A bland roll, overcooked beef, greasy onions. Not a good experience.

I hate having to write this because I have enjoyed Luke's on Alvernon for years. I started going in 1993 and I enjoyed eating JUST the Italian beef sandwiches. I ordered fries one time, but I didn't like them and haven't had them since. My wife was craving a Chicago hot dog (dog) from Luke's and I never had one because I'm not a fan of dogs, but my wife told me these were really good. We get there and my wife orders her dog first. The owner is taking our order and I notice the dog comes with fries which I don't like. I order my dog, but I explain I don't want the fries. He explains that is the only way the order comes. He goes on to state the fry's are free when you order the dog (@ almost $7.00 the fries are free?) and he could leave them off the order. I was hoping he would offer a concession, but their was none offered? I'm thinking maybe I need to clarify with him what I'm asking for and give him (the owner) an opportunity to offer me something other then fries. I asked him if there was something other then fries he could offer. He stated "NO" and stated he has served the dog with free fries for 50 year this way and that is the way it comes. I was floored!!!! Not an offer of a free fountain drink, bag of chips or anything just a flat out, NO! He had two customers one fine with the fries and the other not, so rather then compromise. He determined 50 years of tradition was more important then two customers. I will not go to this Luke's again!!!!!!!

This place is our Go-To on days we are running around getting errands done. We order the sandwiches and onion rings and by the time we're done, nothing has been wasted! We love that the onion rings are NOT dripping in grease! And to be honest....It is a bit pricey...BUT--When you think about what you pay for fast food.... Hands down I'd rather come here and support a local business. This place is clean and the Owner and his wife are super nice! Another keeper on our list!

I have long been a fan of Italian Beef sandwiches, and Luke's delivers in spades. The Only better sandwich is in Chicago, and that is a little far for a lunchtime fling. I have eaten the Beef as well as the meatball sandwiches, and the fries. As far as I am concerned, that is their raison d'etre. And what a justification. Piled high with beef, add peppers and/or cheese if you desire, and dunked in au jus, for a messy, but satisfying meal. The Meatballs are large, juice and smothered in marinara sauce. A messy meal. I prefer mine with hot peppers, a side of fries and a soda. Not for the calorie counters, but a worthy splurge!

Yum, Yum, YUMM!!! Best Chicago dog! To die for Italian beef sandwiches. And I must admit the burgers are pretty damn tasty, too. Not too impressed with the no refills on soda... drank Tea instead. We did buy a "ask me about my wiener" to bring home with us to Tampa. If you're looking for Fast, great quality Chicago style food.. You'll find it here!

It's not a cheesesteak, but the food is really good. The rolls are fresh and thats what makes the sandwich. They are pricey, but if I want good food I guess I have to take it. They need a better soda selection. And look...dont give me a look if I dont want a freaking soda or something to drink. One thing i will say is that the owner needs to be more careful on the his hiring practices. I think some of the afternoon and night employees dont wash their hands. Thats nasty. Another thing I saw with my own eyes is one chollo looking guy tearing open the mayonaise packets with his teeth when I ordered the italian sandwich. THIS DID HAPPEN AND I DIDNT WANT TO MAKE A SCENE SO I JUST THREW THE SANDWICH AWAY. I Just didnt have a camera to prove it. There is also one guy in there who looks like he chugs two sixpacks of his favorite brew before he comes on to his shift everyday. He really looks pickled. I try not to laugh when I go in their sometimes. I also heard someone coughing in the back. I hope they werent making sandwiches. Anyway, the food is great, but some of the employees need to take a bath and change their style of clothes before they come to work. BUt...thank you Luke for the good food!

Doesn't look like much but the staff was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Italian Beef Sandwich was divine and huge, (that's what she said)!

Well done for what it is. I'd order the mix of beef and sausage. Very greasy but what do you expect?

I've eaten at the Thornydale location and the food and service has been alright - owner is sort of dic&. Anyhow, we are far from please about the Alvernon location. Very cold and rude customer service. I didn't ask his name, but the younger guy with dark hair who normally wears the green "ask me about my wiener tee shirt" is a jerk. In fact, his attitude is so poor that the last time my girlfriend and I went there we just left before completing our order. He seems to give some customers a real "what the hell do you want" attitude. Forget that!

