I'm really torn between 3 and 4 stars because the food was surprisingly good but the wait and service sucked! We arrived about midnight after a long day specifically because my husband wanted to try the 7 by 7, that's 7 patties and 7 slices of cheese, which is on their late night menu. We were seated almost immediately but throughout the time we were there it was taking a while for people to be seated because a 'hostess' was absent. He ordered the 7x7 and fries seasoned with sea salt and cracked black pepper. I ordered the Oktoberfest, which is two patties, swiss cheese, sautéed onions in tangy mustard, sliced ham on a pretzel bun. I ordered my fries seasoned with salt and vinegar. It took 40 minutes to get our food. Forty minutes for some burgers! You could tell they were so short handed. Our waitress wasn't the greatest and she was most often in the kitchen appearing to be doing prep work. There was one guy there that was super friendly and noticed we'd been waiting a while and checked on us a couple of times. At least we knew one person cared and he's the only reason service doesn't drop this rating. We were both highly impressed by our food. The burger patties are pretty thin and fairly greasy but don't lack in flavor. We both liked that they were cooked on the flat top in the right way and had crispy edges. Since the patties were so thin the 7x7 isn't quite as impressive as you'd think it would be and you almost couldn't tell there were 7 patties on it. I'm usually a single patty girl because two is usually too many but I'm glad my burger came with 2 patties or I would have been a little disappointed. My burger was so flavorful. The melted cheese, ham, and sautéed onions were great on the hamburger. The real star really seemed to be the combo of the soft pretzel bun and tangy brown mustard, it was perfect. It was one of the best 'gourmet' style burgers I've had. I like the shoe string fries though they're a little too small to dip in ketchup. The seasoning that they upcharge 29 cents for is underwhelming. Just go with the naked ones and add the Steak n Shake seasoning or salt and pepper that's on the table. Overall it appears to be a popular hangout for teens but it should be great for the whole family. Give it a try but go when you have the time to wait.

I give this place a 2 star not because the food is bad, but because the service is the worst. Every time I come here I have to wait extended amounts of time before I am waited on. Several times I am forgotten. It is normal after being seated to wait 10 minutes to be waited on. Even at the bar I was walked by several times, with no drink and not one person asked if I had been helped.

The service sucked the food was cold and when I went to speak to the shift manager (Brandon)he was extremely rude and did not seem to care about the issue he just asked me what I wanted him to do about it Im still in shock about the situation I will never eat at this location agin and I do not recommend it !!!!!

Unforgivably slow. There's no reason to have to wait 20 minutes in a 2 car line for a burger.

The last 5-6 times I have visited this location my order has been wrong. And they are simple orders. We just left with my "sausage egg and cheese biscuit". Got home and it's only sausage and it's not even hot. I think it's safe to say that I am done with this location!

I was on my way into town one morning and decided I wanted to grab something to eat for my drive. I hadn't tried Steak and Shake's breakfast so I decided to give it a try. When I pulled up to drive thru, there were only two cars ahead of me, needless to say, twenty minutes later I would finally receive my bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. I watched thru the window as they started preparing my biscuit after I had paid. It wasn't as if they just assembled it, no, they had to cook it. I was so very frustrated, that I would have pulled away, but that would have meant jumping the curb and running over some landscaping. For the review of my biscuit....well, I hate to say this, but McDonalds is way better. I don't know if it was my frustration of the time wait that tainted my opinion or not, but I ended up throwing out most of the biscuit and the tater tots were soggy and undercooked....they hit the trash as well.

Steak 'N Shake is essentially a version of Waffle House and IHOP. They have a breakfast menu that doesn't stray far from the norm. Their lunch/dinner menu has patty melts, hamburgers, and their famous chili 5-way which is spaghetti topped with chili, ground beef, onion, and shredded cheese. They differentiate themselves from the other restaurants of the like with their shakes. They have at least 20 different kinds to choose from. All in all don't go in expecting an amazing experience but also don't leave without trying a shake.

