I love this place. Every time someone visits me in Houston, I ask them to bring me Chile Pepper. When I went back to Yuma last week for the first time in 5 years and told them I was buying lots of food to bring back to Texas, they gave me extra salsa (which is not something they always do). When my son spilled soda 5 minutes before closing time, all of the wonderful ladies reassured us that it was no big deal. All-in-all, still great food and great service. The reason I gave 4/5 stars is because of the prices. I know it's not 1995 when I used to get bean and rice burritos for $0.75, but almost $4 is a bit much. A dozen rolled tacos (which are still the best) is over $7. Again, it's pricey compared to when I used to live in Yuma, but I have to admit it is worth it. I still love the food and highly recommend this place to anyone that wants to try one of the top 10 burritos (the bean and cheese burrito, I believe) in the country!

It was tasty, and most of the menu was relatively inexpensive, but personally I wasn't a huge fan. Apparently everything is made in house, such as the tortillas, but there just wasn't enough to wow me. They close hella early and I thought the portion sizes were really small. I've been told the rolled tacos are unbeatable but haven't been back since. I'd go back, but definitely will not be a frequent flier.

They do a great job for their menu staples. Rolled tacos are hot and meaty. Bean and cheese burrito is creamy in a great tortilla. Green chili con carne is not chili verde. It's a meaty burrito with chunks of green chili and onion. My only complaint is its a smidge small but the prices are good so that counteracts it. The place hums with activity but still remains clean and functional.

I give this rating because I feel like I shouldn't have to wait 30 mins for carne asada. It's dinner time and they should've been better prepared. And it was cold!

If you're rolling through Yuma (as we were on the way to San Diego) this place is a great stop for some good grub. I had read about it as being one of places to get one of the top 25 burritos in the country, so I had to give it a shot. Its a little bit of a ways from the freeway but it is most definitely worth the drive. The tortillas are so fresh and smell so good. They have the best bean and cheese burritos, using very stringy cheese. My girlfriend ordered a quesadilla and she couldn't get enough of it, raving about how it really hit the spot. This place left such an impression on us, we hit it again on the way back and it was just as good the second time around!

so I grew up eating chili pepper and mr g's and lets just say when I moved to Texas my heart was still at those places lol I usually get the bean, rice and cheese burritos with 4 taquitos and a side of fries. they have this homemade salsa that tastes like someone's abuela has been cooking it for hours in the back. the good thing about this place is that they are SUPER inexpensive and they always are quick to get your food to you. not going to lie, I did have my dad ship some chili pepper to my family in Texas. it wasn't fresh like if I was there but damn it was still great lol you wouldn't be disappointed I can tell you that!!!!!

Nothing special when it comes to there plates or wanting to go have a nice "sit down dinner". If you are like me though and you can love a place simply based on they have one item that no other place compares The Chile Peppers bean and cheese burritos are a must have. Their salsa is like tomato juice with some spices so again nothing special. Especially coming from a place that is so known for tacos and Mexican food in general. The Bean and Cheese burritos though. They make for 3 of the 4 stars!

No joke, this really happened... Me: Hi, can I have a... Cashier: No, you can't order here Me: What? Cashier: This is call in orders only, you can't eat here either Me: Wait, what? So why do you have a menu here and why are there tables and chairs here? Can I just call on my cell phone and order something and then pick it up here? Cashier: If you want to dine in, that's next door Me: Oh...ok Cashier: You can get there by passing through the restrooms *points at restroom doors Me: That's ok, I'll walk outside and go around the restrooms, thanks though. *Next door Me: Hi, can I order the soup? Cashier: No, that's only on Wed and Fridays Me: Ok...can I have that combination plate? *points at the menu Cashier: No, that's only before 2pm Me: Ok....can I have a vegetarian rolled taco? Cashier: No, we don't do that Me: Ok....can you tell me what we CAN order? Cashier: A tostada or a burrito only. WOW. Really?!?! Can you have any MORE restrictions? Oh my goodness! It was really exhausting trying to find something to order! Then when the food came, they FORGOT our burrito! We also ordered chips which came with "salsa". I say "salsa" because it wasn't really salsa. It was watered down tomato juice with spices in it. Everything we ate was SUPER salty, I had to drink so much water to neutralize the saltiness. I'm really disappointed with the food AND the restrictions at this place. Aren't you suppose to try to please the customer? I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll ever come back here.