I would have loved to try Luke's, by the reviews it sounds great. However, I'm not sure I'll ever return to get my first taste after my experience tonight. When you clearly advertise that your establishment is open till 9pm on both the web and your restaurant building I would expect to be able to order off the menu or at least be warned that If I came at 8:30 I would only have two choices off of the menu. Maybe I'll get over my irritation with this someday and come back to try, what sound like delicious sandwiches and chicago dogs, but for now, I'll take my business elsewhere.

Authentic Chicago sandwiches stuffed with tons of awesome beef. The bun is soaked in the juice of the meat. Awesome Italian and Polish Sausages stuffed in the sandwiches. Their French fries are really underrated. Oh, and the Chicago hot dogs are a must-have if you come here. It's pretty crazy that you can get such good chicago food in Tucson. I visit place at least once a month to get my fix.

Delicious Delicious Delicious......simple as that! I've been a regular at Lukes for many many many years. I normally get the Italian beef, extra wet, with sweet peppers, cheese and hot peppers:) YUMMO! My daughter always opts for the Chicago dog minus the relish. Ive been to all the various Lukes locations and this one is my personal favorite:) The guy (s) who are always there immediately know what I want when they see my Volvo pull into the drive-thru and I have never been disappointed. The beef is tender and tasty and I like the bread to be soggy so I ask for it to be extra wet:) Part of the fun is just in the ordering lol ! Go try it you will NOT be disappointed:)

I missed everything Luke's had to offer....one of the many places i have to eat at when visiting Tucson.

  • Andy H.

Everything I've had here is good, best place around here to get Chicago-style hot dogs. Note it's greasy, the sandwiches will probably come plain unless you ask to add peppers or cheese, and a side order of fries is huge. Napkins are provided as rolls of paper towels.

Never had a problem! Great food, decent customer service. All locations have always gotten my order correct and quickly! The alvernon location has the drive through which is convenient even when you call in an order. Always a good place!

I love this place but I dislike their description of the veggie sub "Guys we got your lady covered also- or if you just want something light." Just not necessary. The italian subs are great though

  • Jim S.

Have been here a couple of times, never again. Food is ok, had double dog and fries. I read other posts about owner being a d*** about any changes, but figured they were exagerated. The posts were not. Lady after me ask to have bread and meat seperated because she lives an hour away. Aparently that is an outlandish request, They have a poster saying "This is not Burger King you dont get it your way. You take itmy way or you don't get the damn thing." Thought it was a joke. Apparently it is a business motto. Guess they forgot they are to provide a service. Well they won't have to worry about 'serving' me again. They will eventually close their doors from lack of customers making room for a good business.

This place could be great! The food is above average, the Chicago flair is cool, but wow the service is dirty! The guys behind the counter could care less about service. No acknowledgement of you, some are in "Lukes" shirts, others are not. What made me disappointed was when I asked if they sold just a Chicago dog without the fries as I wanted to get two dogs and one fry. His response was "Nope, you get what's on the menu." I ended up getting an Italian beef with sweet peppers, fry and a medium drink for a total of $14. For those kind of prices I would expect better service. Like many have said - surprised they are still in business!

I have only been here once, but i won't be going back. I will try other Luke's shops and see how they are though, as I guess they are independently owned. Anyway, i ordered a beef sandwich and actually saw the guy go in the back, grab beef with his hand, put it on a roll with no gloves, and put it in the microwave. Not sure if this is how they always make their sandwiches, but it definitely was not sanitary. The sandwich tasted good however, as i still ate it...lol. and the fries were very good also. I just don't think restaurants should use a microwave to heat their food and sanitation is very important.

This is the Lukes to go to. It serves a variety of legit Chicago style sandwiches. I prefer the combo. The sandwiches are huge and delicious and most are reasonably priced for 7-8 dollars, you will not be disappointed. In case you were wondering Lukes on Tucson, is owned by the same family but managed by different family members with varying meanies at each location. This location is my favorite.

I have had the pastrami (no mustard) and the Italian beef (dry). Both are great but the pastrami is the best I have had in Tucson. Also, they ARE open on Sundays.

I love Luke's.. Great beef, great dogs, great onion rings. Several times I've come back from Chicago and gone to Luke's to get a good dog!!!!!

