The best food in the world doesn't make up for awful service. Condescending at best.

I'm actually a big fan of Sam & Greg's. I recommend it to everyone I know because I think their pizza is amazing and there aren't many locally owned places in Huntsville to eat. That being said, while I love their pizza, this isn't really a place I could imagine myself going to unless I was already headed downtown for another reason. Previous reviews mentioned snobby hipsters, and while I wouldn't go quite that far, the staff does always seem distracted and a bit impatient. The gelato is good and there are creative flavors such as Guinness and pumpkin, but it's expensive and the portions are small. I realize that this is small-batch stuff, but it's not worth the extra cost in my opinon. I go there for the pizza but the service is lacking a bit, and the gelato isn't worth the price tag.

The gelato was good, the initial employee taking our order not as good. He was new, so I'll cut him some slack, but he didn't know what they had on their menu. We went in there for a specific item and when we asked for it he said they didn't have such a thing. After asking him for it twice, I asked one of the other employees who knew exactly what I was asking for. The Gelato was good. I had a half hazelnut and half chocolate and it was tasty. My son ordered a orange julius flavored sorbet which apparently was totally melted. Again the first employee had no clue it wasn't supposed to be that way. After he started scooping it I even told him it didn't look right. Overall, the gelato good, service sucked, we don't live here so we won't be back.

Sam & Greg's is an un-Huntsville trendy little Euro-cafe on the square in Huntsville (where more cafe's, bistros and restaurants need to be). You will probably want to ignore my entire review, as I am a Euro-Gelato snob who lived near Napoli in Italy, and used to eat gelato every day. First this is not gelato (I don't know if Sam & Greg's claim this to be gelato or not), I don't think it is ice-cream either. I don't know what it is, but it is cold, hard and fruity. I don't think there is enough sugar in it for it to be gelato. I doesn't melt like gelato melts. I sat outside and had raspberry and hot spicy chocolate ice-cream. The raspberry was a bit of a seed fest, and I tried the spicy hot chocolate, which was not very chocolaty, and I don't know what the put in it to make it spicy, but it didn't taste very nice, and did not produce an overall balanced flavor. I couldn't finish the chocolate as I really didn't like it (how can you not like chocolate ice-cream, they butchered the flavor!!). I am being overly harsh, I understand that a lot of people in Huntsville will think this is quite good. Overall this place is in the right spirit, and I probably will be back, but just kind of pissed off. Just because were live in Huntsville ,we shouldn't have to just settle for Gelato that is not quite right, or good. Maybe people haven't travelled to Europe, or any of the places in US that do know how to do gelato well, as there are little good italian gelaterias everywhere. Life is too short to just settle for low quality, flavorless food. Anyway, that is my Sunday morning rant. I am a grumpy old B@$%&*!

Been here a few times... Hipster capital of Huntsville. Overpriced, average pizza with a side of serious attitude from the staff. Admittedly I have not tried the gelato, but it looks pretty good. The main issue I have with this place is the hipster attitude. I've been to places like the vortex in Atlanta - there is a lot hipster attitude there as well - but it adds to the character of the restaurant and it fits with the whole theme. They also happen to be friendly whether you are in skinny jeans and flannel or not. This place just has it thrown in as more of an inconvenience. Any restaurant where I feel like I've been brow-beat and dismissed is immediately on my shit list. Hostess (host)/cashier/waitress (waiter) - its your job to be friendly and assist me. Rolling your eyes and huffing and puffing is a quick way to lose business - and as you can see here, it also gathers bad reviews. Couple pointers if you find yourself here: Straws, napkins, plates (maybe silverware?) - get your own and know where they are. God forbid you have to ask. They are next to the coke machine. Know what you want ahead of time and have payment ready. It will avoid some aggravation. Keep questions to a minimum. As dumb as it sounds you're likely to get a friendlier answer out of the guy in line next to you, so ask them before an employee. Expect to deal with arrogant hipsters. On a side note, this is generally the issue with downtown and why its tough to legitimately see the 'resurgence' the mayor envisions. This area tends to be overpriced and packed with smug. Couple that with the only real reason for being on the square is to go to court and you just don't have much draw to the downtown area. A pretty sidewalk is not going to fix the issue. We need real businesses that people want to go to. From the other reviews I may have just come at a bad time, but really there is no excuse for it.. So I stand by my review.

It's a nice local place the gelato is great the pizza is good. The Mocha was a bit overly sweet.

I've been here a few times, and it's been great every time. I love their pizzas, and I'm working on trying every one of their gelato flavors.

