Rice was overlooked and chewy and the teriyaki sauce was just kind of weird. The low carb bowl was pretty awesome though. I was glad it was an option. The veggies were okay.. The spicy teriyaki sauce was also kind of blah. Think Panda Express quality maybe a step up.

I'm reading the complaints and not agreeing with all the negative reviews. This is a healthy alternative so the chicken breast I had was plain as can be and maybe boiled. That made it the perfect receptacle for the sauce they pour on top of the rice bowl. I got peanut sauce after the person taking my order offered it. They even sprinkled some peanuts on it which was fantastic! The brown rice was typical in that it never sticks together and makes a nice bed for the other stuff. I added veggies and they appear to be a frozen medley. They were hot but lack that fresh feel and taste. As far as value the large was too much for me so I'll get a small next time and maybe some sushi. They do need to improve their hot sauce selection with only Tabasco. They offer a tiny side salad for 9 cents. No wifi. Clean restaurant. Good service. Brewed iced tea.

No star for this restaurant... Total waste of 8 bucks. This place has bland tasteless food. I had the chicken breast teriyaki with rice noodles bowl and their self proclaimed famous salad with a soda. Even the soda is flavorless! Needs to pay attention to the co for the soda. Might as well be selling just plain top ramen with no seasoning. I wont be back and this food just sucks

Wish I read the reviews. Steam rice was good. Chicken tastes boiled and thrown on rice. No seasoning. Spicy teriyaki was missing the spicy and the hot sauce they have is Tabasco. Tabasco! Gyoza was good. With meat and rice bowl franchises on the rise, this place needs a change or will go under. Love the small businesses but I won't be back.

This place was the best when i lived there in 96-99 did they get bought out? Its a shame

If you can eat dry chicken with dry rice with a minuscule amount of sauce, then this is the restaurant for you. The accompanying salad was wilted iceberg lettuce with another tiny bit of dressing- pure yuck! Will not be going back!

The hubby and I had not ate here since our dating years. Before driving back to Phoenix we decided to reminisce old times. We were very dissapointed. We remember Papa-san being the most delicious teriyaki. Unfortunately, this visit was horrible. The quality of food was bad and the flavor was beyond bland. The service could use some more smiles and gestures of appreciation. We had to wait for chicken as they ran out. All in all, our visit definitely did not meet our expectations. This place needs a revamp asap.

Very confused someone seems to be upset about the salad on here. Go for the rice bowls! Spicy teriyaki with brown rice, always a winner. And *tropical* iced tea. The dessert bars are also worth an occasional taste. And it's absolutely worthwhile to get a punch card for a free bowl down the line.

yuk! me no like.......again. I wasn't driving so I had to go in. I had some sushi. boy! I paid a lot for so little and bad tasting. they didn't even have packets of soy sauce to take out. But , people do like the place; the guy that drove me and cops. It was quite busy. I won't go back, depend on that. You can't make me. twice is enough.

Clean restaurant with friendly service but the food was seriously lacking. Poor quality, poor taste and poor presentation. Panda Express is a much better option if you are craving an Asian dish.

Not impressed. Ordered a rice bowl with terryaki beef. It was more like roast beef with terryaki sauce. Not bad but definitely underwhelming. Was hoping for better. =(

Just saw their ridiculous commercial. If you are showcasing your "best" for a television ad maybe ditch the styrofoam. Although it is appropriate.

Surprisingly enough, I enjoyed it....I was told not to have a high expectation of this place and that might have been the reason why I didn't hate this place. I had teriyaki beef bowl, it was pretty OK.

This is the reason why I like local Yuma restaurants more than anywhere else. I've been to similar restaurants in greater Phoenix and Nevada, and there is really no comparison. Papa San is one of the few places out there that can get me to come back so frequently and have a consistent level of quality every time I order a meal. The "Papa sized" teriyaki chicken bowl is the bread and butter of this establishment and it's kept them in business for a number of years now. The sushi here should not be underestimated either! It's much less expensive than the competition and equally (if not more so) tasty if you ask me. Papa San has become an instant favorite to everyone I've brought with me and I'm pretty sure it's going to remain the most well enjoyed local gem for Japanese food.

I finally went to Papa San for lunch. I figured I'd give it a try while my wife was at work since she's not as great a fan of Asian food as I am. I was completely dissatisfied with the meal. I had a sweet n sour chicken rice bowl and it was easily the worst I've ever eaten. The only positive about the food is that the chicken is not fried. It tasted burned, the rice was gummy, the flavor of the sauce was mild and almost non existent. I'd like to try the teriyaki but I work too hard for my money to throw it away.

tried to give it a second chance... chicken looked like someone chewed it and poured it on my plate.

