Stopped here on a whim (we were heading to Denny's) and I'm glad we did! Very welcoming staff. Clean restaurant. Prices cheaper than IHOP (most breakfast entrees around $7). Menu includes lots of Polynesian specialties in addition to traditional American breakfast. Our table had breakfast fried rice, chicken fried steak, pancakes and a kids breakfast ($4!). The chicken fried steak and gravy appeared and tasted like homemade (don't get that at IHOP). Portions were plentiful. We will be back!

First things first. Kava has a very warm welcoming. Secondly, our waitress took 20 orders from our group without writing a single note down and delivered our plates all without asking who ordered what. Thirdly, the food is top notch and matches their flawless service. Thoroughly impressed with this pancake house.

First time visiting Kavas today and was very impressed. The service was a little slow due to the amount of people dinning but it was in no way bad service. I had the Sumo Moco and highly recommend it, be prepared take a lot home though because it is huge! I am definitely going to be making more trips! 5 stars all the way. It's nice to see people lining up waiting to be seated, means you have found a good spot in my book.

Enjoyed my first meal here today after hearing about it from a few friends (and reading reviews, of course). I have to say... for a Sunday morning, the service could not have been better. We were greeted and seated immediately with water, the waitress was by within minutes asking if we were ready or needed drinks then came back shortly after (when we were, in fact, ready) and took our orders. I got the Irish Omelet with egg whites and my friend got the Veggie Scramble with peanut butter whipped cream on her pancakes. Both were VERY generous portions and had fresh vegetables in them. You HAVE to get something with the PB whipped cream, it was everything we'd heard and 10x more. SO heavenly! And the pancakes were the yummiest I've had in Anchorage. Throughout our eating we were checked on several times and our water never got below half full... This place is TOP NOTCH and the service was warm, friendly, and made us feel right at home! Definitely going back with my husband soon!

Don't judge this book by its cover! Kava's has a very wide range of foods, but don't be scared to try anything because it's probably going to be good! The service needs a little work, but the food is really quite good. My husband LOVED his oxtail soup and I really liked my breakfast platter. We have only been once, but definitely will go back!

I've heard good things, so I wonder if my experience is unique. I ordered a BLT and fries. The fries were great. The BLT? Well, it was a typical Alaskan tomato, watery and pinkish. The leaf of lettuce as fresh and crispy. The wheat toast was tasteless. The bacon, well, the bacon may have been bacon. It was better described as a carbonized fatty meat by-product. Very carbonized. Let's just say it was carbon in a bacon shape.

My husband and I had been looking for a new local breakfast place for a year or so, and I think we may have finally found it in Kava's. On our first visit, we both had skillets - he had the steak skillet and I had the Cajun skillet. I really enjoyed the fact that both skillets came with the toppings presented on a bed of seasoned home fries vs. plain hash browns. In my opinion, it really added depth to the other flavors in the skillet. I have no idea how they prepare the home fries, but they are crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and seasoned nearly like curly fries. It worked really well with my Cajun skillet's spicy sausage and peppers. My husband said it was great with his steak as well. The steak was large enough to cover most of his generously portioned skillet and was cooked just the way he'd asked for it. Our own food and all the dishes we saw being carried out of the kitchen were huge portions. We are not small eaters, but neither of us could come close to finishing our skillets. We've been back twice since then, and I just keep getting more impressed. The staff are great - many people at the restaurant are clearly regulars, and the owner is usually in and out of the kitchen chatting people up and making sure they're enjoying their meals. We've ordered different menu items every time, and every single thing we've had has been delicious (as well as reasonably priced). I'm happy to see how full the parking lot is when we visit, because I really want this place to stick around!

It's nothing special, but there isn't any other competition on this side of town so it's making a killing. I came in with a couple of other people and were sat within 15 minutes. We ordered and it was a good hour for 1 burger and fries, 2 bowls of fruit, and a side of hashbrowns. It was busy, but not that busy. I don't think the kitchen can keep up so if you come be prepared to enjoy conversation for a long time. Someone was eating a particularly tasty looking Loco Moco, so I may be inclined to come again and try that.

We came here on Sunday right around noon and sat down within 5 minutes. The service is quick and friendly and the food is CRAZY GOOD!! Pr the yelp recommendations we got the island fried rice and my husband got the kava melt. The fried rice comes with pancakes too, or other bread of your choice. I got it with eggs over medium and it was sooooo good! I didn't use any condiments or hot sauce. The rice was perfectly seasoned with just enough garlic and some cabbage pieces to lighten it up. There's also some scrambled egg type and a lot of ham, along with the 2 slices of ham!! It was enough for 2 huge meals, but I'm sure you could stretch it further if you wanted. The kava melt was also really good, but much heavier! He got grits with their strawberry sauce and that was super delish! I was torn between syrup and their sauce. We will definitely be back!

My husband said it was one of the best Chicken Fried Steak Breakfasts in town! Now that's a compliment My kids ordered the burgers and while they were large they were dry and dull. I'll never understand why people can't make a juicy flavorful burger, it's not that hard. I love that this restaurant is run by Hawaiians and some traditional Hawaiian favorites! Fantastic option for breakfast! We were on our way out for a hike and decided to try something new. Upon walking in we were immediately welcomed. I ordered a coffee with cream, they have flavored ones! Yay! So many options for food. I went with the California omelet. It had bacon, avocado, spinach & Swiss cheese. Yummy! I couldn't finish it. Sides include hash Browns, grits or fruit and toast or pancakes. I went with the fruit and sourdough toast. Fruit was great, toast was very buttered so if you don't like that you may want to order dry. My partner had an omelet as well, Irish I think. Ate the whole thing and said this may be the new favorite breakfast place. I tried a few bites of the pancake... Yum! So light and fluffy! I I have to say I am a huge fan of Snow City but this place gives it a run for its money. Great food, friendly service and reasonable prices.