Bean and cheese burritos with the salsa: simple brilliance. Do not come to this place looking for a sit-down, gourmet, restaurant-type experience. This is fast food by and large. The ingredients are flavorful and just pop when you dip in the salsa - which is not more watery than thick. I personally don't care what the consistency of a salsa is as long as it tastes good and when combined with the burritos, it's perfect.

    (5)
  • Ann R.

Salsa is like red water, with no flavor. Red Chile meat was like hamburger and watery like soup. Didn't bother to even finish...what a disaster. Must cater to winter visitors from Canada.

The only thing good about this place is.....it's cheap. I only came here because of the reviews and I'm so glad I only ordered a taco that wasn't worth the $2 bucks. My husband didn't like his tiny burrito and the service needs to cheer up, they were not friendly.

This is the best restaurant in southern AZ. My dad eats there every day because it's awesome.

Chile Pepper is for locals. They love the place. I don't know why. The "salsa" sucks. It is kind of like tomato juice with some spices thrown in. My grandpa drinks it. The rolled tacos are okay and the bean burritos are okay. That's about it. The last time I was here, I ordered a carne asada burrito. I quickly learned that Chile Pepper's idea of a "burrito" is meat wrapped in a tortilla. That's it. No beans. No rice. No pico. No lettuce. Nothing. Just meat. When I tried to eat it, the damn thing unwrapped itself and fell apart. I now had a pile of carne asada in the middle of a flat tortilla. Awesome... I ate some with a fork, but gave up and stole a rolled taco from my mom. I try to avoid Chile Pepper when I'm in Yuma, but everybody in my freaking family loves the place. Argh.

Best Mexican fast food ever!!! I so missed the rolled tacos and machaca burrito! Such a simple meal and yet positively delightful!

    (5)
  • Shane G.

Typical fare for Yuma's Mexican food. DO NOT get the carne asada burrito two people got it and with one grisselly bite half the meat came out and was inedible. Rolled tacos are probably just delivered frozen and fried to serve, in other words there a dime a dozen!!

    (2)
  • Jonathan N.

Do not come here if you are hungry and expect to eat in a reasonable time frame... my friends and I ordered burritos, common fare for a Mexican restaurant, and it has now been over 20 minutes and we have not received our food. There have been about a dozen other orders filled in the meantime. This is one place I will refuse to ever visit again. Ever. If there were less stars available I would give less.

Good bean and cheese burritos, and ok salsa. Standard everything else. It's a type of place for maybe a lunch between work or school, you know? A place that you frequent, but it's not really life changing or anything.

  • Mari D.

What's to say. I love the bean and cheese burritos and the rolled need tacos! My absolute favorite's!! Simple and yet oh so yummy!!!! I always make it a must when I come back to Yuma to stop by and get a meal in. Sometimes I even take 10 to go and freeze them so I can get my craving out when I haven't had some in a while. Two thumbs up!!

What you should order: They are best known for their bean & cheese burritos, rolled tacos and the "sauce". * The sauce - People this is not hot sauce or salsa so get over it!!! The secret to the sauce is you drink it after each bite, spoon it into your buritto and use it for "dunking" the rolled tacos. Another trick is opening your burrito and filling it up. Messy but incredibly tasty! Once you got this down, your mind set will change. * Rolled tacos (only called that in Yuma) elsewhere taquitos - The meat is moist and seasoned just right. If you come in early in the morning to pickup a to go order, you will see ladies rolling the tacos. The corn tortillas are thin and crisp. We order uncooked tacos and freeze them for future use. Yes, they will sell them to you uncooked. * Bean & Cheese burritos - The beans taste homemade and not out of can. It's amazing how many places can screw up refried beans. The jack cheese is a nice compliment to their beans. We usually order extra. Yes, it cost $.50 more but it's worth it. The tortillas are warm and fresh. They are also good just by themselves or ordered as a buttered tortilla or quesadilla. The burritos are small because most people order along with the tacos. The simplicity of the bean and cheese burrito along with the tacos and dunking sauce is a local favorite. * Ice tea - Is fresh brewed not instant and has free refills. * Pepsi - I always say, you can tell if a Mexican food restaurant is going to be good is if they know how to mix their soda. Their Pepsi is NEVER flat and has the right combination of syrup and carbonation. A nice sweet burn. Sorry, no free refills. Get a large! Dining area: * The reason for the "high school cafeteria" feel is because the local high schools basically support these two places. This is a fast food place not a 5 star TexMex cruisine. Get them in and out. One thing I can say is you will always run into someone you know if you spend any amount of time there. Great people watching experience and place to meet up. Customer Service: * For all you non "Yumans", Chile Pepper and/or Mr. G's has NEVER been known for its customer service...that is non-existent. In my opinion, I believe they think because they are locally owned and run by family members, they are exempt from "customer service". If it ain't broke why fix it. And why should they...they are rolling in the dough. Although, with the small town mentality reversed they could be doing a 100 times better. Unfortunately, they are there to just take your order as fast as possible. No secret menu items here. If there isn't a button for it (aka not on the menu) they will not cater to you. Mr. G's tends to be better. So if you have dietary restrictions (allergic to gutten or other) this is not the place for you. But for us die-hard fans, born and raised in Yuma, we just deal with it because we get our order and leave. I do have to say that they are very fast, efficient and consistent and 98% of the time your order is right. In their book, mission accomplished! The reason they don't expand, is because the customer service wouldn't fly elsewhere. And their fan base is from the local kids that went to school there and hooked in their parents. I do have to say they tend to be comparable to Rito's in Phoenix.