Great atmosphere, relaxed and Italian looking. They serve REAL gelato (as opposed to ice cream) and espresso drinks (cappuccino, etc). Great outdoor seating also available--on a nice quiet street. OK pizza; as a New Yorker I am a harsh pizza critic.

We LOVE this place! The food is wonderful (try the Pesto Margarita or the Polynesian...so yummy!) the staff is always friendly and they deliver to our office!!! We couldn't really ask for more!

Great outdoor patio and the "Guido" pizza is to die for!

Horrible service! Researched Saturday night hours and found they were open until 10pm. Headed over there from the opposite side of town just for gelato. Got there at 9:35 and everything was packed up and the kid working wasn't willing to serve us. Should have gone to cold stone, maggie moos, brusters or anywhere else. Next time I will!

The last time I was there, the ice cream quality and quantity had gone down. The pizza is still fresh, delicious and oh so tasty!

This is a cute place with very friendly staff. My husband and I both had a small pizza. He made his own and I had the pesto. They pesto was great, and my husband like his and wants to go back. they also have coffee, and Gelato. I can't wait to go back and try more things.

Artsy coffeehouse meets pizza, beer and gelato and become friends... i'm definitely coming back here often! Food The pizza hit the spot! i tried both the Margherita pizza and the buffalo chicken. I liked the margherita a lot. It had lots of melted cheese, slices of tomato and the crust was not exactly crispy, but firm, chewy and just had the right texture. Unfortunately, i had a mocha, which was really good, but it satiated my sweet tooth enough that i didn't feel like gelato. I'll have to come back! ambiance the cafe had this rad art house feel and comfy looking sofas in the front. when the weather gets a lil cooler, it'd be nice to sit outside. i did come during off hours, for an early lunch, so there was no crowd when i was there. bottom line is i think the combo of pizza, beer, coffee, gelato, live music, chill atmostphere make this a multitasking hangout. the only thing missing is a bar! me likey!

Sam and Greg's is a great place located on the north side of the square just a few doors down from The Jazz Factory. Sam and Greg's is a gelateria and pizzaria and is owned by a couple named Sam (short for Samantha, I think) and Greg. Opened in December of 2007, Sam and Greg's was started by a couple tired of working in the technology industry. When you walk in the door, you're greeted with a smile and hello. The place is decorated with vibrant colors, and an interesting fact is that the counter top was designed and made by Greg. The pizza is hand made, and the two that I've tried, the Southwestern and Cajun, have both been excellent and were jam packed with great flavors. The gelato is hand made by Sam and tastes great as well. I had mix two flavors for me today, coconut and chocolate, and it hit the spot. Also available is coffee, espresso, and a small selection of beer and wine. Sam and Greg are great hosts and have always made the time to speak with me. Sam even discussed making gelato with me. Normally, I would've marked this at four stars, but what bumped it to five is how friendly Sam and Greg are. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat and great gelato, you can't beat Sam and Greg's. Pros: Great food Friedly service Price Cons: None that I can immediately think of

I have been here a couple times now: once with kids and once without. The pizza is very good, but not the mind-blowing excellence that I expected from reviews. Still, I was a fan of the pizza given the variety and the construction of the pie (for me, this means the appropriate amount of sauce). The first time around we had a Deluxe while the second time we had the Key West. I would say the Key West was more memorable -- in a good way -- simply because I have not had mango on a pizza before. As the name implies, pizza is only part of what Sam and Greg's does well. The gelato is creative and excellent and I was extremely pleased to find gelato-type options downtown! I don't remember all he flavors we had the first time around, but I fondly recall the Figgy Pudding gelato from my latest visit. I admit that the Christmas song does not do Figgy Pudding any justice, because it was awesome. Wish I could have handled a sampling of all the Christmas flavors.

Always can count on great service and food. Gelato is always fresh and pizza is always served hot. Nice selection of local brews. Noticeably clean also.

This place is ok. The pizza is ok and the gelato is ok. It certainly beats eating a chain brand pizza, but it was not anything particularly special. I also found the gelato to be a little too gritty for my tastes.

I defy you to find another place within 100 miles that serves gelato. Sam & Greg's offer a neat selection of gelati ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ge… ) in downright strange flavors, (such as avocado, nutella, spicy chocolate to name a few) which I implore you to give a shot if you are feeling adventurous. Also be aware that for a "bowl" of gelato, the pice is almost $6. I think it's worth it, but some may not. They offer some very good pizza choices for those who are seeking a change from the boring pepperoni/supreme routine. They are also one of the only places in Northeast AL that offer Greek-style pizza (the aptly named "Guido") and Gyros, both of which are delicious. This is a wonderful place to visit post-Ghost Walk, which takes place on Saturday nights in summer nearby. Go in, cool off, enjoy a gelato.

