In my opinion , this is the best in anchorage ! It seems a bit like home to me. I've been Comming here since it was Pizza Pete's It's our daughter'a 18th birthday. We sang happy birthday and the whole place applauded. ( But hey, that's just Alaska). I recommend the fetticini arabiotta. (I think I may have misspelled that). But it's really good. Friendly wait staff. Great atmosphere !! Lotsa love. Dine here. Say hi to Pete. Thanks Rod

My husband and I came here in a weekday at 7 and there was only 2 or 3 other parties, but by the time we left they were 3/4s full. We got the chicken valbostana and chicken portobello, both were very delicious!! The bolognese suace was light, but the other veggies in the valbostana were ok. The portobello was super good!!! Very hearty :) the minestrone and Caesar salad were good starters, not too much and they brought the garlic bread with the entrees so we didn't get too full before hand. Our server was super friendly and the pace of dining was perfect!! I'm sure we will be back!

I would rate this place 4.5 stars for Alaska and 3.5 for other places. For Alaska this is a great restaurant, if you are from New York, Seattle, San Francisco, or Portland it is about average. Sorrento's if my favorite Italian place out of the five in Anchorage that I have tried so far and might be my favorite restaurant in town overall. Sorrento's food is great. I would recommend the Chicken a la Sorrento with the Alfredo sauce on your pasta. It costs a couple of bucks extra to get the Alfredo sauce but it is worth it. Is the food the top quality in the world? No. For this area it is probably the most consistent and flavorful food I have found. I have had seafood here and enjoyed it a lot also I am just stuck in a rut. The service is good to great depending on how busy they are. Don't expect a view, there aren't even any windows. Not uncommon for restaurants here in town and especially this area of town. It can get a little bit loud on busy nights but the food makes it worth it. Try it!

Excellent service and delicious dishes. Every time I visit I walk away feeling well taken care of and pleasantly plump. They are winning my patronage time and time again because they offer gourmet food and impeccable service.

How have I lived in anchorage for 5 years and never heard of this place?? My fiancé suggested it, and I'm so glad we came here. I got the meat and cheese ravioli with meat sauce (phenomenal) and he got spaghetti and meatballs. Both had amazing flavor! The meatballs were so flavorful and the sauce was just incredible! I enjoyed the meat ravioli slightly more than the cheese, but both were fantastic! Then for dessert, my favorite, tiramisu!!!! It was delicious!! Just a perfect meal at a great place... I will definitely be back

I tried the blackened halibut here..and it was very good. We were looking for places to have a late lunch on july 4th, and thankfully they were open. The ambience is suave, and the food well presented and tasty. We were served by Daniel ... who was extremely cheery and pleasant. Can't recommend him enough.. On the whole, a great experience! Nothing went wrong.

This was a solid dining experience! I needed reliable Italian food for the night before the half marathon and this place was it! I waited a while for a table after I arrived a little past 7. The parking lot was full so I had to park down the street which I considered a very good sign. Seemed like lots of local people although a bunch of runners as well. Once I was seated my waitress was very attentive. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs with marinara sauce, which came with a salad and garlic bread. The garlic bread, as others have noted, was very very good. The salad was mostly romaine lettuce but the blue cheese dressing was the good stuff. The pasta dish was a big portion with three large and tasty meatballs on top. All very good Italian comfort food! I left a bit of room for coffee and tiramisu, which I ended up finishing - it was too good to leave any behind! The waitress forgot my coffee though and I waited a few minutes for her to return so I could ask about it. She ended up not charging me for the coffee or the club soda I had with dinner, so I was happy!

I'm trying not to exaggerate but this is the BEST italian restaurant! The ambience was lovely. The food was exceptional! I had the halibut almondine with Alfredo pasta and my husband had the veggie penne. We also had the escargot as an appetizer and it was to die for good! First time I tried escargot and it was delicious!! We had Danny has our server and he was an exceptional! Overall this place is downright amazing.

Yes. Eat here. The food is delicious and the staff is amazing! I was raised on the amazing cuisine of my awesome (and huge) Italian family, so I have certain expectations of red sauce, pasta, meatballs, and the like. My dinner was no disappointment, that's for sure: every bite reminded me of home. The staff was also wonderful. I got an order to-go so I only spent about 5 minutes in there, but the staff treated me just like family they had known for years and I walked away with a smile on my face. I may just eat here every night of my business trip! I gave this place 5 stars because they are doing their thing exactly right. This is not a restaurant that is likely to be featured on the cover of next month's fancy New York food magazine as the latest innovation in Italian cuisine. This is a family restaurant. They make great tasting food and serve it in a comfortable environment. And in my opinion, they knocked it out of the park.

