I had an early dinner with friends on a Friday night. Overall I thought the dinner was pretty good. They offer some unique dishes that you might not find at other Mexican restaurants in town. The restaurant is also more upscale, and a bit more pricey too. The chips and salsa were wonderful. The salsa was fresh and flavorful. You can tell that it is made in-house. The frozen margaritas were cold and potent. I don't think I could drink more than one. Or maybe I've become a light weight. I ordered the Chipotle Shrimp and I thought it was delicious. I loved the creamy sauce and the roasted chipotle peppers. The peppers were not only spicy but they had a good smoky flavor. The Tex-Mex rice, fresh pica, and avocado were a good combination with the sauce. Flour tortilla and crispy chip strips are also served on the plate. I enjoyed it very much, and I would recommend this dish.

I had dinner here last night; this was my first visit to Cocina Superior. The customer service was far less than one would expect at a restaurant with these price points at dinner. Our waiter behaved as though we were putting him out just by being there. I found the food to be ok. The Hippy Chick Wrap was really good; the Queso dip not so much. My niece had the Capitan Taco Salad, which was average. The margarita on the rocks I had should simply be avoided. I'll continue to support La Paz and Superior Grill and other Mexican restaurants in Birmingham who offer a better overall experience. I'd give this 2.5 stars but am rounding down since half-stars aren't an option.

This is simply the best Tex-Mex establishment around the Birmingham area. Their happy hour margaritas are the best around, and I love the cup you get to keep! Brunch on the weekends is great for 2$ cocktails. On an average night be prepared to wait quite a while for a table inside or on the indoor patio. Also get ready to shell out some serious $$$. I have spent 45$ on a dinner with 2 drinks several times. However I keep coming back because the food is so good, and the limited selection of good Mexican restaurants in Birmingham.

Horrible. RUDE bartender saying COMPLETELY inappropriate things about friends of ours... AFTER BEING TOLD they were friends of ours!!! Management had zero response for it when told about it. What a complete shame... the facility has potential... too bad the people in it and the food being served isn't up to par. They certainly have a high opinion of themselves.

Stopped here with family after a tiring day of moving. The location and atmosphere are nice, good for a fun night out. Decent cocktails: I got the pomegranate margarita and enjoyed it. The chicken tortilla soup is also very, very good. My mother enjoyed the black bean soup. Food was good overall. The service was kind of slow and our waiter was strange. I can tell that Cocina Superior is trying to go for the upscale Mexican thing. I think they shouldn't serve cocktails in plastic cups if that's the case. It has the potential to be really chic spot but the not stellar service and lack of attention to certain details caused this place to fall short. Its a decent place, though, but I don't see a reason to go back if a trendy fusion place is what I'm looking for - I can find that elsewhere in town.

This place is in a great location off Lakeshore Drive inside the Brookwood Village outdoor shopping mall. I usually sit outside on the comfortable covered patio. The few dishes that I have ordered have all been excellent! You have to try their shrimp tacos!! I generally go with friends or family and end up staying there for a good two hours because of the friendly atmosphere. Additionally, the libations are on point! Their lime margarita is delicious and, if you dare to drink something a little stronger, the monsoon is an excellent choice. I am a big fan of these casual upscale Mexican restaurants that cater to a more "adult crowd." If you're in the area and are looking for a good place to eat some Mexican food then I highly suggest you give this place a try. Cheers!

Cocina Superior is a great Tex-Mex offering in the city of Birmingham. The food is fantastic, the wait staff is wonderful, and the atmosphere is one of the best in the city - visiting the restaurant on a Friday or Saturday night will confirm that. The prices are moderate (i.e., about $11 an entree on average, although you can find cheaper and more expensive dishes if that's your thing), but it's almost guaranteed you won't leave hungry regardless of what you order. Try it out - a misleading gem amidst a shopping mall environment.

This is one of my office's "go-to" lunch spots for business meetings, or just when the whole crew needs a good lunch. Today I had the Filet Mignon 'Diablo' Salad. The description on the menu was a little misleading, but the dish was so tasty nevertheless.

Apparently, things have changed since the older reviews. We've all, as a family, been very pleased with the food and excellent service. There's a wide array of fresh appetizers, lunch specials, salads, dinners, and even brunch! The dining are is open and airy, very clean, the porch and patio areas are inviting and the restrooms are clean. And you're never rushed or abandoned by the courteous, well trained wait staff.

