My daughter's organization was having a fund raiser and Joeseppi's was hosting it by also donating a portion of all dinners to their cause. That brought us for the first time to Joseppi's. And this won't be our last visit to Joeseppi's. The owner, Joe Stortini, greeted us at the check in counter. You may recognize that name from many fine past Pierce County Italian restaurants his family has owned and operated over the years. As our stay went on, he stopped by our table and other's to check on their dining experience. The restuarant is pretty low key with an Italian deli/sandwich take out counter at the entry. There is a lounge dining room as well a general dining room. The menu is southern Italian with chicken, pasta, pizza, salads and soups. Of the many pastas, there are a variety of sauces to make your dish a custom dish. There are daily specials (Wednesday is 1/2 price wine night, Thursday is prime rib night and so on). I was pleased that Joeseppi's made a point of offering Washington state wines (always a pet peeve of mine when a Washington restaurant wine list is all out of state wines). The food was done just right and even with an added distraction of my daughter's organization seating and bussing tables, the service prompt but not pushy. Two entrees, salads, Tiramisu (yum) and a bottle of wine = $65. Double nice that a percentage of our meal was donated to the daughter's cause.

We love Joe, the house blend salad dressing, the mushroom penne and the tiramisu! Always a favorite in our book. Suitable for family dining or date night.

Really good option for good Italian food in Tacoma. The owner is always on hand to greet you, which is a fun touch. Service is okay. The food isn't the best you've ever had, but it's not bad either. Prices are a bit high for what you get, but again, pretty middle of the road. Overall, I keep returning because I like it, but it's not a destination place. More like a "We're in the area, let's eat there" kind of place.

Dinner was ok service. The main meals were flat. The spicy chicken sauce was canned sauce with red pepper flakes. Boring. The staff were ok, eager to help once they arrived. Dessert was great, the best part of the meal. For me you can go to spaghetti factory and have a better meal and pay 1/3 of the price.

Great, quick service, family owned and operated. The service is always personable and friendly, and they a;ways remember our names when we go there. A special touch. Always accomadating any of our special requests, without upselling. Great family food, and good Bar atmosphere a bit nicer than the local pub. Sincere service from people that seem to take pride in what they do and how they do it. Mike is always exceptional.

This place is amazing. I took my mom and family here for the Mother's Day Buffet. It was the best experience and had a great selection. The best part about it: My mom is dealing with breast cancer and doesn't have much of an appetite. She tried to try a little of everything and filled her plate. After a few bites, she felt full. Joe's son was our host, and said he would gladly get her a ToGo box for her meal and one for some desserts. It sure made my mom happy and made her Mother's day special. Thanks Joseppis!!!!! And thank you for making us feel like part of your family!!!!

The place is inviting and people are friendly. The only issues I had was with how lonf it took to get orders taken and the fact that I am super picky about Italian food. Coming from a heavy background growing up with authentic meals this one let me down. It seemed pretty "Americanized". It is pricey and I think they needed more staff. Our poor sweet waitress seemed overwhelmed and it wasn't even busy but it seemed she was the only one serving. She messed up our orders quite a bit but took care of it appropriately ans efficently. All in all it fell short but maybe I will try it again someday due to the decent customer service.

I read a few reviews (mostly negative) before going to this place to eat. As soon as my friend and I entered the place the hostess quickly sat us down and gave us our menus. About 5 mins later the waiter came and took our orders. Our drinks came soon after. My girlfriend and i decided to split their specialty pizza and their garlic breadsticks. The breadsticks were ok, nothing special and their marinara sauce on the other hand was like canned tomatoe sauce. The pizza was good though. Overall it was better than expected (from the bad reviews), the service was amazing. Made up for all the bad things.

My boyfriend and I come here sometimes for our date night. The food is pretty good, but the salad with their homemade dressing is what makes me keep going back. It has Gorgonzola cheese in it I believe and it's amazing! Last time we went, which was last month I tried the Chicken Marsala and it was really good. It was seasoned really nice. The Alfredo sauce is okay, and I have not tried the marinara sauce yet. The one thing that sucks is their Bellini's'. It tasted like really cheap beer and I do not drink beer. All in all we will continue to have our date nights here.

Come on, guys!... give me some culinary mystery here ... if you make your sauces up ahead of time and hold 'em on a steam table, at least keep 'em outa sight so I can fantasize that they'r made to order! The food here is just OK but do we really need more "...just OK..." in the world of food? It does have a good family-neighborhood vibe to it though. The founding father to this place, Joe Stortini... a great guy. I hope he's still around - he's more than ... just OK.

Some make comments that Joeseppi's is Americanized Italian food. While that may be true, this is a step or two above Olive Garden. The owner comes to personally greet me on most occasions. The food is above average, but little things like cold food and wait staff that doesn't know much about the menu prevent a higher rating. I'd probably go 3.5 stars if i could. Some of their dishes are wonderful. Sausage soup, the turkey/havarti/pesto/focaccia sandwich, and some of the Italian basics are good. I always have a positive experience, just not a perfect one.

Great food with a good atmosphere. If you like Italian food, you'll definitely want to go here. I only wish they had more dessert options. This is a personal preference as their desserts look delicious, just not in the mood for any of them. Maybe 5-stars next time? :)

  • Sean R.

Great Italian food and reasonable prices. The Owner Joe has come to my table on each occasion I have dined there, making the place feel very warm not to mention quite welcoming. The only reason I didn't give Joeseppi's a 5th Star is due to the fact that the time I had Veal Parmesan it was very overcooked.

    (4)
  • David E.

