Payson has limited non-chain eating options. You might be tempted to pass this place by, but give it a try. Sure, nothing fancy from the outward appearance, but they have some great breakfast burritos and awesome salsas. Plus, the next foodie paradise is a long drive away.

Burrito was good Beans were good, a little salty. Salsas were good. Coke was watered down. Service was not the best, but what can you expect I guess. Would I stop by again if I'm traveling through and want a burrito, yes.

excellent food, cheap. A dive. Staff not super friendly but not hostile.

I was disappointed with the taco menu when I saw it. No cuerito. No tripas. No orejas. No sesos. No lengua. No cabeza. I ended up ordering a taco de adobada and a taco de carnitas, along with a large horchata. The adobada was tasty, but a little bit oily; I dripped red oil everywhere. The carnitas was better; it was crispy fried pork goodness topped with guacamole. The horchata was very good, so good that I paid $1.50 to have my extra large styrofoam cup refilled. Until I find a taqueria in Payson that sells tacos made with the tastier bits, I could make do with the tacos de carnitas from Alfonso's.

One of the very best chorizo egg (no potato - my choice) burritos I've had! DH got it with potatoes. Chorizo was somewhat spicy, amazing flavor, not greasy. Tortilla was soft slightly grilled flour, not thick or doughy - the nice thin kind. Salsa bar had at least 4 different salsas, I got red & green, both so good I went back & forth on bites doused with each. Big juicy chucks of limes for tacos & sliced cucumbers too. Burritos took maybe 8 mins. Bathroom out in the backyard. Not a palace but clean enough & soap. As everyone says, PERFECT dive Mexican food, ahhhh...

Recommended as the best breakfast burritos in Payson by the locals. We were not disappointed! Home made tortilla, farm fresh eggs, fabulous chorizo and a SALSA BAR! Anyone who knows me knows I live for spicy food and I was over the moon at all the choices. Avocado crema, tomatillo, salsa fresco, burnt salsa. .. and more. I will definitly be back every time I come through town.

I am a huge fan of this place. Amazing staff, the most amazing food, and out of this world salsa! Highly recommend this place to anyone.

If you're looking for a quick yet local and decent "fast food" type meal while in Payson, this is your spot. It's divey and doesn't have any frills but they certainly know how to make some good Mexican food! The service is friendly and quick as well. Their food is pretty decent fast Mexican food and I especially loved their homemade tortillas. I noticed that they are voted the best Breakfast burrito by locals and I agree! Not that I am a local of have had many others in Payson but this one was pretty amazing. There are about six different breakfast burrito combos to choose from. I ordered the bacon, egg and potato and it hit the spot. Make sure you visit the salsa bar before you bite in. Food is cheap and good and the service is quick and friendly. What more can you ask for!

Excellent lunch when passing through Payson. Got the fish tacos and a carne asana burrito. Good food, good value, quick service.

We stopped by on our way up north. It's similar to a filibertos type place. We had the super nachos ($7.15). They had beans, carne asada, pico, guac, sour cream, and cheese. They were pretty tasty and filling enough to split. The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful. Would stop by again.

Food was good... Quick, hot and accurate. Sitting area was messy tables were not wiped off so it was kinda dirty looking. It was steady when we stopped in. The salsa was all spicy nothing medium or mild which was a bummer. It was snowy out but the floor was dry which was good. I would go back again :)

The food was good. The steak was flavorful. I will be back next time we visit Payson.

Looks like any of a thousand similar places in Phoenix, but in Payson they're a little harder to come by. Stopped in for a breakfast burrito and a churro, and I was absolutely satisfied. Nothing ridiculously extraordinary, just really tasty.

The reviews are right, not much to look at but this place does serve some decent Mexican food. Nothing that I would really go out of my way to get but I would frequent this place again anytime I am in the area and want Mexican food. The rolled tacos were fresh and the breakfast burrito boasted some crispy bacon and tasty eggs in a fresh tortilla. It may look like there is no seating inside but there is. Local college students get a discount!

