This place is a must when visiting Lake Guntersville. The restaurant sits on the lake and has awesome views - ask for a lake view booth when you get there. My companion and I shared the huge seafood platter. We substituted the crawfish for the crab meat and it was worth the upcharge. What's great about the restaurant is the opening cornbread, slaw and pickled onions. Yumminess!! I also recommend the greens to add to your meal.

Great atmosphere and service. Food is good, but not Five star quality. The fried seafood was a bit over cooked and seemed frozen rather than fresh. My friends felt the same about their seafood fare, but said the ribeye was really good. The draw of this restaurant is the lake view atmosphere. Definitely worth at least one trip.

The Catfish was ok, not great. The Gulf shrimp was frozen and small. The Onion rings while tasting good were gargantuan in size (they cut a Hugh onion in half and fried the sections) and did not come with dipping sauce. The corn bread and coleslaw were good. They did not serve real butter with the corn bread or baked potato. We are from the Gulf of Mexico ( Pensacola) and are used to fresh seafood. Not fresh here. For the price, we were expecting better.

Service: Excellent, accommodating View: Breathtaking sunset from lakefront window booth Food: Deeelicious and filling (so expect to take home leftovers) Attire: Surprisingly casual (then again, it's quite casual here in the south)

Visited Top of The River for the first time with family and I had the catfish dinner with a baked Potatoe , 3 pieces of fish and hush puppies. To start we had the turnips greens & cole slaw with pickled onions and corn bread. Just delicious!

I came to this place to celebrate my parents 80th birthday and boy do we ever regret coming to this place. It was the absolute worse and I for one will never return. Unfortunately on the afternoon we came, the lights in the restaurant went out. Now one would expect a business to have a generator for such occasions, but NO not this low rated restaurant. So the lights were out and yet the wait staff still brought out the food, now a couple of people in our party ordered the whole catfish complete with bones. Of course they could not eat this meal in the dark. The management was no where to be found and the wait staff would offer no solutions. There were people trying to eat by using their cell phones for lights. It was completely insane. I will end by saying the management was completely rude and handled the situation very badly. Jeff the manager was a complete jerk and has no idea of the concept of customer service.

The view from this restaurant is spectacular I highly recommend the sunset. The food isn't bad but there really isn't that much of a selection. You basically get the same sides with all the meals.

My boyfriend & I had dinner here Friday night. We went around 830, so it wasn't too busy. We were greeted with smiles, & promptly taken to a booth by a window overlooking the lake. Breathtaking view! For an appetizer, we got the pickles & rings combo. It was ginormous & delicious. For dinner, we both had the river boat special: 1/2 lb catfish with a side. Pretty good! Our server, Lacy, was the sweetest thing ever. She got us everything we asked for and more.

We love this place, and eat here every time we're in town. The cornbread, slaw and pickled onions are excellent.

The chicken was is really good here our server Brianna is awesome. I am not a seafood lover but my dad and sister love the riverboat meal and said the catfish is really good. You get a lot of food for a great price. I will be back.

We always come here when we're in the area... They have the best catfish I have ever eaten. All their dishes are excellent, even the chicken (my wife doesn't like seafood or fish). We love boating up to here, and tying off. No matter how many friends we bring over, they always get us seated quickly, and are always friendly and professional.

I've been here once and another outlet once. Both places were packed and I wonder why? The food isn't that fantastic. I had the combo of fried catfish fillet and broiled crawfish tail. The catfish fillet was salty. The crawfish tail was drowning in garlic butter and that was all I could taste.

The view is great the place is large and service efficient. Prices are reasonable and everything was okay. The cole slaw was some of the best I have ever had along with the pickled onions. Hush puppy's were average but okay as well. The corn bread is a jalapeno one which has never been a favorite of mine even though I am from Texas - jalapenos in my opinion belong on the side not in bread so I did not eat that. Now for the catfish and shrimp - I am pretty sure the shrimp is frozen prepackaged and then fried - it was okay but on combo platter I got 5 medium shrimp and they once again were okay. The fish - I like mine cornmeal based and crispy - while this seemed limp and probably a bit flour and cornmeal mix or warmed up maybe I am not sure .maybe a heat lamp Not crispy at all which is how it should be. Drinks are in large cups and refilled often so server and view were the best part. Would I go back no - not bad, not good. Just okay - kind of meh!

I have eaten here twice to many. Still SALT and GREASE food. The illusion of looking out the window at the beautiful view of the water that makes the seafood tastes better obviously works with a lot of people.Being from a coastal city, I have a general rule if the restaurant seems to be too far from the ocean or gulf, stick with land animals to eat !! You will never be disappointed. As long as this restaurant keeps packing them in and training there taste buds for the substandard taste of seafood you can expect the quality to continue to drop.

I've eaten a lot of fried food and catfish in the south and this place is average. The fryers are heavy handed and the pickles and shrimp were way too greasy. There is an art to frying...and they don't quite have it in my opinion. Catfish was ok. Hush puppies were good!

Food coma. huge servings. This was a decent time for some irish road trippers that had already eaten much of the south. Hush puppies were good fried onions too.

