This is an old school restaurant and the food is great. The service is awesome and we have been there twice and will come anytime were in town. The waitress is a wealth of knowledge on route 66. We actually got to meet "Stanley" who inspired a character in the Cars movie.

While in Holbrook, We stopped at Joe & Aggies Cafe. We should have keep going. The place was dirty. The floors had crushed chips all over. The Flies are all over. One review was" bring your own fly swatter". I should have read it before entering. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND EAT ACROSS THE STREET AT ROMO'S . Wish we did.

This place get 3.5 stars? Is that a joke? Stopped here for lunch based on the reviews, Dirty at 1:00p.m. Almost all tables uncleaned. Found 1 that was clean. Refried beans just freekin awful. What's so hard, empty em out of a can, maybe add some hot sauce, saute em, add cheese on top, apparently this is too hard. Beef taco, no seasoning, no taco sauce added to meat, tasteless, very little lettuce/cheese/tomato. Nondescript rice No iced tea. Really? Rasberry tea was awful Cheese enchis with a good red chile sauce salvaged 2 stars.

Tammy and Caitlin were excellent waitresses, and the food was Awesome....

Great service and food. We did not expect much in this town. But the green chili was outstanding! The power was out so they cannot do deep fried stuff. But food still came out strong.

Joe & Aggie's Cafe is a diner that also happens to have Mexican food. The chile sauces and salsa here is different than what I've tried in the other states. The customer service is great and customization is permitted. I ordered two tostadas and asked for chicken to be included. I love the simple flavors. My boyfriend ordered the beef enchilada combo plate with red chile sauce which seems like it's about to be burn your mouth but you realize you don't have to reach for the water. The selling point was the refried beans. They were abnormally delicious. They were the first things eaten up. I wish we went back to have more.

Loved their red chile enchiladas! The red chile is actually authentic. We will definitely stop by again next time we are in town.

Stopped there after a major storm knocked out a whole grid of electric power last week. Since they still had gas grills, we were able to order dinner. The beans and cheese burrito was great and their red chile sauce was awesome! The staff and owner were super nice and made to best of a bad situation, which made for a good experience.

More New Mexican than Tex Mex! They do have sopapillas and either red or green chile sauce selections. My enchiladas were good, but my daughter's stuffed sopapilla was not entirely cooked-- Doughy. The chips and salsa were really good, and otherwise the building and interior are what you'd want to see on route 66. Old school.

Perfect. Great food, terrific service and a slice of town history on the historic Route 66. Kids and parents will love the place. They make you feel like part of the family when you sit down to eat. We will be stopping in here every time we are in the neighborhood.

Tried this place because of the more good than bad reviews figuring the odds were in my favor. WRONG! All of the bad reviews were true including the awkward placement of the owner(s) up front. They obviously don't read yelp and learn. I had the Navajo taco with red chile and apparently you have to request if you want meat (I grew up always having beef in my red chile) or else you'll get red chile water. Service was horrible as well, and never got any salsa as requested. My husband agrees that we won't return. Oh well, live and learn!

Yummy yummy! Went here with family while driving Route 66. On a recommendation from the server, I ordered the chile rellenos which is covered in a fried egg. I was a little dubious, but it was delicious! Would definitely order again as well as recommend to anyone else! The owner is the daughter of the original owners, Who were interviewed by the creators of cars the movie and there is now a lot of cars memorabilia in the restaurant. Definitely a good stop.

Probably would be really good if I didn't have food intolerances. However they weren't very accommodating for my dairy and gluten intolerances. The chile sauce is not gluten free and they wouldn't substitute corn tortillas on a burrito. Ended up with an enchilada without any sauce. Having eaten at a lot of other mexican restaurants on our trip, the mexican food here wasn't as impressive. The staff was pretty friendly and it was a cool atmosphere for our Route 66 trip. Cool to be in a place that helped inspire the Cars movie.

