Ate here again...this is my second time, hubby's third. It was packed! By the middle of the meal, there was a wait for a table on a Thursday at 6pm...that must tell you something. I wanted to try a regular appetizer since Josh was gonna order all sushi for his meal. We chose the Spring Rolls- yummy. Too bad there were only two. But they were stuffed full, not the half ass stuffed that you get at some places. Oh and the bread is delish. Not sure what type it is but perfectly soft and doughy inside with a crunchy outer layer. Since I remember enjoying the crab cake on the seafood platter last time I decided to order the full entree of crab cakes. I am happy with that decision. It was served with mashed potatoes and asparagus but I opted to just get double veggie. The plate had two gigantic crab cakes filled with lots of large, fresh chunks of crab on top of just enough creamy, spicy sauce. I cleaned my plate and was stuffed. Hubby order three sushi rolls. Two were eel and then the rainbow roll. He liked it but said it was as good as the last two times he had their sushi. I love eel so I had to get a sample. THis is why I deducted the star...there was a crunchy shell in one of the eel rolls...the chef must have not gotten the crab shell completely off before adding it to the roll. So it sucks having to pull shell out of your mouth after biting into a lovely roll that you want to be so good. Tastes and freshness still there but not awesomeness sushi like before. Overall. We are fans of this place. We call it the Ocean of Shelby County. I still say OCean is my all time favorite seafood spt but if I don't feel like making reservations and driving all the way downtown and valet parking then it is off to Chuck's.

Chuck's Fish is an excellent seafood restaurant in Birmingham. The decor is lovely and inviting and the food is outstanding. All 3 members of my party raved about their specific entrees, though we did not try any of the appetizers, deserts, or sushi. The dishes are put together very well and while the portions are not what I would call large, they were a little bigger than what I find at most fine dining establishments. That being said, I'd still grab an appetizer if you walk in hungry. One thing I should note that is if you visit while it is crowded, the restaurant can be very noisy. If you are looking for a quiet, intimate dinner for two, you will want to pick a late hour. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived a few minutes after 8 on a Tuesday. The food and service were very good to excellent and the prices were fair. I would definitely recommend and visit again.

I think the collective word we used for this place was: pretentious. First sign: only open for "dinner service." I think half a year ago they toyed with opening for lunch on Fridays or something but went to back to their post-happy-hour hours. The website is pretty good for a preview but when you get there it is like the center of yuppieness. You walk in and you think you just walked into a hotel restaurant. There is a main bar to the side with ginormous wine rack and the hostess (who further reminds you of conference management) asks if you have reservations. And then you suddenly get all self-conscious and wonder if they think you're underdressed (despite wearing a button down and khakis). Yes my friends, this place feels like it wants to tack on the word "business" to "casual". Ok now off to the table (or the sushi bar). The menu is pretty relatively small if you are just there for sushi like we were (the other half of the restaurant is your typical American seafood/steak place). The beer selection was barely passable. No Asahi Super Dry? And the silly state bans 22oz beers so you are limited there as well. The seaweed salad was pretty good, reminiscent of Legal Seafoods and way better than the stuff you get at buffets. Whitney's ginger salad looked awesome though, and I sort of wished I had ordered that (more food, same $4). I got a Spider Roll, a Spicy Octopus Roll, and the following nigiri: Tuna, Salmon, and Yellowtail. The spicy octopus roll was probably the least interesting. The Spider Roll came with a big fried crab claw sticking out of it. The yellowtail was nice (and apparently they had to check if they had any, even though they serve the farmed version). But overall for the price I was paying, I felt underwhelmed. I would rank it above SPR 5 Points and below Surin 280. I think this places tries too hard. Plus they killed the ILoveSushi next door sometime last year. Bottom line: I can only see coming back here if someone else wants to pay for it.

Overpriced food! It's ok, don't get me wrong, but is very underwhelming, given how expensive it is. Ate at the bar and the bartender was completely clueless, although she said she had been there a long time. Very limited alcohol selection. Will not be going back. Ever.

Wow this was great food!!! Sashimi, sushi, etc like being in San Fran or new York right off the plane!!!! Awesome fresh fish right from the gulf etc... nice wine list, awesome apps, entree was superbly prepared and seasoned. Wait? I am in Birmingham Ala friggin bama? Yes great food here, well done. Service was absolutely faultless.

Excellent food and all local from the gulf . I read the history of the owner and all fish is hook / line caught from the gulf fresh . This is a rare treat in Birmingham and it shows in the quality. The dishes seemed well thought out with out too much extra as to overload the plate. I had the shrimp and grits which was excellent and I would recommend this to anyone. My wife had the crab cakes which were filled.with chucks of crab but the filling was a but too mushy and cakey. The waiter was very nice and attentive. Good atmosphere except I read another yelp review before we went which was a complaint about how rude the host was at the door. Upon first arriving we did not have reservations (and did not need them) but were greater with a stern "do you have reservations " from a gentleman next to the hosted who clearley was already in the process of seating us. Beyond that excellent and will return.