First class Mexican food is how I'd describe Cocina. People may complain about prices but hey, you get what you pay for. $12 is not outrageous for excellent filet tacos (grilled to a perfect medium-rare as ordered) with a mound of rice, container of queso dip, and a cup of tortilla soup. Much rather pay that for this high quality, high flavor meal compared to spending 7 or 8 bucks at a "runny refried beans" run of the mill Mexican joint. The salsa is very tasty and fresh here as well, only complaint is the chips are too thin, they break easily.

The Cabo Tuna salad was incredible. The waiter was great, and very friendly. This is probably the best Tex-Mex place in B'ham. It's a little pricey, but not too bad. We will be back.

We always have a good meal and great service. I really like the Cabo Sashimi Tuna Salad with the Diablo vinaigrette. My only critique is that I would like to know which items are gf. It gets quite busy on the weekends. But I'm very thankful they are open until 10 pm on weekdays & until 11 pm on the weekends.

When I shop or actually before I shop I like a drink and the pomegranate margarita with some guacamole hits the spot. It's normally in the afternoon and the restaurant is just how I like it quiet and easy going. Bartender is always pleasant and I get my pre shopping fix and I'm out of there. Good spot!

The restaurant in Itself is very nice esthetically. The beef tacos I ordered were messy presentation wise they over did it with the cheese and lettuce. and way too salty. I ordered the frozen mojito and I honestly thought it was too sweet so I returned it and the waiter got offended and even tried it with his other co Workers, Not sure if people were returning them. the experience was OK I would probably give them another try and order something else. Their tres leche was very good and moist though (that gives it an extra star rating.)

Cocina Superior is a beautiful restaurant, truly one of the most attractive spaces in Birmingham. The restaurant smells of fresh tortillas which gets very high points and the service was excellent. The centerpiece of the dining room is a gorgeous glass bar. I ordered the lump crabmeat enchiladas which were a disappointment. The crab was an underwhelming mush of small pieces and the sauce was very bland. The enchiladas were served with a small salad and rice. The rice was excellent - tender and flavorful. The salad was mixed greens tossed with a sweet vinaigrette. Really, the rice was the shining component. The odd thing is that they are going for an upscale vibe, yet the bar is covered up with televisions. That's a huge turnoff for me. Cool place? Absolutely. Authentic Mexican? No Overall experience? B-

It is very rare that I will give a place only one star. They really have to earn it. I came here with my gf who lives in Birmingham (I was just visiting). Despite some negative Yelp reviews about the service at Cocina Superior, I was excited to relax with a margarita and some Mexican-ish food. We were seated and promptly provided chips and salsa. The restaurant was about half full, not a bad crowd for a Monday night (Paul Finebaum was signing books across the street). We snacked on the chips and salsa and waited for our server, but no server ever came. After about ten minutes, I tried to get the attention of a manager, but the only one that I saw looked busy in the back and he never came out to the floor of the restaurant. After fifteen minutes, we were incredibly annoyed by not even being greeted by a server, so we left. I can't comment on the food, because I never got to try any of it -- except for the chips and salsa. But the chips were appropriately salted.

Beautiful restaurant. Disappointing food. I ordered my food to go and went with the appetizer platter rather than an entree. It should have been a small sampler of many different items. Instead, it was cheese in soft tortilla shells just wrapped three different ways. Nothing was seasoned nor spiced. I literally stared at the food trying to understand how this could seriously be on their menu. Bland, bland and more bland. The chips they gave me were fine, but the salsa was just watered down tomato sauce. It was the opposite of any kind of Mexican food I've ever had. Very disappointing meal.

This place is extremely delicioso! My wife and I love the great staff and margaritas! I always get the chimichanga, which is so delicioso and not to greasy! All the food is cooked just right and not to greasy. Great for brunch, lunch, and dinner! The restaurant is beautifully designed and located in a great shopping center, we've been here numerous times and this place has yet to fail us! We'll be back again!

