I can't say enough about the food here. We live in So California and have access to some of the very best restaurants and fish. The salmon and halibut at Wildflower is the best I have ever had! A must to go and try it. Also, the strawberry rhubarb cake, absolutely delicious.

Seated on the Main Street of Talkeetna this quaint restaurant has amazing food and great service. There is a patio with umbrellas that is an amazing place to sit and enjoy your meal and the downtown area. We started our meal with the seafood chowder. It was full of some tasty crab and well-seasoned with dill. The chowder wasn't as thick as most chowders, but still tasted good. My wife and I both ordered salads topped with blackened salmon. The salmon was caught earlier that day, fresh, and seasoned and cooked perfectly! My wife got both the sesame ginger dressing and tomato basil dressing on the side so she could enjoy both. I got the Caesar salad and the homemade dressing was tasty. The meal ended with chocolate cake. It was rich, but not as amazing as the key lime cheesecake that people at the next table ordered and raved about.

This place is amazing. We had fish chowder, some sort of halibut special with king crab on the top, and rhubarb cake with fresh berries for dessert. All was delicious. They also have 40 beers on tap, and our server was nice.

Excellent food!! We stopped in for breakfast and were happy with the food to price ratio. I couldn't even finish the breakfast burrito. It was fantastic. My husband got the regular pancakes which he said were really good. The big bonus was the coffee! It was excellent!! A nice surprise after drinking folgers for the past week while staying with friends. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient. Very pleased with our experience.

We ate here tonight...this is definitely the place to be in talkeetna for delicious food with a great atmosphere. I had the halibut fish and chips, easily the best I've ever had , my fiancé had the chicken Alfredo and he said it was phenomenal! Come to this place if you are in Talkeetna you won't regret it!

I will always remember the food here as some of the best I've ever had. The first time we ate here, I had the best crab cakes I've ever tasted. Next time I went all out and had the salmon dinner with sesame sauce, wow was that good. It was soooo fresh and the sauce was the perfect accompaniment for the salmon. Served with fresh veggies and purple mashed potatoes which were the potato of the day, and a delicious roll. Friendly servers who did a great job. There were six of us and all agreed that their dinners wer fabulous. Oh, did I mention that there are 40 beers on tap? Locals recommended we eat here, and we were glad we did! We heard that the chef/owner was a chef for former President George H Bush!

Food was good but the service. We had to wait for hours even with half full house. Eventually I decided to go to grocery for a long time and asked my friends to call me once ready. Terrible feeling.

We came here at the recommendation of one of our friends who spent a summer working at the Princess Lodge. I had to make a phone call so I didn't want to sit inside, but it was raining so we sat in the spacious covered deck/patio (no one was there when we got there). Everything we tried was delicious: the beers (we got the mother ale), the burgers, the dessert (rhubarb!), all of it! Some else that was kind of neat was that the beer taps were all on the uncovered deck outside. If we ever find ourselves in Talkeetna again, we will definitely be coming back here!

Between all the places you can choose from in Talkeetna, this has been my least favorite. However, I might as well try them all right? I tried the veggie wrap. It was huge and well seasoned, however very runny and hard to eat. The burger my mom had with fries was just a basic costco burger and frozen fries (or wherever they got it from). Small place with a few tables. I would probably go to the pizza place or roadhouse over this place, but would come again if the other places were overly crowded.

After u get over the sticker shock of prices in Alaska you can allow yourself to really enjoy some absolutely delicious food. I had the pan died halibut sandwich w mayo and king crab on top of the sandwich. Again, it is expensive but it was really good and it was fresh. It's a small quant place and like most of Alaska the people were inviting.

Food was average - nothing exceptional, we had their Special Sandwich with Halibut and crab meat. Service was very slow and food was pricey. Sandwich for $23, like really?

Food was okay. The service was terrible. The seating process was uncomfortable. Even after being seated we waited for some time until we actually had to ask to place our order. Our server (women with short grey hair and glasses) and other employees were acting as if more customers were an imposition. We actually heard our server made a negative comment about another customer. She came up to me and said while grabbing my plate "are you done?" I wasn't! Just really bad atmosphere...sorry for coming in at the end of the season. I've never wrote a yelp review, negative or positive. I think I might start, especially when receiving good series because of this place.

