TASTY! Passing through from Rio Rico to Sonoita today and my brother's jaw dropped when he saw the "open" sign on the sidewalk (I guess he thought they closed down a while ago). Two words: delicious pizza! Two more words: Velvet Elvis (there really is one... on the wall... watching you eat). Their wheat crust is so chewy & delicious - the perfect vessel for all those tasty toppings. Service on a Saturday afternoon was quick and friendly. The side salad was surprisingly large and full of actual veggies (most pizza joints like to take shredded lettuce, drench it in ranch, and call it a side salad... not the case here!) But a note - the "avocado dressing" for your salad is really just guacamole. Don't get me wrong, it was good guac... but I prefer dressing on my salad. Or some chips on the side. I'll definitely come back by here on my next visit to southern Arizona/northern Mexico.

How can one even begin with this place. We had the lentil-quinoa soup which was beyond this world, the Ein Kartoffel pizza which had a whole wheat crust that was amazing and a homemade tiramisu with the perfect blend of custard and ladyfingers. All of this served by the nicest Ecuadorean owner ever. If I could give this place 6 stars I could... Who knew the sleepy little town of Patagonia hid such a treasure. Be forewarned, everything for miles tends to close around 8 at night, even on the weekends. Still, after a whole day of wine tasting, the food here was just what I needed.

After a couple of trips to the Patagonia area, we were jazzed to actually find VE open. Too bad the excitement didn't last all the way through the meal. Don't get me wrong. The food is definitely A-OK. The staff tries hard. The atmosphere is adequately trendy. But $13 for five pieces of Romaine with a few nuts and 4 pieces of cold chicken? Granted, the Bleu Cheese dressing was as good as we've had. But still. Then came a $10 Calzone that the server had described as "big." Again, quite tasty. But big it weren't. Still hungry, we ordered a $4.75 slice of cheese pizza to split. I'll grant you, these folks do interesting things with whole-wheat dough. It's almost pastry-like. But as pizza goes -- meh. Had much, much better. If we were in the market for a $12,000 rug, or if we were stuck for a place to eat in Patagonia -- we'd probably go back. But $40+ with a tip to split a salad, an entree, a slice of pizza, and two beers just seems a bit steep. Good luck, folks. But then, I'm sure there're enough hipster dufus types and new-ager kool kids passing through to keep you going a few days a week for a long, long time.

Mercy, I wish we lived close enough to this place to go once a week! Also, they started serving breakfast the day after our visit, and I hope they do as smashingly well at that as they have on their pizza (plus) menu. Buen provecho!

I hadn't eaten here in over 10 years, but was glad to find that it is still a great place to stop while in Patagonia or Sonoita. I really love the wheat crust and the pizzas they have created have some great flavor combinations. I really like the one with the green chile sauce & artichoke hearts, "El Mariachi Blanco". Also really like the pizza with caponata, "El Siciliano". The night we were there they were out of salad, which they used to be quite good. I feel like the interior space is much bigger than it was back when it opened. There used to be quite a lunch crowd. But, it was easy to get a table on a Sunday night. Check this place out as it is one of the best pizza places in Southern Arizona!

I rarely give 5 stars, because as someone said, no one is perfect to deserve 5 stars! However, considering its location, in the sleepy and picturesque town of Patagonia in Southern Arizona, this is truly a gem. I follow a plant-based diet, and my requests were accommodated. My Vegan pizza was AMAZING! Cilantro pesto sauce, topped with fresh zucchini, mushrooms, and black olives .... delicious just does not seem to give it enough merit! IT was the best pizza I have had in all of my life! The crust was perfect, whole wheat. And could not resist the beet juice .... wow! All the more reason to return to Patagonia.

As everybody already said, the wheat crust is really good! Tastes fresh and delicious! Loved it! They have variety and more different pizza than most places. Will come again with great pleasure!

We got "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" Pizza and it was pretty good! We would for sure have it again. It has a excellent decor and a wonderful patio.

