The Antlers continues to amaze me. It's like one of those obscure back road cafés Peter Mayle writes about in A YEAR IN PROVENCE. Not French mind you, but the best food within a hundred mile radius. Tonight's special, Mongolian Beef, had a great mixture of chopped fresh, crispy veggies, lean bite-sized bites of beef w/ no(0) gristle & best of all, wonderful sauce with a hint of ginger, that was NOT thickened w/ corn starch. I sure wish I had room for one of their equally delicious desserts.

I rolled into Antlers Cafe & Bar after sixty plus miles on the trail. I haven't been to this place in 25 years, and I can definitely state it has grown better over the years. Of course, there was that little fire thing, but they rebuilt bigger and better. Anyway, it's hard to complain about any food after you've been eating freeze-dried for the past couple of days, and at Antlers you would just be wrong anyway. Ziggy and I rolled in after a long morning on the trails, thirsty, hungry and tired. Of course, being a dog, Ziggy could not go inside, but fortunately, the Antlers has a large, enclosed patio, complete with a dog water dish. The very polite bartender/waittress/cashier welcomed us and immediately brought tea and a menu. I kept it pretty simple with a hand-formed 8 oz burger cooked a perfect medrare, garnished with bacon, cheese, green chile, lettuce, tomato, pickle and some hand-cut french fries. Ziggy went with the french dip, and had cole slaw for his side. I drizzled some of the jus on the beef and gave it to Ziggy. He scarfed it in about a minute. I took a bit longer, savoring my burger and fries with a glass of iced tea, looking out over the alfalfa fields to the mountains beyond. Service was exceptional, food was great and supporting local businesses in the rural areas of Arizona leaves you with a good feeling. Ziggy gives it 5 paws.

First off, Young, AZ is an amazing out-of-the-way place up in the pine country below the rim. There is simply no direct route to get there. However, the drive is awe inspiring, the town is sleepy and Antlers Cafe & Bar is where you go for 5 Star cuisine from Scott, a master chef! Scott had open several high dollar places in Phoenix/Scottsdale including 'Sky'. He and his wife decided to get away from it all and moved to Young and opened Antlers. The place is comfortable and gorgeous with a nice dining room, large divided patio, and a spacious Western style bar complete with; a pool table, full bar, a John Wayne enclave and a slew of the best big game mounts I've seen in a while! The food & service were outstanding! I had the 'Hebe' jalapeños Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and fresh cut fries. This entrée was a Southwest fusion of a classic and named after a local cowboy. It was perfect! We also had a deep fried ravioli appetizer. Even before the appetizer the owner's wife brought us out piping hot peach/apple cobbler smothered in ice cream! The owner, Master Chef Scott came out and sat with us and talked about the food and the place. He is working with local small plot farmers in the area who supply him with fresh, local grown, seasonal food. The fruit for the cobbler was from a local orchard. This place is perfect to a guy like me. 3+ hour drive but the food and scenery are worth every minute!

Just awesome food and service. Be adventurous, hit the highway and come enjoy the food and locale. My chicken fried steak was perfect. No kidding. Large portions at very reasonable prices. Win-Win and the drive up from Roosevelt Lake is as beautiful as it gets.

We were camping up on the Mogollon Rim and decided to take drive down to Young, a little town down in the Tonto Basin. Fun scenic drive and found the coolest little restaurant called Antlers Cafe. Who would ever believe that a place in the middle of absolutely nowhere would serve such incredibly good tasting food. I was rather shocked at the quality of the food as they must have a professionally trained chef back there. Seriously, I'm a foodie and I don't say that lightly, the food was really that good. My wife had chicken fried steak with these creamy mashed potatoes or out of this world- monstrous portion plate too. I had a cheeseburger seemed like it was 2 inches thick and was made out of ground steak not cheap hamburger meat - I could taste the difference. Quality beef, charbroiled perfectly bloody medium rare with a soft moist bun and he came with homemade coleslaw that was awesome too. Don't forget to try the really good desserts too the girls loved them. I had the two dollar PBR 's for dessert! Can't beat a hipster can of beer for two bucks in this awesomely decorated lodge cabin of a restaurant. Owner Pam is a real hoot and a half. She sat at our table for an extensive amount of time telling us the history of the restaurant and the surrounding area, explaining different sites to see including Indian ruins and places to a ATV. She invited us for the festival it's coming up and said that we could park your trailer on her land - go figure! I can't wait to come back and visit and probably stay in the area for a few days. If you ever find yourself going through Young Arizona be sure to stop in and give him a holler as if you don't you'll miss out on something.