Just had delicious salmon and crab special for the second time while visiting Talkeetna twice! This place is a little gem with a relaxed atmosphere. Don't come here if you are in a hurry. You must come here to feel the Talkeetna aura of peace with an expectation of awesome food and you won't be disappointed! Try the seafood chowder to start, it's the best in Alaska

CANNOT say enough good. So many things appealed to me I had a hard time choosing, but in the end went with a made to order pizza. It was phenomenal. My wife had the special, which involved fresh halibut and crab legs. She loved every bite. The service was outstanding. We ate on the patio and watched all the folks going around town. It was expensive for us ($70 plus tip for the two of us) but well worth it. We tried a Beaver Tail Blonde on tap and it was a great choice. Highly recommend it.

Great food marred by one incredibly rude server, and a total lack of management. We waited over 20 minutes to get a table inside because it was pretty cold outside. We let the waitress know that we wanted to sit inside because it was cold for us. All the waitresses seemed very harried. The rude waitress harshly told a patron with a young toddler to go wait outside even though it was clearly cold. (We later found out that they were severely understaffed, which although still inexcusable, may be the reason for the generally harsh and cold attitudes.) After about 5 minutes of being seated, one of the waitresses propped the door open, resulting in a massive icy draft hitting us head-on. (We were nearest the door). We asked politely if they would close the door, and our waitress went ahead and closed it. Another waitress simply re-opened it again. I asked her to please close it, to which she walked off without even answering us. I went ahead and closed the door, to which she simply propped it open again. When I told her we were freezing, and that is why we wanted to sit inside, she shouted at us that we were being very rude, and stormed off. Two other patrons heard this and both told me that we were not being rude, and they were also freezing. Apparently, this one server's needs were more important than an entire restaurant of freezing patrons. When I asked for the manager, our waitress, who was trying to help, told us there was no manager of any sort on premises, and she had to "deal with the situation". Another patron told me that this other waitress had been cold and rude to her too. Bottom line, a restaurant with really good food (great halibut, great salad) was marred by one really nasty server, and total lack of any management. Unfortunately, what should have been a happy experience was turned into a bad one, and the rating reflects the owner's choice of server as well as lack of ensuring management. Who runs a restaurant during the busy summer tourist season without a manager during lunch? By the way, if I had taken the time to go through the reviews, I would have noted a trend of poor service for this establishment. I would recommend to the owner that he/she work on this facet of what would otherwise make it a great establishment. I don't recall ever in all my years having a server tell a patron that he/she is rude.

Not the cheapest place in town but lovely food and good service. If you don't want the standard tourist town fare of pizza, burgers , etc. go there - you won't be disappointed. I had the salmon Oscar open face sandwich which came with a nice salad of mixed baby greens. They also have the burger, pizza thing going on and a lot of craft beers on tap . Nice front patio, indoor seating and huge patio in back as well. Bon Appetit! And in case you think I'm a health nut, my hubby's fries were divine too:)

Highly recommend, for the best food in town... We were greeted at the door, seated outside on the deck out front, promptly served water and orders taken. Salmon and Halibut chowder was possibility the best I ever had! Pan seared Halibut sandwich with real Caesar salad... Yummy, then...nobody came...no water, no "How is the food" no nothing... We went in asking for the bill, after waiting for another 15 minutes went in to pay...waited some more... Best food, worst service EVER!!!

Terrible food and terrible service ! I would give them zero star if I could. Our family got very disappointed about the terrible food and terrible service. Especially, the incompetent waiter who served our table with bad attitude. The food he served was terrible and extremely salty so I told him that I couldn't eat because it's way too salty and mushy but instead of offering other options to me, he took the dish away which 3/4 of the food was still left on the dish and got mad at me and said that I was the first person who complained about the food ever ( which I found out later that other people had already complained about the same dish I ordered). His attitude was outrageous and unacceptable as a waiter who was supposed to serve customers so I felt extremely bad and lost all my appetite. When I asked for the manager, he said that the owner didn't want to give me a discount or waive the cost of the food I ordered and they charged me the full amount anyway. I felt like I got ripped off by these rude people and I was still hungry. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Find better restaurants if possible and do not even try this restaurant. They need to realize what they've been doing to their customers who were there to enjoy their vacation time.

I was not expecting to find a huge fresh salad loaded with fresh organic vegetables in the middle of Alaska. I even saw the chef gathering fresh herbs in their garden! The baked halibut was very fresh and perfectly prepared. My kids loved the pizza that had a large selection of toppings. The halibut fish and chips were outstanding. All sorts of organic and locally sourced foods at a regular price. Outstanding food served by nice people in a great little venue.

