Excellent all around. I think I've eaten here 6-7 times when visiting town, and always happy with the food and beer. My kids like the nachos, chili, and baked potatoes. Staff is friendly, easy parking, good desserts.

Went a couple months ago. Awesome place. Had an incredible meat pie and my wife had bangers and mash. Friendly bartender and good Scottish beer selection.

We have been going to this place for years, everytime we head to VT. The food is fantastic in my opinion and my personal favorite is the chicken and mushroom puff pastry pie. Pros: Great quality food, inexpensive, unique atmosphere and menu. A great scottish sampling on the menu. Our server even wore his kilt. Though this is a pub, it is very family friendly. My kids love the angus burger and grill cheese. They also decorate for the holidays and for halloween have a very fun atmosphere. Cons: I wish I lived closer. Thats it, I love this place!

Love this place. Who would have thought yours find a Scottish pub in Vermont. Great Pub atmosphere and authentic Scottish dishes. Some outdoor seating for a nice evening. Sports are generally on the TV. It's a small place, maybe 10 tables and a bar for about 8 folks. Friendly atmosphere, so come by and check it out.

GREAT FOOD! We've been here several times - drive an hour to get here and well worth it!

I have been craving haggis, tatties, and neeps ever since my inaugural dinner a few weeks ago! The Belhaven on tap was delightful. Friendly service. The setting was wonderfully warm and welcoming - very VT rustic, but decorated memorably with Scottish swords, quotes, maps, etc. Impressive holiday spirit. Tried the chicken and bacon nachos to start - heaping with cheese, and not just on the top! Split an order of stew and haggis and taddies. LOVED IT! Took some home only to make the experience last longer reheated for brunch. My fam has a cabin nearby and we try to keep up on local openings - been meaning to try MacLaomainn's for a while and so glad we did! Will definitely return. But by all means try the Scottish food!

Great spot in Chester. The five of us went in having gone a time or two before yet we still walked away satisfied. Good food, service and Scottish beer. We will definitely be returning.

A must stop if your passing through Chester. Very warm & inviting, with a terrific tap selection. The Scottish Pub fare is very good, and service is outstanding & friendly. You won't be disappointed.

when I'm in town I pretty much live here every night. You should too! Great selection of beers, on draft and bottled, a healthy liquor selection too. Great food, yummy traditional options and some lighter choices available too, with a tasty dessert selection, There is cozy indoor seating and friendly outdoor seating too. and (Gasp) two clean bathrooms! There is a dart board that I've not yet seen in use. If you're a soccer fan, you will be happy to find the game on here! and if it's not the right season, there will surely be some sporting event on screen. Oh ok, I suppose if you don't like bagpipe music, then maybe this place would be a little annoying sometimes. But really, who doesn't like bagpipes?! Not I!

So, maybe we ordered wrong. We got a Caesar salad and a pizza. Pretty deficient. Service was friendly, but not super attentive. I probably wouldn't go back.

Great surprise in the Vermont Mountains Think about that local pub you would love to find after a day of skiing or hiking or just hanging out in Vermont. You know the one. Where the employees are incredibly friendly and the food is hearty and delicious. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable and you are guaranteed to have a wonderful time.

Excellent food and beer selection. Perfect stop for the way home from skiing. Hometown feel. Exceeds expectations! Having forgotten our packed dinner for the drive home from Okemo to CT, we happened upon this Scottish pub in Chester and decided to give it a try! We were so lucky to stumble upon this place! We settled at the bar and chose from a selection of Scottish brews that the barman walked us through. I chose the Twisted Thistle and my boyfriend opted for the a flight of Scottish beers as he could not decide! It was fun to explore (and get mad badges in UnTapped!) On top of the friendly atmosphere (everyone at the bar was SO nice!), the burgers we ordered were straight up delicious! Everything came out piping hot and was seasoned beautifully. I cannot wait to stop by again! I love this place!!

