You get the sense that this place is going to be good from the "hole in the wall" look of the place to the fact that it is always packed. So naturally this was one of the first places that I wanted to eat since my move here (transplant from Los Angeles). The menu was fairly simple, which I appreciated. I ordered the BBQ pork sandwich, shredded, some fries an the home made pie pocket thingy. The BBQ was... Not bad. But neither did it have me overwhelmed with its tastiness. The fries were fine. But the pie... That thing was awesome. Definitely get the pie.

In the magic city about once a month. Do my best to go to GR BBQ. I have one agenda and that is the fried pies. It doesnt matter peach or apple they both will melt in your mouth. On this trip I took my 92 year old mother. My mothers mother or my grandmother was fantastic at making fried pies. My Moms comment after one bite was they are as good as her Mothers. It has been years since she has eaten one of her mothers and she's thinking this will be like MacDonalds. Boy was she surprised. Im giving a four based on fried pies. On return trip I will work thru a hamburger or the hamburger steak based on reviews and surveying the dining room they are both favorites. Perhaps a five will be in order.

While as a rule I love golden rule, this location on Montgomery hwy bent me the wrong way. On July 4th I wanted to call in a few ponds of meat. The woman on the phone refused to take my order. I repeat. She outright refused to take my order and asked me to just come in. When I got there, there was a line and they did not have what my family wanted to order (chicken). If she would have taken my order she could have told me that thy have no chicken instead I drove across town for the pleasure of her being unapologetic. And no... Golden rule does not provide an official online menu and many franchises offer chicken.

I don't get to travel to the south very often and when I do I always try to get barbecue. Golden Rule was near my hotel and got good enough reviews on Yelp so I decided to go for it. I'm not sure about the other reviews expressing bad service, the service was just fine and my waitress was very attentive. I ordered the pork plate and the meat was tender and had great bark, but the sauce left a little something to be desired - it was almost too tangy. I would definitely eat here again, but I was not blown away to the point that I feel the place deserves four stars.

The service is great here on Hwy 31 and come with a simile all the time. Golden rule in hoover always great food hot off the grill never cold. The dessert is the one of main attraction of the menu. You should try the experience of a great place called Golden Rule in hoover,al.

Good barbecue, great sweet and sour slaw, French fries are good, too. Order inside or outside meat for your sandwich or platter. Diner atmosphere, fast service. We usually order sauce on the side for sandwiches so that they do not get soggy with too much since. Sauce is delicious also. Not too tomatoey. Just the right amount of spice. Good sweet tea. Even the ice is good!

No idea how long this place has been here but I've been going since 1986. It's funny how Golden Rule will have a line out the door and you can go two miles down the road and there are several fancy new BBQ joints with no on in the parking lot. It's a funny little building with old-school waitresses, some of who have been there forever. The BBQ is great but don't be afraid to try the other stuff. The hamburger steak with onions and gravy is fantastic and the burgers are very good. I like to order the gravy on the side even with a BBQ sandwich and use it on my fries. Yummy. Golden Rule doesn't get the press the other places get and I don't know that the other locations are that good but this old original place is well worth a visit.

The reviews tell me a couple of things. Most eat a hamburger. Secondly lots of folks have no clue what good BBQ is. I do chuckle when I see northerners review southern BBQ. IMO Golden Rule is barely edible BBQ.

It's really odd to go into a packed BBQ restaurant and everyone is eating a hamburger. Still, going against all logic, I ordered the BBQ sandwich. The pork was good by itself but their sauce left something to be desired. And the pre-pour it on before it hits the table. Ask for it on the side...or just order a burger like everyone else.

