I love the decor and vibe of this place. The chandeliers give it a classy edge. They have good beer and/or wine specials depending on what day of the week it is. They have plenty of TVs and, even though almost all of the seating is outside, there are enough plastic walls and heaters to keep you warm. I've never had a pizza there that I didn't love, but I did have the olive tamponade recently and it was very salty.

We had a party here on a Friday night and Brett simply made it happen. His answer was always "yes" and his question was always "how can I help?" Of course, the pizza is fantastic, but the staff and the management made our party perfect. We wanted to show a slide show and Brett attached a huge white sheet on the wall so we could do so. They were completely accommodating and fun to work with. I look forward to having another party there!

So glad that the two Jimmy Johns within two miles of our hotel wouldn't deliver to us!! Otherwise we wouldn't have tried this place. First off-the setting was great. They had a covered patio with open sides. There were chandeliers hanging inside, and they had a singer/guitar player who was performing at a perfectly reasonable volume for us to still have a conversation. It was really nice for a warm evening. Now to the food: We started out with the stuffed mushrooms. There were six huge mushroom caps, stuffed with seasoned breadcrumbs. A huge mound of nothing but breadcrumbs. They weren't disgusting, but I definitely wouldn't order them again. I had a calzone that was really good. The crust was tender, but crispy, and the marinara was really flavorful. (They poured it over the top, I think I would have preferred it on the side because that part of the crust got mushy.) D had the pork tenderloin sandwich, which seems too simple to be any good, buts that's probably why it was SO good! Tender, flavorful, perfect. It was served with a dipping sauce that you didn't need, but you certainly didn't mind. There was a softball team there that night, and they seemed to be having a great time, there were two older ladies having a girls' night, a family with kids, and several couples. This place has something for everyone!

We stopped by during a shopping trip in Homewood and we're very pleased. My wife and small kids ordered a large split topping pizza and it was the perfect size. If you have kids that are older than six you might want to consider getting an additional small pizza. Most of the restaurant is outdoor but they have a small indoor bar and the outdoor is climate controlled. This place has a great feel. Overall I do think it's a tad overpriced for pizza. A large with a few soft drinks will get you over $30. It was a good meal but a bit much for single large pizza.

I love Dave's Pizza. It's my favorite pizza joint in the B'ham. Things I love: the pizza, the birch trees, the chandeliers, Elvis, the parking in the back, and the fact I can bring my smallest pooch on their patio. Relaxed as can be, whenever I'm in the neighborhood, this is always my first choice for foods. A toast to Dave! (RIP)

I've always loved going to Dave's. It's the only place that I can bring my dog (sitting outside of course), and the people are always so nice. The lunch buffet is a decent deal as well, though I'll admit I feel like it is my duty to maximize the economic efficiency of my eating at buffets (read, I over eat), so I usually leave with a bit of a tummy ache. I strongly recommend the pesto with chicken (I forget the name they have for it).

  • Brad H.

Awesome pizza, cool outdoor venue (plenty of fans for summer and heaters for winter), great value lunch buffet if you're a big eater (and I am). BBQ pizza is great, as is the buffalo chicken, and well...all the pizzas are great at Dave's!

One of my favorite pizza places! The Hot Chik is our favorite! Atmosphere is nice and relaxed. Beer selection is good and we've always had friendly servers.

This was my 5th time in last 3 months. Pizza quality has gone way down. Hardly any sauce and cheese on their signature veggie pizza. We did tell the waitress along with the order that the last pizza was very bad and lacked cheese and sauce. She said she ll take care of it and make sure it doesn't happen this time. And she added $3.60 to the check just to make the pizza right as it used to be before. Also 25c for a glass of tap water is ridiculous when you are having a couple of other drinks. Get it up guys or else lose your regular customers forever.

Great calzone! The atmosphere is relaxing and the decor is great. Awesome staff as well. I would definitely go here again.

