendation. I was also interested in trying this place since I haven't different types of Indian food other than at an Indian buffet dipping naan in curry. Medhu Vada - Lentil flour deep fried in the shape of Donuts - 2 pieces in each order - not as fluffy and light as a donut since it's pretty starchy - I preferred the red sauce as opposed to the creamier one which tasted like coconut - it's decent but not a must order Masala Dosa ($6,95) - Dosas are thin crispy crepes made of rice and lentil flour - Sada Dosa stuffed with mildly spiced mashed potatoes - very light - also had the same dipping sauces as in the Medhu Vada - one may also request to have the masala on the side Masala Uthapam ($6,95) - Similar to pancakes - Topped with our famous mildly spiced potatoes - more filling than the dosa - same dipping sauces as the Medhu Vada and Masala Dosa Gulab Jamun - warm donuts floating in warm sweet syrup - 2 pieces in each order - ask them to serve it WARM - traditional Indian dessert so it's a must try! Environment: very quiet for a Friday evening. Nothing overly special of the ambiance other than the pictorial images displaying the Indian culture. The tables are also pre-set when you are seated. Service: Decent. Refilled our waters and allowed us to sit and chat even though they were closing soon. Even though their kitchen was closed, we were also able to order the Gulab Jamun. Overall, decent place to try South Indian food. It's definitely "healthier" or at least seems like it compared to other traditional Indian restaurants. The prices are also decent. The only thing is that one may not be full after eating the dosas since they are really light but probably high in caloric value. This is also a vegetarian establishment so if you're a mad carnivore this place may not be for you.

Last week we went to Cerritos to visit our relatives and we ordered some food such as masala dosa , channa bhathura, and 6 samosas. When we brought them home, we discovered there was a hair on the masala dosa, almost all 6 samosas were old and reheated in the microwave by them, and both chutneys were very tasteless. We paid over $30.00. We have been there before and the food was good, but we are never going back after this experience.

Best S. Indian in the Artesia area. Still doesn't match S. Indian food in India though. I'm not sure why restaurants here in the US are so partial to serving their dosas and idly without chutneys, or only with coconut chutney, but it is incredibly disappointing. I have been here twice. Both times the service was great. The staff friendly and helpful. They are quick to fill your water. Their Mysore Dosa is pretty darn good. I miss the red and green chutneys that normally are served with this dish, and the sambar leaves something to be desired. It's a bit salty and lacking in spice. I think it is missing some spice that most places use... not sure. In any case, I skip the sambar completely here. Just pig out on my spicy dosa. :) Their channa is also nice. It comes with so much poori/batura that you're left searching for it underneath, but that certainly is not a complaint. In all, this is the only place I go for S. Indian food anymore. It still could improve a couple things, but I am going to be honest here and say that they do a fine job on a whole and are worth the trip if you're partial to this style of Indian food.

Southern Indian cuisine... I tried it before at another "li'l India" establishment but have always preferred the northern variety more. The food at Udupi was mmm... mmm... yeah! We had the special vegetable curry and one of their fried bread with garbanzo beans dish. Excellent service and very patient with my wife and I as we took our sweet-mango-lassi time to order our meal. I will definitely come back.

When I first moved to LA from the east coast I was generally very disappointed in the Indian food I was trying. Then I asked an Indian co-worker where she goes and learned about Little India in Cerritos! I ended up at Udupi that first time and go back every time i'm in the area. I could go on an on about the all vegetarian menu but if it's your first time just get the daily Thali for a little taste of it all!

Went there with a friend of mine. I'm not a huge fan of Indian restaurants in LA as I haven't found a place that could me impress. But also I'm very picky when it concerns Indian food (well, food in general). South Indian cuisine is one of my favorite and more often I'm some what disappointed in restaurant food. I took Mysore masala dosa which supposed to be spicy. Not sure why, but it was very mild to my taste. Sambar was very salty. Medhu vada wasn't bad though. We didn't take any dessert but we took chai which was ok but once again nothing to jump around. :) And just of curiosity why South Indian place doesn't have Kotthu Parota in their menu? But I guess I would have to ask the owners... Maybe next time.. if..

Always a pleasure. Discovered this wonderful place when stuck in bi-Metro, LA - San Diego traffic. So pleased to have found this gem. All vegetarian and delicious too. Don't know what you want? No problem. Here they've suggestions and it's always a taste adventure.

For just under $7 I got the express lunch that was soooo filling I could not finish. It was delicious and vegetarian you can get it vegan by not ordering raita and no chapati. I didn't ask, but chapatis may be brushed with ghee (butter) just safer not to eat it, if you are vegan. I had the express lunch that came with 2 kinds of soups, sambar rice (rice with vegetables), regular basmati rice and two vegetable dishes, papad (crispy dough), & mango chutney. It was so filling I can't imagine what the thali includes. I will have to come back with more space in my tummy. I live about 30 minutes away and its definitely worth the drive to be able to enjoy great veg food.

I guess I forgot I didn't really like this restaurant the last time I went and went again to get a mysore masala dosa today. BLAH. I've eaten dosas all over the place and this was probably the worst I've had. When I left the majority of my plate full the waiter laughed and asked if it was too spicy for me. Uhhh no, it just sucked! NEXT!!!!

Great dosas! The masala and rava dosas are pretty freakin awesome. I also had the sambar vada which was an okay appetizer. The mango lassi hit the spot too. The reason I'm giving it four stars and not five is because of the service (our waiter was rude and seemed annoyed). Also the tables were crammed together and it seemed like the waiters were constantly rushing past our table. It's pretty loud in there as well. Overall = great food + not so great service.

Good South Indian food! I've been coming here for years. The flavors are different than the typical North Indian style restaurant food most people are familiar with. For a good variety, order the thali platter. I love the crispy, paper thin masala dosas. The food can be a bit spicy if you're not used to it. But I say try it!

The service and food was amazing! Once I informed our waiter that I'm vegan, he was quick to identify which food and beverages I could consume. While this is a vegetarian restaurant, it's always refreshing when I do not need to explain veganism. He was always checking in on us to make sure we were enjoying our dining experience and if we needed anything else. Can't wait to come back again!