The atmosphere is perfect. You come here for the scene rather than the food. Even if you sit outside with your date and want to watch the game, they have flat screens in every angle possible. If food could be annoying, this is it. The chips are thin, break easily when you apply any kind of pressure, and my salsa ended up being a pool of tiny broken chips. I gave up. The salsa is spicy but you can ask to have a milder sauce. We ordered the taco salad to share which was as equally frustrating to eat. Use the taco shell to eat the fillings because there's no way that the leftover chips from your salsa graveyard will survive here. By the end of the meal I was using a fork to scoop everything.

Lunch w/my awesome daughter here was a good dining experience. The menu is pretty typical Tex-Mex fare, presented in a nice setting. The food was good, the enchilada sauce was especially good. Service was good, attentive without being overbearing. I wish I could give 3.5 stars.....

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place. It looks like a classy establishment but it's not stuffy or uncomfortable. You could watch the Alabama basketball game while you eat your dinner if you're into that. They describe themselves as modern tex mex, and I think that's a pretty accurate description. They have a large selection of menu items. We ordered the shrimp and crab stuffed avocados as a starter and they were tasty, I'd recommend trying them. Definitely check it out if you end up hungry after shopping at Brookwood Village.

Had a poor experience here last night. From the very beginning I knew the service was going to be poor. It started with the waiter asking our party of 8 what we wanted to drink from one side of the long table. Naturally, he was having problems hearing what we were saying, and instead of walking around to each person, just kept shouting "what?" in a rude manner. He was very impatient and not at all helpful to some in our party who had questions about the menu. Could not answer a simple question regarding whether a particular wine was sweet or not, and did not offer to ask the bartender. Just said "I don't know." When the food came out, he brought my dad chicken we he had ordered beef. When my dad mentioned this, the waiter said "no, you ordered chicken", and walked away. Excuse me? Unacceptable, really. Even if he had been right and my dad said chicken originally (not the case), he should have simply apologized and offered to bring out the beef instead. My dad was really nice about it and told him "oh, ok". But I was furious, and made sure to tell him that you don't treat customers that way. He smiled and chuckled, and walked off. I also received poor service at the bar. I went to order a sweet wine for my mother, who still wanted it from earlier. The bartender said "I don't think we have sweet wines", and proceeded to grab a drink menu and literally toss it at me and walk away. Wtf? We were celebrating a birthday. When they brought the cake, our waiter brought too few spoons, then just disappeared. I ate my cake with a knife until finally I just got up and tracked someone down to get a spoon. Finally, and perhaps most ridiculously, was his response when we asked for a couple of boxes for the cake. The cake was extremely large and add about an inch worth of liquid cream at the bottom of the platter it was on. He responded that we should just take it out like it was and that we could "keep the platter". Aside from the fact that it would be utterly ridiculous to try to transport a large cake with no lid and cream sloshing around everywhere, yet again he said it in a rude and sort of argumentative way. The food was ok but overpriced by some distance. Similar to what you would get in a strip mall Mexican place, but about 3x as expensive.

The food is overpriced given the quality of the ingredients and preparation. The shrimp tacos were priced near $20, but were below the quality of a standard taqueria. The tacos were very minimalist, the shells appeared to be the generic frozen variety, and the shrimp (while seasoned reasonably well) were overcooked and a bit tough. A fair price for the food would be about $8. The atmosphere was big and inviting, and the staff members were very nice. There seems to be a consensus among the yelpers: average food quality, poor value, nice atmosphere. I wouldn't refuse to visit this place again if someone really wanted to go there, but I would never recommend it.

Pretty good food and chips and queso. I really liked the ambiance and the music, the staff was really friendly and pretty quick as well. Only a 4/5 because they could've been a little nicer about bringing the check since we were in a time crunch but overall, I recommend the restaurant and would go back!

Well, I've come here off and on for a number of years. Usually to meet a group, rarely on my own. But not till today did I realize the character and deception of this place. Let's start with Happy Hour. This is the first place in my many years that surreptitiously charges higher prices at happy hour. When you read the menu, it seems that it is the opposite, but , oh, the sleight of hand. Our young and honest waitress acknowledged that it was pure deception, and stated that they were fuller, but not with more tequila. Also, the very good cheese dip we took home to our kids was less that 1/2 what you get in the restaurant despite the same high price of $8. And the manager coming by to asks if we're ok, "bro," was quite strange, given that I'm probably 25 years his senior. My last time unless with a group by request.