An average, middle of the road, traditional Italian resturant. Better than Olive Garden, but there are better in town. The food is generally solid, however the salads are usually not sufficiently drained. Several times I have had spaghettini which had a remarkable amount of water in the bottom of the dish. The food is tasty and the service is good. They do not take reservations.

I ordered Sorrentos to go on a Sunday at 6:00 pm. As I walked in, the aroma of garlic wafted through the air. Exactly what a good Italian restaurant needs to smell like for it to be decent. The parking lot was full when I parked so I expected a food delay, but it was ready in 20 minutes as promised. I was greeted by a friendly younger male right away once I found the front of the restaurant. ( odd set up, parking lot in back is the back of the restaurant) , he grabbed my food immediately and was super polite. I ordered the manicotti with meat sauce, and choose the salad, that comes with the meal. The salad is simple but fresh. Crisp Geen lettuce, baby tomatoes, black olives, cucumbers and dressing of choice.( no cheese ) I decided on the ranch, which had a buttermilk flavor. The manicotti noodles were large and filled to the max with ricotta and covered with mozerella. I asked for meat sauce, but did not see any difference between the mozerella stick marinara and this sauce. Disappointed. The mozerella sticks are lightly breaded and jam packed with mozerella. They are a little salty, but nothing to prevent me from ordering again. The order has 8 large mozerella sticks that comes with marinara. The sauce is more savory then sweet, and has a little heat.

We found our Italian restaurant that satisfies my picky Northern Italian husband. Best minestrone soup I've ever had. Sweet atmosphere. Taste of Sorrent was perfect, charbroiled chicken and yummy fettucini. Red wine our waitress suggested was a wonderful fit. You won't be sorry

The place may not look like much from the outside. However, for great Italian food in Anchorage, this is the place. I had the Fettuccine Arrabiatta and admittedly when it first came out, I was thinking, Meh. Then I took a bite and it was incredible! Perfectly spicy, yet not overwhelming and just so rich and creamy. Loved it! The house dressing on the salad was perfect and I loved the garlic bread. Furthermore my server was solid. He was attentive without being overbearing. If you have not been in, give this place a try!

No reservations allowed , we arrived with a party of nine. They would not see this until at least half our party was there. Service was good portions were good I ordered chicken Florentine it wasn't what I expected it was with chunks of Chicken and very little spinach but overall the flavor was good. Overall it was a decent dining experience without any hiccups.I would go back. Oh the bread was kinda cheap white bread cold and hard, the dipping herb oil was tasty.

I'm new to Anchorage, from New Jersey via San Francisco and many other places. I'm a good cook who understands food. I've been on a pizza quest since my arrival here a few months ago. I've tried Moose's Tooth, Capri, Milano, Flight Deck. They're all passably good. Sorrento's is my favorite so far. It is the closest to the real thing I've found in Anchorage. Crust is fluffy and crisp, toppings are fresh (vegetarian, so I can't comment on the meat), and the cheese is perfectly browned and welded in place. I've gotten a couple of pizzas here, consistently good. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is the sauce. For some reason, once you're away from the east coast, pizza sauce goes downhill. Sorrento's comes close, but, like almost everyplace else west of Philadelphia and east of Italy, they overcook their sauce to rust. Pizza sauce should be bright, fresh and slightly sweet. Simple tomato paste, lightly seasoned with oregano (a touch of anise or fennel if you insist) is all you really need for great pizza sauce. If they could correct that, their pizza might be worth traveling TO Anchorage for. All in all, though, a solid pie.

I have had a difficult time finding decent Eggplant Parmesan in Anchorage, until I had it at Sorrento's. It was great. The eggplant was tender and cut like butter. It's not overly breaded like another place close by. I need to try other items on the extensive menu to see if they're all good. My son had a calzone, that he thought was "pretty good" though the meat seemed to be chopped up into small pieces. Still it was the best he's had in Anchorage. I will definitely go back and recommend Sorrento's to my friends.

Let's see... Rude hostess. Very slow service. Appeared to have too few servers on duty for the level of business and time of night (6 pm). Drink service slow. Water refilled once. Soda also refilled once, very late in the meal, after the glass had sat empty for quite awhile. We saw our server when she took our orders, when she brought our food, and then not again until we flagged her down for check and boxes. Lettuce was iceberg, not romaine. I've never seen this at a restaurant before. Also, it needed to be run through a salad spinner. It was very wet and watered down the dressing. The entree (scampi di ablo) had no discernable spice and the shrimp were quite overcooked. It just wasn't particularly good. Better than Olive Garden, but not by much. Nino's and Romano's were/are far better. The sampler appetizer came with some kind of marinara-ish sauce that was very sweet and tasted canned. UPDATE 8/25/13: My entree was FAR better the next day. I now feel I got my money's worth for my food. Also, my wife says her gyro calzone was very good. Added a star to correct for this. Still can't see us going back.