Stuck on what to order? Can't go wrong with the bean & cheese burrito! This is a must stop every time I am in town visiting family. Yes the lines are long, but they are long for a reason; it is delicious! But, don't let the long line deter you at all as typically their service has always been pretty quick. Also, being a local family owned and operated restaurant any money you spend is going right back into the local community. The bean and cheese burritos are my favorite. Also, they have good 50/50 bowls. One thing that is good that is not on their menu is a butter tortilla. I know its not good for me but it is delicious! It is a warmed tortilla with some butter on it. All of their tortillas are homemade fresh! You're welcome in advance!

I read all the reviews and needless to say I wasn't very impressed with the food, having a Carne Asada Burrito and a dozen of rolled tacos. The salsa wasn't anything to review, seemed bland and watered down. I did like it, I just wasn't like "Wow, this food is amazing."

    (3)
  • Victoria I.

Love the quesadillas and burritos. I think a lot of people dislike the watery salsa that comes with the burrito but I'm one of those that love the unique salsa. I know everyone has different taste though.

A true Yuma tradition. Ask anyone what they miss when they move away from Yuma, and it is certain that Chile Pepper (and/or Mr. G's) will be on their top 5 list! Great flavor and quick lunch/dinner. Bean n cheese burritos and rolled tacos are favorites.

    (5)
  • Reena D.

I gave it 2 stars for the food. Simply put, it was very bland. The meat had no flavor, salsa was watery. Rices and beans were boring. Tacos were also bland. Do they season anything? The people that recommended this to us have no taste buds or have never had good, authentic Mexican food before. There's plenty of places in Yuma and sadly we will not be returning.

    (2)
  • Elia J.

Chile Pepper is still a Yuma landmark. I love their rolled tacos, and of course the famous bean and cheese burritos. Also, their breakfast burritos are the bomb, especially the potato egg and chorizo. The down side is the salsa is not NEARLY as good as I remember from when I would go there for lunch in High School. It has gotten REALLY watered down and it's just not very tasty. It's definitely "gringo" salsa, and there is even much better "gringo" salsa to be had in town.

OMG, I cant even believe that there is another person that has had the exact same experience as Amiee H. I thought I was in the twilight zone when I was told that I could not order food from this side because it was for phone orders only. LOL. Then my experience just got worse. Being from San Diego I have gotten accustom to a certain level of service and taste from my Mexican food. This place did not deliver on either. Here it goes Me: I would like 3 rolled tacos with guacamole, and cheese. Cashier: we can not give you cheese. Me: that's okay I will pay for it. Cashier: but there is no way for me to charge you for cheese, no button for cheese, and they come wrapped up. Me: What? cashier: the rolled tacos come rolled up. We can not put cheese on them Me: Do you not have cheese? Cashier: We have cheese...I just cant give you any...you should order the special Me: Special" 3 rolled tacos with lettuce tomatoes and cheese", but I don't want lettuce and tomatoes, and I want guacamole. Cashier: let me ask... few minutes later she returns. says Okay! Me happy Happy...until another cashier walk up. Cashier1 to cashier2: He wants cheese. Cashier2: we don't do that. Me: Why not? Cashier2: Because if do something like that for you than we are going to have to do it for everyone. Me: Sad and confused face... Okay just give me the rolled tacos with guacamole. The rolled tacos themselves were not half bad had they not been surrounded with SHAME! and the salsa WOW =Zero Stars. The worst watery tomato salsa that I have ever eaten. I don't know if its a regional thing, but I am soooo glad to call Sam Diego home.

