Heads up: This review doesn't start out so great, but gets better as it goes... just like Lucy's. I had a meeting at Lucy's and was running five minutes late. As I pulled up, I realized the nearby parking lots were all privately owned. What's worse, is there is very limited street parking. All in all, I hunted for fifteen minutes and finally found a spot four blocks away. This is THE ONLY negative thing I can point out. As I walked in, I was courteously greeted with a smile by the girl behind the counter. For my drink, I didn't go fancy and decided on a large coffee. I was pleasantly surprised when she pointed out the several basic coffee choices were self serve. This eliminated any awkward delivery service or number system. I didn't expect to eat, but then saw the menu. The tuna salad on greens was inexpensive, so I decided to try it. They brought it to my table in a minute or two, again, with a smile. It was delicious. The coffee was great, the food was fantastic, and I was surrounded by friendly people with smiling faces. This far out weighed the parking issues.

Lucy's is a "must experience" Birmingham event. First of all, the food is splendicious-breakfast recommended is the famous MacLucy (veggie or carnivore), and lunches are divine. Their soups are fresh and sandwich companions are ultra tasty and a true treat. The ambiance is eclectic, moderne with coffee to pump your day. The energy here is positive and colorful--lots of brains and heart and soul folks come here....don't deny yourself. Lucy ROCKS.

Went to meet a rather brilliant neurobiologist here for a quick lunch to chat about creating a fun CMYE series called "Nerd Night." Of course Lucy's was the perfect backdrop for this conversation because of its proximity to the various research centers at UAB. Filled to the brim with folks in scrubs and/or surrounded by laptops and books, I felt immediately at ease (yet somehow under-brained). I ordered the chicken salad plate (chicken salad on a bed of mixed greens) and an iced coffee. They were both promptly delivered to our perch on an L-shaped couch in the back corner as we chatted about how to best combine alcohol fueled happy hours and science outreach. Not gonna lie, this was an awesome day with an even more awesome conversation. And, to top it all off, the chicken salad was delicious!!! Pulled chicken combined perfectly with pecans, dried cranberries, and tarragon... they even gave me a little cup of vinaigrette to put on it that was only 1/4 full (aka a proper serving of vinaigrette, not the boatloads usually included with salads). I left feeling smarter and full. One issue to consider when going to Lucy's if you are NOT already at UAB or a nearby business: the parking is difficult to say the least. Plan to spend a minimum of five minutes locating a spot and then walking to Lucy's. It's worth it!

They have the best brownies in probably the world. Staff is always very helpful and sweet. The coffee is excellent, and it's a nice atmosphere to sit and get some work done, and chat with a few friends. The walls are decorated with locals artists work that you can purchase!

You have got to stop in and try Lucy's Coffee and Tea! This place is awesome! The staff is uber friendly, like I honestly cannot get over how friendly they were. It was refreshing in light of declining customer service :) I really enjoy a good sandwich and soup and this place really delivered. I ordered a whole turkey panini - I couldn't get over how much meat this panini had, really a great value. I couldn't finish the entire panini)...this may have also been because I had a brownie before my sandwich came out - delicious! Really great value for your money. It has a really cozy neighborhood feel kind of vibe. The interior is kind of small and it seems to get busy with UAB folks around the noon hour. There are couches and small tables that are perfect for enjoying a lunch while doing a little work or reading. You can tell that they go the extra mile to get to know their customers and seem to have a lot of regular. Loved this place and will definitely return!

Such a quaint nook perfect for coffee, tea, small breakfasts & creative paninis. The staff is so friendly. I ordered half chicken melt/half mediterranean(out of curiosity) and was charged a whole panini though I ordered two completely different halves. I love options & not being charged extra for stepping outta the box. Total price is compatible with surrounding establishments...which is more than I'd like to pay for lunch overall, but who's complaining when there was nothing ro brown bag from home.

1st visit. I love chocolate. Had a brownie and a Rocha Mocha- amazing coffee. Perfect touch of sweetness, but not too much. Neat atmosphere.

This place was a little hectic when I was there. It seems to be quite popular with UAB med students. And I think I was there during a lunch rush, which certainly changed the vibe. The most memorable part of the experience was watching Lucy work to make sure her guests were happy. I never knew about this place, and I have spent a lot of time in the area over the years. It's really easy to drive by, but I will definitely visit again. I love to support people who act like they want my business.

In town for business and needing to kill a few hours prior to meetings at UAB. Nice little coffee house, good coffee, friendly people and good atmosphere to do some work.

