Hungry and sleepy from being on the road since 2:30 am Saturday morning with only a quick stop at McDonald's for breakfast. Driving through Huntsville and checking my handy dandy Yelp app for local grub. We were considering either the 88 Chinese buffet or the Nothing but Noodles. Then we saw Phil Sandoval's. Checked the reviews and it sounded okay. Got out of the car to go to Nothing but Noodles and decided to see if the menu was posted outside at Phil's, smelled great so went in. So happy we did. Ate outside on the patio. The fresh, hot, made from scratch chips were awesome and the fresh salsa was even better. I got the San Miguel. Two chicken enchiladas, one chicken tamale and one crispy chicken taco. I could only finish one enchilada and the tamale. Filled up on the awesome chips and salsa. My man got the Tampico. One large chicken burrito and a crispy chicken taco. He could only finish the taco and about half of the burrito. I got a Stella and he got a Yuengling. Finished the beers while still eating the chips and salsa. Then our very nice and friendly server brought us some free ice cream for dessert. That was the perfect way to end the meal. We will be back.

Just had lunch and were pleasantly surprised. Service was super quick, food was hot, fresh and delicious. The food was served quickly, was hot and delicious.

Not bad. Nicely decorated, decent Mexican food. Thankfully it was Phil (he's from Texas. Texans actually know what Mexican food is!) who opened this establishment and not some amateur. The only thing I didn't like is that it was PACKED and the cheese for the nachos was white and didn't taste all that great.

  • Bella W.

Food was good but not amazing. Drinks are decent priced. This was much better than other mexican food we tried in the area. Service was good and very fast. Even though it was packed we still only waited 10 minutes for a table.

Me and my parents went here to eat when i went to visit them for the Thanksgiving holidays. I love mexican food and i know good mexican food when i eat it. I did not eat good mexican food at Phil Sandovals. First off i was not real keen on the chips. They were to thin and light and the salsa was not that flavorful either. I got the mexican city platter and while it was alot of food it was just mediocore in taste and just blah. I didnt like their chili relanoe (sp???) one bit. It had a sweetness to it that did not appeal to me. They put raisins in it and i've never had that dish with raisins before. A very disappointing night out.

Went to this restaurant and was amazed at how good the food was. We sampled a variety of entrees and all of them were delicious. Also try the Mango Margarita because they are really good!! Great service and friendly people plus the (free) soft serve vanilla ice cream at the end of the meal is great!!

I recommend the fish taco, best in Huntsville. People love the mango margarita, I don't care for them but they'll get the job done. Food is quick, service passable.

They have my favorite chips and salsa in town. The food is decent and the margaritas are really good, but way overpriced!

I enjoyed a very nice Halloween dinner at Sandoval's The place had been recommended by friends and I gave it a try on what was a moderately busy night at the restaurant. The welcome was warm and energetic. Once at my table I was quickly served tasty, fresh chips (seemed lighter than most I've had) accompanied by a salsa of nice texture, appearance and taste...not too spicy and likely ideal for a wide range of diners (including me!). My Fajita Salad (chicken) arrived in an incredibly short time. It was obvious the dish was carefully created (and well executed by the kitchen) as the balance of colors, textures and chilled bowl were well conceived. My server (Daniel) was friendly and polite but didn't check on my order or refresh my drink for more than 15 minutes after the dish arrived. As I was dining alone and had no issues with the food it was no big deal. Plus, his energy, attitude and friendly personality was appreciated. Overall the restaurant was clean, well decorated and the staff was well organized while moving around in an orderly fashion. I'll definitely return while recommending to others!

4-1/2 out of 5 stars :-). Located where the very first Rosie's Mexican Cantina used to be in Huntsville, and still somewhat affiliated with Rosie's (or so I've heard), Phil Sandoval's Mexican Restaurante is every bit as excellent. Many of the food entrees are similar, and yet there is enough of a difference where you may very well choose Phil Sandoval's over Rosie's. The green rice and blackbeans are a nice touch that differentiate it from Rosie's. The ambiance is also very nice. We've gone twice, were very pleased, and would happily go again.

Good food and good portions. Always tastes super fresh because they make it fresh. The guacamole is the best I've had at any restaurant. The fish taco is really great! I order it every time I'm here. You can order it grilled or fried. I tried both, of course, and I prefer the fried. It's lightly breaded with a hint of spice and that adds more flavor. When combined with all of the side items, it's simply awesome. If having it for the first time, order the mixed to have one of each and see for yourself. Their steak fajita is really great - extremely flavorful, tender, and juicy. The key thing is that it's been consistently so. I disagree that this is the best restaurant in Huntsville. Huntsville has some pretty amazing restaurants so even tho this is not the best, it is very very good. They always start you off with a basket of chips and salsa and end your dinner with a free ice cream. Even though they're both free, they're really good.