We have, in the past, eaten at Romo's across the street. While passing through Romo's was closed so we decided to give this place a try. From the minute we walked in I knew this place would work. Super friendly staff, tasty food (I tried a combination plate and husband had stuffed sopa - both rock solid good. The chips and salsa was bit meh) and an interesting backdrop make this a great stop off in Holbrook. The interior is in a bit of disrepair, but in a good way. You know this place has stood the test of time! Get the owners to tell you all about their contribution to the Disney movie 'Cars' for the full tourist experience! I think Joe and Aggie's is our new stop in this town!!

Food was good. Service was good. Chips and salsa were good. Nobody bothered my wife wanting an autograph. We might have found somewhere we can just sit back and enjoy ourselves.

  • Russell M.

The popular restaurant is right across the street so we chose this one; great choice. Our server recommended the red chili and of course we had to try it. He also told us about their tell eons recipe, had to try that too. Both Wolfgang and I were super pleased with food. The atmosphere is the desirable RT. 66 Cafe experience. A must visit for any RT66 adventure. Don't let the exterior fool you, our server, food choices, and atmosphere were positively memorable.

  • Alea H.

We chose this based on the yelp reviews. It was pretty good. It got busy shortly after we got there and there was only one server, so service was a little slow, but it was certainly friendly. The ambiance is very very casual with a bunch of Native American art which is interesting. The food was good as well. We all got the combo plate. The red chile sauce is spicy! It comes with rice, beans, and sopapillas. Pretty standard Mexican food at good prices.

Our group of 3 people had lunch here yesterday. I had read some of the reviews and was a bit hesitant about eating here. When we walked in we did notice many uncleared tables. There was a car show in the adjacent lot and it seemed this diner was overwhelmed by the crowd. The place needs a good straightening up. The first booth you see is obviously used for the cafe business office. We sat at the only cleaned off table we could find. Behind was a junky corner. Having said all that the waitress was very good, got our drinks right away and got our order in. The food came very quickly. I had a red enchilada with chicken and a ground beef taco. Both were tasty. The taco was served in one of those shells that come in a box but it was good. There was a generous serving of refried beans and they were also good. The sopapilla with honey was a treat we usually don't get in Mexican places in the Phoenix area. Would I eat here again? Probably not and had my friend not wanted to go ahead and eat here we would have likely walked out due to the appearance of the dining area. Too bad.

Nice little local spot along Route 66. Exactly, the small town, charming place you're looking for. I had a combo platter and would suggest the beef tacos.

Went there for breakfast and it was perfect! Everything tasted great! Good place for adults and kids. Good menu selection. And the workers here are super friendly. They spoke with us about the history of the restaurant and the city. Awesome place I recommend it to every single person that wants to have an authentic Route 66 meal!

  • Carolina V.

I feel bad writing a bad review because everyone was so nice at this kitschy 'route 66' staple. But in all honesty the food was bad. The soapilla was delicious - but when is fried bread not? I asked the delightful waiter for a recommendation and he told me to get the combo platter which I did with the green chile. I was honestly most impressed by the chips and salsa that they brought out at the beginning. The salsa was delicious - but then again when is salsa not? My platter was just wrong. It tasted old, over flavored, and just not good. The chile looked canned and the tamale tasted like chalk. I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a few bites. I really want to emphasize that the staff was so nice- but I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to weary travelers.

  • Casey H.

An awesome place to bring some friends. Good food and great staff. If I'm ever in the area again I will defiantly eat here again.

    (4)
  • Christina M.

Mediocre at best. The server is really nice here. But the place is a mess. Filthy tables all over and left dirty and uncleared. The refrained beans and rice were hard and dry! The enchilada was tough and lacked flavor. The hard taco was the only edible thing on my plate. For $10 and being in a historic location, I expected more. Sorry! :/

  • Jim W.

In my original review I said I would come back if I was in Holbrook around meal time. I was and I did. It was dinner this time...and it was as good as the breakfast I had last time. Good down home cooking with great Mexican dishes, staff that are easy to talk with...good spot overall.