Lately, I've had the biggest hankering for Indian food. I've never had Indian before, but know that it is similar to curry and contains a lot of different spices. Originally, I thought of curry and just dreamed of all the spices all mixed in one big bowl. Well, my experience with Udupi Palace was different, but nonetheless, very tasty. Udupi is basically borderline of Cerritos and down Pioneer which is not too far away from Guppy Tea House. For this restaurant, you will have to park on the street, but it is not extremely packed in India Village. The restaurant is not extremely large, but it seats a good amount of tables. As my sister and I entered the restaurant, the servers were very friendly and greeted us right away. You have your option to choose wherever you would like to sit. If you're a first timer, they will gladly go over the menu with you and teach you the proper way of eating the dishes. Indeed, this place is vegetarian friendly, but not much greens on your plate. I'm not quite too sure if it is the fact that this is Southern Indian, or just Indian in general? Anyhow, the mango lassi is very good here. If you are a fan of mangos and the creamy, rich yet sweet flavor, you are in for a treat! I ordered the Chai for my beverage to start and finish my meal and it was different. Usually, with Chai (from Starbucks and all these other Americanized places) it is watered down and a bit on the sweet side. When I had the first sip to this cup of hot Chai in my orange cup, it was milky with this silky texture and not sweetened at all. I love the fact that you are allowed to control the sugar content and have the option of how sweet you'd like it. Half a pack of Splenda and a quick stir later, this was perfect! Moving along, since I am a first timer, I wanted to try every appetizer on the menu. So, the smartest thing to do was to listen to my stomach and we ordered the Assorted Hordoeres which consisted almost everything on the menu for roughly 12 dollars. It came with a variety of sauces which all had unique flavors. You really must have a open mind for the different flavors; all were very tasty. WARNING: ALL the samples are deep fried and may hurt you if you're healthy! But, you live once so try it! **side note, the lentil dumpling was a bit of a let down. It was very hard and not filled with beans like I thought. But, it's okay. If that wasn't enough, we ordered the Papad (which is very similar to a tortilla, but lighter). For our main course, we ordered the Chana Batura. To my surprise, this fluffy bread was gigantic and fresh! Not to sound like a bad foodie, but the bread reminded me of the Chalupa bread from Taco Bell--this comparison is suppose to be for the good! The whole dish was very good. The chickapea curry was not too heavy and had an abundant amount of spices and flavors that burst in your mouth. On the side, they give you a small portion of yogurt that is topped with a generous amount of cilantro, peas, and carrots. Personally, I thought the yogurt would be a bit odd. But, it is refreshing and very light. They are very generous here and don't give you odd looks if you aren't Indian. The service was good and they were consistent with filling our water glasses. By the end of the meal, they give you this bowl of Jolly Rancher lollipops for you to pick one as a sweet finish. Great first experience and will definitely be searching for other Indian places. This one will be a keeper in my books though!

If you get one thing try the Chana Batura ($7.95). I also tried the Mysore dosa. It wasn't as crisp or fermented as the dosa in sunnyvale but the coconut chutney made up for it.

After a recommendation from a nice Indian man that I met at a networking event, I tried Udupi Palace with friends last night. I enjoyed the experience. It was a nice way to meet halfway, but I am not sure that I would trek out there just for the food. First disappointment was no beer for the guys. C'est la vie - no sweat off my back. The restaurant is clean. Kind of an Indian diner. Husband ordered the Udupi Palace Special with a Spring Dosa and it comes with Idli and Medhu-Vada. The fried lentil donut was very tasty and super fresh. The spicy cream of wheat concoction was delicious. The little stew was a bit cold, but the donut was yummy in it. The dosas come out way later. It was hot, crispy and delicious. I had never had a dosa before, but I imagine that this is the best that you can get. I ordered the Bhindi Masala. It was delicious. I wish that it had been spicier. I order medium, because I have been to some Indian spots where spicy would blow my lid off. Unfortunately, it took it as white girl medium, and it was pretty mild. It was served with chapati and papadam as well as pickle and raita and white rice. I basically ate the curry with the chapati and ate the pickle. I think white rice is so boring - I wish that it had some curry powder or saffron in it. However, the curry gravy was amazing. Even if it was not as spicy as I prefer, the flavors were on point. And, there were only a few woody pieces of okra. For dessert, we ordered the galub jamun and Chai. The chai was perfect - some of the best that I have ever had. The galub jamun was a real disappointment. It was probably the worst that I have ever had. I recommend skipping dessert. Get an appetizer - our friends had the samosas, which were on point! Overall, I recommend Udupi for the dosa or for food if you are in the Artesia area.

My friend and I went to Little India with no clue of where to eat. Fairly unfamiliar with South Indian food, vegetarian, and hungry to the point of nausea, we wandered into Udupi Palace, which was still startlingly busy at 2:30pm (and seems to be the go-to place to bring screaming toddlers). The menu offered decent explanations of the various dishes, and while we were deciding, staff asked us a couple times if they could answer any questions, which could definitely be helpful. It took us forever to decide, though, only because everything sounded so delicious. We started with the samosas, which were a little spicier than I'm used to and came with two sauces. Our entrees came up quickly: I'd ordered the masala dosa, a crispy crepe big enough for me to use as a blanket, folded over with potatoes inside. It came with two sauces, one was yogurt, the other might have been ghee? My friend had the chana masala, a chickpea curry, accompanied by poori, a giant puffy fried bread the size of a cantaloupe (until it deflates). The curry was definitely a little spicier than I like (ok, I'm weak), but good with poori. We were too stuffed for dessert, but I was intrigued by the flavors of sorbet, served in the fruit it's made from. We were presented with a big bowl of Jolly Rancher lollipops to choose from when our check was brought. When we split the bill, it came out to about $12.50 each, including tip, which isn't bad at all! And since my friend promptly returned to central California, I need someone else to go with. Jessica H.? Gori S.? Some other reader?

Was their for Vadas(Medu Madav) and surprisingly it was quite hard and tasteless. Did spoke to manager and it seems the last set of vadas are made at 5 PM and after that they only reheat the vadas. Not expected to get such a bad vada from a core south indin restaurant. They also blamed the dough and still charging for vadas..weird.. Dosas were much better but start was pretty bad and response from manager didnt help either. In all no vadas for me in uditi.

Loved the food but the service wasn't so great. Each time we needed something we had to wait for the servers to stop talking to each other before we could call them over. We asked our first server what the most popular dishes are because it was our first time there and he did not know how to answer so another server came out and gave some options. We ordered Samosas for appetizers. These little triangle wraps are the best spicy potato mix and the flavors are amplified by the perfect dips. For the entree we had Chana Batura and Masala Dosa. The Masala Dosa is, essentially, the same as the Samosa but the Chana Batura is the BOMB!! Not only is it our favorite thing now, but when the server brings it out to you it's still a large fluffy bubble. You have to poke it with your fork and tear it apart with your hands, dipping it in the curry, to fully enjoy it. Oh man, it's an experience that won us over. Even my cousin who hates exotic food liked it. Mango Lassi is also very good for a hot day: mildly sweet, creamy and refreshingly cool. At the end of your meal they will offer a bowl of lollipops. My only other gripe is the limited parking situation. You can park behind the restaurant, though.

Oh, this place made me happy. The Udupi Palace special with idli, medhu-vada and a tomato and pea uthapam was first out. All were well prepared and whetted our tastebuds for the masala dosa. . The dosa was slightly crispy and the masala were a joyous filling.. then paired with the chutney and sambar. *slurp* so good. If you are out and about in Little India, check this place out. I can't wait to head back.

LOVE this place. Best vegetarian restaurant. Their food is so delicious and authentic. It almost reminds me of kerala. The dosas are amazing. But my favorite is Chana Batura. Better than any north indian restaurant. My bf loves dosa so much so we go here so often.

If you like south indian, Udupi is the place. My co-workers introduced me to this wonderful restaurant who not only serve great food, but have friendly wait staff. My favorite item on the menu is the "mysore masala dosa" w/ cheese. It comes with sambar and chutney and will make a complete meal. Udupi's Dosa is amazing!