  • Elaina R.

Terrible food! The veggies in the vegetable calzone tasted like they were scooped from a can. The stuffed mushrooms had the same "from a can" taste. The shrimp Alfredo tasted as if it had been frozen and then thawed more than once. The quality of food was very poor for how much it cost!

  • Kaitie S.

Good service and food. The prices are fair. I just wish they had gnocchi!!!

While growing up in Anchorage Sorrento's was by far my most favored restaurant, I even remember celebrating my birthday there a few times. I haven't been back in... 6 years? and I still have dreams about that damn italian salad dressing. I've even asked my friend that lives there to see if they'd sell her a bottle so she could ship it to me, but they said they weren't prepared to sell it like that at that time (this was a couple years ago). Perhaps they have started bottling it like they had planned to??? If anyone knows please message me!

We wen't with friends out after Fur Rondy, Sunday for dinner. It was very good except I had one complaint with an appetizer, the escargot. Breadcrums on snails even if they are in mushroom caps just doesn't work and I kept having to pick out garlic skins from each bite I had, that bothered me I was like phht, phht, pleh, WTF? I guess I'm a purest when it comes to escargot. I had the halibut with a scallop/crab/mushroom stuffing in phyllo with a lobster cream sauce, excellent. My wife had the halibut in white wine. After tasting mine she was like I should have ordered that. Minestrone soup was meh. It was a good overall meal and the service was excellent but still that escargot with skins from the garlic bud lingers in my mind. I hope they watch what their doing while prepping next time.

We have dined at Sorrento's on several occassions, but for some reason it hadn't been on our radar for several years, until recently. In the past two weeks we made our way back twice. Last night my family and I were craving pizza and having never ordered that in our previous visits to Sorrento's we decided to give them a try, ordering a small pepperoni for our daughter and a large specialty pizza for Sun and I. The pizza were excellent, especially the crust, which really makes or breaks a pizza in my book. Additionally we each enjoyed a house salad with blue cheese, also very good to excellent. I have to say though as enjoyable as our meal was, I left the reasturant and headed for my car thinking I have to get on Yelp tomorrow and write a review, not so much about the food which has always been consistently good, but about the server we had. I belive his name was Danny, and he really impressed us. It was the most enjoyable wait staff experience I have had in years, and we frequently dine out (numerous times a month). The thing that was so impressive to us, was that he was just so likable. He mastered the server part, always being on top of drinks, just the right amount of touching base, and ensuring that we were happy without interfering with our meal, but the guy did so in such a way that multiplied our dining experience. He wore a permant smile and one that seemed obviously sincere. We will certainly be back to Sorrento's and will be requesting Danny's section every time hence.

I've always had a decent time the few times I've been here. The interior is low lit, with vinyl booths and dark colored tables. Kind of reminds me of Lady and the Tramp style Italian eatery. Where is my soloist with the accordian? I ordered the Peppered steak rare, that came with a pre-dinner salad, and a side of pasta, but it came with meat sauce so I paid 5 bucks more fore cream sauce. A little odd, but moving on... My dining companion got the Fantasia Marina, which is a bunch of seafood wrapped in phyllo dough. Woah, that was one rich dish. I would say that I liked my food, but it was cooked more medium than rare, and was a little heavy on the mushroom sauce. I would like to go back to Italy someday and have some fresh pasta, but until then I will continue my search for the perfect eatery that serves great food. Service was great to start, then we were left hanging for the last part of the meal. Ehh, nothing to complain about, but something to note. Here is something to complain about. My dining companion went to the one stall loo and the chick busser (?) that came out did not wash her hands. Maybe she was standing in the stall, touching nothing, and used her foot to flush the toilet, but still, come on!!! Wash your hands!! I don't want your poop hands touching my food or silverware!

Not impressed. The manager was terrible. We had like 8-10 people. They gave us a table for six with a person on each end. Then the manager says that the server wouldn't be able to circle around another table of customers. But realistically they didn't need to do that cuz they coulda just went to the other side of the table. He made use move to the other side of the restaurant, but wouldn't put a table together even though the tables were next to each other. So we had to sit separately for someone's bday. The server (not the manager) was great. Maybe the best serve I've seen in Anchorage. It's too bad he had a dumbass manager. The gyro I had was ok. Not the best in anchorage. Overall I wouldn't go back there.

