A bit pricey, and it looks like their best item to order here is their pizza (Almost everyone ordering food here ordered it. I guess we should have taken a hint from them!). I started out with the homemade clam chowder, and had the spaghetti and meatballs. The clam chowder was delicious. It was flavorful, with lots of tender clams and potatoes. I wasn't as impressed with the actual entree. It was a very large portion, but in general the sauce was a bit one dimensional and the meatballs, while large, weren't very flavorful nor tender. Service was great and they were very friendly here. Dessert was very disappointing. The slice of cheesecake we had tasted like they had cooked a whole block of cream cheese on top of graham cracker crust with no other flavoring. If I'm in the area again, I'd definitely try a pizza, but probably none of the other entrees.

We came here to celebrate my birthday. I have to be honest - I wish I could have picked somewhere else better. Their service is great and I know they really tried. However, the food is quite awful and overpriced. The only thing I can think of was because they are probably the only Italian restaurant in town with no other competition to be better. I ordered a prime rib (medium rare) and it was so burn up on the outside...I simply couldn't finish it. The side order, spaghetti, tasted like it was soak in ketchup sauce. All of my companies could not finish their meals. We ordered Tiramisu and cheese cake to go. The Tiramisu was average but the cheese cake was so awful they threw it away after the first bite. If you are in town, I will not suggest anyone to come here.

Definitely not the best Italian food I've had before. The portions are huge, yes, but the food is bland. I feel like I ate 4000 calories and didn't enjoy more than 100 of them. We had some garlic bread and fried appetizers, with the one good dish being the zucchini. I then had a salad (unremarkable) and the alfredo with shrimp. The shrimp was tasteless, which is disappointing and pretty uncommon, and I started feeling nauseated after a few bites of the alfredo. I finished up with a huge slice of cheesecake. The restaurant seems to prefer quantity to quality, which might be preferable if you have huge families to feed, but I'd much rather have a smaller portion of something delicious. After the meal, I proceeded to develop food poisoning, so that might also be coloring my memory. Then again, there's a sit-down restaurant in Pine, so that's a pretty major thing. I probably would return since there aren't many options in the area, but I would try entirely different things on the menu next time. Maybe I just hit on a bad night.

I can't speak to food quality because when we got there they asked us to wait for a table. After a short wait they told us that they had no seating for five. Not a big deal, but we could see open tables that would have accommodated us. But, since we have worked in food service before, we understood that maybe they didn't have the wait staff or whatever. So, we walked across the street to eat but the same woman who had just turned us away came out of the restaurant and told us we could not park there if we were not patrons. Um. You just refused to seat us? In our defense we were very nice about it and moved our car, but I had to let Mama Joe's know that they lost at least one set of paying customers. FYI, across the street was great!

This place is close to our cabin, so we were curious to try it. And we were pleasantly surprised! This place actually has some of the best pizza I've ever had! I was impressed. Another time, we took friends and tried a few other things - wow, the portions are huge! The lasagna was amazing, and we loved the appetizers, too. I definitely will bring other friends back to this place. It's a great spot to get some good food up north when you don't feel like cooking. Amazing Italian comfort food - definitely give it a go.

The food is over priced but it's delicious authentic italian food, so if you have the money it's worth it.

It's a great location from our cabin in strawberry and been wanting to try it for about a year after getting into a rut of going to THAT brewery. I read the reviews and was defensive but I am all about 3 out of 5 stars for this place. We had the garlic bread....okay and even good but nothing I would rave about. The staff was blah...not great, not mean just kind of ok if we were there or left, didn't seem to much care. Two tables full in the entire place and we got seated at the two top by the bathroom....as others have said NOT A GOOD PLACE FOR the crapper that is for sure. We are from the valley so I didn't mind the price but kind of thought it would be less. Ultimately got the pizza which takes a long time as she said. Crust is a little thick but the fast was good. Didn't like my heartburn so the red sauce must be potent. Next time, I may do a takeout pizza but only after getting tums from the Ponderosa market.

The service was good and the food was delicious. Stopped by with our three children on the way home to Prescott. Would definitely recommend and stop in next time. The fried zucchini was yummy!!

Their Creme of Mushroom soup... OMGosh! Just when I thought I was happy, I bit into my garlic bread. Nearly fell outta my chair as I fought my husband for his slice! Delicious! We were seated right away, waitress was very busy but we weren't ignored or passed off. We will be stopping again.

You might not expect much from this quaint little place. Big mistake. Lasagna was good but eggplant was great. The boys had a meatball the size of a baseball. Hard to believe we had to travel to Strawberry so the little guys could try calamari. They loved it. I barely got a bite... but I'm not bitter. Staff so friendly.

