My friends and I headed to Kriner's after the UAA gear swap yesterday. I was really excited to have a new diner in town and wanted to see how it fared. The parking lot was almost full when we got there at about 10 am, but even so there were three empty tables (for four) and a booth opening up as well, so plenty of seating inside. It was clean and comfy and reminded me of the diners in the tiny towns in the Midwest where I grew up, so I felt at home. Their menu looks like a newspaper with Alaska facts on the two outer pages as well as information about the family who owns and runs the place. I liked that a lot. They mention that they are conservatives and there's no French toast on the menu (frankly, I just found it amusing- are we still hating the French?), and while I could forever do without anything approaching politics while I'm trying to eat, I got over it when I saw the prices. *Such* good prices! A three egg breakfast with hash browns and toast for only $5! And when you order coffee with the meal, it's only 50 cents! I can't think of another place in town other than McDonald's where you can get breakfast that cheap. And you aren't going to get food this tasty or this much of it at MickeyDs. The hash browns were perfectly cooked- crispy yet soft in the middle and not greasy. I was ridiculously impressed and ended up eating so many that I couldn't finish my eggs. I got the meal which included bacon (around $8) and was slightly disappointed with my bacon. It was not undercooked, but was floppy rather than crispy. But I also didn't specify crispy, so I'll ask for that next time. The bacon itself was not too fatty and there was a ton of it- I think six medium-thick strips. Way more than I could eat. Snow City Cafe is still my favorite bacon in town, but this is runner-up. I got a side of the biscuits and gravy just to try it. I am pretty particular about biscuits and gravy. I have yet to find someone in town that does it perfectly, but Kriner's does it the best I've seen up here and I'll be getting it when I go back. It was a little greasy, but proper biscuits and gravy *should* be. It was the right color, the sausage was chopped up nicely and there was plenty of pepper in it. High marks, though I'm still trying to find something as good as my Dad's. The eggs were cooked perfectly (also not greasy), as was the toast. Those things shouldn't be hard to do, but from what I've seen, it takes a well-run kitchen to get it right every time. They have managed that even though they are new (though the family is not new to running restaurants). No problems with service either. They were around to our table a *bunch* of times for coffee refills and our waitress paid us plenty of attention without bothering us too much. All in all an excellent diner and really great prices. The lunch and dinner menu also looked good, but I was focused on breakfast so I didn't pay much attention to those. I'll have to check them out when I go back.

After an incredibly long wait (20 min) and still no acknowledgment from the servers and obvious signs of eating behind the line and the chef wiping sweat off his head with no hand wash follow up-- yea, I'll never be eating here.... EVER

Poor service, no ambiance, food was mediocre and pricy for breakfast but at least there was a lot of it.

Big portions and reasonable prices. If you can stand the menu with the conservative politics its a great place

We've been trying out dinners all winter and Kriner's simple wins the contest hands down. The service is superb and the breakfast and lunches are excellent. We ate with another couple they ordered and really liked the American Toast and a Egg & Potato Slam. I'd give Kriner's 5 stars if they served more than Folger's class coffee and they used regular hamburger buns. Instead they use large Texas toast. That makes their Rubin sandwich outstanding but our 1/2 # burger was lost in the bread.

Extremely slow service and cold, mediocre food does nothing for me...I'll take my money elsewhere.

My friend and I dined at Kriner's in an ironic sense recently because we are both left leaning liberals and we heard that the restaurant wears its conservative politics on its sleeve, but welcomes all customers despite their political views. Sure enough, Fox News on the big screen, Nixon poster on the wall, and patriotic deco, all tastefully done. Being one of those rare Alaskan vegetarians, I wasn't expecting much from the menu, but I was pleasantly surprised at the clean atmosphere, polite and friendly staff, and a nice diner feel. The breakfast menu is great and served all day. I had the "American" Toast to see if it was any different from French Toast: nope, but still very tasty. The rest of menu is geared more towards the classic American diner menu. My beef eating friend had an Andy burger with "American" fries which he decided was markedly delicious. We both found the political commentary on the menu hilarious and unabashedly straightforward. This is a great place for red state burger lovers and the owners are proud of it. I plan on bringing many of my more conservative minded family members here to dine next time they are visiting Anchorage.

I've only eaten here one time and I'm resistant to want to base a review on one meal, since many of the things I saw folks eating looked pretty good. I personally ordered the cornbeef hash. I didn't really care for it, but I know some folks really like it. It was a bit to greasy for my liking but like I said many other things looked good. I'm going to reserve judgement on this one until I've had the opportunity to go back again and try something else. For now I'll just give them 3 stars, and will update my review status on my next visit.

