Good food, sit in the bar area. We had great service and my coconut shrimp was the best I have had!

Mmmm. Great service. Great ambience and fantastic food. The Greek inspired dishes and seafood are very good and adventurous diners will enjoy them. But those who seek the familarity of chicken tenders at every restaurant will be pleasantly surprised by the juicy filet and perfectly seasoned and cooked batter. The desserts are sinfully good and worth hours on the treadmill. I had my first experience w fried dill pickles here...I think I need to cultivate more appreciation for the dish before I comment on it.

I've given this place chance after chance simply because I like fish. It never fails that one or more of the staff is incompetently rude or inhospitable in one way or another. This time I was dining alone and doing self service. I thought self service was standard procedure. Your plastic lobster beeps and you get your own food. I had been sitting with my lemonade for several minutes waiting for the signal to get the meal. I go get the meal on cue. During my return to the same table, this 'hostess' is standing and blocking my pathway. She tells me in a manner and tone akin to reprimanding a disobedient schoolboy that I cannot sit in the 'full service' area and will need to move to another table. She offers to retrieve and carry my drink that remained on the table, which she did. She could have easily, and in a much more polite fashion, approached me during my wait at the table. It was obvious I was self service to all the staff. It was almost as bad as having my meal on the table and then being asked to move. Is this what racism was like? Btw, I'm white, as was she. Some employees were being kind and polite and I feel bad for them. I packed my meal to go and left, as my appetite was gone as my anger got the better of me. I made some harsh comments to the friendly employees on my way out. I'd like to apologize to them. The problem causing employee was nowhere to be seen at that moment. I'll just take my rod and reel and catch my own fish. I go in other restaurants in the area and have nary a problem. Maybe Saturday night is a bad time to eat out alone. They never have anything worth watching on their TVs anyway that I've ever seen. The hostess needs to go to hospitality school. Food was mediocre. $21 for mahi-mahi.. See photo

It's was good, but a little bland. I ordered the lobster bisque and added some hot sauce that was on the table along with some salt & pepper. Then it was much better. The same for the fish tacos, had to spice them up just a bit, and I generally don't like anything too spicy. It just needed more flavor. The service was fine and friendly, I'm sure I'll be back.

We arrived at Fish Market on 280 at around 8:00 P.M. last night. We walked up to the counter to order. Amanda was the only one there and she was doing her close out for the night. She told me that she would be a minute. She continued with her close out completely ignoring us. She made no call to the rear for assistance. Finally, someone else came out and took our orders. I had Athenian Triggerfish with a Greek salad. My wife had fried shrimp with fries. The triggerfish was extremely salty and very grease-laden. My wife's fries were so salty they could not be eaten. It will be a long while before we go back here.

Great fresh fish & seafood recipes with greek influence. Grilled grouper and oyster recipes are a favorite.

Wife had fried catfish with French fries. A traditional southern dish. The fish was crispy with a generous serving. Both of which she likes. Also the salad was good. For myself I saw they had trout al mondine and was interested in the snapper al mondine but wasn't on the menu. The waitress (Ruth) no problem. It wasn't the almondine I am usw to but was VERY good. I had Greek rice who was seasoned just right for my taste. All in all we agreed it was a meal worthy of coming back for. Service excellent. Ambience good. Food better than most.

In my opinion, this is the best Fish Market location in Birmingham. You can get table service and the food seems to taste a little better. I had the shrimp and grits and it was as good as I've had it anywhere. First time id had a hush puppy in a long time and it was good. Came here for business lunch and the service was fast and polite.

WoW rudest experience I've ever had. Terrible service if you can even get any. Food is subpar at best. Don't waist your money here!

They advertise homemade desserts but I saw them taking it out of a container that said Sara Lee. So.... No.

A must visit restaurant spot in Bham. Fairly priced seafood that is cooked very well and nestled inside an old building downtown. Highly recommend the grilled crawfish tails.

Wanted to get a decent seafood dinner while in town. Came across this local chain. We were blown away. The food was amazing and the portions were huge. The prices were also very reasonable. Great service as well!