My friend and I were craving Indian food and decided to venture off from our usual haunts. We chose Udupi Palace based on a recommendation from a friend, and we both agreed it was a choice well made. The menu offered many tantalizing choices, but we decided to go with the chana battura and mutter paneer (neither of us can say no to paneer...it seemed to taste familiar, like other paneer dishes I've had elsewhere). The chana battura was very interesting; we both loved the huge puffy bread shell it was served with, and we also agreed that the flavor profile of the chickpea stew was the best part of the meal. Both dishes also came with raita, which was bland but a nice way to add a little cool element to the dish. We also got samosas to start, which were like any other samosas I've ever had. To finish we got gulab jamun (or as my friend rightly calls them, "soul warmers"), which were everything I'd hoped for and chai (which was also solid). The place was pretty utilitarian atmosphere, and the service is not very warm but is professional...they were quick to take our order, and the food came out right away, but it took forever to get the check at the end of the meal. In all, it was a good meal for a decent value, but not the best place I've ever been. Still, I'd be happy to go back if anyone ever suggested it, and I would recommend it to others.

South Indian food at it's best. Masala Dosas and the South Indian Thali's are freaking awesome!

I have not visited too many vegetarian Indian food places, but this restaurant has delicious food. Especially the Spring Dosa. I always order Spring Dosas to eat at the restaurant or to go, when I have eaten a different dish...accompanied with spicy tomato chutney and a Mango Lassi. The staff are very friendly and will eventually remember you if you visit often. Especially if you order the same item :

These guys know their stuff. The sambhar here tastes just like back home. The Uttapams, rava dosa, sada dosa , coffee- everything was done right. They make the meanest rava dosa on this side of the world. But what they make better is tomato Rasam. OMG! It was so so so like the one I used to drink at a south Indian friend's place in India. Tangy, spicy and just what the doctor ordered on a cold winter day. It's great food at great prices with a friendly service. They bring you extra sambhar for no extra cost and the service is efficient and quick. I had to take out a star because we ordered a tomato rice, and it was nothing like a tomato rice. So I am thinking may be some of the other things on the menu may not be as good as the ones we tried that day. a Star less for the doubt !!

First time having Indian food... the service was great, very helpful and friendly but the food wasn't as good. I had the South Indian Thali and the Mysore Sada Dosa. The spices used in some of the soups that are included in the Thali are too pungent for my taste. I asked for brown rice instead of white rice, they didn't have it. They don't have many healthy alternatives. The Dosa was okay, not good enough for me to ever want another one. If you're not a fan of the spice cumin like myself, this food won't be your cup of tea.

Got a recommendation from a friend to try Udupi for dosas. We ordered some samosas, a Mysore Masala Dosa, and a Thali. We were all blown away by the spices and taste of every dish. I highly recommend this place. I can't wait to go back to try some other dishes.

I loved it! Absolutely 5 stars, no questions asked. The place was clean, nice, minimalist (in a good way), some great photos of India on the walls, etc. The servers and everyone working there were so nice, so responsive, so good. I can't say enough. And then there is a food. I went to order and the server was a little weak with his English. I had no idea what I was getting so I asked him to explain and he basically repeated the food items listed. I finally concluded when asking the difference between two dishes that one had dessert. Okay, good, now we're onto something! haha I went with the express lunch. I'm pretty adventurous and people on yelp raved about this place so I figured it had to be good no matter what. Quite honestly, I still don't know if I ate it "right" but I improvised and mixed the ingredients I felt went together well and figured it out from there! ha! So the express lunch comes on a silver platter... two breads- Chapati, which is a flatbread made on a griddle and papad, which is a thin crispy wafer. Then I had like 6 different containers from lentil to mixed rice to soups and a yogurt dish. And in the middle was an equivalent of a bowl of rice. To be perfectly honest, I would rather guess at what I am ordering then have the restaurant try to describe what it is and mess up the descriptions. In other words, no expectations is WAY better than some sort of expectation. Oh, and the express lunch came out in maybe a minute, if that. Appropriately named! How could you go wrong with this place? Nice interior. Great people. Phenomenal food.

I walked into Udupi Palace on a Wednesday afternoon with my parents. We were immediately seated. The staff was very polite and attentive. We got the lunch specials- Masala paper dosa with Idli and Vara. Absolutely loved it. I have to admit it ,the food had a very authentic flavor. Prices were very reasonable and food was very good. I want to go back and try the coconut dessert. Would definitely recommend this place.

Came here expecting to try a totally new cuisine. Never had vegetarian south indian food. Apparently Udupi is a chain restaurant and they also have it in India. Anyways, once walking in, the restaurant is clean compare to other places. The service is great, but not the best. The food comes out fast and its delicious. The menu has a big varieties of food and its hard to decide. Should definitely try the dosa masala and the fried idli. The dosa masala is what Americans called a pancake with potatoes inside. They have other types of dosa and they all sound delicious. Looking forward to my next visit to try other type of dosa. The fried idli it looks exactly like a donut but its so much healthier and its so good, especially dipped with the curry they provide you with.

Its namesake is a very popular fast food/ restaurant chain in India. But I did not find Udupi Palace, Artesia matching its peers in the orient. The food was good, and the service was near prompt. We were even impressed with the knowledge of Indian food the Hispanic waitress had! The portions were generous. Tastes OK, but nothing to give five stars and rave about. Parking is in the rear: You will have to enter 187th from Pioneer Bl, and take the first 'gully' to the right. It leads to the restaurant's rear parking lot.

I love this little casual restaurant on Pioneer Blvd. in Little India. The food is unusual - not your typical North Indian cooking, served in most Indian restaurants around here. This is home made South Indian food and it is delicious! Be sure to try a dosa - I like masala dosa, it is kind of like a giant crepe filled with potato curry. It is served with sambar and idli, a perfect combination. We also tried the Chana Batura, served with chickpea curry. It came out of the kitchen looking like a Dutch baby - puffy and big, and was it ever delicious. I am very picky about my coffee, and the coffee is delicious. As are the mango Lassis. For a welcome change from "normal" Indian food, be sure stop by. Also very family friendly. Friendly waiters and the service is fast and efficient.

This place is a restaurant and not a snack shop. So it's pricey. We had the thali (10.95) and a masala dosa (6.95). The food was very good but nothing to write home about. I wasn't blown away except for the price. And it wasn't as if the service was great. Because it was just average. Honestly, Surati Farsan and Ambala is the better deal and I would just go there. The ambiance and the service doesn't make up for the higher prices. So in that regard, I won't come back. But the food is very good.

I don't know why John S. had such a bad experience here... but for me, an Indian college student, I love coming here anytime I can! I have been eating here since it opened many years ago. The decor is nice and good enough for a family dinner or celebration such as a dinner. Its COMPLETELY vegetarian...so don't come here expecting meat..they'll be annoyed if you ask. It's a South Indian restaurant which isn't my home cuisine, but it's delicious nonetheles.. I love getting their utthapaam(grilled pizza-like dish) because you can make it as spicy as you want! it's quite yummy. My favorite dish there has to be the chana batura(chickpea curry with fried bread and onions). The flavors are so savory and fresh... you feel like you're in Hyderabad getting a fresh batch from a wala on the side of the street(in India, this is a good thing). Definitely recommend this place to anyone, Indian or not.

Great dosa place. Clean and excellent service. The staff was very courteous. We went there multiple times during our recent visit to LA. Food is very consistent good quality. Taste was great too. We tried dosas and uttapams would go back if in the area again. Keep it up guys.