There was a bad accident on I-91 and closed down the southbound lane, so my wife and I had to get off the interstate. Sorry for the wreck, but glad we happened upon MacLaomainn's Scottish Pub for lunch as a result. Having visited Scotland last year and could not even find a Scotch egg during our visit there, we were pleasantly surprised to find them on the menu at MacLaomainn's. Very good for a starter! For a main dish I had the meat pie and Mary had the chicken mushroom pie. Both entree's were very good. I also had the Scottish Stout and Mary had the Old Engine Oil beer. Both were from Scotland and very good! Dined on the outside deck which was very pleasant for summer. The inside was very British Isle's feeling and I was sorry we could not stay for another drink. Still had a few hours drive ahead of us. The woman who waited on us was very nice and wore a kilt. Nice touch. There were many other offerings on the menu that I wish I could have tried if we were staying in the area. Next time for sure. Not too many Scottish places to eat anywhere and it's worth the stop! I even had my Edinburgh shirt on by chance. Must have been karma!

Been coming to this place since it opened. Best beers this side of the pond, plus haggis. One of the best of many good things about Chester.

  • Vin C.

"Don't be scared, get the haggis" An authentic Scottish pub is harder to find than one might think, and in rural Vermont no less. But Maclomainns is the real deal. Been there a few times. The beer selection, in both taps and drafts, is all Scottish beers that you've likely never had before, and there's something for everyone. My latest visit, in which I entered extremely hungry, is the reason for this glowing review. Actually it was due to just two things I ordered - the loaded baked potato soup dujour, and raspberry cheesecake desert. The soup: piping hot, so cheesy, generously peppered with pieces of ham and bacon...a revelation. The dessert: a slice so homemade, it was cut in a shape that was definitely not an isosceles triangle. If this random app and dessert was so good, I can only imagine that the rest of the menu is. Really glad I ate here, will definitely be back.

Stopped here during a road trip because who wouldn't want to go to a traditional Scottish Pub? The food was great and everyone in my group agreed. We all tried something we'd never had before and everyone love it. The portions were generous, which was perfect for hungry snowboarders. We did have a mixed up where they brought another table's food to us because we ordered nearly the same items, but quickly hurried back and asked if anyone had touched the food yet. We hadn't so they took wrong food away and within minutes returned with the correct order. All our food was hot and fresh, so no complaints on that part. My group also enjoyed a few of the different Scottish beers and they all receive a big thumbs up. We would absolutely return here again.

Stopped here on a road trip through Vermont. Going to harpoon brewery but taking too long so we were hungry! Not disappointed! Husband had steak pie. Mashed potatoes were so creamy! Steak nice and tender. I had a great turkey with cucumbers on delicious homemade bread! My friend had a wonderful chicken sandwich on the same bread. Good burger and great service from Alissa!

First off I have to say my previous review albeit short was removed from Yelp which was the first time I've had this happen. My write up was short (due to being on a mobile device) but I'm not sure it warranted being removed so I'm trying again. Here is my original review: "Wasn't a fan of the food, the atmosphere, or staff. Wouldn't go again but if I do I'll update my review. " I'll expand on that now. I visited MacLaomainn's on March 19th, 2012 and checked in via fourSquare ( foursquare.com/knauff/ch… and if that link is removed my checkin id was: 4f67a1f7e4b018a6f11f4d08). I took my wife and 2 children. I don't recall what I had but I did not enjoy it however that might be my particular persuasion to Scottish cuisine, I am Irish after all. Most importantly I was not impressed by the service or atmosphere. I felt like the staff and patrons were offended that I went there with my family and there is a good chance we went at our typical dinner time (5:00-5:30) when there would not have been a rush nor anyone expecting to have a quite dinner with their special so and so. My kids are typically excellent in public or I wouldn't go in public with them. There is a chance I'll visit McLaomainn's again with the intention of writing up a more complete review stating the exact food and beers that I order but until then I believe my visit and review are valid and should remain available to future customers.

We got nachos which were decent (hard to mess up nachos). then i got chicken pot pie. it had one piece of chicken in it. And the 'pie crust'? no pie at all. The dish was essentially a creamy mix of veggies, one piece of chicken, and on top of it was a piece of puff pastry. No pie shell. For dessert I got 'homemade' apple pie and ice cream. The ice cream was clearly not of good quality...it was not rich and creamy but full of air like 'fake' ice cream full of a list of ingredients is...it was probably Hood or Turkey Hill Farm or whatever or something like that. And the pie? Instead of a nice browned flaky crust, the 'crust' was very pale colored and soft. The apples had no nice golden sauce made of cinnamon and spices..the apples were very bland. Probably the worst apple pie and ice cream I've ever had.

