While in Birmingham on business, one of my associates who is local to the area suggested we go to Los Compadres for lunch. I don't recall what time we got there, but it was after the "usual" lunch time rush. We had a pretty big group but were the only people in the place at the time, so we expected to have great service. They were a little slow however and I think part of the problem was that the waitstaff were all back in the kitchen (apparantly watching some spanish-language soap opera from the sounds of it). The food was a-ok...nothing stood out as being really exciting or memorable, but it was very typical of what you would expect for a Tex-Mex place located in a strip shopping center. For the price point, it was a pretty good value.

I can sum up in 1 word. Meh! I was looking forward to returning to Los Compadres, I regularly dined here with co-workers many years ago. Even though I arrived early for the lunch crowd due to afternoon appointments and hoping to beat the crowd, I needn't have bothered. My first clue at this disappointment should have been the nearly empty restaurant. My second clue was the overwhelming cleaning chemical smell as was being seated. The final clue was after scouring the menu searching for the item I fondly remembered (Yucatecas) and resigned that was no longer on the menu, I found it under the appetizers. Chips where a mixture of somewhat fresh and not-so-fresh (not stale but unexpected considering the time and customer base). Salsa was average. Shredded chicken in the Yucatecas was bland with almost no seasoning, certainly not what I remembered. The seasoning and juiciness was what I thought the difference was between a quesadilla and Yucateca. Plate contained more lettuce that generally find in a salad at many places. While this made for a nice presentation, it just really took up space. I was never offered a refill and staff was only moderately attentive. With the number of choices of Mexican cuisine in the area, I doubt I will return.

Returned here and can comfortably solidify the previously stated 1 star review. Their renovation made the restaurant look a lot worse and everything was very run down. The service was terrible. Just please, don't go here.

I had the chicken quesadilla. It was too salty. Their alcohol is good though.

Been going here for years but since the new owners took over the service is horrible. Went here for lunch only five tables had people at them and it took us an hour to get our food. We won't be going back.

Worst margarita ever...served in a ?pint? glass? Terrible poblano peppers. Very disappointed. Given margaritas are probably the list profitable item...please get this one thing right. I won't return. Everything else was average.

The margaritas taste like dirty dish water, the food is bland and the service could be better.

Quiet little Mexican place that has good specials and kids eat free on Sundays. Perfect place if your looking for simple menu.

The food is ok. Service was great. Prices are reasonable. I had the steak yucatecas and the steak was awesome but salty. There is a 2 chip and salsa minimum per table. Any over that, and they charge you. I would go back.

Good food and reasonably priced. The steak quesadilla is very good. Good portion sizes. Would recommend.

This place is horrible. This is probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I had quesadillas that were made with what tasted like rubber steak and old cheese. The atmosphere is cold and not at all what a place like this should be. The restaurant is dirty; there were dead bugs on the window sill next to our booth, the menu had a hair inside of it. The service was atrocious. Our waiter barely said 10 words to us the entire time. There has got to be better places than this. Taco Bell is better than this. Save your money and go elsewhere. Or go here and see for yourself. I won't be going here ever again.

Average Mexican food. Not much atmosphere. Not a bad experience but nothing special.

Oh no!! This was my all time fav Mexican restaurant during college. My friends and I ate here at least once a week, esp since they had great happy hour specials. It's been several years since I've eaten here (live and work in different area of town). I recently got a chance to dine here since I was meeting 2 friends who were coming from campus. The place is the same as I remember it but I noticed they've added outside seating. I ordered the cheese dip with ground beef...the consistency of the cheese was not thick at all. The flavor wasn't even the same as before! I wasn't too hungry and just ordered a shredded chicken taco and rice and beans. Los used to have the best spanish rice ever. It was moist and flavorful unlike the normal dried out rice. This time I got dried out rice, gone were the flecks of bell pepper and tomatoes that used to be in it! The beans didn't even have a the same coloring to them! I don't know what's gone on with the quality of the food! The shredded chicken was good. I hope this was just a bad night.

One of the best mexican restaurants in the birmingham area. Its right next to Payless shoe store. I would recommend the chicken, steak or shrimp fajita quesadilla for your lunch or dinner. Margaritas are great but try them during happy hour as you can get more for your money. Staff is friendly and plenty of TVs.

Chips and salsa were average. Tacos al carbon were delicious but the atmosphere was kind corny.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