I got to Sam & Greg's weekly. Friendly team, nice environment, good coffee and gelato, outdoor seating. Bonus: next door to XXI and steps away from the park.

Nice quiet atmosphere. Family friendly. Good pizza. Looks can be deceiving. Go upstairs for more tables and a little more privacy. Very cozy. They don't have pizza by the slice, but a small pizza is enough for one and will cost around $8. The gelato is a nice touch too.

I have been there a few times for various reasons. 1) I walk there with my dog. They have a nice place to sit outside have a cold beer and a gyro (yes a gyro at a pizza place) I like it. 2) meet family there. This is a place where you can have a beer but also sit with family . . . not an option for other restaurants downtown 3) GREAT PIZZA!! good flavor, fresh toppings, really I am impressed. PS THEY WOULD GET 5 stars if . . .well not to say that it isn't worth it but it is kind of expensive. . . Bring your whole wallet

Visiting Sam & Greg's is an absolute must for anyone visiting Huntsville! Try any of the gelato flavors. You will not regret it. Unless you can't take a little spice... then do not mess with the spicy chocolate. But at least try it. I loved it! The pistachio is delicious! I have tried gelato from many places and I have to say, Sam & Greg's is flawless with their gelato creations. Can't wait until my next visit to Huntsville so I can get some gelato.

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. What more can you ask for? I only had the pesto margherita pizza, but it was some of the best I've had (if a little greasy). The combination of coffee, pizza, and gelato makes it a one-stop shop for a good lunch or dinner. There was also a quality jazz band playing while we were there, and we were able to sit upstairs and enjoy the music without it being too loud. Will definitely come back.

  • Mary R.

I love, love, love Sam & Greg's! The pizza crust has a great texture, the sauce has the right amount of tanginess, and the toppings are great. Then there is the Gelato - it's the best gelato I've ever had. You must go - go now - just stop whatever you are doing and go eat pizza and gelato. Your tummy will thank you.

I've tried the gelato, and it's delicious. They have a little more than a dozen choices, and the peanut butter one was great. They don't have an air hockey table anymore. Instead, the upstairs area is full of tables and chairs. I guess they needed the room. It's got a cool painting on the wall up there, too.

Cute place! They have great pizzas (a bit pricey, but worh it), and I haven't tried their gelattos yet but I've heard they're yummy. I just love the ambiance and location, I always enjoy anything that's downtown.

Due respect to "Emily W.", but she strikes me as the kind of idiot that makes life just a little more difficult for everyone she meets. Ignore her; this place is great! My wife and I went to Sam's for lunch on the strength of the other two reviews here on Yelp, and we had a wonderful time. The pizzas are quite good, the coffee is excellent, and the gelato would likely be the best in town even if there were competitors. When you enter you're greeted by the gelato case; trust me when I say you'll find room for dessert. They had maybe 20 different kinds when I went, from subdued vanillas to a mexican chocolate and "carrot pomegranate sorbetto", which sounds like something out of a Shel Silverstein poem. The blueberry gelato was wonderful, and the mexican chocolate had that perfect edge of spicy heat that makes eating ice cream insteresting. The coffee bar is next; it's also where you order your food. My wife ordered a cheese pizza (made fresh, and it's not like they don't keep a cheese pizza in the warmer) and I had the daily special, a cajun pizza with andouille sausage, shimp, and lots of other stuff. Like I said, both pizzas were made fresh and brought to us from the back still bubbling. I had an americano with my gelato; the barrista was quick and competent, and they still use the manual espresso machines instead of the automatics at Starbucks. It was a pleasant atmosphere, pleasant staff, good food, and awesome ice cream. Four stars.

Best pizza in Huntsville. The gelato is definitely worth a trip too. Wish they would stay open late night. The Polynesian and the BBQ chicken are my recommendations.

My husband and I wanted to try a new pizza place and so came to Sam and Greg's on a Friday night for dinner. The atmosphere is very arts Italian and they were not crowded but pleasantly busy. We ordered a Super salad and small Deluxe pizza. The salad was yummy and big enough for us to share although the cashier gave us a little attitude about asking for two types of salad dressing. Apparently the dressing comes in individual packets and so he didn't want to give us two. The pizza is hot and fresh out of the oven and VERY tasty. We both enjoyed it very much. The toppings were flavorful and fresh. The crust is not thick and bready but more crispy which I like. However, the small (8") only produced four pieces and wasn't really enough for the two of us. We weren't hungry per se; we just weren't happily stuffed. Luckily, we were able to top of the meal with gelato. I tried a couple of flavors and decided to go with "Birthday Cake" on the recommendation of the server (who, incidentally, had a much better attitude than the cashier). The gelato was amazingly delicious! I was so pleased with my flavor choice. I will definitely return for a meal or just gelato.