I was told to come here from some friends in Phoenix cause they are known for some great, fast, Mexican food...I must say I have never been so disappointed in my life in a burrito...got the chorizo, potato, and egg burrito...tried to add jalapeños but they don't even have them? The burrito was basically cold...felt like it was pre-made and maybe warmed up...Don't bother with this place...waste of time and money!!!

  • Christopher B.

It's time to admit it: Chile Pepper has grown on me after going a few times. The rolled tacos and bean, cheese, and rice burritos are decent-tasting, filling, and reasonable. The place still looks like an elementary school cafeteria though!!! :)

    (3)
  • Kathy S.

I bring all out of towners to Chile Pepper. They may look at me strangely, but once they taste the food it is over. They come back to town and ask to go to Chile Pepper. The machaca and rolled tacos perfection.

Quick tasty cheap mexican food, can't argue with that! They have lunch specials that include 2 rolled tacos, rice and beans for under $4.00

Mmm! Burritos and rolled tacos! We always stop here when we are in Yuma. And usually order a lot to go and stick it in our ice chest on the way home. The Mexican food places in Phoenix are absolutely horrible compared to Yuma's! =)

  • Chloe E.

Favorite Mexican food hands down! This and Mr. G's, that is! Come here and get the bean, rice, cheese burrito and rolled tacos and you're good to go! Also, the quesadillas are pretty good! But the best part is the salsa--it looks watery, but it tastes so darn good. Love this place.

  • Paul V.

Chile Pepper, you gave me a good breakfast and for that I thank you. This place is simple, the menu isn't massive and the dining hall is more like a cafeteria than a typical restaurant. That said, it's exactly what I expected being that it's in Yuma Arizona, so we ordered our food which for the morning was egg and bacon breakfast burritos, and a couple brownies. They were good! We were hungry, but I've been plenty of places that give you breakfast burritos that leave something to be desired and this wasn't one of them. The food was excellent and if I find myself in Yuma again, or I should say when I find myself in Yuma again, I'd totally go back for a couple more. They lasted us all day as we explored Yuma before making the journey up to Quartzsite, and eventually Phoenix.

  • Rob K.

I had high expectations when an acquaintance who grew up in Yuma told me that this was the best Mexican food she's ever eaten. Unfortunately, my expectations were let down. This food here is just meh, the salsa runs like WATER. I had the carne asada fajita burrito and while the veggies were definitely fresh and delicious, the meat lacked flavor, and they really skimp out on the cheese. The rest of the people in our party were less then impressed with their food. The rolled tacos I tried were just ok.... I've had much better Mexican in San Diego and wouldn't go out of my way when in Yuma to eat here again.

    (2)
  • Paulina F.

The food is to die for!! There is no other place like chile pepper! Ran by one family, that has 3 other restaurants in town. Only here in Yuma can you get this authentic Mexican food like this. Only at chile pepper!!

you got to love the rolled tacos and machaka burritos...good place to eat with the family and not have any decisions on what to eat there..love it..

I was in Yuma this past weekend and while I was Yelping for a new place to try for dinner, I saw the less than flattering reviews for Chili Pepper. So I felt compelled to head down there for dinner and write a review in defense of an old childhood favorite. Service: N/A It is essentially a fast food place, so service is not really an issue. I will say, they work quick. You won't have to wait long for your food, unless you order a few dozen burritos, which after you eat here the first time, you may want to. Food: 5/5 I can't say enough good things about the food here. But you have to accept it for what it is, Mexican comfort food. This is not, nor does it pretend to be, five-star cuisine. It is burritos. It is rolled tacos. It is simple, yummy food. But for what it is, it is the absolute best you will find. I have been eating here literally since I was old enough for solid food. I have yet to have anything bad here. The rolled tacos are excellent. All the burritos are excellent... the machaca, the chorizo, the fajitas, a simple bean and cheese. It doesn't matter. They are all great. Whatever you order, you will be pleased. Just make sure and order more than one, because you'll want more. So what are people complaining about? Is it salty? Yeah. Is it fatty? Yeah. Is it bad for you? Yeah. Does it taste amazing? YEAH! You don't go to Chili Pepper looking for diet food, or gourmet offerings. You go there for simple, easy, Mexican comfort food. And when that is what you want, you want Chili Pepper. Period. Overall Impressions: N/A Again, it's a fast food joint. Are you looking for silk tablecloths and chandeliers? Just go there. Now. And get me a red chili burrito!

