We'll be back to Irene's for sure! Twice a year we make a pilgrimage out from Phoenix to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior on HWY 60 for the annual plant sale and a good hike. Typically we picnic it but this time we committed to finding a good restaurant nearby. Irene's caught our interest through Yelp and we will definitely be returning. It was about 20 minutes east from the park. The menu was full of Mexican-American classics, but the variety of American bar fare i.e.mozzerella sticks and breaded mushrooms made me wonder if it was going to be worth it. We decided to ask our waitress what was good. "Everything," she replied "It's really hard to start," as she peered over the menu. This was either a copout or the real truth, but her earnestness passed the truth test so we asked what people come there for. "The Green Chile," she said. When I inquired if the chile was pork or beef she reported that it was both. SOLD! Three out of the five of us ordered the green chile, one of us the red chile and the kid did the enchilada kid's meal (which he loved, raving it was better than Pepe's Taco Villa and Gallo Blanco, which is his way of saying YEAH, let's come back!!). We munched on chips and red salsa while we waited. The salsa was a classic Arizona style, mild, red, salty and oniony. Thumbs up for the individual salsa bowls. Our drink orders were brought out promptly in tall frosty cups of crushed ice. The green chile delivered to our expectations. Two of us had chimichangas and another a bowl. It was not as spicy hot as I would have expected being that much closer to New Mex however the cubed beef and pork were tender, and overall it was very flavorful. The chimi was crispy fried but not greasy and came with the requisite guac and sour cream, side of rice and beans. When she delivered the plate I could not help exclaiming "Just what I hoped it would look like!". A nice north-of-the-border chimichanga. I like my Mexican food authentica but am guilty for liking this Americanized specialty just the same. The rice looked perfect just on sight and our son loved it. The beans were beyond competent, but not poetry as my husband would say. His chile relleno burro was more like an omelet than a meringue (which he had no complaints about, merely observed) and he appreciated the peppery flavor of the chile. The true test, however, was whether or not the tortilla for his bowl of chile was buttered. When he unrolled the tortilla he was satisfied. The waitress was very attentive and midway through our meal she asked if we needed refills on our drinks. Instead of bringing out new cups, she brought three carafes of everything we'd ordered full of the beverage and same frosty crushed ice. They must have the syrup mix right because somehow the Pepsi never got watered down. By the time the five of us were done with our early lunch, the place had filled up nicely and was doing brisk business. It had zero atmosphere either inside or out, but by the time our group slipped into our cozy booth it didn't matter. One of us noticed that there wasn't any music. But there wasn't any TV, either, so that's a plus. I was particularly happy with the cheerful service and very satisfied with the quality of food. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that we have yet to try out the rest of the menu for overall excellence. I'm sure we will return for another round in six months!

We discovered this jewel back in 2003 when we visited Globe for the first time. Someone had told us about how Globe had been singled out in a magazine article as a well-kept secret site for some of the best Southwestern cuisine in the U.S.. We found that claim a little incredulous, but decided to give it a try. The two restaurants recommended were Irene's and Libby's El Rey Cafe. We think both are outstanding, but we have to give the nod to Irene's. We are from Southern California, so Mexican food is a way of life for us. My wife and I both ordered what we think is our two best indicators of good Mexican food--cheese enchiladas and chili rellenos. From our first bite, we were overwhelmed by the delicious sauces that we were tasting. Just a wonderful blend of flavors that perfectly complemented the food. The salsa was also outstanding, as were the chips. We just couldn't believe the overall flavors--main entree, beans, chips, dip, and, yes, even the rice. We just returned to Globe and Irene's for our 3rd visit, and we were not disappointed. Everything was exceptional--so much so that we ordered a bunch of food to go so we could freeze it and pull it out in our RV as we head east out of good Mexican food territory. This place is truly a hidden gem that we are so grateful to have discovered. We drove over from Phoenix several years ago with our Mexican friends just to let them check Irene's out--they came away with the same impression. We now share a love of this wonderful place.

We were very dissapointed in eating at Irene's after the good reviews. Service was good and food is cheap. However the quality of food has a bit to be desired. My son ordered kid's chicken strips meal which included 1 chicken strip and french fries logged full of grease. Green chile was the only thing somewhat desired but the enchilada sauce is close to tasteless. We would not return.

Walking distance from my hotel so I've had it a couple of times. The food is pretty good, the hot salsa is probably the best in town and the wait staff is very friendly. Not the best in town but pretty good none the less...

