The service and cleanliness was poor! Also at the end of our dinner there was a giant roach running around the restaurant close to my foot. The manager dealt with the situation poorly I would never return to this location ever again.

If your cuisine preference is a bit bipolar, this is a good place to visit. One side us Chinese; the other is Japanese. For this venture, we turned Japanese. I've been to a few Japanese restaurants, and this place is pretty decent. The biggest stress is probably hoping you're not seated at the same table as some obnoxious idiot talking about how he's an expert on sushi and Asian cuisine. That's the guy you want to stab with your chopsticks. We lucked out -- no obnoxious people. The Hibachi show was good, with our Chef "Choy?" or whatever his name was. Our server Douglas was great and got a decent tip from us. The food was decent. I've had better, but it wasn't bad. If you have leftovers, don't do what we did. We walked out leaving them on the table. We didn't even make it to our car, and we went back in to get them. No luck that time. They had already cleared it out.

Writing this review on the experience I had tonight.. because it always seems to vary. Tonight was great. We sat at the bar and ordered the shrimp fried rice, crab wontons, California roll, and Philadelphia roll. The food came out super quick and tasted freshly cooked. Not to mention the server/ bartender was great! She got me a to go cup and to go box! The only reason I give it a 4 is because I feel the service should not differentiate so much between visits.

Everything is so fresh and so good. I love coming here. And so much food! It just keeps coming. Clean place fun and always a good time. The rice and the veggies are by far my favorite. And the best part is it quick which is nice at lunch.

I know a Stix diner can't expect to get a comedian and entertainer at every meal, but I have never had a chef speak about 10 total words the entire time. No banter, no show, he just threw the food on the grill and left at the end. He wasted so much rice slopping it onto our plates. A big disappointment for a birthday celebration and a $100 tab. Prices seem to have gone way up, and it's just not worth it.

Great bang for your buck! They have happy hour Monday - Friday 4:40 - 6:30. There is a lot variety on the happy hour menu and rolls starting at $2. Great meal for too with plenty of food for right at $20. Not to mention the sushi is really good!

I had the yellowtail sashimi and the red dragon roll and they were absolute perfection! It was so good I forgot to snap a picture of my food or check in lol. My waiter was funny and delightful as well. I found my sushi joint! The hot and sour soup was a tad bit too sweet but still good and I love that they kicked the soup up a notch just cut back on the sugar and it'll be perfection as well.

Everything moves slow here. Over priced for sure in the sushi - especially for quality. It is good, but not amazing. Service was ok. Lauren was ok but not too friendly or attentive. Again, no problem except they are a bit pricey. I would come back, just not dying to come back.

Terrible. Terrible service and management. Food was sub par. Very disappointing. After reading some of the reviews we agree more with the lowest rating of this place. Enter at your on risk.

We had reservations for 7:20PM. Was told it would be 15-20 minutes, so my party and I went to the bar. Stood at the bar for 15 minutes and got passed over twice as other customers who hadn't been there nearly as long got served. After 30 minutes we were finally seated. Food was great... Until the chicken that was supposed to come with my chicken and scallops never came. Finally my chicken came with the check, cold from sitting around in the kitchen. My ticket was discounted $4.99, but I will still never return nor recommend. The food simply was not good enough to make up for the terrible service.

Me and my wife(2 people)Waited an hour and watched 3 large parties come in after us and be seated before us. They apologized and we still could not be seated right away. Not a good experience when you are super hungry. We also witnessed another couple being skipped over. Seems they prefer to take larger groups over smaller parties.

Great good prepared fresh at your table! Dinner and a show! The salmon and scallops were just superb. Big portions so come hungry. A truly great place for family and friends. Busy on Sunday evening.

Always ALWAYS always have slow service and it smells a bit odd when you first walk in, but the sushi is delicious. Portions on the soup box are (as usual) a bit small, but the flavors are all there in everything I have eaten there.

We are regulars here for sushi. Do: -Order sushi. I have enjoyed every roll I have tried. -Go on a weekday before 6:30pm. They have an amazing happy hour menu. $2 hot sake? Yes, please. Don't: -Get hibachi. -Go on a weekend. Way too crowded.

Great food for sit in, but don't order out. Portions tend to be smaller and quality is compromised. I ordered a chicken entre and sushi. Of you want these for carry out, there are better options in the same area. If eating in, food's great!