I've been here a couple of times. For whatever reason this place gets jam packed all the time. That isn't to say I didn't like it, but I'm not really sure why it is such a hot place. For us, the view has more to do with it than the food. I always get the fried catfish because I just don't get it very often back here in Seattle. What you get is pretty standard catfish though, maybe even less than most places. Really, I feel like you could get close to this catfish from a frozen box. You can't get the other stuff though (slaw, pickled onions, cornbread, hushpuppies). It's greasy stuff and theres a ton of it, but that's what you came for, right? The catfish I had was advertised as the Riverboat Special as I recall. I asked the waiter what was special about it vs. the bone-in version of the catfish that was not listed as a special (but was the same price). He said that it was the "special" because that is what most people order but that there wasn't any other difference. OK, major peeve here. Baked potatoes are one of the standard sides. I asked that mine come "loaded". To which the waiter replies that "loaded" means butter and sour cream here. "No bacon," I reply? Waiter confirms that they used to offer the fake bacon, but that they had lots of complaints. So instead of the alternative of offering REAL bacon, now they offer NO bacon?! OK, I'm over it. Ate my potato with butter and sour cream that I had to dig and squeeze out of the supplied single serve packaged containers. The beer selection is pretty basic. They have stuff like Bud Light and Coors. Don't think they have anything approaching a "craft" beer. We also had a pitcher of margaritas, so they must have a regular bar. Staff has always been pretty attentive when I've gone. They have an army of servers to feed the army of people that show up. Great for groups if you make reservations. The place itself is pretty rustic and has some nice qualities. Has a great view of Guntersville Lake. Lots of opportunities for photos with great backgrounds and sunsets. Lots of interesting photos around the restaurant. I wish I had a book of them along with captions and the story behind them. It's a pretty casual place. I mean, you eat off pie pans.

In my opinion, their slaw is the best! My father loved the pickled onions. And we all adore the fried pickles! If you're not a seafood fan like me, the chicken fingers are pretty awesome.

After having a bad day (again) with the local Pizza Hut, now for something positive. We were just in here two weeks ago and as usual this place rocks! Always great food, great staff, and awesome scenery. Wish most of the other restaurants in G'ville tried as hard as these people do. As usual, we will be back again and again!!

If u came to this place and had to make a long drive, I guess u talk yourself into it actually being good.. Other than the turnip greens, cornbread and pickled onion this place is ok at best. Most everything is fried and greasy and the crab meat is fake to.. Do yourself a favor a look up Craw Mamas. It's just around the corner and blows this place out of the water for sure.. Hard to sell bagged previously frozen seafood and make it taste fresh..

I come to top o river about 5 times a year from huntsville. The place is Great and I love the food!! I was reading Janie H. review and it sounds like they where not happy with the rules. Every place has to have Rules or it will not flow correctly. I waited table while in engineering schools. I'm glad that i'm not waiting table anymore but i do understand why they have there sit down rules. Overall top o river is great. I plan on having my wedding reception there because its so amazing.

I had been here a few times. The food was not bad. The atmosphere was neato. Then one day when I was passing through town I had a hankering for some catfish. Had my greens and cornbread and then moved to the catfish, when I saw the unwanted side item staring at me. It was short, dark, and curly. Now this could have been from the head of some curly-haired fry-cook, but I'm pretty sure it was in fact, a PUBE. That's all it will ever be to me. I told my server and he asked if I wanted a new platter. I told him I wasn't interested and didn't really want to eat anymore. (keep in mind that I never ever complain about food, let alone turn down food that is offered to me.) The kid went to ask his manager what to do and when he came back he said they were going to take $2.00 off my check. HA! 2 bucks. If you care about repeat business you should freaking comp that whole meal man. I can excuse the hair. That's not a huge deal. The huge deal is the $2 offer. Garbage. I only hope other yelpers will see this and decide not to eat there on their way through town.

We're new in town and like to explore the area on weekends. When we said "Guntersville", two different people said "Top o' the River". The 45-minute drive from Huntsville is worth it to see the beautiful lake, but this restaurant alone is worth the trip. We arrived just a few minutes after opening time at 5:00 PM on a Friday and were lucky to get the last window booth. There is a waiting area big enough to serve as a small train station. The appetizers - fried pickles and greens - were excellent and way too much. The cornbread came fresh out of the oven, the cole slaw was light and delicious, and the pickled onions were, well, pickled onions. I had grilled catfish (why else would you come here?) and fried gulf shrimp combo, and it was amazing. Well-seasooned, a little spicy, and tender moist. My wife had the grilled chicken/grilled shrimp kabobs combo and enjoyed those. Why not five stars? Only because our waitress was friendly and attentive, but before long became too friendly and attentive. The appetizers came very quickly, and the main courses were on time, but the waitress checked on us about every 2 1/2 minutes, which became annoying. We were trying to relax and have a conversation when she asked us if we needed to-go boxes, and brought those with the check way before we were ready. We sat in spite of her hurrying us, but we saw a few tables that were seated after us who were packed up and gone. ToTR does a huge business, and turnover is apparently a prime concern. We'll go back because the food (and the view) is great, but we'll use some time management techniques of our own to keep from being hurried.

This place is all about the catfish and sea food. If you don't eat fish, there aren't a lot of options. They have chicken tenders (grilled or fried) or Rib Eye Steak. When you are first seated, the server brings empty pie pans for each person, a small skillet of cornbread, a big cup on coleslaw, and a bowl of pickled onions. (Cornbread is average, didn't try the onions, and the coleslaw is tasty... and I don't even like coleslaw most of the time) Meals are served with your choice of fries or baked potato. Portions are HUGE. We ordered the small fried pickles appetizer and it was plenty for 3 or 4 people. (We shared the small side of greens as well and I managed to take home leftovers) I ended up with the fried chicken fingers and they were wonderful; the leftovers were great too. We went on Mothers Day and it was insanely busy. They were well prepared for the onslaught and the food came out quickly All in all this is a great place to eat, but even more so if you actually enjoy sea food. FYI - No Sunday alcohol sales.
