Best salsa by far in town!

Heavenly! Out of this World! Real authentic Mexican food with the best guacamole and Salsa Verde around. I went to four other restaurants tonight before finding this diamond, and it certainly is not in the rough. The only thing I didn't like about my food is that it is all gone. Great family restaurant and family atmosphere... I am at home, yet I live 600 mile from here. Thank you for a wonderful meal that was just what I was looking for.

The service is excellent, the margaritas are great and the food is pretty good. The tacos with Carne Asada Mexican style (wrapped in foil with onions and cilantro on the side) are very very good and my go-to at Sol Aztecs. The rest of the menu is somewhat hit or miss but never bad.

My wife loves Sol. I think she would eat here everyday. I think their food is above average across the board but they have a few dishes that stand out to me. The Bizteca, a somewhat spicy steak dish; enchilada poblano chicken, a mole covered delight, and asada tacos all stand out. I love the chips and salsa here too...have bought that to take home several times. Tonight I got these new tacos that I thought were great. I had chorizo and steak, mojo, and al pastor. Great meat flavors and the sauce that came with it went very well on the mojo and the chorizo. The service its over the top awesome. Everyone that works in the front of the house is very nice and attentive. I love the teamwork the servers have. I have been here many times before and will be here many times more. Feliz Navidad!

I've visited Sol Azteca a few times since my previous review and I don't know if my tastebuds have changed, or if my expectations have permanently been lowered for finding good Mexican food in Alabama, but this place is a lot better than most strip mall Mexican food joints. It's no superior grill or anything, but have a pitcher of margaritas and you won't care how the food tastes. Even though I have to say, for strip center Mexican, it's not so bad. And the service is great most of the time!

This is your normal Mexican restaurant with some great, hot food brought out to you quickly. I'd say it is slightly better than the average place though, so I might come here before a few others. The lunch fajitas for $7 were solid. I really enjoyed the cheese dip and guacamole.

If I could rate this restaurant at 0 stars I would. I watched our waiter serve several alcoholic beverages to customers who legally could not purchase. I dined here with two friends and noticed a price discrepancy as we were checking out with the waiter. The waiter told our party that we were given obsolete menus and would address the issue with the hostess and the management (i.e., dispose of the incorrectly priced menus) After paying for our meal at the listed price, we left the restaurant and were greeted by the Vestavia Hills Police Department. At this point our party was very confused as to what was happening. We even offered to pay for their error at our expense. I am appalled by this restaurant and the management's treatment of their customers. They chose to lie to the kind police officers that showed up and disposed of the improperly labeled menus when they arrived. Nobody should ever be treated the way that we were! DO NOT DINE AT THIS RESTAURANT!!

The people that run Sol Azteca are the BEST. Very friendly. Best chips and salsa in town. I have been eating here since it was in the old Taiwan building (circa early 1990's). The food is not what it used to be (or maybe others are just better these days). So many others are much better. UPDATE: Went back recently and the food had taken a jump back to the way it had been! Upgrade from 3 to 4 stars. UPDATE: last two visits, chips were stale, food not as good- back to 3 stars.

Update: Food poisoning! See review below. SO glad I did not eat my food here. My friend ate her full meal and ended up with food poisoning. She started throwing up at 2 am and was so sick she could barely stand for the rest of the day. Her temperature was 103 degrees! Eat here at your own risk. I can not figure out for the life of me why this restaurant has positive reviews. (original review): Sorry, not impressed. The cheese dip was great - my meal was horrible. I ordered the taco salad - and yes, I have actually eaten taco salad before. I thought it was just the sour cream that was ice cold, then the guacamole - but the cheese and and lettuce were practically frozen. Half of the tomato slice was green. I was in a hurry so I thought I would just eat the chicken and be done with it - but it was barely warm. I had two bites of chicken and sat my food aside and ate part of my friends food, but the waitress never came back. When she finally did I asked if she could take the taco salad and that I didn't have time to order anything else. I explained what was wrong and she said, "Taco salad is cold. The lettuce is cold, cheese is cold, sour cream is cold, etc, you understand?" (Yes, I know how a refrigerator works, there is a difference between cold and thawed). I told her I understand it is supposed to be cold, but it tasted like it had come from the freezer. It was icy, not cold. I was being super nice about it because I don't like to make a fuss about things. She said she didn't understand because everyone else was eating it. I let it go, then we got the ticket and she charged me for the full meal - I'm serious, I had two bites of this, it was disgusting and I was not about to pay $14 for cheese dip and one glass of tea (she never offered a refill). I told her that I just couldn't pay that for that meal, she said she couldn't do anything because it would come out of her pay. I started to just let it go - but wait, I work for my money too! I said I was sorry if that was the case then I would like to speak to the manager to explain. (All the while my friend had been watching the manager search through the salad behind us???). The waitress told me the manager was not there, he was at church (Monday night), she said there were no managers. I asked her instead if she could write the manager's # on my receipt and I would go ahead and pay the full price for the meal and just call later. Then she said "hold on" she walked away and came back and said she could take part of the charge off, but that since I ate the chicken (two bites!!) that the chicken alone was $5. I told her that didn't make sense, but fine I would pay it. So $10 for cheese dip, one glass of tea, two bites of cold chicken and bad service. We went to pay and when the guy finally came to the counter he asked us how the food was and - it was disgusting. I just finally said it, but told him I wanted to pay and go because we were in a hurry. He told me the same thing, taco salad is cold. I told him that was fine, but I have actually eaten Mexican food before and lettuce should not taste like it came from the freezer. He said he would talk to the waitress. That wasn't really the problem, I would never tell a customer that there is nothing wrong with their food "because everyone else is eating it." I can tolerate mediocre food, I'll give a restaurant a second chance, but bad food and bad service is unacceptable.