This is a very chill coffee shop. It's located near the historic district; the aesthetics of the joint are beautiful. Brick walls, hip handmade counter-tops and tables, local paintings on the walls, and couches for maximum slacking. The food is incredible, others have covered that aspect better than I. All that needs to be said is that everything here is hand-made with care, including the eats. They do serve beer, but do not have a full bar. Come in here on a date or just to grab a quick bite/java or maybe to chill out after a hard day of work. You can find me here by myself enjoying a gelato/pizza working on my drawings or playing around on my laptop. This place inspires creativity. Support local non-chain awesome businesses in Huntsville!

This was my first stop in Huntsville, and I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I stepped foot in this place. We were greeted by the uber friendly staff, who really made the dining experience great. I had a polynesian pizza (with chicken instead of ham) that was quite tasty. Being a native New Yorker, I take pizza seriously...and this place passes the test. The coconut and chocolate gelato I had was really good too.

I was really excited about trying this place after all the great reviews, but I think I set my sights a little too high. My boyfriend and I went in on an early Saturday evening. It was pretty busy, but not to the point that we couldn't find a table inside (it was just way to humid to sit outside and be comfortable). We walked up to the counter to view the menu but took a while making up our mind. It's a pretty cramped place so while we were trying to decide what to order there was a lot of bumper cars going on with people coming and going. That really doesn't bother me so much, but I know that a lot of people hate to feel cramped into a restaurant. We ordered our pizza, grabbed a few waters (btw if you order a soda it's coming in a can) and sat at the only open table we could see. The tables are very close together because the place is so small. I had a hard time getting comfortable in the steel chairs so we moved to the couch by the door which was very nice. One thing I noticed while sitting by the door is that if your hands are full (say you're carrying 2 beers out to your friends on the patio) it's extremely difficult to open the door. My boyfriend stood and opened the door for multiple people. One woman spilled nearly half her beer just trying to get it back to her table. The pizza was pretty good (I liked it better than my boyfriend did). He said it tasted too salty. It was definitely better than a chain pizza restaurant but I doubt I'll crave it later. The gelato was just ok for me. I had the pistachio and it wasn't bad but another reviewer said it was kinda gritty and I agree. It wasn't as smooth as gelato I've had in the past. I'm sure I will try this place again, because it wasn't bad, but the food was not over the moon for me or my boyfriend and the atmosphere was loud and a little frantic.

We dine here often, preferring the Cajun and Meat Lovers stromboli's over the pizza, as the stromboli's seem to pack a more flavorful punch to the tastebuds than the somewhat bland pizza. The wing basket is good, too -- the wings appear to be fresh and not frozen with an excellent spice rub and fries. Save room for a refreshing gelato in a variety of fun flavors such as Spicy Hot Chocolate, Lime-Cilantro, or Birthday Cake. My only complaint is the always lukewarm bottled beer. I would love to see some microbrews on tap! (Or at the very least, COLD bottled beer).

A great date-night stop. The gelato is great and it has a fun, hip atmosphere. The owners are usually around helping out and available for conversation. For some reason I always feel like I'm walking onto the "Central Perk" set on "Friends". Fun!

Coffee, gelato, pizza (and beer of course!). You can find all of these at Sam and Greg's. I'm not a regular, but I've been there several times. I've had a variety of their pizza's and found them to be incredible. The atmosphere is great. The interior reflects the care and hard work that both Sam and Greg put into everything there. The menu and gelato selections also illustrates the care and creativity they put into the making of everything. It is also a great place to have a party! Yummy.

as a recent transplant from the greatest state ever, the big CO, it's been culture shock. a friend from home who also resides here told me that Sam & Gregg's has pizza that would make me think i was back home, and she was absolutely right. i loved it, loved the ambiance, loved the music playing inside and outside (it was warm enough to eat on the patio/ sidewalk), and loved the pizza (cajun, with the honeywheat crust). i expect to be spending a lot of money there, and will be having the hot chocolate gelato.