First time at a Southern Indian Vegetarian restaurant and I enjoyed it. I've had Indian food before but never vegetarian... I forgot it was a vegetarian restaurant and asked the waiter if they have chicken curry LOL. The food was very yummy and healthy. I will go back for more when I'm in town.

Masala dosa is really good. Didn't really like the texture of the potatoes inside though. It had a mashed potatoe texture but I like it more chunky. Still very good. Thali was also delicious! It comes with a huge portion of rice and chappati and naan. Small but clean restaurant. Lassi was also very tasty. Highly recommend.

They serve south Indian food. If you have not tried it than this is the place to be. Don't mind the spelling you must try the regular dosa, fried idli, spicy rava dosa, Chana bhatura...And a none menu item is the spicy chilli cheese dosa. Food comes fast and is always filling.

I went here once... for an orkut friends' meet ( yeah we guys do meet strangers..:P) and I went there after having a hearty gujrati meal at ... so didnt order anything.... But as I was meeting people who were having snacks I ordered a chickoo shake for company.... and that was the worst mistake.... it was simply yuck... I love Chickoo shakes that we get back in mumbai... it is my favourite. Seeing it in Menu I was so happy and ordered it immidiately... I would have put a negative star here If I cud. It was way way below average. I tasted a piece of the vadas the friends had ordered and it had a bad oil smell to it. hmmm. I even heard from few friends the food isnt good... so I never went there again.... Seeing the review on yelp... I guess i will give it another try and see...if my review changes.. hmm

This was my first time eating in little India and I was very impressed with the food. I don't eat meat so I decided to try this place out. I loved the food and all the different spices they used. The place is not a circus so that is a plus and had many waiters to attend you. I will return here for sure and recommend it to others :)

As authentic as it gets. Reminded me of the Udipi restaurants I used to eat in back home in Mumbai. The service is excellent, the wait staff is very helpful and pleasant. This is my first visit to LA's little India. I came here with a couple of friends (one of which recommended the place). She ordered up a few items and we shared family style. We ordered: Mysore Sada Dosa Special Rava Masala Dosa Paratha Palak Paneer All of the items were very good - the Mysore had a nice kick to it and the Paratha was great to sop up all of the lefotver Palak and other sauces that came with the Dosas. I would like to try a couple of other places in the area before committing to a return visit but if it were the only player in town, I'd be back in a heartbeat! I do eat meat but I honestly didn't miss it after having such a delicious variety of flavours in such complex delivery methods :)

This is the first Indian restaurant I've been in since moving to So Cal and I'm glad we started here. The service was great, the staff was friendly when we had questions and they gave us a bowl of suckers to choose from when we paid the bill. We ordered samosas, channa masala & the masala dosa. The portions were perfect for two people to share. The samosas were nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The sauces that they served with the were delicious on their own, or mixed together if you wanted the sweet/spicy combo. The channa masala was seasoned well for those who don't like spicy and even better adding some of the samosa spicy dip into it. My first time having a dosa and it was really delicious, but come on, potatoes in almost anything is delicous :) I'd definitely come back here and try some other dishes off their menu.

Wow! I love Udupi and don't think I can ever get sick of it. Seems that everything that I've tried so far at Udupi is flavorful and perfect in spice. I typically order the Gobi Masala. Just wonderful :) I usually need meat in my food, but Udupi's flavor makes it so that it feels like nothing is lacking!! I tried their Paper Dosa Masala which is also really great. My friends order a few appetizers which i cannot recall, but boy was it delicious! First time I tried this restaurant was in 01/20/09, and since then i've visited the restaurant 6 times!

Wasn't expecting much, but the food is delicious. Well almost. Their Dosa, thaali etc. was really tasty and fresh. But we also ordered their "Vada Sambhar", which was fried lentil dough in sambhar curry. The Vada was really hard, and tasted stale. Ideally it should be slightly crunchy on the outside, and should be fresh. But this one was quite bad. Now normally, I've seen Indian restaurants not handling such complaints properly, but this restaurant immediately took it off the bill. +1 point for that A good place if you are on Pioneer, getting your Indian fix.

I had never eaten Indian food and my friend took me to Udupi Palace. We are both meat eaters and really didn't realize this was a vegetarian restaurant. She had been here is the past and loved the food and service. We were the only non-Indian people in the place which made me feel this was a good choice for my first Southern Indian meal. Today is Black Friday and a lot of people were in the restaurant and shopping in the area. We asked the very friendly waiter what a good choice would be because this menu is NOT easy to read unless you know your Indian food. Even as busy as he was (there were only two waiters taking care of the entire restaurant) he was very patient and made a couple of great choices for us. We both just drank plain water with the meal but there were a lot of unusual (to me) drinks to choose from. We started our meal sharing a plate of CHANA BATURA, a chickpea (chana) curry served with this fantastic, puffy fried bread (bhatura). We didn't really know how to eat this food so we broke pieces of this enormous puffy bread and put the chana into the bread like a taco. Honestly, this was the most fantastic, curry, spicy, little bit of diced red onion plate of deliciousness I have ever eaten. God, I thought I was in heaven! I noticed later by watching the rest of the people eat and what you should do is dip your ripped off bread into the curry dish sort of scooping up your bite rather than eating it like a taco like we did. The chana batura was accompanied by a refreshing, cooling, cucumber carrot dip that was a perfect with the spicy--but not hot--curry. This would probably have been enough food for the two of us but the waiter brought a combo plate, SOUTH INDIAN THALI which had Rasam, sambar, poriyal, daal, 2 vegetables of the day, special rice, white rice, chapati, papad, pickle, raita and payasam. Which basically was two little cups of soup--one rather good with curry flavor and the other with a lot of mild chili and a dirt flavor. Two curried veggie dishes with cauliflower, carrots something grean but all very delicious, three different type of rice, one white, basmati, one white with coconut milk (super delicious) and a third was curried rice. About three other 'mystery' cups were included in the giant round tray with little dishes all around and a weird pickly garnish that I ate but wish I did not. It was also served with one bread that was like a pita type bread and one was crunchy like a tostada type thing but probably made from garbanzo bean flour. There was also a yellow sweet custardy thing that I didn't care for nor did my friend. We ate this by putting the rice on our plate and pouring the different dishes over the rice and eating with bread and a spoon but I think again, you're supposed to dip the bread and chip things into the sauces but hell, we're white girls and didn't really know what do do. The waiters were both hovering around us and asking what we thought and I got to ask a lot of questions of them about preparation because I plan to learn how to make Chana Batura and eat it every day for the rest of my life. I totally LOVE Udupi Palace and HIGHLY recommend it.

