Cardo's used to be our favorite, but since it changed hands about a year or two ago it just keeps going down hill. The staff used to be consistent and pleasant. The food was REALLY good. But the cook must have quit and taken his recipes with him! The mac and cheese was to die for! Now YUCK! Wish the crew from 3 years ago would come back.

    1. Before I start, I must have gotten the LAST Pizza from the Freezer... Worst pizza ever from a restaurant. Maybe some of you that say its great, either got a fresh one, or don't really have taste buds... ok, on to my review. On Entry, place was very nicely decorated, and lighting was great.. The Bar had a lattice to break between dining room and Bar,, good job.. Waitress and Bar Staff were also very polite and nice... I ordered a mushroom pizza,,, Echhh... Bad idea,, anyways,, to save grace,, My wife ordered the prime rib with mushroom soup.. The soup was pretty good, tasted like a decent CAN, or maybe adjusted a little from a decent brand, and possibly homemade, but after the pizza incident, I would think not homemade.. But the Prime Rib was decent, Tender n juicy, melted in your mouth in some parts,, but other parts were mehh... So, I will give this place a 3rd star, just cause we might go back. The atmosphere was very warming, and the beer and service was very good.. Since Payson is a Small town, there really isn't much to choose from and this may be better than trying something else new.. Good Luck to you all,,

Food was great. Service was bad, and that is saying a lot since I sat at the bar. Took 10 mins to even see the bartender. I said hi to her and asked her if there were any specials. She didn't talk to me at all, not to ask if I wanted another drink, not to ask how my food was and not even a thank you when I paid the bill. She spent a lot of time at the end of the bar texting. She seemed to talk to the guys at the bar but not the women. I had a half Philly sub, a side Caesar and a bloody Mary. Food wad great though it came out very slow. All the NFL games are here but I'd rather go to Buffalo Bar down the road. I probably won't return even though the food was good.

Really liked this restaurant! Great litle gem up in the middle of the woods! On Friday nights they have live music, three guys singing old country songs. Nice touch to enjoy dinner. The clam chowder was top notch. Really good! I had a calzone and it was good but not great, I would have prefered a softer more dough like crust but it wasn't bad. Service was really good. The bread and balsamic reduction dip is great. Nice little restaurant and a great place to stop when you are in town.

Amazing food and the owner/server was pretty cool. We will be returning next time we are on a road trip and in the area! Thanks for making our New Year's Day special!! Us three ladies loved this place! :)

We wandered into Cardo's when we were staying in Payson this weekend and boy are we glad we did! We opted to share a medium size pizza and it was honestly the best pizza I can ever remember having. Service was great, the glass of wine generous and we had enough pizza left over for lunch the next day. We noticed a person at the next table having calzone . . . you can't believe the size of it! If we're in the area, Cardo's will certainly be on our agenda.

Nice little Italian place in Payson. Good service, good food, not much more to ask for. I had the fettuccine alfredo, very good and so big I needed to make it home. Stop in!

We stopped in here on our way home to Phoenix from camping on the rim this past Sunday afternoon. We ordered a cheese + Italian Sausage pizza to go. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It took a little longer than expected (over 20 minutes) for the pizza to get done. The pizza was very tasty. My 16-year old son thought it was very good.

Kudos to the new owners for giving the customers a quality meal at a reasonable price. I'm so glad to have Cardos back on my list of places to eat! :)