The 3 Layer Lasagna was scrumptious Garlic Cheese bread appetizer was delish the service was good. Price comparable to most Itallian restaurants in the area. The salad was lacking originality like it was from a bag..If there was a 3.5 stars thats what I'd rate it

I have been to Joeseppi's twice and had two different experiences. My first visit was with my husband and another couple. The wait was long but the atmosphere was nice. Service was ok but they messed up our order, which resulted in a longer wait because they had to redo it. They were apologetic and our food was the next to come out. They didn't offer any comp appetizer or discount for the error but we appreciated that they took accountability for their mistake. From my recollection, the food was pretty good and overall we had a nice time. My friends from Seattle and Renton were coming for a visit and we recommended Joeseppi's for dinner. First, it was a slow evening (normally, this is great) due to some scheduled maintenance at the restaurant (they would be closing early that particular evening). Fine. No big deal. The food? NOT woo woo. The portions were fine (usually quite generous) but the food just wasn't the same. To be honest, I was slightly embarrassed that my husband and I had recommended it. No one complained about their food but no one said, "Wow. This place is really good. Great recommendation guys." Everyone seemed to really enjoy their dessert...so I guess there was some saving grace in the end. Needless to say, I am not sure that my husband and I will be going back anytime soon. It's not often that I would recommend something and I regret taking my friends here. I'm sure they're comparing the Italian restaurants in Seattle to Tacoma and this restaurant didn't help the south end that night. Too bad...looks like I'll be on the hunt for a good Italian place!

Tonight was my second time here. Overall, it's great. Friendly service & good food. I was slightly put off by our hostess this evening though. She took her time in even greeting us when we walked in, picking her nails and sighing loudly. When she took us to our table, she acted as though it was the worst thing in the world. Threw our menus down with an attitude. Luckily our server Colin was great and Joe came around and said hi to us as he usually does. That redeemed our visit.

A solid Italian restaurant at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is pretty intimate as it's not a very big restaurant to begin with. I ordered the Joeseppi's Trio which includes a combination of spaghetti with meat sauce, fettuccine with alfredo, and cheese tortellini with tomato basil cream sauce. One thing to note is that the sauces are on a the heavy side and the portions are really big, so be prepared to take home some food for leftovers. The sauces are pretty basic, which is good for kids or picky eaters like me. I know this comparison doesn't do this place justice, but it reminds me of a better quality Olive Garden. It's not your over the top, fancy Italian restaurant, but the food is tasty and full of flavor. And they have great bread sticks. Can't beat that! Definitely worth a try.

-Food- If they could greatly improve this ONE catagory, I'd give this place 4-5 stars easy !!! But since the opening, in comparison to other venues, Joeseppi's Italian styled pasta has tasted rather bland and uninspired to me, except for hints of garlic h

  • Lauren D.

The staff are always friendly and the service is great. They have ok bread but it comes with a nice garlic butter. The salads are great...get the house blend dressing. The pasta is tasty...I recommend the creamy tomato sauce on your choice of noodles. When I go to Tacoma this is one of the places I usually go to.

Service is mediocre at best and the food is terribly inconsistent. The Sheilas Special sandwich was awesome the first time I had it, but fell on it's face the second time. Joe is really nice; always greeting patrons at the door with a smile and a handshake. Its too bad his staff can't emulate his spirit of service.

My husband and I have been here a few times and each time I'm happy we went. My chicken dish was a huge serving - so much so that I could share with my husband and take a decent amount home to enjoy later! The only problem I had with the restaurant was the seating. It seemed like the bar area was huge and roomy but that the tables outside the bar were in a narrow hallway so most of the restaurant traffic went by while we were trying to talk and enjoy a semi-private dinner... Our server was great, the location was great and I loved the price for the quality and quantity!

I don't eat pasta very often because carbs and me are not great friends, but when I do, Joeseppi's seafood fettuccine is to DIE FOR! So much food, that I'm able to take lunch for myself the next day, and it is mouth melting delicious. They have a great Riesling wine as well. I really enjoy this restaurant.

The service here is great. The attentive staff seems to be dedicated to making dining at this establishment a very pleasant experience. I have eaten here several times and have yet to be disappointed by anything on the menu. So far my favorite entree has been the Margherita Pizza.

  • Martha H.

All in all, I'd rather eat at the Spaghetti Factory - it's cheaper and the bread is better. But I'd eat here before I'd at Cafe Europa. What I like about Joeseppi's: The gorganzola salad dressing on the house salad. It was the best part of my meal. Also, my friend's leftovers - she ordered liguini with meat sauce and it was pretty tasty when I ate it for lunch the next day. What I hate about Joeseppi's: The White Clam sauce - I couldn't eat it. It's like eating fried paste - gloppy and greasy with a few rubbery clams thrown in for a distracting texture. I didn't even bother to have them box it up to take home.

This is the second time I've been to Joeseppi's. The first time was a few years ago, and I don't remember much other than it was a bit pricey and the food was decent. My wife and I were out looking for a bite to eat since we didn't have time to go shopping this weekend. As I stated before, we'd been to Joeseppi's a while back. She was in the mood for some Italian food and we were in the area so we went for it. As I had remember the food was a bit expensive (relatively speaking). You'll end up paying about $15 per plate, so toss in a couple drinks and maybe an appetizer and your bill could easily hit $50-60 including tip. The food is excellent. I had the chop-chop salad (wasn't in a big pasta mood) and my wife had the cheese ravioli with meat sauce. Both dishes were great. The salad was a good portion, with not too much dressing and not too little, and there was a good ratio to meat, lettuce, and other veggies. I was very pleased. I only had a bite or two of my wife's pasta, but what I had was great. The sauce is what makes there pasta. Very flavorful and not 'just another tomato sauce'. I'd highly recommend going when you are in the mood for some good pasta. If it wasn't for the good food this place would have pulled 2 stars (with good service it would be a 4). The service was mediocre at best. We sat in the bar and the bartender helping us was less than attentive. The few times he checked on us he didn't even stop. He just asked us how things were as he walked by and didn't even listen for an answer (this happened twice while my wife was trying to order a Sprite from him). In addition to that, when he did take 3 seconds to stop he was heavily pushing getting more things (dessert, drinks, etc). I appreciate asking (that is very normal), but he was awkwardly pushy. Not really rude, just asked directed questions making it awkward to say no to. I'm sure my experience with their service isn't the way things always are, but I expect more when going to a restaurant and paying $50+ for 2 people. I'm sure I'll give it another go, but it may be a year or two down the road again.

