I've been to Full Moon a few times- and was happy every time! Their sauce is excellent. I've had the sliced pork, pork links, the chicken, and the ribs- and everything was great. You always get large portions and I really like the chow chow that comes with everything. The last time I went I had a slice of coconut pie, and that was very good too. A great place to get bbq if you live in Birmingham, or are just passing through.

In a land swelling with good BBQ joints, it's hard to choose a favorite, but Full Moon is a good choice for anyone throwing a big party who needs a few pounds of old-fashioned smoked Southern meat. Prices are reasonable and it's easy to find. Get within a mile and smell your way there.

I am a Texan. I travel to the SE part of our great nation quite a bit for work. Eating BBQ with work folk is common and easy. Again, I am a Texan. Where in the Heck is the Beef BBQ? It is no where to be found. But, of all the pulled pork (sandwiches and plates) that I have had in Alabama and South Carolina, Full Moon makes my BBQ pants dance. The line out the door supports the reality that this place is gooood. The service was matter of fact, limited dialog, almost grunts, but was worth it when I got my plate of pork goodness. The chow chow, pickles and buttery bun made it even better. Full moon has become a staple when in B Ham.

The small-shackish location of this local chain serves up some really good barbeque! I ordered the standard pork sandwich, chopped with alot of outside brown. So much was piled on that in order to eat it without dropping half the meat, I opened it up and split the meat between the buns - basically 2 open-face sandwiches. The meat was moist and had a good smoke flavor. The spicy chow-chow slaw they put on top was tasty, albeit not as much as I would have liked. The bun held up to the vinegary sauce that was provided on the table. Kudos to them also having tabasco on the table too. Service was pretty slow though. It was late for lunch (1 pm) and the place wasn't that busy, so I was a bit surprised. But the food was worth the wait. The only downside to this place, is the facilities. It's extremely small. Maybe 12 tables total - some 2 tops, most 4 tops, 1 6 or 8 top. There are no standing counters. I would imagine you'd have to wait for a table to open up at peak times.

This is a solid barbecue joint. It is popular though so parking and wait can be an issue. It is a small place, but the cram in a lot of seating. You order at the counter and then take a seat. They will call your number when your food is ready. It is crowded, but they turn tables fairly quickly. That means your wait for a table may not be that bad even during the lunch or dinner rush. For my meal I ordered the pork plate with potato salad and baked beans as my sides. You get quite a bit of pork. You can even get it with a grilled bun on the side for toast or to turn the pork into a sandwich. The barbecue sauce had great flavor. I did not get a chance to taste the pork without the sauce, but with the sauce I can tell you it has good flavor. The baked beans had good flavor as did the potato salad. You get a good amount of each. The grilled buns had a nice butter flavor on their own. I chose to just eat mine like toast. This is a good barbecue option for lunch or a casual dinner. The place is not much too look at, but the food makes up for that. You get a good amount of food for your money as well.

Excellent food, but beware, the hours posted here are wrong. They are only open for lunch.

I phoned my order in early to pick up that afternoon. I was told I could get my food at 4 o'clock. When I arrived there was a very long line and quite a wait just to get to the register. When I finally got to the register, nobody could find my ticket and they insinuated that I hadn't called in an order. I had quite a long discussion on the phone with the person that took the order because they had to find out when a whole chicken would be ready (which was 4pm). They found the person that took my order and she remembered talking to me, but nobody ever apologized for losing my order. When I first came in they were trying to find another lost phone order. This is ridiculous, get it together. I spelled my name three times for that person who was supposed to be writing the ticket...yet no ticket...last time I order by phone here. They don't even care or say they are sorry.

I enjoyed the turkey it was quite flavorful. I was disappointed they did not serve brisket. I would not invite them to one of the top 10 barbecue places in the US as two entities have in the past two years. The baked beans had a very nice flavor but we're a bit sweet for my taste.

So you should get the pulled pork sandwich, sliced, mixed, with a side of chow chow. The pork is self explanatory. The chow chow is their award-winning vinaigrette-based coleslaw that has a bit of heat to it. The baked beans are also worth trying. This is their downtown, Southside location. It's small and deep into downtown, but the pork is still smoked on the premises. I've heard their pies are good, but sadly they aren't served on the Southside.

Looked like the real deal....but I have to squeal... This place is an authentic roadside BBQ joint. It's full of pictures of celebrity's etc that have enjoyed the q here. I went on Friday at noon and waited in anticipation in a short line. I ordered a two meat plate with Ribs and Pork and a soft drink. Sad to say but both meats were under cooked. The pork was a mixed bag. The outside crust and meat just below it was tasty and had a nice smoke flavor. However the meat from the inside was rubbery and tuff. It simply hadn't been cooked long enough. The ribs were also tasty and had a nice smoke flavor but were undercooked. I'd say they were in at a high temp for too short a time. The secret of pork BBQ is low and slow. The collagen simply hadn't broken down and the meat was still tuff and ripped rather than breaking apart when you tried to take it off the bone. The sides were ok. I had beans and Mac n cheese. Both were cafeteria grade. However, I don't eat q for the sides. Condiments- everything but BBQ sauce on the tables? In an eat with your hands BBQ joint you really should have napkins on the tables! I'm not sure if I got this place on a bad day, if the cook forgot to start the smoker last night, or if they are just slipping? I'll try it again to make sure this wasn't an isolated mediocre day. The ladies working the counter are great. They make you feel right at home.