Over priced, small portions and manger was very rude. Visiting local friends in the area we stopped in for lunch. We all ordered large salads with salmon @ $21.00 each - not cheap for lunch salad a la carte - Salads arrived with 4 oz piece of over cooked salmon on top of wilted lettuce swimming in dressing. Politely asked manger if salads are pre made with dressing and she took salads back to the kitchen chef. Chef was too busy to come out or offer us fresh salads or something else on menu - The manager returned and said salad was fresh and cooked salmon wilts the lettuce. ( looked around and no one else had ordered salads with salmon, they must have seen our salads and went for the burgers and fries) With or without the salmon, the salad had been sitting in dressing for some. Asked for our check and waitress apologized and said manger would not compensate for salads that were not edible. Management definitely needs a refresher course in customer service-

Yes, it's pricey but definitely quality seafood. Get whatever the halibut special is- loved the local purple potato mash it comes with. You can add a dollar and make your dinner entree soup to be the seafood chowder so you can have everything without over doing it. Just beware of winter hours, I asked and most of the restaurant take turns opening on weekends since it's low season!

The Wildflower Cafe is a welcome gem of a restaurant after having eating mediocre food several days in Denali. The salmon asparagus bisque, muscles, and halibut fish and chips were all wonderful. The ambiance is amazing, sitting outside on a sunny day, watching cars and people mosey by. Service was good, no waits. Definitely glad we decided to stop by here!

Wildflower Cafe was our fueling station a couple of times during a short visit to Talkeetna. While proximity probably had something to do with it, given that we were staying in one of the rooms upstairs, overall Wildflower was an enjoyable place. Admittedly, any place that has 40+ draught lines will be up my alley by default, but the food was pretty damn tasty too. From the blackened halibut, to the salmon benedict and the crab cakes; everything was tasty and appears to be as scratch made and locally sourced as possible. The local theme applies to the beer selection as well, as most of the tap lines are dedicated to Alaksan breweries. Overall, it's a pretty lively environment, the service was consistently friendly (albeit leisurely paced) and the food/drink hit the spot each time.

Great food. More variety and freshness than other's on Main Street. Have a more contemporary menu-more like we are used to here in CA.

Last summer, I stopped into the Wildflower Café for an early dinner before boarding the local railway. I ordered a medium-rare steak and my friend ordered crab cakes. The food was prepared quickly and our meals were delicious. We also had a chance to mingle with some of the locals - very friendly people. This little town was lovely! Ditto for Alaska!

Great seafood chowder. Baked halibut was a little bland but the crab on top nullified that blandness.

This is one of those places that makes you wish there were six stars or even seven. After several days in Alaska and not a decent meal to speak of, the wildflower single-handedly redeemed my opinion of Alaskan cuisine. The seafood curry was so delicious I'm trying to figure out how we can schedule another stop before we go back home. I dare you not to lick the bowl clean. And they very willingly made it gluten-free. The fresh produce in the salad and vegetable sides were the fresher than those I pull from my garden. I know I'm gushing, but it's so deserved! The service was extremely friendly and attentive. And by Alaska standards the prices were very reasonable. They have over 40 beers on tap, and although their wine list was small, it had great choices--very well selected. The other people in my party had the fish and chips which they said was delicious, and they finished with the chocolate cake--which was the perfect end to an amazing meal. I love you wildflower. I hope to see you again soon.

Fantastic food and very friendly service! The pan fried salmon sandwich was recommended to me by a local and they were right! It was perfectly cooked and piping hot! Highly recommend and if the weather allows sitting outside is perfect to watch the goings on of Downtown Talkeetna. Enjoy!

They were very busy. We still got waited on quickly and efficiently. We had the fettuccine and a salad and the carrot soup. All excellent. The rhubarb cake was to die for and I do not like rhubarb. While this is pricy, it is an excellent option. Recommended.

Fast and polite. Best halibut sandwich I had in Alaska topped with crab. The plate was huge and salad was loaded. Awesome lunch spot.

Everything we tried was fresh, tasty and first class. Busy place so service is just a little bit slow but worth the wait. Nice selection of wines and beers. Be adventurous and go for the daily specials you will not be disappointed. Not too hungry go for the cup or bowl of seafood chowder- it will send your tastebuds to the moon and back. Wish they could ship some to us now.

Talkeetna Is a cool place and this is the coolest little cafe in Talkeetna. Halibut and salmon both very fresh and perfectly prepared. Mushroom soup also delicious. Great selection of draft beers and friendly staff. We went on a cool rainy day in August and sat on the deck, but we were very comfortable. Order the salmon sandwich and a good Alaskan ale and you'll be very happy!

Terrible experience. Took forever for them to even stop by the table, they were out of several menu items, including small pizzas. How do you run out of pizza? We ordered soup & salad, waited over 20 minutes without seeing the waitress. Other people that ordered after us got & finished their food. When I went to track down our waitress, and asked about our food, she said that it's coming and walked away. The rest of the wait staff just stared at me, so I told them to cancel the order, gave them money for our drinks, and we left. Amateur hour.