Mama Joe Ain't No Ho By The Rue I ate at Mama Joe's again this weekend, Out with my kids with money to spend, The food was good, didn't need to pretend, Definitely a place I would recommend. The bread they brought out was soft and warm, There were not any flys around to swarm, This isn't a place for Jason Bourne, I read those books, the pages are worn. I decided to go with the chicken parm, Jeep in the lot no one set off the alarm, Oldest had lasagna it didn't do him any harm, He ate it all, and I didn't have to twist his arm. The middle one got the bow tie with meat sauce, He plays football, but also enjoys lacrosse, He finished his bowl, LIKE A BOSS, Chowed down the salad not made of moss. The staff were friendly and very polite, I'm sorry Lisa and Louise K. are full of spite, This place isn't the best but they'll do you right, Maybe you'll even spot Walter Cronkite. Bucho!!!!

The best Italian restaurant in Strawberry. The only one actually, but the pasta, ravioli, pizzas are great. The pizza is the best in the Pine/Strawberry area. Same owner, used to be known as Giuseppe's a few years back. The staff is friendly, but you should call ahead for reservations. They struggle with a rush. Overall a great place, I know folks from Payson that drive up just for this place. Give it a try.

My overall experience with this place was less than stellar. The wife, kids and I were in the area and decided to give this place a try. For starters, I ordered an iced tea (unsweetened). It had a weird tasted. I usually drink 2-3 iced teas when I eat out, but I couldn't finish even one. Just had a weird aftertaste. Then I ask the waitress if they have any juice (for my 3 year old) The waitress acted like I was speaking a foreign language. "Yes, little kids drink juice" I thought. She had to go ask in the back and proceeded to tell us that they have Capri Sun. Fine. Ordered that for my kid. We then go to order our food. I ordered the rib eye steak. Thought that would be a solid option since they do advertise steaks! "Oh, sorry we're all out of steaks" I try to be forgiving. Hey, we're up in Pine/Strawberry, maybe they ran out..small restaurant...I get it. I'll have the shrimp Scampi, with Parmesan Potato Wedges, and a side salad. My wife, who also was wanting some steak, had to change her order and she liked the sound of my order and did the same. My 3 year old wanted a corn dog off the kids menu with fries. The kids menu also said that her meal comes with a drink. I ask the waitress if the Capri Sun is included as the drink for the kids menu. She said, "yes". The Shrimp Scampi was one of the worst I've ever had. It came out with some kind of polenta on top. Never had it that way before, but I was cool with it. Italian joint, so why not? The shrimp had a strange aftertaste, it was lacking in flavor and there was nothing "scampi" about the shrimp. Shrimp was dry, and the typical garlic/butter/herb mixture that you expect with your shrimp scampi was almost non-existant. The parmesan potato wedges had no flavor. There was slightly melted parmesan cheese on the outside of each wedge, but absolutely no salt, no herbs or anything to make these special. The garlic bread was good as it should be at an italian restaurant. The salad was just okay. Nothing special about that either. I stole a few fries from my kids plate that were tasty. I took a small bite of her corn dog and it tasted strange as well...like it had been fried once...put away for a while, then reheated in the fryer. It wasn't good and I love a good corn dog. Pretty hard to screw up a corn dog, but this place has figured that out as well. My wife got the clam chowder instead of the garden salad with her shrimp scampi. She said it didn't taste homemade, but like it came out of a can. It wasn't advertised as homemade so fair enough. Okay she said, but nothing special. Then I go to take my 3 yr. old to the bathroom...which is stationed right next to someone's table. You open the door and there's people eating 3 feet away. Kind of uncomfortable and I feel bad for anyone who gets that table. Eating right next to someone doing their business is less than savory if you ask me. So then we get our bill. Nothing major except the Capri Sun was added to the bill as an extra charge. I asked the waitress about this, as I did confirm with her when I ordered it that it comes with the kids meal. But now, she says, well the Capri Suns are $1 more. Would have been nice of her to mention that as I ordered it, but I really didn't want to make a big deal over an extra $1. However, she confirmed it was included, and the menu says kids meals come with a drink. But whatever...it cost $1 more, no big deal, so I didn't argue any further. I was just ready to get out of there at that point. Overall the experience was less than what I had hoped for. I really wanted this mom & pop place to be special and my experience was less than. Now to be fair and possibly a saving grace for this place, is that the table next to ours ordered a large pizza with lots of toppings and it looked and smelled amazing. So maybe that's what they're good at? I don't know. Maybe if I'm in Pine/Strawberry again, I'll give their pizza a try and give them one more chance to change my mind, but I will shy far far away from the shrimp scampi. At $20 it should taste better than my kids fries and corn dog ($6 + 1 for the Capri Sun).

My boyfriend and I were spending a couple of days up in Pine, AZ. We did our research and looked up restaurants and things to do. He told me he found a review on Yelp about Mama Joe's. We arrived on a Wednesday evening, and weren't sure what time Mama Joe's was open until, so decided to save it for Thursday night. Thursday morning we drove past to check out the hours and saw open 4-8p. We went for our hike in Tonto and then did some shopping around Pine. Went back to the house and got ready for Dinner. We showed up at Mama Joe's at 7p, we walked into the restaurant and were not greeted. They looked at us like really we have customers. There was a man "the owner" who said hurry up and seat them to the hostess/server. We were seated in the second room and told to hurry up we wanted to close early. Two more people came in right behind us with their two children. I came out of the bathroom and they moved our table to the back section with no HEAT or Lights. I was shocked with the way they treated customers and people who wanted to try their food. Would rather have told us they were about to close than to rush us to order. We walked out as they didn't want us there anyways. We drove down to Sidewinders and ate delicious burgers - try the Snakebite.