My family and I of six decided to goto Cardos Italian restaurant because we heard that they had the best pizza in town. At 5:50 pm on a Saturday night. When we entered, the restaurant was clean and we were seated. The music was a bit loud for my taste, but not intolerable. To start out with the staff was very friendly. They took our drink and appetizer order of a shrimp basket, calamari basket, and artichoke dip with chips. She then our took our food order. We ordered a kids hamburger that comes with fries and a drink, 2 subs, a manicotti dinner, lasagna, a linguini with clam sauce and a large pizza, 1/2 pepperoni 1/2 sausage. Drinks and appetizers came out very timely. But that's where everything went down hill. At 6:40pm we received 3 out of 7 items ordered. Being polite to the rest of the party, my wife and I waited to eat until all parties had received their food. We waited 15 minutes before calling attention to the manager about how long it had taken to so far to receive the remainder of our order. He was said he was sorry and apologized for the order taking so long to come out and promised that the remainder was coming out very soon and that the lasagna was only 5 minutes out. Although he had spoken the words "I'm sorry", neither myself or the party truly felt that this was the case. He did take 30 dollars off our bill for the inconvenience. Okay. It would take another 5 minutes (7:00pm) before another two items finally made it out of the kitchen, and of those two, one was the wrong item. Somehow a linguini with clam sauce looks a lot like a penne and sausage. When we complained that this was not what was ordered, the staff and the manager both argued with us about it then offered a to-go container for the incorrect item and brought out the correct item a few minutes later. His last comment before leaving was that "if we didn't like the way he ran his restaurant, feel free not to come back." The pizza followed a few minutes after that at about 7:05pm. Still not having not received the lasagna, we just requested that the lasagna be just packaged to go as we were simply fed up with the poor service. It took an additional 10 minutes to finally receive the last item, the lasagna. Soup to nuts, it took 35 minutes for the kitchen to complete an order from first delivery to last. I've eaten just the chips from the sub meal and my wife half her sub so we package them to go also. Ah, then the bill comes. The hamburger was rang up as an adult burger with fries. I brought this to the attention of the waitress and asked for it to be corrected. A few minutes later the manager returns and explains sternly and rudely to us that he has credited us 50 dollars off our bill. Really it was 45 dollars, but who's counting? All I was asking for was that we be billed for what we ordered. My wife now offended by the attitude of the manager requested his name from the waitress so she could contact the owner. She responded that "Ray" was his name. We were taking amongst ourselves that maybe this is just a bad night and perhaps we should give them another chance at a later date to see if it's really this bad all the time. The manager returns almost immediately. This is a quote from the manager: "You don't like my attitude? You're going to report me to the owner? I am the owner. Get out of my restaurant. Don't come back. I don't want to see you in my restaurant ever." At this point I am in awe. Holy crap. I've never been talked to this way by an owner or anyone in a restaurant. Never been kicked out and have never been asked not to return. I'm mean just Wow! So needless to say, the decision to try this place out later has been made for us and we will gladly oblige.

Wow just got off of the phone with someone rude that sounded irritated that we wanted to come down and eat. When we were calling just to check their hours (none listed) they were super short and told us they were closing right then.... at 8:15pm-- wow. what weird timing......................

Came to Payson to escape the heat in the valley, that didn't work out so well as temp today hit 100. Too hot to cook dinner in camp trailer. Was very pleased with the pizza and antipasto salad. The Sauce on the Cardo's Special was tasty without overpowering the ample toppings. We added chicken to the Spinach Feta pizza. The added topping made the pizza a little dry but delicious flavor. We ordered over the phone and the pizza was ready when it was quoted to be.

I love this place! You can get a raw veggie plate at happy hour! Having healthy options is important to me, but the pizza, wings, and chicken parm (grilled) are excellent!! And everything else!!

Seriously this is the BEST Italian food! We loved everything! My husband absolutely love the spaghetti with personality. Such flavors. The home made mac and cheese my daughter ordered was delicious! Can not express how impressed we all are. My brother in law got the chicken marsaloa and It was melt in your mouth good. The manicotti I ordered was packed with flavor and such a great portion. We all had take home boxes and that will be finished. You can tell the NEW owner's have really stepped it up. Prices are great family of 5 under $100 for such a great meal. Out waitress was wonderful and friendly. Even the busser was friendly and talkative. Best every expectation we had.

Food was good. We started off with the spinach artichoke dip, it came with their homemade chips which were good and a few carrots and celery sticks. Though I would've preferred more veggies then chips. I had the meatball sub, very good, my husband had their steak burger which he enjoyed. I would recommend this place.

We were on our way up to Heber for a weekend getaway and since we couldn't leave the valley until after 5 because of work we decided to stop here on the way up so we could eat at a decent hour instead of late by the time we got all the way up to Heber. This was a good choice to stop. My Mom had been here before and recommended it. So in we walked. It was kind of busy but is was Friday night. They had a live band playing. A few of the more well lubricated residence we up dancing. It looked like a fun place. The band was playing old time country music so that was good and we are in Payson so I'm sure they have both kinds of music. Country and Western. The place had a nice décor and our waiter Ralph was great. The entire experience was great. I would come back again for sure. The food was ok. But the atmosphere and the service more than made up for it. The bread they brought out was really good and they gave you an oil and vinegar reduction to dip it in which only made it better. Definitely ask for the bread. I ordered their house specialty spaghetti. Which was regular spaghetti with peppers, pepperoni and other stuff dressing it up. It was good but the sauce was just ok. If the sauce was better the whole dish would have been great. My mother and girlfriend enjoyed what they ordered as well. My girlfriend said her calzone's crust could have been a little softer. They did make my mom's Linguine and Clam Sauce special with white wine sauce instead of the cream sauce they normally serve. They both thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well and my mom even surprised me by knowing the words to one of the old country songs. I would think the band is a Friday night only thing but it is worth going back for. I will be stopping here again if I am in Payson. Italian food and country music in Payson who would have thought.

