Not impressed. I was trying to choose a steakhouse from the limited choices in the area. I always use yelp to help me choose. None of the restaurants have very many reviews around here. We did drive out of the way to eat here. I don't mind small old restaurants because they usually have the best food. This one didnt. The menu is severely limited. I like mashed potatoes with my steaks. No mashed potatoes. You could get fries or baked potatoes. They might have had one more option. They had four different appetizers to choose from. Onion rings, wings, chicken livers or chicken gizzards. Not my thing. I chose the ribeye steak medium well for my dinner. My steak was not cooked medium well. It was still purplish and very squishy. It didnt taste seasoned to me. Just plain. It came with a small salad and baked potato. They serve pepsi products here. Overall my meal was not good. To me it was not worth the drive. Sorry!

Awesome little hole in the wall on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa. Steaks were great, the onion rings are for sure the best appetizer on the menu. Menu has other things I would like to go back and try. Great food for a really good price. Had the Nicodemus, it was pretty good not what I was expecting. The wait staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Awesome environment and service. Old school style. Me and my dad always come here when he visits and will continue to do so.

I remember home game days making the trip to "Nicks in the Sticks" and ordering the small filet and a Zombie at prices even a poor student could afford. None of the waiters ever wrote down your order but always remembered it perfectly. Whenever my father would come visit, he always insisted we eat here. It has been a while since I have been so I am glad to see it is still in business and doing as well as ever.

It is in the sticks!! And worth the drive to nowhere. Don't expect white table cloths, a wine list and music in the background. This is a meat place in the woods. Small menu of steaks. I've spent $$$$ at steak restaurants in Atlanta but had a better meal with the four of us under $60 The only issue is can't drink in the parking lot when there is a 3 hour wait. But I'm sure it's a state things

Really awesome filet! No steak sauce required, as it should be. Onion rings were amazing!

If you are looking for pretentious and fancy, Nick's is not for you. If you are looking for a unique place with great steak and great, friendly service, don't miss this place. I was in Tuscaloosa for a couple of days and decided to try Nick's out. The ribeye was cooked to order and the service was the best that I have had in a long time. I might even go back tomorrow night.

Excellent food! You'll want to leave as soon as you see the building, but don't. It's my favorite restaurant in Tuscaloosa. The steaks are extremely good and well below what you would expect on price. The ranch dressing with blue cheese chunks is great. If you want to eat without a wait you have to get there when they first open at 5. It is extremely small inside and gets very crowded.

Nicks on the sticks was all that I was looking for in a restaurant. The nicodemus's are good but they are very sugary. I have never had fried gizzards so decided to give it a whirl, the small was definitely something I would consider a large so we didnt finish them. I probably wouldn't get the gizzards again though. The filet i got was delicious and I tried a bite of the catfish dinner which was also very good both can be had as combo set for under $10; this includes salad and choice of onion rings, baked potato or french fries. Most food is fried so be prepared for that. Very friendly waitstaff, and very causal place.

Great good. Great drinks. Great atmosphere. Not great for groups of more than 4 unless you're willing to wait. If you have to wait, order a nicodemus and enjoy.

Simply put...you go to Nick's in the Sticks for the five star experience. If you are looking for gourmet steakhouse dining, you are in the wrong place. It's an institution in Tuscaloosa, and the last remaining (original) of what was three Nick's restaurants (the other two were Nicks on the Strip and Nick's Downtown in the 80s/early 90s) and one that should not be missed by visitors to Tuscaloosa. Juicy steaks, strong drinks, artery-clogging good side dishes/appetizers, and an all-around good, comfortable vibe, and great for people-watching....all for a fantastic value! One small word of caution, the restaurant is very small/cozy and the wait can be lengthy. Go with time to kill.

Best steakhouse value ever. Large filet+nickedemous(sp?)= happiness. Loaded baked potato is great too.

Perfectly cooked steaks, affordably priced menu, and strong drinks. What more could you ask?