Best South Indian restaurant in town! If you are into vegetarian food, or even south indian food (which in my opinion you have to get used to, especially if u are used to the typical north Indian restaurant), this is the perfect place :) Being Indian, I can tell you that its not easy to find a place that makes their sambar and dosa to perfection. Nearly everything on the menu is delectable. The service is nice- the wait staff knows my whole family by now if that counts ( :-) ). I think the food has a bit of a kick (which doesnt affect my tastebuds in any way), They have good combos for a good price. Their 'thali' has a lot of variety which is good-gives a good taste of different dishes. As for their dosas- they are fanstastic :) Their masala dosa and even their special rava masala dosa are outstanding. I enjoy every bit and piece. Their vadas/idli are really good too! If you have room, do try their mango shake- it certainly hits the spot. And if you have even MORE room, have their Mysore coffee. Its got milk, but the coffee blend reminds me if being in India- its got a very good aroma and flavor- not like the regular instant coffees or even any coffee house coffee here. (Oh! And they dont mind bringing you extra sambar... that too at no extra charge ;) How many Indian restaurants do that? :) )

Came here on fourth of July because my sister had been here with a friend and she enjoyed it. We ordered: Vegetable pakoras, Samosas, Channa Bhatura, Special South Indian Thali, Gobi Masala, Vegetable Masala. I think pretty much everything comes with a small side of boiled rice and a chapati which is nice. Unfortunately when our food arrived our the rice and chapatis were both cold, and the rice was very bland (which may not matter to some). The vegetable pakoras were not great, they were really over battered in besan so that's all you could taste, the samosas were pretty good. South Indian Thali was nothing spectacular but most of the stuff on it were good, i think i only didn't like one or two things from it. Channa Bhatura was pretty awesome, Channa masala was by far my favorite thing we ordered. It was delicious but it could of been spicier (for my taste). The Vegetable and Gobi Masala were okay but a bit creamy for me. Overall think the food is worth trying, specially if you're vegetarian and want to try Indian food. Prices are i think a little above reasonable but you do kinda get a lot of food, you could probably share! The only thing I really didn't like about this place is that it doesn't really have an atmosphere. It's pretty quiet inside, and it felt a bit awkward at times. The bathroom smelled REALLY bad.

I could have swore I did a review on Udupi Palace a long time ago. Anyway, the appetizer combo and the thali are awesome. The paper dosa is huge and is always a sight to behold. The clientele is Indian and you feel like the new kid on the block. I'm on the search for the best Indian food and Yelp has led me to some good eats. We can't wait to travel to the source so we have the real comparison. But this place will leave you with a savory memory.

Chai tea was not spiced enough and had too much milk. It tasted watery. Sadness. The crispy dosa was the best dish. Samosas were good, a little spicier than usual. Watch out for the chili pakoras -- HOT! They must have been made with super deadly jalapenos. Try a lassi to cool your burning tongue. Vegetable curry was blah. Usually I love anything with coconut milk in it but this didn't taste spicy or sweet at all. As with most restaurants around here, it could use a little revamping. They tried a little bit with the menu and some nice photographs on the walls, but some new tables and chairs and non-metal bowls and plates would improve the ambiance.

  • hana k.

Yelpers, heed my warning! Do NOT order the chili pakoras as your appetizer. Unless you like when "it tastes like burrrrning," don't do it. I am pretty immune to most spices, but dayum...the chili pakoras were fire in my mouth. To be honest, the first few bites were good. Then, the heat became nuclear. I still cringe over the memory of those pakoras. Never again! A much smarter choice would be the vegetable pakoras. I love fried things, and these had a wonderfully crispy batter. They are great with the accompanying chutney sauce. From their main menu, I've tried a few of their dosas, and I really like their Masala Dosa. My favorite item on their menu is the Gobi Masala: potatoes and cauliflower in a thick, rich curry. I was always one of those kids who hated cauliflower, and I still do. However, I love the way they absorb all the spices and herbs in this dish. It's not often that I crave Indian food. When I do, I head straight to Udupi Palace. It's the best Indian I've had in a long time.

due to another season of holiday indulgence and winter fattening.. or feasting, whatever you want to call it, i've set out to detox and eat a little bit lighter with less meat consumption. this diet has serendipitously brought me out to artesia for some vegetarian food. thank God for that, cause i found udupi palace. we sampled the paper masala dosa and the thali platter for lunch. though i've had dosas before, it always amazes me how this thin, crispy, crackly crepe made from rice and lentils comes out of the kitchen larger than traffic cone. there seems to be a 'mine is bigger than yours' mentality going on here, and udupi's version is pretty darn huge, perfectly crisp, and accompanied with masala, sambar, and coconut chutney. The thali platter came with an array of small steel bowls of filled with a variety of items (sambar, daal, rasam, poriyal, special rice, vegetables, raita, payasam). each dish was delicious and beautifully spiced and seasoned. my favorite had to be the poriyal, a dark hued mixture of beets and lima beans which was nutty, hearty, and satisfying. the meal was washed down with a couple of chais and a serving of gulab jamun (milk balls in syrup, theirs was a little too soft in texture). the service here is friendly and helpful (for those like me who are not so familiar with some of these dishes) and the food is excellent. udupi palace has really sparked my interest in the regional cuisines of india, and hopeful artesia has more establishments that are as good if not better.

Ambala Sweets, up the street, was our first addiction. Then we got introduced by an Indian friend to a new So. Indian restaurant, Udupi Palace. We LOVE the masala dosa. They don't have very many sweets options (so we just take food to-go at Ambala). The service is really good and the food's amazing. Very clean place. We love it.

I've been going to Udupi Palace for the past four years, and I think, and through checking with members of the Indian community, you will be hard pressed to beat this restaurant for what they offer in Southern California. Let me state early on that the restaurant specialises in Southern Indian food, which is somewhat different from North Indian cuisine (which I have found to be generally more common here.) There are three dishes we always get when we go: the idli, which are small rice/lentil cakes steamed, medhu vada which is similar to an idli, but deep fried rather than steamed, and the masala dosa, a rice/lentil crepe served with curried potatoes inside. All of these dishes are the best I've had anywhere, and unfortunately, my other options to find South Indian food have disappeared over the last couple of years. Other items have been unparalleled in quality including the Chana Batura (which I've also had listed on menus as Chole Bhatura, etc.), the Vegetable Korma, and Potato Bonda. Again, all of the utmost quality. The service is excellent. The waiters and waitresses are very polite, and are willing to answer any questions I have ever had and quickly bring what you ask for. I have never had to wait to be seated when I go, but I would imagine that during the day on the weekends, you would probably have to wait in order to get a table. There isn't really a parking lot, although there is parking around back, I've never had trouble finding parking on Pioneer Boulevard directly in front of this restaurant. This is a vegetarian restaurant. While I'm not a vegetarian, it's nice to find a cuisine (Indian in general) where you don't necessarily miss the meat through good protein substitution, spicing, and texture contrast. It can be relatively pricey for some wallets, (I usually get away at around $50 for three of us), but I feel the price to quality ratio is extremely good, as again, this isn't your run of the mill Indian restaurant, and their preparation is excellent to boot.

Be careful with your credit cards. I used my card and the total was $26 with tips and then when I checked my statement online it was $54. This activity has been reported by my friend also. I dug into it more and the reason being the owner of the restaurant lives in San Francisco and has 15 Udupi branches in the USA. THe waiters who work there are given complete authority and they are miss using to make money. Really be careful. The area where the waiters come from in India is a notorious place. Thanks much.

if you want to try some excellent vegetarian Southern Indian food, Udupi Palace is a must. The dosas are the best i've ever had. I've tried a number of them and they are all delicious. They have this rice called Besi Besi that is a wonderful compliment to any dish you order. I live in Long Beach and i drive all the way to Artesia just to eat here. There are a couple of good Indian restaurants in Long Beach but they are more expensive, Udupi is easy on the wallet as well. The atmosphere leaves much to be desired but go there for the food (and that is the only reason i gave it less a star; i'm big on atomosphere.)