Brought my employees here for a makeshift Christmas party last Friday night. Everyone was happy with their meals, and the staff were very accommodating to our party of 12. I got a shrimp quesadilla and asked for chicken added to it. I got my quesadilla and a plate of grilled chicken. I thought that was pretty odd, but whatever. The guy sitting next to me got white shrimp fajitas. I don't like fajitas in general because I didn't come to a restaurant to assemble my own food, which brings me back to my issue with my grilled chicken on the side, but I digress. The "white" part of the shrimp fajitas was a cheese sauce. It looked more like a cheese soup with 5 shrimp in it. Another issue I have is restaurants serving shrimp with the tails still on them. It's a pet peeve of mine. But that wasn't my meal and my quesadilla was really good. Modelo on draft was good and everyone seemed to like their margaritas or whatever they got. It was my first time here, and I'll definitely be back.

Good location. Plenty sitting indoors and outdoors. Fast and attentive service. Food was tasty and good portions. The beef quesadillas were pretty good. Guacamole also was very tasty. Overall I'm satisfy with this restaurant. I will come back in the future.

My fiancé and I love Mexican so lately almost every time we go back home we eat here. We love the chips, salsa, and queso dip. Then after chips and dip we always get their enchiladas. To me Phils and Rosies (same owner) are the best Mexican places I have ever eaten at. Unless I don't know what good Mexican is, they are pretty dang good. I have tried numerous Mexican places all over in other states and I always compare to Phils or Rosie's and to me nothing compares.

heard about Sandovals for years from friends and tried it a few years back...EXCELLENT ! We love the food, service and everything about the place ! The BEST thing is it doesn't taste like all the other Mexican food [seems like one is just like the other down the street as to flavor] so its great food with a taste of different flavor...we tried Rosie's and it was good, on two occasions but didn't add up to Sandovals [maybe a 7 of 10] , the first time they were out of a lot of selections and the second some of the food was COLD. We have never had a bad meal at Sandovals so we will continue our drive from Hartselle to Huntsville to enjoy !!!

I didn't know what to expect when we chose Phil Sandoval for Mexican food. I will have to say that Fajitas were great and surpassed my expectations. The atmosphere was fun and the waitress was engaged in making our experience the best it could be. I am in town on business and will eat at Phil's again if I visit huntsville in the future. I would say this is a place to go if you are looking for a great Mexican meal in the huntsville area.

Good, decent Tex-Mex, good service, nice restaurant...nothing spectacular about it, but will definitely do when you crave an enchilada or fajita :-)

The taco salad is served with tortilla strips instead of a fried shell. Lazy. Also, it was so unseasoned that I had to add salt and pepper. On top of that, the ceramic bowl it was served in was full of water at the bottom? Eek. The beans were gross. Did I mention the olives? Yes, OLIVES in a taco salad. Voted best Margarita in HSV per the Times, but I can't see why. The saving grace of my visit was the bartender, Tom, who was so efficient and nice that it made the visit tolerable. Sorry Phil, I won't be back.

Get the fish tacos. They are consistently great! Small flour tortillas wrapped around lightly breaded, steaming hot fish (tilapia? I'm not sure) bites, with a side of pickled slaw. There's a cream sauce too. I think you get 2 at lunch. The rice and beans are nothing to write home about so I usually skip those. Service at the bar is typically quick and attentive and they have at least 1 TV so you don't miss any game you are interested in. Give Phil's a try. Even if fish tacos sound weird to you, you've got to try them, they are YUMMY - consistently yummy!!!!

Honestly, I don't see the difference between Phil and Rosie's. We prefer Phil just because they're not "chain" like Rosie's around HSV. They have same menu, decor and everything else. I love their mambo taxi. Oh apparently you rim it w/ sugar instead of salt on this one. I didn't know. I'm Asian! lol. I like their fish tacos & quesadella. Not very impress with the beef fajitas but it's because I had the best back in TX :) Anyways, it's a good and decent Mex place. This is our first choice when it comes to Mex.