Standard show cook stuff. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. We were in Birmingham for Boo at the Zoo and it also happened to be my oldest daughter's birthday. She loves this for her birthday even though she is 19. A little pricey considering nothing really blew us away, but then again it is what it is and most of it is as expected.

This place is awesome, nice mellow setting and some good tasty meal choices, that is presented nicely. Most importantly I had some outstanding service!!!!

Went here for lunch. Very friendy staff and chef. I ordered just sushi, which was good but I have had better. My friends ordered Habachi and I tasted their rice; it was ok Mizu in Alabaster is better. It's really a taste preference I believe. I have eaten at Mizu with the same girl I ate with this day. She preferes Stix's rice and sushi but I do not. Otherwise, it's a decent place to go.

This is our favorite upscale Asian restaurant in town. We love the teriyaki chicken - I get double veggies and my husband gets double rice. Their sushi is really great too. Expect to pay a little more, but in my opinion it's always worth it.

I would really rate Stix two stars, but I have to nudge it up based upon its surroundings. It is what it is: a sushi restaurant in Birmingham. All of the fish has been trucked or flown-in, and it shows. It's decent, and the chef does what he can with what he has, but it isn't *GOOD* sushi, as anyone who lives on the coast will tell you. Our service was quick and our drinks were always full, and it would most likely be a very good restaurant if it had fresher product.

Wish there were more stars! The chef's are always friendly and personable and the food always fresh. Big portions for the money!!

I love this place! The hot and sour soup is some of the best I've ever had! The sushi is so wonderful and I love to order ginger dressing to dip it in. The grill is expensive. My husband and I went there on our wedding night and spent $60 for the two of us. It was expected though. (Trust me, that was the most we've ever paid for dinner!) I'd say that it's expensive, but the food is so good! I recommend it.

Love love love! I always order around the same thing.....ginger salad, spicy tuna or the MANGO roll that is amazing!!! Very reasonably priced. Great, attentive staff. Nice atmosphere.

Run-of-the-mill Hibachi. We came in at 2:30 on a Saturday and was told that we'd have to wait a few minutes because of shift change. I didn't really understand why a place that doesn't serve breakfast is having a shift change at that time of day but in the end the service and food was good.

First off, as somebody who was only here on business and has no loyalty to Birmingham whatsoever, people who use a review space to slam the city should really step back and consider where they have decided to call home. Smyrna, Ga? Really? Methinks the lady doth protest too much. If you are living in the center of strip mall hell in a soulless suburb, you have no room to talk. Check yourself, darlin'. Anyway, my experience with Stix was very, very positive. I needed my weekly sushi fix, so after a quick search for sushi joints using Yelp on my iPhone, I made my way there. The Packers-Viking game was on, so I made my way to the sushi bar where one of the chefs was watching and trying to explain what was happening to the other chef. He seemed to share my dislike for the traitor Brett Farve, so he instantly became my friend. Bingo! If you're a buddy of the sushi chef, that means one thing - freebies! I was starving this particular night, so I must say I gorged while I was there. I had several varieties of nigiri sushi and all were extremely fresh, tasty and nicely presented. The standard spicy tuna roll was very tiny and not as spicy as I would have liked, but it may have just been a onetime mistake. The other roll I had was a spider roll which was delicious. So, great food, great service and a great interior make for an overall great dining experience. I would highly recommend it if you find yourself in town and want sushi.

It's not my favorite place in town to go for sushi, but it's definitely not bad. Good, even.

Stix is the best Chinese food in Alabama, as far as I know. When we are in Birmingham we always eat there. The quality remains high. Everything we ordered there last time was awesome. Long may it continue.

I had take-out: Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Asian Coconut Curry Vegetables, and Beef and Broccoli. Everything was tasty, satisfying, and even packaged well. My friend enjoyed it as well. We even had leftovers for the next day.

I used to eat at this place once a week but they have gone down hill lately. Tonight's meal consisted of over cooked rice burnt shrimp and burnt steak. (Ordered med rare) we let the manager know and still paid 51 dollars for food that I won't give my dog. Guess it's time to find a new Japanese restaurant.

We came for happy hour. The cosmopolitan was pretty descent. Lettuce wrap and seaweed salad were good but the sushi was mediocre, at best. . We had the tiger roll and the Bama roll. Definitely nothing to be thrilled about. It had very little shrimp and salmon and I thought a little too much of the crunchy stuff. It I come back here it certainly won't be for the sushi.

