I always passed by here on my way to the farmer's market, saw the crowd but thought it wasn't for me. We usually go as a large group. The line moves fast, so you should know what you want before you get to the ordering part. I usually get seafood, mac and cheese, fruits and a roll. My GOD, the roll is amazing. I wish I knew how to make it! Love, love, love! Always ready to go back!

I drive a truck and have eaten in several places over the years. This is unequivocally one of the best places to eat anywhere. The service included is outstanding. Nothing will disappoint. They have a serving line with the typical cafeteria style setup. What isn't typical is the quality and taste of the food. They also have a menu for those who don't care for the cafeteria line. The seafood here is outstanding with the stuffed flounder being the standout. Pies and cakes are made in house and can steal the show. Prices are average. Meat and three delicious side runs $10. Generous portions.

I had the pleasure of eating here while in town for work. We took a break for lunch and our hosts simply said "we're going to Niki's." Good choice! Now I'm a Yankee, so I'm not too familiar with southern food but it seemed they had pretty much every southern side dish and many mains I've heard of. After eating heavy the last few days, I opted for the Greek chicken, which was automatically topped with a delicious thin vinegar-based gravy. I scooped up sides of green beans, stewed carrots and macaroni and cheese. I grabbed a large dinner roll and skipped the pie. I tried to order unsweetened tea... But when EVERYONE else at my table ordered sweet tea, I realized the error of my ways and reversed my decision. Again, good choice. The roll was delicious. Green beans were on point. The chicken was as tender and flavorful as the Peruvian chicken I get back home, but even juicier and I loved the unique seasonings and gravy. I was hoping the carrots would be maple glazed or otherwise sweet, but were instead swimming in butter, as if Paula Deen herself had whipped them up. There was more than enough liquefied butter to dip my roll in. Not even mad. The macaroni and cheese stood out as the best feature. I could have eaten an entire plate and forgone the healthy baked chicken. I had a bite of a colleague's pecan pie, but wasn't terribly impressed. The nuts were plentiful, but it just wasn't as sticky gooey caramely good like I prefer it. All in all, a solid spot. I'd come back for sure!

I have always heard the adage that Greeks make the best restaurateurs and in Birmingham I certainly would believe it. For years a trip thru Birmingham for our family has meant a stop at the Birmingham Farmer's market and a meal at nearby Niki's. Fresh produce throughout the Mid-South region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee originates in Birmingham at this distribution point for produce from far-away as well as, during season, from local Alabama farmers. If a visit to the Farmer's Market is near meal time, the place to go is Niki's West to enjoy many fresh vegetables, tastefully prepared from the Farmer's Market. A traditional and very efficient cafeteria, you'll find enough variety in their extensive food line to satisfy any taste. My personal favorites here are always the vegetables. Always a sign of a quality establishment, you'll find real butter on the table and a server will bring your beverages promptly and efficiently. During peak hours, lines can be rather long, but move very quickly and wait time is usually pretty short.

There's an old school steakhouse feel to this place, which is why it unexpected for a non-Bham native to find the cafeteria style bar with every kind of veggie. There's a host of folks asking what you'd like, and honestly, with all the choices, it can be overwhelming to pick, especially with several folks looking at you. It can feel rushed since there's normally a line behind you. I always feel like I picked stuff without picking what I really wanted. Some of the veggies taste like they came out of one of those industrial sized cans you get at Sam's. The meat is always good, especially the chicken cooked several different ways. The desserts are tasty and the rolls are scrumptious. Service can be very good with the right person. If you're looking for old school cafeteria style food, Nicky's is for you.

I came to Niki's West with a large group from my workplace. We'd heard wonderful things about the classic Birmingham cafeteria and were very excited to try. I was pumped as soon as we stepped in and saw the huge line of food awaiting us and smelled the scent of good ol' home cooking. As we walked through the line, we carefully selected our choices from the line. Between my husband and I, we tried the following: -baked chicken -fried tilapia -okra and tomatoes -cheese grits -creamed corn -white beans -dressing -cucumbers and tomatoes -cornbread muffins -yeast roll After accompanying our food to our table (the restaurant did a great job of seating us all right away), we could hardly wait to dig in to our goodies. That's when things started to go south. The food was all okay, but very little was great. My husband was disappointed that his fish was cold and not crispy. I was surprised that my chicken had a tangy, vinegar-esque sauce to it that was not particularly appealing. The sides were all okay - most of them had a weird tang that didn't sit well with me. The yeast roll, however, was the highlight of the meal - it was buttery, chewy (in a good way) and completely delicious. We also sampled the chocolate meringue pie that one of my coworkers ordered, which was perfectly prepared and very tasty. The service was very, very good overall - the staff took good care of us and were very friendly. Prices were more than fair for the amount of food we received. We had a great time together at Niki's, though I'm not sure I'd come back on my own.