Ate here at lunch and it was OK. The bun doesn't hold up to the juice/grease and the meat doesn't have the flavor I wish it would. I would give it four if the peppers were hot at least. More spice!!

    (3)
  • R. V.

The Chicago dogs are an obvious winner. Sometimes the buns get a little soggy if you don't eat it there but other than that their good. I also like the meatball subs. I decided today to try something different. By suggestion I went for the Italian beef with cheese and hot and sweet peppers...it was awesome! I will definitely being ordering that more often. Overall I have been coming here a while and have never been let down.

Dear Papa Luke, When I read the back of your shirt and it said "Ask me about my weiner" I was slightly offended. But, you are cocky for a reason - your weiner is delicious. As is your beef and fries. One comment, when a girl rolls up at your drive thru window asking for 16 inches of hearty turkey sammie goodness, do not second guess her! This girl can put it down! Well - - ok so I save about 8 to 10 inches for dinner - that sandwich is huge! For $10.50, two meals worth, and a wink from the dude working the counter, it's worth every penny.

  • Carrie B.

Yeah yeah yeah. I had a dog this past time and it was sublime. My only advice to the Luke's dawg novice: Make sure you upgrade and get the sturdier roll instead of a bun. The bun I got fell apart from my kraut. Maybe it was because the kraut was laying on top of a nice dollop of Chicago style relish-probably. So next time-I will get the roll instead of the bun. But don't worry, as my rapidly expanding waistline will attest to, I ate it anyways.

This place has become one of my favorite lunch time spots, being right up the street from my work. Sure the building is a little beat up and old. Sure, the workers aren't the most talkative of people, mostly enough conversation to get your order and that's it. I wouldn't say they are mean or rude, but they aren't the most friendly or welcoming either. They don't make changes to their food upon request. What's on the menu is what they offer. I can see how some people might be turned off by these things. I get it. But the food...yummmm. They serve up some of the best Italian beef in town. Great flavor to it. I would suggest getting the combo sandwich, which packs a large sausage, Italian beef and hot and sweet peppers and cheese. It's big, stuffed to the ends and delicious. So all in all, Luke's could definitely do better in the customer service department, but their food is worth a taste.

Italian Beef was good. Here's the problem: the place was less than appealing and I'm not talking about ambiance. Clean it up and you vastly improve it. I would never eat there again due to the lack of cleanliness. Clean it up and you get more cred. All this says to me is the place is poorly run because the food tastes good.

  • Carlos A.

I love this place. Sure, it's tiny and old, you're not here for the ambiance. The food...wow. Haven't had anything bad, but my absolute favorite is the combo sandwich. It's a monster, and tastes amazing.

I came here with the hubby looking for a good sandwich. I checked out this places website and was intrigued by the choices. It's a Chicago style sandwich place. Not much for atmosphere, but if you want quick service and good food in huge portions, this is the place for you. We both got the combo which is Italian beef and an Italian sausage on a french hoagie. We probably should have just split one. I would recommend getting cheese and hot peppers on this one. It was fantastic. There menu also includes a pastrami sandwich, Chicago dogs, burgers, ribeye steak sandwiches, and grilled chicken for those who are watching their figures. Lol. You shouldn't come here if you are watching your figure. There are 3 locations in Tucson. The others being on grant, and another on ft Lowell. If you are near any of these places and want some comfort food, stop by. You won't regret it.

I am very sick today thanks to Luke's. This location does not meet the standards as the Luke's on Speedway. The minute I walked in the kitchen the counter stank of rancid cooking grease. I really have nothing to compare it too (it was that bad). I could tell the stench came from the fries that where mushed together with our hot sandwich. I asked for the fries to be removed. After our order I waited a while before eating. The sandwich bun was soaked in Grease and I didn't even ask for them to make it soggy. I had the "Ribeye" (my favorite) but it was awful this time. The mushrooms swam in a soup like concoction of meat, cheese, and grease. I don't trust this location AT ALL. I have developed stomach problems and nausea since my lunch there earlier. Someone is NOT doing their job in that Luke's kitchen. I saw a large family leave (maybe they smelt the grease too?). I wish I had left too but my husband wanted to stay and eat. I am now sick enough to vow that I will never eat there again EVER no matter who I am dinning with. I WILL REFUSE. Let's hope it's not Salmonella. I must leave now and give homage to the ceramic altar (my toilet). If you wish to do the same then please eat at Luke's.