What can I say other than Phil Sandoval's delivers what most come to expect from turn style Mexican joints. Honestly the wife prefers Rosies, and if I had a choice I pic Phil's. I like how there chips are the lighter flakier type, and there salsa is the kind I prefer; being tomato based with actual onion, pepper, and cilantro. Rosies salsa always taste like ketchup to me and I hate joints that do that to there salsa. Otherwise I can't rave review Phil's outside of the fact that services is prompt, it's hybrid Mexican (not authentic) but good, quick service, and good tasting. Great for a casual evening, or quick lunch. Prices are comparable to other hybrid Mexican places in town (Namely Rosies). I frequent maybe once a month. It's good enough to keep me coming back, mainly out of convince, but not necessarily the type of place I salivate for frequently.

Great atmosphere, okay Beer selection, fast service. Having said that, I will say that the beef salad was just okay. I do not suggest getting that. The chips and cheese sauce were great. Will post more as I will eat here again.

I visited this restaurant on a very busy Saturday night. The service was quick and friendly. I had their beef, cheese and pork enchiladas. They were all very good, but the cheese and pork were the best. Also the food stayed very warm throughout which is an indicator that they have not succumbed to using microwaves to heat/warm/cook their food like some restaurants. Another thing I enjoyed was the salsa they served with the chips. It had a slight sweetness to it that was interesting and pleasant.

I prefer this over Rosie's......never had a bad meal but Mexican food is cheap to make and I just feel they could give you more for your money.......chips and salsa while waiting are excellent.

Great food. I went with a group and the managment staff was very accomodating. They made sure there was plenty of seating and even gave us complimentary appetizers. The service was fast and the food was awesome.

I had my first meal at Phil Sandoval's and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Guacamole is delicious, lots of cilantro just like I like it! I had the chimichanga plate and had some to bring home for dinner tomorrow evening. My chimichangas were good as was the rice. My hubs got the green rice(spinach) and it was very tasty as well. Complimentary ice cream at the end of the meal is a treat. Service was great and atmosphere is nice too!

I've only ever eaten here during lunch. The prices aren't bad, but the lunch menu is a little small. I stay pretty safe and get the quesadillas most times. They seem a little on the greasy side (compared to Rosie's across the street). The service is decent but sometimes the waiters seem a little flustered when they're busy so it may take a while to get your checks at the end. I love the free ice cream at the end of the meal, it's a nice touch and it is appreciated. As far as the decor, it's pretty basic Mexican restaurant decor, nothing too crazy. The wait staff all wears white dress shirts with brightly colored solid ties (which I think looks very nice and also fun). Overall it's not a bad meal or dining experience, but Rosie's is definitely still better.

Great Mexican food, better than what used to be in their location and that is Rosies. There are Mexican restaurants all over Huntsville but this place is different in that their menu has not just the typical Mexican food but some different items and everthing is well prepared and fresh. It's a little more pricy than most but you get what you pay for also you get free ice cream after your meal. Nice environment too and great service.

    (4)
  • Patrick M.

Personally, Rosies is better. Maybe it's just my own taste, but I think their food lacks that extra special tastiness that I have come to expect from a Mexican place. I'm not saying its bad. You won't waste your money or time, but there is much better fare in HSV.

Pretty decent Mexican food! I went with a group of women while I was in town for a training. We all ordered margaritas and then some other fun frozen drinks. All drinks were delicious! The only down side to the drinks was that they don't offer pitchers. That's like a staple for a Mexican restaurant! I ordered the fish tacos. They were pretty good. The fish was fried and I prefer my fish tacos to be grilled or baked but the were still pretty good. They side dishes that come with the fish tacos really make them. You get this great coleslaw with a tangy onion sauce to it. Putting it all together with the tacos is really good. All in all a good meal. Everyone else I was with enjoyed their meals too.

this place is great for fast service! we literally are in and out within 30 minutes every time.. cant say the same for any other dine in restaurants! also Phil is a very nice guy. I got to meet him the other day. Thats an owner who has passion for his restaurant.

Not being a Rosie's fan (Margaritas taste artificial & salsa is runny) ... I can only say this is by far the best Mexican food in Huntsville. The outdoor dining is perfect almost all year. Mango Margaritas are refreshing . Fish Tacos are the best ever and the service is just sweet!

  • Brooke T.

The Best Chicken Fajitas!!!! and to top them off, the Mexican butter that you can drizzle over the top....yummmmm! but make sure you order a Mambo Taxi on the Rocks to go with it! this delicious drink is a perfect mix between a Margarita and Sangria!

