Cheese crisp is fried, not baked tortilla, but generous in size and amount of cheese. I ordered the special which came with taco meat on the top. The cheese enchilada with red sauce with a side of beans and rice can be had for 5.25 on Tuesdays and is a great deal, it's a properly made enchilada. Wednesdays, tacos are only a $1 and a steal for that price, unfortunately half the town shows up during lunch time. The chicken taco was filled with properly cooked, tender chicken. I'd say the red chili here is better than the green chili. The burgers are hand-pattied, always a plus. The only down sides I noticed to this place is the $4.25 side of guacamole, the waiters are often very slow, and the 75 cent surcharge with every card purchase. One of the better restaurants in Holbrook, a great choice for lunch and they have a refreshing selection of alcoholic drinks to accompany the meal.

I was not impressed with this food, green chili in the rellano was from the can. The chili was real runny and looked like someone regurgitated on my plate. The rice was mush and the beans did not have any flavor. It was like eating oven baked baby food.

Want a great Navajo taco that isn't on greasy fry bread? Here's the place. Chimichangas are great, and pinto beans, salsas and guacamole are fresh made. Great treat to have lunch here.

Growing in South Texas, I'm skeptical eating Mexican food north of Texas. But, this place is the real deal. Their food is made to order but worth the wait. Everything comes out looking fresh. The chips and salsa are on point. The staff is friendly. The restaurant is clean. The food has great flavor. I would definitely visit Romo's Cafe if I'm ever in Holbrook, AZ again.

We had a great meal at Romo's. Waitress Daniele took good care of us and steered us to some delicious food. Yes, that chicken enchilada mentioned by other reviews...awesome! With green chiles! We learned that the owner makes her sauces fresh daily every morning. Bonus after the meal was dancers doing traditional Native American dances in the park across the street...every Saturday evening I believe.

the lady at my hotel recommended this place and i have to say it was awesome. i grew up with home made mexican food, and this comes pretty close. we stopped here traveling on the I40, and i can say we hope to stop here every trip! we ordered nachos and enchiladas, and they were incredible!

Stopped here on a road trip. Place was packed with locals on a Tuesday night. Joe and Aggie's across the street was empty. I had plate of enchilada's with red sauce. Was alright. Also had a decent taco salad. You get sopapillas with honey for dessert. Place, food, and service was decent. If you're hungry and in Holbrook, this is the place to eat.

Stay away from this place if you know anything about what mexican food is and should taste like.. this place does not serve mexican food, they serve DOG FOOD pre-made and warmed up in a microwave (comes out steaming hot on super hot plate with edges of food dried up from microwave waves). I would not serve this dish to my dog... What we got was not a burrito, didnt even sit close to it. bunch of cheapest ground beef covered in some bean sauce. i took one bite and requested a refund, the owner refused to give any money back claiming that she doesnt serve mexican food. she serves arizona-mexican food... why the sign says mexican food then...? i tried to suggest her that she should maybe travel more (to mexico) to see what real food tastes like, to which she replied "I am never going to go to Mexico!!!) Obviously a racist remark. She was so rude and obscure. This place is a terrible scam ran by a redneck racist. STAY AWAY!!!!. And if the owner of this place gets to read it, go ahead and enjoy the 9 dollars that you stole from us. Nice way to run a business. Good luck.

Hmm...where to begin on Romo's? Well, we tried to go across the street to Joe and Aggie's, but it was closed. (No explanation, no sign, normal business hours...very odd.) So I'm guessing that Romo's was a bit overrun because Joe and Aggie's was closed. So I can understand if you're a bit chaotic during a lunch rush. However, despite the young man who worked there offering us a glass of water while we waited for a table, I can't say much positive about the experience. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table while several tables sat around, clearly done with their meals, and having paid their checks. As we waited, we were joined by a pregnant woman and her two kids, as well as another couple, then a pair of men. The restaurant seemed to have sacrificed an 8-top for a party that was coming in, which to me, seemed like a poor choice. (Romo's clearly does not seem like a "make a reservation" place, and when you're that swamped, you should really tend to the customers waiting in your doorway.) Once we were seated, we ordered a burrito, a grilled cheese, and an order of fries. After a long wait (about 30-40 minutes), my burrito arrived, and my friend's fries. However, no grilled cheese. Instead, we got a "cheese melt" or something, a giant tostada slathered with a pool of greasy melted cheese. Apparently, the waitress got the order wrong. After the waitress went back to correct the order, we waited another 15 minutes. I finished my burrito, and after the counter woman saw me looking at her, she came over to ask if we were okay. We then found out the sandwich was never re-ordered and was not in the process of being cooked. We got our check and left--with no apology from the waitress. Overall, Romo's, you seem like nice people, but you need to get it together.