Having friends and family in Huntsville I decided to take a recommendation and give this place a try. The restaurant is quite cozy with a warming atmosphere. The gelato looked very appetizing from the looks through the glass. I ordered a small pizza and must say I was very disappointed. The crust appeared to be from a box as well as the toppings. Not very good I must say. Bland and basic. A coffee and gelato shop, absolutely. A pizza parlor, absolutely not.

Stopped here on a road trip from Omaha, NE to Enterprise, AL. A little out of the way for us but completely worth it. First the town itself is an adorable town, wish we would've planned to spend time here! Sama and Gregs was fantastic both atmosphere, service, and food. We had a big group so we had: pesto margarita pizza, Philly steak and cheese sandwhich, pepperoni pizza, Hawaiian pizza (made our own as she didn't want olives or bacon), chicken strips (kids meal), & a make your own that was Pesto, feta cheese, bacon, and chicken. All of the food was fantastic, haven't seen everyone in the group eat all of their food so quickly. We also got Gelato from them and once again, everyone got a mixture of flavors but they were delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. This is a must stop if you're in the area!

Interesting pizza place with a very artsy atmosphere. Tasty pizza we got the deluxe and that was more than enough for us to split. It was Interesting to eat pizza in a coffee shop vibe to it. Really nice local place and laid back. They also have a patio option for seating as well.

GREAT PIZZA! Was in town with the family for a lacrosse tournament and wanted to hit some of the local spots for dinner. Saw Sam & Greg's Pizza on yelp with good reviews and wanted to give it a try. We got a 12" cheese & meat lovers and an 8" buffalo chicken pizza. The family all wanted water and i tried a Blue Pants . Being from NY we are a bit of a snob about pizza. This pizza was good thin crust with good sauce and cheese. All of the meats and vegetables were really fresh. My son wanted to try the chocolate Gelato that is made fresh on the premises. We got him a small cup and he said it tasted like frozen chocolate milk and was very rich and really good. Overall, for about $35, we three had a great meal in a nice atmosphere and walked out very happy! Next time we are in town, we plan to eat here again!

Pizza is great with a small beer selection. I had the pesto margarita pizza. The pesto was very mild which is probably on purpose since it compliments the pizza well. Overall pizza was definitely good. I set outside at one of the tables on the sidewalk. Great downtown feel but without the heavy foot traffic. Parking is limited as with all downtown Huntsville. Small Pizza and a beer was about 15 dollars.

Wonderful local pizzeria with a relax vibe and good food. Pizza gets a 4/5: Sam and Gregs offers a unique variety of pizza options. I've had the pesto margarita, buffalo chicken and cajun pizza and I would recommend all 3 of them! The ingredients seem to be of a good quality, the pizza is always full of flavor and fresh. Service 4/5: the staff is always super friendly and helpful! Atmospher 4/5: a casual, relaxed and fun place downtown to hang out and grab some pizza with friends or family :)

Came here to get my niece some gelato. Horrible customer service and $4 for a baby scoop of icecream that doesn't even fill the cone... only a size of a golf ball on top of the cone... Then I Was grabbing money from my wallet and the girl at the counter rolls her eyes and walks away and comes back and huffs. Don't treat your customers this way. I will not be coming back.

I came here with a coworker since I was actually going to be passing nearby on a rare occasion. A couple of other coworkers suggested it as a place with really good pizza. Parking sucks. Somehow I lucked up on my second trip around the square to catch someone pulling out of a prime spot right in front of the restaurant. We each ordered a small pizza, one deluxe and one Polynesian, then split them both. Portions were a lot smaller than we expected for $8.50. Even though I knew it was an 8" pizza I guess I didn't consider how small it would seem. I felt kind of bad for the runners who had to call out the names as they came out of the kitchen then run around the place trying to find the orderee. Seriously people, pay attention, don't make them run by you twice before you go "Oh did you say blah blah blah, that's me..hehe". The crust was pretty good, a little chewy and a little crunchy. Had herbs lining the top that added a unique flavor. Sauce was pretty sweet and plentiful. Flavored well. The deluxe had a lot of veggies on it that overpowered the overall flavor a little. The crunchy bell peppers, overabundance of black olives, and large slices of mushroom overshadowed the pepperoni and sausage. That was an easy solution though since you can easily pick off some of the veggies. With a little adjusting the pizza was still good. I liked how the pepperoni had crispy edges. We both preferred the Polynesian which has ham, bacon, Italian sausage, and pineapple. Very good. All the flavors blended perfectly. We contemplated getting some gelato but $3.25 for what looked like a 1/4 cup size seemed a little steep, what's that a 1/2 scoop? Prices are a little high for a typical lunch. Pizza was good though. If I were on date with my hubby I wouldn't mind the prices especially if I was nearby. I'm just not sure how often I would fight for parking to come here with so many other great lunch spots in Huntsville.