This evening my husband picked up a to-go order. Everything was there except the chips that usually come with the meal. This was a huge disappointment as we purchased extra salsa & guacamole and also every time we have ordered to-go there is always something missing. The worst part of it all- my husband called to speak to a manager, since including everything seems to be a problem for them, and the "manager" that he spoke to basically called him a liar. There was no apology. And he offered for us to go all the way back there for the chips- an unreasonable, skimpy offer from one of our favorite places. Alas, our love affair with Phil Sandoval has come to a pathetic end. They get one measly star because poor service ruins a good meal.

Liked it. It's not traditional Mexican food, but it's great. I had the triple tostada and it was good...not covered in sauce and very clean. Good atmosphere and the free ice cream is a great way to end the meal.

The chips and salsa are pretty good. The food, which is far from authentic, is somewhere between mediocre and good. They sometimes give you free ice cream, so that's good. The servers are usually pretty nice too.

I'm from San Diego and travel the US. I've been let down by Mexican restaurants out of CA so many times I stopped trying. Co-worker could not decide where to go so we settled on this place. Great decision! Chips are great. Salsa is very good. Our meal a liitle longer to get and they comp'd some queso (a runny cheese sauce, I was ok). I got the "Mexican" it was good but it and the enchalada has ground beef (yuk) which is a pet peive of mine. Never had to wait for a drink refill! Overall a good place being so far from the border.

  • Krissy R.

Surprisingly delicioso! The food was fresh and the quantities were abundant. Chips weren't too salty and were crispy, but not greasy. The salsa was fresh and tortillas are made on-site. The prices are right and the service was wonderful. I will be back!

My wife and I have lived all over the country and love Mexican food. Phil Sandavol's is Tex Mex and is wonderful. I have eaten at most of the Mexican restaurants in Huntsville including Rosie's and I prefer Phil Sandavol's hands down. It is a downright pleasure to eat there. The food melts in your mouth. The ice cream at the end is a nice touch. The service is extremely fast. Every time we have done we have averaged around 3-4 minutes from the time the order is taken to it being delivered to our table. I don't know how they do it but they have done it every time we have gone there for lunch or dinner weekday or weekend. Keep up the great work Phil!

Not impressed. Came here for dinner and my enchiladas came out with no sauce on them. NO SAUCE ON ENCHILADAS?! whattttt?! Enchilada sauce is the crowning glory of the enchilada eating experience! Also, the beans were runny and the rice not well-seasoned. I'd come here only if I was desperately craving the nachos my co worker got, which were punchy and delicious.

When Rosie's moved up the road to their new swanky location, the decided to do something a little different with the old location. They've turned it into Phil Sandoval's and I have to say, it was an EXCELLENT idea. We managed to catch them on the first night they were open to the public and everything was absolutely wonderful. The servers worked really well together to make sure that we were given the best possible service. The food was incredible, I had the Pollo con Mole and my dining companions had the shrimp enchiladas and the Chile Rellano (with beef). Everyone enjoyed their meal immensely. Two thumbs up for the Mango Margaritas and the Coconut Flan. I definitely need to get back and try the Chicken Tamales. What are you still waiting for? Get over there and check them out. Ask to sit in Kathleen's section. She's one of the sweetest, most enthusiastic, attentive servers I've ever met. Take Out will be available soon.

We just moved here from the California where over half of the population was Mexican so I know good mexican food and this was definately not even close. Actually it was gross. The rice was mushy, the beans runny, and the enchiladas tasted like they had some canned cheese in the middle with hardly any sauce. Everything had a ton of onions in it too and not little ones, but big ones. Crazy. Funny thing was as I was ordering for the first time the guy that worked there even admitted they don't know authentic good Mexican food and suggested another place here in town called Chips and Salsa which I am anxious to try out. I do have to admit the only thing they had going for them was the chips and salsa and their crunchy ice-ha. Please don't waste your money if you are looking for "real" mexican food. I am beginning to think we may never find a place and also thinking they will also have no good Chinese places here either- sniff.

The food is always great. Hot, pretty quick and we've never had a bad batch of anything (like slightly stale chips). We have eaten at Phil's more than 2-3 dozen times. While I generally dine with just my wife, we've had multiple groups of over 12 people and a party of over 40. Service was outstanding for all of them. I've never even heard of a complaint about Phil's. We agree with other reviewers that the Fish Taco's are awesome!