Just got home from Cosina, have been going there for many years and it was always good. They have changed!!! We were overcharged for drinks and overcharged for entrees. Questioned the bartender Anna and said she had to talk to the manager. After waiting along time the manager came out blamed everything on the bartender and took off $4 charge for ice. Would not change the extra charge for entree or drinks. Beware!! Check your bill. Did not want to give a copy of receipt until I raised cane. Do not spend your good money here!!!!

So terrible!!!! Worst customer service I have received!! I will not be back! Food was gross deep fried in week old grease. The manager has a terrible attitude, he needs to go to chick Fil a and learn about customer service! I will go to Chuy's from now on, they have awesome drinks, food and service.

To whom it may concern/ Cocina Superior Management, I am writing to inform your establishment my disappointment with the service provided at Cocina Superior. I dined at your restaurant on 10/4/2013. My bill indicates the time was 22:04, with a group of eight friends (9 total). Our server was Juan M. Juan was very rude to our party. When we asked any questions about the menu he gave short responses and abruptly walked off, our water and other drinks were never refilled, he didn't follow up with us after bringing us our food. He didn't even follow up with us to inquire if we wanted dessert. We had to track him down through another server to obtain our check. We didn't feel that he deserved any tip at all, but to our dismay 18% gratuity was included on our individual checks. We weren't able to stay and speak to a manager because we had another appointment following dinner. I'm not sure if I will return to this establishment, as it was my first time dining here. I would hope that management speaks to Juan, and encourages him to understand that even if gratuity is included that is no excuse to provide poor customer service to paying consumers. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter. So how did this letter end up on YELP? When I tried to email info@thecocinasuperior.c… , it bounced back. So I couldn't find a manager that night or send an email the next day. So I decided to go to my 'sent' and copy and paste it here. GO figure. I won't be returning.

My first time for 2 stars. I think chefs/line cooks should taste the food they prepare. After a long wait, I had shrimp tacos that had consistency of oatmeal - almost indescribable. My bartender readily exchanged it for pork tamales suffocated in cornmeal mounds and then covered with beef(?) sauce. Beer was cold. Decor was nice yet a bit loud.

Cocina Superior is a great tex-mex choice on the outer perimeter of Brookwood Village mall. Their quality is a cut above most Mexican style restaurants. So are the prices, but you get what you pay for. Chips are crisp and not greasy--and salsa is spiced just right. They have the usual selection of Fajitas, burritos, and taco salad (huge!). The fish tacos are an excellent choice. At lunch they have what they call "lite" specials which may not be that low in calories, but are the perfect size for lunch so that you don't feel overstuffed. The lunch Ricardo on the "lite" lunch menu which includes two beef quesadilla quarters, a small chimichanga, rice, and beans is my particular favorite and reasonably priced at $9.95. Cocina Superior is a popular place for happy hour seven days a week. They have a great selection of margaritas including their signature pomegranate which is excellent (and potent!). The restaurant has a casual modern atmosphere with both inside and patio seating. It's a great place to come with friends, a date, or a group--or if you just need some good Mexican comfort food (and beverage!).

Let me Start this off by saying this is the best salsa I have found in town. My friends and I went through almost 2 bowls of it. Before anyone gets angry about "best salsa" awards I'm giving out, hear me on this: I like roasted red pepper salsa with cilantro and onions. I love thin, non-chunky salsa. So, with that in mind, I found one I like here in town. Which is why this place gets 4 stars. The food was decent. I think I mis-ordered to be honest. If anyone has a good recommendation for street tacos in Birmingham, please let me know because they were not here. However, whatever my friends ordered (chimichangas, shrimp flautas, and the nachos) looked and tasted bomb. Now, this place is overpriced for sure. Don't come here expecting to spend $10. You're spending at least $18-30 if you're by yourself and easily over $50 if you're on a date. Keep that in mind. Final words: friendly staff, tasty food, awesome chips and salsa, but... Be ready to open your pocketbook!

Modern Tex-Mex with a classy atmosphere. My boyfriend raves on the chicken tortilla soup, but my meal didn't come with it. He scarfed it down in about two minutes, though! I got the ground beef taco salad, and it was probably the best taco salad I've ever had. The crema that they use as salad dressing was the bomb, I couldn't get enough. The tortilla shell bowl was nice and crispy. The rest of my table seemed to enjoy their food too. 4 stars from me because the food was good, but it wasn't particularly stand-out.