Everything's hot, everything's fresh, service is good, the place is clean, the plates are LARGE (best bang for your buck in town I've seen thus far), and the food is tasty. You can get ANY type of meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) at ANY time of day. Nice. Yes, this is a diner. Yes, your food will likely not be healthy, but DAMN will it be tasty. Kriner's does diner food, and it does it good. The breakfasts are stellar (over-easy eggs are spot-on every time, everything's hot, and the sourdough toast is to DIE for...no seriously, you'll get a coronary if you eat it daily...soooo much butter...so tasty), and the hamburgers are DELICIOUS! I am obsessed with hamburgers, and I honestly think Kriner's cheeseburger is right up there with my Pop's homemade burgers. Despite being a pinko-tree-hugging-liberal, I have to say that I really like Kriner's Diner. Yes, the menu has some conservative ideology in it, but nothing like the crazy sh*t we see on Fox News everyday, and as long as I don't have to hear about it while I'm eating, no harm, no foul. Just order your tasty food, give back the menu, and be polite to the waitstaff. They were friendly, polite and prompt for the three times my husband and I have visited (all different times of day), so I'm not sure where the mad complainers ate, but it doesn't appear to be here. (I don't know what Teresa C's deal is...apparently good food and a friendly wait staff are so last year for her. Maybe move somewhere else and don't go to self-professed "diners"?) (Side note: Tamar F., since when does old-STYLE American diner food have to actually be made in an old establishment? It's nice that a fairly new diner is doing the classics and doing them well.) True, the political culture in the U.S. today is polarized, but you're just as much to blame for the current situation as the other side if you refuse to associate with others (or berate them publicly and encourage others to avoid them) because they dare to profess their views (without pushing you to accept them). Branch out, kids. Try Kriner's Diner - and realize that everyone's just trying to keep on keepin' on, the way they know how. Put a face on "the other side" and see that they look a lot like you (and make some damn good food).

It was my second time at Kriner's today and my husband's first. The last time I had a great experience, this time it was just meh. We sat in a corner booth, near the door. It was a little chilly inside, but I don't know if it was because of where we sat or if the whole place was cool. The food had a good flavor, but the service was veeeeery slow this time. My husband ordered the Ted's Big Breakfast and I had oatmeal. By the time we got it, everything was lukewarm. Even my tea, which I like piping hot, was lukewarm. I suspect this was because of our waitress letting it sit for too long. Had she been more attentive and given us a nice, hot meal I would've given it a star or two more.

I like this place, but there are a few things that annoy me. They do serve good home cooked food and the wait staff do a good job. The things that I don't like are that the owners use their menu and signs to push their political agenda and they had NASCAR on the TV on a Sunday morning when the customers who were there wanted to watch the NFL.

I have mixed feelings about this place... I tried their breakfast and lunch... For breakfast I got a breakfast sandwich which is meat, cheese, egg on an English muffin and it came with a side of hash browns. The hash browns were delicious. I know people like their hash all sorts of ways but I like mine crisp on top and mushy of potatoes at the bottom, that's how Kriners does them. My breakfast sandwich wasn't anything to brag about... For lunch I got grilled cheese and tater tots. It was alright, nothing special. I wish this place had more options to choose from, healthy options mostly. I guess this is a place to come when you don't diet. Haha. I would go back and try something different.

I finally paid my first visit to Kriner's Diner after hearing good things about the place. I ordered a burger topped with bacon, crispy fried onion straws, and jalapeno cheddar cheese. The burger was really tasty. As noted on the menu, they hand-form their own burgers rather than using those stretchy frozen disks alot of restaurants serve. I ordered fries on the side and liked that they serve krinkle cuts. The menu's a little limited to fattening fare -- lots of burgers & sandwiches & hearty breakfast food. We couldn't help but notice that alot of the patrons were a bit chunky so maybe that's their target audience. One member of our party is on a doctor-ordered low-fat low-cholesterol diet & didn't find too much of interest on the menu except for a turkey sandwich, which she said was 'just okay.' She ordered a salad on the side & it was pretty boring -- the sort of thing restaurants served back in the 80s with iceberg lettuce and sliced mushrooms and shredded cheddar cheese and such. She left most of it behind on the plate. So I'd say to only go there if you're ready to really dig in and pig out. A good dinner-portion salad would be a welcome addition to the menu with salad greens or spinach and loaded with vegetables and maybe some of that turkey they roast for their sandwiches. Junk food is all well & good, and I'm not saying they should go vegan or vegetarian, but a little variety on the menu would be better in order to accomodate a wider range of diets. We were the last party seated before they closed at 8pm on a Friday night. It would be nice if they stayed open a little later on the weekends because they were turning people away while we finished our dinner. Oh and I was a little leery of visiting Kriners because I'd read they toss around alot of conservative political opinions but I didn't see anything of the kind during my visit. All in all, it's a good place to go if everyone in your party is looking to fill up on stick-to-your-ribs fare.