  • Cain R.

We went based off of Yelp reviews, which were manly positive. The food was okay. I orders the Stuffed Sopapilla. It had the outer layer of a Sopapilla and stuffed with refried beans and ground beef. No seasoning. That would be okay of it weren't Mexican food. The red sauce was good. The other food we ordered was okay. The big thing was that the place felt dirty. The table was sticky. I should have walked out when we first sat down. The owner's computer sat on the front where he sat down occasionally. The screen saver was not child friendly; more like a poster you would see in an R-rated film from an auto repair scene - glad my 8 band 10 year old did not see that. He also had cigarettes laying on the table. Finally, the service was slow and no real consciousness by owner that it took to long to bring out. When it finally arrived, my daughter's meal came out about five minutes before the rest of the families. This was a half hour after we ordered. No big deal, except we were only one of three people in the restaurant when we arrived and did not start to get busy until fifteen minutes after we sat down.

  • Suzanne G.

We had the Navajo tacos which were tasty. But I had the chile relleno which was the best I've ever had - outstanding! The waiter was super friendly and helpful and the food was really fresh! The sopapillas were so yummy, I could just eat those. Plus, I liked that they offered local brews. I'd have given it 4 stars, but the chips were stale and the salsa was salty.

    (3)
  • Caren S.

Flies, yes. Some dirty tables, yes. Really good huevos rancheros with crispy hashbrowns and good refried beans? YES!! My daughter said her omelette was better than the hashbrowns.

    (4)
  • Alyson F.

Had breakfast here after our stay in the Wigwam Hotel. We had the huevos rancheros and the chorizo egg scramble. Both tasty and the whole place was an authentic route 66 experience. Very kind service too!

    (4)
  • Rudy B.

Had the Navajo Taco with the green chilie and it was delicious. The food and service was great. It's worth the stop in Holbrook. Just ate here again and got a sopapilla as well as a Navajo taco and it is fat and away the best of both we had so far.

I love checking out restaurants in Route 66 country and after reading fellow Yelpers' comments, decided on this one. Colorful and cozy inside, with very welcoming friendly servers. My partner ordered an enchilada-tostado plate special and she felt it was OK. I ordered a tuna fish sandwich and didn't really care for the look or taste of it. If I would visit here again I wouldn't order that. The fries were good though. One literally sweet touch was receiving a sopapilla with honey for free! All in all, a pleasant enough dining experience.

  • Kristin S.

Absolutely amazing New Mexican food! The red and green chiles are very authentic. However, the Cheese Crisp is unique and delicious! I will be attempting to replicate it on the East coast for sure! The local Grand Canyon beer was a perfect complement! Do not go by Holbrook, AZ on I-40 and not stop... Even if it is not a mealtime the dessert burro was fabulous as well and could be a perfect snack with a cup of coffee.

    (5)
  • Melanie S.

Huevos rancheros are very good! Even the red chile has some heat to it, which is rare outside of New Mexico where I'm from.

  • Tess Z.

This is a cute family restaurant started in 1943. The staff is VERY friendly and open to sharing the history of the area. The food is extremely cheap and authentic Mexican. Each person also gets serves a complimentary sopapilla (delicious with honey) as well as a basket of nachos. I wasn't very fond of the bitter salsa, but my mom loved it. The ambiance is 1950's.

    (4)
  • Kevin M.

I had enchiladas eggs hash browns beans with the red sauce. It was good the red sauce alil spice to it but it was good wish it would gave 2eggs and not one tho but the food was good

  • Karen D.

A good Rt. 66 experience. Plenty of food, good flavor, and a plethora of interesting and dusty Rt. 66 memorabilia to gaze at while waiting for your meal. I had the chicken burro, my friend had the tostada plate. Both were quite tasty.

  • Anye F.

A decent option for a meal if you're flitting through Holbrook on the interstate. The staff is very friendly and the service was good, the food was nothing too exciting but not bad either. They get a brownie point for serving sopapaillas with the meal. I'd eat there again but I wouldn't plan my trip around it.