Ate here a long time ago, food was really good. But it seems to have gone downhill. There was a pile of food scraps on the floor, which no one cleaned up, the entire time were were eating our lunch. Place was very noisy, bathroom is unpleasant. Food was just ok. Didn't taste as fresh and "authentic" as I expected. Was disappointed. The place is fairly small (cramped).

  • Lew W.

The place is rundown. For instance, a missing floor tile. How can you keep the floor clean when there is a "hole" in the floor. To top it off, I had two tacos which were soaked in oil and expensive at $7, not to mention light on ingredients.

This was the worst restaurant experience of my life. I ordered two things: a beer and a burrito. I did not receive either and the waiter even tried to charge me for the wrong meal that he brought. You might think that, while I'm waiting about 45 minutes to receive the wrong meal and a beer, I'd at least get my water refilled. Nope. Even though the waitress stopped by the next table to refill their waters and our waiter looked over to see our empty water glasses sitting on the edge of the table, no refills for us. When I got the wrong food, I told the waiter about the problem and at first he seemed nice. He apologized and told me he'll get my burrito out quick. What would you expect a good restaurant to do in this situation? Put a rush on it and make it the next order out of the kitchen. About another 45 minutes passed when the waiter returned to our table -- the first time after bringing the wrong meal -- and he asked if I still want the burrito. Still no water this entire time. Still no beer. Obviously, I declined. I feel a little bad saying this because the waiter was young and this is a small business, but this place was awful. I'd never recommend this to a friend. The food that I ate off my friend's plate was OK, no match for Joe & Aggie's right across the street. (Another small business that actually deserves your support.)

We were in town for a night and tried Romo's based on other Yelp reviews. First - They do serve spirits, we had Margaritas that were OK, from a mix but not bad and they were very willing to give us more limes to cut the sugar. The service was excellent on a Friday night with every table filled and they were still really friendly. I'd recommend getting chicken based dishes rather than the shredded beef as the chicken was nicely marinated but the beef was pretty plain. Overall an enjoyable meal clearly made with some care.

This is one of our local favorites. The food is great....some of our faves are the shredded beef chimichanga, the taco dinner and the cheese enchiladas. The biggest question you will have is red or green chile, both are spicy but have different flavor, usually I perfer green but here they are both delicious. If you aren't sure which you would enjoy they will do half and half. Another star for me is the rice...it's a tomato based rice that is softer than most but a local fave. Most dinner specials come with a soppapilla but if yours doesn't order one and slather it with honey. DELISH!

Excellent Mexican food. Great tacos. Will eat there again.

We stopped here on a recent cross-country drive and really enjoyed the food. This place is on the old Hwy 66 and the neighborhood is a little tired, but the food is great. Best part is with each dinner order you get a sopapilla, which is a fried pastry served with honey. The best.

The $1 tacos on Wednesdays are a must. The rest of the week anything from the menu is a great choice.

Seems as if there are only two local options in Holbrook and we were advised to steer clear of Joe & Aggie's. I guess that makes Romo's the lesser of two evils. The food was edible but not impressive. I've had better Mexican food at chain restaurants, which is a shame when you're hoping for something more authentic.

Great food and service for a diner. We travelled all day and stopped there for an evening meal. Fun decor, the staff greeted us warmly and the food was served timely. Generous portions were served and we were given an option to take the rest back to our room with us. Being that this was Mexicam fare, everything was spiced well and tasty. The only thing that took away from the dining experience was a the listing of all the additional charges. I applaud their transparency I sharing them, but being told on multiple places that costs are increasing and 'these are the things we need to charge you for because of that' are a little annoying. Overall it was an enjoyable dining experience.