If i could base a star rating on location and aesthetics vs quality of the food I would separate these out. The restaurant itself has a great feel, good location, and is quite nice to be in and I would rank that a 4 star. The food however, while it's good, is incredibly overpriced in my opinion. I've been here twice now and have left both times feeling I could have had the same quality tex-mex for easily half the price at other Mexican establishments here in town. If you are looking for a fun place with a good vibe and energy and drinks, this would be a good choice, assuming you aren't terribly concerned about your final bill as compared to the quality of the food you received.

The best day to go is on Sunday.. Happy hour on sundays. The margaritas are awesome... its 9 for the house margarittas. The food and service is excellent but pricey. I love the location and the patio is the place to be. If you are inside its a little loud for me. Be careful... the margaritas will mess you up.... they are delecious and you can drink them up until you stand... then it all hits you...... be careful and enjoy!

I'm with the rest of the Yelp crew on this one: it's a pretty spot, but that's about it. I've passed this spot at least a half dozen times on the way to Brio, but I decided to detour and see what else Brookwood had to offer. The answer? Pretty average. Thr food wasn't bad... but it wasn't superior either. I had the Chipotle shrimp but it really wasn't what I envisioned. Cheesy but not really Chipotle peppery and the shrimp were a bit smallish as well. The fish tacos were also at the table, but the verdict there was also underwhelming in terms of flavor. To me, just about any Tex Mex spot can pull off a cache of margaritas. But my question inevitably is this: so what are you going to serve WITH them? Cocina Superior? Uh, more like "cool story, bro."

Front of the house is super friendly. The waiter was super slow. Went there at lunch and waited on water for 15 minutes. We were served our food 56 minutes after we walked in the door. They were not slammed just slow service. The food is always good though. If you aren't pressed for time this is a pretty good Mexican restaurant although I've had better.

Overall great food, great service and great margaritas. However, every time I have gone they have adjusted my tip (even though I left cash and 20%). This past time by 8 dollars. Ridiculous. Especially since it's pricey already.

I had high hopes when the white linens were on the table as I sat down. By the time I was brought chips and salsa, I'd already reviewed the menu and I knew what I want. So when the waitress stopped by to see if I had any questions, "I'm ready to order" either threw her off or it gave her the impression that I was in some sort of rush. Why do I think that she thought I was rushed? Because my main arrived before I'd taken five bites of the starter and then she set the check down before I'd even repositioned the plates so I could start my main. Bad form, dearie. It left me thinking that "No, I will have my second beer somewhere else." How was the food? Chips were salted appropriately and I found the salsa to be a bit too wet though the spice level was good. I had chosen the shrimp and crab stuffed avocados. Interesting concept. I'm not sure where the "stuffed" part of this description arrives but it was tasty. Sort of a fried crabcake (with shrimp!) topped with pico de gallo and then placed onto a plate with a green chile pureed avocado sauce. Messy, but tasty. I'd have this again. As I mentioned, a few moments later the main course arrived. I'd gone with the fish tacos. I'm not quite sure why this had to be served on a piping hot plate since all it did was make the handmade tortillas way too hot to pick up. I did the knife & fork thing because the huge piece of fish in the tortilla was different and messy. It was plated nicely and it was certainly flavorful. No dessert or a second beer. I left after paying my check. Decent meal, service felt rushed. I'm not sure I would return.

If you are looking for Tex-Mex this is THE spot in Birmingham. With chic and lively decor you would think you were somewhere in California not Birmingham, AL. This is a great casual spot for friends and family to get some wonderful Tex-Mex fare in a fun and vibrant atmosphere. The wait staff are great and extremely attentive. I've held and attended many different private dinners and lunches here and it is one of my go-to spots for a group dinner. It is affordable and delicious food that is sure to please all your friends. Ask for a table on the patio, especially if the weather is nice. You will not be disappointed. Try one their Puffy Tacos, very interesting and pretty tasty. And they literally have the best chips and salsa of anywhere in Birmingham. Perfect chips, just perfect.