Hit the buffet at Dave's today---again. Probably my 50th time, and I keep coming back- what does that tell you? Had some meat lover's topped off by three slices of Dave's Special (all meat and all vegetable), pretty hard to beat. Usually on the buffet they have a chicken and cheese thing thats pretty salty, and another style thats BBQ with a sweet sauce... if you have a sweet tooth that's as close to dessert that you'll get at Dave's. Anyway, for $9 including tax, it's a deal.

Great place! Plan to go back! We attended a 1 year old birthday party. Everyone had a great time! Even the baby! Pizza was good. Service was great. Jazz music was great. I also had the chicken salad. Very delicious! Not sure if it s a bar or a pizza place but give it a try!

Dave's patio is great and the buffet is a great deal for lunch. Go for the margherita pizza - great on the thin crust.

This would be more like 3.5 stars.... honestly, I would give the food a solid 3 and the service a 4 or 5. First off, let me say that the manager and staff were very helpful! I had a group of 7 coming for a birthday party and when I called on Thursday to make a reservation for the following Friday, they told me that they couldn't hold a reservation for that small of a number but would do everything they could to have us a table ready at the requested time. And they did. The service was wonderful and everyone was friendly. As for the food.....I think I would be happier if it wasn't so expensive. For two people, the bill almost $60--which was for 1 large pizza, 2 beer & 2 jack and cokes. I would have been okay with paying that much if the pizza was better, and I really had high hopes for this place. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, just not great. For an almost $30 pizza, I want GREAT. However, the atmosphere is GREAT! Love the open air and how laid back it is. Very family friendly!

We love eating a Dave's!! We eat there once at least once a week. During the week they have a really great lunch buffet with lots of choices. Their high chairs are a bit outdated and pretty scary looking so we usually do not visit there with friends who have children that can not sit in a regular chair.

Went by the yelp and citysearch reviews and checked out the menu online - lots of good healthier option pizzas. The hotel people immediately said without hesitation to order from Dave's Pizza. I ended up ordering a medium whole-wheat pesto for delivery. Super-friendly on the phone, came in less than 30 minutes with a smile, just under $20. Medium was a little too much for one person, but it should make for great breakfast pizza. Really good pizza, evenly cooked, great crust. Recommendations are well-deserved!

  • Evan F.

I only come here for the pork tenderloin sandwich. It is outstanding. The pizza isn't anything special, and it's fairly pricey. The ambiance is unique and nice, IMO, but the outdoor/indoor layout seems to encourage parents to bring their kids here and let them go nuts. For that reason, I never eat here on Friday or Saturday nights.

    (4)
  • Joseph W.

After years of wanting to try this place out and never getting around to it, my wife and teen kids went there on a Saturday night and the place was packed... We ended up being sat beside and sharing a waitress with a huge party of about 30 raucous people who all seemed to be ordering separately, so I was anticipating lackluster service, but the waitress was great. We ordered the sweet tang pizza, a small margarita pizza and a pepperoni calzone and all three were delicious and loaded with toppings. Everybody in my family seems to have different tastes and expectations when it comes to pizza, but we were all pleased with the quality and flavor of our food. The decor and atmosphere was fun and casual also. It would have been nice if there was some condiments (Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, etc) at the table, but that was the only shortcoming I could detect with this place. We will be back.

  • Nicole N.

Just passing through town and should of known it wouldn't be too good cause there was one customer in the entire building. I got a pepperoni & cheese calzone and it was not good at all, the inside was luke warm and the cheese still hadn't even melted. Service was good but the food sucked, I should of gotten a pizza :-/

If I have learned one thing about pizza, it is that everybody is welcome to their own opinion as to what good pizza is. I grew up in Chicago, worked for a pizza cheese company and spent a lot of time on the East Coast trying to help independent pizzerias improve their recipes. I have had amazing pizzas and some of the most disgusting concoctions known to man. Dave's is neither of those. We had our young daughter with us, so our meal wasn't a culinary excursion, sausage pizza, chicken nuggets, and cheesy bread. Had I been blind folded I would have said that the pizza was a Tombstone (same sausage) the chicken nuggets wet battered paper, and the cheesy bread the highlight of the meal. It's not a bad pizza, but there is better in Birmingham. Much better. Try Davenport's, Salvatore's, Formaggio's, Rocky's, or Tortuga's. There may be better, just haven't tried every place yet.

