The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

So far my favorite restaurant in Anchorage. Got the crusted halibut and I was in heaven. My kids liked their pizza's. The hubby got the chicken saltimbocca, and while we all thought it was very tasty, he said he wouldn't order it again (probably because mine was that much more phenomenal than his). Creme brûlée was awesome. Prices were overall decent. Service was better than most restaurants we've been to here in Anchorage; refills were on point. Totally looking forward to coming here again!

Very disappointed in this dining experience. Service was thw worst I have ever experienced at a supposedly fine dining establishment. Had a crave for authentic italian and left wishing I had settled for Olive Garden. I was so annoyed when I finally received my check that I paid without fully examining it. When I get home I notice it was incorrect and I was overcharged. Ugh. This night just went from bad to worse. Romano's it will be a while before I am back. Major bad taste after dining there.

Favorites: Seafood Pizza and Pesto Linguini. This is not to be mixed up with chain Romano's Macaroni Grill. Romano's is a locally-owned Alaskan restaurant with well-proportioned, tasty pasta and pizza outside the ordinary. The creamy pesto linguini is great with bread, and most definitely filling. One thing I like about pasta and pizza is that it still tastes decent as leftovers. The seafood pizza is one of my favorites because it's not made with marinara, but with shrimp, crab, scallops, lobster and a savory white sauce. Prices aren't low, but not too high, and the staff is helpful and attentive. BTW, I didn't have any photos of my food because I ate it too quickly!

I avoided Romano's for years, partly because I am slow to embrace any Italian restaurants right off the bat (I'm very picky about my Italian food), partly because of a couple of bad Italian food experiences elsewhere in Anchorage, and partly because I've heard it's a popular high school dance restaurant (an association that always makes me wary). Walking into this place, I felt like I had walked back in time (or into an old Vegas restaurant called Battista's--similar look). The decor is total seventies Baroque American-Italian. Pretty amazingly bad, but somehow comfy. Darkly garish. I had no idea what to expect of the food. Turns out, it's delicious! Rarely am I impressed by a restaurant's spaghetti and meatballs. So I don't indulge often while out, but this place did it just like I like it. First, I had it with the bolognese sauce (which, if you call it that to some of the servers can confuse them: "oh, you mean the meat sauce." So, obviously not all of them eat Italian much). Soooo good and meaty. The sauce is savory, not too sweet (a failing at many restaurants), and just the right tomato zest. As for the meatball, it's how meatballs should be, to me: thick and perfectly spiced, on the oregano/basil side (so, it wasn't just a ball of meat with little else). My other favorite dish is a regular special, the pasta carbonara, otherwise known as a heart attack on a plate. Creamy and delectable, with prosciutto and peas and butter. Perfect! They do chicken well, veal well, cocktails well, and the wine list is ok, not great, but a cheap red with my pasta suits me fine. Like eating in Italy. I don't mind small portions when the food is good. But portions aren't a problem here--they are huge! I can get two to three meals from my servings. That's extra awesome when we get takeout because I don't have to think about cooking for a few days. I like the staff, from the adorable host (who has a fun sense of style--I notice these things) to the servers, who are always nice: chatty when you're up for it, respectfully distant when you're not. They add a lot to the comfy ambiance. I just enjoy being here. It's relaxing. So, look beyond the dark exterior to the shining food inside, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

First time tonight at Ramano's. Was anticipant due too the reviews but decided to go and try it. I have had plenty of Italian food and even been to Italy with husband so we know what good Italian food is. We ordered the calamari which was okay, but it was cut into thick strips like chicken fingers. Really odd as I have never had calamari like that before. Nothing too special to say about the appetizer. My husband ordered the eggplant parmesian and I ordered a spicy penny pasta. The noodles were a tad overcooked and overall nothing special to keep me going back. As many have said on the comments it is very overpriced for mediocre food. The service was good. This is sad to say but OLIVE GARDEN IS BETTER. Just don't waste your time and money.

