Good mexican food at okay prices. Nothing too amazing but definitely a step up from del taco or taco bell or any other bottom shelf mexican

My girlfriend and I took a day trip down to Yuma from San Diego. After a great visit at the Territorial Prison Museum, we asked someone there for a recommendation for a good margarita. He told us about Chretin's. We looked it up on GPS, which took us to the old location in a fairly scary neighborhood. Someone had spray painted on the wall the address of their new location. We arrived to the new place all done up fancy like a Chevy's off the main drag on Arizona Ave and 16th. So the low down is that the Margarita's were primarily sweet and sour and tiny. I asked for another one light on the sweet and sour, but she made it exactly the same! Order the Margarita if you really don't want to drink any alcohol! Worse yet was the food. Decent shredded beef on the Machaca, but flavorless rice and totally inedible, bland beans accompanied by one flour tortilla! They must microwave and reheat the rice like at hotel banquet. My girlfriend is from the south and I've never seen her not finish beans!! We nicknamed the place "Cretins". Do not go here.

LOL! "east coast crappy"! thanks for the laugh. My ex and my daughter went to this place right after they took over the old Johnny Carino's (Italian). The interior was a noticable step up from their digs off of 15th ave., but at least that place had, I guess you'd call it, charm. Anyway, WORST dining experience ever! Now, i'm gonna try and condense this, so bear with me: We were seated, waited about 3 min. then our waitress came and took our drink and app. order (cheese dip), 5 min. later we had water but no chips (chips were not a part of the app.) finally after another 5 min. had passed, I just accosted the first employee there and asked them if i could get my table's chips and cheese dip. These Wal-mart store brand chips came out about 4-5 min later, they never even saw the heat lamp. Where are we sitting now about 18 minutes? ok, we're tracking, another 10 min. later the waitress took our food order, and I kindly reminded her that our cheese dip was M.I.A. she apologized and meandered off somewhere. We started looking at the other patons, and noticed that they were all pissed off! I just laughed to myself. Still no cheese, really? cheese.....still NO CHEESE?! So, the waitress comes over and tries to pawn off someone elses meal, which was not the same, but fairly close, which she explained was orderd but the patron left! Holy whack unfathomable pajama pants! my hunger punched me in the face and I acquiesced. Still no cheese and 10 mins later she brings me "the plate" This wasn't even close to what I ordered! I declined and said I wanted my origional order and my flippin' cheese dip. Straw wafts in the breeze zig-zagging left and right then finally lands on the camel's hump and sends it straight through to fucking China! Total time:45 min. Total cheese: nada eff this place

Let's start with the good; attractive setting, nice atmosphere. Ok, I got that out of the way. This restaurant was recommended by a friend, an old timer who had eaten there years ago and loved it. Maybe the "good ol' days" weren't as good as he remembered. The service was friendly, but s.l.o.w. It took over 45 minutes to get our food after we ordered. My daughter ordered a plate of lettuce; at least that's what she received. I believe it was supposed to be taquitos, but it was actually cold chips buried in lettuce. I ordered the chicken fajitas. I hate to compare San Diego with Yuma, but here when you order fajitas, they come out sizzling on a hot pan. At Chretin's they came out lukewarm, on a platter with coagulated beans and dry rice tinted red. They give you one HUGE tortilla rather than a few smaller ones. The tortilla did taste "home made" though. The margaritas were just ok, small and definitely from a mix. My friend ordered a hamburger and asked for medium-rare, it came out well-done and, according to him, not very good. (But honestly, who orders a hamburger at a Mexican restaurant anyway?) Even if the food was good, I would've thought it was overpriced. I promise that next time I go out to eat in a different city I will check the Yelp! reviews, they are spot-on in this case.

I believe Chretin's is under new ownership, so it may be worth another look. I used to get the lunch buffet during work lunches (quick and easy), which was very disappointing for someone who didn't get beef or chicken - I'd get lettuce and rice with veggies when they had them. Then Chretin's updated their menu and ....AHHHH! (the sound angels make when the clouds part)....fish tacos. Like another reviewer mentions, they are not greasy, and they also have a hot/tangy sauce on them that can be strong but it basically good. I have also had the potato tacos (name?) and they were very good. I like the service as well. The hostess is always cheery and professional, and our waitresses seem to have been there a while and are friendly. Apparently gone is the place of old, maybe pined for in older reviews, and which apparently had a lot of military paraphernalia. The new Chretin's, however, seems to be knocking some homers and - interestingly, John McCain told a military friend of mine, "I love Yuma. I love to eat at Chretin's when I go there."

Not as terrible as other reviews suggest, but certainly could do better. I had a shredded chicken burrito and while I like a nice mix of dark and white meat, this one was about 60/40 in favor of the dark. A little heavy for my taste. Shredded beef taco was OK and the kids' chicken enchilada was completely consumed. Bottom line is that it's pretty cheap, very mild and generally boring.

A nice setting, interior, very bland mediocre food. Sonoran Mexican food (which is what you get in Yuma) is bland anyway, but this place blands it down even further. Portions aren't large, and the price is higher than many Mexican restaurants in Yuma of better quality. This place is living off its reputation, which may have been well deserved at one time, but isn't now. Not a horrible place, just bland and over priced, with mediocre service.

Place was nice. Service was quick and friendly. Food was good and cheap. $1.50 draft dos equis = awesome. Don't know what everyone is bitching about.