Stopped in on the way through town for a quick lunch and I am sure glad that we did! All of our meals were delicious! It is a very nice little restaurant with great choices and great service! I would recommend the beef pie! I look forward to coming again sometime.

Haggis, neeps, and tatties! Who could resist? A fun little Scottish pub with a great menu, good choice of Brews, and friendly service. The pot pies are tasty and the bread pudding really a delicious surprise. 'Lots of comfort food in this cozy atmospheric pub...perfect lunch spot after window shopping in quaint old Chester. I look forward to sitting outside on the deck in warmer weather.

Yes. Yes. Yes We were passing through town and looking for a place to eat. From the moment we pulled in the parking lot we knew we had chosen well. The deck was bustling with people and the energy great. Inside we found an authentic pub decor complete with a Scottish bar tender in a kilt. Our party of four opted for the "Work of Art" burger, the chicken and mushroom pie, the steak pie, and the Jack-o-bite. Everyone was happy. I had pint of Bellhaven and my tummy was happy. Will stop again if we're in the area.

We came here on a cold (cold by Californians' standards) Saturday evening. The wait time was about 30 minutes. We were finally seated and ordered a few rounds of beer. We ordered a few popular items from the menu, including haggis. The food arrived promptly. The food was good, perfect comfort food a chilly evening. Our favorite was the bangers and mash...the sausages were absolutely delicious. We still had room for dessert and was looking forward to the peanut butter pie, unfortunately this popular item was all out by then.

As a family, we go to Okemo 2-3 times each year. On the way home to I91 on 103. After our first trip there, we have never gone to VT without visiting MacLaomainn's at least once per trip. Last year we went there on the way home when we weren't even hungry. We went there this afternoon with ravenous appetites and ordered way too much food. As always, everything was amazing! The only negative was that we had to wait a few minutes for a table; however, it's president's weekend and everything up there is busy.

Absolutely fabulous place. I have never had haggis before, having heard all kinds of jokes about how bad it is. Boy am I glad that I decided to try it out. It was delicious. I also had a bottle of the best hard cider that I have ever tasted. My family and I plan to always dine here whenever we are in the area. My only request is that the kitchen stay open later than 9:00 PM on weekdays.

This is our favorite place to dine and drink in Chester! The food is yummy and satisfying. The beer selection, especially Scottish beer like Bellhaven on tap never hurts either!

MacLaomainn's is a wonderful place to go. My favorite dish is the Mince, which comes with Tatties (mashed potatoes) and Skirlie. They introduced me to both Mince and skirlie and I'm a huge fan of both. For those who've never heard of it, skirlie is onions and oats sautéed together in butter, so the oats get nice and toasty and buttery. For beer, they have one I'm in love with available in the bottle. It's from the Historic Ales of Scotland collection, Fraoch. A wonderful heather ale that goes so well with everything I've had on the menu. The owners are charming people who show how much they truly enjoy running a restaurant.

We had lunch on Saturday at the bar. Really fun. Proprietor was charming and helpful. Loved him and his kilt. The wine was tasty. We ordered fish pie & chicken/mushroom pie. Both delicious. Apple pie for dessert was the perfect finish. This pub was the antidote for an insanely cold, windy day!

Been there a few times for lunch and dinner, never disappointed. We like the pub atmosphere. The few times we were there the owner was behind the bar and v-e-r-y friendly. We have no aversion to organ meats so we had haggis, bangers & mash, stew and steak pie. Nice beer selection I may add. If your into trying something different, give MacLaomainn's a try.

Not a bad pub in the middle of Chester, not the most Epicurean of towns in VT. I was torn between the haggis and the steak pie and went with the latter. When it came out it was steak pieces in good brown sauce with a chunk of puff pastry on top and some tired looking peas and carrots on the side. Appearances were deceiving. Throwing the veggies into the sauce made a pretty good dish, however I would have prefer ed a steak and kidney pie but you take what you can get. Thinking back I should have had the haggis, that doesn't show up on many menus... Washed down with a couple of good ales diner wasn't bad. Decor is pub... service was fine... worth a visit.

