This by far one of my favorite Italian restaurants on this side of town. The restaurant is very cozy and elegant and great for a romantic outing. The menu selection is very large and mostly specializes in veal and seafood options. They almost always seem to have at least 3 or 4 specials a night too. Every dinner comes with soup or salad, freshly baked bread and a rock-solid antipasto tray. Dinner portions themselves are very large--it's impossible to leave this place hungry. Service has always been top-notch as well. They do have a sandwich menu for lunch and late night after 9pm I think and I wish they would offer that during dinner too because some of us aren't always in the mood for a 3 course heavy meal but that's not really a complaint as much as it is a suggestion.

At here on a whim last Friday with my wife. It was around 9pm and the restaurant was about half full. Our server was very nice. The bread was delicious. After we only ordered water for beverages, our server took about 10-15 minutes before coming back to take our order. Our soup and salad was good, although the salad was very small. Our food took close to 30 minutes to get but when we did it was good. Nothing amazing, but good. No overall complaints besides delays in ordering and waiting time for our food. Good meal.

Went with the husband for a nice quiet dinner. And boy, talk about quiet! We arrived just before 6 and the place with totally dead. Usually I don't mind when a place isn't busy but it seemed like we were being watched by their staff of 6-8 with no customers. We ordered right away mozzarella marinara, I had the frutti de mare the husband had a scallop dish. The antipasto plate was nice salami, mortadella, and pepperoni served with parmesan cheese and warm bread. They also brought out garlic olive oil. The bread and olive oil were excellent, and the antipasto plate a nice touch. The mozzarella marinara was not hot, actually barely warm. It came out and it wasn't even melty! I feel like that defeated the purpose of ordering that dish. We both opted for the soup which was a chicken soup with veg. which was pretty good and full of flavor. When our dishes came out I was pleasant greeted with a giant plate of linguine and tons of seafood. My husband's plate seemed tiny compared to mine even though his was pricier. (we both got seafood dishes, each over $30) Not that I was going to complain about it cause I had plenty of food, but the waitress forgot to bring my side of pasta the dish came with. All and all the food was nothing spectacular, we both left quite full and I had leftovers. It was very overpriced for what it was, I will say that they had excellent service that evening.

Good food with some tasty chicken noodle soup, but the service just plain sucked. We waited about 15 minutes between every course for the next one and at the end we had to tell the water server that we'd like our food boxed since our server hadn't stopped by since dropping off our food 30 minutes ago. During our meal they have a small bowl of cheese to add to your meal. There was a hair in our cheese. We showed the waiter and she did apologize, bit kind of looked at us as if it was our fault (neither of us have that color hair that was there). In the end she offered a free dessert or coffee. We thought the restaurant would be great, but it was kind of a disappointment. Food was okay - service was not, and really needs some work. 2 stars for food but none for service.

Horrid. I'm only slightly exaggerating. We stopped by for take-out after finding out our normal spot just down the street was closed (possibly for good). After paying 65 bucks(without tip) for Stuffed Shells, Mostaccioli (add 4 meatballs) , and Lasagna we were expecting food that came from just this side of heaven. What we got was watery Mostaccioli and Lasagna, 5 shells that clearly were stuffed by Lilliputians, and two pretty thinned out side salads. DISAPPOINTED!!! Perhaps if we had spent 140 dollars and ordered steak, lobster, and diamonds we would have been better satisfied. I can honestly and sincerely say as I Yelp before you today that we will not be back.

This is a very solid place. Good service good food. Cute place with little Christmas lights up over the bar. A bit of a neighborhood feel but trying to be a bit classy for a Milwaukee neighborhood. Very sweet. The bar made an excellent Manhattan. Large menu selection--but leans toward steak and seafood over Italian. Lovely complimentary antipasto plate with cheese, sausages, and a Excellent bread with both butter and a garlicky olive oil.great chick pea salad. Very decent chicken broth soup with rice. I had the petite filet (9 oz.) with the pasta side. Steak was very tender and cooked rare as requested. Good have had slightly better flavor. Pasta was fine with a decent red sauce. Others had shrimp scampi, a veal dish...everyone was pleased. Service was good. Not cheap by Milwaukee standards.