Stopped in here for a late breakfast over the weekend, I wasn't overly impressed. The food was unremarkable. They use YES for scrambled eggs (yellow egglike substance), doesn't anyone use real eggs anymore? The chicken fried steak was bland along with the gravy. I had to put salt and pepper on everything but the pancakes, which I do not normally do. The pancakes were good and house potatoes weren't bad. Coffee tasted like your standard bulk breakfast coffee. We had 2 different people serving our table, one was polite and friendly, the other not so much. We had coffee cups and creamer slammed onto the table. In the small amount of time we've been in Anchorage there are several places we would return to, this isn't one of them. We've had better chicken fried steak and better service elsewhere. The only thing this place has going for them are their prices, which are reasonable for the amount of food you get. But with that in mind, they're skipping on quality for quantity here.

I really like the ono waffle over here, It taste really pretty good. It was right by the highway and a mall. The food were around $5-$20 that was pretty pricey I have no problems about the place it was perfect and quick service when I saw so many review I thought it was going to be crowed but it was not. I go out on breakfast only on Monday, I won't be here for a while I come back sometimes.

Trying their new opening. Decent menu options for an authentic family feel of food variety. Very Hawaiian. I had the breakfast spam fries rice which was pretty tasty! My boyfriend and I went in for breakfast on a Sunday, holiday weekend, so we anticipated it would be busy. What we didn't plan on was the treatment in which we received. Rude would be an understatement, but the only other words I can think of are rather vulgar. The "hostess" basically yelled at us from across the room to follow her, which at first we didn't even know she was talking to us, then upon arriving at our table she threw, I'm not exaggerating, threw our menus on the table and walked off after rolling her eyes in a huff. Didn't bother to tell us who our server was or even wait for us to get to the table. Now our server was nice. She was clearly overworked being only one of two servers that I saw. Plenty of staff running around however not a whole lot of service. The food was mediocre and just be clear that when you order a cup of coffee that's about what you get without doing a dance when your cup is empty. Now when it comes to the checkout we walked our receipt to the counter, the girl behind the counter was neither our "hostess" or server. She said NOTHING to me. I mean not a word. My card was laying on top of our receipt so she swiped it, tossed it on the counter, put the slips up and walked off. Kinda hard to sign with no pen so my boyfriend walked behind the desk and searched while I asked other customers. The staff, minus our waitress, were utterly rude and need to figure out where the handle to the stick is... When they find it I'll be happy to assist in the removal, if you catch my drift.

One of many breakfast joints in Anchorage. This one has a polynesian flair to it. Very diverse menu, breakfast served all day. Building looks like an old Pizza Hut, nothing too fancy about this place. Family friendly for sure. Decent food, right near the Carrs, and Northway Mall.

Island Food + Breakfast Food = awesome mix. I've yet to try their lunch/dinner items yet but I know Kava's for more of a breakfast restaurant. You get a lot of food for good prices. Pancakes are good, the Loco Moco is a popular item and the service is friendly. Don't be discouraged by the dainty inner decor for they have hearty, tasty food.

Was not impressed with either the food nor service. I have the French toast which had a funny taste to it and the coffee was not that good. Also had a side of bacon which was good but a little under done. all this for $20.00 which is way over priced. I will not go back there again.

Went to the new location on Muldoon in the former KFC. Ordered the fish and chips with mashed potatoes,broccoli, and a salad. The entire dinner was definitely store bought and not fresh or from scratch. The fish was from Costco and it was very greasy, my sons eggs were severely undercooked and runny. The positive was I did have a bite of pancakes and they were pretty good. The sweet tea tasted funny and I sent it back for a Pepsi, however it took a very long time to get the drink replaced. Which brings me to the service which was slow but I don't blame her she was the only server in the entire restaurant and it was somewhat busy. Overall I would not recommend this place, unless you wanted pancakes. Then go but I think they need to stick to pancakes and breakfast food and they should consider taking some of the dinner items off the menu, especially if it is frozen store bought food and not fresh. There are too many items on the menu and it takes away from what they are specializing on.

Ate breakfast here when it first opened. The service was so-so. It is a Polynesian family breakfast experience. Healthy portions. It is almost impossible to do bad Pancakes. The kids loved them. The restaurant was very busy but the service lacked organization. My husband ordered chicken fried steak and I ordered the "surfer" sandwich. The food was good but barely warm when it came an hour later. Perhaps it was overlooked in the kitchen? The prices are a good value considering the amount of food but it wasn't worth the wait and the lack of service. Might try again in the future maybe it was an off day.

This place is an anomaly in Anchorage. The reason is it's amazing quality of breakfast food, the quantity of food you get (huge portions) and the price of the food. I've been here a year and the price of going out is insane for what you get usually in Anchorage. Now Kava's has broken that issue for me in providing a home cooked breakfast feel for me when I don't have to feel like I'm breaking the bank just to have a nice meal that isn't a fast food chain. I've tried their omelets and been happy, I also really like their Loco Moco dish. It's so simple it works. But I assure you, it's worth a visit. It's nothing special for its decor and sometimes it's busy and it's harder for the servers to get to you. In a way, that's a plus, it means you're in a great spot that's frequented by the locals. Of course that's not fun when you're STARVING LOL. But again, I'm a fan and this place has me as a bonafide customer for however long my time in Anchorage is. Be well.