Cute, small sandwich and coffee shop right by UAB. Found it on Yelp. Fast & friendly service in this bustling lunch spot. I ordered the chicken salad on croissant and their home brewed tea. Chicken salad was a refreshing new twist with tomato, lettuce and pecans. I found it savory instead of the tendency to be sweet with other recipes. They offer wifi and a cozy coffee shop setting. I would like to return and try more sandwiches. Good solid lunch spot. Happy to find it.

Lucy's is a local coffee shop that serves the UAB community. It is convenient for people there, but parking is horrendous for those driving in to check the shop out. It took me about 20 minutes to find a parking space, and I had to park in the projects several streets down. (A guy tried to sell me drugs when I got out of my car.) Lucy's has a real homey and somewhat hippy-like atmosphere, with friendly staff, various people studying or reading, and some people eating lunch. The lunches looked really fresh and good. Prices seem reasonable. I tried just the Rocha Mocha, recommended by the lady at the cash register. It was a good but not remarkable coffee drink. This is a nice spot to hang out alone or with a friend. It's small. It has wi-fi. We sat down on a sofa there and had a nice conversation for a while and enjoyed watching people. I would like to stop by for lunch sometime, but don't feel like fighting to find a parking place.

Fun atmosphere, hospitable service, great coffee. They always get your food and drinks out quickly and somehow there's always space to work. Lucy and her staff are really great! I wish it was open on the weekends! I've only had bad service once when someone had an attitude when I asked what was in a scone.

See the Captain's yelp review. Ditto. Lucy's is a local, welcoming, and warm-your-heart establishment. It is a must do when you're in town. Make sure you have time to hang out, read a magazine, and soak up some real Southern hospitality.

Lucy's is right around the corner from my work building and is my go-to locale for a midday pick-me-up. The staff are genuine, kind and always (always!) positive. The snacks are yummy, the coffee drinks expertly crafted (though look elsewhere if you want to instagram you latte art) and the lunch paninis are consistently delicious. It can get crowded at lunch time so I usually go at off peak times to avoid the dreaded table vulturing. Note: I've never tried to access this place by car but I imagine parking would be a beast... Walk or bike if you can help it. Random Bonus: they have the Girl Scout cookie hook-up .... During GSC season you can order and pick-up at Lucy's and, in my experience, delivery was super fast : uber convenient for those of us out of touch with local scouts.

Right around the corner and fabulous panini's keep Lucy's high up on my lunch rotation - faves are the Mediterranean, the turkey, and the veggie. The tomato chutney is marvelous and I usually ask for it instead of aioli. I'm not a coffee-drinker, but am seriously addicted to their mango iced tea. The place is funky and friendly, with local art on the walls and a bookcase for reading and swapping in a back alcove. The crowd is so diverse and interesting that I've always thought I could gain IQ points just by spending a lunch hour eavesdropping!

The coziest spot at UAB. Lucy's is just a couple of blocks from my building and it's my go to for a pick-me-up coffee or a quick lunch with friends or co-workers. Fun decor and fabulous food round out the experience so nicely that I always leave in a better mood than I arrive. This is a favorite!

I love Lucy's! The soups are always changing and make a great light meal. The paninis will fill you up if you're feeling more ravenous. The staff is made up of some of the friendliest people in Birmingham. I also like how they have self-serve coffee when you need your caffeine fix and in a hurry. The old-fashioned pre-pay tab on the chalk board is very convenient for those of you who don't like using a credit card every time you pay for a coffee.

I came to visit UAB for a conference as a vegetarian and didn't love any of the lunch options in the area. Until I came here. The veggie panini was amazing and delicious. I would recommend to anyone in town.

Coffee is excellent, McLucy sausage, egg and cheese biscuit is tasty and atmosphere is awesome. Their menu selection has quite a bit of food and home baked breads, etc that you'd usually find in a pastry shop. Super friendly staff, including Lucy herself and the inside is exactly how you'd picture a cool coffee shop to look like.

Great place. Not a full 5 but for sure a 4.5. Nice smiling friendly people, pretty colorful place, service is fast so line doesn't build up that bad not even at noon on dot. Probably 90% of their business is about sandwiches that are carefully done with great consistency. Soup of the day is a good bonus to add. Coffee is not the best in town but definitively a good one. Menu doesn't look changing so much in time, that makes the rating not a full 5 starts. Probably the bets place where to get a sandwich around UAB area. One of my favorites

Great vibe, friendly service, and good coffee. I just wish it were closer to the main UAB academic buildings! Definitely better than the Starbucks in Sterne Library.

Convenient to UAB so that earns it an extra star right off the bat. The tomato chutney on the turkey panini is unmatched. I love the atmosphere; very laid back, comfy coffee shop feel. They have different artwork on the walls every few weeks. There are quaint mismatched tables and chairs and a few couches to relax and enjoy some great food and drink. Great service. Not good for groups, it's a pretty small place inside.