Not sure how to rate Romano's. I've been here half a doze times over the course of the last few years. Never blown me away, and never disappointed. My father loves this place, largely because they are clean and he is a parasitologist (look it up). I'm a microbiologist, so I can sympathize, but I'm also a foodie and like to eat good food. Romano's would not be my first choice, nor would it be my last. Of course, in the food-for-value column, Romano's would score pretty low. The costs are pretty high even for Anchorage. Higher than they should be, by quite a bit. And that really sums it up - meh. Not bad, not great. The ravioli was tasty. The filet, not so much. The mashed potatoes were bad. The fettucini alfredo with chicken was good. The house-made bread was excellent. A descent wine selection as well. The service was dismal. Maybe because our server was a bit overwhelmed by a couple of larger tables. But 15 minutes for drinks for 3 of us? Not good. The decor is nice but outdated. By about 20 years. If you're in serious need of Italian food in Anchorage, Romano's is not a bad stop. Don't expect 5-star cuisine. It isn't here. But the food is good, overall. Not worth the cost, however.

Ive eaten here many times and tried most of the menu. Consistent...... Predictable...... Satisfying. Most shocking was the Ribs.... You wouldn't expect amazing ribs at a Italian restaurant..... WIN.

Decent place to get a quick pasta fix. Their portions are huge. We ordered the clams casino as a starter and was practically full from that and the complementary bread. I had the clam linguini pasta and it was average. Sauce was thick but I enjoyed the garlic taste. Tried some of my fiance's steak special and it was pretty tasty. Overall, this is just an average restaurant with nothing really outstanding.

I have loved Romano's for many years now. I lived out of state for five years and have recently returned to Anchorage. Romano's is just as wonderful as it always was. The food just melts in your mouth. The service is great. The same hostess is still there ever since I first became a regular 15 years ago, and she is really nice. Everyone there is great, including the bartenders. The lounge is lovely and often I have had my dinner right there. The ambiance is wonderful. Highly recommend!

This place kinda just screams Olive Garden. It's rather bland and boring. Both the food and the atmosphere. Our server, though, was very friendly and attentive. But outside of that, this was a total meh dining experience. The food is just not good. I even opted for basic - spaghetti with meat sauce and bruschetta. Neither were particularly edible.

Went with my family first off our waiter was awesome! He was so attentive and entertained our 2 year old girl every time she would talk to him. We ordered the fried mozzarella for appetizer. It was ok next time we will order a different one. And I gave four star because usually pasta places a salad or soup comes with your meal. Well when we asked our waiter said it's $1.50 for a nice size fresh salad. And all the dressings are homemade. Salad wasn't that good either. My husband ordered the chicken Marsala, he said was ok, I ordered the shrimp pasta with tomato cream sauce and it was very good and there is no kids menu so we ordered them a cheese ravioli to split. Fresh bread they bake themselves comes with your meal that's always nice.

Used to come here monthly with friends, but life got busy and it's been a bit. Had a date night with hubby and was pleasantly surprised to come here. It's been WAY too long. Best traditional Italian in town. Service was friendly and quick. Iced tea and water was frequently refilled. The veal Parm was very very good. And the cheesecake was to die for. Am so happy we went...and we will revisit soon!

This was the first I came here. I ordered the pesto dish which doesn't come with anything, so I had either choice of chicken or shrimp for extra cost. I went with shrimp. Price of the dish is overly priced! The complimentary bread was okay but the sauce that had olive oil and some other things in it was just gross. Server was decent. The food came at a good time. My dish wasn't worth for what I paid for. Honestly, I got food poisoning from here. Not coming here again!

Been going here for as long as I can remember. When both my kids were born, 19 & 16 now, Nic brought over TO THE HOSPITAL, my wife's favorite meals. A must if you haven't been there. Good food with generous helpings and very good prices. Skip the box store Italian and do it right the first time!