Enjoyed this place very very much. Food was solid. I got a burger .. it was so so. But the kids all got breakfast and it was EXCELLENT. Service needs to improve!!!! Seems to be family owned and family run. If not it is a close knit group of workers. Because of this, I think they lack professionalism that I would like to see. Too many workers sitting on their a$$ while we had no napkins, no water refills, and waiting for our check for way way way too long. We will be back and hopefully the service gets better. I am in heaven here, finally servings sizes as big as Denali, great service and awesome food. This is my new fave place to eat. When you order a 16 oz. Rib Eye Steak, you get it...cooked to your liking....not some dried out, teeny-tiny flavorless steak. This puts most places to shame. All-You-Can-Eat Kaluha Pig for $12.00 on Thursdays are amazing and Ox-Tail Soup Fridays are divine, my only complaint is that the Ox-Tail Soup can be offered as an All-U-Can-Eat, charging extra, I Will pay it!!! They have DirecTv on HD screens there and have always satisfied me as a customer.

We went for breakfast here and it seemed like it was going to be great! We walked in and only a few tables were taken. As soon as we sat down, a huge rush of people came in. I'm talking to full capacity,with people waiting for tables. Only 3 waitresses were working, so the wait time for food or any kind of service was extremely long. Our order was taken, and drinks(coffee and chocolate milk) were brought, but we were forgotten about for the next 35 minutes. No one came to check on us or refill our drinks. When the waitress brought out our food, she said sorry for the wait,put the plates down,and disappeared. Of course, when we bit into our food EVERYTHING was COLD. Not even Luke warm. When confronted she acted surprised that it was cold even though she knew that our food was sitting out ready to go for at least 10 minutes. Awful experience all together. Shotty service and LOUD atmosphere (like a petting zoo). The food does have potential. If you happen to come here during a non busy time, i'm sure everything will be great, but I felt they weren't prepared for what the restaurant is capable of in Anchorage on a Saturday morning.

My philly steak sandwich was so huge they couldn't even close the take out box without a rubber band. Also, its not easy to turn eggs benedict into a filling meal, but these guys have found a way. After the Hogg Bros Cafe closed down years ago I never thought I would find another breakfast joint I would like as much. And I never will. But Kavas is as close as it gets, so recognize.

Interesting selection of Polynesian themed breakfast food, including fried rice, in a family run restaurant in what appears to be an old Pizza Hut. Not the cleanest place or one with the fastest service, but the food was tasty and the portions are huge. We went here after middle daughter talked it up after visiting during her National Geographic Student Expedition. One leaves with the feeling that eating here on a regular basis would quickly add to one's waistline.

To be honest I was tempted to give this place a bad review, so I could have it all to my self! Very good food good prices and good portions. The staff was nice but they were very short handed on July 4th, only 2 waiters for the whole restaurant and it was packed. Not sure if this is common practice here or they were unsure of the volume of people for 4th of July. Will return!

Considering I created the business on here, I'm kind of shocked that I didn't post a review! The owner came to my job to buy some things to get ready for their grand opening and told me what type of restaurant it was and that I should stop by, and also to spread the word amongst my coworkers. I came a few days after opening and got a loco moco and it was so delicious. I have a thing for rice and it was great to know that it was perfectly cooked. It came with pancakes...now, I'm not too keen on sweet things, so I stay away from most breakfast items, including waffles and muffins. The pancakes were one of the best I've ever had. Fluffy with texture...I don't know how else to describe it! The next time I went there I ordered the breakfast fried rice (island style fried rice with two eggs any style, spam and it comes with pancakes). When I came to pick my order up, I noticed how many people were there. Almost full...word of mouth does wonders. Anyways my order was of course great. I'm glad to support local business, and even more glad to do it for such wonderful people. The owner and his wife are so nice! Since I don't work far from there, I will be a regular.

Stopped in today for breakfast before heading out to Bear Paw. Son had the Kava's Pancake combo and I had the Ono Ono Waffle. Both were solid entrees. The waffle was good--made with peanut butter, chocolate chips, and bananas. His pancakes were, well, A-OK--much like other restaurants. Yes, it's an old Pizza Hut that's been reborn multiple times and, yes, the service was adequate (not bad, but not spectacular). I think what will set this place apart are the Polynesian options--loco moco, island fried rice, etc.--and the prices. Decent for some good portions. A good option if you're in the area, but don't know that I would take the trek across town for it.

Stopped here on a whim (we were heading to Denny's) and I'm glad we did! Very welcoming staff. Clean restaurant. Prices cheaper than IHOP (most breakfast entrees around $7). Menu includes lots of Polynesian specialties in addition to traditional American breakfast. Our table had breakfast fried rice, chicken fried steak, pancakes and a kids breakfast ($4!). The chicken fried steak and gravy appeared and tasted like homemade (don't get that at IHOP). Portions were plentiful. We will be back!