I ate here for the first time this evening. Loved the pizza I ordered, but there was an extremely obnoxious customer causing a scene because she wanted to eat on the patio. She was livid that two different people were sitting at tables by themselves. Then her grandson was playing by the gelato display case. He grabbed a bowl that is used for customers, was playing with it and dropped it in the ground. Then proceeded to put it back on top of the pile that the cashier will pick up next. Also the owners child was there and was running around constantly. I watched her grab the sprinkle shaker and hide with it. Then shakes sprinkles into her mouth. Anyways the food was good but obviously the employees and owner need to pay more attention to the things that kids are getting ahold of.

This is more a pizza joint and gelato place than a cafe. The European cafe language always throws me off. There is no "comfort" seating for those who wish to linger.

I love this place! Their pizza is some of the best in Huntsville in my opinion. I usually get the standard pizza but I've tried some specialities and never been disappointed. Even the sandwiches are really good! The staff is great too as I used to be a regular when I worked on the Square.

We were in town for school orientation, and one of the Huntsville locals suggested this place. I wanted a local beer, but the staff wasn't well educated on their beers so I ended up settling for one of their draft beers. The premade pizza selection was pretty creative, and I thought there were a lot of interesting combinations. I chose the pesto margherita pizza, personal size. I think it was about 10", and roughly 4-6 slices. I felt the pizza was overpriced: $10 for a mini pizza. I enjoyed my pizza regardless.

It may have just been a mismatch between what we were looking for and what they offer - we only wanted a milkshake (we're on an epic road trip, and we are comparing milkshakes in each city where we eat dinner), and it probably is not what they're known for or even used to making. But, for the $6 it cost for 20 oz (there are five of us taste-testing each one), and being a GELATERIA I was expecting something amazing....nope. It tasted okay, but I was expecting WOW. The presentation left room for improvement too - no whipped cream, no anything....just a milkshake similar to what you would get at a mom-and-pop burger joint or even McDs. Oh well!

One of my favorite places to come with my kids! We love their gelato especially the spicy chocolate!

This pizza place is definitely one that I would visit again. We found it using Yelp as we traveled through Huntsville. The description did not disappoint as we arrived this hippie type establishment with a generous bit of outdoor seating and interestingly decorated interior. Based on the size of the crowd, its a fan favorite for locals in the area. The wait staff had a nice mix between doing their own thing and showing good customer service. They had a lot of creative menu options including gelato as part of their offering instead of just pizza. We opted for the meat specialty pizza and it was really good. We also had a nice selection of beers. As I started out, I would recommend this place to anyone and the Huntsville area looking for a good, low stress, great atmosphere pizza joint to spend an hour or so drinking and conversating.

This is a cute pizza shop! Like the thin crust pizzas. The drink selection is limited but this place is worth a try.

Update. Same problem again. Called order in for whole wheat crust just to get there to find out they're out again. Blames problem on the person who makes the crust for them, should have fired that person by now. Sounds like management problem not crust person!

Super rude staff.... only three tables occupied in the restaurant and I walk in and sit at the bar... two girls behind the bar and one guy server standing there continuing to have there conversation. .. I sat there for several minutes.. I was the only one at the bar... once I got a glance but that was it... they kept talking... several more minutes...they were literally 6 ft away from me.. got up to leave and said "well thanks" ... I was still ignored... so of course I left... and with a horrible first impression of this place.

Sam & Greg's is a cool little spot on Huntsville's square. There are a lot of good things packed into a pretty small package here, and they seem to be making it all work. The pizza options are a melding of artisan and pizzeria: sizable pies that run the gamut from basic (and inexpensive) to funky/creative (and pricey). When you find a table, don't be perplexed at the behemoth can of crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce - it's there to perch the pizza on when it comes out from the oven. A pretty clever use for a #10 can if I do say so myself. Titling itself as a "pizza and gelato" cafe seems unusual, but since both food items can be roughly traced back to an Italian descent, it really isn't that strange of a combination. The gelato half of the equation greets you from its chilled case as you walk in the door, and it is also tasty, particularly on a warm summer day walking around downtown. Espresso-based drinks are also offered from a single-pull machine behind the counter. Sam & Greg's procures its coffee from neighboring roaster Kaffeklatsch for some delicious local flair. Americanos, lattes, mocha lattes, etc. are all available, and are pretty well prepared - keep in mind that it's not a "coffeeshop" per se, and the folks at the counter are wearing multiple hats as bartenders/servers/baristas/gelato-scoopers. And, finally, Sam & Greg's does have a beer and wine selection to please most palates. There are a couple Huntsville breweries represented on tap, and there is a cooler with a spectrum of bottled beers to choose from as well.