Good cocktails, I'm a big fan of the Cucumber Collins. Great sushi, try the Kaos and Red Dragon rolls. Tuna sashimi was especially good tonight and the seafood salad is superb. Consistent, high quality fine dining experience which is hard to come by.

Terrible dining experience from beginning to end. The only bright spot was the waitress who tried valiantly to redeem this food. Pork empanadas on special for the evening. They were tragic. Pork tasted like it was reheated after several days of leftovers. The mango chili sauce was good there just wasn't any of it. The waitress tried again for us with the uptown shrimp--their most popular app. So over cooked the shrimp were hard. The stuffed shrimp entree was over cooked as well and sides were forgettable. Not likely to return. To my waitress--ur good go somewhere else.

I remembered tonight why we visit Chuck's so infrequently. We shared 1 appetizer, my husband had a salad, we each had an entree, dessert and coffee. My red snapper portion was only about 3 - 4 oz. I will say that everything was very good, as was the service. It was just that the portions we had were so tiny! It just was not very much for the money. I will spend my dinner dollars elsewhere.

Still only 4 stars because of the noise level and the "snob" level... Ask for Samuel V. he was the waiter we had and I will ask for him on my next visit.

I was very disappointed. We had a girls night here and it was a complete letdown. The waiter was moving fast but to no avail, we were constantly out of drinks etc. The app came out in record time but there was at least 40 mins before the entrees came out. And in the meantime we kept running out of beverages. Then 2 of the girls ordered wine at the same time and when they put them down on the table one was about a third less than the other. for the money we spent, it should have been a better experience.

Although this is a 'fine dining' restaurant, I came here for the sushi. Why? Because when I looked at the menu online, I saw A LOT of different rolls to choose from, and there was a disclaimer that the rolls came from Yoshie Eddings, and the sushi chefs were trained by her as well... she's pretty much our regional celebrity chef. And I figured if her family owns sushi restaurants in Japan, then this was something worth trying. I had the Dharma Roll (conch, shrimp, crab stick, smelt roe and cucumber with spicy sauce) and the KAOS roll (Tuna, avocado and green onions, spicy sauce, crab salad and chili sauce). While both the rolls tasted okay, I was left feeling like I had been cheated. I wanted something more. Unfortunately not only was the presentation quite plain and uninspiring, my mouth was pretty much underwhelmed. With the ingredients both rolls had, they really could have turned them into something beautiful, but instead they were just simply rolled up together and cut. I was looking forward to the conch, but couldn't even tell the difference between the conch, shrimp or crab. It all looked the same. It all tasted the same. I also had a ginger salad, which was very pretty and tasted good, so no complaints there. And the bread that was brought to the table was quite good. My friend Peter L ordered rolls and sashimi... I won't comment on his food, he will write his own review. The decor was nice and the service was friendly and attentive. The sushi menu itself was quite affordable. I'd go back and try something else if they were opened for lunch, because the dinner crowd was loud and the restaurant was dark and it is just a little too fancy for my tastes... but if someone wants to go here I won't say no. In fact I would probably try something off the dinner menu, I did see smoked tuna dip that I wouldn't mind trying. Hmm. Who knows.

I've been to Chuck's since it opened. As of the past year and a half I've visited quite frequently and with no disappointment. Never, have I had an issue with any item I've ever ordered. Sometimes we'll eat just sushi or get sushi as an appetizer and order entrees, just depends. They have several great craft cocktails as well. Chris and Terry do an outstanding job of cranking out sushi for the entire restaurant, while juggling interaction with their clientele at the sushi bar. The entire staff is very attentive from managers to servers. I personally love the ambiance chuck's sets with low lighting, candle lit tables, and the lack of an abundance of fluorescent lighting. The food is top notch, from the ribeye to the stuffed shrimp, you can't go wrong. To finish off your meal, the deserts are all great (I suggest the white chocolate bread pudding, trust me, and they usually have a home made cheesecake of some sort). I'd give Chuck's 8 stars if I could.

What a sushi smorgasbord we had tonight! I had Chuck's sushi Chef's Chris and Terry serve a feast of assorted sushi. Do yourself a favor if you like sushi and ask the sushi Chef's Chris and or Terry to just fix you whatever they would fix themselves that's fresh. We started with miso soup, seaweed salad & edamame. Very Good! We then had octopus and yellow fin tuna salad made that Chef Chris made up with spicy with chili & sesame oil, cucumbers, etc. Fabulous! We also had fat slices of tuna on rice with spices accompanied with a fresh water ell hand rolls that were absolutely delicious! Best Sushi in town!

