My mother takes everyone to this place; she's a big fan of tea. I drink tea but am certainly no connoisseur. Their food was pretty good, and the place is very girly and cutesy. Great place to take grandma or mom. Things were reasonable priced; my only complaint was that it was kind of close quarters. I felt like I was dining in a closet. The staff was friendly and the service was good. Unique experience.
OMG, this is the cutest place in Carefree! I have a 7 year old daughter the insisted on having her birthday at English Rose Tea Room. The wait staff were wonderful and we all got to pick out our "fancy hats" before tea was served. The only complaint is that there is not much arm or leg room. However, you can sit outside if you desire more room.
I had a wonderful time here! Myself, my mother, and two guests were able to fit quite well in the outside patio. It was a nice open atmosphere, the cutest decorations, and lovely china. My best friend and I had the quiche and it was delicious, as well as a nice portion size with the salad that came with it. And the tea, oh my goodness. It was so good.

We had dinner here one evening while staying at the resort and had no complaints. I had the half ceasar as an appetizer wich was to my liking though i have had better in the past. As an entree i had the doubleglazed baconwrapped meatloaf with mashed potatoes and redwine/mushroom sauce. This was a really delicious meatloaf with soft and creamy mash and tasty sauce. I would definatly have this again if i ever go back. The halfportion of coconut cake was about a fullsize for me as a scandinavian but a nice end to the meal. Price was not cheap and not expensive but somewhere in between. A bottle of wine started at about 30 $. Service level was high!
We stayed at the Boulders and ate here a few times, and every time is was great. It's part of the hotel, so it's a little pricey, but the service was great and the food good. The chef likes to create a burger special every day, and the ancho spiced burger on the menu was great too. I'm not a big meat guy but did burgers every time here.
Enjoyed dinner here. The service and ambiance were spectacular. We had the octopus appetizer special which was rich in flavors and very unique. The scallops and ribeye were likewise very flavorful. Highly recommend dining here and ask for the outdoor patio.

Good food and pretty dog friendly. Cash only.
Tucked in the little town of Carefree in the Spanish Village, you could blink and miss the Black Mountain Coffee Shop, but you won't miss the aroma of the fresh food wafting out the door. On a beautiful Sunday morning, sitting on the patio was a real treat! Oh, how I wanted to order a cinnamon roll, but it just isn't on my diet . . . so I ordered my old standby, an omelet with mushrooms, a side of rye toast and the breakfast potatoes. (Not really on my diet either!) Where other restaurants might have charged upwards of $10 for that breakfast, BMCS charged a mere $6.75 . . . a bargain which made my meal even tastier! Hubby had the Grubsteak, a plate piled high with chicken fried steak, potatoes, two eggs and instead of the usual biscuits, an english muffin. That, too, was made even more delicious by the $7.95 price tag. It looks like they cater to quite a few regulars as people were coming and going, chatting up the waitresses, carrying out boxes, etc. Black Mountain Coffee Shop has a real neighborhood friendly appeal, and the coffee was good, and cheap! Refills were a little slow, but it was an especially busy morning as it was the last day of the Art and Wine Festival. We've got to go back just to try the biscuits and cinnamon rolls -- when I'm ready to splurge!
Best biscuits and gravy in town!

Upon arrival we were seated quickly but that was the last positive about the experience. The bread was stale and dry, the food was bland and over cooked by a long shot. The Espresso and chocolate martini were prepared nicely. But service was lacking, our waitress was snappy and sarcastic and often forgetful although she sent three or four other employees to the table to help though only 3 tables in the restaurant were occupied. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. You may have better at the gas station but they close at 8 so get there early.
This is our 3rd time coming here for dinner. We live in CT and stay at the Boulders. Come here for dinner!! Staff is very attentive and prompt, wine list good, perfect portions. I had chicken Marsala and hubby had veal parm. Pasta e fagioli is amazing- recipe is from owners (Adele) grandmother.
Actually, I would give this a 3+. Like another viewer, I had zero expectation. The restaurant sits in a cute-as-a-bug's-ear corner of Carefree. The interior is pretty bordering on elegant. The wait staff is good but there is something stand offish about them like that weird cousin in the family who says all the right things but you can't quite figure him out. The food is more NY style Italian than Italian-Italian. Here is the reason for the 3 versus 4 stars. Its NY style is not as good as a NY-NJ Italian restaurant. Yes they have a good marinara sauce and they do a good job of Veal or chicken parmigian but it isn't something to rave about. Still, there is virtually no Italian choice this far north in Scottsdale so we find ourselves coming here 3-4 times a year and we never leave with complaints.

I enjoy the cafe for lunch with girlfriends - the patio has ample seating and is covered, so there's plenty of shade. The menu is great - my favorite is the Cafe Sandwich... yum! The servers are always pleasant and the service is fast. I would recommend this restaurant for lunch to anyone visiting or heading over to Carefree.
Service is fair food is great prices are a little high, overall I come for the food and it is really good
I came up to the Cave Creek/Carefree area today and while killing time I went into the Sundial Cafe for a coffee. It's a really simple little cafe, and there were only a few people dining so the service was prompt. The ladies in there are also very nice. Their menu is actually pretty extensive, they had some really yummy looking salads and big sandwich selection. While I was having coffee two different customers came in to pick up pies that they had ordered for thanksgiving, and another came in asking if they had extras, so i'm guessing they are pretty good!