In all the years I've been going to this location, I have only two minor complaints that I hope management fixes...if they even read yelp? 1. Fries - I like fries to be crisp, not brown and overlooked. 2. Salad - for the quality and prices of the food, there is no reason why this place can't put together a decent salad. The salad is nothing more than iceberg lettuce. Smh. Please serve salad with leafy greens, that have some real nutrients. The two reasons above are why I gave 4 of 5 stars.

Everything seemed great untill I we paid the bill. The price changed while we were trying to look at the long menu! we were there 10min before lunch ended, but ordered at 3:05pm, and our food entree went up 3-4 dollars each! The guy should have told us the time! knowing we were looking at the lunch menu & Lunch specials, and we were asking questions about everything because it was our first time there! He was nice, but neglected to warn us about the time! He left shortly afterwards, and a lady took his shift, she was not frendly, nor did she smile when we asked for to-go boxes. The food was VeryVery Good! Just wished the service matched the good food!

Great local chain! We ordered the charbroiled oysters, raw oysters, mussels in white wine sauce and herbs, and mussels in Italian tomato sauce and herbs. Everything was very good. Prefer the mussels in wine sauce vs tomato sauce.

Anytime I'm in town I try to make it to the Fish Market. Always great food, at a fair price. If you like good food especially fish or greek, do yourself a favor and try The Fish Market. It rocks

I really would like to give The Fish Market more stars... but every time I go it just does not improve enough for more. The staff is friendly, clean, sunny and spacious. Then comes the food... looks very appealing your plate, first bite or two pretty good... then your you go for a few more bites and your fish is just not tasting the same or is hard as s brick. And don't choke on the hush puppies that taste like sawdust. Stick to the french fries - they are actually very tasty and seasoned generously. I'm not sure what they could do to improve the 280 location. It is just OK. I will go back because sometimes it is just the best place to meet at times for lunch. And if I notice a change, I'll edit my review.

Being new in town we wanted to try this local favorite. What a mistake. The fish was so soggy with oil I and so over cooked I could not even tell what kind of fish it was. And I love fish. Also shorted by at least an oz the Stella Artois beer serving. We tipped in cash and found a tip had also been added later to our credit card. There are so many other better places to go Dixie Fish, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Landry's, and Pappadeaux's should get you started.

the fish market has a great reputation for wonderful seafood and it's well deserved, if you go to the downtown location. it is amazing, how different the food and service is between the downtown location, and the 280 and montgomery hwy location. We came in for lunch on a saturday and ordered at the counter. The lady was rude and preoccupied with something else. she missed half our order and when the total was correct, I informed her we must have missed something, it should be higher. She had missed not one, but two of entrees in the process. Even though we were a party of 3, she rang up one entree and a salad, with one drink. When i corrected her on the total, she flip the computer screen around at me and told me to look at it. As if the computer had taken our order and somehow made a mistake. she corrected the "computers" mistake and we paid for our meal. by the time we sat down at our table, our food was ready. the one entree and salad that is. the other two entrees, weren't on order the server told us. he asked to see my receipt and i gave it to him. he left to get our order. i noticed a mildew smell and it was coming from the table. if i had to guess, i would guess they are wiping the tables with a mildewed rag. we moved to another table and found the same smell there. i would be willing to bet all the tables were wiped with the same mildewed rag. we wiped the table with napkins as best we could. one of us, enjoyed their entree, while the other two waited 15 mins for our entrees to get there. the food wasn't on par with the downtown location. the fish was curled into a mess, some stuck together. the batter was salty. the hush puppies were overloaded with onions and slightly burnt. the two salads we ordered were drenched in dressing. if you want good seafood with excellent service, go to the Fish Market downtown.

Tried the fish market based on the reviews I had seen and it was ok. I had the New Orleans snapper which was tasty, I would order it again. We also tried the oyster po boy, it was good not great. It didn't come with aioli but you should request it. The Alfredo pasta was huge for a kids size portion. I wasn't blown away overall, but would be willing to try it again. They charge for refills on ice tea and the full vs self service is a bit confusing.