My wife and I both got cheeseburgers. Nothing fancy, good portion for the price and you get what you pay for. Waiter was friendly and attentive.

  • Kristen P.

This restaurant offers the standard diner fare of eggs, etc. as well as a bunch of Mexican food. The food itself is decent (probably some of the best compared to everything else in the area), but the real draw is talking to the owners! They were extremely friendly and eager to tell us about the history of their restaurant. Joe & Aggie actually helped inspire the Disney movie Cars! They even have signed sketches from Disney's sketch artist and Imagineers. Coming here is certainly one of the highlights of things to do in Holbrook.

What can I say, if your up for a night at the tee pee motel and a tour through the petrified Forrest national park, you will find yourself smack dab in the middle of Holbrook. Although this town has clearly seen better days, Joe and Aggies was a cool little place that reminded my sister and I of the old route 66 which sits directly out front. As my sister is vegan, we made some special dietary requests which were handled very well indeed by our cheerful friendly waiter. Cool little diner for sure.

  • Michael T.

Great find on Route 66. The decor is evocative of another time and the food and hospitality were both great. I went with the Combination Platter (taco, enchilada, and something else that I don't remember.) Go with the red sauce - not as spicy as you think. The salsa is HOT though so beware. Would definitely go again.

  • Jack J.

I had the red chile bowl which amounted to a red-chili soup with a few tiny pieces of beef thrown in, plus a sad accompanying tortilla. The red chili tasted like it came right out of a frozen tub. If you don't believe me, stop in any supermarket in the Southwest, buy a small tub of frozen red chili sauce, warm some up, taste it, then compare to Joe and Aggie's. Sorry to be so harsh, but really, I was disappointed to the point where I felt compelled to contribute to the Yelp community to set the record straight.

Good atmosphere & friendly service Breakfast was decently good nice n simple! The atmosphere was somewhere between a very local feel with a pinch of touristy. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be making a pit stop !

This is a great and homey little spot. The food is no frills, hearty grub. The staff is warm and welcoming. Please support this small business in this small town! I love this little place!

  • B. T.

Walked in and the owner/manager was sitting at the first table and looked really dirty. So it didn't start off well. The entire place is gross. There was a bug on our table, my children were afraid to even sit down. We stayed, to keep from being rude and walking out, Too bad we didn't. The food was okay, if you could get past the nastiness of the place. I wouldn't recommend this place, and I don't know how the health department hasn't shut this them down. Just nasty.

Off the newer Route 66 stretch, in the deserted town of Holbrook caught between the Tee-Pee Motel and the Petrified Forest you'll stumble upon Joe & Aggie's Cafe. AMAZING FOOD + FRIENDLY SERVICE = SPECTACULAR SOUTHWESTERN EXPERIENCE! Drop the tourists, J&A remains in business by the locals and probably the drunks. You'll see the older gents with their coffee mugs gossiping about the townees and old times. Eavesdropping is the perfect side task to eating the BEST Enchiladas found in the Southwest. Crispy yet tangy yet spicy yet simply PERFECT! Their green and red salsas (do it up "Christmas-style" as they call it) are to die for. As my partner says, you can eat enchiladas for any and every meal of the day. If you eat it three times a day at J&A, you won't even get sick of them. Our lovely waitress told us that one wealthy celebrity flies in just for J&A salsa to take back home to California...uhh huh, that good! If I'm ever back in the Southwest, I'll be sure to go out of my way for a visit. I always recommend J&A to anyone doing a cross-country trip. Pick up a souvenir postcard or take a picture of their exterior Rte. 66 mural to create your own.

  • Guy D.

The food here was bad... but the strangest thing... was that there were 100s of flies there. The owner was swatting them right above our table! So we sat eating next to a pile of dead flies as the owner continued to swat them as we ate. Truly a strange, but not recommended experience...