I'm from Globe and really miss the Mexican food up there. Grew up on it, ate it all the time, and knew I would be driving through and couldn't wait to stop and have some Irene's. My regular burro enchilada style was great, and that was about the extent of the love I felt for this place today. My friend got two chicken tacos that has so little meat in it, you could hardly taste it. The taco shells were so old they were almost inedible. I don't think he ate more than 3 or 4 bites, and then just gave up. My daughter's beef tacos weren't quite that bad, but close. I am generous giving this place 3 stars, should really be 2. Gave the extra star for my burro and the sentimentality of stopping at one of my favorite childhood places.

On your way through Globe and looking for some cheesy, greasy, delicious mexican? This is your spot. I'm not sure what's going to happen to my stomach in an hour but for the moment I'm happy. Enchiladas and Relleno were perfect.

Restaurant is very clean, food is authentic! Everyone is very helpful and kind. As a visitor in Globe I felt really welcomed. Must try Menudo soap, and encaladas.

Its Globe Arizona, unless you plan to drive 2 hours in any direction to find better Mexican food I suggest you enjoy it. Context matters.

Good service, but the food completely missed the mark. You can usually tell the meal how good Mexican meal is is going to be based on the chips and salsa. I tried the tacos, chicken fajitas, and wings. I found the tacos and fajitas to be extremely bland and greasy. The taco dish was covered with lots of cheese. The wings weren't bad and probably were the best part of the meal. The waitress was extremely nice and the food came out quickly. They also serve bottled beer and wine coolers. I was on a motorcycle ride to Salt River Canyon and stopped here based on the strong recommendation from a local I met at a gas station. The place was packed, but there has to be better options for Mexican food in Globe. For a town that prides itself on its Mexican food, I was disappointed.

Super S L O W service, excellent Mexican food. If you're willing to wait for it, the food is fantastic. We all had a green/mix burro enchilada style and LOVED it! (go easy on the cheese...)

Stopped in here on a day visit to globe. Was hoping for some great chips and salsa (after disappointing visit with competitor up the street). Only found so-so chips and salsa (which was very similar to competitor 1/2mile away). Restaurant was clean and had real chairs at the tables (which was nice compared to same competitor up the street) but no margarita's -beer and wine only. Friendly staff but i put a lot of stock in the chips and salsa so this restaurant gets an average rating.

6 of us stopped here on the way back to PHX to have lunch. There aren't many options in the wonderful city known as Globe. The place was packed which looked like a great sign. There were several people standing at the cash register which was not a good sign. The chips and salsa were weak. Sweet salsa and old chips is never a good way to start off a meal. We ordered drinks and ate chips and salsa for an eternity. Finally we put in our order. Then we ate chips for a second eternity and some enchilada and fries came out. I didnt try them but my companions said they were whack. The fries looked huge and the sauce looked light. Another eternity and a half goes by and our food comes out. Hope you like queso! Most of our meals were covered and filled with cheese. Pounds of it. My meal was missing my side order and was really bad. Had the #10 combo that came with a chile relleno, beef taco, and a enchilada. None of it was good. It also had rice and beans smothered in cheese. If you are seeing a pattern here it should be cheese and bad. A person at the table commented out they cant all be winners. That sums it up. Lets stand in line so we can pay now because the waiters dont know how to take your payment to a cash register. Never again Irenes. Sorry for you Globians.

Well, I guess Globe is the place for me to get my Mexican Food fix on! So far, the top 2 places I like to eat Mexican are in Globe ... this place is #2 on the list and its CHEAP!!! I guess I have been paying valley prices too long, but a huge combo plate - regular burrito (red chili) taco, enchilada served with rice and beans only 5.95 - that plate would be like 10-12 bucks over here in the valley ... Glad I have the opportunity to go through here a lot and have more options!!! Great service, excellent kids menu and cheap prices with amazing food - what more can someone ask for??