Summary based on 1 dinner: --very good thali, with a lot of variety --good service --somewhat more expensive than nearby comparables, but not significantly so. Just squeaks into Yelp "moderate" at the bottom end. --easy parking in the evening --setting more like a restaurant than the coffee shop style of Jay Bharat --free wifi --GPS system thought it was Udipi Palace I tried this place for a comparison with Tirupathi Bhimas across and down the street, where I'd gone the night before on my quest to find a thali that was as good as the nearby Jay Bharat and as good value. So, it's better than Tirupathi Bhimas, but not as good as Jay Bharat. And no mini-thali option, which is more suited to the total amount of food I want to shovel in. Next time I'll go Jay Bharat to reinforce my baseline and then try one of the other Artesia options on another night.

I love this place. The best vegitarian resturant that I've been to. The paper dosa masala is just the bomb. And the gobi masala is just as good. I always start off with samosas first. Yum!

If you've got a craving for South Indian food, this is the place to go in Artesia. The dosas are good and I recommend the Bisi Bele Bhath after a long day of shopping along Pioneer.

Another pretty bomb southern vegetarian Indian restaurant. The paper dosa's are freakin humongous. I prefer getting a dosa rather than their lunch special which was average. Had a medhu vadai which was pretty good also. It came out like it was just fried(?) and pretty fulfulling.

Missing your mom's home cooking? This place satisfies my Dosa and idli craving every time. Their mango lasee is just perfect. My favorite is the onion masala rava dosa. Service is quick, and food is cheap. Their salty lasee could be a little less thick but not a deal breaker. I go back at least once a month.

Visited this place during a weekend. Ordered Poori which came drenching ( more than a tablespoon of oil inside!) in oil. When enquired, got a very rude reply from one of the waiters, "Poori is like that"!, who did not even wait to hear our response! He just walked away. Overall, the food and service was very bad. Will not go there again. And, here is a message to that waiter: "Poori, if drenching in oil, is not made right!"

"Damn, if I would have known, I would've ordered three of those things and not get anything else," exclaimed my homegirl, "B," after finishing the last of the masala dosa. Perfect. Okay, Yelpers, you hooked me up. I needed a new Indian fix in Little India and I got it. Here's what we got: Vegetable pakoras (breaded vegetables that are deep fried aka "Indian tempura"): Perfect. Not quite the mess like most Indian restaurants make them. The texture was unlike any pakoras I've ever tasted. They emphasized the vegetable here and not the batter. One of the best pakoras I've ever had. Mysore Masala Dosa (thin rice crepe topped with a hot chutney/sauce): Had some awesome Masala Dosas in Berkeley ages ago. This was as good as I've had it. It was crispy but then it melted into my throat after it graced my tongue. Bananas! "B" LOVED it for real. The hot chutney was great. I saved it to use as a sort of chili sauce on my rice dish later in the meal. Gobi Masala (potatoes and cauliflower in a wonderful curry sauce): A whole 'nother level of spicy. Not hot...just tasty as sin. "B" ordered this and I was a jealous beeyatch because it tasted better than my... Special Vegetable Curry (vegetables in a special curry...haha just kidding): Pretty good for what it was. The Mysore sauce from the dosa gave it the kick it needed. All in all this was a very pleasant surprise. I used to think that I was jaded when it comes to being blown away by Indian restaurants. I've had incredible Indian Food from Hong Kong to the Bay Area. This place gave me that "first date with someone you really like" feeling. Its been awhile, but I think I'm in love with a new Indian joint. The LOWDOWN Plus 5 stars for the awesome food. Period...and stronje!

its a good sign when you're the only non-indian at an indian restaurant. granted, i've only started eating south indian food last year, but the spinach cheese dosa i had here is the best i've had in my limited experience. dosas are delicate but large crepes usually filled with some combination of potatoes, vegetables and/or spices. what makes the dosa and other dishes we ate here so great is how well spiced and balanced the flavors are. sporting a crispy chewy outside and only available on weekends, the spinach was well seasoned with wonderful curry and great with bits of cheese. bf & i also shared the thali to try a little of everything, which comes with 2 veggie options--that day it was chana masala and gobi masala (both were good; the gobi was sweeter, while the chana had a tangy tamarind flavor)--, a delicious daal (one of the better i've had--most are usually a little bland--lentils with fennel and mustard seeds), sambar (a tasty lentil soup), rasam (broth cooked from lentils), poriyal which was spicy, turmeric-y cabbage, tomato rice, raita which is yogurt with chunks of cucumber, and payasam which appeared to be a sweet coconut milk flavored with saffron and chopped almonds. photo: flickr.com/photos/bluepu… we should have stopped there, but we had to have some baigan bartha ( flickr.com/photos/bluepu… ), a slow cooked eggplant curry dish with some kick. i was eyeing our neighbors' poori, which are these puffed bread things, and paratha, which are thicker tortilla like bread, and was intrigued by the coconut rice, so will have to return to try other things. everything tasted great, and though there was some heat, it wasn't unbearable, especially if you have a sweet and creamy mango lassi. service was friendly and fast. utensils are optional.

Ok. I LOVE dosas. I was introduced to it by my in laws (who are Sikh) and i have to tell you I love it! dosas are thin paper-like crepes that you can get potato filled or with other veggies inside if you'd like. whenever we'd visit the family out in Artesia we would ALWAYS stop by here to get dosas. I always order the butter dosas (used with ghee and not reg. butter) so it taste even more delicious. I normally ask for the masala on the side bc the potatoes are too filling for me. I always fill it with the sambar that it comes with and the mint chutney. Trust me when I tell you one dosa is good enough for one person BUT on occasions I do order two if Im really hungry. Also, You should try to idli and sambar. Its this fluffy white rice bread to eat with the sambar. DELICIOUS!!! In general, I love the food here and service has always been good. Talking about dosas, I think I will make my husband take me there next weekend! :)

I hadn't had much South Indian food before, so ordering between the many appetizing items was difficult, but ultimately not a problem since the food was great and the service EXTREMELY polite.

It was pretty good though the menu was limited--every dosa was a variation on the same theme. It made good leftovers.

Very good South Indian food. Service is good too and the place is clean and affordable. I have been here at least a dozen times in the last few years and I have liked everything I have tried.

Take-Out was so quick here. I got the #2 Lunch Special which is enough for 2 people for lunch and 2 Mango Lassi's. I love spicy food and I'm not an Indian food expert. Everything was vegetarian and good. It only took 5 minutes from ordering to me leaving the restaurant door. A little on the pricier side $18 for 2 for what I consider take-out/fast food. Without the Mango Lassi's it would have been about $10 or so, much better. I love spicy vegetarian food and this was very flavorful and I liked everything that came in the #2 Lunch combination. Let's not forget that this is a South Indian vegetarian restaurant. In other words you aren't going to find the traditional food of a North/Central Indian food restaurant. You can't rate on what they don't have (beer, meat) you gotta rate on what they do. The service was good, helpful, and communicative for my take-out order.

great prices, great service, giant portions. Now if you want to get a specific flavored Uttapam this is the place to go. I love the jalapeno and onions the best. Dosa's are great too. If you need some straight Indian all vegetarian dishes get to Udupi Palace

The food is great. This is the only place we go to for South Indian food. I tried the South India Thali on my recent visit. It was a lot of food and very delicious. You can not go wrong here. The Rava idlis are also very good.