I've been here five times in the space of a little more than a year (two separate visits to Patagonia) and i've loved it every time. The excellent food, the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the simple Southwest decor combine to make this place feel like home away from home. My fiancé has the good fortune of being able to digest gluten (wheat protein) with no problems, unlike me. He rates the pizza and the dinner rolls highly. They also have calzones. Note for those with a gluten-intolerance: you can easily eat gluten-free here. I didn't ask extensively about gluten-free menu items, so i don't know if it's appropriate for celiacs, but the one question i did ask (flour used in the soup?) was answered knowledgeably by the cook. The rest was easy to figure out because salad ingredients are listed on the menu. The salads are fresh and absolutely delicious meals unto themselves. The daily soups are equally delicious -- they recently had a fresh corn chowder that was the best i've ever had. They always have two or three special entrees that are not pizza -- tonight i had the New Mexico lamb (i think that was the name), braised in a yummy chili sauce. Hearty and just spicy enough. It came with rice pilaf and a small, simple marinated mushroom side salad. The mushrooms were a delightful, unexpected treat while the pilaf fine, but not noteworthy. The short list of wines (about 6) are mostly organic and are well-described on the menu. The glass of Italian red i ordered (a Sangiovese/Merlot blend) was complex and got better with every sip. They also have a hibiscus margarita that we both though was more interesting and delicious than a standard margarita. Their juices --two different blends -- are wonderful. The one with beets is our favorite.

Exceptionally good food, great service and a family atmosphere. We came in as a group of six and shared a large Chicken Saltimbocca and a large El Sassy. The sauces and toppings were remarkable. The fresh dough makes fantastic crust foe the pizza and calzones, and even the appetizer rolls.

I have been eager to go here for years. What a disappointment! Worst pizza I have had in years. Boxed pizza from the grocery store is better. The whole wheat crust was thick and doughy. Seriously, our pizzas were not cooked enough. The toppings were barely warm. Elvis would be embarrassed. I would not recommend this place at all. Salads were good but way overpriced. The only nice thing I can say is that staff was great. When in Patagonia, go to Mercedes Cafe for some excellent Mexican fare. Great chile relents. Their enchilada sauce is obviously homemade.

By way of the name I expected decor on the tacky side. I imagined ordering at a counter, giant new york style slices, some independent touch or another.......nothing of the sort. This place is gorgeous, as far as pizza joints go. The floor is pretty, the walls are pretty, the chairs are pretty and only one velvet Elvis hangs among other works of curious art. So, naturally, the pizza is gourmet. You're served at your (pretty little) table. It's a little 'spendy' and if you're looking for a slab of traditional pizzeria grease you'll be disappointed. But if you're feeling adventurous, like driving way the hell out to Patagonia in the first place, may I recommend the "Southwest Diva". Sun dried tomatoes, pesto, feta.....all yummy things in God's eyes.

Well worth the trip to this rural area, we were very pleasantly surprised to find such classy surroundings and great quality food here. My recommendation, sit outside on the patio if it's available. Also, the Guadalupe (a salad) with a glass of white wine. Definitely a place you can relax and enjoy your experience.

  • Christian D.

I absolutely love this place. I do believe they have the best pizza I have ever had. I came here after the first time I read about it in Arizona Highways, and I just wish I'd found it earlier. Never a bad meal, never a bad experience here. The beer selection is good, the service is great, the decor is outstandingly quirky, and did I mention, THE PIZZA IS OUTSTANDING. No? I'd mentioned that? Well, I'll say it again: THE PIZZA IS OUTSTANDING. There is one pizza on the menu with Incan quinoa flour that requires 24 hours notice to have. I'm racking my brain and I can't remember if I ever actually had it. I know I called in for it one time and then had to cancel. I have always been curious what it was like. The next time I'm in the area, I will make sure to plan ahead.