First things first. Kava has a very warm welcoming. Secondly, our waitress took 20 orders from our group without writing a single note down and delivered our plates all without asking who ordered what. First time visiting Kavas today and was very impressed. The service was a little slow due to the amount of people dinning but it was in no way bad service. I had the Sumo Moco and highly recommend it, be prepared take a lot home though because it is huge! I am definitely going to be making more trips! 5 stars all the way. It's nice to see people lining up waiting to be seated, means you have found a good spot in my book.

Enjoyed my first meal here today after hearing about it from a few friends (and reading reviews, of course). I have to say... for a Sunday morning, the service could not have been better. We were greeted and seated immediately with water, the waitress was by within minutes asking if we were ready or needed drinks then came back shortly after (when we were, in fact, ready) and took our orders. I got the Irish Omelet with egg whites and my friend got the Veggie Scramble with peanut butter whipped cream on her pancakes. Both were VERY generous portions and had fresh vegetables in them. You HAVE to get something with the PB whipped cream, it was everything we'd heard and 10x more. SO heavenly! And the pancakes were the yummiest I've had in Anchorage. Throughout our eating we were checked on several times and our water never got below half full... This place is TOP NOTCH and the service was warm, friendly, and made us feel right at home! Definitely going back with my husband soon!

My husband and I had been looking for a new local breakfast place for a year or so, and I think we may have finally found it in Kava's. On our first visit, we both had skillets - he had the steak skillet and I had the Cajun skillet. I really enjoyed the fact that both skillets came with the toppings presented on a bed of seasoned home fries vs. plain hash browns. In my opinion, it really added depth to the other flavors in the skillet. I have no idea how they prepare the home fries, but they are crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and seasoned nearly like curly fries. It worked really well with my Cajun skillet's spicy sausage and peppers. My husband said it was great with his steak as well. The steak was large enough to cover most of his generously portioned skillet and was cooked just the way he'd asked for it. Our own food and all the dishes we saw being carried out of the kitchen were huge portions. We are not small eaters, but neither of us could come close to finishing our skillets. We've been back twice since then, and I just keep getting more impressed. The staff are great - many people at the restaurant are clearly regulars, and the owner is usually in and out of the kitchen chatting people up and making sure they're enjoying their meals. We've ordered different menu items every time, and every single thing we've had has been delicious (as well as reasonably priced). I'm happy to see how full the parking lot is when we visit, because I really want this place to stick around!

Considering I created the business on here, I'm kind of shocked that I didn't post a review! The owner came to my job to buy some things to get ready for their grand opening and told me what type of restaurant it was and that I should stop by, and also to spread the word amongst my coworkers. I came a few days after opening and got a loco moco and it was so delicious. I have a thing for rice and it was great to know that it was perfectly cooked. It came with pancakes...now, I'm not too keen on sweet things, so I stay away from most breakfast items, including waffles and muffins. The pancakes were one of the best I've ever had. Fluffy with texture...I don't know how else to describe it! The next time I went there I ordered the breakfast fried rice (island style fried rice with two eggs any style, spam and it comes with pancakes). When I came to pick my order up, I noticed how many people were there. Almost full...word of mouth does wonders. Anyways my order was of course great. I'm glad to support local business, and even more glad to do it for such wonderful people. The owner and his wife are so nice! Since I don't work far from there, I will be a regular.

Stopped in today for breakfast before heading out to Bear Paw. Son had the Kava's Pancake combo and I had the Ono Ono Waffle. Both were solid entrees. The waffle was good--made with peanut butter, chocolate chips, and bananas. His pancakes were, well, A-OK--much like other restaurants. Yes, it's an old Pizza Hut that's been reborn multiple times and, yes, the service was adequate (not bad, but not spectacular). I think what will set this place apart are the Polynesian options--loco moco, island fried rice, etc.--and the prices. Decent for some good portions. A good option if you're in the area, but don't know that I would take the trek across town for it.

I ran the Anchorage marathon this past weekend, and I severely re-injured my heel. I finished way slower than I expected, and felt miserable. I had to dart out of my hotel quickly, having just enough time to shower and pack up, and suddenly, I was out on the street, weary, beaten and in need of breakfast. There were plenty of places around, but as I flipped through yelp, all I wanted was pancakes. It stuck in my head. "Pancakes will make things better", I repeated to myself. I wasn't sure if I said it out loud or it was just my inner monologue. Either way, it kept being my one driving thought. The closest place? Kava's...Fortunately, the bus let off right near there, because I was not walking 2 miles more. (In retrospect, I *totally* would have.) I got seated and coffee'd immediately, and ordered a stack of Hawaiian pancakes with a side of hash browns and a glass of OJ. That's a big breakfast for me, and I needed it. The hash browns were very bland, and nothing special, but the pancakes...the pancakes...oh, the pancakes. I finished them fast, but it felt like forever. I wished I could pause the moment and crawl in between the pancakes and nap in them, spooning with and nibbling on the chunks of pineapple and banana. I would make whipped cream angels and never leave. I admit, this rating would probably have been a 4 on any other day. In fact, I never got a refill on my coffee, which would be a cardinal sin elsewhere. But, the circumstances and the life providing/saving pancakes that accompanied them made this a great experience for me.

Tried this place a year ago. It was amazing!!! Now-a-days....not so good. I recently found out Kava's actually sold this Penland Pkwy location and the new owners were suppose to change the name but haven't yet. Its a shame I hope they don't end up hurting the real Kava's on Muldoon.

My Omlette was great and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her melt. I love the 808 vibe too. Too many great looking menu items and not enough room in my stomach.