It's worth the drive for fantastic food and very reasonably priced. The vegetarian dishes have so much flavor and not the typical indian food you get everywhere else.

The chana masala tasted strongly of salt. The rice was not basmati. If not for a good mango lassi, it would have been two stars for these guys

A few doors down from Shan and a completely different cuisine. This is an all vegetarian southern Indian place. Get one of the special thali meals, which includes small portions of various vegetables and dairy products in wonderfully spiced sauces and fried bread to mop up the sauce. The baigan bartha (spiced mashed eggplant), the bgala bhath (rice in a yogurt sauce with mustard seeds) and the vegetable korma are my favorite dishes. The batura bread, fried puffy bread bigger than your head, is delicious and comes with a small side of perfect raita. Closed Mondays. Large parking lot in back.

  • Aj P.

I love this place and don't mind driving the 30 minutes plus to get here. My friends love it when I drag them here. The special rava dosa is the bomb. A big beautiful dosa that must be 20 inches across and made with a blend of flours. I have yet to find this version of the dosa anywhere else. For comparison, order one of the other dosas also and share them at the table. The thali plate (a bunch of small portions of lots of things) is very good also. Friends seem to go for the sweet or mango lassi, but I think the salty version is the way to go with this meal. The cardamom tea is an interesting try also. This veggie food is filling and good value, and you'll feel good enough to still shop for Lil' India goods up and down Pioneer Bl.

Authentic South Indian cuisine, but I thought it was a little pricey relatively speaking. The food and service were good. I had the Udupi palace special with uthapam (although I prefer dosa I thought I'd give it a try). The Bhindi Masala was very flavorful with a good balance of spice.

I had a craving for Indian food. My husband suggested Rajdhani, but I thought we'd try something new. Thanks, fellow yelpers, for pointing me to Udupi Palace! He had the South Indian Thali, and I, the Udupi Palace Special. My dish consisted of idli and medhu vada (fried to golden brown perfection!), served with rasam and sambar, and my choice of any dosa or uthapam. Our waiter recommended the Special Rava Masala Dosa (made with cream of wheat), also served with rasam and sambar. All tasted very fresh. As always, I loved the stark differences in textures. The rasam had just the right spice, and the sambar was rich in coconut flavor. My husband's thali came with rice (which we never got to), chapati, and papad. The chapati was the weakest part of the meal. It tasted of uncooked dough. I liked the curries, especially the chickpeas (I am sure the selections change often), but I have to say that I like them better at Rajdhani. Oh, I loved the Payasam! I tried it for the first time, so I have no point of comparison. But it reminded me of two of the desserts that you can find at almost any Indian restaurant, Kheer and Gulab Jamun. I liked that it was not overly sweet. I should also mention that my husband loved the milkshake of the day, chikoo. He likened it to mamey, but with an extra caramel flavor. Service was incredibly cordial and friendly. It actually felt like they were happy to have us there? I liked the photos of food and people that decorated the walls. Otherwise, the space was non-descript. Our check was in the high $20s. Not too bad. I will go back for the dosas, and to try their uthapam.

I love this place. I wish I wasn't such a creature of habit and would order something other than the masala dosa, but why change? Great samosas too, and reasonable prices. Plus i can walk to the little grocery store next door and get Indian food packets i can take to work.

I've been a fan of South Indian fare for ages, and am constantly on the lookout for good dosas. Udupi Palace does them really well along with other traditional South Indian items like idllies and vegetarian curries. Service is attentive and the restaurant is super clean which is refreshing. I would recommend the mysore rava dosa, any of their paper dosas (MASSIVE) and their aloo masala (cauliflower in tomato curry sauce). Though I found their chai just average, the mango lassis a table over looked great, especially in the summer weather. Udupi is right in the middle of Little India which is convenient if you want to check out the other restaurants and grocery stores in the area.

This place has become our permanent Sunday spot. The waiters know us and give us great service. We've tried Pao Bhaji (as a new dish) and its fantastic! We end our meal with a nice Indian Chai/Tea. Such a great value for money place where you always feel like home!

This is one of our favorite inexpensive restaurants. We are creatures of habit and so we always order the chana masala and the masala dosa. I love the flavors in each of those dishes. The service here is good. There is one server in particular (can't remember his name right now) that is really conversational and he has given us a good background of knowledge about southern vegetarian Indian food. The setting is modest. Dinner is served on metal plates - nothing fancy. The charm for us is in the quality of the food and the reasonable prices.

Let's start by parking, love it, I always get parking right away whether i go in the morning afternoon or night, the restaurant is nice and clean and the climate in there seems to be just perfect, now the service! the waiters are very nice and helpful they seem to love their work unlike other people that hate their job and they take it all out on their costumers. This is the best part of my review the food, its just great and the price of it its reasonable. With your bill you get a Jolly Rancher treat.

This place does South Indian right, according to me, a person not from that place. But I've eaten at enough SI places to appreciate the quality, consistency and decent service at Udipi. But that might be because I stick to Uttapam and plain dosa, no idli/vada or masala dosa which only locals are likely to do right. Wait for your next trip to Bangalore/Madras/Trivandrum... for a good idli. In India there is a famous "chain" of restaurants called Udipi Cafe, usually catering South Indian (or is it Kannada only) food in all major cities. You can find decent food at decent prices at any of their locations. Its probably the only chain in the world not owned by a single organization, but serves the same menu and with the same consistency! UP is carrying on the same tradition with their 3 (?) locations in California. Location: Obviously, the heart of little India in LA area means you'll have plenty of choices for shopping and eating. Decor: Pretty decent and casual, nice window looking out to the shoppers. Food: Fantastic rasam (just slurp it so it hits the throat and opens up your sinuses), good sambar, pakoras and uttapam. Plus a decent filter coffee. Even their non-SI food is pretty good, defying my Great Theory of Indian Restaurant's (GTIR). And some of SI friends mumbled about it being ok, which is high praise according to me.

The service at this place is terrible. They serve warm water and you have to ask them for ice. We were there at around 4:30 in the afternoon and the place had like 5-6 people and that did not stop them from taking forever to attend to us. I raised my hand only for the waiter to look the other way, and after contemplating for a while to stay or leave, I literally had to shout, "Are you going to take the order or what?,"to get one of them to take my order. The food arrived in decent time and when it came time for check, it was back to the old game of waiting forever. The food was decent but it did not matter because they had already managed to ruin our movie plans for the afternoon. Left the place very frustrated and disappointed !!

What a wonderful restaurant to stumble upon! My friend (who is married to an Indian man) and I just stopped and decided to eat here on our drive back from Tustin to LA. And what a treat! The Gobi Masala was scrumptious, and we also ordered a delicious cauliflower dish. We enjoyed every bite, and loved the friendly atmosphere. Next time we go, we'll take more time to explore "Little India" and enjoy the wonderful neighborhood and authentic shops -- all filled with beautiful things. Artesia's is much closer than Mumbai.. and easier to get to! So take the trip down there... it's so much fun.