Sol Azteca is truly a Vestavia institution and a welcome go-to when you want a no frills meal. It's exactly what you would expect - Ok food, good service, and reasonable prices. I stick with the 3 tacos every time cause it's the best deal going.

Sol Azteca was A-OK. Yes, I'm aware that would normally give them three stars. The food was just fine. Definitely nothing special. The Margarita was good as well. Not amazing and it was that bright green color, but it totally did the job. Why four stars, you ask? The service. We had multiple people check on us throughout the time we were there. Each of them were courteous and very helpful. It was our server, Chris, that really took the cake. It was hard to pinpoint exactly what he did that made him so good, he was just over the top friendly, I guess. Sometimes the rating is not just about the food, which was totally fine.

Good, safe. I like the chips thin, as they are here.

Great new dish: bisteca al mexicana. It's basically steak strips with all the mexi-fixins... Squeeze a big lime all over that bad boy. Best thing on the menu. Margarita is a must have with this.

I really don't understand Sol Azteca's popularity. Chips and salsa are good, but the rest is average at best--too many bland dishes. El Poblano, Los Arcos, and Iguana Grill are all better alternatives.

Deep fried goodness abounds there. As a bonus, they also have a "cheese dip" (even they won't call it queso) that looks a bit like warm half-&-half with jalapeno chunks, but is a great starter if you want to go beyond their (already good) salsa. The one bad thing I had there was the flan, which was probably a great piece of flan before they added both chocolate & strawberry syrup onto it. I vaulted the length of the parking lot after eating that sugar bomb. You will indeed get fat eating here often, but it's a great place to hit when you need your fix. Good roaming mariachis as well, if that's your thing.

While I don't eat at Sol Azteca as much as I used to, the restaurant still ranks as one of Birmingham's great Mexican places. A few years back, Sol Azteca was located a little ways down Hwy. 31 in the bottom of a motor lodge. Though this wouldn't seem like the most popular of locations, the restaurant exuded a certain "authentic" charm that meshed well with the solid menu. Though the restaurant moved a few years ago to a new location in a strip mall, the food quality has maintained a folksy and tasty quality. The food itself is above average but not extremely stand out, however, the salsa is absolutely amazing. Complemented by some light but delicious chips and some great cheese dip, the pre-meal options are worth checking out. The margaritas round off a great dining experience, though the medium isn't as big as at some other establishments in the area. Though its not my first choice for Mexican; overall, Sol Azteca is an above average dining option with great salsa with some pretty good food.

This place gets a ton of local hype, but at best it's above average "strip mall Mexican". What this place does have going for it is consistent quality and outsanding service. If you're looking for this style of Mexican you can't go wrong with Sol Azteca.

The salsa is addictive. Listen to me!! THIS IS THE BEST SALSA YOU WILL EVER HAVE! thank GOD they give you jars of it in-case you want to drink it! It has this citrus-cilantro like flavor that is so unlike any other salsa you have ever had. I always get some guacamole for starters.. they have improved on this! I love the potato burrito and potato enchilada~~ funny cuz that is all that is in there besides lots of greese and soft, heaven-like cheese. But I love it! ; ) Go for some salsa and order light and bring maalox. hahahah!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