What can I say about Niki's that hasn't already been said? After all the great reviews, there isn't much left. This place is the epitome of a great Meat and Three. Now, as mentioned before, you better be ready to order when you get to the front. Everyone is friendly, unless you hold up the line. But because of that, the line moves fast no matter how long. The place is HUGE so you always have a seat. Somehow no matter how many people come through the place, they have figured out the perfect amount of tables in order to have enough turnover to NEVER wait. I have had a ton of great food. The livers are great. Beef Tips are fantastic. Some of the best salmon patties I've eaten. But my go to is the veal cutlet. It has the perfect amount of meat/breading ratio. And the gravy just sets it off. I've also never had a bad veggie. Their greens are some of the best. Creamed corn is the bomb. And I am a huge black-eye pea fan. These are definitely in the top 3 I've ever had. And THAT is saying a lot. Don't hesitate if you are looking for lunch in Bham. This is your place.

My first meal in Birmingham and it did not disappoint. The fried green tomatoes were excellent. I had the 4 veggie plate and it was more than I could eat. I shared the coconut cream pie and it may be one of the most delicious desserts I've ever had.

I have been going here for years and it is one of the top lunch places my family wants to go to when visiting Bham. Delicious vegetables with more selection than you can imagine. Plenty of salad options and dessert options too. Swing by the farmers market after eating here.

This place never fails. Had the fried green tomatoes and veal cutlet with some finger licking good gravy. The mac and cheese was amazing as well.

Best of its kind in Birmingham! Southern cooking meat and 3 or whatever you call it this is the place to get it! The food is well prepared and this place is an institution! It's not in the best area but people come from all around to eat here! There is a little Steinfeld soup Nazi situation going on here but its part of the charm. The place serves a ridiculous number of people on a daily basis. They like for the line to move as do the patrons. No one is exactly happy for you hold up the line because it takes you 15 minutes to decide between mashed potatoes or Mac and cheese. You can't go wrong so pick one and move on.

Home style cooking. Buffet line or sit down if you prefer steak(sit down). A place you can take family for a home cooked meal. Buffet max $10.80 1 meat 3 sides comes with bread. Groups welcome. Food buffet-warm. Not sure how they can get it any t hotter than warm at a buffet line eatery. steak & seafood meal average $27.00 off menu vs buffet

A great place to go to if you are craving some southern cooking. They have all the veggies that you can think of along with some great choices of dessert. The place stays busy but line goes fast. The place is a lot bigger inside than what it appears on the outside.

Very shocked to find such good food on an industrial side of town! Completely empty side of town, but the food was extremely delicious! Well worth a try! The menu changes everyday, but there's plenty of great southern food options. I tried the fried chicken breast, fried okra, Brussels sprouts, hot roll, and macaroni! Well worth a try and the parking lot was packed! Reasonably priced!

I went to Niki's the people were very nice. I ordered a steak greens and mac and cheese. Our waitress was very nice. The only complaint I had was the mac and cheese had Grease in it but the steak and greens were excellent. I would go there again.

Niki's West is the real "meat and three" deal. They have a selection which is a bit overwhelming and the line can move quick. Do not pass up the fried green tomatoes....excellent breading and perfectly prepared! Great selection of desserts, too....the chocolate pie is outstanding!

Friday lunch this week, great. wonderful. too much food. but the last one is my fault. Greek Chicken, my favorite. Fried Okra, wonderful. Tom's Slaw, awesome. Bread Pudding, superb. Yeast roll, best. run and eat there!! wish it was open Sundays.

Uhm.. not sure if we went on a bad day or what but the slab of fish that was on my plate smelled funky and was an odd grey reddish pink tone throughout. I ate half because I figured it was just me and ended up getting really sick after. Did not even eat my sides which were mashed potatoes and mac n cheese because I felt so sick. Other half ordered/did not like the club sandwich either.

If you are in the area, you need to eat here. Food is seasoned just right. Greek baked chicken is so tender, it melts in your mouth. So much food to choose from and it is sitting right in front of you or you can order from the menu. Something for everyone! What a hidden treasure this place is.

The best coconut cream pie I've ever had. The best red velvet cake I have ever had. All of the rest of the food here is very good as well. They've got all the southern staples: fried pork chops, black eyed peas, rice and gravy, mac and cheese, corn bread, dressing and gravy, you name it. My wife is a New Yorker and is not really familiar with the "meat and 3" concept (with clearly some greek influence). She said it felt like we were eating someone's thanksgiving dinner haha. Anyway, prices are good, service is great, and this is about as southern as it gets. Will be back for sure.