We stopped for a mid-afternoon lunch for some Tex-Mex. It had been recommended by my son who had dined here during his travels. The food was great... I had the fried fish tacos. The initial chips and salsa... the chips were unremarkable and the salsa was weak and had the consistency of water. I like thick chips and thick salsa. So it goes. The restaurant was spacious and the staff was attentive. Televisions dotted the walls so we were able to watch some college football. I will dine here again but I won't go our of my way to do so.

I have met friends here for Cinco de Mayo for the past 4-5 years. The food and service has always been very good even when it wasn't Cinco de Mayo. But next year, we may have to find somewhere else to meet. Our service was a bit different than usual this year. The waiter seemed distracted and inattentive. For example, the waiter brought us our checks when we weren't ready. And my friend ordered a 2nd drink after we finished our meals but the waiter didn't hear her. The poor service became apparent when our waiter said, "You know there are a lot of people waiting for a table." We couldn't believe our ears. It will be a while before I return. This place is a bit pricey but love the decor.

By far my favorite Tex-Mex in Birmingham/ possibly favorite restaurant period The steak fajitas are a great basic, and the salmon del mar with green rice is delicious... Queso and chips are yummy too.

While I wouldn't describe this place as "authentic," it is pretty good, especially for Mexican food in the Birmingham area. The carnitias appetizers are good, and so is the tortilla soup. The frozen mojitos are excellent. My only complaint is that it is a little pricey. Come here for lunch and sit outside.

Usually, I don't have too many nice things to say about tex-mex - especially expensive upscale tex-mex found at a mall, but the food at Cocina Superior is excellent. I had the best ribeye fajitas ever!! The fresh, made to order, corn tortillas were softer than any flour one I've ever had. The meat was seasoned to perfection and practically melted in your mouth. I didn't get to taste the food other people ordered (everything looked yummy though) because I was too busy licking my plate!!!

this place is always a fun experience. weather i am with family or friends, it i am there to have drinks or to have a sit down dinner, Cocina is one of my favorite spots in Birmingham. this Tex Mex menu has a lot to offer. no matter what i order, i am never disappointed and the drinks are the best i can say that the bar tenders at Cocina can make great drinks. my favorite is mohitto and they make the best mohitto i have ever tried anywhere and on Sunday when there for brunch i love to order sangria it's the best. when in Birmingham one must visit this lively atmosphere where all the waiters are very inviting and you always feel full at your belly :)

While Cocina Superior isn't my favorite mexican restaurant in the Hoover/Homewood/Mountain Brook/Vestavia area, its not the worst either. The setting is very upscale and modern with clean lines framing a dining room that pumps out upbeat music. The bar area is beautiful and from what I saw the liquor selection was also copious. The food itself was good (I've had the fajitas and the tacos before), though a tad bit pricey. The appetizers left a little to be desired as the guacamole dip was sub par. The service was great both times I've been and overall this restaurant is a slightly pricey, yet trendy alternative for a good dinner.

Cocina Superior is going for the upscale mexican thing. Went recently with a large group on a slow night of the week and was less than impressed with the service. One couple at our table got steak & chicken fajitas and they looked pretty horrible. Not even the signature fajita sizzle. I got the Mahi Mahi dish and it was pretty good but I had to ask for the soup that was supposed to come with my meal. Overall the ambiance is pretty cool but not worth some of the other issues we had that night.

Take your business ELSEWHERE! I have never seen restaurant service this terrible in my entire life. It was so bad that I was tempted to get up and leave during the meal. Appetizers: chicken tortilla soup, chargrilled oysters were awesome. Family and I are having a great time socializing after a day of shopping. We get some refills and wait about 20-25 min after we place our order for our food. DISASTER STARTS NOW! The kitchen runner begins to serve our food from the tray. Our waitress was taking drink orders at the next table. The runner tells her to finish serving the food as he needed to get back. Her untrained skills showed as she maneuvered around our food sitting on the tray to go get 8 drinks for that other table instead of serving our food. As she comes back to give them their drinks, her assistant sees us trying to get her attention and realizes that our food was left there. From the moment they arrived at our table, it took over 4 minutes for a "Poncho" and 2 steak fajitas to be served. ~2 min later, our waitress asked how was everything to which my sister responded "It's been interesting" with an attitude and she responds "Oh, really?" We then saw her drop our plastic takeout container on the floor and still give it to us like nothing was wrong. Summary: I've been to Chuy's in Nashville and would rather try the Summit's location than waste my time & money here.