For a place that only holds about 30 people on a booming Saturday night and where the wait is usually about an hour to be seated this place is totally worth all the hassle. The steaks are absolutely awesome and you cannot beat the price. If you have to wait to be seated be sure to grab you a drink, also priced fairly, and relax outside. This steakhouse is hard to beat when it comes to taste and value. Expect to spend $30 (Two steak dinners, and a couple of drinks).

The wait after I had ordered was long. The fries tasted no better than the frozen ones I heat up in the oven. The catfish was real good! No sweet tea, only unsweet.

I joined up with a friend in Shreveport for a road trip to Tuscaloosa, AL. For hours he kept telling me that we needed to get to town in time to eat at Nick's in the Sticks. It was a grueling drive, but worth every mile. Granted, we came for other business as driving seven hours for dinner is just crazy. It may be crazy, but Nick's knows how to make a steak. I enjoyed a succulent ribeye with onion rings. The onion rings were good, the steak was excellent, and the ambiance just whispers that you found a hidden gem. This establishment definitely flies under the radar as my friend was introduced to it a couple of years ago by a local. Next time I'm in town I don't have to worry about what I'm going to eat for dinner.

It's not much to look at, but if you like mom and pop joints it's pretty good. A simple steakhouse menu. Homemade salad dressing. Good priced steaks. T-bone is the best steak on the menu. The kids chicken nuggets are gross though, I didn't blame the kids for not eating them.

As always, excellent service, steak cooked perfectly. Enjoyed Jimbo's birthday dinner with Nancy, Laura, Steve, and Jimbo. Don't get no better than that.

Great little dive type place! Friendliest staff and excellent steaks! My only complaint it that they don't have many salad dressing choices, however, when I asked the waiter if he had any Italian dressing he quickly brought me out a huge bottle of dressing. The nickodemus was a little too strong for me, so I stuck to some cold beer. It was tasty though and something I would've loved back in my college days!! They also have a cash bar outside while you're waiting for a table. We will be back!

The filet was delicious and cooked like I ordered.....salad was fresh and the blue cheese dressing was delicious...I ended up dipping everything from the whole meal in it. We also tried the fried shrimp and loved it. Waited an hour outside with a hundred people blowing smoke in my face while we waited but it was still worth it! ;)

Went to Nick's after finding it on yelp. This place is very small so be ready for a long wait during peak times. I really enjoyed my meal and time at Nick's. I was dining alone and had to wait about 45 minutes to get a table. I ordered a large bacon wrapped Filet cooked medium rare with onion rings instead of a baked potato for $11.95. The steak was very tasty, so much so that I didn't even use steak sauce. The onion rings were great especially dipped in the Ranch/blue cheese dressing that came with the included salad. They serve 3 dressings with your salad - French, Thousand Island/Russian, and Ranch with Blue Cheese crumbles which was my favorite. Hint: When you're done with your meal and ready to leave just go up to the counter to pay. Don't wait for your server to bring you a check. They will not bring you one.

Stopped here after reading reviews on yelp while visiting Tuscaloosa. Very friendly staff. Looks like mostly locals. We had to wait a few for a table because so busy. I had the small filet with baked potato. The steak was awesome, cooked just the way I ordered. Very tender and juicy. I would recommend Nicks in the Sticks if you are in Tuscaloosa.

I love this place! It's great for college students on a budget. I've had both the filet and the fried chicken and they're incredible. The chicken is practically the whole chicken on your plate and the batter used is amazing. My favorite is definitely the bacon wrapped filet with a baked potato. The only bad thing about this place is that the line is usually long and there isn't space to wait inside. Other than that, the staff is friendly and the food and drinks are great. I highly recommend it for a different sort of dining experience.

This was my 1st trip to the famous "Nicks in the sticks". My sweet wife is a Tuscaloosa girl and this is a long time favorite for her. For starters we each had a Zombie (really sweet) and shared an order of onion rings. We each ordered the small filet W/baked potato. Nicks gets 3 stars for food. Everything was ok but nothing special. The bacon wrapped filets looked to be what you could buy at any Sam's club or similar place. I give Nicks 5 stars for the dining experience. The small out of the way place is easy to miss if you are not looking carefully. The building is spartain to say the least. But, the close quarters, the friendly staff, the atmosphere of comfort in the most unpretentious setting is really great. So, I average the stars to get a 4 star rating. At the end of the day I can say that I can't wait to go back again!