We wanted to love it but couldn't. Had high hopes. The owner greets you when you walk in which is nice. Very kid friendly. Horrible horrible service, just average food. The waiter never brought our wine, we never got breadsticks, our food was just warm. We weren't offered fresh pepper like everyone else. Never got water refills. When we told the waiter this, he brushed it off. Pizza tasted like chain and I think stouffers is better than their lasagna. Definitely won't be back.

Nice place to meet or pick up a sandwich. They are great at having fundraising events and the owner is always there to greet his cunstomers (very nice). We haven't been in years but both times we have had the same results. High prices and that's okay if the quality is there but they use run of the mill average quality products at best. A $14.00 salad had that baco bits vs a few strips of the real stuff and the cheese was that generic Sysco junk. Serious, how do you make a bad salad?

We've eaten at Joeseppi's many times. We share the Manager's Duo with creamy tomato/basil sauce on one half and white clam sauce on the other (or any two choices of sauce and you can choose the pasta, also). We buy one extra salad with the House dressing which is delicious. We also order a side of meatballs (two large meatballs to share). My husband usually has a beer and our bills are in the area of $36. I find the food tasty, but I will admit that the portion size has gotten smaller, recently, but we had PLENTY to eat--just not as much left over to take home as in the past. Joe Stortini is almost always there and goes from table to table visiting and shaking hands.

This is our Valentine's Day spot year after year. The service is wonderful, they have an acapella quartet that goes around to every table and even Joe (the owner) get's down in the trenches and waits or busses tables. Small home town feel with great quality and customer service, who could ask for more?!

Well, I've been hee twice now... and that's enough. Both times my orders were screwed up. The first time, I was trying to be nice - and sent it back with little complaint. They returned with a fresh meal just as my husband was finishing his... I had them put it in a box. The second time was more of a headache. They messed it up TWO times. (Now, I don't order with crazy instructions, etc --- we're talking chicken instead of shrimp here!!) Good place for a crowd - maybe. But I'm over it.

Road Bump in the search for Italian Food in the Tacoma Area. As you can see from my profile I don't give may poor reviews, but here, I feel I need to in the interest of public service. This place serves food that is straight off the Sysco Foods Italian Menu for Sr. Citizens.... Bland... Uninventive... The environment was sterile and the service was relatively poor. The chef was a loud and annoying college kid who was arguing the whole time with the owner over the price of his meal that he was going to eat during his break ... All around poor experience ... They get 2 stars instead of one cause I am a generally nice guy and because the owners had a lot of awards on the wall that indicated they were heavily involved in community service in the area ...

My experience at Joeseppi's was excellent. My boyfriend and I went in around 7 on a Saturday night. We were seated right away -- by the manager, I believe and were given the VIP treatment. He gave us free appetizers, checked on us frequently, gave helpful recommendations about dinner and wine, all around wonderful service! He was our only server the entire evening. I had a seafood pasta dish - huge portion - plenty for lunch the next day. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, but the sauce was nothing too special. It came with a tasty house salad. We saved room for dessert and it was definitely worth it. We had a wonderful experience here. If there were half stars, I would give 3.5 stars.

I came here with some friends because there was a special dinner that was thrown for a walk for cancer thing. I appreciate that the owner donated part of the proceeds from the dinner. I am very happy with the service and love the open kitchen so you can sort of see what the staff is doing while preparing your food. what I am unhappy to say is that the food is mediocre at best and over priced. I definitely don't mind paying for a good dinner and since I use to cook in a Resturant I expect to pay a premium if the service is good and the food is great. paying over $25 for lasagna and meatballs dosent leave a good taste in my mouth. meatballs seemed mealy and did not taste right. the lasagna seemed like it was cooked a couple days ago. I will be honest in saying there service was excellent. I always say try anything at least twice to make sure it wasent a fluke, good or bad so I will be back. the aptnosphere is loud. had a table for seven and couldnt talk to the other side of the table. hope it gets better. till then ciao

So my boyfriend brought me here last Friday. A place in his town that he's been wanting to try. Because of work and me driving from Kirkland, we didn't get there until about 9:00. The atmosphere was nice. We sat in the lounge at one of the higher tables next to the window. It was pleasant... I had some riesling, him a screwdriver. He didn't have complaints on his drink and neither did I. It does bother me when a place charges you almost $8 for a glass of wine but don't even fill it halfway. They were generous with this. I ordered the seafood fettucini and it was a very large meal. But for $20 for the plate, you would hope for a decent portion. It was very saucy which I prefer over very dry when we're talking pasta. I was definetly unable to put a dent in my plate but i did like it alot. I did have a caesar salad that came w/the meal beforehand which was absolutely delicious! Their service was great also. I cannot stand going to nice places and finding they've hired some rude, bitter person to represent their business. I give them 4 stars cause I would eat here before Olive Garden...

  • Chuck F.

This is what I would call a "family-style" Italian restaurant, meaning it is not too fancy or high-priced, with basic, good Italian food, and although a few dishes hover around $20, most are in the $15-18 range. The salad with the house dressing is awesome, and so are all of the pasta dishes. The portions are usually such that you would most likely take half of it home. I've never had bad service, either. Joe is usually there to greet you, or to see how your meal was, and he is a heck of a nice guy.