Very allergic to tomatoes and green peppers. Came into Huntsville to meet a friend and he took us here, since he had heard good things from his co-workers. I asked for a small garden with pesto sauce instead of tomato, more artichoke instead of green pepper, and to add bacon. I would have gladly paid for the bacon and extra artichoke, but they wanted to charge to change out the sauce too. The guy working the register seemed clueless. I was starving from driving all day and a salad was not going to cut it. I had to order the Werner Von Brat that sounded and tasted gross with no veggies. The menu said the chips came with cheese, apparently that means a bag of Lays chips. No consideration of food allergies in this place! No one in our group was happy with their meals either. NOT WORTH IT.

Great pizza- shared a gluten free polynesian and a regular southwestern. Both were very enjoyable (for those non gluten frees that could eat both). Full of toppings and very tasty. Crust is different from other pizza places in town. Very tasty. Friendly staff and cool vibe. Nice outdoor seating on a nice night before the storms. Great place to enjoy a nice pie and a craft brew.

We have been wanting to try Sam and Greg's for a while but we don't eat a lot of bread, so we never end up going. We joined last Sunday night for a meal on the patio. You order inside and they bring it out to you. We shared a very affordable bottle of red. Our table outside was super unstable, such that every time you shifted, we almost lost our bottle of wine and glasses. Pizza came out quickly - we did a half and half - half of the buffalo chicken and half of the works -- crust seemed to have been previously frozen. I could BARELY tell the difference between the two halves - despite totally different flavor profiles, they were practically exactly the same tasting. This pizza just didn't do it for me. Atmosphere rocks and it is so convenient to us, but I can't imagine going back for the pizza.

I've loved this little place since in walked in. It's a cozy atmosphere and great pizza and amazing gelato. I'm a huge sucker for Italian ice cream. Also, the music is pretty chill as well. All around amazing place to eat.

Great location, pizza choices are awesome, and I tried a piece of my friend's pizza...great!!! Their gelato choices are really good too, and although pricey, excellent. $4.32 for a medium (in Como Italy, the same would have been 3euro so...Definitely would go back if you're in the mindset for a great pizza, cost no factor! Waitstaff reminded my of a Freebird World Burrito setting, but the people behind the counter were a bit "distracted"...

Best local pizza I've had here in the Huntsville area. My husband and I split the small Buffalo Chicken and Pesto Margarita pizzas and they were divine. The ratio of sauce, toppings, and cheese were perfect and the pizzas were very tasty. The night before we tried the pizza, we stopped in randomly to try the gelato after a lacking dinner elsewhere. That night we tried the pumpkin and vanilla gelato and I thought it was amazing (my husband liked the vanilla, he isn't a pumpkin fan - what a weirdo). We were so impressed with the gelato that we had to come back the next night for pizza! Of course after our pizza, we had to get more gelato so the next time we tried the birthday cake and chocolate flavors. We definitely weren't disappointed! Took away one star because it was kind of hard to find a place to sit the night we went because many tables hadn't been cleaned off.

Great food, good prices. Love the gelato treat after my meal. I've had their gyro which was surprisingly very flavorful for a non-Greek restaurant :) Also have had their pizza, which is always super fresh and flavorful. It is a great location downtown, although the Madison location is much more convenient for us. It was one of the first places I ate after moving to the area.

Great coffee, pizza, beer and gelato! Lots more stuff too. Only complaint is occasionally they're out of some items (like whole wheat crust) but everything I've had from there has been good.