Where do I start. I guess by saying that I passed Longhorn, Joe's Crab Shack, Outback....even Chilis to eat at this place. What are these 5 star yelpers thinking?? Only in Birmingham. I was expecting something much different i.e. Atlanta Fish Market. This place looks great from the outside, average casual on the inside and the food mediocre. Literally Red Lobster with another name. I went with the Greek salad and grilled scollops. The salad was pretty good but overly smothered in feta. Then came the scallops... Bay scallops dumped into a rice bowl with a side of hush puppies! I then mentioned to the waitress that I thought it came with rice so that followed in yet another rice bowl. The rice was pretty much on par with any cheap seafood restaurant you might happen into. Scollops were at least cooked properly, but came out nearer to cold. To top it all off, the drinks were weak....why didnt I just order beer? This place wouldn't even make it in most metropolitan areas and my guess is not much longer for Birmingham. Go to Hot Hot....wish I had tonight.

I recently visited here for dinner. I had the grilled Cobia. Unfortunately it was over cooked and dry. The Greek salad and grilled oysters were good. The most concerning thing was what was being offered on the daily specials board. I could not believe that they were selling Walu flown in daily from Hawaii. This fish is also known as Butterfish, it's correct name is Escolar. This fish has been banned from sale in Italy and Japan, it is not banned for environmental reasons. It is banned because it causes severe diarrhea. Escolar's wax ester content can cause keriorrhea (Greek: flow of wax), gempylotoxism or gempylid fish poisoning.[4] Keriorrhea is similar to diarrhea, only the body will expel yellowish-orange drops of oil instead of liquid bowel movements. Some individuals suffering from escolar-induced keriorrhea also report other digestive issues, including stomach cramps, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and anal leakage; onset may occur between 30 minutes and 36 hours following consumption.[5] This condition may also be referred to as steatorrhea. Two known ways to reduce the likelihood of escolar-induced keriorrhea are to limit portions to six ounces or less[6] and to consume portions close to the tail, which typically have a lower wax ester content. Italy and Japan have banned the sale of escolar due to its potential side effects. It has been banned from consumption in Japan since 1977, as the Japanese government considers it toxic.[11][12] In 1999, the Swedish and Danish national food administrations informed fish trade associations and fish importing companies about the problems escolar and related fish could cause if not prepared properly and issued recommendations. In early 2007, after a public outcry, receiving consumer complaints about mislabeled fish and conducting an investigation,[13] the Hong Kong government's Centre for Food Safety recommended escolar not be used for catering purposes, advised clear labeling and identification of fish species before sale, and purchase of fish from reliable sources, and recommended consumers become aware of the possible health effects of consumption of escolar, oilfish, and related species. The Hong Kong government has established a working group composed of members of the academia, trade and consumer group to prepare guidelines for assisting the trade and consumers in identifying relevant species of fish. In the United States, the FDA, after receiving complaints about diarrhea associated with escolar consumption, issued a bulletin recommending against import of the fish in the early 1990s. However, the FDA backed away from this recommendation and withdrew the bulletin several years later after deciding the fish was nontoxic and nonlethal. Currently, the FDA informally recommends, "Escolar should not be marketed in interstate commerce."[14] In mid-2007, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, after investigating cases of diarrhea caused by mislabeled fish, decided not to ban escolar or oilfish, but instead issued a fact sheet[15] noting the potential adverse effects of consumption and recommending consumers speak with their retailer, verify fish species and consume the fish in small portion sizes using preparation methods that reduce oil content. Hawaiian State Representative James Tokioka introduced HB2669, a bill aimed at banning the catch, sale or possession of escolar.[16] HB2669 was deferred on February 1, 2010 In any case, this doesn't look like a type fish that should be served in any restaurant. Out of all the fish in the sea they choose to have a banned fish flown in. I wonder how many people have experienced the stomach problems without ever suspecting it's cause?