Fairly busy but not packed. Decent food. I had the Waffle with blueberries 5.50. Coffee only one dollar but a little watered down. Service was a little slow. Menus are on newspaper. Not bad overall. I'd probably go back if I'm in the neighborhood.

If anyone says "let's go to Kriner's", I jump on the opportunity right away to go. I don't care if both of my legs and arms are broken, I'll find a way. Nothing could keep me from this place except a divine mandate from God Himself. Need more? Fine. This is a family owned and run place that runs like a well oiled machine. It's full of familial charm and ambience and no pretense; just food that is amazing. They have a whole plate of nothing but Thanksgiving food with all the fixings. If you're on a diet, do not go here...you will screw it all to hell. If you want comfort food and intend to run a lot later? You're golden. And now I want to go again and get some chicken fingers...

Very, very busy during weekend breakfast and brunch hours. It was just crowded and chaotic with waiters and waitresses hustling and bustling to meet the needs of all these hungry patrons. They were so busy, that it took them a bit to even acknowledge that we were waiting to be seated. This place is a bit small, and the layout seems a bit messy and doesn't flow well in my opinion. It could be so much more efficient. Speaking of efficient, I really liked the sense of teamwork that the waiters had. The service was as good as it could be, considering how busy it was when we were there. This restaurant is family friendly so bring anyone! I also think it's funny how the menus are printed on newsprint. When you walk in, it feels like being in the past since everyone looks like they're reading the morning paper. Their faces are just buried in that paper. The food you ask? Today I had the reindeer sausage skillet and I was pretty content with it, except it had very little reindeer sausage. It was very filling though and held me over for the rest of the afternoon. For $14.49 it's a generous amount of food. Honestly the breakfast looked and tasted very basic. The ingredients were all piled on top of each other on a skillet, but that was about it. I think what took away from the skillet feel is that the gravy for the biscuit was in a small plastic bowl, inside the skillet, with the rest if the food. The temperature was also not very skillet-like. We still enjoyed our visit and look forward to trying new items. There's so much potential, and I sure hope to see this place get more awesome.

Wonderful as always. 2 up. Ha the homemade corned beef hash again. Eggs over easy and sourdough toast. Excellent

Went here on a whim because snow city cafe had an hr wait . I got the chicken fried steak with gravy and sour dough toast with over easy eggs. My three other friends got the eggs, biscuit and gravy with bacon on the side . The portions are HUGE! We could've gotten two dish and shared it among the four of us . The gravy was good . I liked the chicken fried steak as well. A side order of bacon will cost you 6 dollars but they weren't skimpy on that either . I also tried their coffee which was mild . I like the coffee a little stronger and darker , but it wasn't disgusting coffee . Overall , a solid place to have breakfast .

Kriner's has a lot going against it. It's a cursed location that's extremely difficult to access unless you're driving southbound C Street from downtown. But if the food were good enough people would go. But Kriners is doomed unless they figure out what the hell they're doing. It looks like a smallish bistro inside, rather than a diner. Cute, actually, with a lot of potential. I don't know how they have the nerve to call themselves a diner with such a limited menu. Our food was sooo flavorless, except my salad dressing, which may well have been rancid. The only thing diner-y about Kriner's is that they must keep their food under heat lamps since it came out in a flash and the texture reflected this. If the prices were diner-y, I would be more forgiving. But 32 bucks plus tip for chicken fried steak and a shitty burger with super small salad gave me a serious case of buyer's remorse. I'm really disappointed.

At the recommendation of a local we had to give this place a try and we were so glad we did! The service was great! Fast and friendly. The food is what really sets this place apart. The portions were large and everything we had tasted really good. I had to try the donut bacon cheeseburger, which the server rx'd. I wasn't sure what to think after reading what it had but thought I had to try it, it wouldn't be on the menu if people didn't like it. The flavors all worked well together, I liked getting the sweet of the donut with the savory/saltiness of the bacon and burger. I opted for salmon chowder instead of fries which was also tasty. I was really satisfied with my meal, as was everyone else at our table. We ended up here on their 1 year anniversary by chance and they were giving out free slices of cake. There was no way I had enough room to eat anymore so we decided to share a piece and force it down, even their cake was awesome! I could imagine the rest of their desserts being really good too. I wish we would have made a second stop here instead of some of the other places in Anchorage we visited.

This is where I go when I just can't give a rat's ass about my caloric intake. Andy's Awesome burger is, without a doubt, the best burger I've ever had. The breakfast is good, too, but since having that burger, I can't bring myself to order anything else.