Great pizza!!! Seriously some of the best pizza I have ever had. Had dinner here on a Friday night with a friend who was getting me out on the town in downtown Huntsville for the first time ever. I had no idea what to expect. I didn't expect counter service, but that was fine. I also didn't expect it to be packed after 8pm on a Friday night, which is typically after the dinner rush in most places. We got lucky though and found a table up in the loft area. So first off the good stuff; the pizza. We split a medium meat lover's. It was delicious in so many ways. The well-balanced sweetness of the dough and red sauce combined perfectly with the salty meats. The pizza might be considered over-cooked by some, but we enjoyed the crispy-ish cheese. The crust was still soft enough that it wasn't like eating a cracker. This place isn't very big, but somehow they managed to have a nice three-piece band set up, composed of violin, bass, and drums. They were jamming pretty good and provided a nice atmosphere for the diners. So, why three stars? Well first of all we ended up sitting at a dirty table all night. Since there is no wait staff, you grab a table when you find one. We were tucked back in the corner of the upstairs loft area, and I guess no one ever thought to come by and clear off the table. It was only water glasses (though one did have a balled-up napkin soaking in it, why would someone do that?) but after hanging out here for over an hour, and seeing other tables cleared off, I think it's safe to say it was bad that they missed our table. Second, I may have missed it, but I don't recall any beer on tap. Come on guys, bring in a keg of a local brew! Finally, the setup of this place is just awkward. You get your own plates and silverware but not your own glasses (presumably because then you could steal drinks from the fountain) but for my first time I was just a little confused by the whole method of getting set up in here. None of the negatives will keep me from coming back, though. The pizza and atmosphere were a pleasant surprise.

I've been here a couple of times and while its not a place I'd be ready to go to every time I get a pizza craving (that happens a lot) but I do like it if I'm in the mood for more exciting pizza. My favorite is the buffalo chicken, but I also like the southwestern. I haven't tried much else yet, but hopefully one time soon I'll be able to keep my pizza eating at bay so that I'm not too full to get some gelato. They're always changing up the flavors. I like the feel of the place, it's cozy and hip (yes I mean hip as in hipsters like mentioned in some of the other reviews, but I don't really find that to be a bad thing). The coziness can quickly turn to crowdedness though on a busy night like friday or saturday, but that's kind of expected at any of the restaurants in the area. I've always had good service, but depending on the night, the food can get to super fast or slow.

Good grief, Justin A. You hit the nail on the head with your comment about the arrogant hipsters! I was missing my authentic gelato from home, so I had to try the only gelato place in Huntsville. I read all the reviews, but boy, was I disappointed. My caveat- I didn't have the pizza, so this review is only about the gelato and the service. I came in with my friend around 9:30 on a Saturday night. The place was still hopping with people hanging out, so it's not as if we were the last ones in before they locked up. One arrogant hipster asks me what I want, and I ask to try one of the gelato flavors. He grudgingly gives me a spoonful, and when I thank him, he doesn't respond. I order a small cup of gelato, and he hands it to me and walks away! Hey, can my friend have some gelato too? So, we walk over to the register, and another cool hipster starts to ring me up, but we tell him that we really wanted to order another one, so he rings up 2. Then HE walks away. About 10 seconds later, he turns around and says 'oh yeah, what kind of gelato did you want? Really, is he high?? As for the gelato, there were only about 10 flavors, and none was very exciting or reminiscent of true Italian gelato. Where is the pistachio or the hazelnut? I do get that it's quality over quantity, but what I ordered what just average. From now on, if I have a taste for ice cream in Huntsville, it's going to be Brusters for me. I'll satisfy my gelato craving elsewhere.

So, where in Huntsville can you find a place to get away from the nerdy engineer bunch and embrace the artsy crowds? (Well, no where, really. Because we the nerdy engineers are everywhere. But if you are looking for a cool place,) Sam and Greg is the spot to be. I finally got a chance to go last Saturday, but only had enough stomach room for a small gelato, so I picked "pistachio gelato" and "passion fruit infused sweet tea" Both were great in terms of flavor. There are other interesting flavors, such as "olive & avocado", which was creamy & mild from the 1 bite sample I had. Berry gelatos looks yummy. After the friendly staff handed me the gelato, we sat towards the back of the store, and listened to a local band performing. There's even an upstairs section. Overall, the experience was very pleasant. I will definitely come back later to try the pizza.

Sam & Greg's is a really great restaurant! Cool atmosphere with delicious food. Pizza sauce has great flavor and isn't too tomatoey. I would definitely recommend Sam & Greg's to others and out of towners.

This place is awesome! One of the few places open late in downtown HSV, and they have outdoor seating so you can watch the people/cyclists/cars passing by. The hubby and I had personal pizzas and gelato coupled with a beer and were able to read the "Valley Planet" (a local newsie like The Loaf in ATL). Also, we were able to people-watch at an outdoor table while dining. OH, ATL/Decatur how I miss you, but I have finally found a place like you! I got the Polynesian (ham, bacon, pineapple, black olives) and he got the Buffalo (chicken, ranch dressing, onion, and green bell) and both were quite good. For dessert we got the Ginger and Black Pepper gelato, and all were awesome. We will definitely be back! Oh, and I noticed they have a "Barat-O-Bama" that I MUST try next time. :)