Excellent LOCAL Italian restaurant! We have been going to this restaurant since before they were located in their current building! The food and service is always superb and VERY consistent! It is a large restaurant and although they don't take reservations, we have NEVER had to wait even at prime time on Saturday night! Our favorites are the Halibut and Scampi de la Casa. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

My wife and I usually eat here once or twice a month and drop about $100 each visit. We usually sit in Matt's section but he wasn't working. Matt is absolutely on point and gets everything right 100% of the time. We sat down and waited about 10 to 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. We ordered our drinks, appetizer, salad, and our meal. Drinks took a while to make it to our table. Appetizer was out in about five minutes. Salads never came out. My wife's halibut was undercooked in the middle. We brought it to the managers attention, who seemed like she could care less. I was eating my last bite, when I found a big black hair on my plate. I don't have a problem paying for good food and good service, but when you screw up, own up to it. At least act interested in fixing the problem. They comped our entrees, but never even offered an apology. This place is hit or miss, depending on who your server is and who is in the kitchen.

Was hoping to be a regular but had such a bad experience will likely drop Romano's from my list of go to places. Food has been mediocre the last few visits. Tonight, while eating in the bar the bartender pushed me over the edge. More interested in flirting than serving. Waited nearly 20 mins for the salad. Then she dropped a tray full of plates and ordered the young bus boy to clean it up as she flirted with the drunk at the bar. Even the table behind me commented "we weren't sure if you were still working, it's been awhile." Her responce, "it's busy tonight," ...there were only two tables and two customers at the bar...only one person was getting her attention.

This would be a good place to take your wife or girlfriend for dinner, or maybe have a business lunch. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The water even tasted good and was filled many times. The prices are a little high, but within reason. Parking was good but a little difficult to get in and out for someone who was not familiar with the area.

Gotta admit for some reason I've always been hesitant about eating here but we went the other day & it was pretty good...There were definitely a few misses but nothing bad enough to not go back. For starters, the pasta for an Italian joint was overcooked - way overcooked, almost mushy. But the shrimp were cooked perfect & the tomato cream sauce was pretty good - not over-creamed nor too tomato-y. I could totally eat that again if the pasta was cooked al dente. I am curious as to where or who thinks its wise to add a piece of sliced processed cheese to the salads (oddly enough, Sorrento's does this too)...I've never heard or seen such a phenomenon before. "I know what will make this salad that much better.... a little piece if sliced, processed cheese!" The decor is definitely something worth mentioning too....I feel as if I could've been an extra in Caligula when I walked in. The biggest issue though was the heat!! It was so freakin' HOT in there, to the point that we were too uncomfortable to finish our wine! I did look around & notice a lot of elder people but still??!! Breaking a sweat (our table was next to the entrance too!) while eating dinner is no fun!

Had the Veal Marsala and the Salmon and Artichoke dip. The dip was truly delicious. I would order that again. But my main dish, Veal Marsala, was bland as water. Which seems to be the story with their entrees. I couldn't believe something that looked good and the texture was there could be so far off on flavor.

Service: SLOW. 10 minutes before we were greeted by a server. 30 minutes before we ordered (even though we were ready by the time the server first came). ONE HOUR before dinner arrived. We had to ask for more water even though our water glasses were empty. Food: Pretty good. Caesar salad was big, bread warm, eggplant parmesan yummy! Prices: Reasonable for the amount of food you get.

I would agree with the other reviews that the prices are too high for the quality. I have no qualms spending $18 for a seafood scampi at Villa Nova because I know it's going to be good. At Romano's not so much. The flavors aren't as complex...it's just not what I would consider 'fine food.' The cheap chianti was good for the price, and I tasted the seafood lasagna that was pretty delicious. But, I won't be back. And btw, does anybody else think the place looks like the inside of a Hilton hotel lobby?

Tried the seafood linguini, and the chicken pesto pizza....both were great! The restaurant is a little dated on the inside, and a little scary on the outside, but very comfortable, with good service, and a nice atmosphere. The restaurant is very large, and could easily accomodate 200 by my estimate. Recommended!

Can I give this place a ZERO star rating?!!! My lasagna was COLD, pizza was dry, and my pasta tasted just like my pizza. Everything tasted the same, microwaved, and just disgusting. PLUS! I was sick for two days after eating here. There is no natural light in this restaurant and the carpet does not suit the interior decor at all.