We were excited to eat here based on the other reviews, but sadly we were let down. The silverware and drinking glasses were dirty. The house tap water tasted really, really bad (I've had better tasting water and drank out of cleaner glasses in some pretty dodgy spots in Central / South America). There was a fledging mosquito graveyard on the windowsill next to our table. Overall just dirty, overpriced, and mediocre taste at best.

Completely blown away...the sunny patio drew us in, but the service & food are what really made it an incredible experience. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the various offerings & made great recommendations for entrees. The salmon was fresh out of the river & the NY strip was prepared to perfection...not to mention the beautiful presentation. The chef has got it together & should feel confident that his crew functions as a team. From start to finish, we were well cared for by his staff as he prepared the most amazing meal we had in Talkeetna. If you go anywhere in Talkeetna, put the Wildflower Cafe at the top of your list. You will not regret it.

4.83 stars. On Main Street is this modest cafe that we couldn't tell was open due to the abounding snow that blocked the open sign. Ambiance is nothing special, pretty much just a room with a kitchen in back. Given the reviews here, the main thing we were here for was the soup! We had the Scallop Mushroom Bacon Bisque (5 stars), Seafood Chowder (5 stars) & shared an entree of the Pork Tenderloin Madeira (4.5) with brown Jasmine rice, roasted potatoes, sautéed veggies. A no frills establishment that pumped out some great food! The soups were just outrageous! I tended to like the bisque better than the creamy chowder, but both were perfect stuff in this snowy weather. Service was very warm and friendly. Really, you couldn't ask for more. Tally: Scallop Mushroom Bacon Bisque: 5 stars! Seafood Chowder: 5 stars! Pork Tenderloin Madeira: 4.5 stars. 5+5+4.5= 14.5/3= 4.83 stars.

I ate here with the family and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the halibut sandwich with fries and a piece of watermelon. The watermelon was the perfect ending to the meal. Their key lime pie is so good. I highly recommend it.

Great food, service takes a while - but this isn't the city. We always notice small towns seem to have slow service to us city folks, but don't we go to Alaska to get away from it all? The hustle and bustle of the city just doesn't exist here. Small town, great charm, great food. Seasoned perfectly, cooked to perfection. My friend and I shared the salmon and my companion had the curry - which was one of the best curries I have had.

This town is a treasure, and this restaurant is a gem that fits within! They try to use local and organic ingredients and have about 30 microbrews on tap! I took other yelpers advise, and tried the seafood chowder. Of course, it was great! I got "the burger," made with organic beef, and it was awesome! They must have changed the recipe for the fries, because they were also great. Crisp on the outside and lightly seasoned with sea salt. I wish I had room for the deserts! Definitely worth a stop in talkeetna if your on your way up to Denali. The stop with add to your trip like it did to mine!

  • Rick B.

This is a terrific find, 4 and one-half stars. Just 8 tables inside, with a casual atmosphere. Yet, they have 25 microbrews on tap, over a dozen nice wines available by the glass and such dishes as Beef Wellington, as well as casual fare such as burgers. I had a very good carrot - ginger soup and grilled salmon with a sesame glaze. Also a local microbrew infused with black currant and a very tasty strawberry-rhubarb cake. This restaurant emphasizes local sourcing. Dinner fare is priced close to $30 and includes sides and soup or salad.

Get the seafood chowder! Even if it's just a cup with the rest of the meal, you should get the chowder. Out waitress was a very lovely lady who was apparently born in a log cabin a mile away. Now she winters in Washington and summers in Talkeetna near her family and friends. I never did catch her name as she appears a little shy. But she was very friendly when I did get her to chat for a few minutes. Wish I could have listened to her a little more. She sounds like she is an interesting person. But don't forget to order the seafood chowder!

There seem to be a lot of restaurant choices in Talkeetna, which is the closest town to Mt McKinley that isn't inside a big park. The cafe sports a nice deck outside, but because of the free-floating cottonwood seeds all over the place, we decided to eat inside. My halibut was terrific, very fresh, but the French fries were baked and not terribly appetizing. However, the ranch dressing that came with the accompanying salad was homemade, and the tartar sauce tasted terrific as well. My friend had the special salmon wrap, which was too much to eat. Also, the root beer is divine, very intense. Great, friendly service. Lots of beer choices, if you're into that.