Cocina Superior 587 Brookwood Village Birmingham Al 205-259-1980 We had a wonderful evening at Cocina Superior last night. The facility is clean and nicely decorated with indoor and outdoor seating. Covered and uncovered available outdoor. Our server was Jesus and he was very friendly, knowledgable and helpful as well. We had the Cocina Oysters which are to die for! They were plump, juicy and full of rich buttery goodness. I'm not sure how they shuck but there seemed to be more pieces of shell than is customarily found. None the less fabulous though! We accompanied with their margarita on the rocks and a skinny margarita too. Both tasted good on the rocks with the regular margarita having more of a bite that the skinny. For entrees we then ordered the shrimp brochettes and chile relleno both entrees were delivered fairly quick and were more than enough for two. The presentation and flavors blended nicely and there was lots of cheese! All in all a great evening and I'll definitely be going back to Cocina Superior. Urban Cowgill

I have not been to Cocina Superior in years. Thought we'd try it after The Nutcracker last weekend, and we should have thought twice. The bar scene was a disappointment (as was the bartender who told me that he was a raging alcoholic), the service is better at Taco Bell, and food was awful. Let me start with, well ... the drinks - Good a place as any to get the "stylish" "vibrant" and "sleek" (their words, not mine) dining experience started, right? If you're running the bar at a mexican place that is supposed to be worth its salt in the up and coming market, then you gotta kinda be aware of the cool beers out there - All of them. Especially MEXICAN BEERS. Dude didn't know what a Victoria was. And worse, he just kinda stared at us when we ordered it. Then came my margarita. Cocina Superior bills itself as being a stylish place with a full service bar, "THE place to enjoy the latest cocktail". Tell me, someone, please ... how can I enjoy the "latest" in margaritas if you have only three high end (and, yes I'm lumping Patron in there - just to give them a break) tequilas to choose from and THEN tell me that your margarita is pre-mixed? Wait. What? WHAAAAAT? Exactly. Now we move to the food ... I ordered the spinach and chicken enchiladas ($15.50). They were dry - so dry that I didn't eat more than half of one - and they tasted like cardboard. The dollop of green rice it was served with was equally as tasteless and dry. Poor choice on my part, perhaps? I guess I would have expected a sauce of some sort IN the enchilada holding it together ... or one on the outside would have been nice, too. For fifteen fifty - I would have expected SOMEthing other than what I got. We also tried the Guacamole Mexicano and the Chile con Queso ($5.95 - a fair price for the size). The guac was good - just nothing special, and for $6.25, I want either special or plentiful - this was neither and served in a small salsa bowl. The Chile con Queso had good spice - they get one star for that and the fact that they have pretty tasty flour tortillas. Other than that, I can't, in good conscience, give this place more than that one, small, yellow-ish-green star up there, sadly. Because I really wanted it to work out for them in my little Yelp-land. There are other tex-mex joints around town to satiate your need for the cuisine!

STAY AWAY PLEASE! Terrible service, clueless staff, rude management, lackluster food, soupy salsa. I did better going to Taco Bell. Get a clue Cocina, you are steadily losing customers because of your lousy service and food. Take some pointers from your neighbor Brio's, they know how to treat customers and prepare food correctly!

    (1)
  • Susan C.

Overrated! Menu is creative but very overpriced - steak and shrimp fajitas for $23! The chips are deliciously thin and warm, and the cocktail menu has lots of temptations, but to me it's not worth the wait and the price.

I am Mexican from California, and have tried all kinds of Mexican food good and bad. The food here is actually pretty good, I have had various tacos and I really like the homemade corn tortillas they serve. I also liked the shirmp tacos I ordered here a while back, the shrimp tasted fresh. Chips and Salsa they serve here are decent as well. The bar is somewhat of a scene. I will definitely come back here when I travel to the area again.

I like this place. It's not the best mexican food I've ever had, but the salsa is pretty good (not the crappy kind from a can that most places serve) and the food is also pretty good. Decently priced for lunch, but I'm not sure about the evening. worth trying out if you like mexican food.

