I have been here a few times! I think the prices are extremely fair for the quality of food and the service and ambiance! There was a group of 4 and our check was 165.00. We had 3 drinks a piece, and 2 appetizers also on that check! I had the ribeye and it had fantastic flavor! The only thing that heals this to a 4 star experience was the steak was a tad bit overdone for me! I ordered med rare and it wAs a bit too done for my liking! I still ate it all without a problem! The server and manager asked several times how he meal was and it wasn't bad enough to complain! The service was fantastic and the bartenders were also great! I highly recommend this as I think it is the best priced and quality steak in the area! This is one of my favorite restaurants!

Food was good, but the stuffed mushrooms were raw and stuffing was cold. They took the mushrooms that we had not eaten and re heated them, did not make a new order or add more mushrooms for the ones we almost ate. My wife ordered a medium rare steak and I ordered a rare steak. When the order came my steak was medium and hers was rare. We sat there for 15 mins before anyone came to the table to see how everything was. The manager came and talked to us but did not deduct any thing off our bill. Will never go here again.

Very nice inside. Great atmosphere but didn't have any steak I couldn't get at Texas Roadhouse for about 1/2 the price. Didn't offer any bake potatoes either. My wife was looking to have Lamb which they didn't have either so had to give them three stars.

I tell everyone that I meet that if they are looking for a steak in the stateline area this is the spot. These are as good as you get at Smith and Wollenskys or Mortons. My wife who usually isn't a steak person even raved about it being the best steak she has had. It is a bit pricey for the area but worth every penny.

We have been here to eat and they have great food. The atmosphere is nice and you can be dressy or casual. Good service and friendly. On time reservations. Haven't had to wait long. We always like to have a drink any ways at the bar before we eat. Nice bar area.

Enjoyed the atmosphere (feels like you are in a Chicago restaurant) and great food. My family celebrated a special occasion there. The service was good. Attentive wait staff and food was well presented. Will be going there again. Adjoining hotel is so well decorated!

I love this place. It really is a nice establishment and it is a classy place. Love the old building although I wish the old floors could be polished a little bit. My husband and I both had the sirloin steak and we both said, it was the best steak we have ever had. We had soup and salad and those were great. Rolls delicious. Bloody Mary's great. Staff always friendly. It is nice to eat outside as you are looking out over the Rock River and there is a band playing. I will be coming back this fall when it turns a little bit more crisp outside.

Wow! Very impressed with this place. I love the decor and the brick walls and the ambience is on point. Tonight we ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer, and the special baked cod and the petite filet. The stuffed mushrooms were good but I couldn't taste the crab. The baked cod was meh... Not much flavor at all. The petite filet was excellent! I do have to say the best filet I've ever eaten, hands-down! My martini was served in a stainless steel glass, which was nice to keep it ice cold. The menu doesn't have a whole lot of options. One option that was confusing was the farm raised Atlantic salmon, which I'm not sure why they would put farm raised on their menu and how can it be farm raised and from the ocean. All in all it was decent and we may return for the petite filet sometime. Oh yeah, and Alex was our server and he was great!

I have been to Merrill & Houston's multiple times since they opened but have finally decided to sit down and write a review. To start with, the decor is very upscale for Beloit, with a large bar area and additional rooms for banquets or large groups. It does overlook the Rock River and is attached to the Iron Works Hotel. They sometimes have bands that play up front on the weekends. The drinks they offer are very good. The most famous is the Old Fasion which is a Wisconsin staple. Other drinks they make very well include martinis, and they also have a very good selection of wine and beer. The apps are limited for people who are vegetarian, only offering bruschetta. I was not a huge fan, since it is more like a soft roll with tomatoes and onions on top. I have also tried the stuffed mushrooms which are very good. The bread that they give out for free is amazing, almost like butter is baked into the bread. I have tried a variety of their main entrees. In regards to their steak, they do have a large selection of types. I have tried the filet and it has been hit or miss. I have tried it at least 3 times and have to say it is a little inconsistent. When prepared correctly, it is awesome. They do tend to over cook steaks, so it is best to tell them to prepare one level less than what you prefer. As far as desserts, the selection and presentation is excellent. Everything from the Creme brulee to the banana bread pudding are all excellent. Service is also a little hit or miss, depending on how busy the restaurant is. Given the limited selection in Beloit, it is a good choice for fine dining. If you are vegetarian, they will accommodate you with some entrees. If nothing else, it is a great place for drinks and dessert.