Another great dinner at Chuck's this evening. We go with another couple every few months. This meal was no different than the others. The crab cakes were great. The fresh fish of the day was very well prepared (Mahi). The sushi was like always - expertly done. All we can say is thank you... Every time we visit we know that it will be a consistent enjoyable meal. See you in September.

Chuck's has some of the best sushi in town. My favorite rolls are the Amazon, Roll Tide, and Rainbow. The service on the other hand leaves something to be desired. During my most recent visit I sat at the bar and was "attended" to by the bartender, Brittany. My girlfriend and I seemed to be more of an annoyance than welcomed guests. I asked for miso soup (which is complimentary at the sushi bar) and Brittany stated that there would be a charge. When I asked if I could walk over to the sushi bar to get a complimentary bowl for myself she stated that "it's not very expensive". I love the food at Chuck's but I advise getting a table or sitting at the sushi bar. I've encountered Brittany and her lack of enthusiasm on more than one occasion but I won't make the mistake of sitting at her bar again.

For some reason Chuck's Fish thinks they are the "it" place to dine here in N. Shelby County - I think not. I have tried, ever since they opened, to love this place, but the food, atmosphere and attitude of the hostess and one of the bartenders seems to continually fall short of simple expectations. The place is terribly loud, for starters. But the menu and service are what really turn me off. I realize that some items, like the Uptown Shrimp, have to remain on the menu if they're all time favorites, but menu doesn't change and the entrees are getting old and "tired". At between $6 (spring rolls) and $15, the appetizer menu is very high priced. Basic, no frills salads are $6-$8, and my wedge (how do you screw up a wedge?) was served with soggy, sticky lettuce and smothered in dressing. I have opted for a pc of fish the past few times we have tried Chuck's (which are at market price), but the last two times we visited, it was clear that the bartender had put the order in at the same time she put our sushi and salad order in because the sushi and salad came out at the same time, and my fish was barely room temp, and dry like it had been sitting there a while. You have to watch out for the specials - There's always something that sounds absolutely wonderful and when you get the bill, you're in shock! I will agree that the sushi menu is vast - There are probably 40 rolls on the menu which range from $9-$16 (and you can also get Nigiri and Sashimi) - But it's terribly unappetizing when it comes to the table - the poor plating is a non starter for me! One could definitely plate sushi up to be something creative and cool - they don't even try here. It's just a roll cut up and plopped onto a plate. And if you're with others (we were with another couple), they ENTIRE sushi order came out on a plate together. I had no idea what I was eating because it all looked and tasted the same. If all that doesn't get you the clientele will --- you're going to get an eyeful of the 60 year old cougars dry humping the "i just got back from the gym" 40-somethings at the bar. ew.

Decent food and service but I'm not sure it is as good as they think it is. Nice ambience - minus the snooty, pretentious diners that seem to be drawn to this particular establishment. Overpriced for what you're getting. There is nothing wrong with Chuck's, it's just that there's not much right either. I enjoyed it, just not enough that I feel the need to go back.

I like Chuck's Fish. I went when they first opened, and I was quite disappointed. However, they have made a major turn-around. The food is good, but you don't get a lot for the price. The staff is always super friendly, and the white chocolate bread pudding alone is worth the experience.

Chuck's has a great atmosphere, awesome bar, and some of the best sushi I've ever had. It's not outrageously expensive, either. I've had almost every appetizer and love them all - especially the Uptown Shrimp. And I've yet to taste a sushi roll I didn't love (though I would never eat one named after a state - WTF is "crab sticks"?!). Get TNT, Miami Heat, Meatloaf... I don't know, get a bunch of them and then use your fork so you can eat more than everyone else at the table. Ha. But really, go. The cocktails are great, the service is always good (a dining companion felt the bar service was bitchy, but I've always liked them fine), and the sushi is unbeatable.

Stopped in without a reservation at 8pm, the place was crowded but we got immediate seating at the bar. The bartenders were knowledgeable and very helpful. All the rolls we ordered were delicious. Especially the TNT which was outstanding. Fresh ingredients and rice done just perfectly. The old fashioned I ordered was awesome as well. Highly recommend.

If all that doesn't get you the clientele will --- you're going to get an eyeful of the 60 year old cougars dry humping the "i just got back from the gym" 40-somethings at the bar. ew.

Amazing food! Impeccable service. Grilled grouper with Chardonnay, filet. Chocolate creme brûlée. Generous portions of after dinner drinks. Perfect evening.
