Feb 7th, on Saturday, Noël Lori-Elizabeth Teel, Dale Tony Vanoy and I was in Florence Alabama for a few hours. We walked around the time checking out the sites and we had lunch there and even visited the campus of UNA. I had read some reviews on Bunyan's BBQ and about their fab SLAW...basically claiming their Slaw was dah' Bomb...so we had to go right? we are right there!!! So, after several views of the google map on my android, I finally found the small BBQ joint in a run down part of town a few blocks back from the main drag, about 10 blocks to be exact. It was only a little to the right after you pull out of the WC Handy Birth Park and Museum. I don't think I would have found it if it hadn't been for myself stopping at the park first. I pulled into the parking lot. The place is small. Noel didn't want anything but a sprite and Tony wanted one with chili onions and mustard..I told him that their slaw got tons of raves but he said NO SLAW..I will taste yours. So I went in to the counter..The lady wasn't real friendly. Usually when you tell someone it is your first time, they are usually helpful ...but not her..I guess she was tired or something. I told her, I need one with chili onions and mustard, a sprite and then one with everything. She said..WE ONLY MAKE IT ONE WAY..I said do you put a sauce on it? She said NO our way ONLY...I said okay, I will take two please and a sprite..she directed me to the cooler behind me for the drink. she charged me $2.45 each hot dawg and a $1 for the sprite. When I got to the car I told Tony..just eat it!!!! He said this is not what I ordered, I said I know..but they only make it their way..so try it...it won't kill you.. after I unwrapped mine..I asked why is the wiener so red..??? we all laughed including Noel...but I have to admit THIS IS ONE UGLY DAMN HOT DOG...but it was really good. The mustardy vinegary slaw was pretty good. The red wiener was hot. The slaw mixture was so wet and runny, it mad the steamed bun soggy and they had a toothpick in to hold it together..very messy for eating in a car.. I would eat here again. I wouldn't dream about them or seek them out like I do Gus' from Birmingham, but I would eat them again.

The BEST BBQ in the shoals. I've have been eating here since I was in high school and still frequent this spot every couple weeks!

Hot slaw and pulled pork!! I still dream about this place. The best sandwich I've ever had

Best hotdog I've had in a long time! The hot dog bun was squished and tasted cheap, but the hotdog itself with their sauce (not coleslaw) was amazing. A few tables inside and outside, but I would definitely get my food to-go next time.

Great food. The slaw is the best slaw I ever had in my life. As a matter of fact I eat the slaw on everything. Neighborhood classic.

The menu is tiny. The meat is great. However, the advertised/menu listed "cole slaw" is actually "hot slaw" - not bad at all, but certainly not expected by a tourist. Had it been advertised/listed on the menu as "hot slaw," I would have been much happier. The baked beans were cold. Cash only.

I cannot say enough good about their BBQ!!!!! If you live in Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham, Jackson MS, Tuscaloosa, Oxford (Ole Miss), Starkville (Mississippi State), drive to Florence for this BBQ at lunch and enjoy the day in Florence. Then go back for dinner. When I am in Florence I could eat a Bunyan's sandwich for every meal. I am not kidding. It is that good. I will say that I think Flobama on Court Street may have better pulled pork, but nobody touches Bunyan's hot slaw and their BBQ sauce. I visit Florence once a year and every year, the folks behind the counter are not friendly. They aren't rude, they're just not friendly. It is awkward. But their food is worth the awkwardness. However, this year, I went there twice, and they were nice (almost sweet) each time. Big improvement in customer service!

Hot slaw. On everything. For all your days. A local classic or perhaps antique.

I have just arrived in lovely florence alabama. This was my first meal in town, I can't actually say that I went to this establishment as the people I am staying with picked it up for us. It was very tasty. The hot slaw was bangin, I repeat bangin, I might be able to eat it for the next four days I am in town. All that being said I am now on a quest for the best BBQ Florence has to offer.

This has been a family favorite and tradition since before I was born. I've been eating this BBQ since I was five so let's say for 24 years. It's unlike any other BBQ because of the spicy slaw you put on your sandwich. They also give you some hot sauce to put on the sandwich. The combination reminds me of something a chef could sell in NYC for $20 a sandwich, but you can get it here for next to nothing. I don't live in this area anymore and I sometimes have it packed in dry ice and flown to me in Albuquerque. Thank goodness I'm in town now so I can eat it up!!!

Amen to the slaw. Love that its got a little kick. Great BBQ sandwich, bottled cokes and sweet heat chips--what more can you ask for.

I grew up eating sandwiches from Bunyan's. It can't be beat, my absolute favorite bbq! Simple formula. Sandwich, coke, bag of chips, outdoor picnic tables, they've got it down. No frills, no up town attitude. thank you very much!