I just realized today how I hadn't written a review for this place and couldn't believe it. I love this restaurant so much that I actually received a gift certificate to it for Christmas last year. The food is delicious, the staff is very friendly, and the drinks are great. I actually had my wedding reception at the Iron Works, but it was catered by the restaurant and I've had people tell me how much they loved the food and want to go to the restaurant to try it now. My personal favorite for the appetizer is the coconut shrimp and I am a fan of prime rib. If they have specialty cocktails, you can't go wrong with ordering one. They also have live bands perform on various nights of the week, so I would call ahead in case you wanted a quiet night or a night when a band is there.

We held a baby shower at Merrill & Houston's last Sunday and everything was perfect!!! The room was beautiful and the food was delicious, but the best part was the outstanding customer service and attention to detail provided by Tanya & Nicole! From making sure the room was set up perfectly to accommodating a few last minute changes and even helping fix a broken candy whale for the top of the cake, these two ladies provided excellent customer service and made the day extra special and easy!

Great steak, great atmosphere, great dinner with my dad. One thing blew me away. The floor was nailed down by old school cut nails. Talk about attention to detail. A billion stars.

Amazing ribeye - friendly Midwest staff and great atmosphere - what else?? Bring your appetite portions are enormous and amazing. Eating at the bar is just as good as table service.

Took my wife and 2 kids here to eat because a friend recommended it. First off there is no kids menu which isn't a huge deal but every place should have one. Second the lemonade tasted like blandly flavored lemon water. Third the steak was only decent at best!!! My wife loves steak and didn't finish it because it was tasteless and dry!!! The only reason it gets a 2 star is because the bread is good. That's it. Will definitely not be back and definitely don't recommend it to anyone. It does have a cool western style bar though. Might be a good spot for drinks or something but definitely not a steak dinner with the family.

Great Steak. Good Place to go when visiting beloit or staying at the Ironworks hotel.

The first time I went here two years ago, the food was amazing. Everything was perfect. Then I came back again around two months ago. The coconut shrimp was small, a little burnt, and just not as good as many other places. My fillet mignon was also kind of stringy. How ever our waiter was good and my drinks were well made. Another downside is a busser named Alex, he was pretty rude. However this place gets four stars bc despite my mixed experience many other people I know with good taste in food swear by this place and have assured me that my second experience is a fluke.

heard great things, the three of us all loved the steak but the salads were meh......the p Mkotatoes were cold.....onion rings cold...service was good....pricey for one out of three.

I go to Beloit about once every 3 months for business. It was suggested that I stay in the Ironworks Hotel and Merrill & Houston's is attached so it seemed logical to stay close. I met a client there for dinner this past Wednesday. The place is awesomely decorated with the fireplaces and wood, very well done like a good steakhouse ought to be. It seemed busy at the bar and the 2 "hosts" and the restaurant were clearly unprepared for the influx of people. We were seated about 6:45 for a 6:30 reservation and the tables in the dining area were not full at all. Our server was excellent. He did a great job explaining the specials and was prompt, courteous. I couldn't ask for anything else. We ordered the coconut shrimp which were unimpressive for the price. They were clearly frozen out of a bag, and best described as "meh". The Brushetta was excellent. I'm used to crusty bread with the tomatoes and spices on top. They chopped in mozzarella which was a nice change, and the bread was "puffy" and softer. It was good. Both of our steaks were excellent. Nice cuts of Ribeyes that were cooked 100% perfect. They have this down. It was well seasoned, tender and delicious. Highly suggested. The butter sauteed mushrooms were forgettable and the fried onions I could have done without. I'm wavering between 3 and 4 stars so I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Merrill & Houstons.

We were disappointed with what we had been calling our favorite restaurant since it opened. When one is going to drop $100.00 on a meal you expect some type of experience, rather than a fast food meal. We sat down at 5:55 and were getting in our car at 6:35. We hadn't finish our mediocre salad when here came the steaks. The menu has been reduced in size to hurry up choices. The wait staff pushes continually "You still working on that"? Ugh. We had been recommending this place since it opened, no longer. What ever changes management has made for efficiency has left us cold and not to return.

The food, drinks and company at the bar great, excellent place for a group, family and kid. Food close to top notch for the price, it's not cheap for most but 30-50 or Mir per plate.

This is one of the nicest restaurants in the stateline area. Steaks are Chicago-quality, and the menu is reasonably priced. Service is always above-average, and is occasionally outstanding. If you haven't given it a try you owe it to yourself to take Merrill and Houston's for a spin. You won't regret it.

Ate at the restaurant while staying in the attached hotel on a weekend trip from Chicago. The food was terrific, we had a ribeye and salmon, which were both cooked very well and tasted fantastic. The sides were delicious, particularly the garlic mashed potatoes. We also had the crabbed stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer and they were great. Totally recommended for anyone wanting a nice dinner in this area!