All the hype had me wanting to come here. I hear Phil on the radio nearly everyday talking about their delicious food and homemade tortillas. I came for lunch and the place was packed but huge so no wait. The parking lot is quite busy since it is shared with 3 other neighboring restaurants in a busy shopping mall. I ordered the shredded pork burrito with the expectations that this would be the bomb diggity lunch of the century since it incorporated some of my favorite Mexican ingredients...pork, salsa verde, and black beans. I was highly disappointed. Everything about the burrito was so bland. I found myself trying to scrape up every bit of salsa verde to find some flavor but even it didn't provide any. I can say that the pork was tender and juicy. The black beans had a very strong smoke flavor, almost like smoked bacon. And the "green rice" was also flavorless. I couldn't believe these ingredients failed as miserably as they did. The plus is the complimentary vanilla ice cream after your meal. The serve definitely didn't hover but was available when needed. With all of the other places there are to eat in the area I'm not sure I'll be returning anytime soon.

Writing this as I'm nibbling at my leftovers. So I guess I can say their portions are of a decent size, though not huge. I've definitely received larger burritos. It's the quality that's a problem. The ingredients they use at this place just make no sense, end of story. They seem to be using parboiled rice, which is the only explanation I can come up with for why their rice tastes kind of like jambalaya. Not that I don't enjoy jambalaya, it just doesn't belong on my plate at a "Mexican" restaurant. This is honestly the most American Mexican I've ever had. Okay, so I got the shredded pork burrito, which I thought would be awesome because it contains shredded pork (which is normally well seasoned in Mexican fare), and salsa verde, two of my favorite things. Their verde is just mild spice, no flavor. I was expecting tomatillo and found none. No cilantro, no flavor, nothing. The pork inside the burrito is more like American barbecue pulled pork. It has no seasoning on it. I find this highly suspicious since Ted's barbecue moved in next door. The black beans on the side are okay mixed with the green rice. Alone, they're somehow flavorless. The salsa at the table doesn't really taste like salsa, it's just like fire roasted tomatoes and very sweet. No spice whatsoever. I mean it's good, but it doesn't taste like salsa, so I was thoroughly confused. THE QUESO IS THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT. How do you fuck up queso blanco, I don't even know. It tastes like garlic bread, or garlic butter or something. I don't even know. The chips are thin and crispy, I enjoyed them. But when we had some salsa and queso left to take home with us, they charged us $.75 for a bag of chips (they never refilled our basket during our meal). The only reason I would return is for the chicken chimichangas my boyfriend got, which I must say were pretty fantastic. Still, I don't know if that will be enough, the whole experience was pretty disappointing and cost way more than it was worth.

We have eaten here a couple of times and we find it to be good. I wouldn't say great, but a good meal. The warm fresh chips and salsa are my favorite part of the meal. The chips are so fresh, thin and crispy. The burrito and enchiladas were good. They are served with rice and beans. After dinner you get free vanilla soft serve ice cream! It's convenient for us so we will go back when we want mexican food!

Went on a Wednesday for an early lunch and the place was already packed. Only had a ten minute wait. Nice atmosphere, simple menu, and polite staff. Ordered from the lunch menu and the service was fast. Food had a good taste but came without the side items that you normally get like sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes and lettuce. Complementary chips and salsa were warm and tasty.

I cannot understand the 4 stars on this place. The food is very bland and over priced. Margaritas hardly contain any alcohol. There are better Mexican places for much better prices.

Good Mexican restaurant good food great drinks. The service was good the food was quick to arrive after ordering. The waiter on the other hand was quite slow or refilling drinks and checking back with us, delivering the check and so on. I have been told that Phil's is better than Rosie's across the road but I have to disagree. I would come back here only if Rosie's packed. These two restaurants are extremely close in menu choices and taste honestly you can't go wrong with either one. just the service is better at Rosie's, but I could have had the slowest one there.

I absolutely love the poblano soup was the best thing to eat especially in cold weather The enchiladas and the tacos al carbon were amazing especially when I got the vegan rice instead of the red rice Food is awesome Owners are awesome managers are awesome I always like to come early like 2-4 when there's hardly any people and its more relaxed The queso blanco is amazing

Phil's is my favorite Mexican that I have found here in HSV. I love authentic,, but I really just want real flavor. Phil's nails it. Great lunch menu, which is when I typically get to go there. My favorite is the chicken burrito, but the chicken quesadilla is a close second. My only request is that they add the chimichanga to the lunch menu. Phil's also provides a little happy bonus : FREE ice cream, perfect soft serve that just hits the spot after a delicious meal! Big negative is parking, if you don't get there early, you can hang it up for getting near the building.

The chicken enchiladas were good but the salsa and cheese dip were bland. Not my favorite.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla.
