I've yet to try a menu item from Mellow that I didn't like! I've had almost every pizza, sandwiches, calzones, and soup (tomato bisque rocks) and I have no complaints. The handmade pretzels are delicious, as well. Yes, it takes a little longer to get your food, but everything is made and baked fresh to order. I'll happily wait a few more minutes for that. Not to mention, there's a great atmosphere, & plenty of TVs to keep you entertained. The wait staff has always been fantastic - especially TJ at the Inverness location. Don't listen to the naysayers and check out Mellow Mushroom for yourself! It's not the typical fast food, greasy pizza delivery place. But that's what makes it better!

Although one may feel that one is paying extra for the hippy atmosphere, I think the MM offers something needed in the Birmingham community. It has real vegetarian options, tofu, fake cheese, hummus, etc. I thought the pizzas were quite good and the outside seating was pleasant. I would like to visit it more often, but the price is prohibitive.

Best pizza chain ever. Plus this location is right in Five Points. After going here several times, as well as other pizza places nearby, it's safe to say this is my number one choice for delicious pizza in South Side.

Went here for lunch with a group of people because we were all in the mood for pizza and Mellow tends to make a good pie. The service was slow (even though the place was empty), but the food was up to par with other Mellow Mushrooms I've been to. The waitress even split the checks correctly in spite of one of my group screwing it up when he described it to her. My only minor complaint is that they didn't have a lunch menu per se. Overall this is a decent place. Nothing popped, but nothing was horrible either. I'd come back.

Never would of thought that a Pizza Restaurant would have so many Vegan options, but Mellow Mushroom blew me away. The 5pts location is very well decorated and has a nice patio to enjoy the sights and sounds of Southside while you eat. After picking up a business associate from the airport i wanted to show him the sights and sounds of Birmingham; which he had never been here before. The 5pts area is the heart of Birmingham's night life and I needed to find a restaurant to entertain while catering to my diet. I remembered that Mellow Mushroom has a Vegan Pizza, but after seeing the menu I found numerous other options to choose from. For starters I went with the Hummus appetizer. You have the option of house made pita chips or fresh vegetables. I choose the veggies. I found that the vegetables were really fresh and very flavourful and the Hummus was very well done as well. For my entrée I went with a salad. The really nice thing you can do here is customize your entire salad. I picked Spinach and Romaine lettuce for my base and then went crazy from there. My toppings were as follows: tofu, apple slices, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, bell peppers, and onions. This made for a monster salad and a very healthy meal. I look forward to coming back a leaving a review for their Vegan pizza soon when I come back for lunch and can consume more carbs.

Always good pizza all the time. It's great to come here after you had your fair share of developing drunk munchies over at World of Beer. A small pizza is good enough for me. Get the chicken wing sampler. It's small enough that you still have room for pizza but enough that you get a good taste. The house special is always good. You can't go wrong with any pizza here but that's because as long as my pizza has a side of marinara and cheese, I like them all. Pickier eaters may have a harder time in this place because there's so many different ways you can have it your way here.

I loved living down the street from mellow mushroom in back in Austin, so after moving I was super excited to find out there was one right down the road from where I work. The pizza is always good- hot, fresh, the crust is just how I like it and you can literally have them make it just the way you want. Aside from pizza, the Greek salad is delicious, and the enlightened spinach salad is my favorite. I like the vibe of the place, it's laid back, the decor is cool, & our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The only negative throughout the entire experience was that the lady who seated us seemed annoyed that we wanted a booth instead of a table, but hey, we want what we want. If you like pizza (and who doesn't?), I'd stop by and check it out.

I loved this place so much! The atmosphere is so trippy and wonderful. There are dragons on the walls, and so many colors. We created our own pizza, and it was the best pizza we've ever had. Our server Kat was so awesome! I loved the experience.