Busy brunch crowd. Menu printed on newsprint great food fast service. Set up seems awkward you enter directly into the dinning room and it does not say so but I found my own seat 4 stars on food 2 on layout and flow

My favorite breakfast place in Anchorage. It reminds me of my moms home cooking and be prepared to eat when you come. Their portions are huge!! One of their famous skillets will feed two people and probably three people. Friendly servers and delicious food! Try the reindeer sausage skillet :D nom nom nom

AGAIN Kriners serves up great food, excellent price and very, extremely patient and understanding wait staff. The Fish and Chips are British import approved. Every meal I have ever had from there has been great and I thank them every time. Cannot wait for the new place to open soon.

Buttery but crispy BLT was perfect especially on their homemade bread. The fries did seem to be on the generic side compared with the sandwich. BLT is my favorite sandwich and I have literally had it over 50 times and this was honestly one of my favorite times of having it. I really hope they add a solid french fry to that sandwich because those crinkle cuts scream BASIC while the BLT screams AMAZING.

After reading all the complimentary Yelp reviews, I was hot to try Kriner's Diner breakfasts that multiple Yelpers raved about. Taking out of town visitors, there were four in our group, with two cars. Maybe we hit a slow time for the day, but we had no problems with parking or getting a table right away. The service was fine, nothing memorable one way or another. The place was clean enough. No matter where they fall on the spectrum, smart business people keep their religion and their politics private because when they don't, they do lose business. Normally, it angers me a little when I am forced to watch or listen to Fox, that fake news channel shoveling depressing anti-government, anti-democratic propaganda at Americans, poisoning our system with lies and using the free public airwaves to do so while making huge profits. I don't appreciate being agitated, annoyed, and bummed out as part of the service I'm paying for. Except for masochists, why would anyone pay for that? Therefore, usually I either complain and/or avoid those businesses and medical practitioners disrespectful and clueless enough to have Fox airing in their places of business. Nevertheless, I really wanted to try Kriner's breakfasts so I went anyway. Forewarned by the reviews about right-wing Faux News playing during meals, it didn't bother me because I ignored it and was busy yacking with our guests. The photos on the walls I found a little interesting and some of them amusing. As for the breakfasts, I don't know what other Yelpers are raving about. Our four breakfasts were fine, but in no way exceptional - just plain old diner breakfasts. No big whoop. Maybe some of those wow! reviews are really from supportive friends/members of the Kriner's personal community - people with flags and fish on their vehicles to signal fellow members and warn the rest of us, otherwise, I don't get it. There are other diners in the city with as good as or much better breakfast fare. Since there is better food to be had elsewhere, with no right-wing politics on the side, I won't bother going back to Kriner's Diner.

The food is good old fashion comfort. Portions are enough to split on every dish. Andy's Awesome is the best burger in Alaska, hands down. Don't believe me? Try one. The cinnamon rolls are decadent and a meal into themselves. Biscuits and gravy is one of the best in town. The pancakes are fluffy and sweet and Kriner sized. One is a meal. Come hungry, leave a happy loyal customer.

Good ole comfort food. Try the CBLT, I did!! and was not disappointed. My lunch companion got a french dip type of sandwich and was equally pleased. Nice place, nice atmosphere. I hate open seating. Oh, and accessing this place is not easy. If you are coming from downtown Anch you will be fine, but any other direction is difficult.

Went here for the first time last week. Had an Andy's burger with the krinkle cut fries. Absolutely AWESOME. If you like hot, fresh, flavorful food, GO TO KRINERS. Seriously go get a burger you'll love it.

I am a big fan of Kriner's Burgers & Pies so I decided to finally try the Diner out. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and absolutely love the format of menu especially with the items named after family members and the back stories. The service was not fantastic but for sure was not poor, they have Diet Mountain Dew which in my book is a huge plus.....but it was 2.99 for a soda, and yes you get refills but IMHO that is seriously overpriced. As for the food....the portions are insanely huge which I suppose is nothing to complain about but the prices were quite high to support the massive quantities. If you want a burger or chicken sandwich stick to the Burgers & Pies joint but if you want a huge plate of decent grub this might be right up your alley.

First time and likely last time my family and I visit this place for lunch. Not that it was bad, the service was actually fine but you can find better quality food at a lower price elsewhere. There was nothing awesome about the much talked about Andy's Awesome Burger. The beef patty was generous in size but lacked any flavor. The jalapeno cheese sauce was not at all spicy and the BBQ sauce lacked zest. Sadly the crinkle cut fries tasted like they were salvaged from a grade school cafeteria. The mac and cheese from the kid's menu was no better than the average box of macaroni and cheese you make at home; $6 what a joke. The breakfast menu looked good and the fresh pies in the pie case looked great so maybe, just maybe we'll be back to check this place out again.