I stopped by today to try them out after a 4 year hiatus. Glad to know it's just as crappy as it was four years ago. Pretty much ordered the same thing as before. All white chicken bowl with veggies and brown rice. The rice was the best part of the whole thing! The veggies were waaayyyy overcooked and the chicken was dry as Yuma is. Not to mention it had absolutely no flavor. I'm pretty sure they put a whole bunch of sauce on their teriyaki bowls to cover up for the fact that it sucks. With a drink the total was a little over 8 bucks for some horrendous food. Go to Panda Express... same price, more food and (gasp) it's actually half way decent! Also, I love how people justify that since it's Yuma it's ok. It is not! This place sucks, avoid it.

So Papa San (aka Bill Gresser) is out and there is now a new owner. I've been somewhat of a regular since 1998. Never a huge fan, but it's okay food and it's not dripping in grease like every other place in Yuma. I like the boring "lettuce only" salads, they used to be only 9 cents. Today was our last visit to this landmark. We ordered two No. 1 combos to go...checked the bag before leaving and noticed one salad was missing and no dressing for the one. Plus no sauce for the one which was ordered "spicy sauce on the side". They apologized and got my items. Got home to no Sushi for one of the combos and there was definitely a Thai Peanut sauce taste on one order. Thank God we're not allergic to peanuts!!! We went at 7:30 and both orders looked like they scraped the bottom of the pan to complete the orders...the chicken was mostly crumbs and slightly on the crispy side. To say the least, we were sadly disappointed. Expected a little more for $18.76 for two meals.

This is by far one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. It is very healthy and NOTHING comes from a bottle...all made on site from scratch! Aside from being nutritious, they give you a ton of food for the price. The sushi and salads are the bomb also. Trust me this is a Yuma institution. Five stars!

  • Eric N.

I wasn't a big fan of the noodle dish I had here. It was a little goopy and not very hot. I'll try the salad next time.

This places boasts of having authentic Teriyaki sauce, made on site by a real Japanese person. The sauce is different than any other I've ever had. It's on the salty side. I definitely can taste Oyster sauce! I've had the Teriyaki Chicken bowl with both Dark and White Breast Meat. Though dark meat absorbs flavor better and stays moister than chicken breast. This is not the case here. I'd have to say I prefer my Teriyaki Chicken bowl with White Breast meat only! The Yaki-Soba is not good. They have miso soup, made in a styrofoam cup, using hot water from a thermos and I'm guessing instant Miso soup dry mix. Bleh! So generic. I guess this is what you get for "Japanese" food in Yuma. lol So if you're looking for an ok bowl of Teriyaki Chicken in a quick fix, 'cause you're too lazy to google a recipe and cook yourself, Papa-San is the place to go.

The salads are where it's at, here. The Papa's Turkey Salad is a BIG meal, and is delicious- a nice pairing of sweet and savoury. Everybody in this town seems to be addicted to the 9-cent salad. It's a bit more expensive if you don't order a rice bowl, but it's still cheap either way, and the ginger dressing is great. Overall, the place is clean, the staff is pleasant, and the restaurant is a nice alternative to the burgers or mexican food you normally find in town.

I love papasans rice bowls. The spicy beef teriyaki bowl is my favorite! It's a healthy and inexpensive choice when you're looking for a quick delicious meal.

HORRIBLE!!!! if you want chicken and rice in a bowl drenched in a salty sauce, then you should come here! because of places like this, people think japanese food taste like this, but it is def. far from it! you have to see who works there. if you want real japanese food, then make sure that a japanese person is cooking it! othere than that, i would say that this place is the americanized thought of japanese food.

hated it my first few times eating it... then it grew on me, or maybe my taste buds were out of whack from all that az heat. too much sauce, too salty and usually smelled in the restaurant. i doubt ill ever go back for a papa san bowl during my visits

I used to go here for a quick lunch now and then, I usually ordered the spicy beef with brown rice. It was quick and tasted OK. I quit going there after I ordered some food to go for 4 people and needed to take some condiments back with me. The person at the counter told me that I would be charged 25c for each small container. I told them that this was outrageous and since I only had a credit card, why didn't they tell me about this fee when I paid for my meal? I told them that I wanted them to give me the condiments or give me my money back for the food. I got a refund for the entire meal and left. On the way out to my car, I saw the owner in the parking lot and told him I was disappointed and why. He just said that's his policy and walked off. What an ass. This has been a couple of years ago, I still haven't been back there and I still tell friends not to go to this place. Hope the 25c fee is worth it for these guys.