  • Christian G.

Burritos were a little too soggy and it was a so-so place overall. The pricing was low, but it was that saying where "you get what you pay for." There wasn't anything impressive here.

  • Roxy B.

I'm visiting from California. I was told by several ppl that this place is delicious. Being Mexican & this place being recommended by my Mexican family members I expected this place to be good. All I wanted was a carne asada burrito. Well, that's EXACTLY what I got. Carne asada wrapped in a tortilla. What happened to condiments? Beans, sour cream, guac, anything??? I was so disappointed. & I made sure to keep mentioning to everyone who keeps recommending it that THEY'RE CRAZY.

  • Rich G.

Not bad, but I had high expectations considering the rave reviews from USA Today.

  • Kellie T.

Listen, folks. This is a "staple" food kinda place. For crap's sake, don't order anything fancy off the menu, unless you're already a regular and know what it tastes like. The power of Chile Pepper is in its simplicity. Let's deconstruct the mainstay: the bean, cheese and rice burrito. A delectable, buttery, respectfully cooked flour tortilla. Beans. With lotsa lard. Rice, ever so lovingly seasoned. And cheese. Glorious cheese. How can you go wrong? It's damn yummy. If you feel like extras, top off those burritos with some rolled beef tacos. If you're feeling extra saucy, get a quesadilla, son! Cheese and tortilla. Too simple to f*** up. ____ I was born and raised in Yuma. As such, I've had Chile Pepper more times than I can count on my fingers and toes, ten times over. In that time, it never failed to satiate my hunger. And I don't give a goddamned about what anyone says about the "watery hotsauce." Don't you know that there are starving children in various 3rd world countries, waiting to eat the crumbs that fall onto your Chile Pepper-issued paper plate? 5 stars for the CONSISTENCY. For the plainly yummy. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

  • Michael M.

This is GREAT Mexican food with a one of a kind flavor that keeps you coming back for more. I've been going to either Mr G's or Chile Pepper for the past few decades and have come to appreciate the simple deliciousness of the fare. I'm sure with as many varying opinions that Yelp reviewers have, it's hard to understand just how great Chile Pepper and Mr G's food really is without trying it for yourself. Try the bean and cheese burrito and rolled tacos (always ask for them extra crispy).

    (5)
  • Kevin K.

Adding a rolled taco to your bean and cheese is a must!

Always the best bean and cheese burritos in the world!

Chili Pepper and Mr. Gs is all about consistency. I know what to expect and it is always good. On Wednesdays go and get their bean and cheese burrito! Yum. I also really like their rolled tacos. Nothing special but a good price! The only complaint I have is their salsa. It's VERY watery/runny. Wish they had some variety with that, or at least a little more texture to their salsa. Machaca and carne asada are also delicious!

    (4)
  • Veronica L.

I admit. I love greasy junk food, so when I learned that locals love this place, I was excited to try it. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat more than 2 bites of the carne asada burrito that I ordered. It was just plain gross. The first bite threw me off. I was like "?!". I thought there was something wrong with my tongue because a burrito couldn't possibly taste this gross. So I took the second bite and was like "@%$%#$#$%@#$^!!!!!", and I threw the rest in a trash. This was my first and only Chile Pepper experience.

  • Ruth W.

When you're a newbie in town, naturally, you would listen to other people's food advice. So, when we first moved here, of course, I fell for the hype about this place. "Oh, yeah. You gotta check out the carne asada burritos. The bean and cheese is so good." Checked them out I did. Final verdict: It's nothing really exciting, but I mean no disrespect to a lot of people who were weaned off this stuff. Chili Pepper is a Yuma institution, and so, it carries with it a certain historical charm. And I get that, and I will still eat the been and cheese burritos, with the not so bad watery salsa. The ridiculous long lines at lunch is just that. Ridiculous. What's wrong with me???? It can certainly give one an inferiority complex because you think you SHOULD like it, and you really don't, although the other 90,000 of people who live here, do. Maybe it's a Yuma thing. But I'm not saying like it's a bad thing.

Heard a lot about this place, and in constant search for the best Mexican food around, can't say much good for what we had. Both had the carne asada burrito. It was good size. Nothing on it but a whole lot of GREASY carne asada. Offered a small cup of sour cream OR guacamole. Left two-thirds of it.