I had never eaten here before and we decided to stop in and try it for some italian food. Wow! Everything was so good! We got the hottest wings they had and they were amazing, the breadstick was really more like garlic bread but I could live with it, and my baby seemed to enjoy it. We ordered the medium margherita pizza and it was to die for, we only ate two pieces each before we were totally stuffed. Very satisfying meal and at a very reasonable price for the places up here. We actually had no problem with the service despite all the reviews saying otherwise. It wasn't too busy or crowded, and had a very nice ambiance to it. The food was so good and we were so stuffed that my husband and I felt like we were drunk leaving the place! I would recommend to anyone and I can't wait to eat here again!

I'm a local resident, and eat out a lot. Cardo's used to be great, but they changed hands. Since the new owners took over the food has been awful we couldn't even finish. The service was not great, and they were rude. You could here the owners yelling, so It was just very uncomfortable. We love Italian food it's just too bad they don't serve it.

Today my husband and myself went in for lunch again. Last time we went I was not so pleased, but he really liked his meatball sub. This time I ordered the White Calzone, and wow, it was not only huge (feeds 2 or more) it was delicious. Needless to say I am glad I gave it another try, I now know my favorite thing there. Hubby had the meatball sub, we both were happy with our meals, waitress this time seemed more experienced and quicker as well! So just to let you know the food is getting better with the new owner, happy about that, thanks!

If you're looking for overpriced frozen pizza, this is your place. I usually don't leave reviews, but I feel like I had to save someone else the trouble. I can't vouch for the other food. The place was kind of dirty and our table was sticky. Our waitress clearly hated her job. Other than that it was ok. :-)

Amazing service, good food and reasonable prices. I've been here a few times and keep coming back every time I'm in town. The spinach ravioli was really good. Covered in alfredo sauce. The owner even came out to make sure everything was ok. Nice guy! Rustic decor, nothing fancy but not ghetto, either. Their pizza is outstanding, too!

Stopped by Cardo's this week for dinner. Was very pleasantly surprised, haven't been here in a few years and heard they have made changes for the better. Food was awesome. I had the spinach roll lasagna and my better half had the meat lasagna, both were very good. We also split the fried ravioli appetizer that was served with a side of marinara sauce, huge portions! What I also found impressive is that a crew of hotshots (about 20-30) arrived at the same time we did and took up most of the restaurant and the staff never appeared stressed at all. We love our hotshots up here :) Well done Cardos!

Great Italian food, calzones, pizza, salad and wings! You have to go there on Wednesdays for their spaghetti special... Ralph is a great waiter and has a great memory for remembering your favorites. Stop by for a relaxing meal, they don't disappoint.

An exceedingly average restaurant. Ambiance This is Payson's alternative to something like the 'Olive Garden'. It's not particularly fancy, but not terribly casual either. Price Too much for what you get, but it's not 'over the barrel highway robbery' either. Quality Meh. Had both the pasta and the pizza. Both were forgettable (kind of like how they forgot to give me my salad). Service. Polite but hard worked and a bit rushed. (This causes them to occasionally forget important parts of your order). It doesn't help that they will also mutter condescending comments about other staff members under their breath (but within earshot of customers). Overall, a pretty but ultimately very forgettable restaurant.

Have passed the place numerous times - usually filling up at the Safeway gas station next door. Decided to go in. Quaint decor. Place was virtually empty. Ordered a calzone and 10 minutes later was told they had no ricotta cheese. Odd for an Italian restaurant!?!?!?! Food was decent - service was slower that molasses. Would come back in a pinch but otherwise will eat elsewhere. Had higher expectations ... too bad!

  • Soo Jin M.

The artichoke dip was good but its odd to serve with chips (albeit homemade and delicious) and veggie sticks. The pizza wasn't bad, but was kind of like a healthy pizza hut pizza. It looked like Pizza Hut but the crust was airy and crunchy like a huge cracker. The sauce was ok and cheese was good, but definitely not enough cheese and need more even coverage with sauce. The pizza was also a bit bland without adding parmesan and red pepper flakes. Maybe a hit of italian seasoning would make it better.