We were staying up the way at The Spirit Tree Inn and the name of the pizza joint was intriguing. It is great gourmet pizza in a very small town. The whole wheat crust is awesome as the base to some of the interesting toppings. My hubby and I had a super fresh and tasty Greek Salad to start. I had the very refreshing Limonada Rosa to quench my thirst. Then our El Sassy pizza arrived. Yummy!!! Went back another night and had the Cara Mia pizza. Very different and simplistic in the toppings to the El Sassy but, oh so tasty. By the way the namesake velvet "Elvis" picture is discreetly placed on the side wall to the register. The decor is tasteful when we visited. Hand loomed wool rugs decorated the walls. If only I could afford to buy the lovelies for myself, someday.

This is my new fave pizza joint in AZ! I see more roadtrips to Patagonia in my future! I read that Governor Janet referred to Velvet Elvis as an "Arizona Treasure" so I made sure to check it out. So glad I did. The pizza was so good.....quite large too. The server made a big deal of presenting it to my kid, like he was showing a bottle of wine before pouring the drink! So sweet! The crust they use is the tastiest I've ever had. It's made of a wheat flour but its got a hint of sweetness to it that merges so well with the tangy sauce. I dream about that pizza crust! I warmed up the leftovers two days later and it was heaven all over again! Go get some!

This place has some of the best and most creative pizza you can find - and you wouldn't expect to find it in such a little town. Amazing crust, lots of vegetarian options and the daily soups are usually vegan and excellent. Service can be a little slow when they get busy, but it's always friendly and the atmosphere is great.

  • Cedechan J.

Not sure why it's called velvet Elvis, there in no velvet, and only one painting of Elvis. Food was ok. We got the white sauce pizza, the first one on the menu with some long name, it tasted ok, it was a little cold, and the creme sauce tasted like it came from a can. Also it didn't seem like it was Baked as a whole. Seemed like the crust was baked then the toppings put on after.... Service was good tho. It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't go back.

My friend and I asked several locals where to have dinner in Patagonia when we traveled there recently on a birding excursion. The answer was "Velvet Elvis." The place was charming and had a variety of menu choices beyond the much touted pizza. We each selected one of the nightly specials. She had eggplant roll-ups and I had lamb stew. Both were delicious and filling! The next day, we returned for lunch, succumbing to the call of the pizza. We selected "The Exorcist," a delightful concoction of roasted red pepper, basil, Gorgonzola, roasted garlic and mozzarella, and were not disappointed!

Delicious pizza to please even the pickiest pizza eater in my family. And the hibiscus margaritas make the afternoon melt away. Beautiful decor and great service in a easygoing atmosphere make this a must stop in southern AZ.

After lolling about at some of the wineries near Elgin and Sonoita, we decided food was very much needed, so we drove until Velvet Elvis caught our eye. The decor was artsy Southwestern and eclectic, and the pizza was fabulous. We ordered the Southwest Diva, which along with a (rather skimpy) salad was filling enough for four of us (one of whom can sometimes eat an entire pizza on his own -- though he begs to differ). The crust seemed to be made of whole wheat, and it was tasty. The sauce was also interesting, but in a good way. It had a pesto-cilantro-magnifico zest to it. The pizza ain't cheap, but it was worth the extra expense for the quality and unique flavor. On a warm day, try to sit out on the patio to take in the view of the mountains. If it's too cold (or hot, this being Arizona), be sure to sit facing the windows!

The location is a little bit of a drive, but it is on a winding unencombered road through beautiful terrain so no problem. The patio and inside is gorgeous, all the bright eye catching colors. The homemade food is a delight to the pallet. It is such a treat to come here, have never been disappointed.

Velvet Elvis is the best place to eat in Patagonia. Cecilia and her staff are very friendly and welcoming as soon as you walk in the door. The ingredients are fresh... the pizza crust is to die for. Salads are creative and well put together. Try one of her specials for a real treat. I sometimes would get a whole pizza and heat the slices up in the oven the next day for a super tasty lunch.