If i lived closer, i'd get big as a barn in no time because i would eat here every day. Best Mexican food in northern arizona, bar none! The building is old but well maintained and very clean, and service is fast and friendly with huge servings for not a lot of money.

I can't believe the positive reviews. We had the worst experience we've had since moving to payson. A very rude person behind the counter. Tempted to leave when they didn't have coffee to go the breakfast burrito. Water only available in styrofoam cups. The star is for price and fresh homemade tasting tortilla. Insides of my steak burrito were dry as a bone. Husband spicy burrito wasn't. They offer sauces to put on yourself but didn't help. To top it off the place was filthy and not that busy. Had to ask for rag to clean table. When counter person came and did it, left a sopping wet seat that I had to dry with small paper napkins. We will never return many better, cleaner Mexican restaurants in town.

Great taco stand food. The place is a bit of a dive but the food and service is good. I don't know why the Taco Bell would bet get any business here as the food is way better for the same price.

Good food at great prices - wish there was a 4.5 setting Stopped there on a Wednesday afternoon. Quite busy for the middle of the day. We were just passing through and asked a local where to get some good Mexican food. He pointed down the street and said "you want good food, go to Alfonso's. It's not much to look at but it is the best in Payson". He wasn't joking that it is not much to look at. They really need to improve or even move to a new location. My wife and I ate outside at one of the 4 tables - there are 6-7 tables inside but they were a bit on the 'used' side. They have a large menu with many different variations, it was hard to pick. I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito with Enchilada sauce. It was very good, especially considering the low price. We will definitely be going there again the next time we are heading through town.

Since discovering this place I stop by every time I'm in Payson. They have the best Breakfast burritos around! The Chorrizo burrito is really good!!

This place rocks, great basic down home mexican prepared well with fresh ingrediants. If you like menudo try it here, it's the bomb. Man I love these mom and pop places that do it right!

I can honestly say this is the most "authentic" Mexican food, in all of Arizona. It's synonymous with any dive in Mexico that I've been to, and I love it! If you think Filibertos is "real Mexican," you'll be elated with Alfonso's! I introduced my boyfriend here last weekend, and he was definitely a fan!- My earliest memory of trying Carnitas was here & their Carnitas burrito is insane. For a total of $9.17 we got two burritos generously loaded with pork, pico de gallo & guacamole. While driving through Payson, this is a must-stop.

Really good breakfast burritos. Fantastic and friendly staff. The only thing about Alfonso's the salsa bar ranges from hot to inferno, so if you have someone in your group that is sensitive to spicy food , you might want to have a bottle of mild Pace with you.

This is my first time leaving a negative review. The woman who took our order was the rudest person I have ever ordered food from. Halfway through my burrito I noticed there where cockroaches crawling out from under the door where they were preparing the food. My family and I counted three of them during the 15 minutes we were there. There where flys flying around the open salsa's. My daughter needed to use the restroom before we we left, and there was no lock on the door, and she couldn't even use the toilet because it was clogged with the remains of whoever used it before. There were also paper towels all over the bathroom floor with poo smeared on them. It was honestly the most disgusting place we have ever eaten at. We couldn't even finish our food. We ate down the street at a nice Mexican restaurant called El Rancho. It was very nice and they knew how to treat the customers. We will never be going back to this place. I only recommend eating here if you don't mind having hepatitis or some other disease.