Steak 'N Shake - what can be said about this place... When I was still living in Atlanta, I'd pretty much refer to it as the love child of Krystals and Johnny Rockets with better burgers and more creative milkshakes. But apparently to the community of Alabaster, judging by the crowds that are currently gathering there and the *half-hour wait times* (?!), it's the new "Chéz Steak 'N Shake" - an upscale, fine dining experience. I guess Alabaster was in desperate need for something different as far as quick eats are concerned, because the response to this place opening there has been overwhelming (and a bit confusing, for anyone that's ever been to a Steak 'N Shake). The patron count has been tremendous since it opened, and even going on a Thursday night at 8:30p, my wife and I still had a 20 minute wait for a table. I could go on and on about how shocked I am that people are going bonkers over a *Steak 'n Shake*, but that shouldn't be the purpose of this review. I'll simply say that at this point in the game, if you want to visit anytime soon (from the time of this review), don't be surprised if you have to wait. (...At a *Steak 'N Shake*...) Aside from the crazed welcoming response, the place is clean and (so far) well-managed (i.e., plenty of staff to serve the customers, cook, keep the place running smoothly). The food is as tasty as any other location, and the same goes for the prices. You can get a good meal without breaking the bank, and top it off with a great milkshake as well. One other thing I will mention that I hope doesn't come off the wrong way - most of the wait staff is teenager age, so your experience may vary. I'm not hating on teens, but sometimes in an environment like this one, where the majority of patrons are teens themselves, the staff might have a tendency to be a little distracted and not pay as close attention to things as they probably should. Small example (insignificant, really) - my order was an Oktoberfest burger (great, btw) w/out mustard, and a half-and-half banana/vanilla shake w/out whipped topping. Food brought to the table and *drum-roll* - burger w/ mustard, shake w/ whipped topping. No big deal, but just giving the more demanding, less forgiving customer an advanced heads-up - don't expect perfection (which is funny in itself b/c, again, this is a *Steak 'N Shake*). So, blah blah blah, should you try it? Sure, why not - food's good, atmosphere's bright/clean, milkshakes are killer, and the price is right. Just be prepped for a bit of a wait when you get there. (Oh, and ya might wanna take a jacket - there must be raw meat hanging in there somewhere...)

Great prices and great food! Yes its busy; look at their business model. Bottom line, you can feed a family at a great price while getting some really good food. I suggest trying out the garlic burger; very good. And guaranteed to keep the vampires away... Now if they could come up with something for zombies we would be covered.

I can't believe they're still open that was the worst steak burger I every had I'm sitting at the counter watching her cook my burger Then another lady come along 3 minutes later and add fixings And the waitress let's it sit for another 3 minutes before she brings it to me By then skinny fries truly cold Then they asked me how was it

We went here for lunch on Black Friday. Very busy even though it was around 2pm. Luckily we did not have to wait for a table. This has to be one of my husband's favorite places to eat. He always begs to eat at one on vacation. So glad we have one in Alabama now. My husband and son both got a burger plain. I ordered my daughter the kids grilled cheese. I had the Royal Prince burger. It has bacon and a fried egg on it and it was delicious. I added onions and mustard to it. We went at happy hour so drinks were half price. There were a lot of managers around. Wish there was a store closer.

This is my first Yelp Review, so please bear with me. We waited over a week before trying the new Steak 'N Shake in Alabaster. The surrounding area has really come out to support the new restaurant. Our family of five had to wait about 40 minutes to get a table on a Sunday night at 8:00. The food is delicious. We all had several different milk shakes and different burgers. The wife and kids love the fries. The food came (late) but hot and fresh. The one negative point I had was it took WAY too long to seat & serve everyone. For their price point, you would think that Steak 'N Shake would want to quickly seat 'em, serve 'em and get 'em out of there. Our whole dining experience for 5 burgers and shakes took over an hour and a half. I know it's a new restaurant, but seriously, it seemed as if there were too many cooks in the kitchen and not enough wait staff. Also, the 2 managers I saw were camped by the grill and not working the dining area. Overall, I would give them a 4.5 for food and a 2.0 for service. Their wait/serve time is too long for the low price of their food. IMHO.

We arrived here at about 3:00 P.M. on a rainy Monday. We thought this would dampen the crowd as the other two visits here involved a long wait. We were seated right away, the food ordered came out timely and was at the proper temperature. Our waitress was friendly, if not outgoing. For this type of restaurant this was a good dining experience. I ordered the original double cheeseburger since this is only thirty cents more than the single after adding cheese. I noted they had a Chicago style hot dog, so I ordered one also, even though the burger was enough food. Both were good, as were the accompanying fries. I am not saying they are Chez Fon Fon or Flip Burger quality, but then again neither is the price. My wife ordered the single cheeseburger and added cheese which, as I wrote, is not a good value. Her meal was also good. On the visit before this one our food took a long time to get to us, after we had already waited a long time to be seated at a crowded table with room for just one person per side. When the food got to us, it seemed our long wait had been the result of leaving our prepared food sitting long enough for it to get cold. Burgers and fries were too cold to eat, so I asked the waitress to replace the orders with fresh, hot ones. The manager/co-owner came over and was very courteous and properly concerned. I was impressed by his courtesy and vowed silently to come back, if for no other reason, than in deference to him. This is a good restaurant for an essentially fast food restaurant with table service. What separates it from many restaurants is the ubiquitous presence of the manager/co-owner. It never closes, so obviously one of the owners is not always in the restaurant. But the frequent presence makes a big difference in the attitude of the employees and the quality of the food.