Great food, great service. I've been going here every Wednesday for the past 7 weeks with Business Connections of Peirce County and I am always impressed. Marylin (I hope I spelled it right) always takes very good care of us, even though we are a big group. Alicia's Crispy Chicken Sandwich is my favorite, and they have very good salad. I see the owner there almost every time I go in, too. Good food and a nice atmosphere. The only problem is that the parking lot can be a bit tight

Went there yesterday for lunch, and ordered Jeseppi's Trio - substituted red-clam sauce for the tomato basil, it was all very, very delicious. You have to ask for the bread when your meal is served, because they don't want people to waste it. Very, very, very disappointed in the canolli - the filling was "watery" (see Cassi's photo), it should be thick and creamy. The flavor was not that good either.

Yuck, yuck and triple yuck! Very bland, salty sauces with overly cooked pasta! I'm guessing that instead of "family style" pasta, they were going for "Nursing home style" pasta? The interior is more like a hospital cafeteria from the 80's except it felt very unsanitary. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy stepping out of my snooty pasta palaces for a nice cheap pasta dish occasionally, like what you get at the Spaghetti Factory, but this....this was just horrible. Thankfully we were given a gift certificate so we didn't have to pay for it ourselves. I don't think I ever would have forgiven myself for paying for food like that.

As the three stars indicate, it is A-ok. I didn't find anything paticularly thrilling about this place other than the lounge looks amazing to chill out in. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and it was ok. It had a sauce to it which was supposed to pass as spicy but felt muted instead. The cooking of the chicken was fine and the side salad I had was very good. The service seemed sluggish throughout the meal. It was always friendly but the wait time seemed longer than it should since it wasn't that busy to begin with. So the experience was just so so.

I've always heard good things about this place, so I swung by for sandwiches to-go since I was dropping off lunch nearby to my beau. The ambience is welcoming.. I sat waiting in an inviting U-shaped sofa and browsed their dinner menu. The sandwiches come with chips, soup (only two-a sausage one and a chicken cheese tortellini) or green salad, which was nice change to being stuck with a bag of chips (I didn't to ask what brand). Onto the food.. my grilled Bev's veggie on a focaccia (served on wheat unless otherwise requested) was one of the best I've had in a long time. Loaded with seasoned eggplant, bell peppers and melted gooey cheese, my taste buds were dancing! I wasn't impressed with the chicken cheese tortellini soup so I chose to dip my sandwich in it. I picked him up the Sheila sandwich (grilled)and he said it was sooo gooooood -fresh and hearty. I waited 20 minutes for my order after paying so if you're in a rush, I recommend you call ahead! Despite the long wait and some bad reviews, I was intrigued enough to want to come back for dinner before I ate my sandwich.. reasonably priced with tons of options. Which makes me think that perhaps the kinks of prior reviews have been wrinkled out.

My food was served to-go, even though we were eating in. When I ordered a salad, the lady at the counter asked what kind of dressing and I said no Gorgonzola. So she offered me the house dressing.... Little did I know, the house dressing had Gorgonzola in it. Then, rather than replace my salad, they charged me for a new one and never even apologized. The sandwich was good, the new salad was ok, but we will never be back. That's unfortunate, considering there weren't many guests in the building while we were there.

Amazing food!! My sister Kimmie and I shared the trio plate and I couldn't believe that it was a shared plate!! I wish I had taken a pic before I chowed down but damn!!! It was beyond bomb! The garlic cheesy bread was phenomenal as well!! We ended with cannoli and cheesecake and everything about our dinner was beyond fantastic! Will definitely come back! P.s. The owner also comes by and greets you!!

This place is really good for people who have a very mild palate. That sounds like an insult, but there are a lot of people who won't try something if it's too "out there"- like my family. For me, it was a little too bland overall, but I would probably give it another shot-if only for more tiramisu (best I have EVER had)! I got the trio, which included spaghetti with meat sauce, fettuccine Alfredo, and cheese tortellini with a tomato basil cream sauce. I got a side salad (or you get soup with your meal, if you prefer) with Gorgonzola, which was really rich and flavorful. I added prawns to the Alfredo, but it still didn't add a lot of taste to the dish overall-I had to ask for more Alfredo sauce. The cheese tortellini was the best part of the dish, but I wasn't a huge fan of the tomato basil cream sauce. I took two bites of the spaghetti and gave it to my boyfriend. The Spumoni ice cream is excellent (and cheap!), and the tiramisu is HEAVEN. It tasted more like a hybrid tiramisu/cheesecake concoction, rich and thick instead of creamy and custard-like. Next time I go I will probably get an entree salad or try the tortellini with the wild mushroom sauce. The best thing about this restaurant is that the owner shakes your hand and makes you feel welcome. How many places nowadays do that?

From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave this is a class act! The service was fantastic, the owner Joe comes out and greet each of his guests and discusses what some of his favorites are, the staff ... treat you as if you were at their home, and the food is amazing!! We tried an appetizer, a main course, soup and salad... bread sticks and a dessert!! This place beats other Italian chain restaurants for sure. Our personal recommendations would be Joseppi's trio, the chicken marsala, and definitely the sausage soup! I am pretty sure everything on the menu is wonderful! This gives us a reason to come back again and again! One more thing... Our waiter Andrew was accommodating and made sure everything was perfect and to our satisfaction!

My daughter and I had the pleasure of dining at the VIP table tonight. Joe stopped by to chat, as did other family members. Mike provided great service s and the food was incredible.

Always love it when I go here! I always stick with the chicken fettuccine and it is always amazing! Also going here for lunch at the deli is really good and reasonably priced. The sandwiches are fantastic! I do not think it is over priced for the amount and quality of food you get.