Velvet Elvis is a charming little pizzeria in Patagonia, AZ. I went to Sonoita for wine tasting, stayed in Patagonia at a B&B. On the way in, we passed the Velvet Elvis and knew by the name, Christmas lights, and number of people in the restuarant that it would be a gem! It was! The food is fantastic. The Santa Fe salad had a great dressing, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Pizza was delicious. I definitely would recommend eating lunch or dinner here while in Sonoita/Patagonia. It's worth it!

Down in Patagonia for the Fall Fest and booth food wasn't looking satisfying so over to finally try the Velvet Elvis. The place has a reputation and so was packed. Out front seating packed as well. Fortunately we got a picnic table across the street by the old train station and so returned to get a large cheese and mushroom pizza to go. Even if all you want is a slice, get a whole pie as it really isn't much more expensive than a single piece. The crust is an in-house handmade wheat deal with good crunch. The cheese is nothing special but still tasty (it is afterall pizza!), but the sauce had great seasoned flavors. Very good sauce--without it I'd have stopped at 3 stars. The other nice thing was that even with the place full, we had our pizza nice and hot in 15 minutes even though we were told the wait would be 20. Hopefully next time I'm in town we can eat inside and I'll see more of what the restaurant itself is like.

Went there on a weekend night and their sign and website said they were open until 8:30. We got there at 8:00 and they said they were closed. The owners were very rude about it too. If they close at 8 they need to change their sign to say they close at 8. one star.

Good pizza in small town Patagonia. It can be a hit or miss and it's expensive ($22 for a Pizza). Love the interior, Amer indian w/ Elvis kitsch. I've gotten good Pizza or burnt Pizza.

This place serves some of the most interesting pizzas I have ever eaten. And they are delicious! We tried two 10" pies: Ein Kartoffel Pie ($12)--consisting of red sauce, sliced baked potatoes marinated in olive oil and garlic, green onion, roasted red peppers, smoked gouda, and mozzarella--and El Mariachi Blanco ($12.50)--consisting of green chili and jalapeno cream cheese sauce, capers, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, garlic, and sundried tomatoes. I was intrigued at the thought of potatoes on pizza and was not disappointed. The crust on the pizzas is hearty and I think made with whole wheat; I felt healthy eating it instead of feeling like I was ingesting valueless simple carbs, which is how I usually feel eating pizza. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was laid-back and the food was unique but tasty. Be sure to check them out if you are in Patagonia; there aren't too many eating options, and this is one of the best.

Wow. After so many glowing reviews, we just had to try this place. Big mistake. This restaurant struggles to attain mediocrity. We were advised we could share everything. Ordered the Lentil-Quinoa soup to share, which arrived in one bowl (no second bowl for sharing), with one soup spoon and one teaspoon. Although having many ingredients, it was bland and tasteless. Progresso does a much better job! We followed this with the Ein Kartoffel (potato) pizza. Hard crust, with the only discernible flavor being the hot pepper flakes liberally sprinkled on it. Crust tasted like it came from Pillsbury, out of the refrigerator section of a local supermarket. Very, very disappointed (particularly considering how expensive this restaurant is) after all the decent reviews we read. We won't be going back.

This place is way the fuck out in the middle of nowhere, y'all. No wonder the town is called Patagonia. Cute little place, but if you run out of gas, you're pretty much SOL. So we were visiting my mother down in the AZ and natch decided to hit whatever wineries were in the vicinity. We headed down to Elgin and stopped here on the way for lunch. I wasn't hungry, but I wanted a vegetable juice (they have beet-ginger- apple and other green fresh pressed veggie juice on the menu), but the machine was broken. Great, i'll have water then. BF and mom ordered beer and their most popular pie, the Good, Bad, & Ugly i think? It was def bad and ugly but not good. They complained heartily about it, so i sampled a bite and it pretty much sucked; plus, it was cold when it came to the table. The service was also pretty bad. In that I don't make it down to the Patagonia area often (ever), I won't return. They have a sign that says they are among the top 25 restaurants in AZ. That doesn't inspire much confidence about dining in AZ.