  • John L.

I used to eat at Dave's many times over the years when I lived here but have not been there in four years or so. The salad was good but the margarita pizza was awful no flavor at all. When the waiter brought it he said it was a little burnt and they would make another one we said we would try it and see but he never came back to see and there was no one else eating in the place he just sat on his ass on the other side of the room. The other thing was it was a 10" pizza and it was $20+ are you kidding me what a rip off. I can't say I will be back I do know that I will not order a margarita pizza again.

Dave's is a great place, like an earlier reviewer mentioned, to just kick back with some friends, enjoy a brew (or "root brew") and some great pizza and chillax. The atmosphere's very laid-back, sometimes on weekends there's an acoustic guitarist/musician playing, and the restaurant itself is set up so that on great weather nights the plastic windows can be rolled up and the place turned into an open-air area. And it offers (completely) outdoor seating, and is nearby the newest SoHo restaurants/stores district, so safety's generally not a concern and the scenery is pretty quaint. The pizza's pretty good - a bit on the moderately-priced side but very doable and very filling. And a wide variety of traditional to healthy choices of toppings are available. Everyone I've known that visits seems to enjoy themselves and their meals. I have yet to visit and not have a great experience, and that includes going with a single other person to going with a group of 5+. Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed.

Dave's pizza is certainly very good pizza, but it's normally pretty pricey for a whole pie. But on weekdays between 11 and 2, you pay $8 and change (which includes a cup for the self-serve soda fountain) for all you can eat pizza buffet. They have have least 4 different pies out at a time, sometimes more. And during peak lunch hours as they make more pizzas, the lady will come out and offer you slices of hot fresh pizza at your table... So instead of going to Cici's for lunch, you can just spend a couple bucks more to enjoy the total experience of Dave's pizza. Some of the non-pizza menu items are good too, like the pork sandwich, which comes with au jus dipping sauce. Atmosphere-wise there are lots of TVs and the windows are all roll-up which is done when the weather is nice outside. Parking is sorta iffy - usually you will have to find a parking spot across the street in the soho plaza or back along the main stretch (18th street).

Love it! Really helpful with special requests. I ordered a pizza without cheese and it came out perfect on the first try! I personally prefer a crispier pizza, but my boyfriend says it doesn't get better than this!

This place was awesome. We were here for a rehearsal dinner, and had the best service I've had in months. The pizza was great, the drinks cold, and the staff fantastic. Definitely worth a visit!

  • Craig P.

Excellent pizza, great service, great atmosphere. Dog friendly outside, which is a huge plus for us. Draft beer selection is fair, but that's the only thing that knocked it down from a 5. More craft beer would make it a perfect stop! Thanks!

Delicious pizza! A little pricey, but well worth it!

Dave's is a homey little spot in SoHo to grab pizza with some friends. There's ample patio space around the establishment, and during pretty days most of the inside of the restaurant is open to the fresh air as well! Dave's bakes up a variety of standard and specialty pies and calzones, and the option to create something completely from scratch is also offered. The wife and I took new-to-town friends by and every pizza that hit the table was devoured and enjoyed! They have whole wheat crust available, and they serve bottled Abita root beer, which is arguably one of the best root beers made.

Great locally owned pizza place. I just moved to the area and thought Dave's was a great place for families and folk that just want to hang out. I took my 3 year old son we had a great time. Nice meighbohood place.

    (5)
  • Dax B.

Dave's is good for what it is - a place to grab a pie with friends and toss back a few beers. I like their sauce, although I prefer a thinner crust. Dave's is located in Homewood, not Mountain Brook.

  • Sherri W.

OMG the pizza I had from Dave's has to rank in the top 3 pizzas of all time... I chose the Mediterranean Pizza and a Greek Salad and had them delivered to my hotel room. The Mediterranean had a whole wheat crust and was topped with pesto, feta, green and black olives, mozzarella, and provolone. It was perfectly cooked and arrived still piping hot. The crust was slightly crispy and there were plenty of olives. The salad was great, but really who cares? The pizza was fantastic! If you are in the Homewood area, stop here!