Every time we are near Strawberry we have to stop here. The White Pizza is AMAZING and the best I've had anywhere. Tonight we actually drove quite a distance to get our white pizza and we were not disappointed!

As a local I have been here before, but after 4 years forgot that ...Service is a TOTAL joke. I wonder if the Owner/cook realizes how bad his staff is making his place look. Since the food is wonderfull. We were seated in the backroom that was very cold. They did turn on a wall heater for us but not all the table was warm. Since there was no one else in the room we moved the table over to the center of the room. When the server came back to the room she told us that it was not ok that we had moved the table, we were told that they might need one of the other tables (even thought there were 8 open tables) and if the owner saw it we would have to move it back!!! We came very close to walking out then!! I wish we had it only got worse not better. We ordered an starter that came after our soup and salad. We were there over two hours, and in the end were very rushed since they were trying to close up. They even turned off the heater to get us to leave saying the owner would be mad if he found out it had been on the whole time. I do not go out to eat to sit in my big coat. Over all do not go here unless you have lots of time and want to be treated like trash, and pay lots of money.

We stumbled upon this restaurant after an amazing day hike we took in Strawberry, AZ... It's easy to see, right on hwy 87. We chose 'Mama Joe's' partially because there were a handful of cars in their parking lot, but also because the PASTA SEAFOOD & STEAKS signs drew us in... Service was great at Mama Joe's... we were given ice water and fresh vegetables with ranch dressing as an appetizer 'on the house' when we sat down. They have a decent wine and beer list... we each enjoyed a drink with dinner. The eggplant parm was highly recommended (not only by our waitress but also by some guests seated nearby). I went with that and I was not disappointed. My boyfriend had the gnocci with meat sauce and he did not love it. This was a concoction that he came up with, so I guess the lesson learned is to stick with something on the menu! Both of our meals came with choice of soup or salad and garlic bread. I would say that if you happen to be in the neighborhood, go check out Mama Joe's. However, don't go out of your way just to experience the restaurant. It was a perfect meal for refueling and relaxing in a laid back environment after a long day of hiking... and you get the red checkered tablecloths and paper place mats with a map of Italy to enjoy while you wait! I did read that the deserts at Mama Joe's are really good, but we were too full to try them out... maybe next time!

Mama Joe's was 2 minutes from the cabin we were staying at, so it was the most logical place to go for dinner (plus I love Italian and had read Gabi's review). We were surprised when we walked in and were seated by the same hostess that had seated us for lunch at Nifty 50 in Pine earlier that day. Then we were stunned when we were served by our same server from lunch, the incomprable Holly (see my review for Nifty 50). Again, based on Gabi's review, I tried the eggplant parmesean and was so not disappointed!!! The eggplant is cut 3/4" thick and is fresh and cooked perfectly with just the right amount of perfectly seasoned breadding. The sauce is fabulous, the pasta done just al dente and there is a generous amount of cheese. I could only eat 1/3 of it!!! It reheats wonderfully for lunch, by the way ... Dinner came with a salad and garlic bread, both equally excellent ... the dressings are homemade in house and the ranch was outstanding. We tried the pizza the second night ... the crust dough is handmade each morning and bakes up so nicely it's almost decadent. The desserts were also fabulous. The tiramisu was good, but the caramel-fudge chocolate cheesecake was TO DIE FOR. Chocolate cheesecake with a nut brownie crust and layer of caramel in between. HEAVEN!!!!! I also hear their pistachio ice cream pie is unbelievable ... So if you're in Strawberry or Pine, give Mama Joe's a try for sure ... you will not be disappointed!

Quaint atmosphere..Husband had the special...steak with gorgonzola and portobello mushroom ravioli...to die for! I had lasagna but red sauce was not good....didn't eat any except for 2 bites. We hear the pizza is good so we will try that next time.

We ate at Mama Joe's while we were staying in Strawberry. The food was good, it came with lots of extras like antipasto and sparkling water. It was fairly priced we had an appetizer, a glass of wine, two entrees and dessert for $60 including tax and tip. The atmosphere was a little lacking however, the floor was dirty and the owner's 10 year old granddaughter was the hostess and head bus boy which was a little depressing since she obviously did not have a food handler's card and was not the cleanliest worker. While we were watching she dropped several sets of silverware on the floor and the proceeded to set tables with them. The dessert was delicious we had the tirimisu. The pasta was great we had the lasagna and the manicotti. I would definitely go back as there is not much else around here and the people were very friendly.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