I walked in and sat myself- it was a pretty busy lunch crowd, most were already eating. Somebody was over fairly quickly to take my order. I had a regular burro, enchilada style with a side of rice. While I waited, I noticed how very, very clean the restaurant is. There was a lady wiping down tables and chairs and I could smell cleaning mixture from my table. It may have been too strong, but that doesnt bother me at all. I LOVE a restaurant that is clean and sanitary. I have been to too many dirty places that this was a refreshing change. I waited 25 minutes for my food. I was starting to get ansy because I only had a 45 minute lunch break. When my food finally did come out, it was piping hot, straight out of the oven or whatever- WAHOO! It's always good to know that my food didn't sit in the window for 10 minutes. I tried the rice first and it had to be the fluffiest rice I have ever eaten- I now have a new standard of Excellence for spanish rice because of Irene's! Once my burro cooled a little, I enjoyed it. The red sauce was good, the beans were a tiny bit too runny but good flavor and the beef chunks inside were great, but not very much- more meat and it would have been perfect. The downside? I only saw my waitress 2 times: to take my order and bring me my food, she never reappeared to check my drink, which quickly needed a refill after my hot food came out. This is a good clean restaurant with a nice seasonal decor, you can tell someone really takes pride in how this place looks and presents itself. The food is like the name implies, Real Mexican Food, not cold, greasy imitation. I would absolutely come back and I would bring family and friends.

i would rate this a fat 0 if could. the server screwed up i asked for horchata but i asked if she could bring a tea instead and she brought both, i was not offered a refill when my father was offered a refill because i had a full horchata. my childs chicken fingers were not fully cooked(see photo) and came 10 minutes after everyone elses order. i found a moth in the sugar packet holder and my hand was itchy, i asked the waiter for a discount of 90% because i was very mad. the waitress asked the cook javier (the owners bro.) and came back with the moth in a container! she said they wanted to work it out with us because moths dont sting so i asked for 50% off because i was really itchy and allergic to moths. long story short they thought i was trying to get free food cause i told her that some of the finer resturaunts i visit would have no problem if I asked(actually one time). Received compensated chicken fingers only. screw this place, mcdonalds is across the street!

Was just passing through town and saw Irene's. Stopped in and got a green chile burro and was not disappointed. It was fantastic. Friendly service as well, would definitely go again.

We chose Irene's based on the 4-star Yelp review average, but it didn't live up to that standard. It was very busy for a Saturday afternoon, which was a good sign. But it went downhill after that. Chips and salsa were tasty but the chips were cold and greasy. Tacos were "real Mexican" style (i.e. fried in their own tortilla), but the meat inside was mushy, bland and cold. Enchiladas were very good. Along with the salsa, they helped save a 3-star rating. Service was friendly but inattentive. There were no drink refills. Next time through Globe we will try somewhere else...

Stopped here because it was packed on Thursday night. It's a hole in the wall and the prices are to match. The two of us ate dinner for $9 plus tip and couldn't finish it. Domestic beer is 2.75. Imports 3.75. But we just had soft drinks. Chips are great. Fresh and crisp. Salsa is fine too - plenty spicy. This is authentic Eastern Arizona Mexican style - a blend of New Mexico and Sonoran styles. The green chile burro was excellent. It's very spicy pork and beef with great chile flavor. My son had his usual bean burro. The beans were first rate and the tortillas were fresh. Service was perfect. But you don't go to a place like this for the service. Great food and cheap.

I may be giving this such a high rating because my family and I spent the last two nights in the wilderness, however, the food was great! We were all starving for more than freeze dried food and this place really hit the spot. The service was on point and the chicken chimichanga I had was delicious. I marked it down a star because there was a small chicken bone in it but I honestly didn't care too much. I'd go here again if I were in Globe.

Irene's is the best!!! They have the best bean burros!!! Don't call them burritos or you will be ridiculed by the locals. My normal order--- 10.0 -- 3- bean and cheese burros with a side of rice. Their tortillas just melt in your mouth. Full of crispness and soft texture. Their beans are out of this world. If you want enchiladas or chips and salsa. This place ain't for you. Burros and rice is what they do best and I mean best burros in us!!!!

Amazing and very real authentic Mexican food. This mom & pop restaurant is a gem in Globe. Great menu, fair priced, great service. A place you have to try when visiting Globe.

OK....the service was great, the food okay. We came here because our favorite restaurant was closed (Sunday). We were looking for green chili...their green chili was ok. We also tried the chili relleno on the wairtresses recommendation, it was not good. Too mushy in the middle, not good at all. They do serve beer, but only wine coolers. Nothing special. If you come through Globe....make sure you YELP! There are so many other great/decent restarants in this quaint little town.