Don't go here if you're turned off by a restaurant which doesn't keep its style up to date... If you're in to a place that has incredibly friendly service and simple, flavorful food then you definitely need to go here. I had the chile relleno and it was the best I'd ever had.

Earlier this month, my dad and I decided to take a father/daughter adventure down historic Route 66. After spending a night at a hotel in town, we stopped at Joe & Aggie's on the way to the Petrified Forest National Park. The ambience is exactly what I would have expected along the old route-- mis-matched art (Miller LIte signs and Route 66 signs and posters that look like they came from a Scholastic Book Fair), a carousel of postcards, and a menu riddled with grammatical errors and home-cooked goodness. Both of our breakfasts were delicious, and reminiscent of an earlier era. It wasn't 5-star, but it was perfect for a long day of driving, sightseeing and putting down the miles.

Terrible Mexican food, crumbles for chips, and bad service from the waitress. Guacamole was good. Only reason it got the second star

There are a lot of gems along Route 66 in Arizona. Joe & Aggie's is a crown jewel. Fantastic greasy spoon Tex-Mex served in an inimitable original atmosphere. Not to be missed.

  • Allison B.

I love this place! Did you know that it was part of the inspiration for the animated movie cars! They have autographs and pictures and everything very cool. The wait staff is very friendly. The food was amazing for what Holbrook has to offer. I had the chicken tacos which were delish. The salsa was super hot! So I was glad our waiter kept the beers coming. There are also little dorky books on everyone's table for entertainment. Def coming back to this place next time I am in town.

Great little Route 66 restaurant. They serve good Mexican food (though definitely not tex-mex). We had both dinner and breakfast here, and enjoyed both. The decor is interesting and the wait staff are all characters. We'll be back next time through Holbrook.

Woo Hoo! We stop in every time we come through Holbrook. The staff is super friendly. We usually come in for breakfast and while I can't be very detailed about what we have had, everything we've tried has been very good.It is a really nice stop for all of us weary Route 66 travelers. Highly recommended!

Just had dinner at Joe and Aggies, friendly wait staff and a cozy atmosphere - we were really made to feel welcome. I had the Navajo Tortilla and my wife had a burrito, both with green Chile sauce, and both tasted great! Highly recommended.

We met some friends for brunch at this cafe on our way through Arizona. It was fun and friendly, the food was fair. I had the breakfast burrito and it was ok, but needed something, sauce, gravy or sour cream, it was dry. One person had Huevos Rancheros which were spicy but very tasty. The waitress was terrific. Nice stop for a bite.

  • Ruth Ann M.

I had breakfast here with my son. It was fine. It's a little roadside place with neon beer signs in the windows. The waitress was hilarious and after we ate, she showed us all their Cars memorabilia, photo album of the film crew, etc. I'd recommend it for breakfast and I'm sure lunch and dinner are just as good. it looks like it would be a fun place for a meal with a nice cold beer.