  • Nicole G.

Such a cute little place in Patagonia! Had 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' one evening and 'Pancho Villa' another night (not many places still open after hiking and wine tasting all day!). Highly recommend stopping here for dinner if you're in town - owners are nice, atmosphere is relaxed and the pizza crust (I think it's a type of wheat?) is DEEEEELISH!

When working in Nogales, AZ, I often found myself exploring the neighboring towns. In comes Patagonia...very quaint, 3 block long town with a scene of local artists...oh, and bird watching. I was hungry and had read up on Velvet Elvis...I was intrigued, and well, the name alone drew me as well. The place is hard to find...mainly because there are so many plants on the front that you can't really see the name from the street. It's next to a liquor store though. After finding the place, I walked into a very lovely, clean, and classy looking restaurant where only two people sat eating - the server and the cook. I was greeted, placed my order for the Chicken Saltimbocca. First off, I didn't know that all of their crusts were wheat flour, which in my opinion, means that you won't get a crispy, light crust and you'll also have that strong wheat flavor competing against the toppings. With that said, I still very much enjoyed the pizza. It has Herbed Cheese, White Sauce, Roasted Chicken, Prosciutto di Parma, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Fresh Basil, Gorgonzola, Asiago, Mozzarella. The chicken was breast meat and came out a bit hard and dry...even that couldn't ruin this pizza. Everything works on this pizza. That combined with the friendly and speedy service from the staff earns this place 4 stars. I can't wait to get back there to try their quinoa crust pizza...they need a 24hr's heads up for it though. Oh, and don't forget to order their Arnold Palmer while you wait. It's delicious lemonade with their Hibiscus tea. Nice and refreshing twist on an old classic.

What a little treasure of a restaurant in the sleepy little small town of Patagonia. After a day of visiting wineries, this was a great stop. Eat on the patio if the weather is nice. Simple, funky Southwest decor, and yes, there is a velvet picture of Elvis on the wall among the Southwest paintings. The menu is creative, with lots of interesting pizza combos. We had "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", which was delicious with a wonderful crust. My sister, who loves hot spicy food, ordered a pizza with jalapeño cream cheese and it was too hot even for her. Still, a very wonderful overall experience, and if we are ever in this corner of AZ again, we'd definitely come again!

    (4)
  • Heather L.

Always gotta stop at Velvet Elvis when in Patagonia! The creative pizza combos are delicious (and the margaritas are great too). But the most addictive thing might be the salted bread rolls they serve with the meal. The patio is a nice place to hang out and enjoy the surrounding views of Patagonia on a nice weather day, which is fortunately often the case in this corner of Arizona! Try the Pancho Villa.

We had the popeye and mariachi blanco by recommendation of our server. I'm glad we listened. The cheese and artichoke hearts were divine. We stayed at the spirit tree inn. Both places are heavenly and we will surely be visiting both again.

A salad with no meat and few toppings costs $10.50 and my friend's first comment after tasting the pizza was "I've had frozen dijournos that tasted better than this". And the whole place was awkwardly quiet. Go to dinner in Patagonia early so you have more options.

  • Chris P.

We ventured down to Patagonia from Sonoita. We had seen the reviews on this place and thought it would be great. However, the Pizza's were just OK. Nothing real special. Staff was friendly and service fairly quick. Prices just fine. However, I have had better crafted pizza.

    (2)
  • Julie R.

This is probably the most popular restaurant in Patagonia. I wasn't too crazy about the pizza crust here - it's a whole wheat and kind of chewy - the whole wheat is fine, but I prefer a crisper crust. Overall, it's really good though. I thought the salads were a bit overpriced for the amount you got. It's the only game in town for pizza though so you just can't really stay away!

  • Brett G.