This past week, a friend who was in from out of town and I struggled to think of somewhere decent to find pancakes in the afternoon. Ruling out the obvious Denny's, IHOPs, and Village Inns, we settled on Kriner's. I first ate at Kriner's in January of 2012, after moving back up to Alaska from Washington. Though the food that I ate was cooked well and served nicely, I simply found everything to be lacking in flavor. My impression of Kriner's was that a little salt and pepper could do wonders for their dishes. My friend and I walked in and were informed that it was open seating, so we took a booth in the corner of the restaurant. After sitting down, my companion looked up and realized that we were apparently sitting in the Kriner corner. For the rest of our meal, our shoulders were stared over by photos of the Kriner family. It certainly wasn't the creepiest thing I could think of to have staring me down during my meal, but it certainly gave a weird vibe. We received our newspaper/menus and drinks, and pored over them, deciding what we wanted. The waitstaff certainly sensed our need to explore the finer details of the menu, as it took them a good 20 minutes to get back to us for our order, in an otherwise empty dining room. But that was fine, it gave my friend and I ample opportunity to give each other shifty glances over the sheer, stupid amount of "God" text on the menu. Nothing like a healthy helping of someone else's religion to accompany your meal! My friend ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, and I had the country skillet. Though he was satisfied by his sandwich, I once again found Kriner's food to be fairly bland, and desperately needing of just simple salt and pepper. However, the hashbrowns were cooked well, the eggs were light and fluffy, and the pancake I ordered on the side was delicious and moist. As before, excellent preparation, but a bit lacking in the flavor department. I think the next time I decide I want pancakes in the afternoon, I'll try to get it in gear a bit earlier and make it to Snow City Cafe before they close. Kriner's, no thank you.

Heard Kriners had the best burgers in Anchorage...they didn't live up to the hype but Andy's Awesome Burger was pretty darn good. If you don't like a greasy burger don't come here. Portions are huge and the chili cheese fries are worth a few extra bucks. No evidence of the zealots on Saturday afternoon ...thankfully.

Great breakfasts & lunch. My only complaint is that I always eat to much. The staff is very friendly & accommodating! I had the BBQ brisket sandwich & it was delish! It was the daily special! HB had a turkey sandwich made from a freshly roasted turkey. Breakfast is also excellent. This place is a do!!

We were in Alaska for the last dinner before going back to California. This was the best meal we had all week. This place is a real find. It's very clean, the staff is welcoming, and the food was absolutely delicious. It was hard not ordering one of the breakfasts that are served all day, but I had the Mom's Special Turkey Dinner, which was a huge portion of Turkey, Dressing, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Corn and Cranberry Sauce. My husband got one of the burgers with fries. Both of us were very happy with our selections. The only problem was that I couldn't take a doggie bag on the plane, and I was too full to try their homemade pies. If you are wanting comfort food, this is the place to come.

It's a diner and they serve diner food, so don't expect anything too creative. What they do offer, they do well. The place was busy which is usually a good sign for a Tuesday lunch. Based on the other reviews here, I had to Andy's Awesome Burger, and it was in fact, awesome! I hate myself a little afterwords for eating the whole thing, but man was it tastey. A homemade bun (which was key to holding it together), well cooked burger, bacon, BBQ sauce, a blend of cream cheese, jalapenos, and cheddar cheese all combine to create a greasy gutbomb of perfect-ness.

Okay, I guess I'm the differing opinion here. And given that I'm neither a local nor a staunch conservative, some of you reading this may very well be happy that I've already shipped my you-know-what back to LA LA land. Now, I'm all for kitsch. The term "tchotchkes" is amongst my favorite takeaways from growing up in a semi-Yiddish speaking household. So when my friend said that Kriner's was all about old-school Americana, I was game. Unfortunately, there's too much effort put on being over-the-top on the Americana side and not much else. We waited about 15 minutes for our table for a late breakfast. There's not a real "front" or "back" to the place, so we were semi hunched over others' tables but there was some bench seating. While waiting to be seated, I perused the menu and viewed the place. Now this is no '50s diner. In fact, it was just founded in 2010. So while the paper looks old and there's some of that old school feel, there's no actual old school. Which is totally fine and all. Not so fine is that for some reason they carpeted the whole place. Given the debris under the table next to me (spilled fries, paper, etc), it seems like carpeting is amongst the worst choices for a restaurant - let alone a newer greasy spoon. And yes - haha on the American fries and American toast (Why couldn't it be Freedom Fries? Je ne c'est pas.) I opted to get eggs (over easy) and a hot cake instead. The egg was on the greasy side and the hot cake was overly drenched in butter. Maybe it's because we had just come from the state fair the day before, having eaten nothing but fried foods, but it was far too heavy for breakfast. I think we all took naps after the meal - and no, none of us attempted the big burger. Service was slow - I don't know who my server was - I think it was a mix of people, which is strange for a diner type setting. I guess I just don't "get" the place, but given some of the other delicious breakfasts that I tried while in Anchorage, this isn't on my list of places to return to when I plot my next visit to the Last Frontier.