I am not really sure what the fuss is about. I've had MM pizza years and years back and never thought it was anything special. Today I was reminded why. My friend and I ordered the Daley special pizza..chicken, bacon, pineapple, pepperoni, cheese, red sauce. The best thing about the pizza was the crust. The bacon was mostly fat and soggy. Gross to the max. The chicken tasted like previously frozen thawed in the microwave chicken. Everything else on it was ok, but the crust was great. I had ordered a salad, but when the pizza came and still no salad I asked to cancel. She seemed surprised. I dunno, maybe salads are eaten for dessert here. I also ordered a cookie to take home to my boyfriend...looked ok. But it was topped with cream. And as soon as I walked outside it looked like a giant semen cookie because its freaking 97 degrees. I hope he enjoys his sex cookie. For a mediocre pizza, two teas and a cookie.... not really worth 30 bucks.. but whatever.

In college and pharmacy school my friends and I would occasionally go down to the Five Points area for a night out on the town, and often times we would start out at the Mellow Mushroom. I remember it being a really happening place...always a wait to get a table, but there's a bar so you can always have a drink while you wait. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and the outdoor was fun because you can people watch while you're eating. Good pizza from what I can recall, good calzones as well. I had a salad a few times (WHY at a pizza place?? I use much better judgment these days!), and I recall it being decent and pretty big. I'd love to go back there one of these days, just to see if it's as good as I remember. Parking was a general issue in that area, especially at night and on the weekends, but once you found a spot you were good to go for the rest of the night. There are lots of pubs, clubs, bars within walking distance, so it's a great place to fill your belly before seeing what kind of trouble the night may bring!

By far my favorite pizza chain that I can get in most bigger cities. Of course the prices are higher because this is not your cheap, frozen pizza or delivery joint. I will gladly put out the money for this pizza. They also have great other things from salads to sandwiches and appetizers and desserts. I've never gone wrong here. And it's a super chill atmosphere; very down-to-Earth folk usually.

Mellow Mushroom is a great eat! Really chill atmosphere, comfortable, great service, even better food. Any kind of pizza you can imagine, can be created! It has lots of vegetarian options, for those that prefer it, as well as gluten free options. This place is a chain, which I normally try to stay away from when traveling; however, for the Mellow Mushroom, this time I made an exception!

Went here one night just for drinks. I found the service to be slow. They did change the tv channel for us so we could watch the Bears game. I ordered rootbeer float. It was 6 buck and consisted of one scoop of boring ice cream and a bottle of rootbeer. I thought it was plain and over priced. My co workers order beer but it took them 3 times to pick a beer that they actually had. My other co worker order bottled water and they were out of that too.

On top of great pizza and great beer selection, this store has great customer service. I filed a complaint through their website assuming i'd never hear anything back but instead received a call from the store manager explaining the situation and giving me an opportunity to come back to the store and make it right. Excellent job retaining customers and as always, great pizza. This kind of customer service is lost in most restaurants these days.

Well the atmosphere is great and it is a good place to bring the kids. Service was ok but it could be improved with a warm, friendly smile here and there. The pizza was good but the children's meatball dinner was tiny to say the last. She enjoyed every bite but was left hungry for more. These should be listed as toddlers meals. The kids calzone was huge though and there were two of them. I couldn't believe the portion difference in the two. If you go and you have a child that is a healthy eater, stick to the calzone. It was a good meal and the prices were reasonable. Parking was fine when we went on a Saturday afternoon.

My sweetie and I are pizza connissoueurs. Or so we like to call ourselves. He introduced me to Mellow Mushroom about two years ago. Since then it has become one of our regular pizza stops. We usually order the large sausage and pepperoni. The crust is the best part of the pizza. It's rubbed with a buttery, garlic flavor that gives it just the right pizazz. The only thing to dislike about the place is the lack of parking. But it's not their fault. This area is notorious for that. Ambience: Cool and eclectic

The bruschetta was excellent! Pappy, our waiter was a very knowledgable and interesting fellow. We will go back, and they have a great selection of beer!