This is an old school meat and 3 which for me is real cool. See I grew up in the North and we didn't have those in my town. The service is great food is outstanding I go there for liver and onions and do not pass up the peach cobbler there is a special ingredient that they wont reveal. I give this a 4 star go and enjoy.

Lawd help me, these yeast rolls. Could be the best rolls I've ever had in my life...thats a serious statement, but these things had the holy trinity for all bready-type items: Texture (a luscious mix of density and sick-to-the-roof of-your-mouthity, like a buttery, thick Krispy Kreme but, without the sweetness), Butter (my fingertips were greasy, and the rolls are an unctuous shade of yellow,) and Size (its as big as a baby head. Well, not quite, but still.) Get the yeast rolls. The only people who would get anything but the rolls are people who have never HAD the rolls. Get the rolls when you get to the end of the line. Good, classic southern food - you can get everything from fried and grilled chicken, fried and grilled fish and pot roast for your proteins. Greens, cabbage, etc, though most of the sides could stand a hair more salt - not sure if that was intentional or not. Overall, this place does meat(s) and dessert the best, but the star here is really and truly those rolls. I was tempted to get a dozen and take them home to freeze...I wonder if they last in the freezer.

This restaurant is hot for a reason - because it is a great place to spend an evening. The food was wonderful with the highlights the raw bar Niki's West Steak And Seafood Restaurant the salads and the dry aged steaks. Service was flawless. Hard to get a table but totally worth the effort.

Niki's is my absolute favorite place to eat in Birmingham. This is not an exaggeration. I have so many great memories from my childhood at this restaurant. The food is classic Southern. The line is always moving swiftly, the employees are sincere and polite, and this is a no-frills-just-eat-your-delicious-food-and-we-thank-you-for-your-business-dalrin' kind of establishment. I am sad it does not exist in Nashville.

  • Alexis D.

Really... I was not impressed. This has to be the worst meat and three. Bland food dry ass zesty ass Greek chicken. Tasteless brick hard dry as the desert corn bread. The alleged delicious rolls uh no. I really don't get the good reviews. The only thing I can say is the prices are very reasonable. I could go on but I will spare you this time. So when it comes to Niki's..... Let's not and say we did.

Nikis West 233 Finley Ave Birmingham Al (205)257-5751 Niki's West continues to be a good institution and fine example of meat and three establishments. We had lunch there just last week and it was classic comfort food served up Southern steam table style. We both had the greek chicken that is always tasty. Im sure their secret is brining. Its always juicy and tender. The sides were all well prepared and seasoned nicely. The vegetable medley is my goto loaded with peas, butter beans, corn and goodness. Another favorite is the lemon pepper catfish. Don't forget to bring your insulin pump for the banana pudding is served up warm and extra sweet. If you're looking for value and big portions their food service is always quick and friendly. Urban Cowgill

Niki's West is a Birmingham icon. You must eat here if you're passing through town and we who live here share frequent meals. The buffet is fresh and have the best southern veggies I've eaten. So yum! We also enjoy the veal and chicken. No matter what you chose it will be delicious!!!

Niki's West was suggested to us by a local, and boy are we glad we listened. This cafeteria style dining can be intimidating for out-of-towners as the regulars warn that the staff are soup nazi in their approach to serving out their delicious food. However, as long as you don't hold up the line you should be fine. I personally had the Greek Chicken, the fried okra, the broccoli rice, the banana pudding, and the spinach. Flavor is certainly not lacking at this joint. Everything was packed with seasoning, and tasted better than you could hope. Definitely worth the wait in line. I would highly suggest taking someone with you and ordering extra because you will want to taste everything they have. The atmosphere in the dining room is great too. Everyone is enjoying themselves and their food. It's a great place for groups as well. The only drawback was that the young ladies who were checking everyone out were less than friendly. Obviously they are ringing out hundreds of people in a day, but they refused to crack a smile, much less say anything aside from NEXT, and the cost of the meal. Aside from that everything about Niki's is worth experiencing.

Tasty business. We peeled our sweaty selves out of the uhaul and followed yelpers to Niki's. The fish, okra, succotash and bottomless iced tea did not dissapoint. Tons of food. Tasty. Not too pricy. If I went back, I would skip the greens (too sweet and smoky for me) and the cornbread. My partner had cherry pie and should have ordered any other dessert. The salmon croquettes the table next to me ate looked seriously tasty. A perfect welcome back to the South stop.

