Ordered three pizzas for my daughters birthday and they were flat out perfect and beautiful. They were also very accommodating with regards to special requests. I will definitely be back for more.

Best pizza in Alabama!!! We had a large Better Boy!! It was great and left all five of us stuffed!! The crawfish were great too!! Friendly staff.

Everything tastes great. Long waits during peak times....highly recommend calling in order about 30-40 minutes before arrival. Can't beat the atmosphere of you like "hole in the wall" finds with great food.

Arguably the best pizza in the area. We have eaten here many times and it's always been great. Great toppings with a nice thick crust. Do yourself a solid and eat here soon!

A really decent choice for pizza in Gadsden. It's been around forever and I've never had a bad experience. One of my favorites is the spaghetti pizza, which comes with, if you believe it, spaghetti on top. One thing you should know is that these pizzas are really heavy. They pride themselves on building giant ones. Overall, for the food and atmosphere, Mater's is a good value.

Very tasty mushroom and artichoke heart calzone, and massive. Crust was different in that it had a garlic Parmesan glaze but it was really good as I enjoy garlic. It may be a bit much if you don't. Cooked perfectly. Fresh ingredients or at least the mushrooms were. I only give it four stars because I wasn't a fan of the pizza sauce that came with it. (Overly spiced IMO) but they also offer a marinara which I'll be sure to try next time. Highly recommended.

One of the best pizza places there is. Been in town for as long as I am old. The Better Boy pizza is awesome as always. The oysters rock! And toward the end of the week, check out Alicia's Cajun fare...Gumbo, White Chocolate Bread pudding, Jambalaya....She's a wonderful waitress & one heck of a Nawlin's girl. Anyways....it's really good stuff no matter what you eat there.

Great pizza with a small town feel. Locals love this place! Pizza was excellent and staff was very helpful when we had to move tables because a few more friends showed up. A+

Pizza just doesn't get any better. Yes, that is a huge statement, but their pizza is just that good. The location is rustic and quaint, with the B&W photos, old mule harness and a rather cool arrowhead collection. It is WAY out of my way, but I was passing thru and treated myself. If you are in the area and hungry for a 1 1/2- 2 inch pizza, this is where you have to go. OH, and when I checked Yelp! before going, it was reported to be closed at 11:00 on Saturday, it was either really not closed, or they opened so this world class reviewer could eat and give them 5 stars... I wish people would do a bit of fact checking before they report hours. Maybe even not order a calzone when they actually don't even like them... I'm just sayin'.

Great sandwiches, lasagna and the pizza... It's just fantastic. Almost glad it's a drive to get here, as this area of Gadsden would pack the pounds on me.

I always get their pizza to-go, so I can't speak to the 'cramped atmosphere' review buuut some of the best pizza with the most generous toppings you'll find. Do not--I repeat do not--get extra cheese unless you rreeeeaaallly want a lot. Like I said they're generous, so their base amount of cheese is way more than that of other pizza shops. The crust is my favorite though-- it has that chicago pan-made taste to it.

I have eaten at Maters many times over the years and I can honestly say it is one of the most consistent restaurants I have ever frequented. The pizza is excellent every time. As is the spaghetti and lasagna. The staff is excellent and friendly. Great service without being overbearing. One of their better menu items and one of the most unique is the spaghetti pizza. I have never seen it at another pizza joint and probably never will, but it's worth a try I promise. Drive up one day. It's only about an hour away from the 'Ham and worth the ride.

Being a pizza snob from Chicago, I have to put in my two cents: this place rocks! It's no Lou Malnati's, I thoroughly enjoyed all the zza and the 4 dozen oysters as well!

Stopped off in Gadsden for dinner on a trip and wanted some pasta. This place was perfect. Reasonable prices with decent food. They had wine and beer, including a couple imports (all bottled). The speghetti was tasty but the meatballs stole the show, with it's robust earthy flavor. The calzone was big, but it's size being it's only redeeming quality - often I feel calzones have too much bread and are dry, this one was no exception. Overall, Mater's was a perfect roadside stop on our way through Gadsden.

I decided to stop at Mater's for dinner with Girlfriend. She had told me about it and I read the reviews here on Yelp! Great pizza and pasta? Definitely something I wanted to try. We showed up on a Saturday night and there were several people milling about outside. We were prepared for a wait, but after some confusion at the cashier station/hostess stand, our name was called almost immediately after getting put on the list. The confusion seemed to be the result of a party of 17 showing up so several employees were trying to figure out how to deal with that while we stood around waiting. Finally, we were led to a table, where as we got close, the server stopped to do something with the party of 17 and pointed at a table and told us to go sit over there. Not exactly a warm welcome. From where I sat, the table was still wet. I couldn't decide if it was from the previous patrons, or from being wiped down. There appeared to be some rings from some wet glasses, but I couldn't be sure. Someone came by to take our drink order and a few minutes later our server came over to take our order. We ordered a medium "Better Boy" pizza, which boasts seven pounds of meats, cheeses, and veggies. It has pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, ham, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, extra cheese and features the Mater's signature cherry tomato in the center. That's one heck of a pizza! The server warned it might take about 45 minutes to come out, but it certainly didn't seem that long.. When it finally came, it was piping hot and smelled oh so good. It's one massive pie and we ordered a medium!! It's a very thick crust and piled high with the toppings. Girlfriend and I could only manage to eat a little more than half of this beast. This was one incredible pizza, the toppings were all very tasty and fresh and the pizza sauce was really awesome. I didn't want to stop eating this thing, but I just couldn't put any more of it away. It made for great leftovers the next day though! When I first looked at the menu, I thought it was a little pricey, but after getting the massive pizza, I see why they charge what they do. Definitely a reasonable price! So, you're asking why the four stars? Well, the restaurant is cramped and LOUD. The aforementioned tables and seating issues also factored into it. The website boasts TVs, but the one where we sat was either broken or turned off. An interesting note, Mater's serves beers from a local micro-brewery, the Back Forty Brewing Company. I didn't try any beer that night, but that might be worth checking out next time I visit!
