You shouldn't go to Ichiban expecting the fanciest place in the world. It's not dirty or gross, just not fancy. What you should expect is to be entertained and stuff with a great meal. Like most hibachi restaurants, all of the chefs at Ichiban are delightfully funny. Anyone who is willing gets to get behind the grill and try their hand at egg tossing, shrimp flipping, or language barrier-joke making. Everyone gets a share of the fried rice and vegetables, but you have your choice of the main entree. I opted for the ol' chicken and shrimp and was not disappointed. The only problems are as follows: -You have to eat with other folks (to be expected). -The wait, in the beginning, can be long if they are waiting on more people to join your table. -The bathrooms aren't uber clean. From just a restaurant perspective, it would get 3 stars. The friendly, entertaining chefs bumped it up to that 4th star.

Worst place ever. They gave me old sashimi that tasted awful. Unfortunately I had it to go and couldn't complain. Expensive and bad.

I still haven't found my Sake Sushi. This Ichiban did not impress me with the quality of the food. It was just "OK". The staff was courteous and helpful. The Chef we had did a show trick I hadn't seen before and he did a great volcano. However the ventilation system was horrible. The smoke was close to unbearable. I can't recommend this place for the price.

The food was okay and the server was nice BUT the place is really dirty. The walls and bathrooms are so dirty that they really need a whole new paint job not just a good scrubbing. And on the other side of cleaning, ironically, they started vacuuming while I was eating. It was 30 minutes prior to closing so I was not keeping the staff late.

This review is strictly based on my sushi experience, so it maybe somewhat skewed with considering the overall restaurant. I will begin with explaining my rating. Sushi - 5 stars - When I go, it's usually on a Mon, Tues, or Wed. Why? 15% off on sushi. In my opinion, they are a strong local contender in the consistency and quality of their sushi rolls. Note: I'm not saying they are the highest class, freshest, best in B'ham, or the most creative. To me, they just have a track record of consistently bringing the goods every time. My latest visit actually surprised me with new presentations of the "go 2 sushi" I always get. The sushi chefs are people friendly and quick. Room-Vibe - 2 stars - Yes, one will experience a slight shiver in their inner warning mechanism when you first walk in. It's old, a little dingy, and needs to be updated. Sometimes I like to pretend that I'm in an old kung-fu flick when I enter (at least in my head I do). It's covered in old wood and the sushi area is definitely in need of the extreme home makeovers team to move that bus on the place. Staff - 4 stars - Always nice with a great serving attitude. The waitress that served us last night kept the water flowing in our glasses. Restrooms - 3 stars - No dirty, but not new. So what keeps bringing me back? The consistent quality of sushi. I don't mind feeling like I've stepped on the set of "Enter the Dragon", the sushi is good with a good price tagged to it.

Daughter and I went in for Sushi only, sat in the sushi bar area, service was swift because we went early on a Monday night. The sushi was very bland, the tuna was sadly not fresh it was more grey in color than red. There list of rolls was several pages but they really all tasted the same when they reached the table. The place also has hibachi and you can smell the oil when you walk in, the atmosphere is dark and the place is in need of a good cleaning. They are clearly short on storage area because there are two chest freezers that you could fit 2 people in each and a double door refrigerator in the sushi bar area so design was clearly not a priority. Probably will not return.

The food was great and so was the service. The only thing I didn't like about the place is the cleanliness and the lighting. They desperately need to clean the place up because it seems very dirty! The little bowls they put on the table for wasabi and soy sauce were not clean at all so I did not use them. Also, it's really dark in the dining room because of a lack of adequate lighting. Other than that I really enjoyed the meal. I will probably dine here again but I hope that they read this and address the issues.

The food here is wonderful. The type of meats are best quality Angus and the lobster was cold water, which is the best tasting. I really enjoy the food here especially the sauces. I think Ichiban has the best sauces compared to any other Japanese Steakhouse I have been to. The restaurant has nice lighting that produces a calm effect in the restaurant with good music playing at a low setting. The lights dim set right for dinner and the service is friendly. I am not a drinker, but I seen the drinks and they are looking good.

I gotta say that I was a little frightened at first. I've been to some very high-end teppan-yaki places all over and first impression suggested that I might be underwhelmed - especially since the prices are about on par with some dressier / trendier restaurants. I say this because the place is fairly worn - I later found out why. The second impression was that it took nearly 10 minutes to get our drink order and subsequently place our meal order. The natives were getting restless. Our server, who was doubling as host and birthday drummer (there were many birthdays this night) apologized profusely for the delay; suggesting that the level of business this night grossly exceeded the norm for a Thursday. The third impression was the menu full of rules. Birthday rules, no substitutions rules, you WILL pay for what you order no matter what rules, please do not ask us to change the rules rules. It's a bit daunting, really. All these impressions would take a fair amount of goodness to undo. When I took my first sip of long island Iced tea, all was right with the world. They have a very long list of specialty drinks. You definitely get what you pay for - very tasty and you feel them. Go for the sumo size, if you dare! Then our teppan yaki chef Perez arrived. Without a doubt, Perez was the best teppan chef I have ever had, anywhere. He wanted us to have a good time, and he delivered. Additionally, this was the first time I've ordered steak medium rare at teppan and actually received it medium rare. It's usually delivered medium to medium well no matter how its ordered. Perez was big on audience participation and even let me try to break an egg on the side of the spatula like he did. In the end I think the rules must stem from people not understanding what they're ordering or people abusing the liberties of substitutions. We did test the rules by trying to substitute a $1.50 bowl of miso soup for a $1.50 bowl of house soup that comes with the meal. No go - the menu clearly says NO SUBSTITUTIONS. They were serious. We did try the sushi and I would give it a grade C-. Don't go here for sushi, teppan and drinks are what they excel at. If they slicked up the place just a bit, improved the sushi, and relaxed just a teeny bit on the rules, this would easily be a four star. But as it is, it's a great casual place to take the family...just be ready to follow the rules! :-)

I don't know anything about the teppan- we went in for the sushi. Service was slow and poor. The food was meh. We ordered a wide variety of sushi and it was all equal in taste and texture. I was very disappointed. I've tried a great number of sushi places around the country and Ichiban is now on the bottom of my list.

Very homey with higher quailty food than other grills. I strongly recommend.