I was excited when this place opened, I couldn't go for a little while because of the crowds. WOW! But, the review isn't about that. I've been pleased here. The food isn't perfection, but I like it a lot. Once, my husband and I were waiting for some time for our food, so our waitress brought us free cookies! Awesome! Recently, we had to ask when our server was going to arrive, so that's why it doesn't get 5 stars. But, it's still a great place and I love it! By the way, try the cheese fries. Yummy!

I'm not sure where to begin. Simply put, I was disappointed. I lived in Indianapolis for four years so I've eaten plenty of 'Steak n Shake'. As others have said, the crowd was crazy and the wait was ridiculous at 7:30 on a SUNDAY night. So we decided to see a movie and come back. Good decision. By 9:30 it was practically empty. Nice interior though it seemed a bit small compared to other S n S's. Based on the crowds they probably should have added a few extra hundred feet to the store. The server was nice and attentive. But the food? Well, because the meat patties are EXTREMELY thin, I always get a double. This time the parties were so thin you could see through them. The meat was barely existing. The burgers were lukewarm. The cheese wasn't melted...it was just a square of cheese sitting there, cold. Who eats a burger with cold cheese? I'm used to getting a HUGE plate of fries with S n S burgers. Not this time. The fries were also barely warmed over. I'm confused about why the burgers weren't sizzling hot. They came right off the grill...we could see them cooking. So what happened between cooking and prepping with buns and condiments? Did the lettuce and tomato from the cold side bring the temp down? If so, that means the burger wasn't hot enough or large or thick enough to handle the other elements. A skinny piece of ground beef can't maintain heat I suppose. Or maybe it's because they keep the restaurant so cold? I'm with Keith C...all this excitement over a 'Steak N Shake'? Let's get the quality up and I will think about going back. Right now it's not worth the drive for me. For those who live in the area it's a cool spot and looks like it's going to be a hang out for teens. I used to like S n S burgers...guess I'm older now and if I'm gonna eat a burger I need quality. My turtle Carmel shake was ok. I probably should have tried the double chocolate shake. Prices were great; otherwise I would have been really upset if I had spent a LOT of money. Oh and the manager seemed distracted. Didn't ask us about the food nor did he even acknowledge us as we were checking out. Everyone acted like they were ready to go home. If I had to compare I would say Johnny Rocket's and Five Guys has better burgers. I wanted S n S to be much better. I will wait awhile and try again.

25 minute wait for a single milkshake and french fry. It seemed there were plenty of employees there, but not enough working. The fries were cold when received. Not worth the wait.

SLOWEST. SERVICE. IN. ALABASTER. The food is standard, the service is personable enough, just slower'n molasses runnin' uphill in January. I'd suggest driving through instead of sitting down- unless you have an extra 90+ minutes to kill!

Their hamburgers are pieces of meat thrown on a bun. To me it seems like scraps. Would not eat another. Shakes rock though as expected. I would go back for that reason.

Went through the drive thru with one car ahead of us. After we ordered we pulled up behind the car and waited at least 5 minutes for the people in front of us to get their 3 milkshakes. Why does it take so long to make a few milkshakes?? We were thinking our food would be ready as soon as we pulled up to the window since we had been waiting so long for the people in front of us and surely the employee who made the milkshakes wasn't making our hamburgers and ff as well. Turns out she was. Where was everyone else who works there?? I could see our wait time through the window approaching 10 minutes as the employee STARTED to make our food. Thought this was fast food, not hibachi?? Finally got our food after a 15 minute wait time only for it to be semi warm. Overall, decent food, terrible service.