This is a franchise chain so I'll keep this review brief. This is my very first time eating at a Mellow Mushroom anywhere. Go figure? This location is in the Five Point neighborhood, and it fits in nicely with the other "cool" restaurants and bars in the area. We sat outside, and were annoyed by several flies that we had to constantly shoo away. My wife and I shared a medium Funky Q. Chicken pizza, and our daughters ordered their own small pizzas. One had the Kosmic Karma, and the other ordered the Buffalo Chicken pizza. We all agreed that the crust was wonderful. It was the perfect thickness, and it was crunchy on the outside and just chewy enough. I rate the crust five stars! I did not care for the Funky Q. Chicken. It wasn't bad; I just thought the barbeque sauce was too sweet and the ingredients were not very memorable. The girls enjoyed their pizzas, and everyone took home leftovers to enjoy the next day. MM offers approximately 40 different draft and bottled beers. I had a Yuengling draft, and it was $3 during happy hour. I give this Mellow Mushroom location a three star rating, but I think it has potential to be better. The crust is very good and with the right toppings, these pies could be excellent. Also, I think the pizzas are overpriced for what you get.

I've been to Mellow Mushroom many times and to many locations. They make delicious pizza, sandwiches, appetizers, and salads. Great for groups, children, dates, and college burnouts (it has a drug induced decor and a mellow vibe). Only complaint would be parking.

You know.....I expected better. This was my first time at this location and though the space is wonderfully rad, I was underwhelmed by the pizza. I'll give it another try...this time; however, it was the choice in pizza. Plus its a chain pizza joint and those are not on my list of favorites. The beer menu is vast...and now that I think about it, they pizza choices are as well- just gotta choose the right one! If you fail at choosing the right one, the beer and atmosphere will suffice enjoy

Can I give 6 stars? - c'mon Yelp, get with it! :) Mellow Mushroom is just plain awesome, and "mellow" is just the right word for it. My first experience with the place was back in Auburn during my college years, and friends and I loved going there b/c of the fact that the atmosphere and the staff were always "über-chill". No stress, no pretention - just great pizza, hoagies, etc. in a cool, comfortable package. Well, the 5 Points/Southside Birmingham location is no exception to the rule - the food's still "hit-the-spot" fantastic, and the scene is still very much chillastic (think String Cheese Incident or Bob Marley playing on the stereo in the kitchen, while cooks sing along with no reservation and patrons pay it no special attention, like it's almost mandatory). Some friends and I descended upon the place several days ago and spent the better part of a couple of hours there hangin' out, chattin' it up with each other and a couple of the servers (Sarah Nesbitt, personable award FTW), and getting our fill of a *meatstravagantic* pie and some phenom garlic cheese bread. We had a great time, and consistently do so whenever we decide to hit the double-M - the place is very much a fixture in our frequent sitcom of a life. :D So, final word - Mellow Mushroom, 5 Points/Southside - visit there, eat there, chill there, return there. That is all. :)

Slow and inattentive staff. We went when there were not a lot of patrons and still waited well over an hour for our food. We saw our waitress maybe twice in that time frame. Several other groups (2 or 3) were complaining also. This is the second time I have been there and it was more or less the same both times. The food for our party of 6 ranged from good to bad (the ruben is sized as if it is from the children's menu). The calzone was large, though nothing at all special. A few of the other subs were reported as 'good'.

I suppose the atmosphere of a chain is going to vary place to place, but the Mellow Mushroom in Five Points pales in comparison to the Tuscaloosa location. We went on a quiet Sunday evening and were seated readily, but had to wait quite a while to receive acknowledgement from a server, and that turned out to be a trend of the visit. My wife and I split an appetizer of garlic bread and shared a cheese calzone. The wait for the food felt even longer than normal at a Mellow Mushroom, despite the half-full restaurant. Once we got it, service was friendly and the food was delicious as always. Nevertheless, a "meh" rating is all our visit merited.