    (5)
  • MJ S.

I think this is some of the best pizza I've ever eaten. I love eating the whole wheat crust dipped into extra red sauce after noshing on one of their all-veggie pizzas.

  • Jim S.

Funky little place in Homewood... Small menu but then again it is all about pizza. Had the TurboDave and Florentine both of which were excellent. Highly recommend as a place to take people from out of town since it is a little bit different from the normal pizza joint.

A group of us from Tennessee came to Birmingham for a Jimmy Buffett concert. We drove around looking for a place to eat and found Dave's Pizza. Most of us had the Dave's special pizza and it was awesome. Beer cold and service great. We will definitely return when in the area again.

  • Curly Q.

Dave's is some pretty good pizza. I like their outdoor patio area too. They have great pizzas, an option of getting a whole wheat crust, and they serve pitchers of microbrewed beer. Can't be beat in Birmingham. A little on the pricey side though.

    (4)
  • Louay B.

The gourmet pizza capitol of the south. I had to take off a star because it's a little pricey for pizza, but they have the pesto in Alabama. They have a huge patio to enjoy the wonderful Alabama weather and a nice beer selection. Service is excellent and the parking lot in the back makes life easier. The crowd varies from an indie seen to young families from homewood.

Service and ingredients were fine, but a restaurant specializing in pizza should know how to cook it and get it right -- every time! My Renaissance Pizza was so doughy in the center it was almost liquid and could hardly be picked up. A classic Pizza Margherita (Dave's spells it Margarita so maybe they're aiming for something different,) has a thin crust, crisp but chewy -- not puffy & soft. Bruschetta is very crisp, toasted "Italian" bread, often rubbed with garlic with various toppings such as crushed fresh tomato or tapenade. not, not, not fluffy, thick, soft, deep dish pizza-style bread. Fun place, but I like the real thing.

    (2)
  • Patrick G.

I really enjoy their food-- the pizza is really great. I really enjoy the Hot Chick and the Pollo Pesto. I know this is insane, but I'm knocking 2 stars off of their rating for the following reasons: 1. They charge 25 cents for a glass of water. Seriously?! I've been to $100/plate restaurants where TAP WATER is complimentary. My party of five people left the restaurant our server told us they'd be charging for tap water. Ludicrous. 2. Their draft beer system has been broken for at least 2 weeks now. Unacceptable, according to this draft-lover. Get it together Dave's! Don't let the small things ruin your otherwise great restaurant!

  • Daniel H.

I do not recommend this place. We came in for lunch on a Sunday because we wanted to go to a local business instead of the chain across the street. They don't serve iced tea, which is strange in the South. Then we ordered one of their signature dishes (their chicken salad), and they were out of it. When you have just opened for the day, being out of one of the dishes you brag most about by 12:30 is pretty lousy. My recommendation is to pass on this place.

  • Felita E.

I went to Dave's for the first time tonight with Homewood's 7th grade cheerleaders and cheer moms. I love the atmosphere. It was great for the girls and moms to talk and unwind after the game tonight. Food was delicious and the service was very pleasant. The servers did a great job with hosting the 20+ of us. I definitely recommend Dave's.

    (5)
  • Andrew H.

Worst experience ever! They got our order wrong, charged us 25 cents a water, and overcharged us for a pitcher. Then, when we told them, a guy named Brett was very abrasive and rude! Don't ever go!

  • Madeline S.

We love Dave's. It could be that we can walk here, bring our dog, or that we love the pizza. Any one of those reasons would make for an great place but combined makes for an awesome sauce place. We usually get mozzarella sticks, a large pizza half pepperoni half cheese, and if we walked a pitcher of beer. Occasionally we will get the Sweet Tang aka BBQ Chicken Pizza and it does not disappoint. They also deliver and are honest about how long it will take. A rare and beautiful quality.

  • Hannah D.

Love Dave's! The Cheesy Garlic Bread is great and the DAVEggie and the Mediterranean pizza are yummy! We love the atmosphere here and love sitting outside in the back! And.. we can bring our pup!!