We drove to Holbrook just to check it out. We spotted this little cafe, and it looked charming from the outside, so we returned for dinner. The inside was typical of a basic diner - kitsch decor, and all the good stuff one can expect from a local, classic eatery. The service was actually really good. We were greeted immediately, our server kept our glasses full, and we were not neglected. The weird aspect of the service - he brought the sopapillas before the meal. The meal itself was uninspired. The food arrived dried out, as if it were left under the salamander. The meats in both the enchiladas and the taco were not seasoned at all, and dry. For authentic Mexican food, it was shocking that they made the taco with Taco Bell style, pre-formed shells. That was a weird item for them to actually spend on, but not seasoning the meat. A little bit of cumin could totally go a long way, here. They are also fairly heavy on the ground beef if you look at their menu. They obviously like cross use of ingredients for saving on their food cost. Still, a little bit of seasoning is cheap. Cumin is one of the least expensive seasonings to buy in bulk as a restaurateur. The enchiladas. Were. Awful. The chicken in my enchilada was dry. It was not seasoned at all. It didn't even have cheese, onions or anything moist to help it out. The salsa was alright. It tasted as if they used canned tomatoes and merely pureed it with the Asian Sriracha sauce or just dried, hot peppers they bought on special. The beans didn't taste canned - they tasted reconstituted. As in "add the hot water to the powder and let steep for 10 minutes." This would be a great restaurant if they offered something different, more inspired, or just good. I drove all over Holbrook, and there are a bunch of Mexican-American restaurants - minus the location and the age of Joe And Aggie's Cafe, they really don't have it going on, and I don't picture it as that much of a hot spot for locals, other than seniors who enjoy bland food. Oh - fun trivia - St. Louis on their Route 66 maplet on the side of the building in the parking lot is misspelled - it says "St. Loues." I have worked in restaurants for almost a decade in the capacity of dish washer, server, hostess, cook, and manager. I am a foodie, I love cooking and creating in my home kitchen and at work, and I am currently working on my bachelor degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Management. I have lived in and traveled around the South West and Mexico for more than 20 years. I am fairly familiar with Mexican food, "Tex Mex," and various regional Mexican and Hispanic specialties. This was not "authentic." It was lazy and cheap.

My husband and I stopped here on a road trip and were really happy with our meal. Sure, I've had better Mexican food, but the restaurant was clean, the service was friendly, the food was reasonably priced and it hit the spot after a long day of driving. I'm not sure what the people who gave such angry low-rated reviews were expecting in such a quaint town. Anyway, I had enchiladas and my husband had tacos and sopapillas. I was unsure about the whole green/red chili thing, but our waitress put my chili on the side so it turned out fine. The rice and beans were tasty and I loved scooping them at the end of the meal with my chips. Overall, I would recommend visitng Joe & Aggie's if you're in the area and hungry for a good meal.

  • Ethan A.

Awful. That pretty much sums up the food. Two people in my party ordered tacos with a side of beans and rice and said the tacos were good, but the beans look like they had been sitting in an open can for a week and allowed to dry up. I ordered the chili with the red sauce and could not eat more than a couple of bites. The salsa was awful and gave me a very upset stomach. The chili seemed to be nothing more than tomato sauce, beans, and some ground beef. Our waiter offered to give me the green chili, which was okay. I want to emphasize how nice the staff was, but the food was just awful and I don't plan on coming again.

OK... You are in Holbrook, so don't expect big city dining! This place was yummy, very cool, authentic Mexican food. Chips were kind of lame, and so was the "salsa," but the entrees were delicious, really hit the spot, and extremely reasonable in price. Remember, closed Sunday. Right across the street from the Roxy Movie Theater.

Tried my first Navajo Taco here - Navajo fry bread topped with beans, shredded chicken, green chili sauce, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It was good! Bread-y with lots of flavor. I was told the green sauce was screaming hot, but it was more mild than my husband's red sauce on his enchiladas and the salsa served with the chips. They also served savory sopapillas that I liked a lot. I'm used to the cinnamon-sugary Texas version. These were saltier and slightly more heavier/bread-y - like the fry bread. But with a drizzle of honey, it was delicious! Anyone who thinks Mexican food is the same region to region will be disappointed. Heck, Mexican food varies all across Texas (and leans more toward Tex-Mex). This is a great sampling of this regions style of food. Plus, it was served with a smile and charm that makes this place a true gem.

  • Elizabeth B.

Not sure where to begin. We were told that the Mexican food was "internationally known" and that it was "hand made every morning." First of all, internationally known? Don't think so. I am from Texas. I know what Mexican food is, and this is not it. Secondly, hand made every morning? I want my food hand made...when I order it...We had the combo platter so we could try a bit of everything. The green chili sauce was pretty bad, but the regular red enchilada sauce was much, much worse. It tasted like it was out of a can. The salsa literally tasted like a mix of ketchup and tobasco sauce. So, so horrible. Our sopapilla was served between the salsa and the entree, which means sadly, our meal peaked before it began...not that the sopapilla was good...it just wasn't as bad... The beans were definitely out of a can. The rice was boring. It took about 3 bites before we could distinguish between the tamale and the enchilada. If you go, here's a good way to figure it out: the meat inside the tamale is DRY, the tortilla part of the enchilada is SOGGY. Tamale: dry. Enchilada: soggy. Now, you'll know the difference. Hope that was helpful.