There is a lot of hype for this place. People like old, hardy restaurants; of course, that doesn't mean that there is any "secret" to the cooking. Standard southern food with some mediocre baked items. About twice as expensive for sit-down dinners as it should be. Oh and its really cool that they yell at you and herd you like cattle through the buffet--so folks told me. The meat portions at the buffet are laughable. Most people don't seem to notice in carb heaven. I think the same owners run Teds. I think that place is a better meat and three experience all things considered (location, crowd, price).

Delicious food we ate way too much; we tried the Cajun catfish, fried chicken, tilapia and yeast roles were superb. A++ lemon pie was to die for. Great service and wonderful casual atmosphere.

Nikki's offers delicious, generous portions of southern cuisine. Some of my favorites include the fried tilapia/flounder, liver and onions, and the succotash. Definitely one of my go-to spots in Birmingham and with consistently good food and great customer service, it never disappoints!

If you're into Picadilly style line buffets this one is worth checking out. I get the feeling some of these people have been working here since the 70s. I had the four veggie plate which consisted of white beans, turnip greens, and some kind of rice and broccoli salad. At the end of the line there were some fresh jalapeños which I couldn't resist. My fourth veggie was some bread pudding. The food tasted great! The beans were point on, the greens were full of the right kind of flavor, even though the broccoli salad was a little cold it was good too. The bread pudding. Oh man. It was interesting. I like mine a little more solid, but it was rich with flavors of nutmeg and cinnamon. It was a tad on the heavy side, but it made a great desert. Over all it was an above average experience for this type of restaurant.

This is a Birmingham tradition and a place I had not been to in many years. Well, it is a thirty mile round trip for us, and, that is $7.00 you have to add to the meal price. Plus, there are better meat and 3's that are closer and in much better areas. Okay, the area is a rundown area that I would not venture in after dark. The restaurant looks as if it has not been updated or remodeled since it opened in 1957. I am sure they probably have had to do some updates in the kitchen and steam table, but the restaurant itself appears to be unchanged. Having written that, the eatery has some real charm. There are waitresses like I used to see when I was growing up and you have down-home food. It is really warm and comforting, just a bit shabby. I had the fried chicken cutlet, mashed potatoes, dressing, fried eggplant and a roll. That roll was the best. I mean it was really good. Everything tasted as if made in house. The potatoes were fresh, but, for me, dry and a bit overly stiff. Dressing was pretty good, but the eggplant was battered and fried in chunks. I like it sliced, just like green tomatoes. The chicken was acceptable and crisp, but not flavorful like a real piece of chicken, bone in. I would not get the eggplant or potatoes again. And, this was too much food. I would suggest forgoing the meat or getting just one or two vegetables with the meat. The employees were friendly and efficient and I saw no sign of bad attitudes. This place does some business, so if you get there between 11:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. you will have a lot of company, although the line moves really quickly. I suggest getting there a bit after 1:00 P.M. and you will have very little wait time in line. If you have never been here, you should definitely go at least once. It is an experience not to be missed.

I'm giving this place a 5 star review and with enthusiasm. This place is truly everything I imagine a 'Meat and three' to be in the South. This was my first visit for a lunch and I can only imagine breakfast would be off the chain. Nothing fancy about this cafeteria style line buffet. Upon arrival, there will be no less than 25 people standing in line in front of you. Not to worry. No less than a dozen servers politely stand ready to serve you any of the dozen main course meat dishes. Fish, meatloaf, chicken, ribs...I could go on and on. Generous portions and then you get a choice of an ungodly amount of vegetables, salad, rolls and desert. And of course you gotta be asking for sweet tea. If you are from out of town and have never been to this establishment or are not familiar with this style of restaurant, you gotta check this place out. I got out of here for around 12 bucks including the tip. And I didn't eat the rest of the day.

This place is awesome! The line of food options is endless, and everything is homemade! The giant yeast rolls and desserts are delicious too. I had the Greek chicken which was fantastic. My only complaint is not being able to eat more!

Niki's is not a fancy restaurant, but what it does it does very well and deserves its good reputation as a southern cafeteria-style restaurant. We arrived about 11:30AM and the parking lot was already packed. There was a line at the counter but it moved quickly. In fact, I felt rushed to make split decisions on what meat and sides I wanted. They have three types of greens: collard, turnip, and something else I can't remember. Fried tomatoes. Fried mushrooms. Etc. Real southern cookin'. And, tasty. I was particularly impressed by the apple cobbler--a cheap side--with its wonderful taste, good amount of apples, and crunchy crush. My friend was equally impressed by the chocolate pie. In any case, we sat ourselves down and the waitress was very good at filling and refilling our drinks. We overheard many interesting locals conversing and had a pleasant and memorable experience. The price was a little more than I wanted to spend, but okay. This is great for what it is.