There are scattered moments in this life when everything falls into place. You are in exactly the right place at the right time, and it feels great. I don't know if it was the first few sips of my jet fuel-esque beverage that was beginning to course through my veins. It might have been the classic weathered décor of an honest, authentic dive restaurant. Maybe it was the fact that I was having dinner with my grandpa, Pappy Duncan. Just us two guys out for a steak and some conversation. It could have been the primal joy in eating a well-cooked ribeye. I'm not sure what it was, but it was darn good. A few minutes earlier, we had been headed down a dark two lane road on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa. Nick's Original Filet House (colloquially known as Nicks in the Sticks) would be our destination. Doubt crept into my mind. There's no way there could be a restaurant out here. There's nothing out here at all except for darkness and the yellow lines in the middle of the road. Then, out of the darkness, I saw a sign. Well, to be precise, I saw a lack of a sign. It was the empty metal frame that contained Nick's restaurant sign until some tornado or freak storm blew it away years ago. They never replaced it. The empty metal frame works just fine, and it is a fitting welcome. Imagine one of those sad television commercials pleading for just 35 cents a day to help save the life of a child. Picture the footage of lean-to hovels and cinder block houses with murky puddles of water or dusty gravel. That's about what Nick's In the Sticks looks like at first glance. I kid. It's not that bad, but you get the idea. The ambiance inside is that of an old bar or maybe a VFW Post. There's aging wood panelling everywhere, and, as is the custom in these parts, the walls are covered in Alabama football memorabilia and paintings. The ten tables were all jammed packed. It was pretty loud in there as the small room practically thrummed with a happy, boisterous energy. I suspected that Nicodemus might have something to do with the atmosphere. The Nicodemus is the signature cocktail at Nick's, and the word on the internet is that this is a potent concoction. As a looked around at the other tables, I could see many of them festooned with styrofoam cups filled with red punch topped with a cherry. I nervously ordered one when the waiter stopped by. I was a little surprised when he asked to see my I.D.. This must be some drink! If he asks me to sign a waiver, then I might have to rethink my order. Pappy and I then ordered our steaks. He had the bacon-wrapped filet with baked potato. I ordered the biggest thing I could find, the ribeye with onion rings. The food was delicious. I could tell that my ribeye wasn't a high-falootin dry-aged, organically farmed piece of prime beef. It had character, it had seasoning, and it was cooked to the medium rare I asked for. The onion rings were some of the best I've ever had: sweet with a thick buttermilk batter. I will admit that the Nicodemus had gone to work on my physiology. I felt warm, happy, and quite hungry. I was really enjoying the atmosphere. I was chatting with pappy and peering around at the Daniel Moore Alabama football prints. These realistic paintings capture great moments in Alabama football history and feature names like, "The Kick", "Rebirth in the Swamp", and "Goal Line Stand." Pappy was telling me about the last time he had been to Nick's. It was 25 years ago, and the table he sat at was right next to ours. Maybe in the light of day in some blind taste test, I might not be overwhelmed by the experience like I was, but everything combined for an awesome night. We wrapped up our dinner and went up to the bar to pay. There's no cash register or touch-screen computer here. You just point at your table, and the owner adds up your bill by hand in pencil. Ah, Nick's. As we headed back out into the dark Alabama night, I looked back at the little brick building with the aged red and white awning. That was definitely the right meal, at the right place, at the right time.