Smooth and hearty reindeer sausage, eggs cooked to my taste (soft scrambled, which is hard to get cooks to actually do right) and delicious Hawaiian pancakes with coconut, pineapple, macadamia nuts, and whipped cream. Mm-mm! Speaking of cream, my husband thought the grits were so creamy they might be made with cream. I don't live here, so I don't know if I'll ever be back, but I recommend this restaurant to locals and tourists alike.

Seriously, I gave snow city cafe a glowing review. However, now that I've eaten here it's night and day. The food is so much better here. The service is fast and friendly. The portions are big. Now that I've eaten here I'm not sure about what the hype is with snow city. Ultimately Kava's is just better.

You better be hungry when you go here. OMG! The portions are huge! Being a Pacific Islander, Kava's is right up my alley. I got the fried rice which I barely put a dent in. A mound of steamy deliciousness with a couple of slices of fried SPAM. Loved it, but took about 80% of it home with me to enjoy later. Most of the breakfast entrees come with either pancakes or toast. I asked if I could get the "farmer's pancakes" instead which is really a Hawaiian style crepe. Growing up, we called these "lina lina pancakes". Slather with butter, roll into a tube, and enjoy. Very ono! Great island style food! Next time, I'm bringing poi.

This is an American Samoa run restaurant. If you have breakfast at a restaurant here in Anchorage you need to go here. Do not be shy! order the breakfast fried rice or one of the breakfast sandwiches. Samoans are large people, these portions are HUGE! just about everything here is sharable. if the thought of spam n eggs makes u drool, go here for sure! if not, pay em a visit and your life may never be the same again! Wow, I'm surprised this place isn't more talked about in the Anchorage breakfast scene! Describing this place in two words: Hawaiian Diner. It's one of the most unique eateries in Anchorage. I've only been here twice, but both times the food was: - Massively portioned - Massively tasty Portions: they are huge. I have a behemoth of an appetite, and I need a box. Tasty: this place probably has some of the best bacon in town. I'm not sure what exactly about it makes it so good, but the total package really whoops some of the "sad bacon" that seems to be so present in the A-N-C. Also, you can get pancakes as a side with just about anything. I love that. I have loved that since I was just a punk highschool kid going to Village Inn at 3am, drinking coffee, and thinking I was soOOOOoooo kewl. Oh, and if you get the pancakes farm style...they are more like CREPES! They are delicious, I highly recommend them. I've also gotten a "skillet" here (something else I ate as a young Village Inn patron). Skillets are something large swaths of the US do not understand. "Wut.? Is that like, an iron pan?" It's kind of like a breakfast casserole...or perhaps more like a "scramble" laid down a bet of tasty potatoes. Regardless of what a "skillet" technically is, they have them here. They are big. They are delicious. Only thing keeping this place from 4 stars is that the coffee is pretty mediocre. And the service can be a little lackadaisical, even when there aren't many folks in here.

I was bummed about my experience. Someone told me this place was good. I went here this morning (fourth of July breakfast). Our server was friendly. I was a little frustrated with my meal and also when we got the tab. I ordered a breakfast sandwich. I told the waitress what I wanted for my sandwich. It came out with everything I wanted. What was disappointing about my breakfast sandwich was that it was greasy. They cooked my egg whites, spinach and tomatoes together (that was fine) but it had like a dark brown/black greasy residue. Very gross and sad. The hashbrowns were dry. I was bummed and defiantly wished I ordered something different. When we got the tab, my breakfast sandwich was billed a la cart, making it $18! $18 for a breakfast sandwich and my hashbrowns???????? I was charged $5 for the eggs, $3.95 for the bread, $2 for the avocado, $3.95 for the tomatoes and spinach and $3.95 for the hashbrowns. Say what?! I could have easily ordered a breakfast sandwich on their menu for $11 and made TONS of alterations. I thought it would be easy for the server if I just told her what I wanted on it... Apparently that cost me more money. I won't be going back to this place.

It's nothing special, but there isn't any other competition on this side of town so it's making a killing. I came in with a couple of other people and were sat within 15 minutes. We ordered and it was a good hour for 1 burger and fries, 2 bowls of fruit, and a side of hashbrowns. It was busy, but not that busy. I don't think the kitchen can keep up so if you come be prepared to enjoy conversation for a long time. Someone was eating a particularly tasty looking Loco Moco, so I may be inclined to come again and try that.

We came here on Sunday right around noon and sat down within 5 minutes. The service is quick and friendly and the food is CRAZY GOOD!! Pr the yelp recommendations we got the island fried rice and my husband got the kava melt. The fried rice comes with pancakes too, or other bread of your choice. I got it with eggs over medium and it was sooooo good! I didn't use any condiments or hot sauce. The rice was perfectly seasoned with just enough garlic and some cabbage pieces to lighten it up. There's also some scrambled egg type and a lot of ham, along with the 2 slices of ham!! It was enough for 2 huge meals, but I'm sure you could stretch it further if you wanted. The kava melt was also really good, but much heavier! He got grits with their strawberry sauce and that was super delish! I was torn between syrup and their sauce. We will definitely be back!