I'm sorry, Udupi Palace, you're getting a negative review--but let's ease into this. First, your service was relatively good and the head waiter friendly. The food came out quickly, and the price was low. Also, and I really mean this, the Indian crepes and pancakes were quite tasty, the pakora were flavorful, and the rose lassi was new to me. You do those things well. Here, though, is where the problems begin. Listen, Udupi Palace, you bill yourself as a completely vegetarian Indian restaurant. That means you don't have to worry about cooking meat--any meat. So a good 1/3 to 1/2 of all the Indian dishes you could potentially screw up are gone--not applicable. So, Udupi, it is then your duty--your sacred freaking duty--to make your vegetarian Indian dishes absolutely deliciously. Sorry to say, but you don't. Everything we tried was oooooo-kay. Nothing was inedible, but nothing was really good either. The chana masala, a mainstay of Indian vegetarian, was bland and pasty, and not very red, which is to me a bad sign. The rice was borderline pretty bad: soggy, damp, and thoroughly un-Indian. And you know what else you did that sucks? It's actually what you didn't do--you didn't ask if we wanted mild, medium, or spicy. I don't know if you fail to do this for everyone, or if you just assumed we were a group of white people who can't handle spicyness. Perhaps you didn't notice the Lebanese girlfriend, but we eat it spicy, man. Other strikes against you include: -No pappadam (crackers) and pickled vegetables to start. -The lassis were very small for the price--who makes such a small lassi? -No beer. You guys, I'm seriously, WTF. Granted, Udupi, you are the only completely vegetarian Indian place open at night in Artesia. But I'm not a veggie. I can go to several other Indian places in the immediate vicinity who will make veggie and non-veggie dishes better than you. And if I or someone else really has to have Indian vegetarian food, we can wait until daylight to drop in on Ambala Sweets. I'm sorry, Udupi Palace, but you get two stars. If you'd had excellent food with crappy service or atmosphere, I would have docked stars for that, but since you had crappy food with decent service and atmosphere, I can't kick you up a star or two. It doesn't work in reverse.

Trying to find good South Indian food around Southern California? You should definitely check out Udipi. They rock. Great ambience and atmosphere. Their food is great - and for those that want north indian food - they serve Gujarati thalis. Haven't tried the thalis, but highly recommend their uttapams and masala dosas. LIke their lassi's too. Miss those days when this was a short drive...if only the could clone themselves and put one in the IE somewhere. Note: The chefs change from time to time so that changes the taste of the food, but the recipe should be the same..been a couple months since I've gone...

I first tried this place 5 years ago. I live pretty close but didn't make it out here again until last month. I ordered the chana masala bhutara (garbonzo beans with a huge bread) and wasn't impressed as I first was when I came here. I also got an order of the samosas. The flavor isn't very intense but the service makes you want to come back. All of the servers are helpful and friendly. Try the green sauce! I don't know what kind of herb it is, but it's wonderfully spicy!

Living only 10 minutes away is a blessing! My favorite is the Channa Batura. The bread is ... how do you say ... THE BOMB! This HUGE, fluffy deep fried bread is ... how do you say... DELICIOSO! Muy! hehe. This is a must for those that would like to experience Indian food that is different than your typical (but still awesome) Paneer and Khorma and Tikimasala stuff. Oy! I only have given this a 4, because i have heard that there is Batura that is even better... I will let you all know. :P (added) Ok.. so get this.. after writing the above... i just had to go ... like now. So i went. DAMN. The other place that my friend Ankur mentioned to me was Ambala Dhaba or Ambala Express. On Pioneer also. 18413 Pioneer Blvd. That review is next. I will let you know. Burp!! DAMN that was good!

For South Indian food, this place is tops. Dosa, chana masala, you name it, they do it, and do it pretty well. You won't leave hungry or with a huge void in your wallet. The staff treats you like royalty (it is a palace, after all). Very nice for groups. Mango lasse (sp?) is a must try.

i was giddy to try this place, and it was my first foray into little india in artesia. unfortunately, i got an allergic reaction immediately and had to leave. the server not only assured me when I placed my order that there were no nuts in the food, but continued to make this claim even after i got sick. will my faith in indian food be restored? we'll see.

20 years ago when i was a student at CSUF my friend and tried to find a good indian restaurant in artesia. we always found 'good' food but never anything amazing. what a difference yelp makes. the wife was looking for a place to celebrate (with vegetarian food) after her graduation (Masters Social Work, yeah wife unit!) and she found udupi palace. i hadn't had any southern indian food, but it amazing! like most good indian meals you need to go with 4+ people to try a little bit of everything. since it was a celebration i didn't quite pay attention to exactly what we were eating and we are looking forward to go back again soon. already i know its well worth the drive from los angeles for such a fine meal.

i had been meaning to eat here because of all the positive yelp reviews, so today i ate lunch here with a couple of my friends. we had samosas and the chili pakor?(don't remember the full name). they were really good though! i ordered the mysore masala dosa, and it was really good! i had a bite of the spring dosa, and the eggplant curry... everything was really tasty. the waiters were really helpful in deciding what to order, and the service was fast and great. clean setting too... most definitely going here again.

Been here off and on since it opened years ago. Food is ok here. Very hot spicy soups if you are into that. Don't particularily like the tin cup bowls that each food item is placed into. Kinda makes my feel like a guinea pig or rabbit in a cage. No atmosphere to this place and the prices are not cheap.

  • Shameemah M.

went here for lunch ordered the south indian thali and the madras lunch (which came with medhu vadha or idlis and a choice of dosa). we also ordered mango lassi to drink. the thali was pretty good - it was my first time having thali and i was surprised that i liked it as much as i did. the medhu vadha is like an indian fried doughnut (not sweet!) and it was really good with the chutneys. my little brothers were with me so for the dosa so we ordered a cheese one which had pepper jack and sharp cheese. very interesting and tasted like a quesedilla. the service was decent for an indian restaurant. one of the female waitresses had an attitude which bothered me. also, the waiters were standing around the cashier looking at everyone eat, which was annoying. and why were the mango lassis $3.25 each? waaay too much! you can get it for like $2 at other places on artesia. the bill for lunch came to like $32 which i thought was a lot for indian food (but maybe im comparing it to prices at surati fursan?). all in all - it was okay i probably wont go back but i liked thali and i am definitely going to try different thalis at the other indian restaurants on pioneer.

Fantastic dosas. We also enjoyed an uttapam and the mango lassi. Only the eggplant (bengan bharta) was disappointing. Nonetheless, 5 stars for the extraordinary dosas.

  • Smriti Y.

Yes I know my rating is starkly in contrast with most of the other reviewers . I just didn't like the food. We'd the lunch special which gives you idli/vada and dosa/uttapam. Between my husband and me, we'd idli, vada and two kinds of dosas. We didn't like even one of them. Maybe that's because I've had south indian food in southern India so I compare it with authentic south indian food. The idlis are supposed to melt in your mouth, but even though it was soft it was no where close to what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be radiant white but it had a creamy color, why?!?! The vada was not crisp, only the exterior was made crisp by adding baking soda. The "masala" of the masala dosa and the chutney that they spread on mysore masala dosa was just awful! I've never had a dosa in my life that I didn't like except this one. Yes I'm that disappointed with this restaurant and this was despite the fact that I was very hungry when I went there. The food is cheap and in huge quantity but that doesn't help if it doesn't taste good. I find our good old "Madras Cafe" in San Diego much better than this. The good: price, quantity and service. The bad: food.