My family loves this place. We've eaten probably half the items on the menu and all have been fantastic. I have to get the Strawberry Gorgonzola salad and Butter Cake every time I'm in town. Yum!! Also, everyone is so friendly, especially Pam. She loves babies and always whisks mine away while she takes orders or brings them toys to play with.

Ordered the shrimp scampi with red rice and jalapeños . So so so good. Heat was hot enough to make me sweat and the butter brought it all home. Friendly service, no rush, you can hang out, read their books, play pool, and enjoy the place. Sit in the bar area for relaxing lighting and ambiance . Decent wind and beer list too. Food was amazing. The next day we also had lunch there and the sandwiches were professional grade! This place has great great food!

When you visit a restaurant and a town as small as Young, AZ, you really want it to be spectacular, so you can have a hidden, inaccessible treasure you can rave about. Antlers is a storied establishment, having burned to the ground a few years ago, before being rebuilt. I can't tell whether the reconstruction was meant to be faithful to the original design, or a completely new design, as I never went to the original restaurant - but let's hope it was intended to be a recreation of the original, because it's not exactly fancy in there. The staff lives up to what you'd expect in such an out-of-the-way place - friendly and unassuming. Our waitress was also the hostess, and she was wearing socks without any shoes. This is probably a pretty slick gig for a girl who lives in a ranching community that can only be reached via dirt road. The parking lot, as you'd expect, contained almost exclusively trucks, SUVs, a quad or two, at least one Jeep (because that was what I drove), and a goat. A totally appropriate fleet for such a location (the goat was not part of the fleet - the little creature was probably only responsible for providing the cheese for the salads). The menu was pretty standard - salads, sides, sandwiches, some entrees, desserts, and drinks. They even had an obligatory "south of the border" section, which seems to be a staple in Arizona, even in really small, remote towns. I opted for the plain ol' burger, cooked medium rare. I wish I could say it was an excellent burger - the meat was good, and they actually cooked it exactly how I ordered it. It's surprising how many places can't achieve medium rare, but they did it with flying colors. Unfortunately, they didn't include the bacon I ordered on it, and it was incredibly salty. Others at my table didn't have the same experience, so I'll count it as an unfortunate misstep by the cook, and not the norm (although it's hard to imagine how the cook can accidentally put that much salt on a burger). If you're someone who sucks down soda like it's air, you might not be pleased with their specific "only one refill" policy. I didn't mind it, as I rarely, if ever, get more than one refill anyways. Overall, the visit was a good experience, although it's disappointing to say that it's not a place where you absolutely have to eat if you find yourself in those parts.

This is fine dining like you've never had before in a family-friendly relaxed atmosphere where everybody from the other customers to the staff will treat you like a friend. Saturday night is prime rib and I promise it will melt in your mouth. Every single thing that comes our of Scott and Pam's kitchen is delicious and served with a smile. You will not want to miss a meal at the Antlers!

Cool local place. You get a real sense of Young here. Good prices, good service. Pecan chicken and chicken fried steak both are very good.

Getting there is half the fun. Be prepared for a dirt road but one that's good enough for a family sedan. We weren't sure if there was even one restaurant in Young, but there was exactly one and what a delightful surprise. Friendly owners transplanted from Scottsdale shared their story with us. Capable server and there was ample evidence that the place was run by folks with a lot of experience. I'll bet the restrooms in the old building weren't nearly as nice as in the new one. We had the pulled pork sandwich with 20 spices and the Monte Cristo sandwich. Each around $8. Great value and great taste. Hubby said that was the best Monte Cristo he'd ever had and the sauce on the pork was like no other I'd ever sampled plus there was a lot of meat spilling out of the bun. But wait, there's more! Check out the dessert specials on the whiteboard. We ordered the peach-rhubarb cobbler ($5) which is big enough to share, fruit covered with a thin crumble and topped with vanilla ice cream. Yummmmm. We took home the peach butter cake, which had a thick butter-creamy sauce over a yellowish cake in which slices of peach were embedded. Again, big enough to share and that was our dinner after I reheated it slightly in the microwave per the server's instructions. Yummmm again. If you're longing for an Arizona back-woods road with great folks and delicious food at the end, the Antlers is for you. Just keep going until you find it--the antler-studded gate posts will let you know that you've arrived. If you're not in a big hurry to leave town, you can linger over the jigsaw puzzle in process or let your kids play with the toys and games the owners keep on hand for that purpose.