The longer I live in Arizona, the more I feel like- If the cashier can articulate her feelings just by how she drew in her eyebrows that day- it's probably going to be good! My husband is a huge fan- My sister and I were driving back from the beach and decided to stop in to grab some food for him. The place is a little tucked away- but it was busy! The first thing I noticed was that there were only women working there- hustling in the back, cleaning after people, and running the register. It seemed a family owned place, cafeteria setting- and the menu board reminded me of concession stand menu boards at a Little League ball park. All this is not a bad thing, in my small travels, this is what actually made me feel like it's a legit local joint. I was greeted by a really sweet angry eye-browed cashier (You mad sis? Aw naw, that's just your eyebrows). We ordered what my husband told me to, machaca burrito, bean and cheese burritos with and tacos (or taquitos), and extra salsa. Apparently, the carne asada isn't the best my husband has had. We can home with the food and were not disappointed! Apparently, this is the best way to eat their bean and cheese burrito- Unroll bean and cheese Place rolled taco in burrito Pour in some salsa Roll burrito back up Dip in salsa as you are eating You'll be happy you did it! I say this place is worth a stop in. The problem is that you have to know what is good on the menu, so talk to the local kine!

I grew up on bean and cheese burritos and rolled tacos from Chile Pepper. Best beans, fresh flour tortillas, rolled tacos and hot sauce in the world as far as I'm concerned. The locals know what I'm talking about. The hot sauce is the perfect consistency to get into all the nooks and crannies of a rolled taco as you pour it down one end. You dunk burritos in the stuff, everybody knows that. California has little to offer that comes even close. My mouth is watering now, time for a trip to Yuma to get some real Mexican food.

I stopped at the Chile Pepper on the way from Arizona to California, and i enjoyed it! I got the Bean, Cheese and Rice burrito and i thought it was great! What i think that made the burrito was the Salsa! I would defiantly go back but i am not sure if it is a must go! If you are in Yuma and you wanna try some good mexican food that you have never tried before then i would go!

I don't live in Yuma anymore, but when I go to visit, I have to go to Chili Pepper. Now, my tastes have changed through the years. I went to Kofa so it was always Chili Pepper, then in college it was Mr. G's, but then Mr. G's moved and started to suck! (What happened? Is the building too new? No more roaches? What happened to Mr. G's?) So, I decided to go back to Chili Pepper. Even had the scare back in 2005(? year) and had to go and get the shot (with 1/2 of Yuma) since one of the workers came down with a communicable disease. But, I figure, that only made them cleaner and more cautious. Nothing means home like Chili Peppers bean and cheese soaked in salsa. Going home on Saturday to visit family, but will have to stop and get lunch 1st. :)

This was a sad attempt at Mexican food. The guacamole is the fake stuff you buy at the supermarket and they charge you extra for a tablespoon of it! When the food came out it was just unappetizing. We ordered rolled tacos, their "folded" tacos, and carne asada burritos, all were way smaller portions than what we expected for the price. Definitely would not recommend this place to anyone who has had good Mexican food you will be sadly disappointed.

OK, so I grew up in Yuma. I live in Tucson now and I must say, there is some damn good Mexican food here. Probably some of the best in the world. But when I go back to hang out, I definitely make it back to chili pepper. You see, i have read a lot of reviews about chili pepper and iI take it personally when some dumb ass who doesnt know a turd from a tootsie roll, gets on here and blasts this place and says it was "nasty", go @#%& your self. When i go to towns or cities i never been to before iI ask where to eat, naturally. When i get to the institution they rereference to, I always ask what is known here as the good stuff. Why would you go to a taco place and order jalapeño poppers and all this other stuff that doesnt make sense. Ask them what is good. as stated by other people, this place IS consistent. I have never been anywhereelse that has been this consistent and GOOD after eating here since i was a kid, 26 years worth of chili pepper and i never left saying, "that sucked". This isnt 5 star dining or dont expect Bobby Flay who thinks he knows everything about southwest cooking, to come out and get all fancy on that ass. Its good homemade mexican food, from your grandma or your buddy who is mexican, grandma. The salsa pair perfectly with their rolled tacos and cheese tortillas aka cheese quesadilla. They have been around for years, like 70...so what does that tell you?

I grew up in Yuma, AZ and the Chile Pepper had AMAZING burritos. The been and cheese was always my favorite. Their salsa is delicious! Living on the East Coast I seriously miss the deliciousness of Chile Pepper. From what I remember the restaurant itself had a cafeteria feeling, but the food more than makes up for it!!