The custom metal doors I met at the entrance were much like George Sarris: flamboyant... And maybe a little heavy too! The fish market's reputation precedes itself, however this additional location should be carefully subjected to the scrutiny held to any other restaurant regardless of name. Seafood is a mix of fresh, frozen, and farm raised. A restaurant that only serves fresh seafood would likely fail in a city like Birmingham. I gotta hand it to George, he gives us the option and I like that. If I've got the money for authentic, he has the time! You may laugh but my favorite dish on the menu is the fried okra. I am a fried okra fanatic and nowhere in Birmingham have I found comparable texture, taste, and presentation. I don't know if it's battered+frozen and I don't care. I will knock down those heavy doors and George Sarris himself to get the fried okra. $10-$20 should be expected for full service dining in. Food cost for seafood is unreal, so I try to give the benefit of doubt when browsing the menu. When I feel that Fish Market is pricy, I consider that Joe's Crab Shack sticker shock is more hypovolemic than psychosomatic. (Vomit) The food is good, but I'm not paying $40 for a mesh bag full of dead sea creatures regardless of native habitat. And a corona will not subdue me into "getting over" the price. If you choose to get full service, it's usually fairly good. Today, the waitress got my order wrong but apologized several times, fixed it, and offered a substitute while waiting. I don't care who messed the order up, she fixed it. The quantity has been inconsistent!?? I have seen $10 plates covered in food, and $20 meals with the same portions. I still don't know the difference between the Captains Platter and Sailors Platter. I think the Sailor is a cheaper substitute for captain while he is drunk in his quarters or piloting the Exxon Valdes. The scenery is pretty cool. Live music sometimes etc. Nice bar, new building, great parking, pretty landscaping. They also have a small outdoor seating area that I have yet to try. It's really not that bad of a place to hang out :) George, if you are reading this. I watch you cooking on the news while I'm wearing pajamas... Keep up the great work. It's not the original, it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn great!

Walked on based on a suggestion. Here in Birmingham on a business trip, I found the New England Clam Chowder to be good with fine flavor. I had grilled Mahi Mahi and found it to be lightly spiced and very good. A truly acceptable eatery for this business traveler.

I have eaten all over the world, and my experience was very positive. My parents and I entered the restaurant on a Thursday about 5:30PM and discovered the restaurant was already popular. Still, we were seated immediately, asked for drinks, and got our water from the friendly hostess. Within minutes, a spunky waitress came to get our orders. I was indecisive, and the waitress thankfully gave her honest opinions about various options, considering my espoused preferences. I appreciated her guidance, and she found the perfect thing for my desires that day: I wanted something with lots of complex flavor and not just a slab of fish (my regular). She recommended the "Greek Island Fish" entree with triggerfish. Within a reasonable amount of time, we were all served. My father was pleased with his broiled flounder. My mother was pleased with her appetizer, Greek Shrimp & Crab Salad (strangely doesn't come with lettuce, unless you ask and pay extra). I found that my dinner had tremendous flavor with its olives, capers and (I think) feta cheese. It was twice the volume than I could eat, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. The fish was nicely cooked--not raw but not overcooked. There was a lot of rice and sauce. The sides were less impressive. The sweet potato fries were more boring than I've had at other places and sprinkled with sweet cinnamon. The green beans weren't remarkable either. The hushpuppies were as good and greasy as any place. The price is reasonable, the tastes are good, and the portions are large. From my one experience, I highly recommend this restaurant!

Decent restaurant that serves its purpose. Good place to go with a large group. Not "knock your socks off good" but good enough. Large menu, large portions, fair prices. I recommend the bang bang grouper.

Food bland! Fried green tomato with cornmeal was cold and tasted like wet sand. The calamari was served at room temperature and had no flavor. It was very chewy. Justin's charbroiled oysters smelled and tasted of old fish. The waitress came and removed out menus. Then came and ask "What did y'all want?" She was going through the motion and not very personable at all. It was obvious she didn't want to be there. Half way through our meal , she came to let us know that our check was ready and another guy would be bringing our drinks. He brought them in styrofoam "to go" cups. We got the message that we needed to hurry up and leave!