The food is pretty good, but the thing they do best is handle large groups. Their service is EXCELLENT with large groups. It's where my roommates and I (with our families) went after college graduation because we knew they would be able to handle the group. Food favorites are the tea, mac and cheese, and any of the pies or cakes.

Gets my 5 stars!! Not just meat & 3 more like 8 meats & 20 vegs, 6 cobblers, 6-7 salads. The best!! Walk through type cafeteria line. Owners are brothers(one if not both are always there) they know how to throw down southern style vegs. I've NEVER been let down at this place from food or service. Lunch time always packed by locals but they can move you through in a matter of minutes. My nick name for it is Fat Finley's! Restaurant sits across street from farmers market on Finley ave.

  • Sarrah F.

This place was awful. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from a box and had no flavor. The Lima beans were also lacking flavor. The sodas were all flat and you were only allowed one refill even though the glasses are quite small. Beware that the management refuses to refund any money for sides that you do not like even if you do not consume them. We came from out of town to eat here and were quite disappointed. I do not recommend this place at all!

On a business trip to Alabama I found myself eating here almost every other day. The service is great, the food is even better and beers are served in the can! Prices are very reasonable and I'll be missing this establishment for certain when I return home to California.

This restaurant is last meal worthy. If you want a true taste of "Sunday dinner" in the south you can get it here everyday (except Sunday). As a local I make sure all out of town guest take the plunge into this amazing restaurant. 30 years loyal and counting.

I have not stopped by my beloved Niki's West for a couple of years due to living out of state and in few different places after graduating from college. I enjoyed lunch there yesterday and the food is still amazing! It is my golden standard for a meat and three or just veggies out of all of the available restaurants in Birmingham for a variety of reasons. The first is because the staff and management are always welcoming and make you feel like family. They engage in friendly and casual talk every time that I've stopped by since 2005. The second but not least is the delicious Southern home-styled food and the consistent quality and taste of all sections. Yesterday, I had a bit of food overload and got a to-go selection of blackened tilapia, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, fried mushrooms, fried green tomatoes, rutabagas, creamed corn, and roll. I sampled about 1/3 of the food that I ordered and everything was mmm mmm good! I will enjoy the rest of my left overs within the next two days. If you love Southern food and visiting Birmingham - stop by Niki's because you will not regret it!

It is a cafeteria, and soooooo cheap. We had 2 mains and 5 sides, cornbread and 2 desserts for about 25 dollars! being a newbie to southern food, I wanted a good variety. This isn't a fancy place or anything, and I bet this is the type of place where seniors come weekly during a lunch hour, to give you an idea or the type of establishment... Great service and everyone was patient while we were trying to select our sides. Sweet tea was always filled. Delicious and must try at least once.

One of my family's favorite place, for many years. To go is fun, tradition, and guaranteed good Southern(US)-and-also-Greek food. Standing in the cafeteria style line reminds me of being in a scene from Seinfeld. Because once you're up, you better be ready to order or else you're going to get some looks-that-kill and they're going to insist you hurry up. On the other hand, there's almost always a line and as long as you're respectful of everyone's time, they are super nice. I usually ask the gentlemen working behind the line what their favorites are among the ka-zillion items available, and I'm almost always pleased with their recommendations. But when they give you a recommendation, be ready to take it and GO on down the line to the next gentleman. The place has great food, nice wait staff, and a nostalgic atmosphere. Nothing fancy. But plenty of culture and experience. My great-grandparents liked this place, my grandparents, my parents, me and my sister, and now my nieces. Go... but be prepared to keep returning for generations like my family and I.

The best "meat and three" in town! This is my go to for comfort food. The Greek Chicken is absolutely perfect. The beef stew is amazing too and I also really love the country fried steak which is more like a cube steak. Their meats change daily so make sure to check their website to see what they are offering. Looking for a fancy dinner? You can also order off of their menu instead of the cafeteria line. They have some of the most amazing steaks and seafood the city has to offer in a totally amazing and "old-school" atmosphere.

Old school cafeteria style dining experience in Birmingham. I always enjoy indulging in the local flavor, especially if it means home style Southern cooking, but I found the food here to be just okay. The roasted chicken was good for a leg/thigh combo. The brussel sprouts and broccoli were good - would've been better if they weren't swimming in a bath of butter, and the cornbread dressing was a bit on the mushy side. All in all, about what you would expect from a cafeteria. Two and a half stars for the food, with an extra half for the friendly service.