LOVE a good taco stand, and after Yelping it versus the other competition in town, Alphonso's won our interest. I was thrilled to find sopes on the menu -- they're tasty hand-molded shapes of corn masa that are deep fried to make a sturdy little boat for toppings. Of the nine or so meat fillings, I chose the adobada, which earned the server's respect for being an excellent choice. It looked in the photo menu like they came with a full compliment of garnishes so I ordered a side of guacamole to top it off. The service was friendly and prompt, and even tough its an order-then-sit joint he checked in on us a few times to chat about the food. When he noticed I didn't get my side of guac he brought it right away. It was tangy and fresh with more of a salsa consistency than a mash, making it pourable onto the sopes. The sopes were crisp on the outside and cooked on the inside (they can taste doughy if not done right) and had awesome structural integrity making them true handheld delights. The serving of adobada on top was generous but not too much, and there was plenty of garnish: a drizzle of crema, shredded lettuce, melted cheese and fresh tomatoes. The adobada meat itself was diced in a thin brothy gravy with mild chile flavor. I like it hot so salsas kicked it up as desired. The spanish rice was fluffy and good with carrot discs. The refritos were rich and we suspect started with lard (sorry, vegetarians, but my husband agrees -- ask first?) making them rich and yummy. I like my beans a bit creamier and less stick-blended, but they had a nutty kind of chew that was different than other beans that are more typical of Arizona. Not unpleasant. My husband's cheese enchilada was bathed in house-made red sauce that bravely tasted of chile. The kid loved his burrito enchilada-style and it wasn't too hot for a boy, though some sensitive kids might object and prefer it plain. Lastly, my husband's adobada burrito had pico laced with lots of cilantro and guac inside -- he ordered it with beans added and highly recommends it. The tortilla was an appropriately strong yet semi-transparent vessel for the burrito bomb. At least two customers walked away with stacks of tortillas alone tucked under their arms like a huge sunday newspaper. It is good to know there's tasty Mex to be found in Payson that isn't a sit-down affair, but casual enough for us after muddy creek-hopping all morning. We'll be back to try the carne asada fries!

The carnitas burritos were excellent - good spot for a quick bite on the way home from hunting or fishing. The gal working the counter seemed to wish customers wouldn't keep bothering her irritating stuff like ordering and handing her money - ergo 3 stars.

This place is a little shack. So, it's kind of questionable when you walk up to the counter to place your order. Two beef enchiladas, a bowl menudo (only sold on weekends), and a diet Coke. So ..... The diet Coke was kind of flat :-( Although, I quickly forgot about the lack of carbonation ...... The menudo was actually pretty real super darn good!! It had a great spicy flavor and stuffed full of tripe and hominy. It was a big bowl for a little under $6. I was really impressed. In fact, this is probably some of the best menudo I have ever had! I forgot to ask if they have white menudo. The enchiladas were beef with a red sauce. The red sauce was tangy with a slight sweetness to it. Kind of unique, but really good. There were tons of big meat chunks and cheese stuffed in the tortilla. The meat had a great flavor and enjoyable spiciness to it. Also, it was surprisingly tender. I overheard other customers raving about the chicken and how tender and flavorful it was. The only complaint was from one lady who thought they gave her too much food. (I was tempted to ask her for her leftovers!) The service was friendly and the food was ready in a reasonable amount of time. I'm a very big person and I felt they had great portions at a fair price. I spent about $13 and was stuffed. Will I be going back? You better believe I will be stopping there EVERY time I go through Payson!

Food is great! If you like places like Filiberto's, you'll enjoy this place. The only reason that I'm giving them 4 stars is because the bathrooms are laughingly mediocre... You have to see them to believe them. Skip Taco Bell and go here!

I have never been for lunch so can't comment but if you like breakfast or brunch it is the best! Breakfast burritos, steak or bacon can not be best! Wow big, fresh off the grill! Place is small drive in type but does have place there to sit but pick up and take home too!

Good veggie burrito-- perfect for a pre-road trip lunch. The service is also good, particularly because of the extremely friendly cashier. It's your typical Mexican dive, so don't expect anything too fancy, but if you're in the mood for something simple and tasty, it'll do.

So yes, this is very good Mexican food! You don't come here for the ambiance, but the food is authentic and great. We stopped here while driving through Arizona, and are very glad that we did!!

I really wanted to like it. After getting a smart phone I've loved trying little places rather than the chains. The food that was great was really great. The beans were good, my taco was good.... But my husband got a different burito than what he ordered and my kids bean and cheese burrito had chilis in it. But the trash was overflowing and the bathrooms were too gross to take my kids. We waited for a gas station up the road. Also, the register lady was not patient with us as we tried to figure out our order for our family of 5 by looking at the big poster on the wall. Won't go back.