My husband said it was one of the best Chicken Fried Steak Breakfasts in town! Now that's a compliment My kids ordered the burgers and while they were large they were dry and dull. Fantastic option for breakfast! We were on our way out for a hike and decided to try something new. Upon walking in we were immediately welcomed. I ordered a coffee with cream, they have flavored ones! Yay! So many options for food. I went with the California omelet. It had bacon, avocado, spinach & Swiss cheese. Yummy! I couldn't finish it. Sides include hash Browns, grits or fruit and toast or pancakes. I went with the fruit and sourdough toast. Fruit was great, toast was very buttered so if you don't like that you may want to order dry. My partner had an omelet as well, Irish I think. Ate the whole thing and said this may be the new favorite breakfast place. I tried a few bites of the pancake... Yum! So light and fluffy! I I have to say I am a huge fan of Snow City but this place gives it a run for its money. Great food, friendly service and reasonable prices.

Stopped in here for a late breakfast over the weekend, I wasn't overly impressed. The food was unremarkable. They use YES for scrambled eggs (yellow egglike substance), doesn't anyone use real eggs anymore? The chicken fried steak was bland along with the gravy. I had to put salt and pepper on everything but the pancakes, which I do not normally do. The pancakes were good and house potatoes weren't bad. Coffee tasted like your standard bulk breakfast coffee. We had 2 different people serving our table, one was polite and friendly, the other not so much. We had coffee cups and creamer slammed onto the table. In the small amount of time we've been in Anchorage there are several places we would return to, this isn't one of them. We've had better chicken fried steak and better service elsewhere. The only thing this place has going for them are their prices, which are reasonable for the amount of food you get. But with that in mind, they're skipping on quality for quantity here.

I really like the ono waffle over here, It taste really pretty good. It was right by the highway and a mall. My boyfriend and I went in for breakfast on a Sunday, holiday weekend, so we anticipated it would be busy. What we didn't plan on was the treatment in which we received. Rude would be an understatement, but the only other words I can think of are rather vulgar. The "hostess" basically yelled at us from across the room to follow her, which at first we didn't even know she was talking to us, then upon arriving at our table she threw, I'm not exaggerating, threw our menus on the table and walked off after rolling her eyes in a huff. Didn't bother to tell us who our server was or even wait for us to get to the table. Now our server was nice. She was clearly overworked being only one of two servers that I saw. Plenty of staff running around however not a whole lot of service. The food was mediocre and just be clear that when you order a cup of coffee that's about what you get without doing a dance when your cup is empty. Now when it comes to the checkout we walked our receipt to the counter, the girl behind the counter was neither our "hostess" or server. She said NOTHING to me. I mean not a word. My card was laying on top of our receipt so she swiped it, tossed it on the counter, put the slips up and walked off. Kinda hard to sign with no pen so my boyfriend walked behind the desk and searched while I asked other customers. The staff, minus our waitress, were utterly rude and need to figure out where the handle to the stick is... When they find it I'll be happy to assist in the removal, if you catch my drift.

One of many breakfast joints in Anchorage. This one has a polynesian flair to it. Very diverse menu, breakfast served all day. Building looks like an old Pizza Hut, nothing too fancy about this place. Family friendly for sure. Decent food, right near the Carrs, and Northway Mall.

Was not impressed with either the food nor service. I have the French toast which had a funny taste to it and the coffee was not that good. Also had a side of bacon which was good but a little under done. all this for $20.00 which is way over priced. I will not go back there again.

Went to the new location on Muldoon in the former KFC. Ordered the fish and chips with mashed potatoes,broccoli, and a salad. The entire dinner was definitely store bought and not fresh or from scratch. The fish was from Costco and it was very greasy, my sons eggs were severely undercooked and runny. The positive was I did have a bite of pancakes and they were pretty good. The sweet tea tasted funny and I sent it back for a Pepsi, however it took a very long time to get the drink replaced. Which brings me to the service which was slow but I don't blame her she was the only server in the entire restaurant and it was somewhat busy. Overall I would not recommend this place, unless you wanted pancakes. Then go but I think they need to stick to pancakes and breakfast food and they should consider taking some of the dinner items off the menu, especially if it is frozen store bought food and not fresh. There are too many items on the menu and it takes away from what they are specializing on.

Ate breakfast here when it first opened. The service was so-so. It is a Polynesian family breakfast experience. Healthy portions. It is almost impossible to do bad Pancakes. The kids loved them. It was crowded. I remember when this location was a pizza hut and always wondered why the other restaurants after never made it here.

The restaurant was very busy but the service lacked organization. My husband ordered chicken fried steak and I ordered the "surfer" sandwich. The prices are a good value considering the amount of food but it wasn't worth the wait and the lack of service. Might try again in the future maybe it was an off day.

This place is an anomaly in Anchorage. The reason is it's amazing quality of breakfast food, the quantity of food you get (huge portions) and the price of the food. I've been here a year and the price of going out is insane for what you get usually in Anchorage. Now Kava's has broken that issue for me in providing a home cooked breakfast feel for me when I don't have to feel like I'm breaking the bank just to have a nice meal that isn't a fast food chain. I've tried their omelets and been happy, I also really like their Loco Moco dish. It's so simple it works. But I assure you, it's worth a visit. It's nothing special for its decor and sometimes it's busy and it's harder for the servers to get to you. In a way, that's a plus, it means you're in a great spot that's frequented by the locals. Of course that's not fun when you're STARVING LOL. But again, I'm a fan and this place has me as a bonafide customer for however long my time in Anchorage is. Be well.