Went here with my parents while we checking out nearby Sonoita. Based on the Yelp reviews, I expected it to be a little bit of a dive with excellent food. It turned out not only was the food excellent, but the decor was really cool as well. I was quite surprised. We tried the Pancho Villa Pizza and another custom pizza. I love chorizo, so obviously I loved the mexican style Pancho Villa pizza, but my parents loved it as well. Definitely recommend it. We also got a pizza with mushroom, sausage, and green peppers. I didn't try it, but apparently it was really good too. The owner walked in shortly before we were about to leave. She's a really nice woman, and she's been running the place for quite a long time. It's quite the interesting story.. how the place got started. I'll leave it to you to ask her about it if you ever stop in here though. Anyway, long story short, a great place in a sleepy little town.

I ordered the special a vegetarian curry. It was so good went back another time and it was not on the menu. Spoke with the owner who gave me her number and told me to call her the next time I was planning on coming over and said she would have the ingredients to make it for me. Now that is some service. Have yet to take her up on the offer. But I am so looking forward to having it again. Had a dessert the second time we were there have forgotten what it was called but it was very good.

If you want to take a road trip from Tucson and are having a hard time deciding where to go, I suggest Velvet Elvis: combination restaurant & authentic, registered Navajo carpet dealer. It's not as kitschy as I expected (based on the name). It looks more like a Mexican eatery on the inside but, the food is high quality pizzas, salads & calzones. There are also mixed non-alcoholic lemonade and sodas by the can. Our Greek salad was romaine, a light vinaigrette with French feta, capers & roasted red pepper strips- even the kids enjoyed it. We got 2 monstrous slices of pepperoni pizza for the kids & hubs & I shared a meat-lovers type pizza. All pizzas were served on a thin, crispy wheat crust that was tasty. The interior is beautiful and the patio area is a quaint place to sit on or walk the kids around in while your pizza order is being made. Either way, the town of Patagonia is the setting for this great little gem of an eatery. Definitely recommend.

So the guy at that the Stage Stop is a world class dickhead but Cecelia is the exact opposite. She was amazing. Took great care of us and made our evening. Food was amazing (try the house margaritas) and enjoy your night. Reason enough to make the trip. Would give more stars if I could. (Dude at Stage Stop sucks.)

I have to inform everyone that I am writing this review with mixed feelings. It's because this has been my best kept secret for a long time. Occasionally, I feel the urge to get the flock out of Two-stone for some fresh air and slow things down a bit. Velvet Elvis, Patagonia is usually the destination. The food here rivals some of the finer restaurants in big cities, yet it is tucked away in a small ordinary town of Patagonia, AZ. Me and the posse got on our steel horses this weekend and ended up here for lunch. So the signature thing to get at VE is their pizzas. Don't know how they make their crusts, but they are light and airy, which won't make you feel like you've eaten a ton of food when finished. Topping ingredients are fresh and prices are decent. A 12-dollar medium pizza will feed two normal (emphasize normal) adults for lunch. This place deserves a solid four-star rating and it is getting exactly that. P.S. If you showed up with a large party, bring cash for easier check out as they don't do separate checks. FYI!

Velvet Elvis is a real gem found in the small southern Arizona town of Patagonia. The meal we enjoyed on our way from the vineyards of Elgin and Canelo to Patagonia Lake was destination worthy: Cecilia and her husband were friendly hosts and it was obvious that everything was fresh and made in-house (even including the whole wheat knotted roll). We started with the onion soup. Not too much wostercher sauce, the flavoring was perfect. Loads of onions and a slice of whole wheat bread to soak up the delicious soup topped with ample cheese. Shared a light, refreshing house salad. Enjoyed a calzone filled with eggplant caponata. The crust was whole wheat and the meal was satisfying. We finished it off with a delicious dessert of vanilla ice cream whipped with kahlua and brandy topped with a scrumptious dark chocolate ganache and brandied cherries. I recommend a special trip to Velvet Elvis any time you find yourself in Southern AZ!

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations.