The Venues Cafe is a great little spot in Cave Creek area. There are some awesome summer happy hour specials with half off all wine, beer, and cocktails! We went on a Wednesday night so not overly busy. Our server Karen was very sweet and helpful. I had the chicken shnitzel which is breaded chicken with a sweet, jam like sauce on it with a side of whipped potatoes and sautéed vegetables. I didn't care much for the sauce but the meal with delicious regardless. My boyfriend ordered the special which was a seafood pasta with marinara sauce. The sauce was a perfect medium between thick and not too heavy. Needless to say, he loved it. Our friend ordered grilled salmon with a side salad. The salmon was cooked to order and was seasoned without being overly buttery or greasy. Overall it was a good experience and perfect location for us. We'll be back!
We ended up at Venue's unexpectedly last night and enjoyed a really nice meal. Not super-crowded on a Wednesday night, so Al, the owner, had time to stop and chat. We started with the hummus trio---cilantro jalapeno, red pepper, and garlic-parmesan served with fresh veggies and warm pita. The cilantro jalapeno and red pepper were really tasty, but we would have liked a bolder garlic in the garlic-parmesan. Of course, we really like garlic! For entrees, DH had the chicken schnitzel. He got a huge portion of chicken, pounded thin, lightly breaded and fried. It was crispy and moist---he was very happy. He switched out the whipped potatoes for Southwest risotto and that was exceptionally good. The mixed veggies were that perfect combo of sauteed so that they were warm and seasoned, but still had the snap of fresh vegetables. I had the seared sea scallops with the quinoa & kaniwa with edamame, bell peppers and grapefruit and a ginger butter sauce. The scallops were NOT gritty (yay!) and perfectly seared. The arugula salad was nothing special, but fresh and good. I didn't care for the grains. It was light and fluffy and should have been perfect for a hot summer night (107!), but to me it had an after-taste of beer. It was weird. DH detected some sort of flavor too, though he didn't agree it was a beer-y. But I think if I got the scallops again, I would switch out for risotto. That was so good. (I want to mention I was really tempted by the coq au vin, as made by their chef, Celine, who is really French, but it just sounded too heavy when it is so hot.) Karen, our server, was wonderful! She made the evening!
We were searching for someplace new and we found it! This was a wonderful surprise. We had no expectations other than we are kinda picky. So... We enter and find ourselves in a moody, copper table topped, rock and brick walled warm environment. The walls are adorned in local art. The music is contemporary cool easy listening. Now for the food. WOW. I'm not easily WOWED! The eggs, onions, peppers and ham was prepared perfectly. You can taste the care and quality. Sweet onions, not white. Orange peppers, not green. Perfect chunks of ham, not yucky stuff in the ham. It was a treat to experience great service and great food in a great space all at the same time. Did I say GREAT? My hat is off to the chef!

China Joy

Last week our family took out from China Joy. Overall I think we all liked the food. Some in our party were a little put off by the elevated spiciness of the hot & sour soup, but I was fine with it. As hot & sour soups go I thought it tasted pretty good, and I consider myself an expert on the subject... We also had an appetizer assortment which was also pretty good as well as a chow mein. What prompted me to YELP China Joy, however, was the prodigious volume of mayonnaise on the walnut prawns. Curiously this dish is not on the menu I'm looking at online, so either the menu is old or China Joy improvised the dish when we ordered it off-menu unbeknownst. While maybe not one of the great mysteries of our age, here's what we know: we ordered it, we ate it and it jiggled with excessive mayonnaise. This had to have been a mistake - they can't possibly serve this dish like that on a regular basis. Overall, the food was fine, but please tell the Chef to go light on the mayo if you order walnut prawns.
I ordered the Lo Mein and my wife had the Mongolian Beef lunch special. The egg flower soup was way too salty as were both dishes for that matter. I haven't had fresh crunchy vegetables in a Chinese dish since Mao was entombed and this place hasn't either. The waitress was a bit odd. Reading the reviews I can see why. She probably cooked in the back we just didn't see it. She came around later and asked if I want my change. It appear she also determines her tips. That cost her. Yes I got my change.
having been going here for a while. Parents use to have a house in cave creek area so this was one of our stops. The owners are very friendly and know us bye name as we use to be regulars before moving further away from the area. We have had always great experience when here. The best time to get here is right when there open they tend to get a little busy for dinner.

Four of us went there for dinner and really enjoyed it. It is inside of a resort and was quiet and enjoyable. They have outdoor seating which would be wonderful when it is cooler as it is around the pool and you could enjoy the sunset. I had the scallops which were cooked just right and were very tasty. Service was very good. They are open until 10 pm and things pretty well shut down at that time. However, it was restful, good food and enjoyable. Worth the drive.
I've lived in the far north valley for several years now and never knew this place existed, let alone existing in a resort that I've never heard of. With the exception of dessert, the food was good. My scallops were prepared perfectly and while my lobster bisque was somewhat underseasoned, it was tasty as well. My vanilla/strawberry cake was dry, nearly flavorless and the icing was terrible. Despite having a decent meal, I don't think I'll return and here's why: Remember the ballroom scene in The Shining when Jack walks in and it's completely empty? That's how this restaurant felt. We were the only people in there and although the restaurant was pretty inside, it faces the pool/room area which is nice enough but lacking considering it's down the street from The Boulders. It was honestly kind of depressing.
Thursday is hamburger and a mixed drink or a beer $12.95. You will not want to go without reservations. great food . Try this place on this day and I think you will like it