The fantasia marina is excellent! A bit kid-noisy sometimes, nice food! All in all I love the food here! We always go when in Anchorage.

Before Jenn and I found the "Place of Places", (Fiori D' Italia), we ate here at Sorrento's trying to find some good quality Italian food. I won't complain about the food, it was okay, and well prepared, and tasty, but it is small inside, not to "cozy" point, but crowded point. Ambiance is very dark, (lighting wise), and is a pain when kids run-amuck. It is worth a stop, but be aware the prices brings crowds.

This is my family's go to restaurant. Their pizza is as good as any I have found in my travels and life outside Alaska. The Italian dishes are delish, if you love cheese and pasta try the Penne al Pastor "old style" and you won't be disappointed. They are dark, romantic, and cozy so good for dates. If you are in a big group (like my family of 6) they have two large tables so you have to wait for one of them to be open, which can be tough.

3.5 stars for food. A little on the pricier end, but it is Alaska and a great choice if you're looking for a fancier Italian dinner. Most pastas range from $18-25. Each pasta comes with a selection of either salad or soup of the day (chicken and rice soup was superb.) Most pastas don't include a protein, and it costs extra to put in meat. Nonetheless, I had the Fetuccini al vino Rosso with mushrooms which was tasty. Also tried my brother's Spaghetti Carbonara was delicious. It was very creamy, so its better as a dish to share. Good portions Pizza comes in small, medium, and large. Chicken Mossino was good if you're an olive lover. Personally, I'm a bigger fan of Cheescake Factory, but my siblings think otherwise. Cheescake has a wider variety of proteins included with their pastas and broader selection in general. 4 stars for staging. A small restaurant, but did a great job with the fancy dim lighting and red table cloths. Good service and nice people- would come back.

Came here because the woman and I were craving pasta and wanted to try someplace new. We were greeted and were sat promptly. The restaurant is a little dark inside but I think that's kind of what they're going for. There are no windows inside and the space is small but they have a large mirror across on the far wall to create the illusion of space which definitely helps. Our server was very friendly and informed us that she had worked there for I think 20 years she said. That's always nice to hear. That means they must treat their employees well. I ordered the Fettuccine di Mare with spicy arrabbiate sauce (recommended by our server) and was not disappointed. It was VERY good. In fact, ever since I've had it I've been craving it. I need to go back! My woman ordered spaghetti and she said it was good as well. But she tried mine and said mine was better. I will definitely be going back in the future to get some amazing Italian food here in Anchorage. Finally!

Our first time here and they got it right. Salads came promptly, water was graciously topped off when needed, waitress was excellent. A little spendy but I think worth it. We will definitely be back and will save room for desert next time.

By far the best Italian in Anchorage. You may have to wait a bit, but the customer service is well worth it. The food is top notch and well presented. Always a great place for an intimate and romantic style dinner.

I have 3 favorite restaurants that specialize in italian food. On that list, Sorrento's is my #2 choice. Sorrento's is also my best girlfriend's all-time favorite restaurant where she can indulge in fried mozzarella cheese sticks until she has to fly home again. Sorrento's is a very solid, family italian restaurant with a wide variety of italian-esque dishes on their menu. Want some spaghetti, a steak, a pizza? There's something for everyone at Sorrento's. Everything here is pretty darn tasty. The service has always been friendly and attentive. So, whether you're on a date or out with the family, Sorrento's is a good choice.

I've tried many Italian restaurants and most come up short. Sorrento's restored my faith in "traditional" Italian restaurants here in Anchorage and now I come here often. The Fettuccini Arrabiatta is my favorite dish. Its a spicier version to the favorite Fettuccini dish which personally to me is refreshing. I'm almost addicted to it. Of course you can add chicken to it (as i do) or you can add shrimp. I'm an appetizer kind of guy so we always get the Trio which has Calamari, Fried Zucchini and Mozzarella Sticks. (Dumb rant alert) An issue I have with garlic bread in general is that its always way more bread than garlic. It may sound like a "first world problem" but here they actually give you great garlic to bread ratio. Maybe insignificant to others but that's a big plus also because it comes with the dinner. Service is good, food is great and garlic bread = win.