We have been in a Mexican food drought since moving to Boston (Mexican food in Boston is no good). Their carnitas are amazing!! Their homemade tortillas are on point. The food was great. Love it. If we ever pass through, we will be back.

Solid traditional Mexican taco stand. Very cheap. Very good sauces. Food is not too heavy or greasy. Servers are very friendly. A nice surprise in an out-of-the-way town!

This place seems to be a favorite of the locals. The food is great, the portions perfect, and the prices very fair. It's an uber low-key type of place you feel comfortable in to just relax and have some good Mexican food. It might be just a little TOO low-key for some tastes... No pretentiousness here. Unless you're a teen, not the place you wanna take a lady on a first date. The beans have flavor!!! Hallelujah! They've also spiced and marinated the meats. And for you nacho lovers out there, the nachos come with steak-y meat, not ground beef. Yay! The bathroom facility almost seems like a joke being played on you at first. You head through a door labeled RESTROOMS and find yourself outdoors. Not to fear, just walk to the right and you'll find a perfectly fine clean restroom. I'm definitely coming back here again.

Good stuff -- definitely something of a typical Mexican food dive, but this one is in Payson, where one such place was badly needed. For some reason, I almost always decide to start out by trying the bean and cheese burrito at these kinds of places, which is what I did on this occasion. The burrito, as is typical, was kind of bland..... which makes it the perfect vessel for a flavorful salsa. Both the red and the green salsas at Alfonso's are awesome -- the green salsa being extra spicy, as it should be. Next, as is common in our household, I got to also try my wife's unfinished burrito. She ordered the chicken something or other, and I think this was one of my favorite chicken burritos ever. Seriously, the chicken was stewed with plenty of veggies before being shredded and stuffed in a fresh tortilla. Excellent! I look forward to future Sunday/Monday afternoon visits on the way home from the mountains. We may even try stopping in on a Thursday/Friday night next time if we get into town early enough.

Thanks to Yelp, we passed on another restaurant in Payson that I don't really like, and instead went to Alfonso's. It's a laid back restaurant, clean, efficient, and quick. Their menu is on the wall with pretty accurate pictures of their food. Or so we thought...beware of the Alfonso's burrito, which on the wall looks to be a regular, large, burrito. It's humongous!!! They had to use several tortillas, as I don't think they make tortillas big enough for such a burrito. My husband and were laughing histerically when we saw it. He ate about 1/4 and still had enough for him and my 2 kids for dinner...all for $7.75 I had a carne asada quesadilla. The meat was really good, not grizzly, perfectly seasoned. Also pretty large and it included guacamole at no extra charge. I didn't even touch my rice and beans cause I was stuffed. And in response to a post from 2010, I have to say that their bathroom was extremely clean. I always expect laid-back, highway restaurants to have nasty bathrooms, thinking every hiker/camper out there is doing their business in these bathrooms. They had obviously just mopped, I could tell by the chemical fumes, but the sink and toilet were super clean. I always appreciate this. We'll be back.

Some of the best Carne Asada I've had in a long time!

This place has got one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. The potatoes are little mini ones that are delicious. Hot sauce is ok an I'd give it a 5 but I need to have a couple of other items first before I bump them to the next level.

  • Catherine B.

The burritos here are pretty good, but I still cannot forget the smell of the restaurant as I was waiting for my food. Mind you, I have a very sensitive nose, but it was just grossing me out. It literally smelled like an uncleaned port-o-potty in there. i was thinking "perhaps they just haven't cleaned the bathroom yet, but I needed to go so I asked where it was. Although the bathroom was indeed uncleaned it still smelled better in there than in the actual restaurant! So gross, I think if we have to stop there again I will make my husband go in to order so I don't have to experience the stench.

Breakfast burrito had a most satisfying flavor. Ultimate taquitos were pretty good but not quite ultimate. The taquitos themselves were your standard frozen, 30 in a box type of roll.

The food here is quite good. Some of the better Mexican food I've had in Arizona. Good food price, quantity, quality, and service. Great environment for those of you looking for a grungy little Mexican place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