Nick's in the Stix! Along with Dreamland BBQ, this place is a Tuscaloosa institution. And it really is in the sticks...ok, to some, well, most people, Tuscaloosa itself is the sticks so add 5 more miles to that. Nick's is famous for their steaks, so order the filet. Wrapped with bacon, I don't think they do much beyond throwing it on the grill, but it is one of the most flavorful I've ever eaten. I'm still thinking about it 10 years later! Unless things have changed, and I doubt they have, the steaks are always served with a salad made with iceberg lettuce and a trio of dressings on the table. Skip the Italian vinaigrette and go for the special sauce- Ranch and Blue Cheese mixed. I have never been able to replicate the magic of this dressing. I think they must add extra blue cheese chunks. It is so worth the calories! And you have to get their signature libation, the Nicodemus. Tastes like fruit punch with a kick and goes down a little too easily. There are only 15 tables, so either arrive early or be prepared to wait. Large parties (6+) are difficult to accommodate. If you're ever in that neck of the woods, I highly recommend making a detour further into the sticks and head for Nick's.

This place had the reputation as an amazing restaurant when I lived there, but I didn't find the steak to be of very high quality, and it seemed greasey as memory serves.

The best 30 dollar steak you can buy for 12 bucks. The fillet falls apart with out a knife, order it rare, they do it right! Make sure you get there early on weeknights, avoid on weekends. Salad dressing is pretty awesome too... They have a drink called the Nicademus that I am not a fan of, but others will tell you different.

Love the gizzards and the BLT. Naturally, the filet is probably the way to go for your first visit.

I have been wanting to eat here for quite sometime now; the soft, yet growing, rumor of one 'Nicks in the Sticks' buzzed around campus. The local name does justice to its location--it is very much in the sticks, and you will miss it if you're not keenly watching the right side of the road down 15th street, miles past most of you who are reading this have ever ventured. They are famed for their steaks, although I have heard pleasant things of their burgers as well. I went for the steak. I ordered the large fillet. I was not impressed with the sight of their exiguous baked potatoes, so I ordered a side of onion rings. The fillet was on the smaller side of being "large", but was well cooked with juice exuding from within. I wasn't, however, that impressed. It was wrapped in bacon, which gave it a nice hint of smoke, but I'm not so sure that is the best option for steaks. I've often seen ones similar, though slightly larger, in local grocery stores. A point worth noting is that I had no need for steak sauce because of its tenderness and juiciness--a bonus here. The onion rings were large (larger than the steak) and were crispy and pipping hot. Very good; I recommend them. The small salad you get before the meal is in a word: bland. They give you the option of three dressings: Italian, Ranch, and Thousand Island. Its lettuce and purple cabbage from a store-bought package. The dinner rolls you receive with the meal are slightly warmed, maybe toasted, white plain-jane rolls found in Piggly Wiggly--like Sunbeam or something cheap. I was thoroughly disappointed in them. A good bread/roll is a great accent to a dining experience. Overall, Nicks is a good 'hole-in-the-wall', and they offer good steaks, but our waiter was lack luster, stoic, and non-communicative; the plates on which the steak arrives barely allowed me to cut it and not knock off the onion rings in doing so--it was miniature; there were packs of flies that vexed my counterpart and I the entire time; and the water was given in a tiny, plastic cup, which I was constantly needing refilled because of its stature. I am glad I finally went and tried Nicks, but more than likely I will not be returning. I can eat for less somewhere else and receive higher quality food.

It gets my Vatican rating. Do not go here if you want someone fawning all over you with a bow tie on. If you want a great steak and a great cocktail.....this is the place. The whole in the sticks thing gives it a kind of "on safari" feel. We are going out on a patrol to find a steak house with really good drinks. An adventure if you will... ;) Take a cab....because you will down a few.

I had heard about this place for quite some time before I finally decided to go there a few months ago. When I arrived I had to take a double take because it was much smaller and older then I had imagined. When I went inside the owner was very friendly, seated me and it was very quaint with dollar bills taped to the ceiling. All I wanted was a nice simple piece of meat, salad and baked potato and I was glad to find it on the menu at a reasonable price. When my food arrived the steak was flavorful, actually done properly and not overcooked. The atmosphere was humble, the service was friendly and the food was good. If you're looking for a place with a good simple menu and honest piece of meat, I would definitely recommend this place.