Absolutely sad. They used to be a staple and local favorite for years! Ever since they moved from the original location it has declined in taste, service and value. The food is just gross. Enchiladas taste like a frozen dinner. Rice is bland. Just a really sad experience. It seems they chefs have catered to the elderly and snow birds- since, to them- food is food. It's no longer authentic and no longer good. Save your money and go to Mr Gs or Eduardos or Mi Rancho for authentic Mexican food with flavor.

Ate there last night while passing through Yuma. Forget about worst "Mexican" ever... my fiancee has yet to remember a meal out of any genre we've ever had that was worse. She got enchiladas, they were horrible... so I guess we should view that fact that they were very small as a blessing. She likened the spanish rice to Uncle Ben's. I got the chimichanga with chile verde. It tasted like potted meat... though, the fiancee gave it a taste and thought they served me dog food. She couldn't manage to swallow it. I was starving, so I ate almost all of it... and immediately regretted that decision. On our way out the fiancee noticed a guy at a table near us pull a toothpick out of his burrito. Not a toothpick sticking up in the middle with a paper mexican flag on it... but a toothpick hidden in the contents of the burrito ready to damage your mouth if you're not paying attention. On top of the food being atrocious, the service was S.....L......O......W.... perhaps they were giving us ample opportunity to escape. I think if we had stopped at a street taco stand, the guy prepared a taco for me, dropped it on the ground, a dog pissed on it, then I ate it... I would've been more satisfied with my meal. How this place has supposedly survived since the 30's is a wonder.

Pretty mediocre Mexican food in a city chock full of Mexican places! Chips and salsa were good - lots of pepper in the salsa, which added an interesting flair. The house specialty 1946 chimi was less interesting, however. Pretty bland and mushy. But certainly a ton of food! ...Very friendly, but very slow service. We weren't I'm a hurry, so it was okay, but beware if you're pressed for time.

Place looks like one of those On the Border mexican chains from the outside, especially when you approach from the IHOP side of the parking lot. Cute, fun atmosphere on the inside with rather friendly service. Salsa wasn't bad, and they were quick with refills of chips and salsa. Food was alright, with some choices I don't see as much in the Phoenix area (fried bean tacos). Food was rather average, and there were a lot of empty seats in here.

If you are looking for authenticity and great service avoid this place. The food reminds me if you go and buy one of those lunchable taco things and make your little tacos, well thats what it is. It taste very cheap and like there was little effort put into the seasonings. The salsa is pace picante sauce I believe and the cheese is velveeta. Just avoid this place.

Absolutely agree with the other reviewer. Crappy Mexican. Like east coast crappy. We visited the old location with all the war posters/pictures that was in the back of someones house it seemed. Salsa was good. That was about it. I can't believe a local recommended this place to us! He must have disliked my jokes about his girly long hair or something. Do yourself a favor and visit another place, like Mi Rancho down in old town.

Has improved a lot with the recent management changes. Food is solid and a great place for happy hour. Will for sure go here every time I'm in Yuma.

I have been all over the Western United States and have tried many different Mexican Restaurants, but this is my favorite of all. I like there enchiladas, they are very good. If you go there on a week day during lunch time they have a buffet for $7. They are all hand made tortillas and chips. Under the original owners the food was a little better, but it is still the best. If you are looking for a place to eat in Yuma, AZ this is the place to eat. Plus it is right off HWY 8.

My mother and I ordered Chile Relleno. My dinner came with a salad so I ordered blue cheese dressing and an appetizer of stuffed jalapeños. Mom had a plate of chorizo with cheese. It was absolutely delicious... and plenty, so we took some with us for later. I had a Corona, super cold and there was nothing about the place that was not delightful. I think those who have done poor reviews were thinking amerimexican food, rather thatn tasty Mexican-Mexican delicious. We are both from Mexico and pretty demanding as we love cooking. Trust us if your palate is tolerant to different foods. Great place!

I finally went to Chretin's and found out for myself why the other reviews are so bad. In a nutshell: the service is unprofessional & sub-par and the food is mediocre [at best]. It took over 5 minutes to get waters on a Sunday evening. After asking the hostess to turn down the Antarctic breeze that blew on my table, she said "Ummm" and walked away. I asked the waitress to fix the A/C and she said it was lowered, which was not true. My fajitas were served with two small tortillas (far from an appropriate amount - see attached photo). I asked the waitress for more while I was already on my second one, which took another 5 minutes while the Antarctic breeze cooled my food in the meantime. Admittedly, the refried beans already had a solid coating on them when the dish arrived. When the waitress returned, she had one tortilla for me which was nearly the size of a women's basketball. After we finished out meals, the manager made her rounds to our table to ask how we were doing. Candidly, I told her about the unsatisfactory service, A/C, and tortillas and that I anticipated that I never intended returning after my first visit. Instead of apologizing and correcting the situation, she attempted to justify the poor service. If you check the majority of my reviews, you'll see that I'm NOT an overly-pessimistic business basher. However, I don't feel any remorse in giving Chertin's one star or adding it to my "Worst of Yuma" list.

the machaca dinner is a delight. Make sure to get it with the egg. Mix it all up with the beans and rice, then cover it in salsa. Tear that tortilla and go to town. BOMB! The nachos are great too! I've been going to this place for 20 years. I've never been sick and have always left full and happy.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