The bad review is due to not knowing this: You come to the Mellow Mushroom with the attitude that you would go to a classy Italian restaurant. The atmosphere is louder, goofier, and doesn't have the aroma of a classy restaurant, but the food, service, and prices are comparable. Do not come here expecting Little Caesars or Dominoes. You are going to pay more, wait longer, and get a much more generous and tasty reward for it.

Where do I begin? This place is terrible! We stopped here on our way back to TX. We were starving and looking for something quick and easy. ah-ha...PIZZA! Well, quick and easy it was not. Strike 1 - We were seated outside. After 15 mins of no service someone FINALLY came over. Strike 2 - We ordered garlic bread to start and we each order a small sandwich as our entree. The waiter told us that the sandwiches would take 20 mins. That's fine. Thanks for the heads up. Especially considering we will have garlic bread in front of us shortly. HA! 20 mins later we are starving because we never go the garlic bread. Our sandwiches arrived before the garlic bread. The only saving grace is that they comped the garlic bread! Strike 3 - Nausea for 2 days straight. YOUR OUT!

It was so wonderful to get greeted with a smiling face from the host to our waitress. The serves was wonderful and there was never a moment we felt like we needed something. Drinks were never empty and every need was met. The food was wonderful!!

The mellow mushroom is just that. A mellow little restaurant with a nice relaxing vibe. The food comes out piping hot and tastes really good to boot. If you're not that hungry they have a nice selection of smaller items as well as some tasty "beverages" to mellow you out even farther. The only downside is sometimes parking can be a pain. Other than that it's great.

The food was good, although the pizza crust was burned and tough. We ordered a large meat lover's pizza, two small side salads and a couple of cokes. Imagine my surprise when my tab came to the table and it was $54 (19% tip already included on my ticket)!! Could have gone somewhere really nice for that ticket amount. Don't plan to return.. That's just outa sight!! We wish them well.

Fun, friendly place for a pie- though I am a devotee of the calzones, and the garlic & parmesan pretzels. (Big, soft warm pretzels. Sometimes just *Slightly* underbaked, but I like them tat way.) One of my favourite afternoon stops is to visit the bar for a pint & the pretzels. Those stops are enhanced by the staff. They've always been very friendly & attentive. (Not to mention some of them are kinda cute, which doesn't damage the experience at all!) I'm happy to have this Atlanta-based chain in my neighborhood, and happier that this particular location is my favourite of any of them I've visited outside ATL. Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the gourment white pizza is quite tasty, and the beer selection is better than most pizza joints.

I adore Mellow Mushroom. I prefer the location on Valleydale near 280, but this one is great as well. GREAT vegan options, just remember to order your pizza without the butter and parm on the crust. They have tempeh, tofu, and vegan cheese. They can make the pretzels vegan for you. The pesto is not vegan, making the pesto tofu not vegan. I could eat there every. day. Try the hummus!

I ordered a large Gourmet White with jalapenos and bacon on half online tonight and chose to pick it up 40 minutes later... It is sooo yummy! I prefer the slice I ate with jalapeno and bacon to the regular Gourmet White slice I ate as well. It gives it that extra punch. Next time I'll order it without onions though. I also ordered cinnamon and honey pretzels but am so stuffed that I haven't indulged yet. I will write a follow-up review once I binge on them. The pizza is very good as it should be since the price range isn't a $5 Hot-N-Ready Little Caesars pepperoni. The crust is crunchy by the way and the pizza is flat; reminds me of NY style. My roommate recommended Mellow Mushroom to me and I will definitely pay it forward and go back. Next time I think I'll order the Kosmic Karma or Magical Mystery Tour. Two thumbs up!

So I randomly stopped here for lunch while visiting one day and I have to say they make the best pizza and subs...We ended stopping at another location the same weeked because it was sooo good. Great "bamma" tradition and a local favorite!