Southern perfection It's busy, and noisy, and has an odd eclectic Greek theme but if you love classic southern vegetables, fried catfish and homemade pie you'll love this place. The waitress told us some of the cooks have been here for 30 years and a few of them for over 40. I believe it - They've got it right I tried a sampling of all their vegetables and seriously they were all perfect. Get extra and the get some take home boxes

Southern Food with a Greek flair served Steam-Table/Cafeteria style. Niki's West is one of the old school of Birmingham dining. I have eated here lots of times and never had a less than impressive experience. I would say that you have not completely taken in Birmingham's dining optionf without a trip to Niki's West. Im looking forward to my next trip.

Tried it out while visiting Birmingham on business in that area. Big crowd but after trying the Greek chicken and vegetables I see why. Huge number of friendly people working there with many choices of items for lunch. Though it was a little pricey I will definitely head back if I am in the area

We ate here tonight with a family of 5. Nothing fancy but a real classic. Our bill was around $90.00. There is the option of service via steam line or table service. We did table service because most of our party wanted steak or seafood. Would love to come back and try the steam line next time. The Niki's cole slaw is a must. Shredded cabbage with a dressing that resembles Catalina but is sweet and tangy. Terrific! The house salad with Greek dressing received high marks as well. Hot rolls were gigantic and wonderful. Cinnamon rolls were unbelievable. Main courses of steak and seafood were good. The fried chicken livers were super. The service was flawless and very friendly. Little Kathy was our server offering great direction on the menu and making us feel welcome. We really enjoyed this old school Birmingham gem. Give this place a try!

Just experienced Niki"s for the first time. It was recommends to us by locals. We were told to get Baked Greek Chicken, Mac n cheese, greens. Well I got Cajun Catfish, Mac n cheese and fried green tomatoes corn muffins. My spouse got the baked Greek chicken, creamed corn, Mac n cheese, yeast roll, and peach cobbler. EVERYTHING was so good! Only thing negative is peach cobbler is a tad bit too sweet. Well definitely go back!

We stopped driving from Missouri to Florida. Excellent food--especially the lemon icebox pie, but the experience is a bit overwhelming. The cafeteria line is long and it's hard to pick just three. I went with the veggie only plate and got collared greens, fried orka, mac-n-cheese and pie. My daughter loved the broccoli rice casserole. Luckily the line was not long so we weren't rushed. Worth the experience at least once.

My favorite Southern restaurant throughout the south. I wouldn't visit Birmingham without stopping here.

This place is great...The sign at the entry says you can't come in if you have rollers in your hair or are wearing a tank top so you know it's a classy joint! But for real, this is the freshest food you can find in Birmingham, cooked down-home-southern style with a Greek flare, extremely reasonably priced: $10-ish per person. One reason for its freshness is that it is located across from the area's fresh produce hub. It has been around for years while most all other similar establishments, (hair curlers or not!) in Birmingham are long gone, this one is the mainstay, and continues not to disappoint with food and local flavor. They have a serving line that has a choice matched by no other that I have seen for this type food. Also they have menu service too, which feature's Gulf seafood and steaks. Bottomless glass of fresh brewed iced tea, sweet or unsweet, and coffee. Corn bread or roll comes with all plates as well as a selection of fresh green peppers (hot and mild) slice onions and scallions. The decor is decidedly Southern-Greek, and I don't mean the south of Greece, but a mixture of influences of Birmingham and Greece. Kitschy ccol. Go for the food, smile at the decor. Service is attentive. Protocol for the serving line is to handle your tray of food until you are seated, unload the tray, the server takes drink orders and they take care of the mess. Tip accordingly. Leave room for salads and desserts.

I have been living in Northern Mexico for so long, I forgot what it was like not to have a Mexican influenced breakfast. I remember the days when I put Louisiana Hot Sauce on my fried eggs, and had sliced tomatoes with my first meal of the day. I was so happy. Anyway, I really like this place. I loved the fact my server called my honey, sweetie and baby within my first 5 minutes in the place. I like being greeted with a genuine smile, I love the accents, I loved it when my server gave a regular a hug when he came in. I hope to come back to Birmingham to eat dinner. Check this out, they have boiled new potatoes, okra and tomatoes, northern beans, lima beans, zucchini and tomatoes, seven layer salad, carrot and raisin salad, fried chicken livers and drum roll puh-leese..... My favorite liver and onions!!!!!!! This place is southern cooking, it would have even more street cred, if they served fried bologna sandwiches. But they do not need it. The atmosphere, along with the meal makes this place authentic. Not to mention the "No Rollers on the Head" sign. If that is not notice you are in the south, I do not know what is.