We have friends who rave about this place, and since we drive by it almost everyday we figured we should give it a try. However, If you are like us, let me just tell you to skip it. The food was terribly bland and very overpriced. Yes, the portions are huge, but tasteless. I am quite sure my hash browns were of the pre-frozen variety and the eggs weren't real eggs. Bag eggs maybe? Do they spell it with a 'z' then - eggz? Toast was not buttered (it's a diner right?) and we had to ask for water. $30 for 2 of us - no thank you. We won't be back.

Great waffles on the weekend and Diet Mt Dew on tap- my fave breakfast place. The bacon is really good, too, thick sliced and slightly crispy.

Wow, people are ruthless. Common sense says this is a seat yourself place. This is my kid's favorite diner, and I have no problems obliging them. My favorite is the turkey sandwich, it's like an after Thanksgiving turkey sandwich but better. Their potato salad is great and flavorful unlike so many other places, and portion sizes are always huge.

Grease Republicans and God I arrived at Kriner's Diner expecting a large crowd and maybe a statue of Sarah Palin. Prior reviews refer to a packed house of conservative zealots and religious extremist boasting of planned government take downs and fantasy impeachments of Obama more oft than not. Truthfully, I was please that I would not have to dine in a sea of Conservative humanity. Frankly that shoot from the hip "stand your ground" crowd frightens me. I digress... I was greeted promptly and cheerfully by a waiter stating "It's seat yourself"! I found a booth next to the pie display; I had been warned to stay out of the family corner from previous reviews. My server immediately handed me a newspaper. Actually it was a menu; it seemed my look of confusion was amusing to him. After a brief perusal of the tabloid slash menu I settled on the daily Special a Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich and side of Potato Salad. I expected a 10-15 minute wait for my Special. Astonishingly it was exactly 4 minutes and my food was served! That was a little disappointing considering freshly prepared homemade food is what Kriners claims to be. Sadly the disappointments did not stop there. The bun was smashed together and the bacon clearly sat under a heat lamp past its edible life. But even more disappointing the chicken fried steak was so greasy the bun actually liquefied on my plate. The lone bright spot in the pool of grease was the potato salad. Truly a country style salad with the skins left in; the sort of potato salad my great grandmother made weekly. The food aside, the front of house staff was friendly and certainly is a credit to the establishment. It is not their fault the cooks are sub par. The prices are certainly in line with the surrounding competition. Also I did not see any of the political and religious force feeding I was expecting. Dang it! I was looking forward to that. Sadly, I will not return to Kriner's Diner as the food was a calamity. Truthfully I was looking forward to a "old school diner" milkshake and pie experience. Alas I just couldn't bring myself to try anything else with all that grease boiling in my stomach. My recommendation is; stay away.

Quality breakfasts in Anchorage are hard to find. This newcomer to the scene has hit a slam dunk! Ihop and Gwennies beware, once word gets out this place will be packed. Open for breakfast, lunch & dinner, fair prices & great tasting food. It's well worth your time to seek this place out. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the growing pains associated with setting a new restaurant. I'm sure it will soon be 5 stars. One neat item is the 'family burger' for $39.99. If you can finish this #2 burger plus fries in 45 minutes it's FREE, you'll also get your picture added to their hall of fame and get a free t-shirt.

The server may take forever coming over just to give you your menu .. You might have to wait 20 mins just to get your drinks.. But trust me when you try the ANDYS AWESOME BURGER it will all be worth it!!! It was by far one of the best burgers I've ever had spicy, lots of cheese, onion rings !! Mmmmmmm Amazing! Enjoy

Kriner's Diner has unseated everybody else in the race for the best hearty breakfast in town. Their other food is outstanding and the services is always great, but everytime I'm in there I want to eat breakfast!