Wonderful food, nice waitstaff. Had the chili relleno--best I've ever had, but different with eggs. Would have never stopped if it were not for yelp. No ambiance, but the food was great.

  • Maureen W.

The stars are given mostly because it's a cool old Route 66 restaurant, the servers were nice and the decor is interesting. The food was pretty bad though. My husband calls it the worst mexican food he has ever had. The food was very bland and had no flavor. The hard taco shells were like the store-bought kind. The tamales were really weird. First time i have seen them slathered in sauce and cheese. The books on the table were entertaining!

    (2)
  • Joyce L.

That was bad, very bad! The first time Yelp has steered us wrong. begs the question, did this restaurant just get taken over by owners? Would have used zero stars if the app would allow.

  • Sasha G.

The food was bad! The mashed potatoes were INSTANT! The red chili burro was gross and expensive ($10). The sopaipillas didn't have any cinnamon sugar. They were just fried tortillas which you could put honey on. The place is cluttered and old. The only good thing about this place was the owner was very friendly and helpful and the salsa was homemade and good.

Amazing fry bread and great service. Okay this place is an icon, the food is good, service is watched over by the owners. We do have a fly problem, but then welcome to Holbrook in the summer. We loved it, some of the best fry bread I ever had. We also had the Navajo tacos which were yummy.

I had the sopapilla and it was wonderful. The place itself could use a bit of a makeover on the inside. My server was friendly and for those traveling Route 66, it's a good place to stop.

We stopped in here 5 years ago on a Western family roadtrip, and we still talk about how good those enchiladas verdes were. Stepping into this diner was like stepping in to movie set for the old route 66 experience (somewhat literally, the movie cars was partially based off this town), complete with friendly staff and good-quality diner food. I highly recommend stopping by if you happen to be traveling on I-40.

I ate here several times while traveling through Holbrook. Everything my family and I had was delicious! The breakfast is great, the burgers are delightfully meaty, and the red and green chilis are fantastic. Plus the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

So I moved from Los Angeles to Chicago last September, and on the long drive we stopped at Joe and Aggie's again since we had loved it so much the previous year. The food was still enjoyable and incredibly cheap which was a big plus considering all of the money I was shelling out for my move. The one star deduction is due to the fact that my boyfriend and I had to take turns going in to order because we couldn't leave our cat locked in the 90 degree car and they don't allow pets. I can't hold this personally against them because I do honestly understand that there are rules and health regulations that they must follow. I guess I just wish that there was some sort of outdoor seating, though considering the druggies we ended up conversing with on the grass next to the parking lot, I understand why they don't have outdoor seating... It's sad that drugs like Meth have so greatly impacted these wonderful Southwest towns. All in all still a WONDERFUL place to grab a bite to eat in a warm and friendly environment.

Nothing fancy, but its decent food at a fair price. Staff were super nice and attentive with me.

It was ok. Panhandlers outside preying on tourists.food was packaged potatoes, heated frozen chicken fried steak patty, and jar gravy. The staff was freindly and sopapillas great. Very little honey on the table.

Breakfast: cheese enchiladas with fried eggs on top. Yum. Good service. Indian decor everywhere. It was especially awesome when a local drunk (it seems one of many), asked us if we wanted to buy a necklace. We turn him down and he begs, "pleeeeeease?" In a town that's largely vacant, Joe & Aggie's is an oasis.

Took a trip up to Gallup from Tucson and had the best cheese crisp ever here! Great funky Mom and Pop vibe with books to read at the tables. Excellent route 66 restaurant!