Ok as good as it gets for a scottish pub, ok, really a neat place though....spent some fun time chatting with the owners and had a very enjoyable meal,,,wife got daring and had the haggus which we both agreed was really good, burger was also great, cute small place with outside seating....had noticed it a couple of years ago and finally got back thru chester with the opportiunity to grab some lunch....very glad we did!!!

Awesome food and beer. Traditional scottish dishes that taste delicious, i reccomend the fish pie. The atmosphere is also great, it really does feel like a little piece of scotland in vermont. Great place!!

Wow, this is the place to be when in Chester, VT on a weekend night! The whole town is very quiet so we were shocked to see a full house at 6:30pm on a Saturday night. The food was great, and they were playing rugby on the tv's. Our waitress seemed like a strange fit for the establishment, though. When we asked for her recommendations for food and drink, she replied that she was a vegetarian and that she didn't drink. Hahaha, still a nice lady. The haggis was surprisingly good (I think it's some sort of intestine - but it doesn't look like it). My favorite was the fish pie - all sorts of delicious seafood covered in mashed potatoes and baked together. Yum! The steak pie also looked good. Warm atmosphere, most entrees are between $6-$14.

  • Bonnie M.

Really reasonable prices and open for lunch in the off season. I had the traditional fish pie and my husband the stew. Both real good but the stew could use a little more broth. The Scottish beers were great. Will definitely go back.

This hidden (literally tucked away and hard to see) gem makes one of the best burgers I have ever had...And I've had a lot of burgers. I was taken back by how good it was that I had to go back and try it again a week later. The only negative is that they give chips instead of fries but that's not a big deal considering the burger is so big and filling. They also make a buffalo chicken soup here which was one of the best soups I have ever had. MacLaomainn's will stay at 5 stars until I order something that's not delicious. Until then, it's on the top of the list of VT food joints.

Not a bad place to check out if you are in Chester. We stopped by on our way in and had a bite to eat. I have to say, the waitress was seeming to be a bit on the sad/angry side, and seemed to only cheer up once folks were paying their bills and out the door. The food was decent. I had the tomato soup, which was yummy. The grilled cheese with bacon was decent and they had a great selection of both Scottish and local brews, which looked good, but since I was under the weather I didn't partake. We ended our meal with the home made apple pie with vanilla ice cream, which was decent as well. Considering that your choices in Chester are pretty small, it's not a bad place to check out. Just do not expect an overly friendly waitress.

We have a second home in Chester and whenever we are there we go here a couple times. The food is awesome! They have a great selection of draft beers, the wait staff is friendly and the service is great. It's a charming old building and the atmosphere is relaxing. They recently celebrated their 5th year anniversary which for Chester is a feat on it's own! I hope they stay along time.

Cozy atmosphere inside. Nice deck outside. Wifi. Had smoked salmon sandwich for lunch. Very good salmon and on nicely textured homemade bread.

Place is a cute pub for the area. Small and quiet, but they had a tv for games. Staff was really nice. It felt a bit cold (were there on a chilly winter day). We came here for lunch, I had the chili, which was good but came out insanely hot and seemed to be nuked in the microwave. The beef was not ground but chunks of beef like in a stew. Pretty spicy. The bread it came with was really good. My husband had a burger and thought it was good. Solid but not very memorable and kinda messy to eat.

We discovered Maclaomain's via Yelp as we were driving through Chester and wanted a bite to eat. This place is great! The ambience is cozy with wood paneled walls. The people are wonderfully friendly and the food is delicious! We had the Auld Reekie Stew with homemade bread and the steak pie with carrots, peas and mashed potatoes. We ate every last bite with pleasure. The portions are just right, and the prices are reasonable. We'll definitely go back (and hopefully, soon)!

Great selection of Scottish drinks and food. A perfect place to stop on your way to or from Okemo, located in downtown Chester. Play some cribbage at the bar if you have a chance.