I wasn't expecting much but our trip to Golden Rule was still a disappointment. Service was surprisingly rude, even haughty, which I had never experienced before at any BBQ place. The sweet tea was borderline rancid, inexcusable for any Southern restaurant. The sliced pork BBQ was good but the chopped had very little flavor. There are only four sides available: Baked beans, cole slaw, fries, and--almost an insult to a Southern BBQ lover--store-bought potato chips. That part made it look like they weren't even paying lip service. The pork plates were crying out for some bread. The waitress brought us a basket with two slices of some very good bread, then after we had finished it, she took the basket away, permanently. No offer of seconds. That's all you're getting. Of all the things to skimp on . . . bread? Seriously? In any decent BBQ restaurant, they lay a new loaf out on the table and you proceed accordingly. There are four TVs in the place (which is small)--you cannot really escape them--and when we were there, every single TV was tuned to Fox News. Not appetizing. Who needs inept propaganda with their BBQ? On the good side: The cole slaw was possibly the best I've ever had, with no mayo and only a very mild brine. The BBQ sauce itself is good. The regulars obviously enjoy the place. For us, though, it was pretty abysmal. Thank God we didn't take any guests.

We waited a while to be seated, though it was Friday night so that was to be expected as it's not a huge place. I love the look of the place outside, very sixties-ish or so. I had been to a Golden Rule a long time ago, but it had closed down. I ordered the sliced pork sandwich with baked beans. Yum on both accounts. I do like the sauce they use; it certainly isn't weak. I must discuss the homemade fried pie. You get your choice of apple or peach. We were expecting slices of pie deep-fried, but what emerged from the kitchen were basically pie empanadas. Pie empanadas! Thumbs up, save room for 'em for sure.

I must second the opinion of another reviewer who said "not all golden rule locations are created equal". This location is the real deal. From the friendly staff to the food, this location is leaps and bounds above the rest. I'd heard they serve one of the best burgers in town so I tried the 1/2 lb jumbo cheeseburger. It did not disappoint. Very tasty beef and perfectly prepared (little crisp on the outside, juicy inside). Great prices, good portions. Will be back to try the BBQ to see if the rating bumps from 4 to 5 stars

Another one of those foods that you don't realize how much you're going to miss it until it's gone: Tender, amazingly smoky and perfectly cooked pig. Hands down the single greatest way to enjoy being a carnivore. It may be, and likely is, my Southern heritage that makes me salivate thinking about the Southeastern style of barbecue more than any other, but when you've got a roll that's slathered in 1/4 stick of butter then grilled to perfection, a heap of pork on it (Order it: Chopped, Mixed only), a nice serving a sauce and a layer of just-thick-enough pickles... Well, now I'm hungry again. On a side note, the only great barbecue I've had since living in NYC was cooked by a Jew from Connecticut using an old family recipe. I have no idea how to make sense of that last sentence.

There are several Golden Rule locations, they are very inconsistent. Some are very poor, most are about average, this location is GREAT. The BBQ is really good, well prepared in an open pit which obviously has been used for enough years to be well seasoned, providing an excellent slow cooking environment. This makes a big difference in the taste and quality of the food. I am personally a burger snob and rather hard to impress in this realm. In my humble but accurate opinion this place serves the best burger in the Birmingham area. It is listed on the menu as "beef burger" just a great no frills straight forward quality burger. Do not make the mistake of thinking that all Golden Rule locations are created the same, this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

I ate at Golden Rule every Friday when I worked in Hoover and never had a bad meal. Love their burgers so much I never tried the barbecue. In the winter they have an excellent chili and their cheese toast is delicious. Nice staff and Nick, the owner, is always friendly and hard working.

If you want barbecue ribs or chicken don't stop at this one . They only have pork and its not that good , but the hamburger is suppose to be great. Our waitress highly recommended the burger. We had our mouth set for barbecue and me,my daughter and my sister were disappointed . The Cole slaw , baked beans , tea and bread were good. They also have a homemade fried Apple or peach pie for desert that looked good.

Food is ok, but they treat their customers like cattle. Herd you in, herd you out, very poor customer service. Refuse to allow you to select where you sit. Very rude. I'll not go back.