Nasty. Why people think this food is good is beyond me. Filibertos is far better. I will never come back, and if you haven't been here, don't waste your time or money. Truly, I have had better food from Taco Bell and Del Taco. People who say this food is good have never been outside of Yuma.

I love this place! Every time I go to Yuma, this is the first place I go to. Service shouldn't be an issue just like no one chooses McD's based on their service. It's a fast food Mexican place that has awesome rolled tacos, and buttered burritos. I can't wait till I get back to Yuma next.

Probably my favorite place to eat ever. Not only is it my favorite mexican food of all time, but my last meal would consist of the machaca burrito and their salsa....I freaking love this place. It's real mexican food straight from the desert. Chile Pepper is significantly better than Mr. G's despite their connection.

Just like Mr Gs! Chile Pepper is bomb! Yummy in my tummy.

I'd like to say, that yes, I have been outside of Yuma (to all you Californians who have dissed this place)... And Chile Pepper is a local tradition... So an outsider can't really relate. It's like that one place you've grown up going to, and once you leave you crave it instantly. My friend who was born here still craves Chile Pepper, even though he's been living on Oahu for quite some time now... I've noticed the "bad" reviews came from people from larger cities whose ideas of Mexican restaurants are probably On the Border, or some top "Mexican" fusion cuisine, which frankly, wouldn't be considered authentic to begin with. Saw another negative review from someone who was from Huntington Beach... Yeah, that's self-explanatory... Mostly, wealthy people over there... Anyway, my point being... If you're a local, this is a great place to get tacos, quesadillas, burritos, etc. It may not be the fanciest place, but it's delicious! Come live here in the southwest for awhile, and you'll soon notice, the places with the best, close to authentic food will be the "hole in the walls", the "taco trucks", the "cafeteria" lookin' restaurants... guarantee it.

Great rolled tacos. Great bean & cheese burritos. Great fresh tortillas. It is a must stop now every time I pass through. Too bad I didn't frequent it more when I lived there for 4 years.

This used to be the IT place in town but management changes, establishment changes, & higher prices have brought the ratings down. This place reminds me more of a fast food joint than a sit-down Mexican restaurant. Plus, they've got competition...Herraduras!

I don't live in Yuma Arizona anymore, but my mouth waters for the taste of the carne asada burritos. They have the best mexican food as far as I'm concerned. I never liked mexican food but Chili Peppers is GREAT !!!! I highly recommend it their food is really good.

I still love this place's food, but they need to stop allowing beggars to hang around the front door.

Talking about the taste of my youth, I can remember screaming across town on our lunch break from Yuma HS and then screaming back just in time to make the bell. We had to eat in class, but everyone wondered how we pulled it off and not be late. This is still the first place I go the second I roll into town. Bean and Cheese, machaca, green and red chile burritos and the rolled tacos. Aye Carumba! And even their simple tortillas are sublime. Now In live in Portland, OR and hardly ever make it back to Yuma. Anybody know if Chile Pepper will ship???

I grew up eating Chili Pepper and it spoiled me for life. I have since lived in almost every major city in the US - East Coast, West Coast and Midwest - and have not found anything that can come close. The Beef Machaca is juicy and flavorful, the tortillas are home made and tasty in and of themselves and the salsa is perfect. I live on the East Coast now but am trying to find a way back to Yuma for this.

Chile Pepper?!?!?! When did you shrink your burritos and add water to your salsa????? I grew up on Chile Pepper. And if I would have rated it then it would have been off the charts. There is a white girl working there now. I don't know if she still does. It doesn't sway my star rating at all. Not even a tiny bit. It's just an observation. She's very nice. But Chile Pepper has let me down. There prices are ridiculous compared to their golden days. I live in Phx now.. there is a Carolina's here. They use yellow cheese. Other than that they are like the Chile Pepper I loved. So I have converted. I'm sorry Chile Pepper, good riddens, it is like a part of me has died.......

The only thing good here are the rolled tacos, bean and cheese burittos, and the salsa! And when I mean good, I mean effin' bomb! But that's it. Now if those were the only two things on the menu, they would get 5 stars. What do you think goes in a carne asada burrito? At the least I would think oninos, and cilantro-NOPE- It comes P-L-A-I-N! seriously nothing but greasy meat, they don't even have cilantro in the building! tsk tsk. Their chile rojo is waaay salty and their machaca is always too wet (albeit tasty). Their 'guac' (if that's what you wanna call it) tastes like it came out of a bag. Not very good authentic fare at all, but the bean and cheese are money.

local favorite, but not my cup of tea. during my last chile pepper visit, a car came crashed into the dining area... lets just say, the snow birds need to get off the road. O_o

Chili Pepper and can't wait to come and visit you in two weeks!!! Your machaca burritos, bean and cheese burritos, and taquitos are amazing and I look forward to my yearly visit with you. Adios!