Had dinner at Romano's recently in a medium sized group. We were seated immediately and our waitress was very nice. Romano's has a nice ambience about it, not too brightly lit, yet not dark enough to pull out a flash light. Food and drinks were served equally fast, and the chicken fettuccine I ordered was amazing. Their cheesecake is also to die for.

Went on a Thursday night. The place was beautiful. Our server was awesome. We ordered appetizers and it was served to us in less than five minutes. Our entrees came out just as fast. I had the Cioppino and I recommend it! It was delicious! Great service, food and experience!

Been there 3 times and each time was worse than the time before. staff are incredibly rude, management is snarky and condescending. Food was horrible. egg shells in the cheese riccotta the first meal I had there. I honestly dont know how they stay in business. If I could give ZERO STARS I would. Do not go there with a large party, they will not seat you together and they didn't bother to mention it when the reservations were made. If you want good italian avoid this place.

Not a bad Italian place, but nothing special. Admittedly though, I have near impossible standards for Italian food. My grandmother was a full blooded Sicilian and cooked 90% of my meals growing up. My reason for giving the 2 stars was the service. It was my father and I in the middle of the week, and the restarant was less than half full. We were sat right away, and the service was slow. By slow I mean it took 10 minutes for the server to come by (and yes, I timed it... I used to work food service and was always vvery picky with service times). Another 5 to get our drinks (cokes and a beer). The appetizer came out fine, but the salads didn't make it out till the food did. Also, just as an odd note... I don't think an employee there looked under 50. Could it be that my dad and I weren't dressed up (We were in polos?) and they thought they weren't going to get a good tip?

I've been to Romano's twice now. I like it. Both times the food had been great and the staff friendly. The restaurant is big with good spacing between tables. You don't feel like you are joining someone else for dinner. We did three courses, appetizers, salad and entrees. For the appetizers we ordered garlic bread and bruschetta. The garlic bread was not anything special nor was it bad. I think it was appropriately priced. The bruschetta was great. The tomatos were tasty and well seasoned. The salads were good but not amazing. They did the trick as far as having a vegetable with our meals. The entrees were very good. My wife had the lasagna and I had the Chicken Marsala. The portions were plenty big, we ended up with left overs. The marinara used in the Lasagna was very good. It's my understanding that most everything is made in house, you could taste that fact in the sauce. My Marsala was good but not too adventurous in the flavor. It was a solid Marsala. I imagine the flavor is toned down a bit for the general population. Overall we had a great time. The food is good. The staff is great. The price is what I have come to expect from the Anchorage area.

The BEST Italian restaurant in town! Very friendly staff and a very classy interior atmosphere. I love the stuffed mushrooms and the steak! This is a very elegant restaurant, hanging chandeliers, paintings of Italy, candles. This place is as GOOD as it gets for Italian food here in Alaska.

Only at here once and that is all it took. The food is not so good. Everything I had was just drowning in cheese and aside from that pretty much flavorless. The inside feels like one of those fake 70's Italian restaurants and the food pretty much matches.

Perfect. Party of 4 for dinner... Had their penne arribiatto, the shrimp, and their specials. Everyone loved their food (and im picky!) and the service was wonderful. Their waiters know what theyre doing. Nice atmosphere...surprised at the quality in comparison to their very reasonable prices!

Jenn and I stopped in on a Saturday Night because they began to serve CIOPINNO! I had to try it. I was a little disappointed when I read the menu and they offered both a white cream garlic sauce, and the standard red sauce. Also I was surprised to see they put fettuccine in the mix. I asked the chefs why, and found the answer favorable and understanding....in Alaska, folks like a "heartier" menu, and adding this seems to have gained alot of fans...I am proud to say I am one..I will forever miss Tarintino's and Little Joe's, but until I can eat there again....this is not so bad...stop by!