The somewhat baffling thing about Steak 'N Shake is the Armageddon-like response this burger chain has received in Alabaster. You would think from the response that the drinks came from the Fountain of Youth or a vision of the Virgin Mary herself had appeared in a piece of bread. This place, however, is quite good and provides a lot of bang for the buck. This isn't a traditional southern place as evidenced by the menu. I haven't braved the chili on spaghetti thing yet (I just can't wrap my head around that one) and being able to get an egg on a burger isn't something you see at the local McDonald's. Steak 'N Shake serves a variety of burgers, hot dogs, chili dishes, melts, salads, and a few other quick-order dishes. One thing to remember is that the burger patties are very small and thin. They are tasty and cooked to order, but I would recommend getting at least a double for even the meager of appetite. The fries are of the shoestring variety, so I opted for the onion rings. They too were small, but are better than shoestring fries in my opinion. I also ordered the "Royale" as it was a diet smart bacon double cheeseburger with a fried egg on top. Why did I order that? Because I could. Because it was an actual option. There are a lot of interesting options that require future visits when the crowd eventually calms down. My better half tried the standard patty melt and it was good. Not something you can get at a regular burger joint especially with bread grilled on a flat top and prepared the right way. The kids had the mac n cheese and it was of the Kraft variey, only a very small portion. Another reviewer astutely mentioned that this restaurant is a cross between Krystal and Johnny Rockets. I would have to concur. The interior is a very retro '50's style diner with bar stools, booths, and round tables. The service is pretty good considering they are overwhelmed with business. I have to mention that the staff was really on top of bussing duties, no table stayed dirty for long. They get people in and out very well considering 90% of Shelby County apparently goes there daily. One thing that makes this spot better than a place like Johnny Rockets is that the price of the retro decor isn't passed on to the customer. I had the Royale combo (fries or onion rings) for $4.99. So, for the fun atmosphere, different menu, and incredible shakes, the value for the money is definitely there. You would spend almost the same amount of money at Burger King and McDonald's and probably more at Arby's without having table service. Bottom line, somewhat quick dinner for 2 adults and 2 children, different choices than what we normally have, fun for the kids, and 2 out of this world milkshakes-$30. Can't beat that with a stick.

Over priced burger place. This is a table service restaurant but don't expect to get good service and I mean little things like getting your order right, refilling your drink and even bringing you the correct bill. The food is ok but it make me wonder how clean it is when I can watch the teen male employees eating in the kitchen area every time the manager steps away. If your jones ins for some Steak and Shake then go to the one in Hoover and it provides better service.

It's been very hard to get in here, very busy since they opened. So far I've only made it through the drive through, but each time (twice total) I've been disappointed. First, the store is not open 24 hours like most Steak 'n Shakes. The food through the drive-through has been poor to mediocre. The hamburger was as if it had been run over with a steam roller, the cup of fries were only half full (this happened both times) and it is VERY slow. Up until now I had a very high esteem for Steak 'n Shake. Hopefully they will get the bugs worked out. For now, avoid the drive through. Maybe I can come back and write a better review for their dine-in service

I really like steak n shake, and was glad when this one in Alabaster opened. I have really enjoyed the Frisco Melt and shakes when I lived in Mobile, and was really pleased when we went here. The prices are very reasonable and the food is consistently good. The location is great, and I'll definitely be back again!

I will not wait to be seated for FAST food! I always did like Steak & Shake but this location is one of the best! We were seated after a crowd began to gather behind us, just before I was about to walk out! My wife, must have known what I was thinking, because she looked back at me with her, puppy dog eyes, I did not want to make a seen since we were at the front of the line, so we stayed. We were seated shortly after that but waited far too long for a waitress, drinks or to place or order! Well, wouldn't you know it our food took for ever!!! Our waitress finally did come by and refill our drinks, then offered us some fries to munch on while we waited. I looked around and no one was being served, one third of the tables were empty and there were about twenty people standing at the door waiting to be seated! Our food did finally come and it was VERY GOOD!!! Our waitress was very forgetful. My son wanted cheese fries, she forgot the cheese, ( probably doing him a favor) we asked her for some ketchup and napkins as she was retuning for the cheese and had to make a separate trip for each! All together the meal is very good but as I stood at the cashier's counter to pay for the meal, I once again felt like the OMEGA MAN! Our waitress seen me standing there for about 4 or 5 minutes and she asked a lady ( Mgr. or Assistant Mgr. ) if the lady could cash me out, and the look on the lady's face was as though she had asked to borrow her tooth brush, so she could clean her finger nails! Disgusted the lady did come over to ring me up but swiped the register next to the one I was standing at so my waitress could take my money! Having been a business owner I know when all the employee's become absent minded they are being mismanaged or being disciplined! When we left there were still a large number of people waiting to be seated, with a large number of tables siting empty and empty that had not been cleared yet! The food is, very good! The food is not good enough to wait for, really bad service!