When I first moved to Yuma I was told by the locals that this place is a must. I beg to differ. Bland, salty, and greasy. Not that there's much better in Yuma.

What? People here are rating Chile Pepper less than five stars? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?? Wow. I have never encountered a burrito as exquisite as the Chile Pepper bean and cheese burrito. I beg my boyfriend's mom to bring them to me when she comes from Yuma to San Diego. When I'm visiting Yuma I always stockpile at least five of them to take home with me. That is how good they are.

I cannot hold any bitter feeling toward Mr. G's or Chile Pepper for any of their changes. I myself miss the old building and the noticeably larger burritos they use to fold for the masses BUT it's a recession people! Costs were going to go up, I'm sure our parents didn't pay the same price as we did for 6 rolled tacos and a bean and cheese burrito (I'm fond of their bean and rice burritos as well). NO matter what you do, make sure you send someone to get you tacos if your coming into town late for Christmas or Thanksgiving because we all know they will run out. Pure Deliciousness... and you can't forget about the red chili meat fries... *drool* Make sure you wear the stretchy pants. ;)

This is a sick place.. but I have to admit I crave the taste of their bean and cheese burriots and salsa when I am not in Yuma. WTF? I know.... there is something about the taste of their tortilla... or the cheese... maybe it is the crack. But other things on the menu suck... Bean and Cheese- BOMB!

what is the big deal about chile pepper? a couple of my friends who were born and raised here grew up eating at chile pepper and swore it was the best yuma had to offer. yikes! that is too bad. i've tried the infamous bean and cheese burrito several times and i don't understand why people go crazy over it. i've also tried the rolled tacos and they weren't that great either. i mean, it wasn't the worst meals i've ever had, but it sure wasn't the best ones either. BUT, the salsa....hmmmm, can we say watered down??!! it was extremely disappointed after reading and hearing about the hype. can't say that i will never be back here, only because it is a place my friends like to go for lunch and the specials are cheap, but it's not something i would crave for and head to on my own...

Tasty tortillas. But their food is just bland bland bland unless you soak it in their salsa. If you love salsa, you'll like the food. I'm not a salsa fan so it doesn't do anything for me. No decor worth mentioning at all. I'll eat it if someone else is buying - but not something I'd choose if I'm going to have to pay for it. Plenty of other much better options available in this town.

On business in Yuma, I stopped in here on the advice of a few locals. This is a local Yuma institution so I had to try it and I'm glad I did, but I was a bit underwhelmed. It's a good place to people-watch, since it gets packed with Yumans of every shape, size, color and socio-economic status during lunch. The food was decent but nothing to write home about. The space reminds me of a mid-sized high school cafetaria, and there's not much atmosphere aside from the obvious local flavor you get the moment you step in.

This is the place all the locals go for Mexican food. It's kinda hidden across the street from Blimpies at 24th street and Avenue A. Extensive menu. The staples are the bean and cheese burritos and rolled tacos. Everything is good. I havent tried the burgers but people say they're good too. The fresh tortillas that they use are GREAT and you can buy some too. Good place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. fast service. bland decor. older tables. but the food alone at the cheap price gets the 5 stars.

I would compose music about this place if I could. When my family holds hands around the Thanksgiving table and everyone states what they are thankful for, I say Chile Pepper. The salsa is lovingly referred to as YUMA CRACK. It's sooooo yummy! ! ! Ask anyone who grew up in this town and moved away what they miss about Yuma and you will get the same answer, Chile Pepper. The bean and cheese, bean, rice and cheese or the machaca and rolled tacos are a piece of heaven here on earth and then you add the salsa and you can lay me down because, it doesn't get any better than this. It's not another taco stand, if I can request my last meal on earth, it would be a bean and cheese burrito, a machaca burrito extra juicy and some rolled tacos and about a gallon of salsa. You could put the salsa on a turd and ask for seconds.

This place introduced me to the wonder that is machaca. I have since been on a quest to find a good recipe and have yet to find one that matches the perfect balance between spicy and savory that Chile Pepper has achieved. I live on the East Coast and most people look at me with blank stares when I talk about machaca.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