Enjoyed this place very very much. Food was solid. I got a burger .. it was so so. But the kids all got breakfast and it was EXCELLENT. Service needs to improve!!!! Seems to be family owned and family run. If not it is a close knit group of workers. Because of this, I think they lack professionalism that I would like to see. Too many workers sitting on their a$$ while we had no napkins, no water refills, and waiting for our check for way way way too long. We will be back and hopefully the service gets better. I am in heaven here, finally servings sizes as big as Denali, great service and awesome food. This is my new fave place to eat. When you order a 16 oz. Rib Eye Steak, you get it...cooked to your liking....not some dried out, teeny-tiny flavorless steak. This puts most places to shame. All-You-Can-Eat Kaluha Pig for $12.00 on Thursdays are amazing and Ox-Tail Soup Fridays are divine, my only complaint is that the Ox-Tail Soup can be offered as an All-U-Can-Eat, charging extra, I Will pay it!!! They have DirecTv on HD screens there and have always satisfied me as a customer.

If I could give this place a "0" star, I WOULD!!! Worse service ever. The waitress was extremely rude, hair in my food, and onion peel.

We went for breakfast here and it seemed like it was going to be great! We walked in and only a few tables were taken. As soon as we sat down, a huge rush of people came in. I'm talking to full capacity,with people waiting for tables. Only 3 waitresses were working, so the wait time for food or any kind of service was extremely long. Our order was taken, and drinks(coffee and chocolate milk) were brought, but we were forgotten about for the next 35 minutes. No one came to check on us or refill our drinks. When the waitress brought out our food, she said sorry for the wait,put the plates down,and disappeared. Of course, when we bit into our food EVERYTHING was COLD. Not even Luke warm. When confronted she acted surprised that it was cold even though she knew that our food was sitting out ready to go for at least 10 minutes. Awful experience all together. Shotty service and LOUD atmosphere (like a petting zoo). The food does have potential. If you happen to come here during a non busy time, i'm sure everything will be great, but I felt they weren't prepared for what the restaurant is capable of in Anchorage on a Saturday morning.

My philly steak sandwich was so huge they couldn't even close the take out box without a rubber band. Also, its not easy to turn eggs benedict into a filling meal, but these guys have found a way. After the Hogg Bros Cafe closed down years ago I never thought I would find another breakfast joint I would like as much. And I never will. But Kavas is as close as it gets, so recognize.

Interesting selection of Polynesian themed breakfast food, including fried rice, in a family run restaurant in what appears to be an old Pizza Hut. Not the cleanest place or one with the fastest service, but the food was tasty and the portions are huge. We went here after middle daughter talked it up after visiting during her National Geographic Student Expedition. One leaves with the feeling that eating here on a regular basis would quickly add to one's waistline.

Food is fantastic. Portion sizes are huge. The peanut butter whip cream is something dreams are made of. I'm from out of state and this is on my list of places I wish we're back home. I can't say enough things about the atmosphere-family friendly, and the food. The only thing this place needs is a bigger building, but then again would it still be The Kava house? You will regret not eating here. What are you waiting for? Breakfast is served all day.

Mmmm, delicious. Only four stars because the waitress was kind of out of her mind...got part of my order wrong and forgot part of my husbands. Granted we didn't mention it because the place was do busy. Great greasy spoon, my Chicken Fried Steak skillet was devine. :)

To be honest I was tempted to give this place a bad review, so I could have it all to my self! Very good food good prices and good portions. The staff was nice but they were very short handed on July 4th, only 2 waiters for the whole restaurant and it was packed. Not sure if this is common practice here or they were unsure of the volume of people for 4th of July. Will return!

I ran the Anchorage marathon this past weekend, and I severely re-injured my heel. I finished way slower than I expected, and felt miserable. I had to dart out of my hotel quickly, having just enough time to shower and pack up, and suddenly, I was out on the street, weary, beaten and in need of breakfast. There were plenty of places around, but as I flipped through yelp, all I wanted was pancakes. It stuck in my head. "Pancakes will make things better", I repeated to myself. I wasn't sure if I said it out loud or it was just my inner monologue. Either way, it kept being my one driving thought. The closest place? Kava's...Fortunately, the bus let off right near there, because I was not walking 2 miles more. (In retrospect, I *totally* would have.) I got seated and coffee'd immediately, and ordered a stack of Hawaiian pancakes with a side of hash browns and a glass of OJ. That's a big breakfast for me, and I needed it. The hash browns were very bland, and nothing special, but the pancakes...the pancakes...oh, the pancakes. I finished them fast, but it felt like forever. I wished I could pause the moment and crawl in between the pancakes and nap in them, spooning with and nibbling on the chunks of pineapple and banana. I would make whipped cream angels and never leave. I admit, this rating would probably have been a 4 on any other day. In fact, I never got a refill on my coffee, which would be a cardinal sin elsewhere. But, the circumstances and the life providing/saving pancakes that accompanied them made this a great experience for me.

Tried this place a year ago. It was amazing!!! Now-a-days....not so good. I recently found out Kava's actually sold this Penland Pkwy location and the new owners were suppose to change the name but haven't yet. Its a shame I hope they don't end up hurting the real Kava's on Muldoon.

Great food at a great price. I had (Mike's?) Irish Omlette, hash browns, biscuit and gravy. My wife had the breakfast melt with spam and home fries. My Omlette was great and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her melt. I love the 808 vibe too. Too many great looking menu items and not enough room in my stomach.