7:23 Feb 27th. Excellent food. Really good sushi. Terrible awful waiter. This place has been around a while so benefit of the doubt. Bad hire. Really bad.

My family used to love this place. Unfortunately overtime the food quality has deteriorated. Stix just cannot compete with other Chinese/Japanese restaurants. Food is bland and shrimp has a strong fishy smell. Not worth it.

Very, very good! Stix has the best fried rice in Alabama. It has no corn! So many Asian restaurants around B'ham are putting corn in their fried rice now and it drives me crazy. We ordered the spring roll appetizer, which was really delicious. It was hot and fresh, and I nearly burned my tongue trying to eat it, but it was so good I couldn't stop! Shrimp fried rice for our entree, which is the best, as I already said. Whitley, our waitress, was very nice and attentive. She made sure that we were well taken care of and left happy. We plan to come here again ASAP!

Stix has a limited sushi menu. It's okay but certainly not what I'd call good. The tepanyaki is typical of other places around town. Overall, it's an okay place but there are far better, especially for sushi.

P.F Changs meets Benihana! Yes that is correct you can have Chinese or Japanese here. They even have the option for chefs to cook your food in front of you. I really enjoyed the mongolian combo and the spring rolls. The only thing I thought was absurd was an hour before closing we had staff cleaning up around us! If your restaurant hours are until 9:30pm you should wait! I managed to block the servers stacking chairs out of my peripheral but still was disappointed by this. I guess if you are an early bird you should be fine.

Stix always came to my rescue during my 5 years living in the abomination of a state they call Alabama. I found this place after leaving the Galleria one day and all I saw was "SUSHI". If anyone has ever been to Alabama, sushi restaurants (or any other remote sign of culture), are not a common occurrence. Its a typical 1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Japanese Steakhouse type of spot. I never ate on the hibachi side, as I'm not a huge fan of eating a meal with a group of people (especially from Alabama) that I don't know. Most of the times I came here I with with someone who didn't eat sushi, so the Chinese side allowed them to eat their typical Chinese fare, while I indulged in my fish and rice smorgasbord. I have to say, although they are nothing atypical from any other mid-level Japanese place, the sushi was always fresh and the sizes of fish were amazing. The Chinese look pretty good too--not overly breaded as some places are. The calamari was surprisingly always good as well. The service was always soooo friendly...I always got the same waiter...George...every time. And he always called me Alicia Keys, which is a compliment, even though I look nothing like her. It definitely got pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but always worth the wait when I was craving me some sushi! If I ever have to venture back across state lines into no man's land, I would definitely stop back in! *The 5-star rating is based on comparisons to other similar-style restaurants within 150 miles. **Sorry if my utter dislike for BAMA offended anyone ;)

Mr. E and I came here awhile back and ate on the "Chinese side." I don't really understand why this restaurant doesn't choose one concept and do it really well. Small overpriced portions of what seemed like average Chinese food to me. There didn't seem to be anything special about the food, or the atmosphere or anything, but well dressed people were sitting all around us and were having a good time and acting like it was something special. When I got the bill I felt more than a little cheated. Kind of like how I feel after spending three years of my life in Birmingham.

Chinese-Japanese fusion. Sort of. Stix is an unfortunate amalgamation of Chinese and Japanese restaurants -- not food, but restaurants. This one establishment exists as both a Chinese restaurant on one side and a Japanese teppanyaki style restaurant on the other. Bridging the divide is a bar and a makeshift sushi bar. The Chinese food is typical bastardized fanfare with the all the staples thrown in -- sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, mongolian beef, etc. Here the food would be quickly forgettable if not for the price. It's way too expensive for what you're getting. The Japanese side fares a little better and only by comparison. Stix offers the usual assortment of sushi and sashimi. The teppanyaki items are tasty but nothing you couldn't find anywhere else. Ultimately, you're paying for pretty average food in a lackluster environment. You do have to applaud the owners for their sheer brilliance of putting two mediocre dining experiences together and pandering to the "fusion" cuisine crowd. Oh, you can send e-cards from their website. I want to bump it up to four stars for the sheer awesomeness of that feature. Tongue-in-cheek, of course.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