Typical of many popular Tex-Mex restaurants in Birmingham, Cocina Superior has its good days and its poor days in the week, especially in terms of attention from the wait staff. I don't let that bother me too much, because I usually just enjoy the company I'm with, but almost every trip has resulted in someone at the table having something wrong: a messed up order, an unsatisfactory drink, a really hard time getting the waitress to address a situation, etc. I've personally found the food to be good, but not what I would consider worth the price -- basically about the same that I could find somewhere else for a more reasonable price -- but have always chalked it up to "paying for the atmosphere." I'm not going to frequent this place often, but I wouldn't say no to going back.

  • Joe M.

Hmmm. Should be better. Chips are too thin and no salt. Salsa too much like tomato sauce with stuff. I am a chip a salsa junkie, so i eat too many usually but even I stopped. House Margarita was fair at best and mostly ice served in a cheesy "happy hour" plastic water glass I used on picnics when I was a kid. More like UnHappy Hour, but I didn't even stay an hour. A Mexican restaurant should at least have a reasonable margarita. I use the relatively inexpensive tequila at home for margaritas and they are way better. Tortilla sopa was good but not great. It least it was hot. Too bad I ordered the black bean sopa, but service at the bar was not fantastic and seemed easier to just eat it. I ordered the brisket soft tacos. Exceedingly bland soft taco with brisket and grease. The rice was plain and the side of salsa? it was not even interesting. I was not impressed with this place and will not bother to return. The location is good but better choices right in the same parking lot. 2 stars for location and atmosphere.

Come for drinks, chips, queso fundido, salsa and the guacamole. Stay for friends and a nice relaxed and fun atmosphere. The entrees were less impressive and most expensive! For a good Mexican meal, there are better and cheaper places in the 'hood.

Really good food. Really great bar. Really awesome crowd. This is a great place to go with Friends for drinks and great food. My favorite thing in the world is the frozen mojito. It is one heck of a drink. The chile relleno was a surprise hit for me. I thought it would be a little to "tex-mexed" out but it was one of the best. Perfectly grilled carne asada graced the inside of a huge poblano pepper. It had great spice and great flavor. All of the ingredients shined though. None were masked by too much cheese as it so often happens at mexican joints. I have never been disappointed in the quality of the food or the service.

Being from Texas, I was a bit skeptical at the offering of "Modern Texmex". However, as soon as I sat down, I immediately felt comfortable with my first chip full of queso. Something definitely seemed familiar. The frozen Mojito was tasty and the Margarita was strong as proclaimed by my dining partner. When our food arrived, I quickly realized why I felt so comfortable. Could it be? Has anyone heard of the Pappasito's Mexican restaurant chain in Texas? The queso sure was close; the salsa was definitely a cousin, the rice exactly the same and the Carne Asada tacos were even served with a similar garlic butter sauce. Although there was a lack of originality, (seriously, table side guacamole is no longer modern) the food was good, but just couldn't help thinking I have had this meal before, just not at Cocina Superior. The atmosphere had a buzz of relaxation and enjoyment and was a mix of after work professionals and desperate housewives. It was a Tuesday after all. The restaurant felt open, but not overwhelmingly large and featured a great patio to enjoy the spring night. The wait staff (although our server was young and seemingly inexperienced) was friendly and provided adequate service. Overall, a good experience and I'll be back when I am craving a recognizable meal from back home.

Great atmosphere for getting together with friends/family or even for a nice date! The tex-mex style food is some of the best in town, especially the queso appetizer. Their homemade salsa has a delicious and unique flavor. During happy hour the drinks are bigger and stronger, a great deal! The service is fast and friendly! I will definitely be back there!

Food was OK but would have been as good in a far cheaper place. The dining area is large and loud, so loud that none of our group could hear each other (on an weeknight no less). The bar area is ample and I counted 17 TVs from the door area. If I was going somewhere to watch a game this might work but not for dinner. Just an OK experience.

Overall great food, great service and great margaritas. However, every time I have gone they have adjusted my tip (even though I left cash and 20%). This past time by 8 dollars. Ridiculous. Especially since it's pricey already.

Better than expected, there are not too many places where i actually enjoy the Mexican rice. Food was very good and fresh. I had the shrimp tacos, sauce was great too. Will be back soon.

I like this place. It's not the best mexican food I've ever had, but the salsa is pretty good (not the crappy kind from a can that most places serve) and the food is also pretty good. Decently priced for lunch, but I'm not sure about the evening. worth trying out if you like mexican food.

  • Susan C.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