If you are looking for upscale spendy/trendy, snooty restaurant , this is not it. If you are looking for attentive service and quality food, this is it! This is a family style restaurant owned and operated by a family & community oriented legend in Tacoma. His name is Joe Stortini. If you grew up in the area and are over 25, it is nearly impossible not to know him. I have been there three times. He has stopped by the table each time to chat and see how dinner was. He is a great guy! The food here is excellent. The meatballs and sauces are out of this world. The breadsticks are great. I have not tried the sandwiches in the deli area but they look awesome. They have a banquet room for parties as well. I highly recommend this restaurant for regular dining.

We had joseppies cater our wedding, and they did an amazing job! They were well priced, got to the venue early to set up and came with copious amounts of food! There was even enough for our guest to have seconds with food still left over. Their wild mushroom fetucine was amazing, they added a second salad dressing at no cost! I could continue to rave, but will cut myself off.

To be honest I wanted to like this place. The server was great and staff were friendly. However the food was just meh. Wife ordered the clams and it came looking straight out of the can, heated and mixed with cheese. I had the sausages and they were a bit on the crusty side. I may be wrong but it just doesn't feel like there is a connect between the owner and his staff as far as the food preparation. If there was and from what I can tell about the owner, this food should be outstanding. But its not.

The Unlucky Bay Leaf. The Good: 1. Alfredo sauce is thick, but good. 2. The pasta, though far from fresh or homemade, was cooked well. The Bad: 1. Added Chicken: $4 more for a extremely dry, tasteless, seemingly 3-day-old ,slab of sliced chicken thrown on to the top your your pasta. Inedible. 2. Cheese sticks and chicken parmesan: burnt in the deep-fryer. 3. No gratuitous bread. 4. Ragged pieces of bay leaves in the gut-bomb of a tomato basil cream sauce. Normally, I wouldn't complain about whole bay leaves which may be picked out, but these were jagged pieces that were difficult to notice. I accidentally swallowed a piece, which I could feel scratching my throat on the way down. When I told the server about them, she conveyed to me that the chefs feel like it's lucky to find a bay leaf. Wow, I guess every customer will be lucky enough to ingest broken pieces of bay leaves! Perhaps the cooks should either take out the bay leaves before consumption, or wait to add the bay leaves until they blend the sauce.

We went to Joessepis for Mother's Day brunch and had a wonderful time. From the Chicken Catchittori to the Lasagna to the Chicken Linguini all was excellent. Joe Stortini was very friendly and warm, stopping by often. Made us feel like part of the family. Great place.

The restaurant, food, pricing and service were all pretty blah. The hostess seemed put out that we wanted to be seated, and it took her quite a while to even realize we were waiting (although they were not busy.) The food is significantly overpriced. I would expect a strip-mall restaurant to have reasonable pricing - but entrees run around $17-$20, even for a basic pasta/sauce/chicken dish. The waitress rushed us through our appetizer and meals - even taking away a plate while someone was still eating! Food itself wasn't great. The pasta was decent, everything else was either overcooked, mushy, or really greasy. We won't be back. There are too many other (delicious, reasonably-priced) options.

Showed up at 8:15 to eat here. Sign says they close at 9pm. We walk in and a girl greets us from behind the display case and says we're actually closing early today sorry. As we walk out their illuminated open sign is still on. Will not be coming back, ever. Bad business practice. There was also no sign posted as well of them closing early. 4/22/15

Ok, I usually have a three strikes rule for restaurants, and sadly, Joeseppis just got their last strike. Every time I have been there, I have gotten consistently poor service. Usually the food is good enough quality to compensate, but now the quality has gone downhill too... and just completely avoid getting dessert, cause the portion size does not match the price at all!

Don't be misled by the fact that this restaurant is in an inauspicious strip mall. The food is great and the service impeccable. We were greeted at the door by the very gracious owner, which is a wonderful way to start off a meal.

We picked this restaurant by accident for a meal out after working like field hands in the yard all day one Saturday. The result was frankly astounding. The service folks are happy, snappy, and responsive. Just like I like it. Your drink never goes dry. Our server was knowledgeable and cordial, not the least bit condescending. The menu is broad and really varied. The three of us who were dining had lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, and spaghetti with a house made tomato-basil cream sauce. The salad and soup we had as part of the meal were fresh, tasty and really well seasoned. The food was absolutely perfect. The sauces did what they're meant to do, which is support the entree of which they are a part. The pasta was truly al dente, chewy but not tough. The bread was perfectly moist and the crumb was done to a T. And the portions are meant to be eaten and provide leftovers for the next day. They are HUGE. We were so happy to find an Italian restaurant of this quality in our new home city. If you like authentic Italian food, done the way that it's supposed to be done without a bunch of "fusion" garbage and non-traditional methods, this is your place. The owner walks around, chatting up the tables, making sure everyone is being taken care of to the best of his businesses ability to do so. You can't beat tradition, not in this case anyhow. UPDATE: We went to the restaurant again for my Mom's birthday. I noticed that there was a completely different crew on hand. A bunch of high school boys cooking (?!?) and the old gentleman I had seen walking around and chatting was nowhere around. Our service was terrible, the food was worse. I ordered prawns in my pasta, I got chicken. I got a consolation dish of 4 prawns when I asked about this. My wife's chicken Marsala was wretched. The alcohol hadn't been flashed off the wine and the Marsala was all you could taste. My Mom (it's her freakin' birthday!) got the worst chicken parm that either of us had ever tasted. The high school kids were playing around behind the counter, walking around the restaurant with their hands in their pockets... can't let the original 5 stars stand, folks. You guys took a HUGE plunge in our book. Dirty (hands in pockets behind a food service counter? Really?), bad service (chicken fat flavors whatever it comes into contact with. I ordered prawns), and mediocre food. At ~$25/plate you expect better. And that's it, 2 stars. See ya!

We crave great spumoni and we're not disappointed. it was excellent. we will be back again and often!

Went to dinner and had a bottle of wine. The food was very well prepared. Had Lasagna that was great. The staff was polite and friendly. The owner stopped at our table to greet us and thank us for coming to his restaurant. It was an enjoyable experience an is highly recommended by us.