Must stop on Route 66. As much for the old-school atmosphere as the food. Great rellanos and tasty salsa.

This, like everything else in Holbrook, is closed on Sundays. Boo.

My favorite stop for lunch or dinner on my way from Phoenix to Telluride. I always get the Navajo tacos with red sauce. Service is always great, they are quick to refill your drink and your chips and salsa.

Disgusting!!! We were told this restaurant was a Route 66 institution and I personally love hole in the wall places. But this place was revolting! I feel a little bad because it is small mom & pop in the middle of an economically regressed city. We asked the waiter what was the specialty of the house - he told us they are know internationally for their Mexican food. So Mexican we ordered. The food was disgusting the beans tasted like they had been cooking for a week. The rice was foul. It was literally inedible - The food made my dinning partner sick. The place was dirty and not in a charming route 66 ways. I would never go back!!!! This place was literally a kitchen nightmare.

Hole-in-the-wall diner, but exactly what I wanted for a breakfast on Route 66. I ordered cheese enchiladas with egg from the breakfast special menu and a coffee. The meal was delicious and came with your choice of red or green chili sauce (I ordered a mix of both), beans, hash browns & a tortilla. The coffee was coffee --nothing spectacular. My daughter ordered pancakes and a small orange juice. Pancakes were from a mix, but huge and served with margarine & the OJ tasted like juice from a gas station. My bill came to just under $15. This is a place the locals go and I wasn't disappointed.

Staff was cool, food was OK and atmosphere/experience was really great. You feel like you're in a real small-time locals joint. Stop in if you want a real slice of hometown Americana!

Friendly staff and excellent Mexican food. Grab anything with chile and don't leave without a sopapilla. Eclectic assortment of memorabilia behind the register makes paying fun.

We arrived in Holbrook tired and not wanting to fix supper. I looked for a fantastic cafe with very good food. We found a lot of good ratings for J&A and it was not a wrong choice at all. The original Aggie was there on this visit as her daughter and relatives still own and run this old Route 66 cafe that serves up fine Mexican food. I had a beef & bean burro enchilada style and my wife had the combination plate. Both were excellent. I had the green chile which had a nice bite and my wife had the red chile on the side that turned out to be a true mild level of heat that she could tolerate. The young man who waited on us was like a walking history book of not only Holbrook but a great deal of Arizona. The nice thing is the prices are right with a generous helping of food.

You cannot beat the overall experience and friendliness of staff. Lunch hit the spot, though guacamole tasted a little supermarkety. Sopapillas with honey were outstanding!

We stayed in Holbrook AZ and wanted some Mexican food for dinner. We looked on Yelp and found Joe and Aggies. WOW---what a great find. We showed up around 8 PM and when we drove up we were, to say the least, unimpressed. The building is old and the paint needs re-freshing but we decided to go beyound the looks and check out the food. All I can say is that it was fantastic--I had the tamale plate and my traveling companion had the combination plate. From the chips when you sit down to the dinner itself---it was great. If you like hot add some sauce---if you like mild use the mild. The flavors blended together and yet made each dish very special. The Cafe has been in business with the SAME family since 1943 and the quality has been maintained all those years. What a tribute to quality food and a family that cares what it serves. Thanks Joe and Aggie's as you have one of the best.

After a year of using Yelp, this baby finally let me down with this one. The two previous 5-star reviews had us anticipating some great grub. My girlfriend and I pulled into this joint after a night staying at the Wigwam motel down the street. We took some photos of the interesting route 66 mural on the side and had high hopes. Once we went inside, it went downhill from there. The staff was totally lethargic and was more interested in swatting flies than in sitting us down or retrieving even the most basic items (tortillas with the eggs). The food was mediocre. My pancakes were especially dry and dull to the taste, while my girlfriend's omelet was a little better but overly cheesy. The hash browns were inedible. The tortilla was great. I can only hope that ordering more Mexican food type breakfasts would have led to a much better experience. Avoid the basic American/Gringo food here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