This was my second time eating dinner at Romano's. The service each time was good. The food was not great or something I would recommend. I had the cannelloni my first visit and fettuccine with sausage and scallops this time. Each visit the food tasted bland and unseasoned. This last visit was Mother's Day and it took an hour and a half for us to receive our food - this is after we waited an hour to be seated because we had a group of 8. Now I had just been to another local Italian restaurant (see the review) and the food was so much better.

My dad and I received great service. We sat at one of the booths in the bar area, which was a /little/ ghetto because we were right under one of the TVs, so there was no light above us and it was dark, but then again, we did choose that because we didn't want to wait for a table in the dining area. The fried mozzarella is really good. I had the lasagna. I think they may have the best lasagna in Anchorage. Certainly better than Pizza Olympia's. Who puts carrots in lasagna? Anyway, now I've been to Romano's several times, so I think overall, it's a good restaurant. I wish it had some windows, even if it is open for dinner and it's dark outside anyway. It feels subterranean without windows.

We ate at Romano's for the first time because we were looking for Italian. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and polite hostess. We were seated immediately but had to wait longer than we liked for our drinks, especially when our waitress said she'd be right back. The bread is nothing special; its reminiscent of a normal loaf of bread you'd have at home. The italian dressing is made in-house (that's what we were told) and I thought it was pretty delicious. I ordered the Scampi Della Casa and it was the wrost scampi I think I've ever had. They served the prawns butterfly style in the shell still. I know they're prawns and all, but its not lobster! They were very difficult to peel out of the shell, way more work than it should take eat shrimp. The scampi sauce wasn't very good either. I definitely did not find it a meal worth $18 and was very disappointed. My husband ordered the Shrimp Romano and that was great in my opintion. It is prawns stuffed (I can't remember with what) and wrapped in bacon. We don't plan to return

There was just TOO much seafood, and I don't think the prawns were cooked right. We probably won't go here anymore.

We have eaten here many times, but the Hostess is rude and acts like she owns the place. Hostess gets upset if you don't sit where she wanted to put you. Food is usually okay, but I do find the center of manicotti is always cold. This particular night there were 8 of us. We waited forever for our food, the waiter's were delayed. We finally got our food. We all ate and chatted. No one asked if we wanted coffee or dessert because the hostess had come back to our table several times to see if we were done, feeling pressured to hurry. Hurry? They are the ones who took forever for the food to come out. (which we never complained). The bill came out and as I was signing it and talking the bus boy/man was cleaning EVERYTHING off our table. I told him to stop as it was very rude to clean the table completely off and take our drinks without asking. He said nothing and continued to remove everything to wipe down the table. My husband and I we very mad they pushed us out for the next people who were waiting. I mentioned it to the Hostess (the one that's been there forever) and she just smiled and said she was sorry. When we got outside we decided the owner should know we were rushed out and our drinks were taken before we were finished. So I called the owner Andrew and told him and he made many excuses for them and then finally said he would ask about what happened. He called 3 days later to inform me that he found nothing wrong that night. That the hostess says I complain all the time (only about the seat she tries to put me at EVERYTIME I'm there). We have never returned our food or complained. I told the owner that I was appalled at her comment and that she's usually a rude person anyways and she doesn't like me because she tries to sit me at a table she knows I don't like. Yes I ask for a different place to eat at, but who doesn't...this makes me a bad customer. So I said to him, common sense should tell you that if I were a constant complainer I would not come back and he would have heard from me before now....makes sense right? He say's too me.."What would you like me to do?" I said refund me the 4 drinks we had and that would be fine.....$11.00 dollars on a 126.00 bill and he said no. So I am going to write this story every time I can and I am contacting the BBB to let them know what a crappy business Andrew is running. He is very hard to talk to and rude also. He told me don't be surprised if I come back in and the Hostess refuses me....That's when I knew I was dealing with a total idiot. Refuse a GREAT customer all because of one complaint, how about I won't ever be back and there are several people that won't go there either. So for complaining it gave the hostess permission to refuse service too me. I cannot believe there are such ignorant people in business. His hostess is not an asset to his company, she's never happy.