Stopped in for the first time recently and was overall pleased with our food and overall experience. We were there late afternoon (about 3:30) on a Sunday. It was not particularly crowded and we were seated immediately in a nice, comfy booth. (It did start to fill up quite a bit while we were there. I suspect a lot this was folks on their way to ZooLights just up the street.) For my starter, I had the Sicilian Sausage Soup, which was very flavorful, with just the right amount of spice, and sausage in every spoonful. My entrée was the Chicken Marsala, which was fine, if not particularly memorable. A generous pour of house red accompanied by meal. Prices, I think, are a hair above the odd. However, we had a Passport card which got us a 2-for-1 deal, so we had no problem with our final tally. Service was friendly and attentive. At one point, our server was waiting on a party of about 37, so was otherwise engaged for a bit. But, another server jumped right in to get me a box for my leftovers, bring our check, etc., so we were not just left hanging. I would not go out of my way to go to Joseppi's, but, if I happened to be in the neighborhood again and wanting a meal, I would definitely stop in again.

This restaurant has really gone down hill. The food is frequently over cooked and the bathrooms are rarely clean anymore. I mean how can the bathrooms be filthy dirty and out of toilet paper on a Tuesday evening right when dinner service started? Did they not clean them since last weekend?! And how do the mozzarella sticks get burnt on the outside but are still frozen in the middle?! The staff is still very friendly and the restaurant atmosphere is warm and welcoming which is why I keep giving them another chance but I'm really tired of wasting my money on bad food. Now if I go I just sick to the wine and salad (I know crazy but I still like to go) :-P

I purchased a Tacoma Dealsaver card that was for multiple restaurants for a large pizza with 3 toppings. When I called to place an order, I was told that it was supposed to be a buy one get one. I told her that this was not the case and that all other restaurants have honored the price for 1 pizza. Anyway, they gave me a small 10 inch pizza with 2 toppings. I thought the pizza was edible, but my daughter said it was one of the worst she has tasted and didn't want a second piece. 3/15/15 - Did end up going back for another pizza and this time it was really pretty good. The pizzas are still quite small for $16 though.

I have been a loyal customer for many years, way back when they were originally Mama Stortinis in University Place. I will usually do take out after a long day of work, but unfortunately I have become more and more disappointed. I keep hoping that they will take an upward swing, but sadly it has not. After I paid for my take-out tonight, I realized that they had forgotten the bread and butter. When I asked about it, the lady told me that they were all out of butter. What restaurant runs out of butter?? She also told me that she put one breadstick in the container with the chicken marsala. I told her that they have always packed the bread separately, and that it would probably get soggy and she seemed very put out, so I just left. And of course, by the time I got home it was completely soggy from the condensation and the sauce, so was inedible. The salad container wasn't even filled halfway, and there was absolutely no Parmesan shavings. For $22.90, that is way overpriced for only getting some lettuce and pasta. I always tip well, but wish I would have waited to tip $5 until after I saw the food that I got. What happened to the days when they used to have real bread and that wonderful garlic butter? The last time I ordered takeout for my daughter and I, they completely forgot one salad, and didn't put any mushrooms on the chicken marsala, which is one of the main ingredients. When I called about it, the manager didn't offer any type of compensation. She just said that I was welcome to drive back there to pick up the missing salad and some mushrooms... The last thing I want to do after a long day of work, is to drive 15 minutes there and 15 minutes back for their mistake. I was shocked. Yes, the owner is very kind and does wonderful things for the community, but that doesn't justify charging that much money for poor quality and poor service. I am bummed that I need to start looking for a new place for takeout.

I give this place two stars for the following: First when we walked in, we were greeted by an older man who was very sweet. He seated us in a booth (that wasn't too clean), but he was definitely a sweetheart. That's why this place got two stars. The waiter was not too informative. He seemed as if he did not want to be at work and really did not care. We were the only ones there aside from the table of 4 who was boxing up their food and getting ready to leave. I asked for my dressing on the side which he did NOT do, and I asked for diet and was given regular. Food was not hot, appetizers were burnt (I got garlic cheesy bread. Burnt and semi cold food is not appetizing) my husband's soup (cheesy tortellini) was very plain. We didn't finish any of those. On to the entrees. My husband just got regular penne noodles with alfredo sauce and added meatballs. Meatballs were so dry and plain. Could barely swallow and the WORST part of it all. The penne noodles were way too over done. They were flattened, some were broken up and in strips, and when you ate it, it tasted like mashed potatoes in alfredo sauce. We complained and asked for another, he brought it back within two minutes. Top noodles were cooked perfectly but as we got to the bottom it was the same ish as before. Told the waiter again and he looked and said.. "Yeah we flash boil our noodles. That's why it's like that." And I said, "You could tell their over cooked like the other ones right? Or is it just me?" And he goes, "Yeah I do, I think it has something to do with the flash boil when it goes in the water a second time." I just wanted to leave. So we left, I did tip him 20% because I always do no matter what the service, I just think it's standard. But I don't think I will ever go back. He gave us a lunch menu but charged us for dinner price. Didn't even comp the pasta dish we could not eat. Tired of complaining because he was so hard to find because he was always elsewhere. Thank you, but no thanks. Sorry, but NOT SORRY.

I'm not sure were these great reviews are coming from. When I get chicken tortellini soup at an Italian place that has perfectly processed square diced chicken in it that's the end for me. I mean the food was barely worth half what we paid. I'm in the industry and this was a less than mediocre Italian food. Olive Garden is cheaper and has better food, and that's coming from a guy who dislikes Olive Garden. If the prices here were better this would not have been a bad review but for the prices it was not up to par.