Went with my parents on a Friday and was really pumped because I heard it was the "hip" new place in southern Wisco. Let me tell you what's not hip...a one man band and 2 giant TVs at the bar. If we could eliminate those 2 things and the slightly TGI-Friday's feeling entry waiting area, the interior would be pretty nice (and the rusty metal canopy at the entry is pretty impressive). The food was good; chicken liver appetizer was a tad greasy but really tasty (probably the grease) and my steak was good though cooked well past the requested Medium Rare. My mom's filet was awesome and perfectly Medium Rare as she ordered. The service was great to start but after the food arrived we never got a check-up from the waitress (drinks were empty and the place wasn't full). I'll be a maybe for another dinner there.

Went here last night for dinner. Awesome steak and the salmon was great too! We had Brandy Old Fashions for drinks and they were the best ones I've ever had, and I always get one wherever we are dining. Beautiful decor everywhere, very welcoming. Have to get the bruschetta for an app! Cheers!

This restaurant is located on the river front and is attached to a newly refurbished hotel across from the college campus. This was our second visit to this restaurant and we weren't disappointed. Each table had a container with a flashlight and reading glasses. (Perhaps an indicator of their primary clientele?) Large bar with TVs. There was live music the second time we were there. Good service, reservations are suggested.

FANTASTIC! My husband and I ordered steaks, both of which were done perfectly. Service was attentive and well-timed; we neither felt rushed or ignored. Love the new look and the ambiance. We will be returning frequently.

FANTASTIC!! My husband and I came here with another couple on a Saturday night. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in the door and the service was awesome the entire night! Everything was timed perfect from the first drink order to the last bottle of wine! The men had steak while us ladies ordered the seafood alfredo. All 4 meals were excellent! After dinner we enjoyed listening to a great band. The atmosphere has such a charm about it. We would recommend this to all of our friends and will be back!

Good food crappy service over priced We recently held our company party at this restaurant had heard was a good experience. Soon wrong. They charge a room fee just to be there and required us to pre order everything and when we had a few no make it due to weather we were charged for there meals. For what you get it is ways over priced. If they want to charge those prices they need to train their staff better. Waitress was rude would not even acknowledge you when you asked for something to drink. For spending nearly 2500 bucks at there place would have expected top notch service which is what they promised but. Did not come close to delivering. Would never recommend them for an event.

My husband and I visited on 4/21/13. He ordered the prime rib and I ordered the petite filet bernaise w crab. I ordered mine medium and it came overdone. I am surprised being that this is a steakhouse. They did offer to remake it and it was medium when it came. My husband was almost done w his meal when my new meal did come. I would have thought there would be some compensation for the inconvenience since the prices are not inexpensive . I am not sure if we will go back or not .

Pretty solid steak. Bread was different (good), and the haystack fried onions on the steak reminded me of Berns Steakhouse in Tampa.

My husband and I had a gift card and went on a Friday night. Although it was crowded, we got seated right away. The service we received was excellent. Their lobster bisque was fantastic. We also ordered the sirloin steak and duck. Both were cooked perfectly. We ordered their creme brûlée for dessert and it was the best we've ever had. My only complaint would be their prices were pretty high, and the martini I ordered wasn't quite mixed right; other than that, a wonderful evening.

My wife and I came in on a busy Friday night and had a great experience. Service was quick and friendly. We had bruchetta for an appetizer.... large portion and very good. My wife got a filet and I got a bone-in ribeye, both were fantastic and cooked just as requested. We had creme brulee and the banana bread pudding for desert, also fantastic. Its a little pricy, but for a quality steak absolutely worth it. The atmosphere is great too, plus there was live music! This is our new go to date night restaurant.

This place is Absolutely Fantastic! Talk about Classy. The Food is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G... After tasting the wonderfulness that is food here, price is of No Consequence! My wife and I have eaten here 3 different Occasions. And am always impressed! Try a Bloody Mary if you like them, it's Fabulous! Friendly, wonderfully Decorated and Comfortable. Highly Recommended.

This is a great restaurant in Beloit! The ribeye was excellent, although the garlic mashed potatoes were pretty salty. What really gives this place the five stars is the creme brulee; it was some of the best I've ever had! I would definitely recommend Merril and Houston's for a special night out!

I walked in with a friend on a Wednesday night around 6 pm. We waited about 5 minutes for someone to seat us ... Finally walked into the restaurant looking for someone. Once seated we sat with our menus for about 15 minutes. Several waiter staff walked past us without any acknowledgement and no water on the table. We finally got up and walked out. So disappointing...especially on a week night when it isn't that busy. We won't be back in. If you expect good service do not go here.