If one thing to note about this business is that they descend from Sal's Diner in Soldotna, I'm not entirely sure if that is something one should be proud of. I'm not really impressed with a place that looks like the majority of its stuff comes from a freezer bag, generic plain-Jane products (of which you can see stacked in the window of the kitchen; I'm sure the bread is the $2 a loaf, cheapy stuff from the Hostess shop), or maybe a can. I know this isn't fancy dining, where others places actually have a chef or a trained cook, but I think I'm just grossed out at the thought of a place selling mostly pre-formed or pre-made foodstuffs at restaurant prices. I also want to note that recently on their Facebook page, they mentioned how they're switching to new steak fries, but they still have "about 5 weeks of crinkle cuts to use up though." Uhh, that's pretty gross. I don't think I'd want to be on the receiving end of the last bits of freezer-burned fries. A restaurant that isn't cheap, and has pride in their product, wouldn't dream of holding something like that in their freezer for over a month. I've worked in restaurants. There is a system to cycling out dated stuff. I'm presuming such a thing is not present here. The one time I did go, I was underwhelmed with the service and the food. The layout is also weird; there wasn't anyone to tell you what to do. You stand around, awkwardly, wondering if you have to hover around a table to wait for it to be freed and jump in it before someone else does, or if it's a "please wait to be seated" kind of place. The server was scatterbrained, inattentive, and not very friendly. I had looked at their updated FB page to see what they had before we went, and when I ordered it, they didn't carry it anymore. The coffee was swill, but I'm supposing I shouldn't hold my hopes up high for a place like this. My companion's meal looked like something that looked identical to the corned hash you'd get from the big can at Costco. It was unimpressive, and actually pretty gross looking. Also, I don't like a side of radical politics (from EITHER side of the spectrum) with a meal. Who the hell wants to get a meal with a bunch of political propaganda and patronizing, snotty attitudes crammed down their throat? Drinking their coffee was bad enough! Too long; didn't read: Crap food that you can make cheaper at home; Sal's Diner lineage is not a good thing; political BS is offered on the side for free.

We went on a weekday morning about 10. The place was almost empty but it took about 15 minutes to place our order! We almost left but stayed and regret it. I love chicken fried steak and the waitress said theirs was really good so I ordered it. It was a thick slab of fat. My wife's eggs were rubber and the bacon was as cold as the toast. Don't waste your time or money.

Listen up, Anchorage-ites: Kriner's is what we like to call in my household, "Da Bomb." Now, I haven't been there a buttload of times and I haven't had their breakfast. Perhaps, one day. There's really only one reason needed to go to Kriner's and that's for the Andy's Awesome Burger. I am a burger lover. I'm a white-bread American and I loves me some burger. I'm always looking out for the next one to top the last one. Currently, Andy's Awesome Burger is wearing the king's crown as the best of Anchorage. Yes, that is correct. No, I don't want to hear about the burger you think is better when you haven't even tried this one. There's a few spots I haven't hit in Anchorage yet, that talk mad smack about having "the best" burger, but until I visit and take the Pepsi challenge, Andy's Awesome Burger takes the taco (pun...intended?). Okay, so let's talk about this mutha: Perfectly cooked burger with crispy french onions, barbecue sauce, bacon, and holy-freakin-awesome, Batman...clumpy, melted, oozing jalapeno cheese that slides off the burger in a beautiful symphony of gooey burger goodness. It truly "makes" the burger and is the signature ingredient that puts the "awe" in awesome for this here burger. If you come for lunch and haven't had this thing, then you don't need to even look at the menu. Ask for the awesome burger and wait for greatness. My wife has had two of the other burgers, both of which I sampled and were made to perfection. I still preferred Andy's, but that doesn't disqualify the others as not measuring up. They do. I get the onion rings, which taste like good onion rings. Nothing special, just good ol' onion rings. They have those mega-tall drink cups, which is pretty awesome when you don't feel like playing the "attention-getting" game every time your straw makes that "empty-cup" sucking sound. Don't show up if you are looking for a "light" meal. Take your ass to New Sagaya or something. You come here for chow. That goes in your belly. So, y'know, show up with some room. Because you're an idiot if you don't get dessert. The chocolate cream pie is like something they'd serve while waiting in line to get into heaven. The others look just as great. Mosey on up and take a look at the pie fridge and drool at the opportunity. The massive cinnamon rolls look amazing, but I'm saving up to try one. You gotta take greatness in waves. The interior is clean and nice, much nicer than a "typical" diner. This struck me right away and made me feel at ease and took away my worries of witnessing a fight break out or getting shanked in the bathroom. Servers are nice and friendly, food is prompt, and all is well in the world. I recommend this place to all my friends...including you, dear reader. This place rocks like Motley Crue when they were singing Girls, Girls, Girls. Don't hesitate to visit and soak up some greasy spoon that's got some heart and soul in the menu.

This place gives me good vibes. I feel like the owners are truly passionate about their business and the community. I think it's awesome that they have daily specials and it's posted on FB the night before. I don't know about you, but I want to eat at a place where the owners are passionate about food! Every time I've been here the food has been spot on. I had the awesome burger the last time I was there and holy smokes, that was the best burger I've ever had. A member of the party I was with ordered the open face turkey sandwhich, and I was jealous looking at it, even though I had that delicious burger! Haha... Great place that I hope will be around for many years.