I enjoy a good chile relleno. Here at Romo's I learned I'd only ever made it to "good" up 'til today. Turns out I LOVE great chile rellenos. The chile's they used were, plump, fresh and freshly roasted and peeled. The batter was light and tasty, and enjoyable even through some fantastic, smoky, red chili. (I couldn't decide so I got half red and half green chili. Turns out I prefer their red - just me though, the green was great too) My only complaints were 1) the food was lava-hot. Actually that was good... I was able to savor the food instead of just gobbling it down. 2) I will now need to return to Holbrook just to enjoy this masterpiece of a chile relleno, and every other one in my rainy corner of the world shall not measure up. Oh - and smashing good salsa.

Stopped here on the recommendation from a local. Very pleased with the meal. I ordered the chimichanga and although it was good I liked my wife's dish of Nachos Special much better. My mothers order of #1 combination it was delicious as well. The portions were large and I love the fact that the meal came out piping hot! Beer and mixed drinks are available as well.

Amazing Mexican food! We were recommended this place by our hotel and it is some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. I had the shredded beef chimichanga and it was a lot of food. Wife had combo with cheese enchiladas and green sauce and I wanted to steal it from her. I could eat at this place every night of the week if I lived here.

The red sauce on the enchiladas is delicious. Nice spicy flavor...authentic. The taco was homemade and crispy too. Yum... I would give it 5 stars, but they need to spruce the place up.

Food was OK but service was patchy. They were run off their feet, but we were left waiting for a couple of drinks for too long. The guac was stellar but overpriced and the fried fish likewise excellent - all the fries were hand cut and cooked to perfection. The tacos were pretty average, and it's not the cheapest place, but it's filling and clearly busy with locals, so worth a meal when you're hungry after travel..

Our local favorite place to eat. Service most of time is great. Can be a little slow at times. Dont come when your in a rush. But hey who wants to rush when you want to wind down. The food is great. Your standard Mexican. They make everything fresh. No frozen hamburger patties here. The chimi is the bomb. We eat here at least once a week.

Had the Navajo Taco. The full one was too much food. Go for the 1/2 taco. Refried beans were very good. Chips and Salsa also very good. Fast service, food cooked to order, decent prices, and the waitress was very friendly. I would eat there again. 2 Navajo Tacos and 4 beers for under $35 FTW.

Great service and excellent food. I recommend the Navajo taco...order the 1/2 taco if you can't eat a plate heaping with food

Relying on Yelp in Holbrook is risky business because the reviews are so often written by I-40 transients, hailing from Iowa or New Jersey or some such place where there is little (no) basis for what constitutes very good Mexican food. I offer my opinion as a decades long resident of the Southwest and someone who has tried most of the restaurants in Holbrook. Romo's is the real deal. To be more specific, what you want ... rather, what you need ... is the shredded beef chimichanga topped with red and green chili sauce. If you don't like fried (aka a chimi), just ask, and they will make a burro for you the same way. The salsa has great flavor too.

Great food options on RT 66! Was a fun place to stop and enjoy a good meal and some drinks on a long day of driving! Good Mexican food options that covered most of the menu with service from some great waitresses!

This place looks like a hole in the wall and I have driven past it many times. We were hungry and decided to stop. It is not a fancy place, but it is clean. When the chip and salsa were brought to our table I was instantly impressed. The salsa looked home made and it was. I don't know if I have had a better salsa at a restaurant before. With salsa this good I knew the dinner would be excellent. I was right. I had a taco and enchilada combo plate. Their use of spices was impressive. That in combination with the lean shredded beef made an excellent meal. I will be coming back. Holbrook has two restaurants that are surprisingly good.

Excellent Mexican food. Combo was awsome and I a burger and fries. Biggest and best burger that I have had in a long time. Great service.

My husband and I stopped here as a recommendation from the lady behind the desk at our hotel. It was packed but we found a table. We had to wait a while for our food but the waitress even bought me a beer. The chicken tacos were great and so was the beef enchiladas, and shredded beef chimichonga. Its texmex but the staff was friendly and the locals were nice too!

Stopped here for dinner on our travels across Route 66, full of friendly locals who volunteered lots of information on where to head next. The food was delicious the salsa with the corn chips was delicious. We shared a Navajo Taco and Tostadas both were good. The server was very friendly. Glad we made the stop.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