Finally stopped by Luke's out of convenience. I really wanted to try the Italian Beef dipped in au jus, but that makes for some messy take-out. I opted for the Pastrami. Flat out awesome sandwich. Piled high on a tasty, bakery fresh, Italian sub roll with delicious, salty pastrami, provo, some brown mustard and a pickle spear, I wolfed down this sub in five minutes. I got my buddy a Chicago dog and he said it was awesome too. I gotta get back for the beef!

Great food, but the service stinks, and the owners are aceholes. I'd drive out of my way every time to go to any location other than this one.

Lukes on S. Alvernon is the best Chicago style beef around. Walking in to this place is like walking in to some greasy joint on Milwaukee Ave and getting some no-nonsense food at the right price. Good beef, good dogs, great decor, this is the real deal. Lukes on Ft Lowell, however, is nothing like the S Alvernon location. The food is not worthy of mention, the place is nothing special, and the dirtbags behind the counter add nothing to charm. I can't account for the Grant Rd location, but I think I'll stick to the one on Alvernon. I hate being disappointed by bad beef sanguiches.

  • Francie R.

Just like others on here, I went to this place for lunch. I thought the sign about getting it their way was a joke....ummmm not so much. I asked for the Hot Beef with mushrooms and extra cheese and said that I would pay extra. I was told NO, we do not put mushrooms on anything but the ribeye. So I said fine, can I have the ribeye, but would you please dip it in the Au Jus. Again, NO, we don't do that. I was like, REALLY, in this day and age of customer service this is how your going to be!!! The food is OK, but not good enough to put up with the crappy attitude of the owner and this whole thing of MY FOOD MY WAY. You are not a five star sit down restaurant, your a freaking sandwich shop for goodness sake. This kind of attitude and service may go over in Chicago, but not so much in Tucson. I won't be going back.

OMG is this place fabulous. Quite a few places named Luke's in Tucson, but only te one on Alvernon delivers. Been going here for YEARS. Italian Beef add hot peppers, fries and an iced tea. It gets no better. AND, as someone who spends a week a month in Chicago that includes Portillos. They are real close until you get to the Giardiniera - Luke's is better. Go there. Must be this location. Preferably at lunch sometime between Oct and April so you can sit outside.

Awesome italian beef with hot peppers, awesome ribeye, awesome chicago dogs and even more awesome are the fries. I've never been disappointed by the food or the service.

I am an old school Luke's fan from Phoenix so I was expecting the same menu. Not exactly. The Phoenix location never had pastrami and ribeye sandwiches??? But I have access to them now and couldn't be happier. Not the most modern building but I wasn't dining in so it didn't matter. My review is actually 3.5 stars but that isn't allowed in Yelp so 3 it is. Pretty good.

Italian Beef Wet - loaded with sweet pepper and hot peppers was my choice. Ate here 3 times while in Tucson and wish I had one back home in Texas. Eat it on site as the bun will disintegrate by the time you get where you are going...but so worth eating here...missing it already.

Went again and asked for extra cheese I paid for and still barely visible....I'll just bring my own lol.

Amazing as always!! Love the Chicago dog loaded!!! This is my favorite hole in the wall lunch stop!! Not the prettiest not the dirtiest not the friendliest but soooo good!!!

  • Josh H.

I love Lukes in general. Big, greasy, delicious sandwiches. So why am I giving this location, and this location only, two stars? Mushrooms and onions. I called them tonight to get a meatball sandwich with grilled mushrooms and onions. I got told no. Flat out, unequivocal, no. I asked why. I was told that the boss man doesn't allow it. They come with the ribeye sandwich, and the ribeye sandwich only. I swear I felt like I was in a certain episode of Seinfeld. You know the one I'm talking about. So I went to the Lukes location on speedway, where they happily obliged my request, and laughed at the Alvernon location for this inexplicable policy.

  • .Alan Y.

Luke's looks like a craphole, no doubt, but they serve a mean italian beef. The split roll is toasted before it is slathered with meat drippings. It's a heart attack in a toasted, sopping wet roll. I've got no Chicago street cred to compare this to, but I like it...I like it a lot.