I found this location thanks to Yelp. I stayed nearby in Bellows Falls and there didn't seem to be too many options there for food, so we headed into Chester to do some shopping and get some lunch. Great place! We loved the ambience. It definitely has a pub feel with wooden tables and floors, with some odd things on the wall like a taxidermied bear holding a beer bottle, some quaint wall hangings, and a dart board. I was there mid-day on a Tuesday and most of the crowd was older people, as in retired age, which I didn't mind because even though there were several full tables it was still quiet and a relaxed atmosphere. Service was average. The waitress was prompt, not overly friendly or informative, but I wasn't there to make friends I was there for the food, which far surpassed my expectations. I had a beer: Scottish stout, which was wonderful if you like dark beers. It seemed a bit lighter in texture than a Guiness but still had a full, rich flavor to it. My boyfriend ordered a chicken tortilla soup as an appetizer and it was out of this world. I made him share it with me of course. The ingredients all seemed super fresh. I believe it was homemade. I'd be shocked if it wasn't because everything in it was delicious and fresh. My boyfriend had the steak pie. It is almost like a stew with all of the ingredients seperated. The meat was in its own dish with an incredible gravy and piece of puff pastry on top of it. On the side there were mashed potatoes and carrots mixed with peas. It tasted like a high-end, gourmet Dinty Moore stew and I mean that in the highest respect because it was absolutely delicious. The name of the dish I ordered escapes me (it had the word 'reekie' in the title). It was a stew of spicy sausage, cabbage, and carrots topped with melted cheese and served with a slice of hearty bread. The bread slice itself was a bit small, that was one thing that could have been improved: more bread or a bigger hunk for dipping! My dish was also phenomenal. The sausage had just enough spice for my palette. I loved the cabbage as well, so make sure you do also if you order this item because it was definitely a dominant flavor. Prices were decent. The entrees were around the same price as sandwiches (many around $9-$12) which encouraged me to try something Scottish, rather than playing it safe at the same price for a burger. The portion sizes were not huge, but the meal was filling. It was nice to be able to finish the dish without feeling like I was bursting at the seams and it would have been difficult to take leftovers since we were just passing through. Would have definitely stayed for another beer it we didn't have more driving to do. I think this is the place to stop if you find yourself in the Chester area.

Exceptional!! (and trust me I'm a pretty worldly girl) Greeted immediately by a super friendly waitress, we quickly felt comfortable in this cozy little pub. Upon learning it was our first time we were offered some samples of some Scottish and some local brews so that we could make the perfect choice. Pints are priced extremely reasonable, particularly if you're traveling and used to higher city prices. Food impressed just as much as the service and comfort of the place... Nachos as an app were heaping, more than enough to feed 3 of us well. Two of us ordered a the steak pie on recommendation from a nice man sitting at the bar and it was DELISH! Exactly right for a brisk Vermont evening. A huge portion for a great price. This is a must stop if you're passing through these parts on a jaunt to the snowy mountains or even if you just life a town or two away.. Will not disappoint!

I went here for Lunch. I ordered their Angus Burger with chips and guess what it was good. I totally recommend their Burger "Work of Art" because every topping that you could thing is with the Burger, and this is only seasonal item. Its nice to sit and eat at their porch. the ambience inside is like a Hunters/skiers hang out place. they are open 7 days a week and serve Lunch/Dinner always, but this mostly a bar/pub/tavern.

Love it! Menu is not very extensive but there are a variety of options, all of which are tried and true. Ok, I haven't tried the Haggis, but I've heard it's good. They have the most delicious soups, in particular the Cock-a-Leekie (sp?) which is a creamy chicken soup. The tomato cheddar soup is really yummy too. I order the chicken pie almost every time. The atmosphere is small, dark, and pub-like, with lots of beers on tap. Servers are friendly. Slow service during busy times; has been a little better recently. I like the outdoor seating added last year. It is an intimate setting and can be hard to find a large table if you have a big group (bigger than 4). Not the greatest place for kids because it is small, tables are crowded in, there are tempting candles on each table, and no highchairs available, but there is a kid's menu if you ask. Desserts are yummy. Love the Scottish accents, too!