My buddy and I decided to get out of Phoenix for the day and visit Payson and its gorgeous surrounding area to see the 'New Moon' out east from the 260. I told him we would stop at a gas station and ask the locals where the best food would be and this place won unanimously. The staff was awesome, friendly and courteous. The food would get a grade B+, and the setting would get a B-. First up, the staff. The people were super nice and cool to talk to, no complaints there. Second, the setting. I, for one liked the music, it was prob set to BPM from Sirius XM because all I kept hearing were club bangers, ahahahaha! But, it is an Italian restaurant. I expected jazz, big band, Sinatra, or Italian music. Not only that, the music was tooooooooooooooooooooooo low. You could hear conversations and when I go out to eat, I want to feel lively as if no ones listening to my conversations. I felt like I was dealing with missile codes when talking with my friend and he was sitting right next to me! Lastly, the food. The chicken Marsala was good, the chicken....it was so-so. Everyone raved that it was the greatest, but it was a little too soggy (if that makes sense). But the dish itself was superb, highly recommend. One tip to the chef, clean around the edge of the plate for better presentation. I know it's not a 5 star restaurant at $60 a plate, but presentation counts. The Cesar salad was a disgrace and really scared me. Okay, if your croutons are soggy, odds are, there's a bit to much dressing on the salad (I sent it back). There's room for improvement in this field. The place is nice, the staff is awesome, and the food was decent. I say go and experience it for yourself. My buddy and I enjoyed it, we hope you do too.

Stopped in for lunch. Service was great. Chips were not so good. We split the Philly and it was good not great. I bet if we had more time and had ordered pizza we would have been more impressed. They do have a nice bar too. The decor lends itself to being more of a nice night out for dinner and drinks.

  • David P.

Went back with a party of six. Everyone really enjoyed their food BUT once again the service was horrible. Waitress got our drinks and our order, disappeared until our food arrived and that was it, no refills no checking to see if everything was okay or not. Only two other tables in the place at lunch time. I think if they can fix their service issues they would be a lot busier.

  • Brianna M.

On our way to our cabin we ordered a medium pizza to go for $14 and some change. They said it would be ready in 10minutes...35 min later we are still sitting there waiting. It took almost 40 minutes! Then the host brings out this dinky pizza that tasted like a frozen cardboard pizza. And I think it actually was a frozen pizza because it had the round cardboard under the pizza in the box. Gross. not worth $14, not worth my time and I'll never return. Skip this place and Go to Pizza Hut next door.

We have heard that this restaurant has changed hands yet again. Does anyone know this for sure? We had excellent food and service here for years since moving from the valley. However, we have had diminishing experiences (and portion sizes) at this place over the previous year. For years they had a great Fish Special on Friday, Spaghetti on Wednesday and an Italian Goulash Soup that was exceptional. We have stopped coming for the Fish Fry due to the poor quality and taste. The Soup now has few of the original ingredients and is worse than generic canned. Our last experience with the Spaghetti Special (at $15 a plate) - will be our last. The meat balls were so dry and hard you could not cut them with a steak knife.

Quick and friendly service. Perfect night for a pitcher of beer, hot wings and pizza. Wings were hot without being too hot and lots of vinegar in sauce. Pizza crust was crispy and toppings were generous. Sauce could have used more garlic and salt but otherwise very tasty.

New to Payson, Trying out local resturants Ordered chk wings was told it would take 10 min, half hour later still waiting, I still don't know how they got the chicken so tough To bad it was a nice place

Food is decent but service is bad. Lots of local drunks hanging out in the bar cackling. Not an environment to take a family. Waitress seemed oblivious to bar rats disturbing the patrons. Avoid this place.

If you find yourself in Arizona's most beautiful small town of Payson, you have to go to Cardo's. It's not just pizza. Try their Garlic Cheese sticks. MMMMMM..... they are the Italian food's version of a cheese crisp. YUM!

Let's See: 9 minutes and 32 seconds after I arrive they take my order. 9 minutes and 7 seconds after they take my order, my salad arrives. Almost 13 minutes after my salad arrived, my dinner arrived. Total time there close to an hour-Food was fine, but I don't have time to sit around waiting...Only got 3 stars because the food was good.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