Lunch here was great! Everything was prepared fresh, the service was superb, the original owner (his son is the present owner) came over and talked to us. Very nice feel to this place. The specific foods we ordered were a tomato/anchovy salad (excellent-fresh, generous serving), and chopped liver and onions in a pasta. Believe it or not, the liver and onions was really good! I don't usually eat meat, but I had a taste of this, and it was superb. A friend of mine has been going here for many years and recommended dinner of grilled octopus, for which you have to call a day ahead to order. Highly recommend.

Date night with the boychild, a snowy Monday night. I use dinners like this as a way for my kids to practice dining protocol, so we'd discussed the menu, what he could expect, how to use the various pieces of silverware, etc. Service was SLOW, slow, slow... After perusing the menu, we decided an assortment of appetizers would best meet our needs. We'd been brought an antipasto plate with 3 cheeses, ham, salami, and gardiniera that was decent-not spectacular, along with a bread basket, containing an acceptable hunk of white not-quite-artisan bread. Upon hearing of our food choice, we were informed that the antipasto plate (half eaten at this point) would need to be removed or we'd be charged for it (no entrees being ordered). We had no interest in continuing on with it, so it was removed. We ordered 4 appetizers to share, and it took FOREVER for the first to arrive. During this time, my son's cold kicked into high gear (by now it was coming up on 7:30, we'd already been there an hour). We just wanted to eat and go home. Dishes were nothing out if the ordinary, the eggplant strips could have been spectacular, but were undercooked. A couple of the dishes were prepared differently than described in the menu and everything came out deep fried, accompanied by the ubiquitous marinara sauce. All told, we spent 2 hours and $50 on 4 apps, 1 glass of wine, and 1 kiddie cocktail. The food was probably worth 3 stars, the speed of service worth 2, and the friendliness/helpfulness of our server worth 3, so I'll be generous & give this visit a 3. This wasn't my first visit, but it had been a while. I'm sure regulars love it, but we were unimpressed.

Caterina's gets a solid 4 star rating from moi. I had been meaning to get here for years, literally, and finally found myself looking for a place to have dinner on the southside. It's a little bit old school in decor, but the menu is diverse and not just your traditional Italian fare. There were about 6 different specials as well. Our waitress was a sweetie and we left her a tip above and beyond the normal 20%. Loved the free antipasto plate, the bread, and the overall experience. It may be another ten years before I am looking to have dinner in this part of town, but if I do - I'll be back.

Glad I went out of my way to enjoy a good meal here. Good, friendly service. Food was very good. Lots of regular locals flowing in and out - everybody knew everybody. I would definitely go again. Tuesday night special was Spedini or any veal dish for $19.99 - a very good deal. Antipasti was good - nice way to start the evening.

Small little italian restaurant in or near West Allis. Recently went here on a whim when seeking Italian. Great ambience, perfect for a date. Prices seemed a bit high, was kinda taken aback at first. But service was top notch, menu is very Italian, very clean as well. Bread was fantastic. We had the Lasagna & a Chicken/Onion/Pepper dish. Food was very excellent, cooked to perfection & seasoned just right. You can't go wrong here, but a bit pricey Will go back when I want real Italian.

Well, I had originally wanted to get/pick up some pie from Pizzeria Scott's but they were currently experiencing a 1:15 wait - wow. So, I ventured back to Caterina's. The reviews were all over the place, good, bad, so-so, etc, but I was curious. I decided to just ask the server what she'd recommend and she suggested this penne dish. I'm still not quite sure what it was, it was pretty vanilla in flavor but not horrible either. I'm sure they must have a signature dish they'd prefer to lead with - this couldn't have been it. Anyway, not a bad experience. Service was good but strangely slow at the end. It took me about 15 minutes to leave. Normally not an issue but a long week of travel had me leaning towards getting back to my hotel to assume the coffin position in bed - stupid tired. I'd try this place again but I'd certainly take time to dice into the menu a bit more and try something they're a bit more proud of.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Caterinas. The ambience, staff and even other patrons simply made it enjoyable by being nice and friendly. Having a little spot ready for me at the bar when I called and asked if they had a bar to eat at (because I was solo) left a very memorable impression on me. The bartender was the owner. I liked that, too. The antipasti that comes with the meal was unreal and a meal in and of itself. The garlic slices -- well, let's just say I'm a garlic lover. So it was pretty awesome. It's a homey feel, unpretentious so if you like pretentious maybe go to Bartolotta or Bacchus or something. Cause this place is great and they deserve a lot of appreciation for who they are. I plan in making it back sometime when I'm in that area.