Southern cooking that's adequate. Truthfully, this place has been *much* better in previous years. It's buffet style and a huge one at that, probably the largest in Birmingham. The whole restaurant is a throwback to the 60s and 70s style of buffet, right down to the tables and chairs. You enter through a roped queue line like an amusment park ride, pick up your tray and silverware and are whisked through the buffet line by very polite servers. They can really handle a huge crowd very efficiently, and normally the food is very good. This trip, however, the speed of service unfortunately made its way back into the kitchen. My wife's fried green tomatoes had a few that were stuck together and underdone (which is criminal here in the South) and my cornbread dressing was lukewarm with a cold spot in the center. Let the servers deal with the crowd and get the kitchen back running the way it was in the hey dey - slow cooked and steamin hot. The rest of the meal was fine, however, with a very notable fried pork chop and tender pot roast. Desserts are good but a bit overpriced and tend to be over seasoned (just a *little* too much nutmeg in the custard pie there, guys). All in all, it's worth the trip, especially if you've never been to this Birmingham landmark.

I must say. This is the perfect example of why food reviews matter and why they don't. In this case, it's why they don't. Niki's got like 4 and 1/2 stars. Decided to check it out. Place was packed. It's cafeteria-style. Long lines but line does move very quickly. Large assortment of food and sides to choose from. Down home southern food. Fried pork chops, rice and gravy, mashed potatoes, cornbread, greens, baked fish, lima beans, shirt ribs, etc.... All the things southern people love to eat. But the food was so bland. I got fried pork chops, and fried chicken. It had no taste at all. Mashed potatoes had to be from a box with no milk added. Oh my goodness. But nevertheless the line was long, not to mention it was lunchtime also. If u know what good food tastes like and I'm pretty sure that most people think they do; even though they don't, don't go here, you will be disappointed. BUT THE LINE WAS STILL LONG?!?!

Meatloaf appeared very popular as many customers were getting it today. Today, I had the Baked Greek chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens, and apple cobbler. The apple cobbler was as good as I have always remembered it. The mashed potatoes were as expected. The collard greens did not feel as well cooked as previous times. The baked Greek chicken was hot and good. A fresh pot had just come out when we arrived so I grabbed some. The line was moving quickly today given it was lunch hour and crowded - it still took less than 10 min to funnel through the cafeteria line.

The food is fresh and very good most days, and the other reviews cover it mostly, but i wanted to point out to those who are sensitive to it or have dietary restrictions - WAY TOO MUCH SALT. I've been coming here since I was a kid and still take my grandparents and kids here, so I obviously love it, but just thought folks needed to know that.

Great old fashioned cafeteria with a large selection of meats and vegetables. Recommend the salmon patties! Service was excellent!

Holy crap. All I have to say is I have never had fried green tomatoes and if I am ever within 200 miles of Niki's, I am going to drive there simply for the fried green tomatoes. I mean seriously. I haven't tasted something so completely AMAZING in quite some time. The greek fish is the bomb, the collard greens are perfect and they have this killer cucumber tomato salad that is very greek and light when eating all that BBQ. The pepper vinegar on the table is the best. Douse everything you order with some of that. The place gets PACKED during the day, but is so worth the wait. I highly recommend the fried tomatoes. Oh and the okra isn't bad either.

Yelp led me here while road tripping through the US. It was my first time in the south and I wanted to try something that I don't get back in California. So I got the seafood platter at Niki's. I got the platter fried (rather than broiled or greek-style) and chose friend okra and fried green tomatoes as my sides. Yeah, I overdid the fried food, and wish I'd gotten the platter broiled instead. Either way, I remember loving the crab and scallops the most, along with the okra. And I had enough leftovers for lunch the next day, which made the $25 cost bearable. I'd go back for sure, and this time try it broiled :)

Maybe I didn't order the right things but not really impressed. From the cafeteria line I chose baked Greek fish which was salmon with tomatoes. I did like it. My two sides were broccoli and green beans. Broccoli was good, steamed fresh but then soaked in way too much fake butter. Same with the bean but they were from a can. Gumbo was homemade but bland. And the pie was awful. I thought the guy said 'eclair pie' but all I could taste was cloves. Like I said maybe my choices were bad. The line moved pretty quick and there were a ton of business people on lunch so it obviously has a good reputation. I don't think I will be back but if I was I would have stuck to basic comfort food and had lower expectations.