Ditto on Stephen W. ("best BBQ sandwich you will ever eat"). Best thing ever. Great meat to begin with, but the hot slaw makes it. Word to the wise: buy the BBQ and slaw bulk, or otherwise unconstructed, and assemble yourself, even if you are alone (I've ordered as a sandwich and gotten too little meat and slaw per bun). Also, they will vac pac meat for you (if only I could buy jars of the slaw).

Here is how much we love Bunyan's: We drive from Washington, D.C., to Florence, Alabama, once a year for no other reason than to eat at Bunyan's and take home as many bottles of their barbeque sauce as we can. The slaw, which we attempt to duplicate at home, is absolutely to die for. Their barbeque sandwich is heaven in my mouth.

The regular bbq sandwich is a little small, I'd go for the large one next time. The bbq is good.... the slaw is out of this world! I can't wait to go back.

I'm from Tuscaloosa originally, so I'm not really used to this style of BBQ... but I'm a huge fan of Bunyan's. I love the vibe. I love the size. I love the food. I love the people. I love can cokes. You can't go wrong with Bunyan's.

I never complain about service so it's a good thing this place cooks up some good grub. The potato salad is excellent. Anyhow the lady who took my order was so rude it was almost funny. She said "what you want" gave me an icy stare then when I politely told her walked away from me and told another lady to finish talking with me. I said I would eat there but they gave me a to go order as if to imply I needed to leave. I gave a happy thank you sat down and opened a book to read as I took my sweet time. Lastly I gave my best angelino thank yous and hit the road.

I could sum up this review in two words: slaw dogs. But you, faithful reader, you want more than that, right? Fine. Eat the slaw dogs, and you'll be happy you had the opportunity to do so. I heard about Bunyan's from some folks after a round of golf, and was able to convince 14 other guys that this was the place we needed to go for dinner. We rolled up about 30 minutes before closing, and Bunyan's was not ready for us, but they did their damndest to make sure we were all fed, and that nobody went home hungry. Ribs: yes, you should eat these. Chicken: it's the healthiest thing on the menu, other than the Slaw: wow. Like NOTHING I've ever had before. I am going to work to replicate that slaw, it was that good. Slaw Dog: you have not lived until you've put this in your tummy. On top of all that, Mr. Cole(Bunyan's his nickname or middle name, can't remember) came out to talk to us, because I think he had a hard time believing that a motley crew like us could get it together to find his place. This gentleman, and there's no better word for him, was a fantastic host, and was happy to see that we were all enjoying his food the way we were. The fifth star? They gave us a sack of slaw dogs, on the house, to hand out to the folks at the hotel, as a little publicity. When we warned them that the sack might not make the trip without "losing" a few, they threw in a 2nd sack for us. That's the kind of stuff you just don't see all that often. Go, eat, enjoy, and thank them for being around.

I'm not sure if fill my trunk with their sandwiches, but they're good. Get the hot slaw BBQ with hot sauce. Maybe 2. And the hot dog is real tasty too. Great hospitality as well.

Had to give Bunyan's Bar-B-Que a try because of all the rave reviews I was reading on Yelp. Well, IMO, it's ALL ABOUT THE SLAW, and nothing more. That slaw is a watery mess, but it is also extremely tasty. I wonder if they just sell the slaw itself ? Honestly, it would be the only reason I'd go back. The meat in my pork sandwich was dry, but the slaw saved it. Hot dog looked pathetic when I unwrapped it, but again, "the slaw" saved it. It's all about the slaw at Bunyan's, plain & simple. Quick update -- stopped in for lunch at Bunyan's BBQ over the weekend of 12/13/14. Ordered a small pork platter, with sides of beans & cole slaw. Pork itself was tasty enough, although I felt the portion size was small for the price. Was not crazy about the sides, way too spicy for me, slaw had a mustard-like taste to it. That's all, will post a pic.

Pulled pork was marginal and dry, but the sauce (thin sweet spicy vinegar) complimented it very well. Cold beans and warm slaw. I would be unlikely to return.

I believe this to be the best BBQ in the country. Can't get enough of it. We have brought sealed bags of it to California and even tried duplicating the recipe. Fantastic consistency and flavor. The slaw is key and the hot sauce is addictive.

Amazing food! Pulled pork and hot slaw was the best sandwich I've ever had. Also got a hot dog and it was so good I will never be able to eat a regular hot dog again. On top of all that the people there are some of the friendliest people ever! I'll be going back before I leave Alabama!

A favorite. Pulled pork sandwich w/hot slaw every time. Only choice I make is large or small, and how many extra for later, when I always crave more. I've been obsessed with Bunyan's hot slaw since high school, when I bagged groceries next door to earn money to spend at Bunyan's. Visiting Florence in Jan 2010, single digit temps allowed me to use my rental car trunk as a freezer for a pile of Bunyan's bbq sandwiches to eat for days. Bunyan's is nothing fancy, just the counter, a basic menuboard, and lots of people scarfing down awesome bbq out in their cars.

I had the pulled pork sandwich topped with hot slaw. It was fabulous. I'll make a point of returning anytime I am in the area.