Dave's is a Homewood institision. Before all the upstart Pizza joints came to town Dave's was there and it has always been great. Fresh ingridents, perfect crust, and tons of different options. The beer selections is bar none one of the best in town. The atmosphere is good as well with ample indoor and outdoor seating an plenty of TVs to watch sports ball on.

  • Brian C.

Dave, if you want to close for a private party, turn off the neon "open sign" and put up a sign saying your closed for the night. It's a wee bit irksome to park, walk a block, get into the store and be greeted with "are you here for party? We're not open to the public." Seriously, a sheet of paper and a marker goes a long way.

    (2)
  • Jimmy H.

Here on business and ordered a pizza, take out. Sauce was overly rich and a bit thick, as if made primarily from canned tomato paste with added seasoning. Crust was decent, but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't order again. Decent, but not GOOD!!

  • Bruce K.

I was initially going to just get a pizza to go and have that for lunch, but after taking a look at the four pies that were out for the all-you-can-eat lunch, I opted to skip the pizza and dig in. Good crunchy crust, lots of toppings, plenty of flavor. This was a hit! You'll experience different varieties than I did, but I was able to sample a pepperoni & sausage, pepperoni & green peppers and a chicken barbecue. All would have been excellent on their own, and were better for being able to have a bit from each one. Self-service on paper plates. So what? I like paying $10 for decent 'za and leaving with a full tummy. Parking is a big pain here. Find the entrance to the parking deck!

  • Nick K.

Ordered delivery from Dave's on Saturday to eat while watching the Mayweather fight. We ordered 1 XL BBQ Chicken Pizza and Cheese Bread. The Total was $41. The taste of the pizza was good and there was nothing wrong with the Cheese Bread, but like the fight it was not worth the money. My biggest complaint was that the toppings and Cheese stopped 3-4 inches away from the edge of the crust. The crust tasted good, but you charged me $41 and cheated me on toppings.

This pizza is great, second only to Post Office in the local Bham area. Lots of options, several sizes, plus sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. Patio seating when the weather is nice. Service was ok, a little bit slow getting the food out, but the quality was superb.

Great pizza and the lunch buffet is a deal. Don't forget to learn about the Velvet Elvis.

We went to Dave's a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a while. I had only been for lunch before, and it was always pretty good. This last experience was not the best. But not enough to deter us from trying again. Starting out, it was a Friday night. So of course it was packed. But we were seated very quickly. Maybe its my old age, but the music was too loud for us to even really talk. We ordered the pizza and the flavor and crust were outstanding. But when it came out, it was a little cold. But the taste of it was the saving grace. I tend to think we were a rare case that night since it was crowded. After reading the reviews, it sounds like I should try a few other things on the menu. I will hopefully have an improved, updated review after my next trip.

I ordered a jumbo-size half-Hot Chick and half-Sweet Tang for a little more than $30. The slices are humongous so one will be enough to take you out if you're a girl. The flavors were delicious and they don't gimp out on flavor. The Sweet Tang is basically sweet BBQ chicken in a pizza. It was the winner on this plate and I was really happy going through it. The loser for me was the Hot Chick. Don't listen to the people working there. The Hot Chick is spicier than what they claim. I thought me being Asian and handling 'mild' back in California, that this would have nothing on me but it did. You better have a lot of water or a quart of milk next to you when you eat this. I also got diarrhea after eating half of this slice. On the plus side, it makes you feel like a new person after the episode and you're not left with a food coma. Refrigerator Test: After 3 days of sitting in the refrigerator the spiciness flavor lingers but I'm not sweating anymore! Make sure you supplement each bite with the ranch dressing they graciously provide!

  • Justin L.

The dinning experience has changed over the past few years for the better (in my opinion). The addition of some extra TV's, a smattering of some laid back live entertainment and the continuing evolution of the pizza menu keeps this place relevant and relaxed. The place is good year round, but if you want the best experience pick a day in the 70-80's with a slight breeze. You'll never want to leave. For people with pizza commitment issues, head over during the lunch buffet to get a sampling of their excellent pies.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