Woohoo! We found the one hippie enclave in all of Alaska! Talkeetna is located between Fairbanks and Anchorage and if you're making the drive between the two cities it is definitely worth a stop. For those of you who don't know, Talkeetna was the inspiration for Northern Exposure, and it is a very cute town. At the Wildflower Café, I had a halibut sandwich with king crab and garlic aioli with a side salad. This was the first side salad I've had in all of Alaska that was made with mixed greens and didn't have croutons. I was already in heaven, but the best part - even the blue cheese dressing was homemade! My mom's seafood chowder was also delicious, and my dad said his burger tasted like it was made from ground steak. There were some misses: my sister's chicken with pasta and cream sauce was a little drenched in sauce, and my mom's Caesar salad needed acid. But! So far this has been by far our best meal in the state. That, and if I have any straight guy fans, their waitresses were also the cutest I've seen in a while.

My husband and I were looking for something other than burgers or pizza in the interesting town of Talkeetna. We checked out the menu for the WC and decided to eat here. It was a gorgeous evening (Alaskans said it was HOT). We ordered the seafood chowder which is a rich, creamy perfectly seasoned soup with bits of various seafood - hands down - the best I have ever had. Husband had cream of broccoli soup - just as delicious and creamy. He had the sesame salmon which was excellent - glaze added so much. The veggies were fresh and perfectly cooked. I had the 'chef salad' which meant that the chef takes mixed fresh greens and cucumber and layers on what he felt like - it was crab, fried halibut and salmon, 2 giant shrimp and a perfect scallop - what a meal! And the creamy peppercorn dressing was home made to make it extra special. Love the place!! Very laid back place - no rush.

This restaurant makes my list of the top 5 restaurants I've ever dined at. That list would include: Truffles in St. Louis, Vong in New York, Monaca and Figueira (both in Brazil) and The Wildflower Cafe in Talkeetna, AK. Dining is, for me, about food, service, presentation and ambience. And the Wildflower scores 5s on all counts.

We so liked the food, the setting, and the service, that we went back 2 times the same day. Salmon fish 'n chips - the salmon in a puff batter with freshly made tartar sauce. Fries that appeared to be hand cut, and home made mayo. Cabbage soup (don't think borsht here) with root veggies and ham...on a rainy and chilly day it filled the bill. Seafood chowder was wonderful! Check out the ladies room - wild flowers everywhere! A nice place to have seasonal fresh ingredients prepared with care and innovation. A bit pricey, but worth every sou! Kudos to the chef!

Note: This review only applies to lunch. Overall a decent place for a quick meal, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. Food: We ordered the salmon wrap (the Asian themed one), a cheeseburger, and a Philly cheese steak. All were competently done, though the thick hamburger patty could have used some seasoning. The salmon wrap was reported as tasty but also appeared a bit messy; the menu description reads like a stir-fry in a wrap, and that is exactly how it looked. Service: No major complaints for most of the meal, though eyebrows were raised when at the end the waitress slapped down the bill without looking at us and without asking about dessert or if we wanted anything else. Food coming out was a wee bit on the slow side for lunch, though it was rather busy at the time. Value: Average for a tourist-trap area, $10-12 for lunch entrees. Decor: Clean, standard cafe fare. Not particularly memorable.

In the town that inspired Northern Exposure on TV, and is the closest town with the best view of the Denali Alaskan Mountain range, which includes Mt. McKinley, is this little gem of a restaurant. It has a large deck and patio, rustic wood architecture, and good food! They have casual Pub dishes and main courses of Halibut, Salmon, Seafood Curry and other dishes that take advantage of the fresh local seafood. They also have a couple of meat dishes, including seasonal or rotating specials, like todays New York Steak Au Poivre, The Salmon is prepared and served in a sweet glaze, and you have never seen Salmon this red in color and fresh in taste! The Halibut is fresh and moist and stuffed with Alaskan King Crab. Entrees served with soup or garden fresh colorful salads and good size portions. Decent selection of beers and a smaller wine list. This place usually has a line in the summer. Relax and take your time in the fresh air and enjoy the rustic surroundings. Afterwards go up the hill and catch the view of Denali Natrional Park and the impressive Alaskan Range and Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America, at over 20, 000 feet.

Stay away from the crab cakes! They were mostly bread, overly spiced, overcooked and dry. I ate the salad which was OK and left the "cake" after sifting through the bread in search of some crab. Terrible. The seafood chowder was good as was the beer selection.

  • Sam C.

Awesome. My porcini and Parmesan crusted halibut was divine. They offer 30+ Alaska micro brews on draught. Inside and outside dining are available. Service is top-notch, professional and friendly. Oh... They also serve the best seafood chowder I've ever had. I'd drive an hour to eat at this place. Prices are local-restaurant reasonable. Most ingredients are locally grown, and some are from their own garden. An inspiring meal!
