Five stars for the fried green tomatoes! Did need any ranch dressing; just a little salt. The breading was light and crunchy yet savory. Staff was pleasant and service was good. Best fried green tomatoes I've ever had!

Stayed at the Hardy Spring River Lodge and found this place right up the street. Service was good other than they didn't clear plates as we finished them. I ordered the BLT. Very delicious. Also ordered the lemon meringue pie. The lemon part was delicious, but the whipped cream was quite disgusting and literally peeled right off the pie. We there at closing and they let some people in past closing. Was also 32$ for a BLT, 4 pieces of catfish, cake, and pickles. A little on the expensive side for a diner.

Excellent "made to order" Catfish and good service. We tried the fried green tomatoes and they were delicious! I travel to Hardy once a year to visit my grandmother from Ca,. Will be coming back to Downhome Country Kitchen again.

I've been here a couple of different times to eat. Tonight, we came on Sunday. It was very crowded, but we were seated in about 10-12 min. I got the veggie plate, which was ok--nothing just over the top wonderful. The only complaint I have is that I didn't care for the fried okra nor the corn muffin. The okra was too greasy and tasted like it had been fried in a couple day old grease and the muffin was a bit dry. My husband and his friend both got steak and they loved it with Country Bob's Steak Sauce. I don't eat steak, so I'll have to take their word on it. What I can honestly say earned this little country restaurant a few extra perks in my culinary book was the homemade desserts!! The strawberry cake had icing sliding off of it and the homemade peanut butter pie was really good. I'd return just for the desserts!

An interesting decor. Converted gas station into a quaint restaurant. Smoked ribs are delicious. Sweet potato fries are okay. Earthquake (German chocolate with a coconut filling is the best. Friendly staff. With the regulars in there you and the interaction between the staff and them, you can tell that it is a very family oriented in place.

I visit this restaurant at least 3 times every time I visit the area. Their chicken n dumplings have always been awesome. I couldn't wait to get my dumpling fix. HOWEVER, I ordered them last Friday night---and the meal was terrible! There was one tiny piece of chicken at the bottom of my bowl---that was it! It was a bowl of dumplings---no chicken. The corn cobette was water logged. The fried cabbage had no bacon and tasted like it had been sitting in the pot all day. My mashed potatoes were good, though. My husband had a briskit sandwich that cost 7.00, with no sides. The meat was at least 1/3 fat. He left hungry. I left disgusted. We won't be eating there again.

I've visited Hardy every summer of my life, and my family has had a cabin there for the last 50-something years. I've never known us to regularly eat at a restaurant every single trip until the Downhome Country Kitchen opened. Now, at some point during every stay, we have to come here and eat. Of special note: the pancakes are the size of a hubcap. I'm not exaggerating. They're crazy delicious, though, so get one & share it with someone. The desserts are all incredible. I could never pick one over any of the others; I get a different one each time. The meatloaf is very good, & so is the mac & cheese. One star deducted for the service; it can be kinda slow. Every so often your whole group will get their food except for one person, and that one plate comes out all by itself like 10 minutes later. It certainly hasn't stopped us from going there, though.

We went back to Downhome when in town again recently and ate there twice during our stay. It is still very good home cooking and the service was friendly! We will be back again to Hardy again during the holidays and will definitely go back to Downhome again.

I'll give 3 stars, but probably should be more like 2.5. Was here for lunch on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the menu, there were three lunch specials on the blackboard. One of those was chicken-n-dumplin's. I ordered that. It comes with three sides, of which there were about 6 sides to choose from. The entree was a very small portion. It was served in a small cup that you would normally serve sides in. In fact, each of the sides themselves were in the same cups. All 4 small cups were on a plate. The chicken-n-dumpling's were straight from a can. The carrots were either from a can or were "baby carrots" from a bag that had been boiled and half-way candied to impart a sugary sweet flavor. The au-gratin potatoes seemed to be from a package, but not sure. The beans were probably made in house. I would say there was about $2.00 worth of food on the plate for which I was charged $7.99. That's a pretty big mark-up. All items combined, it was "just" enough for lunch, but far from a value at about $12.49 with drink and tip. Also there was a table of teenagers, some of whom seemed to work there, who were very loud and boistrous and grating on my nerves. Doubt I'll stop there again.

I honestly can't think of a bad thing to say about this place. The staff is super friendly and everyone knows everyone. When I am home, I always stop in here. It's like home cooking, but less fuss and dishes to clean. Try to Home Fries, they are worth it.

I like their country ham with red-eye gravy for breakfast. The food is all around very good. Friendly staff, and good service. It really is down home here.

Called way ahead to reserve a table & our party ended up sitting in 3 different areas. Poor planning. Server never offered specials & as it was our first visit we were penalized by having to wait longer for our meals just because they weren't specials. When we finally got the food, it was all very good! No complaints about the food at all, just mediocre service. The atmosphere was a bit loud as the walls had some sort of metal covering in places. I would have given a perfect rating if we had just carried out our meals.

Yum! God ole' home style country food! We really enjoyed eating here while on vacation in the area. My husband had the fried catfish, I had the chicken fried chicken with gravy and mashed potatoes, and my 10 year old had the ribs. Everything was so delicious. My son ate every bit of his ribs! The owner and all the employees were so friendly and the service was terrific! The sweet tea was very good. I wished I'd left room for dessert because they had a wonderful selection. I would totally go there again!

Quite nice actually! Great prices, and a whole bunch of vegetarian options. The fried green tomatoes were great! Friendly atmosphere and food was served nice and hot. Hope to go back for breakfast!