Finally got myself across town to Lucy's for lunch last week - and it was definitely worth the walk! As other reviewers noted, parking is not ideal for this little hole-in-the-wall coffeeshop, but the staff, atmosphere, and food make up for that minor blemish on the location. I was greeted with a cheery "hello!" by the guy sitting behind the register, and after mentioning that it was my first time to visit and I'd heard they had good paninis, he gave me an enthusiastic run-down of why Lucy's paninis would beat the pants off any chain restaurant's paninis any day. I asked about the coffee selection, and he pointed me in the direction of the little coffee bar in the corner: house roast, dark roast, and a rotating flavor in vacuum pots with stacks of variously sized to-go cups behind them. I ordered a BLT panini and a regular coffee (friendly chap pointed me to the cups and said to refill whenever). A dark roast struck my fancy, so I filled, er, almost filled up on it, killing the pot in the process. I notified the barista of the unfortunate event, and they had a fresh pot out to replace the empty one in a matter of minutes. Coffee and a Weld magazine in hand, I read at one of the several tables around the shop while I waited for my panini. The meal came promptly and was *delicious* - and the barista remembered my name t'boot, so kudos for that. The coffee was alright, but not stellar, so if you're looking for a spot just for coffee, there are other better spots, but Lucy's nails it with great service and scrumptious food. Overall a good spot for lunch, and after my experience I definitely know why it's a hit on the UAB campus. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the mood for a longer walk and more leisurely lunch this summer.

not too much competition in the area, definitely a cute, friendly neighborhood coffee shop with a personalized feel (looks like the chalkboard has tabs for regular customers?). i arrived late afternoon so no good food choices left - sandwiches only made during lunch hour, only a few sad baked goods left, but drink choices sounded delightful.

Located across Univ. Blvd. from the UAB Administration building. Next to Becky's burger joint, the Wing place and Subway, so pretty convenient. Very hipster, but like most things hipster, has that ironic mediocre feeling to core of the business: I could have settled for a Dunkin Donuts near the lab, but maybe I'll get karma points for supporting a mom-and-pop store.

I remember Lucy when she was still hanging on the corner with her coffee cart. Starbucks look out. Nice atmosphere, yummy baked goods. I love the way it's evolved. Good show, Lucy!

Really like how cheap their coffee is and they have flavored varieties :) Best thing though was their club paninni. That thing was out-of-this-world good.

Great coffee, good food, friendly folks working there, who will know your name if you come in a couple of times. Competence in coffee shopping, and they survived a predator Starbucks moving in next door. The 20th anniversary of Lucy's is this week, February 15, 2013. They've earned their staying power. Soups fresh daily, also the cookies and that sort of munchies are baked in the morning before the opening. Many choices of sandwiches, possibly made up on the spot if you push it a little.

This gem-of-a-place won a battle against Starbucks! That should say something about how much the UAB med. ctr. area has been relying on Lucy's coffee and doesn't intend to stop any time soon!!! Great sandwiches, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Lucy personally gets up at 4am daily to bake pastries and such for the day--something I was very impressed with.

I love that they have flavored coffee (mocha, hazelnut, french vanilla). The coffee is not burnt like starbucks. Their sandwhiches are HUGE and tasty. Excellent pastries. Overall, best coffee in the UAB Hospital area!

Everything you would want from a locally run and owned coffee shop. Great pastries, good food, fantastic coffee, wi-fi, and a comfortable environment. I completely agree with other reviews in that my only complaint is that they aren't open on the weekends. There really isn't a decent substitute for Lucy's around town for your weekend study spot.

I'll say upfront that I'm a fan of Starbucks, mostly because they actually make reliably good coffee. I feel if you're going to be a coffee shop you should at the very least brew a good cup of coffee otherwise just call yourself a free wifi stop with some tastees to boot. So Starbucks is the yardstick I use to measure coffee shops based on coffee quality. I always prefer to buy local as long as it's 1. convenient and 2. tastes good.. so that should give about every other coffee shop a leg up on the 'bucks. I've tried a couple of other coffee shops in the vicinity and wasn't a big fan of their hot brown caffeinated water (I drink dark roasts so perhaps I'm missing out on something else?). That being said, Lucy's brews a great cup of coffee (almost as good as Starbucks.. sorry that's as painful to write as I'm sure it is to read). Lucy's has a friendly staff and really nice atmosphere with eclectic decor. I'd choose going to Lucy's over Starbucks everyday of the week and twice on Sunday if only they were open on Saturday and Sunday.