I'll give a star for the food, and even that wasn't great. The taco was so hard I couldn't eat it. The salsa was good and had a bite to it which was good. Now then the service was another story. We got chips/ salsa fast but took maybe 20 minutes for anyone to stop and take our order, food came fast, then nothing again. We needed to go, so we got up and went to the register, everyone just ignored us again. Finally someone asked if we had been helped. The waitress was standing there, handed it to her and walked to the kitchen. Not a " thanks, have a great night" nothing. Well nothing is what you got too. If you guys don't like your job, find a new one and don't expect a tip for service like that. I would get take out if I lived there.

Mixed review. The food was really good but... We were glad to find this on Yelp and not have to resort to a chain restaurant in Globe, AZ. We like supporting local, small businesses instead of chains and Yelp has helped with that. It was clear all the locals eat here, it was filled with people. After waiting an hour (we did get salsa and chips), my husband wanted to leave and go somewhere else. I think the waitress in the next section heard him and checked on us. She was surprised our order hadn't been taken. She was serving food to people across the aisle from us that had come in after us. She took our order and our food came quickly. Shouldn't have to wait an hour in a small cafe like this for food. Price however was great and the food was good. We both ate dinner for $9.98.

Nice place on the East side of Globe I have always wanted to try. I found the chips to have too much lard in the cooking oil and the salsa was "just OK". Other than that, the food was very good. Tasted very fresh and homemade, but this doesn't hit my list for the best Mexican food in Globe or Miami.

  • Ricardo L.

The food here is great! You wouldn't think it from a Mexican restaurant but the hot wings are very good. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because like most restaurants in town the service is hit or miss. It doesn't seem to matter how busy they are either. I have been here when they are packed and got great service. On the other hand I have been here with only five or six other customers eating and I am lucky to get a refill on my drink. All in all it is a very good restaurant. If you like hot salsa ask for the extra hot! It never disappoints.

Ended up at Irene's after getting horrible service at another local Mexican restaurant. the service here is excellent. The busser even went out if his way to make sure we were taken care of. Service was prompt and the food was delicious. the tamales were extraordinary. I would've given Irene's five stars if they offered a salsa that was more flavorful and chunky. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is passing through Globe.

We were in Globe for the state little league championship, staying next door at the Quality Inn, and hit this place with about thirty five people, half kids, for dinner. They did a wonderful job of accommodating us and the food, like at La Casita, is outstanding. Only comment I would make is that cinnamon is very prominent in the red sauce. For any in a group who want an alternative, their burgers are reputed to be outstanding.

Pleasant surprise! Took the whole family here as we were passing through from the Valley to the White Mountains. Really good "Old School" food. Rice and beans were good. Combo platters were huge, and amazingly inexpensive. Shredded beef tacos were the consensus favorite. Only nit-picky thing is that I am not a big fan of cinnamon in Mexican food, and they uese a bit it their salsa and enchilada sauce. I might go with green next time.

Went to Irene's for dinner and after 30 Minutes of being seated we finally got our drinks after being there for an hour and forty minutes we finally got our food my three year old was very happy to finally get his beans and rice which were good, however the hamburger my wife ordered had a bun so stale the bun was hard and the beef patty was so charred the burger was completely inedible, i ordered a combination regular burro enchilada and taco, the taco was deep fried to the point of turning the taco to rubber and the beef black i couldn't bring my self to even try the taco the enchilada was nothing but a folded over tortilla with cheese and enchilada sauce poured over it i ate the enchilada however it made my stomach so upset i couldn't even finish my food, we finally threw in the towel and went to leave however i couldn't even do that for another 20 minutes as the person running the register was ignoring me when they finally paid attention to me so i could pay they didn't even know what table i was at or what we had ordered i had to tell them the table number and what our order was so they could dig through a pile of tickets spread all over the counter in a pile to find mine. I am a local resident of the area and this was by far the worst Mexican food I have ever received it was a total wast of $30 I will not be back nor will i be recommending this restaurant to anyone. Very unprofessional establishment i Give a 1 star rating for poor service and poor food quality.

We eat here probably once a week... for one it's close to our home and two, its pretty damn good. They're American food is just as good as the Mexican food and their wings are the best! Prices are very low - I can usually feed a family of 4 for about $20 bucks. We usually get regular burros and rice as well as the wings. Only problem with the wings is its a long wait for them...its worth it though.

On a day trip from Tucson and took a chance on this place. Great value and nice portions overall. Server was friendly but maybe had too many tables for the lunch rush. Food was great and really good salsa. As long as you don't expect Phoenix or Tucson decor you will soon appreciate how much your getting for the price.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