I went here today for the first time with a close friend for lunch and well, I'm impressed! Our hostess/server, Jeanne, was very sweet and helpful. I ordered the salmon picatta, which was marvelous, but I wish it had had less of a wine taste, more garlic, and fresh artichoke hearts; I don't really care for the brine used in jarred artichoke hearts. The linguine was perfectly al dente, the salmon was plentiful but not over-powering, and the capers and fresh tomatoes were a nice touch. I also ordered the Pinot Grigio; I was just going to order a single glass since I was going to be the only one drinking, but Jeanne told me that bottles were half off, so it would only be five dollars more to get a bottle, and I could take whatever I didn't drink with me. Well, why not? Of course, then I wound up drinking half the bottle, but questa è la vita! ;) My friend ordered the meatball sandwich, and she said it was marvelous! Our meals both came with a salad; I ordered it with their honey mustard dressing on the side, while my friend ordered ranch on hers. I thought the salad was good and a very nice size (I could only eat about half!), but I wish that it had come with tomatoes and/or cucumber. The lettuce and carrots were both very fresh and crunchy, though. The entrees themselves were very nice-sized; I could only eat about half of mine, and I went in very hungry. The restaurant itself is clean and has ample seating, but doesn't feel overly large. The decor was nothing fancy, but it had a nice ambiance anyway. Would definitely visit again! I think next time I'll build my own pasta so that I can try their other sauces/meats/pasta! Well worth four stars; I would have given them five if they used fresh artichokes, had more toppings in the salad, and didn't use so much wine in the sauce for the picatta.

We took our employees here for our Christmas party dinner... 8 total in our party. When we arrived at 6pm on Sunday night, we were greeted by Joe Stortini, owner, who knew our names as soon as we walked in. Nice touch to see the owner especially on a Sunday night. Service was excellent.... attentive, helpful but not hovering. Appetizers, Entrees, Desserts and Drinks were all spot on. By the way, come hungry. The portions are HUGE!! Everyone was having a great time that we didn't notice that it was well past 8 and they were closed when we were leaving. No one rushed us or made us feel like we needed to hurry up because they were closed. It was a great night all the way around and our employees truly enjoyed it. I would highly recommend!

Terrible food and service! We waited 10mins to be seated (plenty of tables available) and another 30min for our food. I ordered the spinach salad with chicken, it lacked flavor and the red onions were coarsely chopped in big pieces and consumed the salad. They should have called it an onion salad.

I'm really surprised this place is as highly rated as it is. It is typical, Americanized Italian food. The servers are unable to answer basic questions about ingredients, which isn't necessarily their personal fault but the management should provide better training. Everything I've had has been under-seasoned and they rely on soupy red sauce and cheese to flavor most dishes. The prices are way too high for the quality of preparation and the cost of the ingredients. Note for vegetarians/vegans: all of their pastas have egg, the tomato sauces even the most basic are cooked with chicken broth, and there is egg in their vinaigrette-style salad dressings. They catered an event I attended and there was literally nothing I could eat. If you're looking for noodles covered in cheese, this is your spot. If you want really carefully prepared and seasoned Italian food, look elsewhere.

I used to go to Mama Stortini's religiously growing up (10*+ years) and after moving away for college and moving around I have found myself in Tacoma for the last three years. I've been told it's the same family just different people so when is saw it pop up on groupon I immediately bought three groupons. All three times I sat at the bar. All three times they presented me with cold pasta, cold sauce, too much oil, and cold meat (ordered different things each time). I'm gluten free so maybe they pre-cook the pasta ahead of time? But the sauce/meat was not even warm. One of my meals ONLY came with chicken, pasta, and olives. Totally forgot the tomatoes, cheese, and sauce. When I asked for the tomatoes, cheese, and sauce-the server brought it to me in cups completely raw/cold and told me to add it to my already cold meal. HORRIBLE. Didn't even eat it. Worst three meals I've ever had. I should have gone just to drink wine since that they did not/could not screw up. Never going back again. Stay away! My boyfriend is half Italian and he even said the Olive Garden was better (not a compliment).

The pros: three restaurant has a cute deli inside, offers speedy takeout, and supports local organizations a lot. But, our pizza, the Maria Lisa which promised four cheeses, sun dried tomatoes and capers, sounded much better than it tasted. Although the toppings were generous, the pizza itself fell flat. The crust was nothing special-tasteless and chewy, the cheese was thick and waxy, and the sauce didn't pop. The pizza was not bad just... Not great either. And for 15 dollars we expected better than something we could buy frozen.

The best part of this restaurant is the ambiance. Sit in the lounge and enjoy the fireplace and the relaxing atmosphere. The food is average Italian for average prices and the service was good. It may not become your favorite restaurant, but you may find yourself coming here to relax, have a drink, and grab a bite to eat.

Unfortunately, this place lost 1 star. I called on my way home from work. I ordered the Joeseppi's special pizza. The chick over the phone told me it would take between 10 to 15 minutes. I specifically asked for no olives and mushrooms. You know pretty simple, just want the meat (insert gross humor here) on the pizza. I got to Joeseppi's, walked in, paid for my pizza, and drove home without taking a peak inside the pizza box. I got home, dressed in my comfy clothes and opened the pizza box. Low and behold, there were black OLIVES all over the pizza. Enraged after driving in the pouring rain, I called Joeseppi's and demanded to talk to the manager. His first suggestion was to drive back to the restaurant and get the new pizza free of charge, plus another pizza. Of course my reaction was hell no. I'm not going to deal w/ traffic and the monsoon outside my door. Finally he said that he would comp me the pizza and whenever I'm in the neighborhood, he would have a coupon for me to pick up. I'm not going to hold it against them, but it sucks that I specifically asked not to have certain toppings on the pizza. If something like this happens again, I won't be so lenient

At first glance, I was already irritated. If they spell the name of this place as they do, they're telling me that they can't spell or they're catering to an Americanized audience. Well, I think it's a little of both. In this city/region, you are less likely to see a holdout from its once small Italian-American community, and more likely to see someone wearing clogs or REI apparel. I'm still going to give Joeseppi's (should be Giuseppe's) 4 stars. I had a huge pasta dish with chicken, a tasty sauce, and other ingredients that was a little Americanized, but undeniably good and filling. The service was quick and very friendly, and the prices were fair. It's not off I-5 as one is transiting through Tacoma, but closer to the Sound and the Tacoma-Narrows Bridge. That means it takes a concerted effort to travel up the other freeway spur (WA 16) toward the bridge and get off at Pearl St. If I was in that area of Tacoma, or someone from Tac-town suggested going there, I'd go again. No problem.