You will not be disappointed by this place. You feel like a local by the time you leave. I was in the area for the weekend, but literally was at this pub three times in 24 hours. The service and owner are delightful. Not only were Alan's beer recommendations spot on for me ( a picky beer drinker ), but I listened to him make recommendations all night. Didn't hear any complaints. I had haggis, neeps, and tatties (not exactly my style but I was curious., and trusting of the owner)- I was pleasantly surprised. Good times. Looking forward to going back. And I will.

We always stop in, whenever we're in town. The food always tastes exactly the same, and the beer selection is always good. Its a great place to hang out with a few friends, and I love bringing my parents, but if you're looking for a place with dirt cheap beer that you can go and get wasted, this is not your place.

  • Joel G.

Great food, great atmosphere, if i lived here I'd be a regular, We were driving through and I used Yelp to find a place to eat and I wasn't dissappointed. The service was very friendly, I had two kids (8 and 10) with me and they loved the place. Remember this is a pub not a fine dining establishment. If you are looking for fine dining this is not your place. If you are looking for a good honest meal that will fill you up and a great selection of Beer on tap and bottle and Scotch.

Just got back from this great place. I went ahead and tried the haggis and tatties, ha! YUM! Total comfort food and it wasn't too too heavy... well maybe cause the portion size was just right. Our waitress Kim, was awesome, she made us feel comfortable and welcomed. I thought the owner, who was behind the bar would be more social, but maybe it was an off day. He delivered us our food and didn't say a word. Didn't talk when I was waiting for my b.f. in the restroom either... Oh well... My b.f. ordered the Scottish salmon sandwich and it was amazing! It was smoked salmon people... never had that on a sandwich before but trust me, it was divine! the group of Canadian women next to us raved on and on about the house made soups. We will be back next time we are visiting VT. And the prices were good to boot!

Stopped in for lunch yesterday and it was great as always. Had the fish pie which is always sensational while my daughter had the steak pie which was just as good. Traditional homemade food, great beer and the friendliest service anywhere. We stop every time on our way up north from CT and plan to continue.

Maybe some were looking at a different menu but what we saw was extensive. Had lunch with friends today and what a wonderful time we had. We are locals and the word of mouth has always been positive. The appetizers of stuffed seafood mushroom caps, stuffed jalapeños, scotch egg were all outstanding. Meat pie, burger, sausage and the beef thing I had with oatmeal was delicious. They had peanut butter pie on the menu for dessert which we wanted but were too stuffed to eat! The beer selection...belle haven, Guinness, wee haven, twisted something IPA were wonderful. Will go back often. A perfect Sunday afternoon dining outside with friends with a wonderful meal.

Great ambiance! Place was hopping & we were seated in the 'hall' which has no ambiance..our wishes to be seated in the main bar were granted once a 4 top became available. I'm not the meat & potato or gravy type so for me, the menu was limited. I chose the sausage & cheese stew...served Luke warm. Was reheated in the kitchen at my request. Waitress knocked over my beer, about 3/4 empty & never offered to replace or refill. Burped all night & will never return.

Went back for Dad's birthday and had the chicken pie, which was *really* good - chicken, carrots, peas and mushrooms in gravy with puff pastry triangles sitting on top! - although Dad got the steak pie, and Mum had the baked haddock (new to the menu) - both of which made me wish I could fit more food into my too-small self! Dangit. And Kim is definitely sweet as they come, Lisa as well - very nice servers as a rule - the cute redheaded boy was super - and cute!, and the older bartender dude is great fun - they're all happy nice folks, and chatty if they aren't too rushed...but Alan, the owner, is a true Scotsman (as far as my American ideal/stereotype goes) - a bit gruff and no nonsense, although he can be quite friendly if he has time! And he's great to ask for drink recommendations :) Finally - get there early if you can (they don't do reservations, as far as I know), especially on Friday and Saturday - now that the weather is colder, the deck is closed and it's a bit of a squeeze on the busy nights. We have once decided to hit up the Pizza Stone down the street, when the hunger pangs just wouldn't wait. Looking forward to Mum's birthday next month and a shot at the steak pie...or the haddock...oooh choices!!!