My husband and I went here with my family. We had a party of 6. The food was absolutely amazing! The service was excellent! Every meal is served with an antipasto tray, fresh bread with dipping oil, and soup or salad. Our bread was fresh out of the oven! All of our food was amazing with generous portions. I had the linguine with fresh mussels in marinara sauce. I have to say that they were by far the best mussels I've ever had! They gave me so many of them as well! They were definitely fresh and perfectly cooked! They only thing that was disappointing was the amount of space. It was a bit cramped but it was worth it for the amazing food!

I fell in love with this place the first (of many, hopefully!) visit. We came here on a whim after a multi-day bike ride. It was one of those days when you just can't get enough calories and I was craving something delicious and filling. We found Caterina's on Yelp and tried it out based on other reviews. This is everything a great Italian restaurant should be! You can sense the authenticity when you walk in the door, from the atmosphere, to the smells, to the service staff. You could tell a lot of the patrons were regulars, which is Italian for "family". The meal began with some delicious antipasti, and bread with dipping oil and the freshest parmigiana cheese I have ever tasted! What have I been eating all my life up until this point?! The waitress was personable, knowledgable, and just did everything right. She knew the specials without hesitation, she could answer questions about the menu, and she kept our water glasses full. The food was delicious, and again, authentic. The menu was broad- it had standards like pasta and marinara, chicken breasts, lasagna, etc. I got linguine and steamed mussels, not something you find at that ugly step child Olive Garden! Everything was delicious and I could not wait to finish the leftovers the next day. I would highly recommend this place, as a nice night out or a great date location. The prices were average, but when you factor in the complimentary antipasti, salad, and bread, along with great service, it is worth it!

The house soup was good and my husband enjoyed his salad. We had a bottle of wine and the antipasta was a nice touch. The bread was very good too! Friday "Fish Fry" Was in the mood for a different Friday "fish fry" so we went to Caterina's. I love an Italian restaurant that starts you off with great bread and an olive oil dip . . . . mmmm. The salad was obviously fresh, you can tell when a restaurant serves veggies that have been sitting around for a while, ours were crisp and delicious . . . nice salad. I had the baked cod, I asked for melted butter which was served in a cute ceramic bowl, the butter kept melted and warm with a small candle. The fish was great, flaky, tender, tasty and oh so decadent dunked in that butter. Served with a drizzle of parsley flakes around the edge of the plate, cool presentation. My companions had the perch and loved it. Great service, great attention to detail, would definitely recommend.

Cute little place, almost like going over to Grandma's house for dinner. Very charming and inviting with a framiliar menu. Nothing real exciting for a vegetarian... just a couple pasta dishes w/not the freshest veggies. Salads are good as is the home made bread.

I too have eaten fine meals on many continents. Caterina's can hold their own with any cozy restaraunt in any culture. When you walk in - make sure you say hi to Tony (the older gentleman at the door)..he'll hook you up with a smile - and suggest the best wine to match the AWESOME meal. Call ahead on romantic nights - the perfect Valentines day meal BTW.

This fantastic Italian restaurant has established an old-time feel AND a menu that reflects the truth of its heritage. As opposed to many modern, up-scale restaurants, meals here include both sides and soup or salad, so while the price isn't cheap, it also doesn't contain any hidden extras. The service is outstanding--and management has even allowed one of the waitresses to come up with her own salad dressing combo... that's definitely worth asking for. I've been here for both lunch and dinner and enjoyed myself immensely at either time of the day. The food is all outstanding: highly flavorful lamb chops; nicely aged steaks; fresh seafood; and perfectly prepared pasta. Starters have also been great--very fresh romaine and vegetables in their salads, or soups specially made that day. Of course, all that food means I've always ended up with left-overs, and no desserts... So someday I may have to try eating just hors d'oevres to save room for what have always sounded like tastey dessert options.

Charming interior and friendly wait staff. Owner is into cars. Prices are on the steep side. Warm bread with a bowl of oil with garlic buds is a nice touch. Manhattan Clam Chowder was the waitress' fav, but just average in my view. Entree was Linguini with mushrooms, onions, garlic, butter and shrimp-- very good. I would take the family, but the total cost would be high. If you like Italian food, it's a good place to celebrate occasionally-- lots of veal and muscle dishes.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