I love this place. It is consistently good. I have tried many different items on the menu (breakfast and lunch) and have never been disappointed. It is very clean, and the service is friendly and efficient. Kriner's is becoming a regular spot for me!

  • Amanda C.

Honestly, go for the menu. It's actually modeled after a newspaper, featuring many "interesting" articles and quotes about politics. Graciously, the menu states that all opinions are welcome, but let's just say I have a few hundred friends in San Francisco that might walk out before getting to the menu options. If Obama goes to Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC for street cred, then this is where Sarah Palin goes to preach to the choir. As for the food... it's good, pretty standard diner fare. The pancakes are nice and crispy and the other breakfast items are creative and gut-busting. I've only been for breakfast, but I hear all menu items are good (from my boyfriend, who loves diner food). If you can keep your political opinions at bay, or if you too doubt Obama's citizenship, you will feel right at home. Very nice folks. You betch'ya.

Finally got to check out Kriner's Diner and see what everybody and their brother has been talking about. I was certainly not disappointed. My husband and I arrived for lunch and the place was packed, but lucky for us a table just opened up and we were seated right away. We were given the menu, which is a cute newspaper-like menu with factoids about Alaska and quotes from important personages that strike the owners' fancy. The server was helpful in providing recommendations. I also had a lot of recommendations from friends and coworkers who are already practically regulars. We received our order quickly. I ordered the Alaskan burger and the husband had the open-faced turkey sandwich. Delicious! The entire place just evokes mom-style home cookin'. Good food, good service and good prices. Kriner's is well worth seeking out for a tasty meal that will keep you coming back for more!

Awesome choice! The owner is the son of the founder of the original Sal's in Soldotna, and this place has a great selection for breakfast, lunch & dinner. My husband had Andy's Awesome burger with fries, and I had the daily special, which was grilled chicken breast, chipotle sause, and avocado. Fantastic flavors, and very filling. The service is good, food comes out quickly, and the restaurant clean. While we were sitting at our table, we got a glimpse of the breakfast items (all day breakfast) folks had ordered. Large, pancakes, and chicken fried steak-man oh man, it's nice to have another great breakfast choice.

I've heard of Kriner's Diner and wanted to go there for a long time. The problem was the location, I was always going in the wrong direction when I saw it while visiting Anchorage. Finally I went to dinner there, with a friend, this past May. This was before I had heard of Yelp or I would have put this on here much sooner. The diner itself was hard to get to but well worth it. The photos were a nice diversion while waiting for a seat, as was the menu. The wall art was just right for an Alaskan diner. Anyway, I ordered the special (cheeseburger with an egg and jalapeños). It came with huge onion rings. We should have shared a meal as the portions were huge. The prices were just right for my wallet. My young friend ordered the reuben and it was awesome! We each shared a bit of the other. We were too stuffed to eat dessert after that dinner. We ordered awesome desserts to go but we did sneak one bite each before leaving. After this meal, I couldn't wait to try a breakfast. My husband and I returned to Kriner's for breakfast with friends on June 14th. Again, we were not disappointed. The guys ate steaks but we ladies let common sense prevail and we shared the wonderful biscuits and gravy. So many people have commented that the food at Kriner's is bland. I am happy to say that their food tastes like food and NOT salt. I am delighted that they have opened a second diner!

Good portions at breakfast. Loved the bacon but the hash browns from a box were a disappointment. Would love to see some home made hash browns. The place seemed over staffed and one particular employee was constantly standing around singing badly and causing a distraction by milling about behind the counter and crowding the other workers space. I like this place and will be back.

I got the vibe from this place it's a "locals" only diner (which is fine I was born and bred in this city). There is no one to greet you when you come in, if your new you stand there waiting until someone tells you seat yourself. Hey Kriner, ever think of putting up a sign that says "seat your self"... that's a hint to you free of charge. I read a couple reviews about the bland food here, I would call that accurate. It's decent food but nothing out of this world . The wait staff and bussers were polite and attentive.

Nice place. Good burgers. The Mom's dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, and veggies was also very good. The place is a little small, and is kept very clean. The folks running the place are very friendly. If your overtly political, there's lots of Fox News and other "conservative" decor (just in case you're easily offended).

Fabulous breakfast on a busy Saturday morning. The homemade corned beef has was five star! Wait staff was cheerful and atmosphere fun! We will be back!

Great portion sizes for the value, I almost always have leftovers. My husband enjoys the Hollenback (sp?) burger and I'm always trying something different. I love the newspaper menu. Everyone is nice.

Enjoy

I love this place. It is consistently good. I have tried many different items on the menu (breakfast and lunch) and have never been disappointed. It is very clean, and the service is friendly and efficient. Kriner's is becoming a regular spot for me!

EVER
