My partner and I went to Sakura while we were staying at the Alyeska Resort over Labor Day weekend. It was a quick appetizer to supper, and they had quite good sushi. It wasn't very busy when we ate there, so we were able to sit at the bar that interact with the sushi chefs. We ordered the shrimp tempura and scallop roll, since both of those were seafood options from Alaska. The maki rolls were very good, with a variety of different flavors and textures. Very well-crafted. But I will say that their sushi options are somewhat conventional, with just a few options locally-sourced from Alaska. I mean, we didn't fly all the way to Alaska to eat sushi and fish imported from Hawaii or the lower 48. With that in mind, Sakura wasn't an amazing sushi restaurant precisely because it didn't rely solely on Alaskan ingredients. There's so much fresh fish right there in Alaska that I wondered why they used fish from elsewhere. Why not just highlight Japanese food with an Alaskan twist? Overall, I felt that Sakura was a good sushi restaurant at the Alyeska Resort. If you have a craving for Japanese food while you're in Girdwood/Chugach, this certainly would hit the spot.

This is pretty great, little sushi restaurant. It's located inside the Alyeska hotel. It's quite small. There's a sushi bar area and then a few shared dining tables. They have great happy hour specials with cheap miso soup, edamame, etc. The sushi rolls are pretty delicious and plentiful. I particularly enjoyed the rolls that utilized fresh, Alaska catch. The scallop roll, in particular, was a standout. And the rolls are pretty sizable, so it's easy to fill up fast here. Service was friendly and fairly attentive. The sushi maker guys were great to watch and chat with. All in all, we had a great dining experience here.

This is probably the worst Japanese food I have had. I suppose it could have been worse- if we had gotten food poisoning. We ordered tempura, 4 different rolls and the teriyaki chicken for our kids and nothing was good with the exception of the white rice. The rolls were very basic, relatively bland and tiny! For 18 bucks a roll I would expect creativity and flavor! Even the tempura dipping sauce was off and not in a trendy new chef kind of way but more of a vinegar soy sauce mix created by someone who has never had tempura before kind of way. My tongue is still burning from the acidity. Service was very poor as well. With all of the amazing sushi in anchorage this was a sore disappointment. We stay at the hotel several weekends a month and will never be eating here again. Ever. Go to jack sprats (awesome), or the double musky (awesome for carnivores), or even the sitz (bar food)......skip this place!!! You're welcome.

We had a California Roll, Spider Roll, Pork Belly entree and Miso soup and seaweed salad as apps.. My overall impressions is that this is typically what you get when you get kind of 'stuck' in a fancy-ish hotel: High priced rather average food. Nothing we had was parituclarly wowing. The seaweed salad was standard, and good, but should have been split (we each ordered one, usually they are small, these are huge, and priced as such - $8). The rolls were boring, was there Avo in the Ca Roll?, could see little strips of it, but so miniscule it was irrelevant. I know that the spider roll had some softshell crab in it, well, at least the end pieces, not sure about the middle. The pork belly was good, savory, krispy cooked just right, and the crispy fried fresh vegie side and white rice offered a nice complement, but the Kim chee killed it. I like Kim chee, make it myself, but with the pork belly?, uh uh, didn't go. Perhaps, it matters most what your order here. A lady across from us go the Hawaiian roll and it look pretty good. We were both Alaskans with a freezers full of Alaska, so local stuff wasn't a priroity for us, although the blackcod special was very tempting, in hindsight probably should have just gone straight for that. The whole layout was weird too and if you expect to come here for even the slightest nice little intimate romantic meal forget it, because 70% of the floor seating ) is at one big communal table or the bar, and the remaining tables next to the communal table, which is all fine dandyy for some people and occasions, just not tonight for "us"- or reserve the one lone stuffed in a cubby 4-top table a year or so in advance. Service was excellent for the most part and we should have picked the waitresses brain more to help our decision, but we will not go here again, just not worth it. With so many other sushi places in Anchorage I would save your sushi craving for later, and there are several good alternative restaurant choices in Girdwood.

I visit Alaska every summer. Each time my go-to place for Japanese food has been Sakura as I found it to be the best in Alaska. But I was very disappointed on my last visit. After being seated, it took 10minutes for the server to stop by. Then, when I asked if they had toro that evening, she said they did not. I had very fresh toro there last summer, so I was a bit disappointed, but understanding. When I was paying my bill, I heard the same server describing "toro" as that night's special to a table next to me. Wow.... Not sure what was going on, but it did not feel right. I'm not sure if I will go there again on my next trip to Alaska.

Excellent sushi - we sat at the bar and the chef walked us through a few specialities only available in Alaska. Simply amazing. Definitely a must eat when in the area !

The Sakura is a hidden gem at the Alyaska Resort in Girdwood. I have eaten a lot of sushi in my life and I have to say this is the best of the BEST! My two favorite dishes are the Kobe Beef Roll and the Hustler. All I can say about them is WOW! The Alyaska Resort is an amazing place to stay and then to put Sakura in it.... I was in heaven.