Smooth and hearty reindeer sausage, eggs cooked to my taste (soft scrambled, which is hard to get cooks to actually do right) and delicious Hawaiian pancakes with coconut, pineapple, macadamia nuts, and whipped cream. Mm-mm! Speaking of cream, my husband thought the grits were so creamy they might be made with cream. I don't live here, so I don't know if I'll ever be back, but I recommend this restaurant to locals and tourists alike.

Seriously, I gave snow city cafe a glowing review. However, now that I've eaten here it's night and day. The food is so much better here. The service is fast and friendly. The portions are big. Now that I've eaten here I'm not sure about what the hype is with snow city. Ultimately Kava's is just better.

You better be hungry when you go here. OMG! The portions are huge! Being a Pacific Islander, Kava's is right up my alley. I got the fried rice which I barely put a dent in. A mound of steamy deliciousness with a couple of slices of fried SPAM. Loved it, but took about 80% of it home with me to enjoy later. Most of the breakfast entrees come with either pancakes or toast. I asked if I could get the "farmer's pancakes" instead which is really a Hawaiian style crepe. Growing up, we called these "lina lina pancakes". Slather with butter, roll into a tube, and enjoy. Very ono! Great island style food! Next time, I'm bringing poi.

Food: Average- diner fare with a twist of Hawaii Large portions- come hungry Breakfast is served all day! Pricing: Reasonable- amount of food to cost ratio is good Service: Wonderful- Kat is super nice and bubbly! Ambiance: Eh... It's a little dive-y but that's ok. Booths are a tad un comfortable. Clean Recommend? YES.

This is an American Samoa run restaurant. If you have breakfast at a restaurant here in Anchorage you need to go here. Do not be shy! order the breakfast fried rice or one of the breakfast sandwiches. Samoans are large people, these portions are HUGE! just about everything here is sharable. if the thought of spam n eggs makes u drool, go here for sure! if not, pay em a visit and your life may never be the same again! Also prices here are very affordable!

Wow, I'm surprised this place isn't more talked about in the Anchorage breakfast scene! Describing this place in two words: Hawaiian Diner. It's one of the most unique eateries in Anchorage. I've only been here twice, but both times the food was: - Massively portioned - Massively tasty Portions: they are huge. I have a behemoth of an appetite, and I need a box. Tasty: this place probably has some of the best bacon in town. I'm not sure what exactly about it makes it so good, but the total package really whoops some of the "sad bacon" that seems to be so present in the A-N-C. Also, you can get pancakes as a side with just about anything. I love that. I have loved that since I was just a punk highschool kid going to Village Inn at 3am, drinking coffee, and thinking I was soOOOOoooo kewl. Oh, and if you get the pancakes farm style...they are more like CREPES! They are delicious, I highly recommend them. I've also gotten a "skillet" here (something else I ate as a young Village Inn patron). Skillets are something large swaths of the US do not understand. "Wut.? Is that like, an iron pan?" It's kind of like a breakfast casserole...or perhaps more like a "scramble" laid down a bet of tasty potatoes. Regardless of what a "skillet" technically is, they have them here. They are big. They are delicious. Only thing keeping this place from 4 stars is that the coffee is pretty mediocre. And the service can be a little lackadaisical, even when there aren't many folks in here.

Best breakfast in town! Closest that I have actually seen to Hawaii style breakfast in the states. I would recommend this place to anyone and it isn't expensive either!

I have tried this place twice. It is a casual ordinary breakfast place. Nothing spectacular. Fruit used on pancakes is out of a can. It fills the void- is good for a group, has a large menu, and is not pricey. For me it is not memorable. Equal or less than Denny's. The Macadamia Pancakes DO sound interesting... but I'm thinking it will be too much sugary sweetness .. but if I find myself her again... I will test em'

Pretty rundown looking and had dirty bathrooms. I ordered the eggs Benedict and while it was edible, it may have been the worst eggs Benedict I've had. I'm only giving this review three stars because the other members of my party liked their food and because the waitress was pleasant.

I was bummed about my experience. Someone told me this place was good. I went here this morning (fourth of July breakfast). Our server was friendly. I was a little frustrated with my meal and also when we got the tab. I ordered a breakfast sandwich. I told the waitress what I wanted for my sandwich. It came out with everything I wanted. What was disappointing about my breakfast sandwich was that it was greasy. They cooked my egg whites, spinach and tomatoes together (that was fine) but it had like a dark brown/black greasy residue. Very gross and sad. The hashbrowns were dry. I was bummed and defiantly wished I ordered something different. When we got the tab, my breakfast sandwich was billed a la cart, making it $18! $18 for a breakfast sandwich and my hashbrowns???????? I was charged $5 for the eggs, $3.95 for the bread, $2 for the avocado, $3.95 for the tomatoes and spinach and $3.95 for the hashbrowns. Say what?! I could have easily ordered a breakfast sandwich on their menu for $11 and made TONS of alterations. I thought it would be easy for the server if I just told her what I wanted on it... Apparently that cost me more money. I won't be going back to this place.

Service is very slow. We waited over an hour after ordering to get our food. There was one waitress and based on food delivery one cook. Regardless of the quality of the meal we were so frustrated after waiting so long that it didn't matter.

This place is just awesome. I can't believe it took me this long to try this place out. Friends and family recommended this place, and I was surprised on how good it was. Awesome variety, serving sizes and taste were great. Oh! And the service was quick and polite. Taste good, and fills you up; what more can you ask for? Definitely coming back here again soon.