The only thing I miss about the East Coast is the dining. I hate New Jersey, but love the food. From the moment I walked into Sorrento's, I felt like I was back home. In Jersey and Philly, restaurants like Sorrento's are a dime a dozen, but in Anchorage Sorrento's is something unique. The mouthwatering smell of homestyle Italian food bombard your senses when you walk in and you just KNOW it's going to be good. My nose didn't let me down fo sho! I got the chicken cacciatore and my sweetie got the meat lasagne. Both were perfectly portioned and delicious. Dinner salads and garlic bread were also provided. The garlic bread is worth fighting your dinner companions for the last piece. We finished our meals with freshly ground and brewed coffee and tiramisu. The texture of the tiramisu was perfection, but the flavor was lacking. The amazing coffee made up for it. The service was exceptional as well. The second we finished with an item our server and busser appeared to attend to our needs without being intrusive. I haven't had such good service in a LONG time. The price tag was nice too. Both meals, with dessert, coffee a wine and a beer came to 32 bucks. By Anchorage standards, that's pretty damn good. WIN!

The food is barely 2 stars. The ambiance is 2 stars. The service is 3 stars. There's a bar area. But it's completely devoid of like anything. It's incredibly bland and generic in terms of ambiance / decor. And you can't order food at the bar. The seating area is dark and probably supposed to be romantic. But it's more like an undecorated old restaurant with dimmed way down lights. But it's not horribly unpleasant or anything. The server was very nice and attentive. So big pluses there. The wine list is pretty crappy. The house salad that comes with the pastas and entrees was basically a bunch of lettuce. The angel hair basil bolognese I ordered had neither basil nor bolognese. And while there were plenty of mushrooms, artichokes, and green peppers in it, they were of poor quality and weren't exactly cooked. I asked for a side of the meat sauce to see if that was any better. It did indeed look similar to the "bolognese" covering the angel hair pasta. Put it even more overwhelmingly tasted like icky Chef Boyardee from a can. The best thing at this point was actually the garlic bread that was brought out with the pasta. Far better than even the cheapo wine. Since I was still quite hungry (because I couldn't suffer through the icky pasta dish), I decided to take a gander at the dessert menu. I ordered the spumoni. Seemed safe. And hurray, the ice cream was filing and tasted normal. So in sum, if you actually want some decent pasta, don't come here.

I was really hoping this place would be good, but sadly I was wrong. The host was rude as hell she ignored us the whole time we were waiting. The server we had was incompetent and could not do more then one thing at a time. We had to ask the bus boy for refills and she never checked on us after we got our food. The spaghetti sauce was not any better, I could get better sauce from a jar of Prego. The only this good about this place was their garlic bread.

This place has the WORST service. Sometimes I don't mind the worst service if the food is super delicious but this is not even the case.... We went their during dinner time and ordered their meat lover's pizza, stuffed halibut and almond halibut dish. Both halibut dishes were good but the pizza was quite disappointing. We were seated very quickly but it took us more than 15 minutes to place our order. Server did not apologize. We asked for bread that most italian restaurants give out during dinner time and the server said "okay" and brought us a basket of bread. When we asked for another basket of bread she very rudely said something under her breath. At this point we were thinking 'whatever... let's just get through this meal'. When we got our bill they had charged us 5.95 for basket of bread. When we talked to the server about why we were charged for the bread she said that she had informed us about how 2nd basket of bread was 5.95. We did not hear her muttering words. She scoffed at us and walked away as she was saying that she needs to talk to her manager. We just left our money on the table and walked out. RUDE service/server. I will not be going back to this restaurant.

We have been twice now and it is amazing each time. The first visit was filled with the best stuffed mushrooms I have ever had, and halibut stuffed with shrimp and scallops baked in filo dough in a lobster cream sauce. So. Good. Our last visit consisted of a fettuccine with seafood. Again. So good. I am so very glad to see that they actually have proper portions. They don't heap the pasta on the plate in a manner where after you're full, it looks as if you haven't touched anything. I like less waste and I can't wait to go back for more.

This place is great! A little busy but yummy for sure. I had a salad with stuffed mushrooms, the homemade italian dressing is deeeelish! My BF had the angel hair a la greca w/chicken. His meal came with a personal garlic bread basket. I stole a couple of bites, it tasted like BUTTER (which I love) I will return and try their pizza, I have had their calzones for p/u in the past and those were great too.

This place was not bad. Food was okay and so was the service. Ambience was nice. Otherwise, nothing extraordinary (hence the rating). Note that we did not try the pizza, which is what many other reviews rave about.

I gave Sorrento's another shot about 3 weeks ago and, sadly, was still unimpressed with the food. The service was very good, but the food was just so-so. Pastas are not homemade, and the sauces are bland...

solid. the atmosphere is predictable, cozy but not dark. the staff was warm but not overly aggressive. the food was yummy. the calamari was not the usual "o"s, but strips, not overly fried. our meals were filling, but not overabundant. overall, just what we wanted. we were looking for a go-to italian place in anchorage having just moved here a few months ago and think we may have found it. i'm reserving the 5 start review for our next visit.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