It is because of restaurants like this that I am glad I decided to leave Alabama once I finished college. If I would have stayed, I would be about 300 lbs. right now and I don't think that would be a good look for me. In town for a wedding, my guy arrived before me and he and a few friends went to Niki's for lunch. Since they couldn't stop talking about how good it was, I demanded that he take me the next day so I could see what all the fuss was about--and he happily obliged. As we were about to walk into this cafeteria-style eatery, we couldn't help but take a picture of the sign on the door: No Tank Tops, No Bare Feet, No Rollers in the Head. Since we were in compliance, we shuffled on in, grabbed a tray and eagerly waited our turn in line. When we finally were able to see the food to make our choices, I heard angels singing! BBQ pork, fried chicken, catfish, baked chicken, liver with onions and gravy, baked macaroni and cheese, collard and turnip greens, cheese grits, black eyed peas, dressing and gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, peach cobbler, stewed apples, bread pudding and banana pudding. Lawd HAMmercy on my soul! I was told my eyes got big as saucers as I took in all this amazement and then I carefully made my decision: Fried chicken, mac and cheese, cheese grits, turnip greens, salad and peach cobbler (with lots of crust) and sweet tea, of course. Everything was simply magical. My guy got the catfish, grits and corn bread and then proceeded to tease me mercilessly about all the food I had on the table. I really didn't care because I don't get to eat like this all this time. The guys serving the food were were very serious ( I heard they're part of a work-release program) but friendly, as well as everyone else who worked there. I didn't finish everything (my father always told me that my eyes are bigger than my stomach) but I sure had fun trying!

One of my all time favorite places to eat. The list of what's good here is as long as their steam table (and that's pretty long.) Any time I'm in Birmingham lunch at Niki's West is a MUST.

Sad to say I haven't had really good southern food since I moved to the south. I know they say Atlanta is the capital of good cuisine especially the southern variety but I have yet to run into a place that really blew me away. My mom was in the hospital so that's what brought me to Birmingham & to Niki's for lunch. Niki's serves a good old fashion southern meal. The place has been open since 1957 [so you can forgive the decor] but the food is on point. Went with the BBQ pork with mac & cheese and sweet peas [the put a little sugar in there sweet peas like all good southerners do :-) Not sure what the median age is for this place but someone my age should not expect to find a date here. So come for the food, stay if you can receive an AARP discount?

What a treat! Scooped up from the airport, my friend brought me to Niki's West for lunch. A sign upon entering warned against the shirtless, barefoot, and curler-haired. Ah, my first Alabama experience. Prepped in advance, I whizzed through the line like a pro ordering catfish (lemony goodness), fried green tomatoes (crisp and fresh), collard greens (insert O face), and mac-n-cheese. My friend got mushy peas (nicely seasoned) and black-eyed peas (yum). Topped off with a gallon of sweet tea served by very friendly ladies.

Great place for quick service & consistent quality of food. Niki's features a wide array of "meat & three" options. On any given day, there are 6-8+ meat options and 20+ veggie options. You may have a difficult time limiting yourself to one meat or three sides. If you arrive at a peak time (especially during lunch), you may be turned off by the long line. Don't get too comfortable checking your mail on your phone, though. Those guys serving you will breeze through the line faster than you expect. Try: Greek chicken, mac & cheese, stewed squash. (PS, you might not want to tell your Cardiologist about your visit)

Reasonably priced grub in an assembly line style reminiscent of Seinfeld's 'soup nazi' episode. Couldn't eat here every day - just too filling. Wanted a nap after this meal. Green beans were soaked in butter. Chicken was tasty.

  • Scott N.

As far as meat & three's, this is as good as it gets. The selection is mind-boggling and even when the line is out the door at lunch time, you'll still be seated with your food in minutes. It is a good place to take visitors to get an authentic, Alabaman-style lunch. The food is real heavy and carb-loaded, so don't plan to do much after eating. :)

Great Southern soul food. Everything I had was fabulous. The only complaint is the tense rush to order. I did feel like Jerry in The Soup Nazi. It is hard to choose a vegetable when you haven't seen ALL the vegetables. I can't imagine going through there with a child or with my grandfather.

I was introduced to Niki's West on a roadtrip. We stopped here to meet a friend of a friend who was a native Birminghamite (is that what they're called?). I liked the buffet-style soul food - you go through a cafeteria line and tell the servers what you want, then you pay for it on your way out. Most of it was quality southern food: greasy yet delicious. The danger of a cafeteria style place is that your eyes are often bigger than your stomach. Don't order when you're hungry, though- my friend did and he ended up buying around $20 worth of food and ate about half of it.

My dad and I ate here on our drive across country. The friend Green Tomatoes were AMAZING. I was able to find other good vegetarian options here that were tasty. The vibe was nice with a mix of people and friendly staff. A great lunch spot!

This is definitely the best food in Bham, IMHO!! Not only is the food fantastic but the parking is great, the service is great and the restaurant is HUGE so it can accommodate large crowds, which this place is known for. Your starndard Meat-n-3 with a modified menu for those who want more, like me. The desserts are out of this world. For instance, I got my 3 favorite desserts, chocolate cream pie, banana pudding and peach cobbler and all 3 were the best I've had anywhere! I will be dreaming of this place until I am able to go back again soon! Can't wait!!
