Great little local coffee shop in Sitka! You know it's a well traveled locals' joint because it has an old time, well used push pin bulletin board full of events and notices. Latte Wes well made and the baked goods tempting... Ok more than tempting... The rhubarb pie was tasty and so was the pecan bar!

Just stopped in because of a Yelp review. Am glad I did. Great hometown feel. The girls make you feel welcomed. The coffee was great too!

Strawberry-raspberry pie for breakfast. Yes, it looked so good I couldn't resist. It was wonderful. The rest of my family enjoyed freshly baked scones, muffins and bagels. Everything tastes so good. If you are looking to eat with the locals, stop in.

Good offerings and I'm grateful they were open (few of the places I like to go in town are open on Mondays for some reason). Cute atmosphere and good soup!

Only had coffee but unlike a previous reviewer we were met with a very friendly barista. We'll be back

My favorite coffeeshop in Sitka (and there are actually a few to choose from!). Consistent lattes, divine baked goods at very reasonable prices (especially the pecan scone, bagels, flourless peanut butter and chocolate cookie), comfortable atmosphere for sitting with friends or working, and they even have a special kids' hot chocolate with sprinkles and kids books/toys! (No stroller ramp, easier to enter thru bookstore with stroller) I read some poor reviews of this place and unfortunately I did see some of the less than perfect customer service that was described - aimed at others while I was sitting. That made me sad because there's so much to like about this place. On the whole, the staff is great, and the newer hires (I could tell because they had to ask about ringing up) were friendly and cheerful. So go in with a smile and hopefully Backdoor will eventually be known as the friendliest coffeeshop in town along with it's other positive attributes!

Cash only. Owner seems tired of service industry. Hot chocolate was powdery and not mixed. Wouldn't honor paid gift certificate. Said it expired. Overall rude staff and not service oriented. Don't think I'll ever go back. Sad vibe. Go elsewhere.

Food good ... If they are willing to serve you. The total rudeness towards tourists reflects not only bad business , but unkind people. Skip it and go to the Highliner for free Internet and a warm welcome.

Mention to a local that you're hungry and they will be quick to recommend the Backdoor. True to it's name, this small cafe is located at the back door of a book shop downtown. As all their food is homemade, you have to be early to get a meal! In the past, I have arrived by 12:45 to find that majority of the food I would order has been long gone. On this visit, my husband and I were craving something warm. We went around 3:45pm and the place was still packed! Everyone was reading and sipping their coffee/tea. We had the last piece of strawberry pie and an oatmeal, lemon bar and both were incredible. It's so pleasant to go to a small cafe where you feel like you've gone to Grandma's for a snack. Be warned that this place does NOT accept credit cards...cash only!

Nice coffee and the bookstore next door is a major plus. It gets busy during lunch so try and skip that time of day. Their daily bread special is worth the wait. Delicious !

My first trip to Sitka, and the local I visited took me to The Backdoor. All I have to say is that whoever makes those bars is a national treasure. I had a lemon blueberry bar, a cherry raspberry bar, a pecan bar, and a date bar (yes its true) and they were positively wonderful. I don't care how "chilly" the help is, the bars are worth it. I only wish I could go back for more.

Ok, so I know two people in the cruise industry who love this place. My Fella and I came in because it seemed like a nice, warm and inviting place to get coffee and a bite to eat...not so much. I quickly mentioned knowing people who love this place and was met with a chilly response, so I mentioned that my family is from Sitka knowing that many residents have a bit of disdain for tourists...chilly again. So I gave up. On the upside, the coffee was great, just don't expect warmth when your ordering.

We absolutely love this place. It's a great, funky, characterful little, rather paradigmatic "coffee house" with great decor and feel, and friendly staff. It also has great coffee and great savory and sweet foods at incredibly low prices. The same meal at a similar place in our area would have costs us close to twice as much, and the quality was simply superb, executed very well. It's also attached to Harbor Books, a great local bookstore.

So I went to a family reunion up in Sitka and was extremely distraught to find out there were no Starbucks. Le Sigh. Thankfully, there were a few more than decent alternatives to chose from. There was a division among my family as to whether this establishment or Highliner was the best. I personally would say this one was. It's located in a book store in "downtown" Sitka. It can get packed due to all the tourists from cruise ships but the wait isn't that long. Their pastries were yummy... I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Their coffee was rich, flavorful and really fresh tasting. Their baristas know what they're doing. I deduct a star because they don't have "iced" cups... they just put iced drinks in a normal cup.... irritating...