I like Joeseppi's, particularly given the fact that the owner or manager, whoever happens to be on duty when I walk in, always comes over to greet my wife and I with a handshake. It's unusual, that handshake, and reminds me of old world manners. It's something I respect. Food: The first meal I had here was fantastic. Great soup, great bread, good chicken parm. Second meal was burnt, and I'm guessing that's because the server was slow to realize it had been sitting under the heat lamps, waiting to be served. I am willing to try once more to see if I like the food here. Good Italian is hard to find in the PacNW. Frankly, I have yet to find any place that compares with the east coast. Joeseppi's reminds me of a few places, and seems to be close to hitting the mark. If I based my review on the first time I ate there, I'd give this place four stars. If I based it solely on the second visit, I'd give it two stars. It all depends on what direction the restaurant is heading. Atmosphere: Loud when busy. Good bar area to eat and watch sports. Not a date night location. Service: It's the sort of local place that hires a lot of kids as waiters. That's great, and I get what's being done with that. Sometimes, the kids aren't so great at service, but it's a learning experience.

I came here for lunch on a weekday. Heard that there was a relation to Mama Stortinis and loved Mama's. Anyways. we were practically the only ones there, they just started their lunch service. We were served by Carol. She was good, but I could tell she was busy still setting up. That being said, we and later another table were the only two there. Still the service was minimal and not so attentive. She was friendly and nice otherwise. Food. Start with the garlic bread. They were doughy and undercooked. Not good at all. We had the Joeseppi Duo. Friend the Linguine with Meat Sauce and Cheese Tortellini with Tomato Basil Cream. I had the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and and Meat Ravioli with Alfredo. Pasta was made properly but with the sauce, it was not good. The flavor was that of them being cooked separately and only came together on the plate - not briefly married together on pan. The end results in a dish that tastes detached from eachother. Very watery/runny sauce. Weak flavors. Sauce definitely needed to simmer longer. Sadly, Carol didn't catch these things before she served them to us. Essentially, I feel like we just came in to early and their service wasn't quite ready and nor was their food. We did inform her about the bread issue. Side notes - being practically an open kitchen, the cooks and some of the other servers were not completely professional to say the least. Conversations that they were having were definitely not appropriate within earshot of customers.

Called in my order and the food was ready when I got there during the dinner rush. Was greeted and had a short conversation with the owner which was a great touch! Had the pasta duo with the white mushroom sauce which was amazing! Huge portions and comes with breadsticks and salad. I will be back very soon!

Just the facts should be enough for you to draw your own conclusions: $120 for take out dinner for a family of 6. (Specifically: 2 orders tortellini, spaghetti & meatballs, eggplant parmesan and pasta primavera, all with green salad and bread) Other reviews are correct in stating food can be inconsistent. This time around, Joeseppi's seriously failed to deliver: dry meatballs, super salty red sauce, watery pasta primavera. It hurts the pocketbook and the stomach. This is one social experiment I can't afford to make regularly in the hope they even out quality wise. I'm generally a fan of this restaurant, but even when the meals are good I walk away feeling I've spent quite a bit for what I get. It's family friendly in theory, but not function - at least budgetwise. It pains me to write a shoddy review of an establishment with a long local history and one that is friendly to community, often sponsoring school nights and the like, but as I stated initially "just the facts" cannot allow me to recommend them to you if you are seeking a solid family dinner. I long for the Joeseppi's of University Place, with family style meals, festive atmosphere and reasonable ticket. Buyer beware.

First time at Joeseppi's. Called to make reservation for 5. Woman laughed and said you don't need a reservation. Went ahead with reservation & gave her my name. Got there waited at the hostess desk longer than needed. No reservation. Told only a booth available. Could we squeeze in? Calamari was disgusting. Doughy, under cooked. They took it off the bill. They recommended the Chicken Parmesan, "it will melt in your mouth." Salad was lettuce with a bit of purple cabbage, maybe, and dressing. That's all. Did get good bread sticks. Chicken Parmesan was dry. Didn't melt in your mouth. Pasta side didn't have enough sauce. I've had frozen Chicken Parmesan that was better. Price $17.99. This was bad food at outrageous prices.

Had dinner (well, almost) there this evening. My steak salad (that I asked for RARE) came to the table, with the steak cooked incorrectly. I asked for this to be noted, the waitress actually had the chef prepare another because it was almost burned. I ate some of the salad...I was hungry. There was a HUGE romaine end in the salad as well as a large piece of plastic bottle. I couldn't even finish my salad because after my teeth slipped off the nozzle in me salad, I bit my cheek. Not sure what is going on with them this evening...however, kitchen needs to take a step back and fix whatever and/or whoever is messing up. I will NEVER eat there again.

Great, homestyle italian food. Best part about Joeseppi's are the portions...I know I will have lunch and dinner the next day because they are so large! As for food choices, I recommend the "make your own dish" with fettuchine and mushroom sauce. There are large mushrooms in the sauce - not just the flavor. And if you get the salad make sure to try the house blend dressing -- it is to die for! For faster service, sit in the bar. The staff is very friendly and they always play the home team. :)

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
